I had nothing to do with that flame war and have never used the type of language involved.
AV has accused me of trolling on several occasions. Is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black?

I am with Jason Kraemer on this issue.
1) It IS the principle (so what if the overcharge is only a dollar?); it is ILLEGAL for a taxi driver to refuse to accept metered price for ANY trip within the MMDA, regardless of time of day, traffic whatever. I saw a Korean guy (maybe Koreans do get ripped off more, but passive Filipinos who are not aggro in negotiations get ripped off too) who was VERY SMART; he had the phone number for LTRCB (the people you complain to about public transport) clearly printed on his cellphone which he showed to the driver. Driver refuses meter, text his license number to LTRCB.
2) Manila is BY FAR the worst place in the PI for dishonest taxis. Manila also hosts the most newcomers or otherwise unsuspecting visitors.
3) with a little patience, you can always find a taxi that WILL accept meter.
4) NEVER take a hotel taxi or one waiting in front of a nightclub (unless you LIKE overpaying).
5) NEVER ask the fare they want. TELL THEM what you will pay BEFORE getting in. Once you get in make sure they touch the meter button. If they hesitate or start negotiating, IMMEDIATELY get out. NEVER waiver and remain firm (they respect that). Show uncertainty and expect to be fleeced.
I simply refuse to be scammed by scumbags. This is why I will be late (almost missed a flight once because of it)rather than AGREE to pay over meter. I ALWAYS tip generously IF the driver accepted my offer of meter without hesitation. If they haggle before agreeing to meter, they might get a small tip. If they complain AFTER agreeing to meter, not one centavo.
Once you reach agreement on the fare, many are very friendly and helpful.
Angeles trike drivers are WORSE than Manila taxi drivers. I've long said if you could develop a bomb that killed Abu Sayyaf AND the Angeles trike drivers, the PI would be a much better place.

I completely agree. I travel a lot for work and they are simply the worst. The problem for us foreigners is that we are their Christmas bonus. If we don't agree with their assessment, then we're cheap charlies, if we agree, then we're fools.
I also never ever give in even if it's 40 pesos ($1). However, if I get there safe and sound, then I give them a tip larger than they expect and tell them: "Kuya, please, I give you this tip, so that you don't have to try to rip off foreigners, Salamat po" Smile and leave and they usually appreciate it.
One time, I gave a guy a big tip, and went up to my appointment. 5 mins later, in my meeting, the building security guard comes up and asks if I left a cell phone in a taxi. The builiding security guy knew me, so he handed me my PHONE ($400 phone).
SO the moral of the story is, we should be good, and it comes around. And for those ethically challenged TAXI drivers. We should still try to turn them around. The simple fact is. They need money and again, we are their Christmas bonus.

I haven't been following this taxi debate very much, but I pretty much go along with HG and HB (don't expect me to call you "hunny buns").
I'd prefer to give a good tip to an honest driver rather than waste a second of my time negotiating with someone trying to squeeze me. Of course walking away from a taxi ends up taking more time, so I guess it's penny wise / pound foolish.
If you do walk away from a taxi, it's best to flag down the very next one. They've seen you walk away and they know why -- therefore more likely to just turn the meter on without any hassles. Also, if you are planning any long trips (to AC or Taal), ask prices from the driver who is taking you from the airport. Get his number. Later compare prices with another driver to get an idea about what is fair. Then call the airport taxi since they are often better quality, and the drivers speak better English. I think Cebu City requires airport taxis to have a special tourist license.
Besides Manila taxis and AC tricycles, I've had a bit of trouble in Davao with the driver taking the scenic route. I used to be a navigator so I usually figure out pretty quickly when I'm headed in the wrong direction.

I haven't heard this much moral outrage since the Women's Christian Temperance Union busted it's last saloon. Getting this pissed off over a few dishonest taxi drivers is, to me, a total waste of energy and emotion. If these guys who refuse to use meters [CodeWord140] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord140) you off, don't use them. Simple.
I was well armed with forum info before I headed to Manila. I started to use friendster and dateinasia as a good source to meet chicks. Friendster did nothing for me...we'll at least not yet. Arrived in manila Late Friday night for my first visit in over 4 years. Phil Air is not too bad. They have their own terminal so the customs, baggage and getting out out of there is easier than I remember the other terminal was.

FYI everyone, was in PI, Burgos Street last week and got stopped by a swarm of cops, because I had a beer bottle in the street. They told me and my friend to get into the car, threatening to arrest us. The guy was saying, this is a viloation of subsection...bullshit, blah blah blah, more bullshit. They was taking us to the police station to arrest us or something. So we just wanted to bribe the fuckers and get on with mongering. We ended up paying 2ooo pesos each, so a total of 4000 pesos. I was pissed, but did not want to argue, so paid them and got out of the car. If I had more time, and was not on vacation, I would have tried to bargain and maybe just get processed at the station. We just wanted to get out of there, because we only had several days in PI.
I was just wondering what is the police process at the station (like, how long would it have taken to get out of there?), and what would be the fine for drinking beer on the street? Was it a good move just to pay them off, or did we overpay and spoiled the market? :) hahaha.
PS. The question we asked to bribe them, so that they would not be so crooked looking if they said yes, was:
"How much is the fine? Can we just pay the fine now and not have to go down to the police station?"

Anyways, had fun roaming around PI on a pretty successfully fun mongering trip this past mid April. Learned a lot about how EDSA works. Had some hits and misses from there, but it seemed that my friends were pretty much satisfied and happy about EDSA, because we ended up going there every night. Edsas barfine is 1400 and ST is around 2000-3000, LT is 2500 to 4000. The prices vary, it pretty much depends on how hot the girl is. She dictates the price, so if you find a popular hot girl, she is going to ask for a premium and probably will only do short term. One recommendation is to not highlighted yourself by drinking beer and having a beer bottle in the street. If a swarm of cops in a foriegn country are telling you you are breaking their law, chalk it up to a learning experience and don't repeat it.

In Manila the only difference between the cops & the crim's is the cops have uniforms. Unfortunately this country is still riddled with cronyism & corruption. Every one, judges included, is looking to get there hands on more money. As an expat I can make this work in my favour sometimes with the appropriate schmoozing & relationship building but as a tourist it better to avoid the cops.
Just go about your business peaceably, dont draw attention to your self & you'll be fine. Getting into arguments with Manila cops is a no win situation.

Your question seems to be how do I avoid the country specific "subscriber can't be reached" message of where you are at the time?
The simple answer is turn your cp _OFF_ when not making/receiving calls.
Even when making/receiving calls its quite likely callers may see your caller ID different to usual & quickly conclude you are not where you say you are.
Low tech solution : Lie, say your normal cp is broken & being repaired (or stolen) for how ever many days is convenient. Turn your cp off & Just go 'off the air'.

