I will be in Manila for the first time in two weeks. How does one dress in PI in order to not appear like a tourist?

Actually I dont want to trivialise this as dress is a purely personal factor and some guys have lots of luck regardless of how they dress.

Having said that .....
-Conventional tourist or monger "uniform" is tank top, singlet or baggy, faded Tee Shirt.
-Baggy knee length (or longer) shorts; sometimes jeans.
-Sandals or flip flops (thongs).
-Most often topped off with a baseball cap.

But.... you will increase your chances of
- getting a non-scammer taxi driver
- have mall girls smile at you and chat with you
- do very well in most bars

if you dress neatly, look clean, smell good. I actually always wear shoes of some variety (Gym shoes or dress shoes or soft casual shoes) and never go for the sandals/flip flop look, and I wear a non-faded Tee or casual shirt with a collar. Jeans are OK on most occasions.

If it's any consolation to those of us who deplore the way some of our brethren dress, I just returned from Singapore. I was surprised to find a plethora of foreign guys who also dressed like panhandlers. I suppose it doesn't matter if you're in a wealthy country or a poor one. Some guys just can't resist the:"I'm down on my luck and can't afford clean clothes or a razor" look. I guess they're making a fashion statement in reverse.

This was my very first trip to Philippines. The information I found on this forum was very useful, thanks everyone.

Arrived at Ninoy Aquino international airport. I was surprised by tight security at the airport, but didn't mind. Went to ask where I can find shuttle bus going to my hotel, they asked me to wait couple of minutes. Then a guy appeared, took my luggage and walked toward silver 4-door Toyota, and put my luggage in the trunk. I asked if this is the shuttle, he replied - yes, it is. Hmm … how much, I asked. 500 peso – the guy replied. This was my first time in Manila, but I knew my hotel was only couple of km away from the airport. 500 peso sounded high. The car did not look like a hotel shuttle, so I asked the guy to take my luggage out from the trunk and give it back to me. He did, and now he changed the story that the ride will be free, etc. Right. I headed towards what looked like a legit taxi stand.

Taxi driver took me “sightseeing”, it took about 45 minutes to drive 4 km. During the trip, he offered to take me to Batangas City where I can take a ferry to Puerto Galera, where I was heading couple of days later. He mentioned that he has a “neighbor”, 19 yo girl who is looking for a boyfriend, and who would be very glad to meet me. Took down his phone number, but had no intention to call him. Ride was around 200 php, he did have a meter.

Friend of mine recommended Greenbelt shopping mall as a place to start, so that's where I headed first after settling in the hotel. It seemed like a good place to meet freebies, I chatted with a couple of girls in the mall. I checked out Havana and Starbucks, many locals but I spotted couple of pros too but did not make contact. Best time to be seems to be in the evening, starting 6-7 PM, after offices close. Girls often hang out after work and some of them are approachable. Unfortunately, there is a lot of ladyboys in the area. I spotted what I thought was two cuties, walked by and smiled, they both immediately got up, one of them said “I want you inside of me”, and they both followed me. What happened to foreplay? Security guard appeared out of nowhere seconds later, so they backed off. I must say I was turned off by this, and decided to head to Amazonia.

Took a taxi from New Makati to Manila, it's about half an hour ride between Greenbelt and Amazonia. Asked the driver to take me to City State Tower hotel, which according to information I found on this forum, is just around the corner from Amazonia. I found Amazonia very easily, it is about two minutes walk from the hotel. Walked in and immediately liked it. Lot of girls, couple of stunners, making eye contact, etc. Sat down, ordered a beer. I was immediately approached by a girl, started a conversation but she was all business and the vibe was not good. I politely thanked her and said that I want to look around little more. She did not like that at all, oh well. Two other girls approached me, one of them very chatty, the other one quiet but really hot. I started talking to the chatty one, I told her it was my first time here, so she explained how things work: hotel upstairs, pricing, etc. What I found unusual was that while I was talking to her, other girls would approach me and ask if I want their company. She didn't mind and explained that this is how it works here. This would never happen in Hong Kong, I found it strange, but nobody seemed to mind. Spent about half an hour talking to her, ordered another drink. I was not yet ready to head upstairs, but wanted to “compensate” her for the time she spent with me. Left her ~800 peso which was the change I got after I bought the beer. I know – I didn't have to do it, etc. But I felt compelled to leave some money. I walked around in the neighborhood before and saw people living on the streets with kids, etc. I'm sure she wouldn't be there if she didn't have to.

I think it was 10 PM when band started playing. Not as good as I expected, we have a lot of of decent Philippino bands in Wan Chai in Hong Kong. Took my beer and walked around. Met Cindy, early 30-s, curly hair, really fun to talk to, we hit it off immediately. It didn't take her long to convince me to head upstairs. Which we did. Paid 400 peso (if I remember correctly) for the hotel, which from what I understand, is all night long deal.

BBBJ in the shower, and off to bed, turns out she was quite an acrobat, splits being one the tricks she was willing to perform. OK performance, somewhat routine, but she was fun to chat with. Told me about her Japanese ex-boyfriend and tattoos she wanted to get. She did mention that she is working to pay off the house she bought couple of years ago. Her son is 2 years old and stays with her parents while she is making money in Manila. Paid her 1000 peso and left two hours later, I was tired and wanted to rest before my trip to Puerto Galera.

Manila was just a short stop on my way to Puerto Galera, which I will describe in the next post. I wish I had more time to check out the other places mentioned on the board. Next time.

Well having met you my evil twin I can vouch that you dont look as gwapo as me so it is best you smell as good :D I trust she means smell all over given the amount of time she spends on her knees face buried in your scrotum and ass :D

But it does surprise me that many guys dont make an effort in that department....maybe they think as they are western the girls will fancy them regardless as they look like Brad Pitt (they dont...I do :)), maybe they are older than RK (well he is older than us) and therefore the use of "smellies" was not encouraged when they were younger (my late father always considered after shave etc "for a bunch of poofs"...until my late mother bought him some), who knows.

