I stopped by LA yesterday at 3 pm. Compared to the previous day, there were more guys and far fewer women of acceptable standards. One guy had a bucket of five beers in front of him. I thought he was sharing with someone, but apparently not. I'll call him "bucket guy".

IMHO, as I get much older, better if the gents remained in their seats and let the domestic / lovers tiff work itself out. Let the local staff take care of it. Police are sometimes called, and management definitely doesn't want problems with the authorities. It was about eight or so years ago that Mayor Lim shut down LAC for several months. It returned under a different name, "Manila Bay Cafe," and then eventually reverted back to the original name.

You would think that evictions also hold for men who cause trouble, but perhaps the women are more permanent and recognizable fixtures, and their identities are easier to trace through the bamboo grapevine.

Last time in Manila in April, I stopped in one night for a few hours. Some sort of a fight broke out near the pool tables in the back, and the fight apparently got shoved outside. The police showed up and started questioning people, even going inside to pull people outside to interview. Rumor spread through the women that it involved an unpaid pool bet. I left about 90 minutes later and the police were still outside talking to people.

Perhaps I just have an acerbic affect that rubs off on others around me; so I'm sort of a disease carrier, although I don't get in fights myself. You, on the other hand, probably have a calming effect that mellows out others around you. Hence, no problems when you're there. LAC management should welcome you with open arms.

Seriously there are lots of employers out there that would take a very dim view of anything that openly violated their sense of morality, even if they fantasize about doing it themselves or actually do it themselves.

In this hobby a significant measure of discretion is always necessary, unless you have nothing to lose. I'm retired and single so not as worried as many here should be but even so I am always careful and private about my activities. Two of my closest friends were also mongers for years and all three of us did not realize it for a long time. So far these are just about the only people, other than the ladies of course, outside of a couple of meetings from this and similar forums that know about my hobby.

Internally, he cannot be seen by his wife or superiors to provide support or shelter to anyone caught. To do so would risk his own position and / or marriage.

Externally, no business unit wants to appear in the press and be seen as morally corrupt. Reputational and contractual damage is just not worth it.

That's why today the Hobby is very widely practiced by resident expat workers but those that are too visible generally find themselves back home fairly quickly.

"Back in the day" it was open and no one cared but that's a whole other post. 😁.

So many expat monger horror stories here! Two common issues arise in most of them. The first issue is that the monger married, handed his balls, and more importantly his finances over to a shrewish wife. In doing so, the monger failed to maintain separate and secret cash reserves out of the reach of his controlling shrew. Hence, he left himself extremely vulnerable to the stiff sanctions of divorce or extortion by threat of divorce actions. LOL!

The second common mistake is that the monger decided to get marvelous BBBJCIM from his employees or coworkers opening himself up to legal liability and worse. There are natural consequences to shitting in one's nest. LOL!

So I am walking down Adriatico and about to turn back to meet this chick that works at the University at Robinson's. Was also told 30 to 45 bank days for refund to be processed. I am going to dispute bill on my credit card since I did not get any service for my cash outlay and the bank should protect the purchase. Don't know if they will but will cause some agro for Cebu Pacific.

Had a good time last night. Met this chick on Tinder a few months ago while I was in Manila, but she never had time to meet. She is a dean for graduate students at one of the universities. You have reasonable time for a quick fix.

Places like burgos, LA Cafe is open throughout and you may even hit a jackpot as some bars may be closing and you could always pick someone outside the bar. You can try Edsa as that's closer to airport. Last option is Airport 1.

I thought I posted something but here goes again. If you take your carry on and valuables with you, you might be able to keep it on premise at the bar as in under the table. Though I have never seen that but I don't see why you cannot. If you find something, book a room on line and take a grab cab (pre-load the app and credit card). I would suggest staying close to the airport and take the girl LT if you find the right one. Check where your flight leaves from and if the hotel has a shuttle or just a walk away. Traffic can be bad in the morning.

The advantage is that you won't spend on a hotel unless you need to. If you are unsuccessful, you can clean up at an airport lounge.

I must say though that I am not sure why you would need separate hotels when you are only staying in Manila a few hours.

Last Friday I checked out of my hotel in Ermita at 1 pm. My flight to Thailand was not until 6:30. A massage chick that I met on WeChat had been with me all morning. I had already planned to spend a couple of hours at LA Cafe before heading to the airport. So I walked up to LA Cafe with my things (backpack, recycled shopping bag). When I got inside I placed my things on the floor next to the table behind the door then I went to sit at a good table where my things were still in view. I ordered some chicken and a cider.

