Ya, I'd recommend Subic. Or go back to Sabang.Last time I was 2.5 years ago in Sabang with a girl I met in Manila. She was then 20 years old. I would say the bus to Subic is no more than 300 pesos from Manila considering it is like 150 to Angeles.Yes, I think the Manila-Olangapo bus is P250, plus P12 for the jeepney to Barretto. The Southern Cross shuttle is about twice that much but worth it to me -- just get on and relax and they drop you off right at your hotel.

Earlier reports from me and others about the expiration of p4 p at Harrison Place Mall may have been premature. I was there Saturday about 6 pm accompanied by my main squeeze and two others. Most complaints about taxis have involved scamming attempts. I probably have experienced these in fewer than 10% of my taxi encounters in Manila. But another problem is the incompetent or ignorant driver who pretends to know the destination but really doesn't. Last Friday night an associate and I left Terminal 2 in a regular taxi driven by a doddering old geezer. We told him to drop the associate at a named hotel at the corner of Estrada and Arellano a few blocks east of Taft in Malate and then drop me at Birch Towers on Bocobo in the block closest to Robinson's Place Mall. He repeated "corner Estrada and Arellano, said something about "Taft" (yup, right neighborhood) and "Bobobo," and off we went. He drove extraordinarily slow by Manila taxi standards and this should have been cause for concern: either that his mental capacities were beyond their expiration date or that he was unsure where he was going. Or perhaps we gave him more English than he could handle. Or all of the above.
He was doing okay going north on Roxas and then east on Pablo Ocampo, but when he started turning left on Taft I knew he was getting it wrong. I told him "derecho, derecho," (meaning straight ahead on Ocampo), but he just kept turning. (In hindsight I think he was fixated on the hotel's proximity to Taft; unfortunately it's four blocks from Taft on Estrada, which is one-way the wrong way.) he led us on a wild goose chase all the way to Quirino, turned right on San Andres for one block, then right on Leon Guinto. This still puts him three blocks too far west, and Estrada, when he crossed it, runs the wrong way. I took over giving directions at that point-kaliwa (left) on Pablo Ocampo," "derecho, derecho" (to keep him from turning off prematurely), then "kaliwa on Arellano" when he started to turn right, and finally "para dito" (stop here, roughly, I think) when we got to the hotel on Arellano.
I then repeated "Birch Towers on Bocobo, do you know where that is"? No answer. "Do you know Remedios Circle"? "Yes, Remedios Circle. " But instead of turning right from Estrada onto Taft, he turned left, south, then west on Ocampo. He then turned right on Mabini. This does eventually get close to Remedios Circle, so I suspect his only orientation to Remedios Circle was from the airport, and that his roundabout route back by Ocampo simply got him back to what he was familiar with. So his internal GPS just couldn't get him to Bocobo by the more direct route via Taft. (The next day another driver took me directly from my associate's hotel via Estrada, Taft, San Andres, and Bocobo as though the route were on the back of his hand.).
Once we were on Mabini we moved forward at about the pace of a walk. Except that it was midnight and there was no traffic. This was a giveaway that the old man had no idea where he was going. He eventually turned right onto Remedios Street but then drove on past the circle where he should have turned to the north on Bocobo. I eventually took over with instructions again, and once we got to the corner of Orosa and Pedro Gil I just told him to stop, paid, and walked the block and a half to Birch Towers with my luggage. What should have been about a 200 peso ride ran to more than 300 because of all his blind maneuvers. I don't mind the extra 100 pesos, but taking more than two hours for a 30 to 40 minute trip pissed me off, and there was no reason to have arrived at my hotel after midnight when the flight got us to Terminal 2 at about ten.
Most on the forum will ignore this post. No skin off my nose. But I posted it to offer some cultural lessons. First, Filipinos sometimes pretend to understand when in fact they do not want to look dumb by admitting they don't. I screwed up by not recognizing that his reference to "Taft" when we got in his cab at the airport was a very vague reference, and I should have pinned him down more precisely. Second, a few basic instructions can be handy when you know where you're going and your driver does not. On my first trip to the Philippines a talkative cabbie asked me if I understood Tagalog. I told him what little I knew. He suggested that some cab drivers don't understand much English, and a few words of instruction could get me by: derecho for straight ahead, kanan for right, kaliwa for left, para for stop, and dito for here. Some of our expats will have much more extensive Filipino lexicon, but these instructions have served me well on many occasions.