But surely we can all spend a little bit of time in the grooming stakes....I know I can be a slob at times but I do smell nice also and scrub up well when I need to.

I don't know RK, may be i'm Indian they take me for an easy ride...i always always had trouble with manila taxi driver's never in Cebu.

One time, i had came close to a first fight at night and luckily it was in front of my condo and the security came to my rescue. I had asked the guy to switch on the meter and he did but half way down the road..he switched it off and said meter is not working and when i gave 500 peso from a ride from malate to mandaluong..he said thanks and no change...usually its 200.

Not many may have experienced this switching on and off of meter...but for me every fourth ride is wax on wax off kinda deal :)

I'm non-confrontational guy...but with taxi drivers i always have to raise my voice...i have lived for more than a year in Manila.and most of the time, i had a bad experience. I understand that 200 to 300 pesos is no biggie..but there is a thing called respect...I should give them the tip...BUT they ASSUME that whatever i give is for their taking :)

My recollection is that if you come from the States, you don't need a round-trip. Even if you do, purchase a cheap one on the spot but you can return it later minus a small fee.

Its not a problem..as long as you have onward journey ticket. Buy a cheap ticket on cebu pacific from manila to macau or to kota kinabalu less than 700 pesos and throw it away...good luck

Arrival Visa conditions include a return ticket out of the country. While some countries have the right to demand a ticket back to the COO (Country of Origin). You can always get away with it as long as it is a ticket out of the country. And worse case. It is actually none of the immigration's business as long as you have proof that you plan to leave.

Try not to land there without a ticket to somewhere, as that is a clear violation of the conditions of tourist visa, and while some immigration officers may let you buy a ticket, most have a valid excuse to deport you or send you A-to-A on the same carrier you arrived. Scary. A hundred dollar plus can save a lot of hassle.

As suggested, pick a one way MNL/CRK. SIN: with the Air Phil Express, Cebu Pac and Tiger flights, you are bound to get a good LCC fare. Approx about 120 US at the most. Or check MNL-KL on AK/Cebu Pac.

Not to dispute SC, but a ticket to KK maybe an obvious case for BI to ask what the heck you are doing by going to KK, then again that is just an excuse from BI to collect some 'taxes'

If you are a repeat visitor with multiple entries and exits they will not look hard at a return ticket. If you are on your first visit or you have a new passport they will probably ask.

I have one friend who modified a E-ticket to match his dates...no questions asked.

I had two newbie's with me and they went through first and both were asked for return tickets and I wasn't asked anything.

Both Cathay Pacific and Cebu Pacific are very strict about return tickets. Couple of times they printed a copy for me because they said immigration will ask for it. Immigration never asked me for the copy of the return ticket. It is mostly the airlines who are enforcing it.
I do not believe they will let you board the flight on one way ticket.

Airlines will generally refuse to transport foreign travelers on international routes from one country to another because they don’t want to be responsible for you and possibly lose money. If a visitor gets stranded and cannot purchase a ticket to leave any foreign country, the airline that took you there on a one-way ticket would be responsible for returning you to your original point.

The passenger with a refused entry stamped has to be flown back by the carrier that got him or her to the port of entry. Regardless of the price, that really affects carriers when. Like in Singapore, about 20 passengers get refused entry on arrival. (though for different reasons other than having a return) but the carrier has to ship them back to Point of origin or endore the ticket to another carrier and loose the money. And for those who cry saying the carrier has no right to check for valid visa- same story goes as above. For countriest that need prior visa, if somebody arrives minus the visa, the carrier has to fly the guy back.

Those guys who say they have never been asked for their onward journey ticket at checking in are just lucky as it is required of airlines. You are running a risk of it costing you money especially if you have to scramble around to buy a ticket out before you can be checked in. You are obliged to have one if asked for it. I am always asked for it (5 times each year) when I catch a flight from anywhere back to the Phils and I just show them my Permanent Visa ICR card h of course allows me to travel without a ticket.
I would suggest to get an open return ticket when you book.

Went to Amazonia last night and was surprised at the number of people there. I was mobbed by girl after girl asking to go with me but none really caught my eye. One latched on to me and did not want to leave so I finally paid my bill and went to fka LA Cafe. Headed upstairs to hear the band. At around 11PM I would say about 25% Asian (not that I have a problem with that a lot of my friends are Asian) and the rest was a mix of different nationalities. Entrance is 100 pesos but inside they didn't seem to have any of the (rather stupid) rules of LA/Manila Bay Cafe and the quality of girls was definitely higher, ranging from 7 to 8, whereas for quite a while now in LA Cafe, even before it closed, I would rate an average of 5 to 6 with the occasional 7. However, Socialiasta is rather small, I don't think it can take over from LA/Manila Bay cafe. That street, Remedios street, is also very alive with quantities of tables set on the street itself, with cheap food and drink, so I am sure you can pick up loads of girls just straight from the the street traffic.

You are correct. Outside of the 'accepted-countries' list (europe/canada), the vast majority of people will have a hard time obtaining a travel visa to the US for just the reasons stated above. I usually don't get involved in debates on this board and don't want to get involved in this one either but I do have an opinion. I have been part of this forum for several years and have met a few people from this board and they know that I am neither cheap nor confrontational.

I like to carry a lot of cash for some reason--maybe a security blanket of sorts. It is very rare that I have less than the equivalent of 40,000 pesos in pesos and US$. Call me foolish or whatever but I don't go into areas where I feel I am in jeopardy of being robbed. I have a driver who takes me everywhere and usually drops me at the door and I don't go to Malate or even Edsa Complex very often.

If I go out, I usually go to Burgos where I feel safe from being robbed. I'll usually take a taxi back and only get one from MGE, Davis or Basic.

