Ayala Mall has now decided to enforce Cebu City's smoking ban to the point where smoking is now banned from the ENTIRE mall grounds; that of course includes the terraces and the coffee shops / restos within.

Guess if you want to smoke your fag you'll have to now go smoke with the fags in the only designated smoking area at the corner of Mindanao Ave and Bohol Ave. For the uninformed (or those interested, LOL) it's one of the areas where the lady boys hang out. Especially at night. Anyone who's stayed at the Mandarin, PL or Quest has probably walk past or thru it and been harassed by one of them. Now, if you're a smoker, you can go hang out with them, you can smoke your cigarette while they smoke you, hahaha. Ayala management must really hate smokers to send it's patrons to that section. Actually the best way to go would be with a universal, use it anywhere, 4 G / LTE pocket WiFi device. For reasons that are not relevant here, I can not get cable broadband in the condo I'm renting. The first month I was here I picked up a Globe Tattoo 3 G unit. I would have gotten more satisfaction throwing p2,400 out of my window (p1,400 for the device and p1 K for the 30 days of unli load). For the most part the service was worse then the old dial up net connections and often during peak hours I couldn't even connect to the net at all. In all fairness to Globe, a friend who lives close to IT park uses the same device and has better service there; still not great, but better then what I was getting in the Capital / Banawa area.I think internet is an issue all over Asia. The only place I've seen good service is in Tokyo. Vietnam was shite. The blamed it on some cut cable but it was shite last year also. Don't remember what they blamed it on. Korea and Singapore have, in my experience reasonably fast, reliable service. In the Philippines, 6-10 Mbps is considered blinding speed. The problem of course is that the government is wholly uninterested, and for the private providers, there's little investment because of the limited subscriber base.

Concur with Col Law, you should have done (or should do) some online "dating" at DIA or other online site. Bars: I've seen some really slim gals at Papillon which is across the street from Planet X. It's a bit more edgy that many of the other places, but you occasionally find a spinner -- she would probably be dancing next to a rather hefty tattooed mother of three, but that's part of the charm.

Given the fact that a 'customer' went to the police as did the girl then my view is that they are really in a pickle. I was stopped by one and I said I would pay PHP 300 to my destination which I know is around PHP 250 on a meter. He laughed and said find another.

Now, linked to this is the speed at which you can get to Cebu after clearing immigration etc. According to the recent news a test run for APEC from Mactan to Marco Polo took 31 minutes. Must have been Sunday at 3 am as when I did it at 2 pm to the city center, it was 90 minutes (I kid yo not! Even the taxi driver was moaning!!

I cleared immigration and customs in 25 ins from landing. Remarkable and the system is much more efficient IMHO than before but the appalling lack of decent infrastructure and the accompanying roadwork's make is a miserable drive to the city.

However on a visit in April it took 1 HR and 5 minutes to get from the city to the airport in peak hour (prior to 9 am). I still made my flight. Not learning my lesson on a June trip it took 1 HR 15 minutes also in peak hour but this time I missed the flight. Ended up costing me 2000 pesos to Rebook the next flight. Given the distance is roughly 15 km, that is an average of 11 km per hour.

At one point in my recent trip to the airport, we got stuck for 10-15 minutes without moving on a suburban side street leading onto the road across the bridge. My entertainment (sad from a perspective of the plight of the average Filipino family) was peering into a house 10 meters from my window with a mentally retarded young girl and the dramas of their life.

However do not be fooled as Mandaue is a mess and won't get better soon. With APEC it will be worse so 90 minutes is the minimum you should allow.

The lack of investment in decent infrastructure is the main problem. This won't change fast as the local politicians seem unable to get past childish squabbling on the council (2 different political parties, Mayor is LP and the finance group headed by the ex Mayor's wife who is BOPK) - So don't expect improvement. There was a good editorial on this recently saying "grow up before it is too late" or something like that.

You are warned.I think they did the dry run on Wednesday last week with no advanced warning to PUJ and other motorists. They just positioned 4 Citom at every major intersection between Shangri-La and Marco Polo to stop the traffic flow so the 'test convoy' could speed through red lights. They even had a helicopter in the air to report which roads were gridlocked. No way when the delegates start to arrive they can get anywhere near 30 minutes from Mactan to Marco Polo unless they take that damn chopper.