I am not sure what you can do about your problem, when I travel to Philippines I am only there for 1 or 2 weeks at a time. Instead of getting a local SIM card I just use international roaming on my home SIM card. I can only guess that the message they recieve is the same message they would recieve if I was at home.

I take it you mean BF Resort subdivision, unless their is a hotel of this name (which I doubt). So you are staying with friends/relatives in a private residence?
If so the short answer is no, their is no P4P action in this place, as it is a residential area. There are undoubtedly bars and restaurants in the subdiv that may and may not have waitresses up to earning a few bucks overtime but this is at best, hit and miss. Out the main gate you are on Alabang-Zapote Road (otherwise known as Real Street) which does have several korean style KTV joints but personally I have never tried them. Best suggestion is to grab a taxi and head to EDSA/Malate/Ermita (about 20-30 minutes by Coastal tollway, depending on time of day), where you will have an embarassment of riches awaiting you.

There are a couple tiny places down that end of Ermita, but I've never felt very comfortable in that area, and never noticed any stunners in the bars / "bistros".
Disclaimer: it's been a good long while since I've done any exploring in that area, so I don't have anything to add, but appreciate DV's message.
Maybe I'll take a look my next trip to Manila.

With all due respect I think your comment about it been largely ‘bottom feeders’ at LA Café is, pun intended, a crock of shit. Apart from those scummy self appointed mamasans and the odd ‘brown sugar’ pusher, the girls represent a reasonable cross section found in any similar p4p establishment in the PI ranging from the fresh faced 18 year old (and younger unfortunately) to the grannies past their prime in Marcos’s day. I take the place with a grain of salt whenever I'm in there, much like the Blue Marlin Bar in San Jose, Costa Rica. Great place to just watch people. I'm on the picky side so I have not always pulled a girl out of there, particularly during daytime. Nights though, I almost always find company for my room in Ermita. For purposes of rating the talent, LA Cafe, IMHO, has it hands down over Blue Marlin and for price its about 75% less expensive.

and yes it does have a cross section i suppose, but the average is lower than most "similar p4p places" (actually there are no really "similar" places anywhere in the pi imho). upstairs, on weekend nights, there is some decent talent. but downstairs is almost exclusively bottom feeders imho, although the smoke is so thick down there that i only pass through at hi speed (while holding my breath as i dart up the stairs looking for an ac vent under which i can breathe again).
on most any night i think better talent can be had at edsa, and for sure on pburgos or at high end clubs in quezon city, than at la cafe.
as for the caliber of customers, i really do not notice (or rate) the guys so cannot offer an opinion.

I maintain this is still a great stop and yes you can get all types here. I was in Manila on a "dating" trip in mid-March. I had my arrival night - Saturday - free and my Sunday date stayed in her own hotel so I had Sunday night free too.

Its the Abigails that I think makes the LA Cafe a mongers paradise as a pick-up joint and the only sort of girls that really interests me in the place. The one girl who you gave 200 to presumably refused to do diddly. In that case I'm suprised you gave her anything. If you call out a plumber and they refuse to service your pipes, your not going to pay them, are you? Must admit I've never encountered a non-performer in LA Cafe, but there again I'm always specific about my requirements and make sure that the girl is aware that 'no play. No pay'. So I've only once had to boot a girl out and that was a girl who promised the world but failed to deliver. I am interested to know more about your experiences in Las Pinas KTV's. Were they the local 'hole in the wall' variety or one of the plusher establishments aimed at Koreans? What were prices like? Quality of girl? No bar fining system in place you say? The only mongering I've done in LP is impromptu meetings I've had with 'civilians' I've met in Southmall or pre-arranged trysts with AFF girls. Both a bit hit and miss. There is also apparently a girly bar area on Sucat that I imagine might be fun if maybe a local scene.

My question is what is the law in the PI in regards to everyone having some kind of picture ID? For example do they have some kind of crappy id card that can be faked at any copy machine or do they have a full blown picture id with governemnt seal and watermarks. Etc.
Please don't give me your unique opinion from the 3 girls that you barfined on your one trip to the PI. Someone that knows or has the ability to find out let the rest of us know so we don't all end up roomates in some prison in Manila!It is very easy to get a fake ID in philippines. Even i Recto all fake from birth certificate to marrage contract.

Ok. Maybe this is a differing view to that posted and whilst there are many Filipinas that are interested in us for our money its more than just that. At least for me. I've met and worked with Filipinas in Mid East, in Australia, Europe etc. And money wasnt there interest at all.
Recent trip to Europe one Filipina I khad known in KL, she took time off work to fly and meet me. Her expense.
Next week I have a trip to HK. Again a Filipina will join me. I'm paying half her airfare only.
Recent trip to Manila. A girl I know in Davao came to see me. She paid her fare. Again money not the issue at all.
These girls don't enjoy Filipinos as they are renowned as players (like were not. Hahah). And treat women not so well. Hopefully we white guys give them a bit more respect and sometimes crediblity. Treat them well. It comes back multiplied! But the point is. Some want money and are with us for money. But in my experience. Many Filipinas I bed do not have money on their mind. They just enjoy interesting company. And of course it helps if you look good too.
The clean cut, clean shaven, neat hair good clothes look serves me REAL WELL.

If they have never held down a professional job or have some college under her belt 9 times out of ten an ID is not needed bro. The only time she will need that is either to work a square job or when you start sending her pesos through Western Union.

i watched my ole lady try to use my credit card in grocery stores and was denied because the names didn't match up. i sent my share through western union back in the day so i know most of the time the id is required and the control number.

Maybe your girl was such a good customer of Western Union that she didn't need Id as they all knew her there.

As far as I know, there are no freelancer bars there. The go-go bars are all in one large building and in the central "lobby area", there is a little diner with overpriced slop. You might find a few ladies there eating -- especially when they finish work.
As for the best bar, it's best just to visit all of them. It's pretty easy to do. Firehouse has the largest lineup and the most customers.

As xman notes, EDSA is group of gogo bars, not freelancer places. LA Cafe is sort of unique in that regard.
I always liked Cotton Club best and know several nice looking girls there, Never a fan of Firehouse or Spacegirls. Casino and Pitstop also better than the others IMHO.

most of the malls i have been in i usually get approached by at least a few girls. most will expect you to make the first introductory moves. as for the names of the malls? it really depends on where you are staying, as metro manila is quite big. let us know what part of manila you will bbe staying and i sure we can give you the names of some places.

i was once a singapore monger, used to run thru 'em at the orchard road establishment (4 floors of *****s). you will do well in any mall in the philippines. in manila i would recommend any place but the robinson's mall close to ermita is probably best. just go sit down at one of the coffee shops or french bread bakers with a table facing passing traffic. the girls will troll by
and give you "the look" if you like, smile and nod to the empty seat next to you.
some malls have banned these girls and the security guards know the regulars on site doesn't stop 'em. a word of caution, some of these girls can be ****.