While eating my food, there were some chicks across from me talking shit. Neither of them were my type so I did not pay them much mind., but still joked back and forth. Then another chick comes and joins them. Now this chick was my type! I talked a little shit with her while finishing my meal. When I finished I asked to see her phone. She gave it to me. I looked at the whatsapp messages from other guys then I added myself to her phone book and sent a whatsapp message from her phone to myself.

I told her that next time I am in Manila I would see her. I told her that I wanted to stay at her place though. She is from Davao and said she only has bedspace in Manila. She stays at a place across from LA Cafe in a room with 12 other girls! I was drained from fucking my massage chick so I was really not up for anything. But then I started thinking and thinking. I have a pocket full of cash and I really don't want the anxiety later that I should have fucked this chick.

She kept trying to get me to take her but I kept trying to tell them that I honestly did not have a room. They told me there are rooms next door for 600 pesos for 3 hours or like 1000 for 1 day. I told them I didn't even have 3 hours to spare. Fuck it. This chick was tall and did not even look Filipina. She looked like she had to be mixed with Arab or Indian. Funny thing is without me even telling her that, she told me that people always think she is Arab or Indian, but her parents are both Filipino.

Push came to shove and I asked her how much she wanted. She said 2000. I laughed and said 1000. She said let's go! So heading out the door I gather my things and said, "What? Did y'all think I was lying about not having a place?" We went next door to the hotel. I told the lady that I only needed the room for 1 hour, but she said the minimum charge is for 3 hours. So I handed her 1000 pesos. She gave me 400 change. We followed the bellhop up to the room. I was paying no attention and do not even have any idea what floor it was on.

It was a basic apartment overlooking M.H. del Pilar with a living room and a kitchen and a separate bedroom. The guy turned on the AC and left. We took showers and got down to the deed fucking like rabbits. I took another shower before leaving her alone in the room. I told her that I would definitely see her again next time. I went downstairs and told the lady the girl was still in the room and would leave later. She asked what room. I said I have no idea. Then I went out to call a Grab.

Shit. It would have been better to just get a normal taxi. The wait time on Grab was 8 minutes. And somehow that turned into at least 20. There was a chick outside who was rather pretty, but her bottom teeth were rotted out. She kept trying to get me to go fuck. I kept telling her that I just finished. I asked and what are you doing out here instead of trying to look for someone inside of LA Cafe. She said that she had gotten banned for fighting. I said wow and told her that I have never seen any fighting or even arguments in there. Finally the Grab came and I was on my way to NAIA Terminal 3. I think it was 344 pesos plus the skyway toll of 45 pesos.

So there you are fellow American. Just head over to LA Cafe and get one of those cheap rooms next door for your few hours stay.

4 years ago that was the low range for LT, I can recall getting 2 Thai's for AED 800 LT in 2012. That was total not each BTW.

I have not been posting FR's here because my hunting style simply does not lend it to the typical FR.

I live here and as such can take my time developing contacts into regulars. I also am not fond of the bar scene bar fining different girls every night with the hassle and risk that that entails. I have no problem if that is your preferred style, just different than what I'm looking for. I also prefer repeat encounters as it gets better as you know each other. Arrived at the hotel and he asked for 890. I looked at the meter and couldn't see anything that resembled the price. There are other smaller numbers up the top and one of these had an 8. 75 or something on it. Anyway I handed over 1000 and he asked if I wanted the change. I still wasn't fussed, thought it was a couple of dollars and let him keep it. A few days later drove past the airport in a taxi to the casino. Cost 300 to go past the airport so I was clearly ripped off. Hope this saves someone a few dollars. Similar thing happened in the taxi back to the airport with two girls when I was going home. Even they got ripped off by the driver who said there was a 300 fee to be paid and he didn't like giving change. They were furious when they told me after I got home. So beware. Need to sleep. They understand that cheating tourists comes back to haunt everybody in the Phils when tourists stop coming, but there are a few bad apples that take advantage of gullible or uninformed foreigners.

The best defense is to inform yourself. Taxi stories in this thread come in flurries. Somebody reports a bad experience, and others respond, with other bad experiences and with good advice. You can use the search tool in the forum to go back in this thread and read some of them.