I hear it is more reliable, fewer bad experiences. I might try it on the way out this week to the airport and see if it works, but if you've tried it already I'd love to hear your take. I know you say "you screwed up" by not recognizing the reference to "Taft" BUT how many possible details and hand holding can you possibly take care of for filipinos? Some things are bound to fall through the cracks. I suppose we should all draw out / print out map directions. But that still won't solve the million other screw ups and scams a manila driver might pull.

I'll often have issues finding an exact building on a street due to bad signage etc but getting within 100 m is pretty easy.

My CitiAtlas: a) doesn't require a data package for my cellphone; b) never runs out of battery charge; c) never has its signal blocked by tall buildings. Its drawbacks are that it needs artificial lighting at night and sometimes requires thumbing through pages to get to a particular part of the city.
I'll often have issues finding an exact building on a street due to bad signage etc but getting within 100 m is pretty easy.And you still need to get the driver to respond when you correct his mistakes or confusion.

This missive is geared toward those who frequent the lower-end offerings in the Ermita area of Manila and are somewhat price sensitive and willing to accept average-looking providers. Those of you with higher standards and bulging wallets might want to ignore my story.
A couple of weeks ago I spent a few days in Manila on both ends of a trip to China. I'm retired and on a fixed income and I'm not that much of a nightlife kind of guy. So I went looking for daytime and early evening freelancers at Ermita's well-known lower-rent areas: LA Cafe', the first floor of Robinson's Place Ermita, and the mall side intersection of Adriatico and Pedro Gil streets. Unfortunately the Amazonia Bar has departed the Earth. May its soul rest in peace.
There were plenty of somewhat average-looking providers available, and I asked a few about their prices. 6 months ago the standard price for short time was between 1,000 and 1,500 pesos. But it appears 2,000 pesos is their new price, and most were resistant to cutting their rate to 1,500.
When I would decline and walk away, some would capitulate and say they would be okay with 1,500. But through experience I have learned that in the room they will attempt to guilt me into paying the extra 500. I hate being put in an awkward situation when I'm about to do the deed so I try to avoid haggling whenever possible.
One night I had a couple of beers at the LA Cafe' and decided to head down to the Duck Inn, located on Del Pilar Street about half way between the LA Cafe' and United Nations Avenue. Along the way I passed Hussy's Bar, which has been around for years. I always assumed it was an unsavory "clip joint" so I never visited. But after passing the door, I heard a voice say, "Sir, where are you going"?
Turns out it was a Hussy's GRO in her mid-20's, wearing a mini dress, 4 inch heels, and looking sexier than most of the LA Cafe' women. So I turned around, said Hello, and asked about drink prices. She said customer's beers are 100 and ladies' drinks were 195, which was certainly acceptable to me.
There were about 6 women there, all dressed in a somewhat sexy manner. There were 3 western patrons having a great time too. So my newfound friend and I sat at the bar and enjoyed a couple of drinks and had a very nice no-pressure conversation. After talking about our love of dancing, she asked if I wanted to take her to a club to go dancing. I asked about her barfine and was surprised to hear it was a mere 1,500. So after paying the fine plus 600 for drinks, we headed out the door.
I won't go into great detail about the night's events, but we hit it off famously. The next day was a free day for me, and she asked about my plans. As I didn't have any, she suggested we go on a day trip via bus to Tagaytay. All she asked for was an additional 500 pesos to cover the fee the bar charges girls when they are absent from work. It also equals how much the bar takes out of a 1,500 peso barfine.
I really enjoyed our two days together and could tell she was a sweet girl with a somewhat hard-luck story. So before I checked out of the hotel, I pulled 2,500 pesos from my wallet and handed it to her. She pushed it away and I could tell she didn't want to take it. But I told her that as a single mom, she really needs the money for her kid. To that she shook her head in agreement, took the bills, gave me a heartfelt hug and thanked me.
So during the taxi ride to NAIA I asked myself, "Why is this gal content with netting 1,000 pesos out of a long time barfine while the Ermita freelancers were holding out for 2,000 for short time"? I just have a feeling the local freelance cartel made an edict that 2,000 was to be the new asking price, and most men just go along with the flow and pay it.
Finally I arrived back in Manila and headed to the LA Cafe'. Armed with this newfound knowledge, l felt better equipped to negotiate from a position of strength. I saddled up to the bar and eventually bought a lady a drink. Finally we started discussing price, and she said her short time fee was 2,000. I replied, "Hey, I can go down the street to Hussy's bar and their barfine is just 1,500". And without batting an eye she replied, "Ok I will go for one-five". Back at the room I got pretty darned good service and she didn't try to upsize the price or even ask for a tip.
Just remember, capitalism is good, knowledge is king, and the cheaper the grapes, the sweeter the wine.