THREE women face life imprisonment after a court found them guilty of trafficking more than 20 women in Cebu City three years ago.

Regional Trial Court Branch 17 Judge Marivic Daray convicted Janeth Bughao, Genevieve Badiang and Sheila Dedicatoria yesterday afternoon.

Prosecution witnesses, including dancers, testified that the three managed the sex trafficking operation of the Red Lips Bar, which agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 7 raided last June 21,2012.

The operation led to the rescue of 26 young women, most of them from Cebu City.

Lawyer John Tanagho, the International Justice Mission deputy field office director, welcomed the conviction.

"Today's convictions give justice to all 26 women who were rescued by NBI from the bar and serve as a reminder to every trafficker, bar owner, and mama-san that the cost of trafficking is hard jail time," he said in a press statement.

Some of the victims were single mothers, who were reportedly forced to work in the bar to feed their children.

Some of those rescued by the NBI were also former waitresses who decided to work in the bar after realizing their earnings as waitresses were not enough.

The NBI 7 filed complaints against Bughao, Badiang and Dedicatoria for violating Republic Act 9208, or the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003, before the Office of the City Prosecutor.

The prosecutors found enough evidence against the accused and filed cases against them in court.

Six witnesses were presented by the prosecution during the trial, including two NBI agents, a private complainant, two victims and a social worker from the Department of Social Welfare and Development 7.

"The conviction of three mama-sans from Red Lips Bikini Bar for qualified trafficking in persons shows that no one is above the law, not even the managers of a big bar on Mango Ave. IJM commends Judge Daray for convicting the three accused for trafficking young women for prostitution and sexual exploitation," said Tanagho.

Under RA 9208, it is unlawful for a person "to recruit, transport, transfer; harbor, provide, or receive a person by any means, including those done under the pretext of domestic or overseas employment or training or apprenticeship, for the purpose of prostitution, pornography, sexual exploitation, forced labor, slavery, involuntary servitude or debt bondage. ".

The law was amended by RA 10364, which does not give offenders the confidentiality clause they enjoyed while RA 9208 was in effect. The amended version also gives individuals who rescue victims of trafficking immunity from cases.

All over 18, some part time as at college and all did so for cash. Some to help family and pay school fees. None were ever forced and went to the bar to volunteer to dance. Be sure to get your ticket early as they sell out at times. But you are pushing it with 4:30 arrival because the taxi may take 20-30 minutes with traffic and there is usually a long line for taxis at pier 1.

Two laptops that contained photos of women in different age brackets who were either posing nude or clad in skimpy attires were also found in the scene, along with several sex toys, pieces of lingerie, gadgets, and instruments apparently used for pornography.

Victims' affidavit.

The rescued victims in their judicial affidavit claimed they met Allsopp through Facebook and that he allegedly recruited and offered them a deal where he would assist them in finding foreigner husbands allegedly on the condition that they would submit sexy and nude photos of themselves.

The victims also alleged that Allsopp opened, created, and maintained individual accounts for them, where their nude and pornographic pictures were downloaded and viewed in a dating website.

The victims also claimed in their affidavit that Allsopp had allegedly consummated sexual favors from all of them by allegedly threatening them with physical harm and intimidation and allegedly deceiving them with unfulfilled promises.

Penaflor, however, dismissed the seven counts of [CodeWord123] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord123) filed against Allsopp for lack of evidence.

In an interview after he was arrested, Allsopp described as unfounded the allegations against him, claiming that he was in the country for just a week and was on vacation when he was arrested.

The guy is bailed as CDN seems to suggest. They throw trafficking at all foreigners and many times hard to stick if the person comes to the room willingly and can be proven etc So whatever the judge saw she thought the ladies were some way apparently using bola bola.

Recently a westerner was travelling to Europe with his pinay lady. She has traveled a lot so her passport is full of stamps etc from Europe / Asia etc.

At immigration she was asked for her return ticket to Cebu! First time ever she has been asked. This caused confusion and a slight problem as no hard copy and the guy wanted his hard copy. Went to the airline desk but it refused (WTF!) to print the ticket (only in the Philippines I think that an airline won't print the ticket).