Anyways, my point is that I have the money to spend and can afford to tip but I tend to agree with Mr. E. If you agree on a price, why should you have to pay more? If she wanted the 100 peso tip, she should have asked for 600 first. BTW, 100 pesos isn't 75 cents, it's about $2.25.

Would I give it to the girl if she asked? Probably. But, do I see it as wrong to not give it? I don't. You are paying what you agreed to. Mr. E also pointed out that it was 40% of the price which to me, makes a difference. If you had a 500 peso meal, would you tip 200? I probably wouldn't even tip 50 (since a 10% service charge is already included). When dealing in business, you would never agree to a 40% or even a 20% increase after a price was agreed.

In many countries local people do not tip. Tipping is purely a American thing if I may say so. Even in Europe people do not tip. Ofcourse many add gratuity into the bill.

In March I arrived in the Philippines for three weeks I was visiting the country for the first time and my under(the)cover mission would include stays in Manila, Angeles and Cebu. I was interested to see how Philippines would compare to Thailand, where I have been five times.

I slept for four hours to fight off jetlag and then mid-afternoon headed out in to Manila for the first time. Blistering heat - check, heavy traffic - check, dangerous pavements - check, welcome to Asia!

ROBINSONS MALL is just a five minute walk from Amazonia Hotel and has a reputation as a place to pick up girls. The FRENCH BAKER is presumably 'talked about' because it's near one of the entrances and there are three tables outside, surrounded by stools. This means it's easy for a girl to join you and start a conversation without looking like a hooker. I sat down at one of those tables and ate lunch while surveying the scene. There were some pretty girls for sure, dressed elegantly and sat on stools at the side, waiting to be called over to join customers by an old mamasan-type figure. When the girls were called over, the process resembled a job interview, very formal and serious. I watched for 20 minutes and got very little eye contact, the girls focusing their attention instead on the wealthier Asian businessmen.

Much better was the area where a band was playing. Girls danced sexily and there was a lively atmosphere. I sat on a stool and pretended to watch the band while eyeing the talent. There weren't as many girls as downstairs but there was a higher proportion of hotties. The time was 11pm and the hunt was on.

I spotted a girl in a green dress and silver high-heels. Either way, I decided it was time to leave. I had been to all of the bars except Casino and had got a good flavour for the place.

EDSA did have some good points. The themes were great and none of the girls were old, overweight or ladyboys, like Nana. It was difficult to differentiate between the bars as most had a similar number of girls, of a similar age and quality - even drinks cost the same (110 pesos for a San Miguel Light)! In my opinion though, Bullets and Arrows was head and shoulders above the rest in terms of atmosphere and quality of girls.

I jumped in to a taxi and headed back to Ermita and LA CAFE. I walked in at 1am and there were slimmer pickings on the ground floor so I went upstairs. Great report Sir lancealot...yeah..1600bar fine and 2500 for the girl is the standard price in EDSA in all bars. its mostly geared towards Japanese clients who take girls in bus loads when they come in groups.

WOW! That is a lot to try and ask for in a single question. Since you seem to have been around the board a while, I would suggest grabbing a beer and spending a few minutes reading a little of what those that have come before you reported about different locales.
Personally, I would concentrate on the Angeles City (A.C.) area for my first visit, unless you have a specific reason to stay in Manila.
There are a lot of other places to have fun, but it depends on your "itinerary".
I suspect that with a little notice you will find numerous wingman opportunities, as far as the ease of scoring girls.......that too depends.....do you find breathing a simple task?

ThanksWhen I visited Philippines earlier this year (see report below), it was my first trip too. Like you, I researched on this site (whorist.com is also an excellent resource) and like you I had a sense of trepidation, stepping in to the unknown.

But you've got nothing to worry about. In terms of security, I experienced no problems in Manila at all. Apart from one scam in which a bar tried unsuccessfully to charge me for female company (a smile goes a long way to settling 'misunderstandings' in Asia). I didn't feel threatened walking the streets at night but I think you still need to be vigilant. Try and stay in a hotel close to the 'action area' and never carry more money than you would be willing to lose. Keep your 'girl money' in a separate pocket from your beer money (no point advertising how much you've got on you every time you order a San Miguel). Also make sure you lock your valuables away in your safe when you take a girl back to your room. I've never had any problems but there's no point inviting trouble.

In terms of where to go for a beginner, I would recommend Angeles as your main priority as it truly is 'gogo capital of the world'. It's cheap and there are thousands of gorgeous girls. Manila's gogo's are expensive as they are geared for Asian businessmen, but LA Cafe. Which I believe has reopened as Manila Bay Cafe (same location). Is a fantastic place to pick up girls. Just go for a few beers, a game of pool and watch the band and let the night unwind. There are some real honeys in there for sure. I am now in The Phillipines and just got back from my trip from Zamboanga and Cebu, well, I am pretty tired to post the trip report to either forums but as I am now in Mnaila, I just posted here as well to save time.

Nothing special in zamboanga except I heard there is some out calls services over there.

I'd like to know out of these 2 places Cebu and Puerto Galeria, which one has the nice beaches, nice tourism set up, as well as the nice gogo scene? I'm interested in the tourism/whorism mix scene, as you quote in your response to me. Also where are the ideal locations/hotels to stay at at these 2 places that is close to the action? As previously advised I already booked for 3 nights in AC, followed by 4 nights in Boracay, and 1 night in Manila, but now am worried that there won't be any excitement in Boracay for me, would you or fellow members advise me if I should alter my itenery, and head to Cebu or puerto Galeria also, instead of 4 nights in Boracay? But all in all Sir Lancelot your help and info has been great.

I didn't feel threatened walking the streets at night but I think you still need to be vigilant. Try and stay in a hotel close to the 'action area' and never carry more money than you would be willing to lose. Keep your 'girl money' in a separate pocket from your beer money (no point advertising how much you've got on you every time you order a San Miguel). Also make sure you lock your valuables away in your safe when you take a girl back to your room. I've never had any problems but there's no point inviting trouble.