Cebu is all good. If you want square ( non-pros) girls they are in abundance. If you want bars not as much as Manila but you will find what you are looking for. Cebu has my grade A stamp of aproval. :)

A simple trip to the LA Cafe will be much better than any of the massage parlors. During the day you can hook up with students who are trying to pick up some extra money. You can search the forum, but if I remember correctly, the LA Cafe opens around noon.

EDSA complex is, I think, is not a place to linger long after you have found your f**kbuddy for the night. I used to basicly live in LA cafe since I would stay at the Boulevard Mansion for 5-6 months at a time on business trips. It was always close and conveient.
Regarding taking someone from Edsa to the Cafe, I have never done it myself, but for the most part the live bands are very good IMO in the evenings and once you bar fine a girl, if you take here there and she bails on you, you discover she isn't realy want you wanted, or some thing better catches your eye then it is the perfect place to be as far as I am concerned.

There are of course honeys who appear to have been there all night (and the reasons why are immediately apparent.)
However, you're forgetting the ones that have just returned from a bad experience in a hotel room, and have returned for a second opportunity. And those who are waiting for a friend who is entertaining in a nearby hotel. During my last visit, a group of honeys walked in at about 7:30am. Very odd I thought, because they looked like the 'upstairs Saturday night' variety. It turns out that they had just been released from jail, where they had stayed the night.
I admit, pickings are slim during early morning hours, but if you are patient (and desperate? ), you will usually find a honey who is worth an invitation to breakfast.

Interesting replies Gumby & Psdai. I've often wondered what the place was like at breakfast time and now I've some insight and its not as bad as I would have thought. I'm an afternoon/early evening visitor usually but the latest or maybe earliest I've left there is 4 when it was rocking, but I'd have thought that by 8 it would have been the domain of zonked out mongers and desperate chicks trying to earn the fare home.
What I do know is that some of the girls in there make the trip in from nearby provinces such as Rizal, and virtually live in the cafe, except when servicing clients, for maybe 48 hours or so until they have made enough dough to supplement their rent/living costs back home. They make this trip 1-3 times a month. What a life!!
I was in LA cafe on a weekend night. The girl I picked to take home was hungry. So since I was not hungry I gave her 100 pesos to go and eat. She left her purse and cell phone with me I guess so as not to loose a customer and went acroos the road to get something to eat.
I waited for an hour but she did not show up. I asked one of the girls to find out where she is and she went and asked the security people at the door.
The security people told her as many as 25 girls were picked up on the road and taken to the police station. The girl also told me the fine is 500 pesos cash and if the girl does not have money she has to stay there till morning. no case is filed.
The law or as it is interpreted by the police is unescorted girls cannot be walking by themselves after 12 midnight. And I understand that these raids take place on most weekends around LA cafe area.
To cut the long story short the girl came back after an hour and half and told
me that she hid inside the restaurent till the police left and she told me atleast 50 were taken away.
After that we were walking to my hotel and to my surprise and her horror a police van came in front of us driving slowly but they did not bother us and we had a good time.
If the girl or girls are escorted the police do not bother as I understand.

Her English wasn't the best, but I thought we'd agreed to an LT. I took her to my room around the corner at Boulevard Mansion, and, after a variety of delightful activities with her, delivered a resounding cup of coffee. We'd relaxed for only a few minutes when she suddenly jumped up and started dressing. I asked her what was going on, and she said she had only about 15 minutes to get to the corner of Taft and Pedro Gil to catch her 11pm bus back to Cavite. She said something about promises she'd made to her babysitter and daughter, and that the next bus wouldn't be until 9 or 10 am. I was not happy, but knew I wasn't going to get any further decent sex with her even if I insisted that she stay for an LT. So I renegotiated to an ST price and away she went.
My alarm went off about 6am, because, in the few minutes after my cup of coffee with the Cavite babe, I'd set it for 6 thinking my nearly 60 year old body would be sufficiently recharged by then for another energetic boom-boom with her. We chatted for a while, and without waiting for my invitation, she fairly directly told me she'd like to accompany me back to my hotel room. She was quite explicit and detailed about what she and I could do together. Whereas most of my previous LA pickups had involved whispering back and forth into each other's ears (in part to be heard over the music), this one was talking loudly enough for everyone around us to hear. The only aspect of our intended activities that wasn't known to those sitting nearby was the price, which we figured out later. I found her looks attractive and her directness appealing, so by 7 am or a little later we were headed out the door toward the Boulevard Mansion.
She turned out to be an animal in bed. After an extended period of virtually every form of activity, I delivered a morning cup of coffee. But she still wanted to keep going: "fuck me, fuck me," she kept repeating. So with what remained of my leftover turgidity and knowing full well I was unlikely to produce a multi-pop, I went about doing what she asked. I managed to keep it up for a couple minutes, and that proved to be enough. She came with a pronounced moan, her back and neck arched and rigid, and toes and fingers stiffly curled up and clutching at the bedding. She lay back motionless, smiling and staring at me, and within about 30 seconds she was sound asleep. I was flabbergasted. Interesting story Skip. She was probably pissed but the lack of the normal Filipina modesty and reticence suggest also the possibility of other substance ingestion being involved. There are more than a few shabu/brown sugar abusers in the LA Cafe and you can usually spot them by un-pinay style immodesty and outlandish behaviour.
Funnily enough I had a similar encounter last year (who knows, might be the same girl!!) but it was in Amazonia rather than LA Cafe. I occassionally use the place in the hope that it will become a viable alternative to the grotty LA Cafe. This is unfortunately never the case and that night the place was quiet as usually. Just wrapped up a full night out at Burgos in Makati. I started at Flamingos around 10pm, which was dreary as all hell and utterly deserted. There's nothing more bleak than an empty room with a few listless dancers and duff-duff music blaring for the benefit of no discernable audience.
I left quickly, negotiated the faux-cialis peddlers on the street and made it to Billboard. The vibe there was odd in that there were several groups of girls who seemed totally wrapped up in their own thing and weren't paying any mind to the customers. Eventually, after two or three shifts of girls shuffling onstage, the A team rolled out and did a relatively impressive number or two. One girl was a stunner and I asked the mamma to call her over. Everyone--the mamma, the waitress and the masseuse--found that funny for some reason but I assumed that they were just getting into the spirit of things. The Stunner and I had a few rounds of drinks (including tequila shots) and some snappy conversation, and I was about ready to spirit her away back to the Shang. Alas, when I asked her about it she told me that she NEVER leaves with men because she's there strictly as a dancer. I tried all the angles, but the answer was NEVER. (In the interest of full disclosure, I'll say that I'm not an ogre, was dressed well and generally don't have any problems w/women either for pay or free.) It was at that point that I realized why the crew there was laughing when I chose her to sit with me--I looked around the proverbial table and realized the sucker was ME.
After a blue-balltacular walk back to Flamingos with the idea that I'd find it even worse than when I left, I entered the club to find it bumping. Tons of hot girls on stage and just enough customers to make it feel active but not enough to pose any real competition for the quality girls. After 10 minutes or so the mamma came by and I requested a lithe young thing who happily came over and sat with me. A couple drinks and we were out of there for a bar-fine of 2200. (This is lower than what I expected after reading the fing forum.)
We went back to my room at the Shang and had about 2 hours of full-on, wild and hot monkey sex. The shower, the couch, the bed, no matter where we were it was better than a gf experience (which is not my thing) in that it felt like a hot pick-up from a bar that devolved into lust as opposed to a cuddly, chatty, giggly BSing session where I had to pretend to be interested. Nice report but it would be better served posted in the Makati section. The search function on this board has saved me alot of money over the years. A quick search would have revealed that most of the girls at Billboard do not barfine and that Flamingo, WWW, Magumbo, Rogues and Bandito have much lower barfines than the other places. That should help raise your "return" on your yields