Here are some lessons and observations I have gleaned. Much of this is overkill for people who take these cabs frequently, but I offer it as precaution for a newbie. All commercial vehicles from trucks to cabs operate under regulations from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). Most cabs have an LTFRB hotline phone number painted on the outside. Write it down before you get in the cab, along with the cab number, and the driver's name (usually attached to the dashboard or front passenger sun visor). If you sense you are being cheated, tell the driver you will contact LTFRB to clarify the rulesand then do so if necessary.

All airport yellow cabs and regular white taxis have meters. The only airport taxis without meters are the white coupon cabs, which are more like small vans, and operate at a flat fee depending on the destination. They are more expensive, and hawkers are very aggressive at the airport terminal exits in trying to lead you to them.

If the white or yellow taxi driver does not turn on the meter, tell him to do so immediately. Sometimes they then say the meter is broken or they need a higher fare because of heavy "troppick. " Some will then try to negotiate a fixed fare. Sometimes the report of heavy traffic is truthful; other times you are going to a destination from which they know they will be unable to get a return fare. The problem for you is that you don't know what a reasonable negotiated fare is.

Unless you know the city well, do not negotiate with them. Just tell them "stop" or "para," firmly. Para may be better, because it tells the driver you are not a novice, since you know a little Tagalog. If they keep trying to negotiate, just keep shaking your head no. You have a choice to get out of the taxi or wait to see if the negotiated price goes down. Depending on their English skills, they will sometimes plead with you by explaining why the meter fare hurts them. It's up to your judgment whether to believe them; some of these guys are just average men trying to feed their families. If you build a rapport with a driver, get his cell number and tell him you will call next time you need a ride.

If you get out, go back to the taxi stand and make sure the driver knows you will report to the ticket agent. You can also call LTFRB if you are so inclined.

At all three major terminals there are also regular white cabs that are cheaper, and perhaps a little less trustworthy, than the yellow meter cabs. At Terminal one, turn right as you go out the door after customs. They are at the end of an island in the roadway. At Terminal two, turn right at the exit door and go way, way down. The white cabs are several hundred meters down to the right. At Terminal three go out the door near Wendy's and proceed across several roadways. The white cabs are at the roadway furthest from the terminal.

When I told him my (popular and easy to find) condo in Malate, he asked for the chit. I handed him the airbnb printed address, but he re-asked for the chit, and I handed it to him. He was overly chatty on the 10 minute (almost no traffic) ride and I wanted him to shut up. When we pulled up to the condo he said "500". I hadn't noticed the meter was off. In fact I couldn't see a meter anywhere, I even turned on my phone light to look for one. I had already peeled off 200 for him (probably more than if he'd run the meter; a month prior the same run at the same time ran me p180). I asked where his meter was. "No meter. 500. Give. " His demeanor changed from happy guy to mafioso enforcer. I sat still and started reading on my phone. He repeated "500" twice more, then "OK 400 you give". You must be kidding. I asked for the chit back, considering taking it back to the airport on my next outbound and reporting his taxi. He said he couldn't find it (in his pocket most likely, and that's why he asked me for it in the first place). I continued to look at my phone. Finally: "Give me 400. Get out of my taxi. Just you out from my taxi". Sold! Well, almost. I stepped out and handed him the 200. The door security was standing there, what was he going to do? He drove off yelling something unknown in Tagalog. Should have taken a pic of his taxi number.

Following evening my girl and I were going to a local live band bar. Light rain and heavy wind. The ride is about 6 blocks. At arrival, the meter (original flagfall p40) had been turned off. The driver said "100". I handed him 50 (an approximate price), we got out, he said nothing and drove off. Reverse trip back to the condo 2 hours later was the exact same story. About halfway to the condo the girl said "Meter!" and the driver said "100". She started to argue and I squeezed her thigh to hush her. At the condo the driver accepted 50, no problem.

If they ask for 50 over meter, that just comes out of their tip. I usually round up to the next nearest 100 p or if close to the 100 p then I'll add in a 50 extra anyway.

I use Grab more than taxi, fixed fare, I use grab pay which gives me more points to higher status and preferred booking status. More than taxi but more reliable and there is a record of your ride so no losing the chit if you have one.

No driver is going to call the police (after not using his meter), and he can't get another fare without you departing his vehicle (if he won't take your reasonable amount, he can't get on to his next customer). He may be disappointed to get 200 instead of 500, but he lives to fight another day (fare). He also learns that applying the foreigner tax doesn't always work.

So, before a taxi driver starts his day, he knows that the first Php2,500-2,800 in fares will just go to cover his expenses. I then asked him how long he worked each day and he told me that he started at 5 AM and finished at 8 PM, every day.

