I just heard Ermita is not a good place to be walking at night alone...Don't know if it is true...I'm with GE and YM! We all know Ermita is seedy but unsafe?
Walked from LA Cafe to Cherry Blossoms hotel across from Robinsons several times last week at all hours and no problem whatsoever.
I just heard Ermita is not a good place to be walking at night alone...Don't know if it is true...To sum it up, Ermita looks a lot worse than it really is. Other than tolerating the beggars and scammers on Mabini St., Ermita, although gritty, is not a dangerous place to move about even into the wee hours of the morning.

Any comments?

I have never stayed at the Intercontinental but I have stayed at a few 5 star hotels in Makati and they are all girl friendly from my expirience, some senior members may give their more indepth knowlidge as I have only been to Manila a small number of times.
Yes LA Cafe is a good place to have a good night out I find it lots of fun.

InterCon is GF but now I stay in teh Dusit around teh coner, recently refurbished and a very nice hotel. Try that as good value.
LA - my views may tend to differ but certainly a natural place to go if you are short of time.
Or PM me as can help you with contacts - come to your hotel etc. Ask Good Enough as he (and others) have used this route as easier etc. But if you like the fun of looking and choosing etc LA is fine but I have never been that impressed or a great fan of LA Cafe (my view gents...)
And if you come back late at night ask the taxi guy for a direct route to the hotel, dont get teh taxis from immediately outside (walk down the road) as some will take you the back routes and via a police shake down... (so have a photocopy of you docs in your back pocket not the original - read earlier reprot on this)

I agree with WR, the Dusit is a nicer place for about the same money, but the Intercon is definitely girl friendly, as are all the five star hotels in Makati. As to LA, I differ with WR here, since I think it can be a lot of phone--almost an endlessly changing cinema verite experience. On the other hand, as a beneficiary of WR's largess, I can also state with certainty that his offer of a contact should not be turned down lightly His contact is excellent and always delivers. The difference of course is that there's no thrill of the chase, or of finding the rose among thorns as there is at LA. But, if you're there for more than one night you can explore both options and decide which appeals to you more.
If you do go to LA, you might as well check out G Point as well. It's on Padre Faure St., about a ten minute walk from LA. It's smaller, but it's friendlier and, to me, more fun, though more hit or miss than LA.

Wr makes a good point that reminds me of funny story from this weeeknds trip. I used to live in Manila and one of best pieces of advice I got was to carry a photocopy of licence. So if stopped by those fine MMDA fellows, alway used to show them the pcopy. They would insist to get the original, but I would always show the details same. Point being that if they get the original you have to pay to get it back. One way or another.

I prefer Hilton chains but take Priority Club points when there isn't a Hilton Family Hotel. I am traveling direct from the USA. I arrive Saturday Night at 11:55 PM. I believe the LA Cafe is open 24/7, Edsa Complex closes at 3am, bars on P.Borgos open until 4 or 5 am depending on the night of the week.
I don't know the Intercontinental but getting around the city is not a problem after midnight, cabs are very cheap ------- just insist the meter is switched on, it starts at 30 pesos with a 10 peso surcharge.

LA Cafe, although open all hours, is a bit far from the Intercontinental. At 2 AM, there shouldn't be too much traffic but might still take 20-30 minutes. Assuming time is more valuable than actual peso amount (assumption based on staying at Intercon, flying in for a limited period of time), Burgos is the obvious closest, albeit most expensive, place. Also, can try to entice some of the Burgos dancers to forgo BF and just meet you after 3 or 4 AM when they get off. Also, the prices at Palacio drop then, so should be a total of 2-3k for a pop.
Another piece of advice is, screw the Intercon points and just stay over in Ermita somewhere, definitely will have more "bang for buck" so to speak. You're getting points to build up to a free stay, but the cost of Intercon is USD 120+, most places in Ermita will be half that. Time management makes much more sense when you've traveled all that way. To each their own. Have a great time either way

Went to LA Cafe on Sunday night. It was around 10:30, taxi ride was 130P and took about 20 mins. It is worth the ride.