Been very busy in past few hours an just sat back and realised that i was "fishing".
Have a 3 day Manila trip up coming... went thru all old phone numbers, who do I want to see who do I not. Went thru my other internet contacts, same modus openandi.

Ok so the trip went ahead and several here have commented on my intended plan. The plan was 5 in 3 days. Which for a guy over 50 plus, with some plumbing probs is about the right range of exertion. Young studs can do more. But I was talking about the act of getting 5 in a 3 days. Not how many times would do each.
Arrived in Manila Friday early evening. Have a friend who is very very energetic and who is always available for me. She recently lent some money from me (she had emergency. Very mousy but happy smile. We met in mall, shook hands and I said lets go. Again, no question of where we are going. She just came. In car and off to Sogo. Thankfully not same room, but same performance. Offered her little taxi fare and load money but highly offended by this. Anyways dropped her off and doubt we will ever see each other again. From there. Showered, changed and off to mall to meet the one Id scoped earlier. We went for drinks and light dinner and as she had shown up in tight shorts with great legs wasnt hard to get the hand on the leg during dinner and no resistance. Got to car and had big make out session. Drove her near to her home during which I had lots of fun groping. She was going to be number 4 the next day!
Rest of night in Burgos bars. Fun and drunk.
Day 2. Woke up to sound of crazy rain. Yeah the typhoon had arrived. Hd arranged for a meet with aformer Burgos lady who I've known for years (shes now 22 so guess I've known her since she was 18.) Shes now a good student.
Said Id meet her in Manila. Easier said than done. Roxas was flooded as were several other roads. Took me an hour to get to her and an hour to My regular Sogo. I was checking on flights which were being cancelled all morning. Hmmm. So we did our work and dropped her off. Drove to mall to collect what was going to be number 5. But floods meant big re-routing and was basically out of time. We met, made out in car park. But that was as much as could be done. Airport was a total zoo. Flew back home.
Didn't make the full 5 but figure I hit 4. And a half. All were effectively free (tho nothing is totally free! )
Along the way there was a chat with a cutie whos 19. Who suddenly felt maybe Id play be Santa Claus when she asked if she could borrow P2000 from me. I told her I never elnt money to anyone Id never had sex with. She replied, an hour later, I could have her if Id pay her. I was already ni schedule hell so nothing followed. And I don't generally follow the P4P route. Anyway. Was a great weekend.

Hmm well if you read my report from just two days ago... 3 of the 5 were from DIA.

It is about fifteen minutes at night without traffic. During the day, hard to tell with traffic since it can get horrendous. If you stay at Pan Pacific, you have Robinson's and Harrison's malls close by. I really liked the rooms at Pan Pacific and it is a little less than Shangri La or Manila Pen. Most hotels three star and up will have in room safes.

Have you considered renting a car and driving since there is a group. I have always been to the Phils alone, but have driven to Angeles 3 times.
The up side of driving is:
+Freedom to come and go on ur schedule.
+Easy to get out to Perimeter Rd & SM mall.
+Parking is no problem since no one drives to AC.
The downside is:
-Navigation and getting lost (unless you speak Tagalog)
-Police - I now figure at least one bribe into the budget.
-Gas is getting very expensive there too.
If you decide to rent and drive be aware of the following:
1. On EDSA, stay out of the BUS lanes (2000 php bribe on trip 1)
2. Change lanes judiciously & no swerving (2000 php bribe on trip 2)
3. Wear your seatbelts (2000 php bribe on trip 3 & this was only 1 block after leaving the rental location in makati).
Otherwise, have a great time.....if only I was there too......

Even if it is not your fault, the other party will try to come after you for compensation.
A more serious accident will result in a trip to the police station until they can sort things out and you know what that means.
When I have the need to rent a vehicle, I always get one with a driver.

I lived in Manila for 5 years and still maintain a car in Manila for my frequent trips. In all that time I had a few accidents as happens. Nothing major. But I never encountered the " your foreign so your at fault" mentality as earlier stated. Each time both parties calmly got out, assessed damage, exchanged number and insurance details and went on our way. Same as in any other country.
Driving in Phils is totally normal (assuming you've driven in all other Asian countries). And the added advantage is there are no cameras to catch you. Unlike most countrries. Never ben stopped for brethalyser (and I should have been 100's of times). Just relax and drive same as everyone else.

Gotta be cheaper to rent a car and driver (AKA a Taxi???) Use a Hotel one and you will get a decent Aircon Vehicle with a reasonable driver, less cost less risk, no hassle.

I think it's on Mabini, roughly between LA Cafe and G point. It's worth taking a look, but I would NOT expect too much. When they had dancers they weren't allowed to bar fine, and last time I was there, the dancers had disappeared. There were p4p women inside, but not very good quality.
It might be the kind of place to go for a quiet beer, watch the big screen, play a game of pool...and if you get lucky, you'll see someone of interest.
You would probably be better off hitting Amazon and G Point if you want a LA cafe alternative.

It is about 1/2 block up from Amazonia same side of the street. Basically the same format as Amazonia. Unfortunately, not the same format as Butterfly which used to be right next to Amazonia.