About two years ago I did a side trip to Cubao using LRT 1 and 2. Decided to take a taxi on my way back to Malate. It was rush hour around 4 ish and the driver ask for 100 on top of the meter. I said OK. The trip took us 3 hours and total cost was 280 if I remember correctly. I handed him a 500 bill and said he does not have change. I told him that I don't need the change. He smile and was very happy about it. On my part, it feels good to make someone happy even for just CAD $3.

Some days the driver will lose at the end of the day (example: bad weather means fewer people standing / walking outside needing a taxi), and others he might make bank (a bit like farming). None of that (IMO) justifies cheating foreigners (which puts the Racism card in play) or anyone else. I would much rather the driver negotiate up front a higher-than-meter fare, or refuse to take me, rather than be surprised with cheating. I also recognize the culture in Phils is immature, and often condones lying / cheating; many people here would take the driver's side, hence a cultural divide.

I've had this happen to me a couple times, the driver doesn't turn on the meter after I've asked him to. So when we get to the drop off point I get out of the car and he usually complains. One time I called over the Police Officer on the street corner and told him, the driver didn't turn on the meter. The Police Officer told me if there is no fare, you don't have to pay! Hard lesson to learn for the driver but I told him to turn on the meter.You are lucky that the police officer was honest and said the correct thing. He could have joined in with the cabbie to shake you down for 500 or 1,000 by saying that it was a crime to leave a cab without paying or something like that then sharing the "no receipt on the spot fine" with the cabbie.

That is why I almost always have them use the meter or take a grab, less room for argument.

So I showered and rushed outside to see what I could find as this was my first time in Phils. It had started to pour and I was forced to huddle under some street corner shelter on the corner near Filling Station. This is in that Makati place. Maybe I'm posting in the wrong spot. I've heard that the Washington Post is maintaining some sort of lie / fabrication count, and it ought to give us pause as to our own institutional maturity.

I agree that there is a sort of cultural divide in the moment when we Westerners experience these situations. When I am in one of these situations I get hooked by the cabbie trying to avoid using the meter when he and I both know the LTFRB rules. My own cultural "bias" toward lawfulness is why I get hooked. At that point I feel irritated and sometimes decide to teach the guy a lesson, such as screwing him out of the additional 20 pesos he would have gotten from my tip if he had simply turned on the meter. Other times I am willing to negotiate, recognizing that he may be facing problems with traffic or no return fare. A couple of days ago, my car was in the shop, and here in Davao, where I normally drive my own car, I took a taxi. The taxi driver was charming, spoke excellent English, and was fun to engage in conversation. I asked him how much he had to pay each day to rent the taxi he drove. The response was either Php1,500 or 1,800, I don't remember. I asked how much each day he spent on fuel, to which he responded Php1,000. So, before a taxi driver starts his day, he knows that the first Php2,500-2,800 in fares will just go to cover his expenses. I then asked him how long he worked each day and he told me that he started at 5 AM and finished at 8 PM, every day.

Yes, cheating foreigners is morally wrong, but try to put the acts into context.

Taxi is not an option if you want to get picked up in a residential neighborhood where cabs generally do not go to drop off people. Flagging one down on the street is impossible. If airport or major hotel pickup, cabs are a viable option and usually quickly available.

When I leave my block, there is often cabs arriving with a passenger and I can just get in right away. The cabbie is happy to have a fare with no dead time.

However to leave a place where taxi's don't go like to pick up a girl from her house to bring her here, Grab is the best option. Grab also lets me pay on my account so no issues sending cab fare to the girl ahead of time, and you can track her movements en route. I like to go downstairs and help them get through security.

Filipinos are good at organizing "people's organizations" that represent their various marginal interest groups: tricycle drivers, jeepney drivers, street-side fruit vendors, and so on. There are even some umbrella organizations around Manila that lobby politicians on behalf of these little organizations. But the general outcome is that, because the individuals in these groups are poor, any gains from their organizing are marginal at best, keeping them from backsliding further. Real power is in the hands of several dozen families who control provincial property and metro economic interests. Taxi drivers simply lack the clout to change their circumstances, and nobody else is interested in fixing these things for them.