In the end the super slow Mactan airport kicked in and they got the email and ticket on the smartphone. Showed the guy but he insisted on a hard copy! WTF again. With some discussion and calling the supervisor all was sorted but what a farce and the guy not impressed.

The cutie suspects the officer was doing this due to local Barangay politics as he asked her a lot of personal questions that normally no passport officer would do and she thinks he is from a rival political clan (based on is name and her name).

Just a heads up as I know some members have been / are travelling son with their cuties from Mactan so just make sure you have on the smartphone a copy of the ticket and remember the WiFi is painfully slow at time.

I like the Shangri La as always a quality place, and the Movenpick is not bad but I would not go near Plantation Bay as way too many Japs / Korean on my last visit and the food was not great. Also look at the Abaca Resort very pricey but very nice (I frequent a few of the Abaca restos also and never have a bad time). Irony Monger has stayed at the Crimson Resort and I did visit him there, seems OK nice rooms and beach was OK just it was so hard to find as at that time the signage was terrible.

Best beaches. I never think those in Mactan are the best but am sure many will disagree. I have been to Malapascua, Danao, Bogo and some nice one there, Camotes also but these are a drag from Cebu itself and can take a day to get to. The best of a mediocre lot are probably found on Malapascua Island and Bantayan Island located in the far north of the province. Palawan has some very pretty beaches with a minimum of tourist crap. My two favorite beaches thus far are Sabang Beach and Long Beach. Last year I tried to go to Cloud 9, Siargao, but my flight was cancelled while I was waiting in line at 4:30 am due to the infamous power outage at the Manila airport. I still want to visit Cloud 9 and nearby Daku Island, but on my next trip I will be heading to a private beach around 40 minutes by Banka from Port Barton. Aside from 3 beach cabins and a restaurant lodge there is nothing going on at Secret Cove. My favorite PI girl and I should have an amazing time.

As to why we can't have it all: great sex venues and a beautiful, laid back, natural beach in one fabulous location; It is pretty obvious, because the two are at inherit odds with one another. To support a great P4 P scene there must be a significant number of customers, but a large number of customers / tourists also creates demand for all kinds of other services which destroys the peaceful naturalness of a great beach destination. Here are some examples:

Pataya arguable one of the best p4 p destinations in the world. The beach is polluted and sucks. Need I say any more?

Patong, Phuket is WAY overdeveloped IMHO, but at least there are still some very nice beaches scattered around the island. P4 P not nearly as good as in Pattaya and Patong P4 P is overpriced.

Ko Samui is overdeveloped as well IMHO (all Thai beaches suffer from this problem.) but arguably nicer (more natural) than Phuket. P4 P scene is not as good however as Patong, but acceptable if need be.

Boracay is overdeveloped and touristy IMHO, but again that is why there is a P4 P scene though not nearly as good as the one in AC.

Sabang, Puerto Galera is another PI destination with a relatively viable nightlife and decent beaches / scuba diving nearby. I have not been, but it is on my to do list.

And from here the beach / nightlife trade off gets far worse or far better depending on ones point of view. Like Ko Chang with a few bars and one nightclub and some very nice though somewhat overdeveloped beaches to Ko Lipe with 1 or two very small bars (very limited opportunities) on the entire island, yet one of the more beautiful and natural / less developed of Thai Islands.

I could go on and on with the list, but I think you guys get the picture. The better the P4 P the worse the beach scene. The better ie more natural and less developed the beach scene the less viable the P4 P. So when I want to monger I go to the best mongering water holes I know like BKK, Pattaya, MNL, Jakarta, AC, Macau, Phnom, ect, ect and have a great time. And when I want to kick back and enjoy relatively unspoiled natural beach destinations, I prefer the BYO places where the beaches are beautiful and quiet and there are no girly bars at all. At these BYO destinations I can then either bring a girl I know and like a lot along for fun in the sun or I can go solo to relax and recharge. This is what works for me.

Saw the FR from NB and I agree with his views regarding the Philippines. Mactan is OK but I am not the greatest fan. Bogo has maybe some nice parts, Camotoes also, Malapascua the same.

Boracay is really not a nice place IMHO and way over priced (I have a friend there now who confirms this).

As for the rest of the world FF? Cable Beach yes but plenty in Brazil (Buzios for example) and other parts of Aussie also (example. Cape LE Grand Hellfire Bay or Lucky Bay), Thailand and Malaysia. The list is endless.