Also, I found this funny rather than annoying. Decent restaurant at Mall of Asia overlooking the baywalk. I order a meat dish and some vegetables from the "Vegetarian" section of the menu. The veg turns up with shrimp, pork, and octopus floating in it. I ask the waiter "Isn't this supposed to be a vegetarian dish?" - "Yes, it's a vegetarian dish, sir," he says. Completely deadpan a split second later he adds "With pork. ".

I made all the reservations and arrived in Manila from BKK on and 1st May and checked into the City Garden Suites Hotel in Manila. There was a delay at the check in time and a non smoking room was not available, the girl at the reception upgraded me to a bigger room, # 210. Shortly though there was an emergency back home and I was forced to make travel arrangements for immediate return back.

I stayed in Malate, about 20 minutes in minimum traffic from the airport. Airport taxi got me to the hotel for 800 pesos.
My place of choice, the Victoria Court Hotel, was recommended by someone on some site, and I can see why. It is a drive-in, no-tell shacking up spot with short term to 24 hour stays. Cars can park inside closed garages, so if you have a car, no one at all see the lady who pulls a cap over her face or covers it with a scarf until safely behind locked doors. Lots of locals come in, and you can just roll down your window and give a hand signal, all of which are shown on a convenient sign posted near the outside check in stand. The hand signal lets them know what type of room you want, and then I guess you specific how many hours. The ranges seem to go from 2 to 24 hours. I booked my cheap room ($50 per night) on line and walked in from the taxi. Pay in advance, get the key, go the nice, but sparse, room. AC works well, hot shower, windows shut absolutely blocking out any sun (good for sleeping in), TV with all the channels and you can come and go as you please with whoever (and how many of these whoevers) you want. The sign for the hotel is a lady giving the "shhhhhssss" sign, as in "don't tell. ".
There are other types of these hotels, and they are mostly chains. SoGo, right across the street from Victoria, costs about $10 for two hours, no questions asked at check in. Good options if you want to keep your place and goods safe and all else away from your home base.
The seedier areas start just outside, and if you walk around a bit you will weave in and out of karaoke joints and a few go go bars, punctuated by beer garden type gigs, Korean restaruants and local eateries where common folk drink giant red horse beers with ice. Plenty of girls in the street, especially later in the evening in the few blocks with the most bar type things. Again, pretty obvious who they are.
I spent a lot of time at the L. A. Café, which stays open 24 hours and from what I could see, has girls any time you pop in. I had breakfast at around 10 AM and was surprised and the quantity, and quality, available. It just gets better as the day goes on and peaks about midnight. Every girl not wearing a serving outfit is available, and as mentioned often before, 1500 pesos ($30) is the going rate when one of the girls tickles your fancy. No bar fine, and beers for everyone (meaning the ladies too) are 100 pesos ($2). If you buy a drink for a waitress it gets another 100 pesos added on, so beware if that annoys you. Girls will bargain on their price, especially as the night wears on, and they come and stay the night—your hotel is probably much better than their small room which they share with several other girls, so it is sort of a treat for them I believe. Some will leave when the deed is done, but more the norm to snooze it out with a good morning shag to start the day.
My advice would be to look for a girl who seems to be enjoying herself--one that is happy and smiling and having a bit of fun. She will take this attitude out with her if you are nice to her and treat her well. The girls are in general not as jaded as in other spots, and some really do have day jobs and they don't really think of themselves as hookers. Treat them like working girls and they get a bit offended. Buy her and her friends a beer or so, which at $2 per bottle will not break the bank, make small talk, joke, and generally treat them like fine ladies who have the outlook on life of 19 year-old sorority girls on a binge drinking evening during spring break, and they will make you feel happy too.
The nearby mall, Robinsons, is a popular cruising spot too. Just go stand near the main entrance and wait for girls to walk by and start up a conversation. It took me about 10 minutes to have 3 or 4 give me a go. The asking price was 1500 pesos.
I did get a waitress from one of the beer joints to meet for lunch the next day, after buying her a shot of tequila (with the extra 100 pesos) and asking for her phone number. We had a bit to eat when we met, then went to my hotel room and shagged. I asked if I could give her money to help out. She had paid for the taxi to the hotel after all. She was a bit offended and told me she was not a hooker. I insisted she take about $400 peso to cover her taxi home. I wanted to go see her again, but time and other avenues for adventure in my remaining stay did not allow such a reunion. Alas, next time.
One night while wandering the back roads, I also got a street walker. Negotiated down to $1000 pesos, but she was dull, asked for money once we go to the short stay hotel and not worth the time or money already invested. Better to just hang out at the L. A. Café or the other beer garden type places. The go go bars were boring to me, it was off season and the girls, and there were some lookers for sure, seemed listless and giving off a vibe like they wanted to be somewhere else. The places have bar fines to get the girls out, you got to talk with her about more money, drinks are more expensive and the allure of clothed pole dancers shrugging their shoulders to loud music and looking like they are antsy to check their facebook posts just does not trigger the devil in me.