I've asked many drivers the costs for renting / operating for the day. Some days the driver will lose at the end of the day (example: bad weather means fewer people standing / walking outside needing a taxi), and others he might make bank (a bit like farming). None of that (IMO) justifies cheating foreigners (which puts the Racism card in play) or anyone else. I would much rather the driver negotiate up front a higher-than-meter fare, or refuse to take me, rather than be surprised with cheating. My suggestion: keep quiet, and at the end of the ride hand the driver a reasonable fare, and walk away. He's not going to dick over any of that. I've been using this tactic for several years now. No driver is going to call the police (after not using his meter), and he can't get another fare without you departing his vehicle (if he won't take your reasonable amount, he can't get on to his next customer). He may be disappointed to get 200 instead of 500, but he lives to fight another day (fare). If I could not get a cup of coffee because all the coffee shops were full of people buying lower priced coffee, I would make the decision to either pay double at a place I could get into or going without the coffee.

I'd prefer to pay double for my Grab rides if I could get a booking every try. I have spend longer in trying to make a booking than it would take to walk and we are talking about a 4 to 5 km ride. More than an hour in the app trying to get the ride booked, then about a 30 minute wait for the driver to show up hoping all the time that he was not going to cancel before he got there. (Would have just about made it there and back on foot by the time Grab got me there.).

I have platinum status on Grab which is supposed to prioritize my rides.

The problem is the taxi board is limiting drivers to 65,000 for all cabs plus grab. With about 10,000 licensed drivers no longer active and no purging of the inactive drivers, we get a situation with insufficient numbers of drivers for the demand. The solution is to either expand the number of available drivers and or increase the prices to encourage drivers to work more and fewer people to take rides.

At what point over p50 do you not put up with that? If the driver makes his normal profit today driving his cab, and overcharges half a dozen fares today by p300 each, then in one day he is earning 3 day's profit (is my math off). The drivers I was speaking of weren't negotiating up front extra pay for more difficult traffic (traffic was light), they were simply scamming by not turning on the meter and asking an exorbitant price later. Drivers rarely say anything when I hand them a reasonable fare. In fact, the ripoff situation for me seems to happen much less frequently than it does for other gents. Other than the recent set, its rare for me that a driver (anywhere in Phils) has pulled this (many years ago this was fairly common).

There is a trusted system in place already: the metered fare (with addition for traffic and such) which is known up front. In an earlier post GE explained the substantial daily lease that drivers pay to owners, in addition to paying for the fuel they consume. So profit for the fleet owners turns only indirectly on the individual fare rates. More directly, their profit turns on the daily lease rate that they charge to the drivers. So the politics about fares affects the drivers more directly than the owners, and, as I suggested earlier, the drivers, as poor people, don't heft very much clout in changing the system.

There are Filipinas that are clearly setup in the traditional way of western prosti. Then there are the part-time freelancers that go with foreigners knowing that they will get some reward. Further still are the Filipina that will not consider themselves as being paid for sex but are happy knowing that they get extra cash for their family, study, house etc.

Business owners who rip off others for a living don't tend to be the most humanistic of people. It's not out of the realm of possibilities for something similar to happen in the Philippines for even less, especially if someone attempts to just walk away as you suggest. After all the murder rate per 100,000 people in Thailand is a relatively high 3. 24 while in the Philippines it's a whopping 11.32!

One of the many reasons I visit the Philippines less than any other country in Southeast Asia (except Brunei) even though I'm a short flight away is stuff like this. Some Bangkok taxis try it on, but you can always find a legit driver quickly. In a place like Manila they base their life around ripping people off. It's disheartening and disgusting.

So the politics about fares affects the drivers more directly than the owners, and, as I suggested earlier, the drivers, as poor people, don't heft very much clout in changing the system.If they don't have a boss and work for a wage they're independent contractors. That is, they're small business owners. Doesn't matter if they rent tools. Construction guys often rent tools too, like heavy machinery when they need it. They can't buy it so they rent. They're small business owners, not big business. Still business though.

Small business owners don't have much clout, just like homeless people and the unemployed. They are individualistic, not united, and incapable of shutting anything down. Yesterday was my last night in Manila. I was staying at the Manila Hotel in Malate and it was boring as bat shit. It is one of the two nightlife spots where I mainly draw my girls when I am in Metro Manila. The other is Burgos Street of course. Like the bar scene in BKK or Pattaya or anywhere else, it is all about the top 10% of girls that are available to you in any location on any given night. Tinder's system might have picked that up, or any of your Tinder girls might have reported it (she would run the same risk of a ban).

I had a few hours to kill around the Malate area and wandered around for a bit. I cam across Ritz Spa, a big upscale massage parlour.