But as this is PI. There are nice ones but many are as NB said and if you want really unspoilt ones there are but a few IMHO.

From Manila; Cebu Pacific, Air Asia, and Philippine Airlines all fly to Puerto Princess with many flights scheduled every day for under 4200 p round trip. I also flew Cebu Pacific from Cebu City to Puerto Princessa. So getting on Palawan is not a problem. Sabang Beach is approximately 90 minutes by road from the airport, Port Barton / San Vincente (Long Beach) is approximately 3 hours, and El Nido is 5 hours by car from the airport. I have always paid up and arranged with the hotel for round trip private van service. The cost is 3000 p one way to Sabang and 4500 p to Port Barton. This price was for driver and private van / limo service for up to 6 passengers so it really pays / saves money if you find other travelers to share the cost. There is very inexpensive local Jeepney service too, but the trip becomes much longer and more tiring. I do not recommend the Jeepney mode of transport especially if you only have 4 or 5 days on the island. If it is just you, renting a motorcycle is another viable mode of transportation around the island. There is also scheduled direct semi private flights with Air Swift from Manila to El Nido in twin engine planes. Check them out if you want to go to El Nido and save a lot of time time / not money. LOL. I believe the price is around 12,000 p round trip from MNL to El Nido. http://air-swift.com/.

Accommodations:

On Sabang Beach I highly recommend the Daluyon Beach & Mountain Resort. This is the nicest hotel on the beach. Rates vary as low as $119 to $160/ night for the Deluxe A room depending on how booked they are. It is worth the price.

On my next trip I have booked a cabin at the remote, more upscale, totally private, accessible by sea only; Secret Paradise Resort near Port Barton. http://secretparadiseresort.com/ The place looks nice and gets high reviews. It fits my goal for a small, romantic, and isolated resort for me and my 2 girls.

There are many new resorts opening up in the Port Barton / San Vicente area. You should do a little research on them with Trip Advisors and other sources for more information. San Vicente is adjacent to Long Beach, a really beautiful, near pristine 14 K beach. It is really nice. Port Barton is really nice too and from there you can hire bancas by the day to go out and explore the many virgin island beaches and coral reefs. Sabang Beach is beautiful and great too, especially if you stay at the Daluyon Resort.

Remember these are all BYO girl destinations. There is a very small bar scene in Puerto Princessa, but no beach, so I would not recommend staying in PP except for maybe your last night on the island. El Nido has bars, but mainly for tourists. Don't even think about scoring there, but you never know. Sometimes things happen when you least expect it. For example, one afternoon I met two young PP girls on Sabang Beach. The plain girl had an Army boyfriend stationed nearby and that was why she had come to Sabang. Her girl friend, the pretty one, was there acting as a chaperone or something. I enjoyed a real nice evening with the pretty girl under the stars while the army guy went off with his girl. Basically, what is it worth to you?I would say a little more than 2 k for the day even though all the others are thrown in as cash is what they need to help the family. I would pay 4 k but as DG said "what is it worth to you" given that hotel day rates at beach resorts are silly prices IMHO, the 4 k is really nothing in the overall budget.

On top of the food there will be t shirts, small presents / pasalubongs and a bikini or two maybe new pair of Havianas (max 2 k pesos in Ayala).

WC.Last month, we traveled from Cebu-Tagbilaran RT on Ocean Jet. One medium bag each, had to be passed thru metal detector type device at the pier ticketing office / check-in area. Seemed perfunctory, no hassles.

Outbound, bags were required to be separately ticketed, with a small extra fee which included porter loading onto the vessel. Upon arrival, just grabbed our bags from the luggage rack area in the middle of the boat, and carried them off ourselves over the wooden board gangplank. A bit of a walk to the parking / taxi area.

Saw locals who just carried their own bags and goods without paying the extra luggage fee.

In all my years of coming to the Philippines I have yet to take a fast-craft, so I was wondering about something.

Has anyone taken a ferry with a suitcase full of marital aids? Was this an issue?

In the past when a security guard would go through my stuff and discover my stash of naughty toys, I would make a joke or two and the security guard would laugh and send me though without issue. Not sure about this when it comes to taking a ferry.