But if you are brave or adventurous enough:
The locals are really bad drivers; they turn left from the right land, right from the left, the stop in the middle of the road for no apparent reason. When they flash their lights at you it generally means get out of their way, regardless of who has the right of way. Directionals are something they use only to fake you out, but frequently these, and brake lights, don’t work anyway. They are great at turning 3 lanes into 5. Traffic signs are confusing, missing, in the wrong place, hidden, and traffic lights often don't work. If a policeman is drecting draffic, it will be a real mess. And watch out for the trucks and buses, the rule of the road is that the larger vehicle wins.
But they generally drive slowly so you can work with all this. Try to keep a sense of humor. In fact, if you are in a hurry, assuming traffic is not bumper to bumper, it can be a bit of a slalom. Be careful on EDSA as from time to time, and with no warning, lanes just end. If you don’t see it coming you might just run into the elevated train pillar.
One of the most frustrating regular occurances is when Filipino drivers fill up the left turn lane (when there is one) then the lane to the right of it and then to the right of that, until the whole road is blocked with people turning from the wrong lane. This also happens with the buses on EDSA. At strategic points along the way they get 3 deep and then when they pull out they block the whole highway, making a real mess.
The biggest risk though is the police. There are several different services so it is hard to know who is pulling you over, and if it happens you probably won’t know why. Sometimes it is making a forbidden turn, though the sign may be absent or hidden behind a tree, or going the wrong way down a one way street, though it looks two way, you were following others in the same direction and in fact it may only be one way during certain hours, which are arbitrarily determined based on how far it is to pay day. Try arguing that it is not marked as one way and they will tell you that anyway everyone knows. Afterwards you may find a faded, well hidden and ambiguous sign. But usually they just want a bribe, which for locals is a hundred pesos or so. For you it is likely to be PHP1, 500 or 2, 000. Sometimes the cop will even have a printed "schedule" of bribes. Just ask if you can pay the fine "now". Alternatively, or if you get an honest cop, they will take your driver’s license. You are supposed to go to the police station to pay the fine and pick it up. This can really mess up your travels if it happens say on a Friday night and they tell you to come get it on the Monday, but your flight is Sunday. It is best to travel with two copies of your license and just abandon one if you have to. Don't try to give them an expired license, they check for this. I have only had this problem in Manila, not out in the provinces.
In fact most trips out of town are quite good. The roads north to Subic or Angels, once off EDSA, are very good and well signed. You should have little problem. Southbound there is a lot of road work and traffic can be a *****. Hi guys, Paid my first return visit to the LA Café yesterday after several months enforced absence in boring old Blighty. As expected the place is still the grungy old dump although the owners appear to have dipped into their deep pockets to install a couple of large LCD screens in the downstairs bar area. Just have to do something drastic about the rest of the shithole now. However guess we don’t go there for the sunny décor do we?
Quite a good selection of Pinay Pussy particularly for a dull Wednesday afternoon. Met a fairly attractive lass who told me an interesting tale which to my eyes yet again illustrates the danger of getting too involved with these lasses. This girl had become involved with a foreign guy who had set her up in a P20T+ condo with a healthy allowance and is coming over to marry her in a couple of months. All legit – she showed me text messages from the poor dupe declaring his undying love and checking on arrangements for the forthcoming nuptials. I asked her why she came to LA Café and her reply was in her own words ‘I’m bored and miss getting fucked’. I guess I had better be circumspect with details (she told me his name, nationality and wedding date) just in case the guy is a member of this forum. Doubt that though. One born every minute.
Needless to say, I gave her what she was looking for and a very nice time we had too. Got a shitload of pix as well but for obvious reasons cannot show any at this time. But it just goes to show the old adage is true ‘you can take the girl out of the bar …..’. GH

Mind you you havent said what kind of quality hotel etc you want so YMMV. The prices I posted are for middle range. For example you ~could~ pay $25/night in Malati, but you get what you pay for. You could also pay $150 and again you get what you pay for.
As a caveat, the prices I listed in Angeles are firm. The reason there are different prices is some bars have a tiered system. But to be honest, the showgirls at 3000php arent really THAT much better than perimeter 1000php girls. Although I think the exception is Doll House-their showgirls are absolutely TOP shelf.

Those prices are accurate- you will get what you pay for. To have two girls for the whole night + food + drinks + lady drinks + hotel + taxis you can spend anywhere from $50-500 per night.
To keep your daily budget below $100, you should stay in a budget hotel in ermita ($20) walk to la cafe (no taxi fare), buy a barrel of sml during happy hour ($8), some appetizers ($12), and take two girls that would rate about a 6-7 for 1000 pesos each long time ($20). That comes to around $80 a night and you are living bare bones. You could even go a little cheaper if you want to go short time, get a cheaper hotel, uglier girls, no beer, etc but you would only get your daily cost down to $50.
Mongering for $200 a night is very easy if you are at EDSA. Barfine for 2 girls would be about 1500 pesos ($35) each + a 1000 peso tip per girl ($20). These girls would be about an 8, and you would need to take them to a slightly nicer hotel which would be in the $50 range. To buy them both a lady drink, split a couple appetizers, and take a taxi back will cost you another $50.
If you want to spend the night with a couple 9's you will need about $500 per night. But you will be living in luxury. Go to burgos st in makati, barfine will be up to 5000 pesos ($100) and then you have to tip the girl another $50. For girls of this caliber, you need to take them to a corresponding hotel or penthouse suite which could cost $200 a night. The good thing about burgos st is that they deduct the lady drinks you buy from the bar fine price at the end of the night.

I am planning a trip to the Philippines and love HOT women. Where should I go the first time? Manilla? City of Angels? CEBU? Somewhere else?
Remember, this is my first time in Philippines and I want good prices, quantity, and ease. Please let me know. Thanks.When I come to the Phils, I usually hit Manila, Angeles City, and Makati as a rule. The best set of bars in the Manila area is the EDSA Entertainment Complex located at EDSA and Roxas Blvd. Inside the building, there are several bars and a fair variety of girls. The barfine is p1000 (I think), and the girls will want p2K to p4K for a tip. Personally, I never negotiate instead just slipping a folded amount of pesos into her purse as she is about to leave, the amount dependent on performance and length of stay.
There are a couple of freelance bars in Ermita that are worth checking out: the infamous L. A. Cafe on M. H. Del Pilar and the other is G-Point located on Padre Faura. I usually give the girls p1, 000 to 1, 500 for all night and p500 to p1, 000 for short time.
Your best bet being it is your first time in the Phils is probably Angeles City which is a 90 minute drive from Manila. From the airport the best way to get there without much planning is to walk into the taxi hut which is located outside arrivals area a bit to the left as you cross the street under the porta-cochere. Just tell them you want to go Angeles. It should cost around p2, 700.
Once you get to A. C. , the most activity is around Kokomos cafe which is on the corner of Fields and A. Santos. Central Park and Swiss Chalet are a couple of good (and cost efficient) hotels in that area. There are perhaps 40 bars in that general area with the barfine being around p1, 300 and the girl's tip from p1, 000 to p2, 000 depending on the circumstance.
You will probably want to spend most of your mongering time in A. C. Because of the sheer number of bars. I usually spend around 10 days there before ending up in Makati. I usually get a private car from Swagman Travel (for about the same price as the taxi ride from the airport) to take me to the bar area on P. Burgos in Makati.
As you have read on this forum, Makati is getting very expensive these days, but there are ways around high prices mainly telling the girls to call you after she gets off of work at 4am or meeting you the next day. The Flamingo group bars (Flamingo, Wild, Wild West, Bandidos, Mogambos, and Rogues) will cost you the least. A night at one of those joints will cost around p7, 000 for drinks, barfine, and tip: not cheap, but it is what it is these days on P. Burgos.