In terms of where to go for a beginner, I would recommend Angeles as your main priority as it truly is 'gogo capital of the world'. It's cheap and there are thousands of gorgeous girls. Manila's gogo's are expensive as they are geared for Asian businessmen, but LA Cafe. Which I believe has reopened as Manila Bay Cafe (same location). Is a fantastic place to pick up girls. Just go for a few beers, a game of pool and watch the band and let the night unwind. There are some real honeys in there for sure. Both girls pictured below might be found in there as they were regulars before it closed.

If you like to dilute your whorism with a bit of tourism, Puerto Galera is a few hours from Manila and has a neat little gogo scene, while Cebu (nr Chocolate Hills) has some excellent gogo bars too.

But you've got nothing to worry about. In terms of security, I experienced no problems in Manila at all. I was just in Manila for a short four day stay. Between the strength of the peso and inflation in general I am starting to find that Manila is no longer that cheap of a city, decent food and drink are approaching Hong Kong prices in places like Rockwell and Greenbelt.

I stayed on Burgos as is my habit. On my first night after checking in a started to hit some of the bars to say hi to some girls I know and start collecting a few numbers. First stop was WowWowWow where I found out with the exception of one girl everyone including the mama and waitstaff are new in the last two months. Was not overly impressed but there was a somewhat cute 19 year-old so I paid 1500 pesos to the bar to have the curtains drawn and popped my cherry for this trip. Paid the girl 1500 pesos and finished my beer and left.

Went to a few other bars including Tickles which was packed with girls, of which some were good looking, and Hollywood. It was funny when I got into Hollywood as there were these three guys in their early twenties who had been sitting in the row behind me on the plane on the way over talking about how excited they were to be going to the philippines and the hell they were going to raise. In the bar they were being totally outclassed and taken by the girls and they looked shocked to see me. Bought a drink for a regular and told her to have the girls take it easy on the young lads or they'd not have any money left for the rest of their trip with the way they were going through drinks.

From here I hoped into a cab to EDSA as I was not going to pay any of the crazy 4000 peso bar fines that most places on Burgos want and the sweetie who was supposed to pick me up on the airport and be my entertainment for the night did not show, although she was kind enough to have sent me a text so I was not looking for her at the airport. I have to say EDSA seemed to have much nicer looking girls than Burgos this trip and the prices are much more reasonable. Starting to be more westerners there and not just japanese and korean. Picked out a 20 year old girl from Cotton Club I had been with before. 1600 for the bar and I gave the girl 3000 when she left at noon the next day.

Had lunch with the girl who was supposed to meet me at the airport and a few rounds with her back at the hotel until about 6 when she had to head off to one of the Burgos bars to work. Dinner with friends, more bar hopping on Burgos and ended up in Edsa again. Lined up some entertainment for the next afternoon and then back to Burgos where I bar fined some 22 year old out of flamingos. I think her name was Sophia but she was only so-so. Bar got 2,200 and Sophia got 2,000 for spending the night with me. While it was three pops when she was leaving late the next morning she mentioned that she had not performed as well as she normally would and said I likely no longer wanted her number. She was right about that but I have to say she was professional in asking for a lower tip because of her only acceptable performance.

Met up with the 24 year old girl from Edsa I met last night for lunch and some fun in the hotel in the afternoon until she had to go to the bar for work for which I gave her 2000. Dinner with friends ran late and I did not feel like bar hopping so I bar fined the 20 year old girl from Cotton Club again. Spent the night until noon and I gave her 3000 for her efforts. Here's what I love about these girls she tells me it is getting annoying that I am bar fining her and it is costing her money as she gets nothing from the bar fine but has to pay mommy, the lady boy (make-up), medical and the bag lady out of her tip and will I please just meet her outside of work and save her all these expenses that barfining her entails. (For the uninformed Burgos girls get some of their bar fine, EDSA girls do not).

After she left I met up with the girl from the previous afternoon for lunch. After which we explored part of the city I had never been to before and then went back to the hotel until she had to go to work. Again I gave her 2,000 peso.

Had some dinner. Popped into WowWowWow as the the only girl I knew there from before said she would be at work today. As it was still happy hour I paid 750 pesos for the curtains to close and 1500 for the girl. Then went to a different bar to set up the next afternoon and my final there. Wanted to make sure the girl who was supposed to meet me at the airport was going to meet me before I left and take me to the airport.

After hitting a number of bars found myself drawn to EDSA again. Bar fined a hot 18 year old from Bullets called Annette. Turned out to be a huge mistake. While she was hot in the bar, she was knew to the game so very inexperienced and found out back in the hotel that she had a kid, something I normally ask about but had forgotten to. Her tits were terrible. Before we got to the hotel she wanted to eat, so we did that, then she wanted to bar hop as she had never been on Burgos before and was curious what it was like. I put up with that for a while and then we went to the hotel. She was so inexperienced she did not know what to do. Put it simply a decided after our first round I would rather be alone than with her so I told her she could go. She wanted the sun and the moon for payment and while she left with 3000 for her short time she was unhappy. I was so glad when she was gone. I could have saved myself some aggrevation by being more of the jerk with her but it just was not worth the effort.

A somewhat unusual trip for me in that I bar fined girls on each night, which normally I do not do but in general I had loads of fun. The Cotton Club girl seems to think she is my girl friend now and that I should support her to stay in Manila or go back to the province, to only come to Manila when I am there, so she does not need to work in the bar. Not sure where she got that idea but I let her know that it is not going to happen. The girl who picks me up and drops me off knows the score and has no illusions but this other girl was starting to go a little crazy on me.

After reading this long report besides some pricing information about the only other piece of information to pick up on is EDSA seems better than Burgos for the momment.