I have heard through the grapevine that security goes through everything in detail when getting on a ferry, so just curious to know what others have experienced.

What about in your carry on bag when flying? Any issues at the airport?

I usually fly and put everything in my checked luggage, but next trip I want to travel light with only a carry on bag, and get off the beaten path somewhat.

Local social media are reporting a pitched battle just a few hours ago in Inabanga, Bohol, between government forces (PNP and Army) and a heavily armed bandit group, possibly Abu Sayaf. Reportedly, 5 bandits, as well as 1 policeman and 3 Army soldiers, have been killed.

Inabanga is on the north-northeastern coast of Bohol, approximately 70 km north of Tagbilaran. The bandit group reportedly came in by boat (I. E. , over the water) from Mindanao to Inabanga. Note that Inabanga is just across the water (Cebu Strait), about 60 km from Cebu City. Inabanga is actually closer to Cebu City than to Tagbilaran.

Although not yet entirely clear, this appears to be legitimate breaking news, and not unsubstantiated rumor or fake news. If true, then, as the desk sergeant used to say on Hill Street Blues: "Let's be careful out there (in Cebu)".

I find the place on the ground floor inside metro to be the best rate.

The other is the 4th floor money changer at Ayala mall. It's a bit tricky to find. It's between Gold's Gym and the food court.Had a fair wad of AUD to change so thought I would do the trek around Ayala to compare rates.

Ayala terraces 3rd floor called XChange near Shakeys = 36.6 AUDPHP.

GPC Money Exchange on GF near centre of Ayala near BO's Coffee = 36.10 AUDPHP.

Basement of Rustans (Westn Union next door) = 36.8 AUDPHP.

Core Pacific L4 in the laneway where all the transfer shops are near Gold's Gym = 36.70.

Stall inside The Maze L3 between Rustans and Metro (the Maze is a walkway with clothes and telco stalls) = 37.25 AUDPHP.

Could not find one inside Metro. Not sure if WR's near Western Union is the same as the one in Rustans next to Western Union.

I set up my account in Manila in 1997 with a very helpful GRO (called a Customer Service Representative in bank-speak).

I agreed for my whole-of-salary (foreign) monthly remittance to be directly deposited into the account which meant it was flagged "no fees".

That's 20 years ago and apparently the flag is still flying.

My question is: what is Mactan like? Is it a good place for girly bars? Internet hook-ups? (I. E. , will girls from Cebu be willing to come to Mactan; are there plenty of internet girls already in Mactan?) If Mactan is not so good for girly action, is it reasonable to commute from Mactan to Cebu City at night, or is it too far?

IgoforAsian.For 3-4 days I would stay Ayala IE in the centre. Mactan is not far but given the awful traffic and bad roads coupled with roadwroks, it makes the trip to the city very long and sweaty at times. My best Ayala to Mactan was 40 minutes on a Sunday morning with roadworks, my worst 2+ hours (either way). If you only have a few days stay in one place as plenty cuties in the centre. Once had a girl ceom from Mactan to me and took her 3 hrs but very likely a mix of traffic and pinay time issues. Girls may come no issue but are you ready for the delays?

For diving? Those I know go further afield (Moaboal, Bantayan). The beach resorts in Mactan are nice but very expensive so be warned.

If Mango then you are close to the clubs, bars etc and could try others nearby where there are plenty of FLs but don't pick FLs from the street IMHO as some are set ups etc and also watch your pockets there at night.

Have been in Cebu for around 2 weeks and 9 days to go before going back to APD (Australian Pussy Desert).

Mango Bikini bars: There were at least 1 or 2 decent looking girls in each bar, my favourites were BGs, Vikings, Sisters and the place next to Love City. There is a lot of pressure to buy LDs at all bars, as soon as you walk in you will get hounded by around 4 mediocre girls at least, and after 1 minute of the usual questions (where are you from, etc), you will be asked buy LDs. After fighting them off, you can assess the quality and decide who you want to talk to. I did not discuss barfines but spent at least 4 nights barhopping all the bars and chatting to girls I found a little bit attractive. You can certainly exchange numbers / FB in the bars, and arrange to meet them after their shift (this worked quite well for me). Got sick of the boring conversation of 95% of the girls. Settled on 1 attractive girl who was the right combination of sexy face / body and tolerably interesting personality. She came to meet me several times and became a steady GF of sorts. To be honest, I couldn't be bothered trying to replace her, as the boredom of meeting and talking to new Cebu girls was definitely an issue (compared to Makati).