So there I was..... I arrived in Manila from the US last Sunday (tired).
The Swagman hotel had their people pick me up at the airport for free... too bad I did not see the person (I can't tell if it's a he or a she) the first time, I walked around for awhile and finally saw.... that person, and they gave me a ride to the Swagman Hotel. No, it's not a great place to stay, but it's cheap, decent, has a decent location for what I want to do and has free airport pick-ups and drop-offs.
BTW, arriving on Sunday has an advantage.... much less traffic on the roads.... I'm also guessing less people can afford to pay for gas these days anyways, it's about 59 pesos per liter of gas.
After I checked-in and relaxed for awhile; I began to walk to Robinson's mall even though it was raining. A guy on a trike asks if I wanted a ride... then I thought it would probably be worth it since it was raining. I asked how much and he said 30 pesos, I said OK. I had only been in the Philippines a couple hours and didn't have any change.. so yes when I got there and gave him a 50 peso bill... he didn't have any change.. Yeah sure! He emptied his pockets and said look.. You are the first customer today. I wasn't going to argue, especially in the rain over 20 pesos. If he did have change, I'd probably give him an extra 10 pesos anyways. So I spent a couple hours in the mall window shopping, eating and seeing if I saw any suspicious activities. Well I didn't see anything apparent.
I went back to my room and took a nap, then headed off to LA Cafe about... 11Pm ( I think).. yes.. it was raining still.
So I'm walking to the LA Cafe keeping my eyes open for beggars and bums, then a car comes by and follows me, right beside me... I took a really quick glance and thought it was a taxi, so I ignored what they said.. I didn't really understand... then they keep following me, and I looked again, I still thought it was a taxi... they blurted something... and I said "Fuck-Off leave me alone".... then I looked and damn!!! It was a police car with two policemen. I think they didn't hear me though.. So I stopped and went to the car because I figured I didn’t have much of a choice to talk to them. They asked where I was going and I said LA cafe.... the driver said hop in we will give you a ride... then I thought... SHIT!! What should I do? Well, I didn't want to seem afraid so I got in. He said it’s raining and I could get sick and they are here to protect tourists.... yeah.. OK.
So on the way I'm wondering what's really going to happen. He starts talking about how they are hungry, car is almost out of gas, underpaid ect ect... and he said all of the above three times before we got to LA Cafe... well it was obvious he wanted some money... so I said here's 100 Pesos.. is that OK? I know it's a lot for a short ride, but I don't want to be messing with the cops. Then the cop than made it seem like I really didn't have to give them any money at all, like it was 100% voluntary... I guess maybe it was, but I wasn't prepared for that to happen. They were happy with the 100 pesos and said I should use condoms. He said do I want condoms... I said no, I have some thank you. I'm guessing he was going to sell me some.
OK, so the car stops and the door guy at LA Cafe opens the back of the police car to let me out as if this happens all the time ( yes, I guess it does). With several people standing outside, I figured someone would think it was odd that I walked out of the back of a police car into the bar, but no... Nobody thought it was out of the ordinary.
I guess one good thing about the Philippines compared to the US, is in the US I can’t tell the cops yes I am going to pick-up hookers, and they tell me to have fun and ask if I want condoms.
I spend a couple hours there and took a girl back to my room. I noticed the starting prices where about 500 pesos higher than it was a few months ago. Anyways she was cute, and she actually looked like she was a Thai from North Thailand, it was 1500 pesos well spent; it seemed like she wanted more sex than I did.
Well after that I caught the Fly by bus to AC, and found out they raised the fare to 600 pesos. On to AC….

I am glad things worked out for you. I don't trust Filipino security forces. That includes security guards, cops and the military. Most of the scams and crimes in the country are perpetuated or manipulated by these guys....I have learned the hard way in PI if a local approaches offering assistance its best to in a friendly way tell them to fuck off.
I would not get into a cop car or any other car anywhere.
You can politely refuse saying you need to check on something around the block only. Not necessary to tell them where exactly you are going.
PHI police are notoriously corrupt and will not hesitate to planting drugs on you and demanding extortion money. Once you are in their car they are in control, not you.
You are lucky. Manila police are not known for giving good samaritan service.

I agree, there are plenty of decent looking girls in LA Cafe, and the price is lower than the other places in Manila; and I love it when a lot of girls try to get your attention or try their best to sell themselves to you.

Yeah, its not exactly like the infamous Bangkok Thermae in its heyday, but on a rocking night it sure is a characterful joint. Just wish they would improve the ventilation as a couple of hours in there and I passive smoke at least 10 fags and leave the place smelling like an ashtray. Same as X, I have taken to frequenting the place in the mid-afternoon-early evening as it is quieter and you do tend to find the occasional gold nugget amongst the dross. Nothing, though, beat the place late on a Weekend night when its full to overflowing with odd and dodgy characters of both sexes and some in-between:)

I once tried to book flights online and being unsuccessful, visited one of their sales outlets. The queue was enormous and so I approached the assistance counter where I was told that my anticipated wait was 1-2 hours and that I would need travel tax waivers for all the pax (despite the fact that none of the party was travelling on Philippine passports!). I quickly admitted defeat, went home and booked a less convenient route online with a rival budget airline. Their attitude is the typically Pinoy way of you either put up with the discomfort, inconvenience and silly requirements of our business or you are free to fuck off elsewhere. And I imagine so many potential customers do just that.

Know it well GE. Went to the LTA yesterday to renew my Pinoy driving license (why oh why are they valid for only 2 years). Thought right I'm going to disappear into a Philippine bureaucratic muddle for several hours and so wrote off half the day. You could have knocked me over with a feather when the whole business went quite smoothly. They even had a 4 point flow chart plastered large all over the walls and believe it or not, they actually stuck to it despite the usual large crowd of applicants. I was out in not much more than an hour and a half, clutching my new license and with a happy and bemused smile on my face. Shame they had to spoil it by putting me down as a female on the license!! But it shows the state of the place when you are actually suprised when something goes right. You just don't expect it. GH

Dealing with the LTO or any other bureaucracy is the upside of living here, since there's very little that Php1,000 won't do to expedite everything. When it comes time for me to renew the license, I give a couple of thousand pesos to the lady who "fixes" everything in our office and then I get a call a few hours later to come get my picture taken. I'm escorted to the head of the line, and handed my new license in about 15 minutes. I have no idea how the whole thing is really supposed to work, but that's the way I've done it since I arrive. Flawless!