Just a note to you RH (and other guys too) that some of the owner/managers read this ISG site. For example, I know the owner of Cotton Club does. It seems from your post that you actually paid barfines each time so you reported only what she said to you but.......for those of you who organise sneak-outs with the girls it is best not to boast about it on here or give too many details or you will get the girl into trouble if not get her fired. It is not too difficult for these owners to put 2 and 2 together.
Good on you if you can pull sneak-outs but better to keep details to a minimum.

ThanksI'm happy to help but I think that maybe asking all of these questions in the Manila section might possibly annoy some people.

Here's some answers to your questions but you can read more in the individual forums (in which I will post the latest updates from my diaries which will hopefully help you too).

1. The action area in Cebu is on Gen Maxilom Avenue, opposite Iglesia ni Cristo church. In which case, Beverley Boutique is the hotel for you (formerly Eddies) as it's just a one minute walk away. Details in my report (which I'll probably post over the weekend).

2. Borocay has very little action but girls can be found. To be honest, I didn't look too hard (having a break from girls when I went there) but I went to Cocomangas bar a few nights and found it very easy to talk to girls.

3. Puerto Galera - I will post my report later for this. Stay in Sabang and don't worry about which hotel - it's such a small place they're all in walking distance of the gogo bars. It's only a small 'scene' (i.e 6 bars I think) but I thought the quality of girls in Sabang's gogo bars was quite impressive.

4. In terms of getting the whorism/tourism mix - Puerto Galera has a small scene but is good for diving/boat trips, Cebu has a bigger (more exciting) scene, some beaches and is close to Chocolate Hills, whereas Borocay is pretty much just a nice beach and a few discos. Angeles on the other hand, is an out-and-out whorism destination.

here is the latest from my diary. i posted days 3 to 5 in the angeles section but after my accident (!) i returned to manila. i'm aware that not all of this part of the diary is in manila but there isn't a puerto galera section on this forum and i thought the info might be of use to those who plan to stay in manila and might be interested in a diversion from the big city (puerto galera is just a short trip away).

day 6: manila

sadly, it didn't feel any better, it had swollen up - and not the kind of swelling i had planned on this trip. i considered going to the hospital but decided against it because, after all, it was just a bruise. surely it would disappear in a few days?

i decided another plan of action was needed. on a spur-of-the-moment, i checked out of the hotel and jumped on to a bus bound for manila (p120). i decided that angeles was no place for a man with a groin injury (too much frustration) so i might as well go somewhere nice for a few days. my choice of destination was puerto galera, in north mindoro. by all accounts it is a pleasant place with a small girlie scene. it sounded the ideal place to relax and recuperate.

the journey back to manila took just 90 minutes but i decided that i didn't have the energy to head on to puerto galera that same day. i couldn't face another bus-ride and ferry journey, so instead got a taxi from the bus terminal back to amazonia hotel in ermita. the staff recognised me and i got room 101 again. i cursed to myself. i was really enjoying angeles but now i was back in the pollution and noise of manila - all due to a freak injury.

i didn't want my time to go to waste, so planned to explore some of manila's other hotspots, albeit in observational mode only. as the day wore on though, i felt discomfort walking around, so opted to stick near my hotel. ingeniously, i eased the pain by using an empty toilet roll as a protective shield. on the down side though, it made it look like i had a permanent stiffy wherever i walked. :)

since this was my third night staying at amazonia, i decided that the time had come to visit their bar downstairs. it had a sign outside saying 'wanted: waitresses with pleasing personality' which made me laugh. it was nice inside and a good rock band was playing, but there were few girls and even fewer customers. la cafe, a short distance away, would be very busy by 8pm. i ordered pizza and was joined by a lively young girl called pauletta. she was just 4 foot 9, had waist length hair and a bubbly personality, making me high-five her whenever i made her laugh. she struck me as the type who would be a devil in the bedroom - but alas, i was definitely on a night off from pay-for-play. she sat on my lap and painfully i felt myself getting hard, so i decided that it was time to leave. i couldn't afford any temptation.

hindsight is a wonderful thing but if i wanted to choose somewhere where my dick wouldn't be teased, la cafe wasn't the cleverest of choices! i had a few beers downstairs, where again there were plenty of cuties, and then went upstairs to watch the band. a pretty girl kept smiling at me from a table nearby, so i couldn't resist walking over to introduce myself. her name was stella, a petite girl with a short sixties-style haircut that made her stand out from the crowd. i bought her a drink and chatted with her (and her cute friends) for about an hour. i told her truthfully that i would love to go with her but i couldn't that night, describing my unfortunate injury. in case she had any doubts about my story, i took her hand and placed it on my toilet roll protective cover, which made her laugh. i really liked this girl so i took her phone number and promised to call her later in my trip.

i decided to head back to my hotel at about midnight. on the short walk back i heard a familiar voice calling my name. it was pauletta, the girl i met in amazonia earlier that night, looking upset. she told me that her flatmate had gone with a customer but had taken the keys for her flat and she couldn't get in touch with her. "can i stay with you please?" she asked with big sad eyes. i weighed up the situation and decided that it was probably just a clever ploy to get herself a customer. perhaps if i was in full working order her tactics might have worked, but i told her that i couldn't.

apologising, i walked away and within ten minutes was in bed. as i reached over to switch off the bedside lamp, my phone rang. it was reception telling me that i had a visitor. i put on some clothes and walked out to see pauletta sitting there, looking sad. at first i felt annoyed that she had followed me but then i realised that she knew that there wasn't any money in it for her (i had told her so), so she obviously only needed a place to sleep. my valuables were locked away in the safe so i agreed. she was very grateful and gave me a nice goodnight kiss once we were in bed. it was torture falling asleep next to her sexy young body, knowing i wasn't in a state to fully capitalise.

i might have been out of action but i was satisfied with my nights work. i had got stella's phone number, an excellent potential 'meet' for later in the trip, and fell asleep next to another girl. furthermore, my 'good samaritan' act in housing the homeless would surely result in some good karma heading my way soon... hopefully for the bruising to magically disappear by the morning ;).