Mango Square bars: The bar called Hype was good, mainly Filipino crowd and a happy environment. Always a few freelancers around, and freebies to be had as well. All in all, I quite enjoyed this place, and hooked up once with a freebie too (she had enough of her own money apparently). Met a group of freelancers that were always doing the rounds. Got to know their friends and in the end it was good to make connections. Upstairs from the escalator is another interesting place, Club Holic. Also mainly Filipino place, but if you are friendly and approach with some interesting conversation, it pays dividends.

Oqtagon: Infested with Korean student types. Plenty of girls trying to look Korean / act Korean frequent this place. Mixed experience here. Girls English skills and general level of intelligent conversation was at an all time low. When girls focus on hanging out with the K Crowd, it seems that they lose further IQ points than what they started with. A bit disappointing.

Club Lotus: Similar to Oqtagon. Ear splitting music levels.

Comparison to Manila: Cebu is not as good as Manila for girls. Education level / English skills / Banter / Basic Intelligence is much higher in Makati. Cheers!Looking back on the 18 days here, it got progressively much better as I got into the swing of opening conversations (in Cebu, the guy always has to open), I think I was a bit slow off the mark but met some cool locals at Liv Superclub and from there on it was a much better experience going out in groups. Liv is hopping from Thursday onwards (get a table on weekends and you will be in a good position to talk to everyone - 3 k consumable), and the more educated crowd goes there and I recommend it. Like a smaller version of the Fort Bonifacio clubs on the weekend. Lots of ladyboys though, so watch out. Based on reading the forum and generous guidance and assistance of Wicked Roger, I decided to stay at Quest Hotel in Ayala. Very happy with the hotel and location.

I have walked the mall and been approached by a few FL's. They did not turn me on.

SW4.My info maybe dated but here goes. On the basis of recos on ISG I stayed at the Mango Hotel. I found accommodations in Cebu were not cheap. That hotel is within a reasonable hike to the strip of girlie bars located on the same street and not far from the Ayala Mall. Robinson Mall is another option to engage in that unique Philippine pastime known as malling. You may want to investigate an option for girls commonly known as "Jonquerra" which is a Moniker for where hookers congregate. You may want to ask a taxi driver for its location. When I was there I saw taxis driving by stopping for a moment while the passenger picked out a girl. Diamonds in the rough can be found at budget prices. Nowadays I would Think that WeChat would probably work very well in Cebu.

SW4.All depends on your budget and other things like do you need very good Wifi, do you want to be near the malls (SM or Ayala) or go to Mactan / Lapu Lapu and stay there as getting from there to the centre (eg Ayala Mall) can't be a nightmare. You could stay IT park airbnb or cheap hotel and taxi is about 80 pesos to Ayala on a good day when traffic is not too bad.

Personally I would never try Jonquerra but that is me. Others like the more riskier side of life and do visit but they tell me the quality can be bad but us cheap. YMMV naturally. Same goes for the walkers around Ayala. See my FR on them and my views. But each to his own SirWilliam.

As for hotels, budget is the key so best PM me as that was is easier. For girls? Bars in Mango or use the web sites if you have the time. Prices vary a lots KTVs also but many of these are now over run with Koreans and Japs and are not my scene.

About 3 weeks ago I was in Cebu and my allergies were acting up. Back home I usually would go for an allergy shot and be cured for a while.

I decided to try the clinic, Care and Cure located in basement 2 of Ayala Mall. Wasn't sure how great the care would be. I was pleasantly surprised the Doctors knew what they are doing. I prefer the beaches up North. Malapascua or Bantayan Island. Both take some time to get to. Take a 3-4 hour bus or v-hire to a ferry. Both ferry's are relatively short. Or if you have deep pockets take a cab up 2-3 k pesos. Beaches are beautiful white sand and water is fantastic. I also liked Moalboal but not as much. It's south and on the west coast of Cebu and a shorter trip. It's also close to Kawassan Falls and Osmena Peak if you want to mix it up. Alcoy beaches were ok. Beach wasn't that deep and a lot of day trippers but ok beach and about a 2-3 hour trip. I also liked island hopping off Mactan. Mactan beaches are man made and not great but spending a day island hopping was pretty cool and some of these little islands have nice beaches. Also note that Bohol is only a few hour ferry ride away from Cebu City and there are some decent beaches there. Hope this helps.