I had this problem too. I think it is only a problem with VISA. I saw it on thier site last year. I asked my bank to also give me a Mastercard just for this purpose.
So last month I tried my VISA and no luck. I tried my new Mastercard with the same bank and it works!!! I bought 3 tickets from them in the last few weeks. But, you have to use a Mastercard.

Whats with these pink lines that seem to have appeared painted on the pavements/sidewalks (where they exists) all over Metro Manila. Noticed them in Las Pinas the other day and noticed the same pink lines in Malate today. Asked a few locals but they don't have a clue either.
I assure you they are there (check the next time you are out) and not the result of one too many SML's!!

They showed me a list of 9/10 things required for the application (employment contract, passport/visa...on and on). I looked the cashier with a straight face and said, "Here, just take my Visa number and charge me each month, like the cell companies do in America". She replied, Sorry Sir, we don't do that here. So to get a loan in terms of business you have 2 choices basically.....go to the bank where for 15% interest per year they want you to provide 2 times the aomunt you are borrowing in collateral. All banks want same.
Or you go to a moneylender where for 30% per annum plus collateral you an borrow what you want.
Not exactly conducive to growing the economy. But as the banks are monopolised by the same few families who monopolise politics they are happy with their licence to print money and keep everyone in their place.

Banks are also into this 'we don't really want your trade, its all too much hassle' business model that is endemic throughout the Philippines. A couple of years ago I tried to open bank accounts at BPI and HSB (a bit shocking for one of the worlds biggies) and neither was able to accommodate me. BPI turned me down direct and HSB put so many bureaucratic hurdles in my way that it just wasn't worth the effort. Now I stress, I didn't want a loan but wanted an account where I would be transferring funds amounting to several million pesos. If I'd been in the west, a bank would have bitten my hand off.
A countries banking system is the veins and arteries of its economic health. I would suggest that in this case the place has terminal coronary thrombosis. GE summed it up a while ago by suggesting that if there was a fourth world category, the Philippines would be definately be tops. GH
I don't disagree with your conclusions, but maybe it is govt' regulation causing the problem rather than the bank. Just a thought.

Yes and what sort of government puts restrictive/protectionist regulations on their banking systems - I am no economist but I imagine the answer is a pretty crap/insecure one. India used to be the same about until about 10 years ago they discovered that a partial deregulation and modernisation of their banking system was the only way ahead for their proposed economic expansion plans. And look at them now. The Philippine banking system is 20 years out of date. Where else can you waste an hour queing to do a simple transaction. Or what about those fucking annoying, constantly offline ATM's (or conversely, as happened to me the other day I withdrew P4000 and got it all in 100's. Nice!!). And have you tried to cash a TC in a Philippine bank recently. No the banking system is like the rest of the place, a fucked up, chaotic mess. GH

After five years of living here, I'm constantly amazed at the indifference of most businesses toward actually responding to consumers and to maximizing profits by providing responsive service. Then I finally realized that the "bottom line" here is not the "bottom line" at all as we understand the term. Rather, it's protecting your business, at all costs, against the possibility of theft. This is why, in a department store, it may take you ten minutes to select your purchase, but 45 minutes to pay for it, since only one person is allowed to handle the money and she will be watched by three other people making sure she doesn't steal the money. It's why you cannot get a monthly cell phone contract until the company has verified, 17 different ways, that you will pay the monthly bills. The risk-reward paradigm here is skewed toward risk aversion. That is, companies take no risks and settle for modest (or no) reward.
Couple the risk-aversion model with draconian, inflexible labor laws that discourage the creation of permanent employment--and knowledgeable employees, and you've got a moribund, unresponsive consumer sector. The only way to get satisfaction here is by knowing "important people" and thus avoiding the red tape. I got a local Visa card here--after two years of fruitless endeavor--only after I became friendly with the president of a very large company in Manila who was the golfing buddy of a very senior executive of a large bank. He made a call and I had the credit card in two days. I have two post-paid, personal cell phone accounts, but only because my company has 150 contracts with SMART and I got to know the account rep. very well.
Since, unlike the US, Europe, Japan and other real countries, there's no way to check credit history here, the automatic assumption is that those applying for credit will not pay. The lack of access to capital, on the part of consumers and most businesses partially explains the lack of a vibrant small business sector. The oligarchs who run the place solely for their own benefit are, of course, quite content with this state of affairs, since it ensures their continued control.
Make no mistake. This is a kleptocracy. Owned and operated by about 3% of the population solely for their aggrandizement and continued enrichment.

Fucking hell GE, don't get me started! Between us we paint a pretty hopeless picture of the Philippine Economy although you have obviously put more thought (and bile) into it. Guess you have been here and put up with the annoying petty bureaucracy longer than me. But appreciate the points you make which are all valid. The fear in business here of losing their ill gotten gains leads to some ridiculous situations. Where else in the world can you see an armed guard protecting a burger bar!! But note that one of the main tasks of that guard is frisking staff as they leave the premises. One of the things that always annoys me is how you are always required to surrender your bags (and brolly!! -why?) on entering any large retail outlet. Its a real pain in the rear. The reputation of the Philippine people thoughout the region is that of a nation of petty thieves and these practices certainly do nothing to allay that stereotype.
Similarly, like all foreigners here, I always had problems with getting decent banking service here. That is until, through a neighbour, I was introduced to an insurance salesman (through whom I insured my house). His wife happened to be the manager of nearby branch of Metrobank. That was it, I was in. She actually came round to my house to bring papers to open my account and everything was set up in super quick time. Now, whenever I visit that branch, I get super efficient, express VIP treatment ahead of the the poor workaday hoi polloi. It is really quite embarrassing. Goes to prove it is not what you know in the Philippines but who you know. Know the right people, life is easy. Otherwise join the long queue, Joe. GH

Cebu Pacific will take credit cards from certain countries. Mattrick you must not have a USA or Canadian credit card. My friend has a China issued credit card and he has no problems. I think they said there was too many stolen credit card numbers from a lot of western countries.

Cebu Pacific will take credit cards from certain countries. Mattrick you must not have a USA or Canadian credit card. My friend has a China issued credit card and he has no problems. I think they said there was too many stolen credit card numbers from a lot of western countries.
Don't think so. I've got a Philippines Visa and I've never gotten Cebu Pacific to accept it or my US Visa. I think it just depends on the time of day, whether the system is working or not, and other factors that contribute to making this one of the least efficient, least productive countries in the world.
Here is a suggestion.
Go online to visa verified or mastercard secured site.
Check and see if the bank who issued your card is there..
If they are sign up- it is free.
You need to put an password there.
So when you try to use the card , a screen will come on asking for your password.
Once you put the password it should go through.
Not many american banks participate in visa verified or mastercard secured.
I have a capital one card which participates. I have no problem using that
Card in asia.