For dessert tonight I visited the Roman Suites. My last two visits to Don Pedro's were ho-hum, got the "pro girl, " followed by "tits. For this weeks distraction I went back to Palacio Don Pedro in the Burgeos area of Makati in search of my amazing September GFE. Wild West has recently changed ownership and the barfine is up to 3,000 pesos. I do not know what is going on but the seem to be following the "tried and true" Philippines business model of trying to charge more for the same thing then complaining that they can not make any money when their customers don't return.
Was in Wild West right before Christmas and I was quoted 3,000 pesos by the new and pushy mamasan. I laughed and walked out and went to Flamingo. Used to be a regular at Wild West but I will not return.

Just back from Burgos and transit MNL often... Hollywood bar (some folks hate it, some like it, I happen to like it) is 390 for LD, 3900 for BF but can get a reduction in the BF costs and the girls want about 3000 for their time. Check into a hotel in Makati. One of the top first rate joints, Shang, Renaissance etc. Leave all your valuable shit there in the room safe. Go and meet her with only the essentials and enough money to move around. Probably about 15,000PHP will be good. Take care, good luck and have fun.

Good advice GE and I would second that. All the 'out of town' girls I want to see or see me come to Makati (or Cebu when I am there). If she really loves you she will come, tell her you will pay her fare once she arrives so you are a gentleman, kind etc but I would not go anywhere in Manila like that as a first timer. One hour by train and an hour back, and meet the family. You're setting yourself up to be a meal ticket. Also be prepared to be in shock when you get to her place. I'd suggest to meet you her half way, if it you click together then you can meet the family.

Thanks to all of you for sound advice. It seems that most of you suggest not going to her place. Considering the fact I am not in love with her and there are millions of girls in PI ready and willing to open their legs for foreign guys, if she does not like it that I will NOT go to her home, then I will find another chick.
I will tell her I will send her money (just a little) for her to take the train from her home town to meet me. I will be honest with her (well....not totally honest) and tell her I am concerned about going to an unknown city. Agree with Dan. Go to a bar and meet for a drink. If I BF on Burgos (and in the grand scheme of things, we are talking small money versus many places so I live with it for convenience an dease. And good lookers) then I usually go to another bar for a drink somewhere away from the street anyway. Malate can be fun and you can bar hop. You get to know the girl a bit better, do the banter thing and the drinks are much cheaper.
If she works in Fridays then she will be looking to get out of having to go there for an evening. And yep, she will just ring in sick so don; t fall for anyway "I need to pay money to the bar" line. Personally I like Fridays and the girls are great so you are probably onto a winner. I wonder which one it is? !
I really should explore the 'Cam' route. But am too lazy!

Any better ideas?There is Heckle and Jeckle , they have 2 pool tables , they are in the building on corner of Jupiter and Polaris and there is another place if you go further up Polaris at right hand side of street that also has 2 pool tables inside , it's like a biker bar inside. If you; re on Burgos street. Go straight over the cross raods back towards Makati ave. Its on the left side of street nearly opposite the hotel. Its on first floor ie up some stairs. Has about 10 tables in it.
Theres a lady called Dulce who is also on DIA hangs out there. Face has lots of pock marks but she has a very sweeet kiss.
I really should explore the 'Cam' route. But am too lazy!

Ok if you like to have happy hour prices you check out Rogues. I think that lame bar called tusk gives 50% on local drinks mon, wed and friday. Not sure about their barfines.
I recommend you get the cp number from the gurl and ask her to meet up laters. If they not into that, barfine would be another option, for sure, but a gurl who doesnt want to meet you up later aint much intersted in you anyway. So paying her 3900p barfine plus plus plus would be a waste of money in my eyes.
Makati is a waste of money anyway, unless you live there , like me :D and even that its annoying, good for barhop after work, or before work hahahahaha...:D but def. not the place to go when Im on holiday

I pulled a face and first time said it was not as much when I was here last year. Second time, just said, too expensive. Ask the girls - they will know if you can get a discount.
But then again, if it is quiet, Blink (Post below) is right. Just give her you cp number and get her to meet you. If you can be arsed to wait until 4am.