Well spent approx 2 weeks here and despite research, planning and effort thought. Sorry what's all the hype about.

Positives. Hotel = Quest 'close to Ayala & faclities pretty good esp breakfast.

Negatives. Food. Average to WTF. Ate at some decent restaurants in Ayala but nothing great. If you are going spend more if you want decent food. Greek and Italian restaurant on opposite side to shops is where finally I would only eat (but Vietnamese ok. Banana Leaf).

Other food was either crap / too small or just poor. Don't come here for the food.

Manila is the capital of the country. More options, better choices. But Cebu is just a provincial city. Oh well, it resulted in at least two full nights of siren serenades as every fire truck in Cebu province came and went regularly.

Fortunately, I met two lovelies on Pina Love and Filipino Cupid -- and one dud. In fact, I was overwhelmed by choices. Only one of the the three (the dud) even mentioned money.

All in all a nice visit. I'd rather not have the fire experience, however.

As stated before, the mall is open and back in action. The entire Metro store is closed, all floors from the basement to the fifth floor. From the outside you can see the extensive fire damage. To think that a proper working fire sprinkler system would have contained the fire to a few hundred square feet!

Spent a few days in Cebu before my AC trip. Was a very pleasant place, but I did make a few newbie type mistakes.

2. Taxis were very cheap and the drivers were honest. All of them switched on the meter without my asking and no need to haggle.

3. Quest Hotel was full, so I stayed at the new Mezzo Hotel about 1. 3 kms away from Ayala Mall. Hotel was completely overrun by Cheap Charlie Chinese package tourists. They were rude, noisy and greedy. Most of the food on their plates at the breakfast buffets went to waste. Can someone please advise why a bunch of old Chinese people (family groups and old couples) would be in Cebu City? They weren't there to monger, dive or swim so what would be the purpose? I know its probably a reward from the Communist Party for meeting factory production targets, but still.

4. Went to Mango Street on two nights and visited most of the Bikini Bars. The patrons were all Koreans, who seemed to get special treatment. Whenever a bunch of Koreans entered, the mamasan would organise a quick line up of the girls for their benefit. No such courtesy for me and I was effectively ignored.

5. Ayala Mall for FL pickups is a waste of time. I spent a bit of time in WRs Office (Bo's Coffee) and observed. Spoke to a couple of chicks on the verandah and decided that they were too fat and ugly to warrant a financial discussion. Most of the FLs are has beens, so nothing to see here. Keep moving.

There are around 10 foreigners on similar charges in Cebu City Jail alone and probably another 20-30 scattered among the other jails in Cebu Province. Most are much less egregious than this case and convictions are still quite rare. However the test for.

Getting sent to jail is very low. Probable cause of a qualified offence. In practice probable cause is interpreted as the often largely fictional case built by the PNP / NBI "sounds suspicious to me" by a city fiscal (Prosecutor) who is heavily incentivised both politically and financially to send foreigners to jail on sex related charges.

The definitions of the relevant crimes are ludicrously broad and anything to do with minors or more than 3 people (either girls or punters) risks being sent straight to jail to fight the case from there. If that happens you are probably looking at 1 year if you can get bail or 3-8 years to hear the whole case if bail is denied, 20-120 years if convicted. The most common problem is people getting involved with girls who have claimed they are 18+ but in fact turn out to be minors. You need to figure that they will concoct some excuse to examine cameras and laptops. If you wish to visit to day goodbye or provide some support to the other 4 Western prisoners there formal visiting days for their section are Thursday and Sunday but foreigners visiting other foreigners can probably talk their way in most days. If you are not up to a visit but wish to show some support 1 option would be to send books / magazines. This is best done by sending an Angkas Moto there (Angkas is a very useful app to download if you want to get around Cebu on a motorbike or send people / packages at around half the price of taxis) (about 100 peso) and address any stuff to International Welfare Department, Cebu City Jail, Male Dorm, Kalunasan.