day 7: puerto galera

alas, the bruising hadn't disappeared, it still felt sore. pauletta was sleeping with her back to me and i watched her for a while. i imagined hugging up to her from behind, stroking her tits and... ouch. i made a mental note not to think any more sexy thoughts until the bruising had gone. admittedly that's not the most realistic aim in the philippines!

so i definitely wasn't ready to rumble. it was a shame, pauletta probably felt indebted to me for allowing her a place to sleep so i might have picked up a freebie. she left early but i made sure that i got her mobile number first. she seemed a likely candidate for a daytime liaison later in the trip. i might have been out of action but at least things were still happening.

my plan was to sleep until 11am but i was interrupted when my phone rang at 10.15am. i had a visitor at reception. "i wonder who that could be?" i said wearily to myself as i threw some clothes on. once again it was pauletta, this time with a friend. "i've got no money, can you lend me 1000 pesos?" she asked. because of my generosity the night before, she obviously saw me as an atm. it's a shame because she would probably have earned herself double that when i returned to manila. i sent her on her way empty-handed.

the trip to puerto galera was easier than expected. a two hour bus-ride to batangas was followed by a short ferry trip to mindoro. the ferry landed on the beach at sabang, so i collected my luggage and found a good room at sonny's inn for 1300 pesos a night. it was large with a separate kitchen and a balcony with a sea-view.

sabang is a small town within a scenic bay, visited mainly by divers who go on boat-trips to the surrounding islands. there is a narrow walkway stretching along the beach from which all of the restaurants, bars, shops and hotels are accessed. surprisingly given the size and ambience of the place, there are also half a dozen gogo bars (called 'discos' here).

after a leisurely walk, i breathed in the fresh air and decided that sabang was exactly what i needed. i dropped off some laundry and then ate a spicy sea-food dish at eddie's. it was so spicy i had to hastily order a few bottles of sprite and gulp them down. once my mouth had cooled down, i went to see what sabang had to offer in the way of nightlife.

the first gogo i went to was pink panther. only two girls were dancing and before i had even taken a sip from my beer, i was joined by a girl called denise. as much as i sometimes like a bit of flesh on the bone, there's a fine line between 'curvy' and 'chubby' and this girl had crossed it. she was a nice girl though so i bought her a drink. there were 15 girls rep001tered around the bar, including a few i liked the look of. i watched a girl do a spectacular solo dance routine that included doing the splits. given my injury, just watcing made my eyes water! the bar-fine here was 1000 pesos with a further 1000 pesos going to the girl.

after a few drinks i walked the short distance to sabang disco. it was darker with stools surrounding a long stage. again only two or three were dancing but there were probably about 20 dotted around the perimeter, trying to latch on to customers. soon i was clinking bottles with a pretty girl called lin, who had dark curly hair and a nice face. she was a real sweetheart and definitely the type of girl i would consider bar-fining, if i was fit to do so. i also had fun with a group of four girls sat opposite. one of them was leaning against her hand looking bored, so i mimicked her, much to her (and her friends) amusement. there were some nice girls in here, including one babe with a killer body who compared favourably to most i had seen in angeles.

as much as i love visiting gogo bars, it just isn't the same when you subtract the thrill of wondering who you will end up fucking. it was about midnight so i decided to head back to my hotel for an early night. i felt happily buzzed from half a dozen san miguel beers as i walked along the beach back to my room.


day 8: puerto galera

switching effortlessly in to 'tourist mode', i decided to spend the day on a boat trip. i chartered a small boat but told the owner that i needed to get breakfast first so i'd be back in fifteen minutes. i went to eddies and ordered 'french toast & coffee' from the menu. the french toast arrived with honey, so i polished that off, but where was the coffee? it was taking too long so i went to pay the bill but noticed that it was for the full amount. i politely pointed out to the waitress that i didn't get any coffee but she got shirty and told me that i had to pay the full amount. ordinarily i might have argued my case, perhaps suggesting that i could get a free coffee on my next visit, but i was in a relaxed frame of mind and didn't want any negativity. i also didn't want to waste time quibbling over a few pesos when i was in a rush to go on a boat trip.

i spent the day exploring the islands, swimming in the warm water and sunbathing on a nearby beach. i could get used to being a tourist! there were also encouraging signs that my injury was getting better, as the bruising felt less sore. maybe it was the sea air or the relaxed vibes, or maybe even good karma after my good deed in manila? whatever the reason, i was excited that in a few days i would be shagging pretty filipino girls again. i found an internet cafe and booked a flight to cebu. no rest for the wicked.

that night i ate at a sea-food restaurant overlooking the bay. although sabang is a divers resort, there were two old gents, eating on their own, taking a keen interest in the passing 'traffic' on the beach. when i paid my bill, i made sure i told the manager how friendly and attentive the two young waitresses had been. as i was doing so, a cigarette promo girl walked past who was undoubtedly the prettiest girl i had seen on the trip so far (even beating 'miss perfect', which is quite a feat given her name). she was wearing a cowboy hat and see-through sari with white underwear beneath. she had a 'wow' face and a 'wow' body too - a definite 10/10 girl. i felt a stirring in my pants, which pleasingly wasn't followed by a sharp pain - my groin injury was getting better. :)

it was gogo time. i opted to visit philippine village first. there were more girls than the bars i visited the night before, with six dancing on stage and lots more on the sidelines. a pretty young girl called ella sat beside me and whispered in my ear "you are gwapo" (handsome). she had braces on her teeth, a cute appeal and large boobs hidden away beneath an unflattering dress. when it was her turn to dance, some of the other girls laughed at her attempts at dancing sexily. this told me that she was new to the bar... in other words, just my kind of girl. i considered bar-fining her, but decided against it. it was maybe a day too soon to resume my sexual escapades and i didn't want to jeopardise the cebu leg of my tour. it was a shame, ella was extremely fuckable.

shangri-la edsa is in ortigas center which is half way between makati (the go-go bars) and cubao.