Any other options nearby?You can try Strumms on Jupiter, Hard Rock in Glorietta (though there are some working girls at the bar, at the tables it is fine.), or the bars in the Shang or Penn.
If you like adventure go to Malate. Around Adriadico there are lots and lots of legit bars, discos and live bands. Start with a drink in Havana on Adriadico (no working girls like in Greenbeld) and then just wander checking them all out.
You can also go further down to Ermita, try out Hobit House (great folk music and the little people are so cool) or Cowboy Grill. She will like all these and no pressure from working girls. Sometimes there is also a jazz singer at the bar in the Hyatt (as well as a casino).

Stopped off at the Greenbelt and few things caught my young but yet world-weary eyes. Rap music may have a lot to do with it, but generally, Filipinos do not recognize the awful connotations of the word. To them, it's just a word for black people with no particular emotive meaning. Their use of the word is pretty much consistent with their use of general English--using words they do not understand, that have gained currency somewhere else.
The use of the word is repulsive, but I don't believe they know that.

Honestly, I understand the difficulties that black people have with racism a lot of the time, and I can sympathise, because I didn't always get a fair shake from people either. I won't go into that. Anyway, I've always felt, as a white guy, that black guys had a big advantage in meeting white women. Maybe that was just my interpretation, but there are a lot of times I felt like if I were black I would have an easier time meeting white women. They seem drawn to black guys like... well, like Filipinas are apparently drawn to white guys.

Yes I do believe that 90 percent of the mongers on ISG are white males but believe it or not I get PMs from black guys all the time who love my post but most of them don't post. So I state things like that for them. I am probably a rare breed a late 20s something Black-American (lot of Africans living here already) cat living in SE Asia. I think I am at least from the bulging eyes I get from locals when they cross my path in hospitals and business deals... So I try to cover things like racism and all my experiences as I am sure there are black or non-whites who are curious as to how Pinoys react around different races.

Havana Café:
If it’s good enough for Good Enough than it is good enough for me. Hit Havana Café last night at the Green belt to see what talent was available. It was my first time in the joint. The place plays mostly Salsa music and the waiters even call the patrons “senor” or “senorita” (nice touch) when addressing you. The waitresses are all dressed in dresses with long splits creating this wrap around-looking effect with bright colored orange shirts. They really went all out to create this Latin American type atmosphere.
The Patrons:

First I would like to express my many thanks to the contributors to this board. This was my first visit to the Philippines and the information I learned was invaluable.
I arrived here about 5 days ago on business and have been mixing business and pleasure wherever I could. If you want great customer service and many happy girls just go an hour north to angeles city and visit fields ave. Dont even stop in burgos or edsa entertainment. I have gone every day for the last year to all the bars in burgos and most of the girls never changed. One burgos bar named billboard served me a drink with a pill capsule in the bottom of the glass. Since they could not explain how and why that occured I recommend dont ever go in that bar it is not to be trusted they could not explain how that capsule got in my shot of tequila. If you do go in burgos watch out for the Police they are known to be the most corrupt police in the philippines. If you are Arab decent the police will target you and will try to put a marijauna cigarrete or other drugs in your pocket using the viagra sales guys and ladyboys to put it in your pocket. Then they will arrest you and extort normally about 100,000 pesos from the 2 companians that I know it happened to.

I do agree Burgos has gone down hill and mostly I attribute that to the Philippines in general sliding under Gloria which is a shame as I quite like the country and the people. There are far fewer expats living in Manila and far fewer people going to Manila on business. As Burgos' cliental has generally tended to be non-Philippino higher income earners as there are fewer and fewer of these its business will continue to suffer. Aside from girls the number of people I know in the Philipines seems to continually shrink as people take jobs elsewhere and a good chunk of the expats that I know who are still there are looking for opportunities elsewhere.
I still enjoy Burgos when I make it to Manila, which is only once or twice a year now, but the quality of girls has slid. For the past year the girls I know have all been complaining how awful business is. Just a couple nights ago I was sitting with a couple Burgos girls that I've known for a few years who just arrived to freelance here in Hong Kong for a bit and was getting the same story. More nights then not they say working on Burgos costs them money by the time they pay for "make-up", transportation and food. They keep doing it as it is what they have done since they basically started working and every now and again they meet some guy who will send them a monthly stipend, and for the girls that can get a few of these they start to add up.
It is unfortunate as Burgos is one of my favorite places in Asia and my favorite place in the Philippines. Maybe, not that I will hold my breath, with the upcoming elections someone will get into power who will be more like Ramos was and make the economy and living standards improve.