Talaga ! Right on the money ! Life here is about who you know. I have been here just under a year. My friend introduced me to a friend of a friend who happens to be a president of a bank, got my bank account and Visa within a couple of days. No other references required. Damm it i even put in some thing like US 500 to get the account running. ( my business funds are offshore). The bank manager personally filled my forms in my house and I never have to queue again at the bank. Also, I never have to queue at the airport , whizz in&out customs & imigration, never have to bother about colour coding, have some of the hottest girls (from the entertainment world/models/etc) delivered to me, introduced and have automatic VIP treatment at the likes of Pegasus, AEN, Airforce One, etc...including some private clubs that you can only dream about - I dont pay retail either, my X5 comes with a 5% discount coz my lawyer knows "the guy". Even my rented digs in Forbes Park is at some stupid low rental rate coz a friend of a friend of a friend vouched for me.
Yeah man, life is great if you know the the right friend. Better still make sure he knows other right friends.

Like Michael, GH and lots of other foreigners who have lived here for a while, I now know lots and lots of people, mainly through business, and I use these contacts shamelessly to avoid the day-to-day hassles of living here. I don't wait in line at the bank; I don't walk around town paying my monthly bills and waiting in endless queues, etc. In fact, I probably live a lot like the "elite" (absent any political power) who run this place. I've found though that you cannot insulate yourself entirely from some of the insanity of living here. Sooner or later, for example, you're going to have to walk into a store to purchase something and then the fun begins all over again.

The best or was it the worst day was when doing a work permit renewal some years back ( maybe they dont do this any more ) had to do the NBI clearance thing.
The line was so damned long.. must have been a thousand in it.. but of course me being Mr Whitey, I was with my NBI "friend".. straight to the front of the line, sat in an air conditioned office while things were done, then out again. Felt good but couldnt help a moments feeling bad seeing all those poor guys knowing they were in line for at least next 6 hours.

Looks like were all saying the same thing about banking here.
My MO is to walk into the bank, find the manager who knows me ( even tho I only visit once a month), sit down and chat about nothing much with him..but as soon as Ive sat down.. a cashier will come and take care of whatever it is I need doing. No queues.. no "Sir fill this in and that from too".. Oh no.. I sit and it gets done.
But it proves that all us whiteys get well treated in banks, as long as we know someone. God help the "unconnected"
Yes and what sort of government puts restrictive/protectionist regulations on their banking systems - I am no economist but I imagine the answer is a pretty crap/insecure one. India used to be the same about until about 10 years ago they discovered that a partial deregulation and modernisation of their banking system was the only way ahead for their proposed economic expansion plans. And look at them now. The Philippine banking system is 20 years out of date. Where else can you waste an hour queing to do a simple transaction. Or what about those fucking annoying, constantly offline ATM's (or conversely, as happened to me the other day I withdrew P4000 and got it all in 100's. Nice!!). And have you tried to cash a TC in a Philippine bank recently. No the banking system is like the rest of the place, a fucked up, chaotic mess. GH
Well, if you lent a Filipino some money that lived in the Philippines... would you expect to get you money paid back montly and on time?
Just imagine all the poor Filipinos going to the bank and getting loans... the Banks would be broke pretty quick.
I do agree that the banking system and other systems suck.
I also hate it when I go to a store and the saleperson has no clue about a product. Or you ask for help, and instead of trying to figure out a solution, they will be quick to say it can't be done.

No No No, like Mattrick has agreed. A VISA credit card from the US or Canada will not work. I tried my VISA card and Debit card, it would not work. SO my Canadian friend tried to pay with his Candian VISA credit Card. It would not work either. Use a MASTERCARD and it will work. I bought many tickets online from Cebu Pacific lately. I have to use my MASTERCARD to pay.
My MASTERCARD AND VISA card are from the same bank.
It does not matter if you have verified by VISA or MASTERCARD.
I think someone else got me wrong thinking I was talking about an immigration VISA.
I have had my VISA Credit card for many years and I asked my bank for a MASTERCARD just so I could pay for Cebu Pacific online. It works.

I tried bookiing a roundtrip from San Fran to Manila on PAL and neither my Mastercard nor Visa (from different banks) worked. Again, I called them and they said some problem with authentication, etc. And that if I called the agent they could give me the internet rate online, but they'd have to email me some form to sign and send to them. Jesus. How f'n inconvenient!
Anyone else shed more light on this? I thought it was just Cebu Pacific that was having issues.

I have not had any success in the past 3 years trying to purchase my ticket on-line from Cebu Pacific. I just call Cebu Pacific Airlines and give them the information by phone. But before I did that I called my credit card company and told them that I was going to make the purchase. I have had success doing it that way. They will email the tickets. Just call when it's early in the morning in the Philippiines and you should not have to wait. You can not do that with PAL but they will hold your ticket for an extended period of time so you can pay for it when you arrive in the Philippines.
I used to think it was the Canadian and US banks cracking down on overseas fraud, but I do not think so. I have never had any prblem buying a ticket on-line from SeaAir, it works everytime

ThanksThis is true, you have to call their office, which is in Los Angeles, and they will email/fax you a credit card form. If you are firm with them they will give you the web rate over the phone. Here is the number:

I can buy nothing from the USA with my Wells Fargo Visa because of the screwed up verified by Visa system. That includes attempts from Cebu Pacific site and lots of hotels I have tried. I finally found a guy that will buy the tickets if you pay up front via PayPal. He charges 10% and follows up with you. At least he has with me.

Yesterday I called the Cebu Pacific call center to book a flight. I gave them the credit card details of a UK bank card I hold. They checked and then said it failed authentication. Then came an interesting question. Do you have a card of a UK bank that has branches in the Philippines? I did, and gave them that UK bank credit detail and it passed their authentication. So looks like Cebu Pacific have links into foreign bank branches in the Philippines for authentication of those banks' offshore cards.

Ok, so I called PAL again today and my failed try yesterday had fare ramifications. The damn fare went up! Pissed me off! So, they did say they would email me a sheet on which I had to fill out my credit card (Mastercard info) information, cost, etc. And then I had to also photocopy my driver's license and both sides of the credit card and fax it to them. (yeah, that's really secure. Hahahaha.).
Anyway, I did get the flight booked and they gave me the new and revised more expensive fare on the web. I gave them a piece of my mind. (not bein able to book with my Visa or my Mastercard. Not giving me the fare I had tried to book the first time. And then they also informed me since it was a "special web fare" or some such stupid thing that I would receive no rewards mile whatsoever.
I f'n should have flown Northwest. I coulda booked online. Sure, would have had a two hour layover in Tokyo, but would have received frequent flyer miles and the fare would have been about $75 dollars more.
I told them this policy of theirs would hurt theri business.
Maybe we should all make sure it does. Until they correct it.