i got a metercab to makati, the business district. skyscrapers towered overhead and there seemed to be 5-star hotels on every corner. it was cleaner, less chaotic and the poverty and beggars of ermita seemed a world away. the taxi driver dropped me off in front of renaissance hotel (which is also called new world hotel) and then using the excellent directions from this website, i walked to phoenix massage, round the back. i'm a big fan of massage parlours and was eager to find out how it would compare to the many i had visited in thailand. from past experiences, nataree in bangkok is the 'creme de la creme' of massage parlours, but i would have settled for something along the lines of sayuri in chiang mai or even cristins in phuket. these kind of places have some exceptionally pretty girls in their fishbowls. feeling excited, i found roman suites (phoenix is upstairs) but there was a 'closed' sign on the door. a security guard told me that they were due to re-open again the week after.

unfortunately i hadn't made a note of alternative massage parlours in the vicinity. i had hoped to fuck a girl in phoenix and then explore the greenbelt 3 freelance scene nearby, but that masterplan had fallen at the first hurdle.

so, a little earlier than expected, i walked in to greenbelt, a large upmarket mall. there were some extremely pretty girls but certainly not pay-for-play. near entrance 3 is a large garden area, an oasis in the concrete jungle, surrounded by restaurants and bars. i heard that cafe havana is a great place to meet upmarket freelancers, so bought a beer (p103) and sat on one of the many tables outside. i stayed there from 7.30pm to 8.30pm but didn't pick up on any sexy freelance vibes at all. there were no girls trying to catch my eye, instead there were lots of couples having dinner and children running around in the small park opposite. two security guards lingered around for the entire duration of my stay - maybe security have flushed the freelancers away from this classy corner of manila? on the plus side though, cafe havana employ some very pretty waitresses.

next door, starbucks also gets mentions on the internet as a potential freelance venue but it was the same story there - lots of couples and families. there was one unaccompanied filipino lady, who smiled at me as i walked past, but on this evidence i think you can rule out greenbelt 3 as a place for freelance action. perhaps i had chosen the wrong night or was there too early?

fair to say that my night wasn't going as planned. the massage parlour was closed and there weren't any freelancers at cafe havana. to ensure that my trip to makati wasn't entirely wasted, i decided to go to the gogo bars on p. burgos st. i didn't have high hopes as i had heard that they are very expensive, which stands to reason given their location in the business district. but i was curious to visit, especially since they are rumoured to employ some of the prettiest girls in manila.

it took me 20 minutes to walk there, although given the humidity i regretted not getting a taxi. there was lots of flashing neon and persistent hawkers trying to sell me viagra. i didn't like the atmosphere of the place. it reminded me of patpong in bangkok, the perfect place to get ripped off.

someone told me that papillon is a 'must-see' but i have to disagree. it was very small and had a poor layout which meant i couldn't see all of the dancers. worst of all though, just after i had sat down i was joined by three gro's, all in their thirties. the one to my left, heavily made-up and bulging out of her tight outfit, kept trying to put her hand down my trousers, while a waitress went through the usual charade of trying to make me buy lady-drinks for each of my unwanted companions. it was a shame, they were blocking the view of a few nice looking younger girls who were dancing. i finished my drink quickly and the waitress suggested that i should tip each of the girls before i left. it was an annoying place with far too much pressure for drinks/tips, geared to rip off newbies. no thanks.

on the corner, flamingo was much better. it was far larger with a circular stage on which 15 girls were dancing (and one was sat on a rocking horse). the quality of girls was probably on par with edsa, although i was joined by mariella, a gorgeous girl in a red lacy top with large dangly gold earrings that made her look like a bollywood actress. she has an expensive hair-style and maybe the prettiest smile i had seen on this trip. my san miguel cost p150 and her tiny glass of red wine was p300 (what was it, a 1934 vintage?). not only was mariella a beautiful girl, she was sexy too. she lap-danced for me and then sat astride me, her small-but-perfectly-formed tits inches from my face. my dick voted 'yes'.

tentatively i asked her how much it would cost to bar-fine her, bracing myself because p.burgos gogos are renowned for being expensive. she told me that the bar-fine was a massive 2200 pesos and it would cost a further 2500 pesos for short-time. ouch. it was far more than i was willing to pay. to put it into context, i had taken a gorgeous girl from a gogo in angeles for about a quarter of that price and that was for long-time! even so, i was tempted, purely because this girl was such a star. thankfully though, i saw sense. if she had been a freelancer in la cafe, i wouldn't have hesitated but the bar-fine was ridiculous.

i decided not to waste any more time in makati. judging by the two bars i had visited, the p.burgos st gogo scene was far too commercial and expensive - definitely one to leave to businessmen happy to pay over-the-odds. but not just that, apart from mariella, the girls weren't really that special. of course there were some cuties to be seen, but certainly no more than edsa or the bars in angeles.

i decided to head back to la cafe where i hoped to hastily negotiate terms with one of the young cuties on the bottom floor. unfortunately though, it didn't go to plan as i felt ill on the 15 minute taxi-ride back. with my stomach doing somersaults, i went back to my hotel room for an early night. it had been a night in which everything had gone wrong. the massage parlour was closed, cafe havana had no freelancers and the p burgos st gogo bars were a let-down. then to top it all off, i felt ill on the way back so ended the night without a girl.

tomorrow i would definitely be heading to angeles, i needed a change of scene.

Shangri-la EDSA is in Ortigas Center which is half way between Makati (the go-go bars) and Cubao.

There is not very much action around Ortigas Center. No girlie bars here any more.

It will take you 15. 20 mins by taxi Tuesday. Thursday & Sat/Sun and around an hour or even more on Monday or Fridays, especially Friday between 5. 9 pm to get from Shangri-la EDSA to Makati.

Robinson's Mall (Malate) is on the other side of Manila, and will take you around an hour to get there (and 150. 200 php)

The 2nd Floor refers to Conway's Bar which is in Shangri-la Makati, not Shangri-la EDSA.