Ok, for the record, I DID read a lot but it never hurts to ask!Virtually all of Manila's top end hotels place no restrictions on girls going to your room. My default hotel in Makati is the Fairmont which, together with the Shangri-La likely represents the top of the Makati Hotel pyramid. I've never had an issue with either hotel, though both will call you prior to allowing the girl to go. That said, it probably pays to make sure the girl isn't wearing something so provocative that the hotel could not ignore it.
As to outcall services, Smooci I notice has just started services in Manila. There are other escort services, such as Manila Courtesans that some find reliable. I've never relied on these sorts of services so I'm not speaking from personal experience. As in Bangkok, it's fairly easy to find something to your liking in Manila, in any bar on Burgos St. , or in Edsa Entertainment Complex or even, if you have the time and patience, LA Café. Thanks.If you are used the quality of women you find in Taipei, you will be sorely disappointed with the ones at LA Cafe. Burgos is indeed the RLD street, and some of the places like Bottoms, Kojax and PlanB have incredibly hot women, but they are mind numbingly expensive. Another popular spot to check out is EDSA. The clubs in Manila are always a great place to find talent, but they get going real late and you definitely need a bit of game.

Was in AC and MNL for a couple days each last week, and will get around to writing an AC report, but wanted to comment on Flight 168, the full service massage, located in the basement of Air Force One, near NAIA airport. And I RTFF for more detailed info on flight 168 but couldn't find much that was recent.
Logistics: There is a separate door for Flight 168 (to the right of AF1), but it was closed, so I entered through AF1. Up the elevator to the 2nd floor, past the reception desk, take the escalators down, so yes up one then down one. Once there, there is a reception desk straight ahead and a room to the left (not sure what this is, but might be part of the AF1 KTV). Papasan greets me, and brings me just behind the reception desk where there is a fishbowl of sorts. I say this because you don't look through glass but rather an odd set of wood frames with circular cut-outs. You can see the girls decently enough, and I guess it provides a little security in that they can't quite fully see you. Place is 24 hours, there was maybe 15 or so girls and was told there are three 8 hour shifts to accommodate round the clock. I was charged 2 k for the room and 2 k for the girl. The 2 k for the room was for business class. Room was ok, decently sized with a shower, toilet, TV, queen bed. A step up from the rooms at snow white or soi 24 massage rooms in BKK, but clearly a step down from a place like Poseidon or soapies in Ratchada. If you are Chinese, just be a little more careful. Some criminal elements target the Chinese.