To me Howzat has always been a place to meet up with the lads before everyone heading out to Burgos. Very similar to Handlebars in the regard. I mean other than Howzat and Handlebars there is not much for decent food around Burgos. What surprises me in the people that pop into Howzat for lunch.
It would make for an interesting poll, what proportion of Howzat customers who get there after 6pm would have a drink somewhere on Burgos that night. I for one would never use Howzat as anything other than a meeting place.

After another glorious trip to Dubai was welcomed back home to PI with wind that would turn over a Manila hot meat cart and rain that would flood a blocked sewer Manila Street. Spent the next few days in the crib. I have heard of being snowed in but rained in truly ridiculous.

Stopped off at the Greenbelt and few things caught my young but yet world-weary eyes. A group of Filipino males watching last year’s NBA championship with great enthusiasm… WTF! , a gay guy who stood in the bathroom mirror for about 5mins fixing his eccentric hair and all the European looking guys walking around with the stunning Filipinas, tall, slim, white skin, no doubt, educated nothing like what you usually see grace the pages of ISG or my own world for that matter. HSBC, Citibank and RCBC ATMs allow withdraws of PHP 20,000 per transaction. The max amount that I've been able to withdraw from these three banks, was up to 40k per transaction. Obviously this depends on your Bank issued ATM Card limit.
Pretty much rest of PI banks have max withdraw of 10k per transaction.

First off as far as I know, the woman gets a cut from their ladydrinks. Most of the time if the drink on Burgos is 300 pesos, they get 100 pesos. It's up to you if you want to tip more, I'm pretty sure if you come back they'll still want to sit with you. Burgos is maybe the worst place I've been to in regards to so many people having their hands out. The mamasans come from all over and the prices in most of the bars have almost everything in drinks in multiples of 50 or 100 pesos meaning they give you change without the small change to maybe give something to the waitress. They'll give you change in maybe a 50 pesos or 100 pesos and try to give you the look you should tip them that. Well if you only bought one drink that's pretty good percentage. And if you bought a ladydrink and you were getting whatever you got from her and she got 100 pesos, why the hell should you give them half of that. They give me this cheap charlie look if I take out 20 pesos instead.
But getting back, on occasion I'll tip if they were really good to me in many ways and they didn't push the ladydrinks too fast on me, and I don't mean the waitress pressure for more drinks. It will be anywhere from 50-100-maybe even 200. But that's me.

Yours is a newbie mistake. In PHI it helps to be firm in your dealings without worrying about your good persona image. What do you care if they think otherwise?
Just think we are going there to be serviced, not to sit and look pretty with girls. They are not your girlfriends. All tipping equates with service. If you take the girl out and she serves you well a tip is in order.

Man, don't let a taxi ride stop you from going to LA Cafe or anywhere else in Manila if you are scared of getting ripped off. Don't take a taxi sitting and waiting. Get one that is moving or dropping someone off. I'll be there in mid November and looking forward to it!There is also a City Gardens Ermita hotel that is alot closer to LA Cafe. I haven't stayed there myself but I've walked past it a few times and heard it was okay. Agoda.com has them at 45 usd. It's within walking distance to LA Cafe or a short cab ride depending on how you like to get around Ermita. I normally walk in Ermita until about midnight then take cabs after that but everyone has their own comfort level. If you wind up staying there then there is a bar called G Point that is near you and has a lunch buffet and another bar called Amazonia thats about a block before you get to La Cafe. Both are worth checking out but they are smaller than LA Cafe.

She told me that the bars are open Christmas eve and Christmas Day, as well as New Year's eve. Returning to the raison d'etre for the board (no urban lingo there, merely a well known phrase that probably isn't used in the ghetto), thought would advise that I have a Manila trip once more. 8th this year.