The times I have quoted are very variable. If it rains heavily, add 15 mins on to all trips IF you can find a taxi. Hotel cars will take you anywhere but prices start at 1000 pesos minimum. Thanks so much for the great feedback. Is there any action at all inside the Shangri-La? Would you recommend anything close? I wish I was staying back at the Makiti Shangri-La, but no luck due to work.

I didn't intend paying the extra money, so told the waitress that there had been some confusion. "I did not ask for lady" I said with a smile on my face, "I will pay for drinks, no lady". I had a similar scam tried on me in Thailand once before. Usually it involves several big security guards, so you have no choice but to pay. In this instance though, I felt pretty safe because the only security guard was from Amazonia (and he knew that he would get in to trouble if I was to tell the manager of Amazonia about his little scam). If ever anything like this happens to you, the key is to maintain your composure and smile as much as possible. If I had started shouting and acting confrontational, the situation would certainly have escalated.

Such things have happend to me on a rare occurrence in the Philippines, but they always backed down when I politely refused to pay. One time in Shanghai (in a beautiful high end club), I was given an $80 bill for something that should have cost $7. I refused to pay and was roughed up by a large bouncer. He ended up being hurt more then me and I never did pay (I guess because if I was seriously hurt, the police would get involved and we would all lose). The point is, these types of disputes VARY RARELY turn violent in the Philppines. It is way too easy here to get someone killed for a couple of hundred $$, so people go out of there way to be all smiles at the end of any dispute as nobody wants to have an enemy.

I just come back from Manila. Duirng my four nights visits, the Manila Bay Cafe was as busy as before. Lots of girls stay on the ground floor. Some of them were cute in my eye. The girls on the second floor had better face and body. They now charged only P50 for the band. Also the security in the front door got more tight, but only for the ladies.

I've been surfing on this great site for years and stick to Thailand or Phlippines threads since I travel to these two counties a lot. I notice you have make lots of great contributions to this site. Some did gave me a great help.

During my last trip in Manila, I found that EDSA complex had much better selections than other famous places in town. The girls there I picked were all cute and have great personality, which is fun for me. The price went up a little but still reseanable compare to the bars in Burgos area.

For me, LA Cafe is a good place to hang out. The drink is cheap and the band is good. It appears to me that South Korea guys love these places and the girls on the second floor welcome them as well.

During most of times, I travel alone. So it won't be fun for me to go to the club you mentioned. Hope next time when I am in town, I may have the chance to buy you a beer.

distances are measured in the philippines in terms of the time it takes to travel from one place to the other.

from edsa shangri-la to edsa complex will take you varying times at different times of the day and night and on different days.

it will take you around 30 - 45 mins during most days except monday and fridays when you can add on at least 15 mins.
between 5pm and 9 pm it could take you 30 - 45 mins.
saturday and sunday it is faster and you could expect to cover it in 20 - 30 mins.
the reverse trip (edsa complex to edsa shangri-la) if taken after midnight to 1 am will take about 10 mins and can be hair-raising because cabs tend to speed like crazy because it is the only time they can actually drive instead of creep along in 1st gear.

there is a small bar on the 1st mezzanine floor near to the papparazzi resto that has live music and you might find something there. usually it is filipinos in groups but sometimes there could be 1 or 2 guys and 4 or 5 girls in a group and the unattached girls sometimes have roaming eyes as they feel left out of the fun.

you can go next door (5 min walk) to sm megamall and try your luck. i have never seen any options but some guys have picked up numbers so you might too.
shangri-la in makati has a conway's bar (check earlier comments here) at which you can definitely score, but if you are going to travel down to makati (30 - 40 min or 120 php taxi ride), you might as well go to cafe havana or burgos or further south to edsa complex as well.

I agree with Stunning. I know many girls from Caloocan. It is very easy for them to travel to Malate/Ermita area to meet me there, and all for a few pesos jeepney/bus fare.
The risk that you run in actually living in that area is that if anything goes wrong between you and any of the Caloocan girls you meet, then you are way too close to the boyfrens, brothers, fathers and uncles who can quickly be enlisted to sort out the foreigner. One presumes they will all know where you live.

I can't think of any good reason to live in Caloocan at all, even if it is cheap. You can get cheap accommodation in much better areas.

You figured you had already spent around 4 or 5000 php (I am guessing) on the girl and her friends, and you think that in return she should "repay" you with sex.
The reality is that you could have spent <1000 php on her at any cheaper eatery and offered her 1500 - 3000 or whatever and she would have been VERY happy and been keen to come home with you.

"Cash is king" is what my accounts professors always drummed in me and it is no different with many pinays.

Why bother with lovely food and wine when they will like sisig, lechon and chop suey as much as rack of lamb, lobster and steak....sound harsh but is generally true.

Many a monger takes them to Jollibee or 'splashes out' in a Starbucks then gives them the hard cash and everyone is happy (including at times the family of the girl who gets some of her cash). I have never thought that a good mal is a way to reduce the price...a good meal is also my enjoyment and has nothing to do with what happens later. In fact I take girls to nice places as I like good place to eat/drink and I like to think at times they will enjoy seeing a diffferent part of life and have a new experience...well afterwards they may get a new "experience" also :D

I think it is a jungle there. I don't live in a comfortable condo , but with a nice philipino flatmate who know how unconfortable and dangerous in can be for me. However he is a nice guy and always bring me to his family place. I feel a bit more safe thanks to him. As soon as I can I will find a nice condo in makati to live here on my own. I will also be able to bring more girls there.

It's a shame he does not know more girls in his place. He is quite a shy guy haha.

I mean, a trip to Jolibees is a real gastronomic treat to most Filipinos. Have you seen what they eat at home? As far as I can gauge, from checking out shopping baskets at the supermarkets, half the population seem to live on cans of sardines and packets of instant noodles:D.