1. Regional Food. Filipino cuisine cannot compare to Thai cuisine. But since you've already been the BKK Manila may be better as the selection and quality of western food is a lot better in Manila. 2. Safety. I'm no expert again, but I felt that Bangkok was a lot safer to walk around late at night than in Manila. 4. Traffic and Transportation. Bangkok has less traffic and BTS lines to the major RLDs. With Manila, traffic is just a part of your night. Or you're walking it. 4. Pure Selection of girls. Bangkok has far more gogo bars with far more girls than Manila. 5. Looks. It almost seems that the more you pay here, the worse the food. I have tried all level of restaurants and it's inconsistent.
The line about Jolibee is good, they are consistent. One day they ran out of chicken. I don't know how a chicken chain does that.

This is OK for us residents GE but it's not likely that a 2-week visitor is going to have any way of "knowing the restaurant at which he / she is eating".
Even assuming the 5-star places will have good food-handling processes is a risk. A family member visiting me just 2 months ago had to be hospitalized after eating the buffet at Shangri-la, Makati. I have also eaten local oysters without ill effects, but a colleague enjoying the same oysters as me and at the same table became violently ill, so I don't think telling visitors to be cautious about food choices is hyperbole at all.
When I work in adjacent SE Asian countries as a 3 to 4-week visitor I am extremely cautious about what and where I eat, but I still manage to enjoy my travels.

And rarely cooked. He spend weeks recovering so if in doubt don't eat. Like RK I travel a lot and am very cautious as one bad food day can mean I suffer and can't work (or worse I am working and keep running out of the meeting room LOL).
If in doubt don't eat it. In India and Pakistan I avoid all salad even from the better hotels as similar to RK story. Also friend got sick at the Intercon sea food buffet (in Asia) eating crab. That ruined the whole trip and when she ate the crab was Day 2 of her journey.

A bad experience several years ago makes me apprehensive about oysters in the Philippines, even cooked ones. I went with eight or nine Filipino colleagues to a place on E. Rodriguez Avenue where it becomes C-5 in the Eastwood and Bagumbayan area in Quezon City. There was a sort of farmers' market with vegetables, seafood, and meat, and, after you selected your raw ingredients, a place next door would cook your food to order.
We had selected raw and cooked oysters, as well as shrimp, some meat and vegetables. Everything except the raw oysters was cooked. I avoided the raw oysters but was one of about a half dozen that ate cooked oysters. Later, two others who had eaten cooked oysters and I got violently sick. Three others who ate them did not get sick.
So maybe the immunity thing that Sammon described was selectively effective. As the only foreigner I clearly did not have the immunity. I had been in country about three months at the time.
Perhaps this place was inherently hazardous, although the Filipinos I was with were well-educated and knew their way around Quezon City. I suspect the safety of oysters is a YMMV phenomenon, but it only takes one such experience for somebody with my temperament to be warned off Philippine oysters permanently.

Also, while talking about allergies one has to consider the Big 8. Milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybean. Many places will use these food groups as a derivative in their food preparation and the unwitting diner gets a rude shock.

Okay, I give up. Perhaps the extreme caution is well advised. I've gotten food-related sickness here exactly once in 18 years but perhaps I was generalizing too much from my own experience. I've got some experience in the restaurant industry here, and I do admit that employees need to be carefully trained in appropriate handling of all foods: the necessity to wash hands before and after touching any food; the requirement to wear disposable, sanitary gloves, are all foreign to many new hires. And it does require keeping a constant eye on employees to make sure they adhere to appropriate food handling rules. Further, in Davao, I know the owners of the virtually all the restaurants to which I go, and I'm pretty familiar with how they operate their kitchens, and I concede that a newbie would not know these things.

Just let the vendor know that you want unlimited servings. Always make sure the clams are fresh if you like to eat them raw, as eating a bad clam can make you very ill. Eating raw blood clams is very risky, as they tend to pick up pathogens when feeding.

Many delicious Korean restaurants in Makati. I'll guess you like Korean food, and I've yet to meet a Pinay who doesn't like it. Go to Seoul Kalbi in General Luna Street.
I reckon if you can specify a budget and what kind of food you like (or what you dislike) you might get better recommendations. As it is now, it's wild guesses.

"Simple" Pinays do not care much for expensive Italian or French food; a fair number of girls have told me they are disgusted by anything in a cream sauce (I won't bring up the irony here).
