Who extends the mongering scene in Korea soon.While I'm far from being an expert, I will suggest that the kinds of things you express an interest in will be difficult to find in Korea--if not EXTREMELY difficult--unless, that is, you have exceptionally good connections.

This is in some ways still a very closed society, where foreigners are not always accepted. It's also a society which manages to be simultaneously promiscuous and puritanical--think Victorian Britain and you'll just about get what I'm driving at.

Also, just to complicate things, the crackdown on prostitution is, by all reports, real. Some months ago it was a Japanese tourist caught, literally with his pants down, in one of the big Seoul RLDs. The Japanese embassy was informed, and his name (as I recall) was splashed all over the newspapers.

Not that prostitution isn't still thriving here: it's just mutating a bit. And making itself that much harder for the foreigner to find. Or rather, you'll very easily find the unappealing sorts (snaggle-toothed ajummas who will give you a quick HJ in a seedy "barber shop"), but might have to look a bit harder for the good stuff.

I've been here nearly five years. While that doesn't make me an expert, by any stretch of the imagination, I'll share with you what I can.

The sign which you describe (three flaming red lines) does not necessarily indicate anything to do with sex. Typically, I think, it indicates a sauna, which may be purely legitimate (read, nothing sexual in nature on offer). Otherwise, it may simply indicate a yeogwan (cheap hotel) which is equipped . . . er . . . with hot water. A bit of an anachronism, I think: South Korea was a third-world country just a few short decades ago, the kind of place where hot water was something to advertise as a kind of luxury.

If you're looking for sex in Seoul:

Best bets used to be the RLDs (red light districts). I always found Yongsan to be the best. Go to Yongsan station (easily findable on any subway map), and directly opposite the station you will find a huge, pink-lit RLD. Most of the women won't take you if you aren't Korean or at least Korean-looking; however, down the side alleys which are easily locatable all around, you could find women who would happily service you. I say "could," and not "can," because the crackdown which has been in effect for just over a year now means that RLDs are not normally running at full capacity. Many of the houses are at least temporarily closed, and some very likely permanently closed. So you may find Yongsan and other RLDs in Korea to resemble ghost towns. They've been intimidated by the local police into all but closing down.

I had some great times at Yongsan RLD in years past. More recently, sad to say, the crackdown on prostitution here in Korea has made visiting such places a risky business. If the police show up, you may very well be in trouble. I DON'T MEAN TO BE A FEAR-MONGER, just a realist. RLDs here, in my own recent experience, have been heavily police-patrolled. Live dangerously if you want to.

One place which seems to have escaped the crackdown so far (though no one seems to know why!) is Hooker Hill in Itaweon. Took me a long time, originally, to find this place, but I'll give you simple instructions. Look for the mosque at the top of one of Itaewon's hills. Unfortunately, many of these bargirls will attempt to cheat you--if past experience is anything to go by. Good comments on the Military Police checks on Hooker Hill. They can be a pain-in-the-ass, although it's mainly just an inconvenience if you're a civilian.

If the Hill is still your preference. And despite everything, it still has its gems and a bargin or two. You can avoid the military by going before 9PM and after 1AM. The patrols officially start at 7PM, but the guys doing them don't make it to the Hill until later. They officially stop 1 hour after curfew (usually 1AM), but by 1: 00-1: 30AM, most of the guys doing the patrols are just looking to get out of there as soon as possible. Especially when it's cold.

Many of the clubs don't bring their "A" girls on until after 10PM, so you aren't missing much during "Primetime" anyway. For day time action you can hit the Royal/VIP, Fantasy (with the ever popular Miya), and a few non-Hill clubs like Nymph and the Cabin. When I go to 588, Miari Texas, a massage parlor or barbershop, I bring my foreign friends along. And I would kindly tell the mamasans to accept my friends. And they will (especially is I am their loyal customer).

I've heard of the existence of a few MP and BBS type joints around the airport village, but if I were you, I would consider staying in Seoul (about and hour's bus/limosine ride from Incheon) so you have more option. The place outside of Seoul is called Yong Ju Gol. That place is so tricky to find. It is around 40 kilometers north of Seoul. It is near a U.S. military base (I forgot the name of the base).

Yong Ju Gol used to be the best red light district but it has gone downhill. I do not recommend it. I prefer 588 and Miari.

If the Ajuma or girl grabs a Korean customer, 9 out of 10 times, he will yell back and say "NO!!! or LEAVE ME ALONE" in a very rude way. But since you remained calm, they were a bit surprised.

So this is what you can do to avoid the hassle from the ajuma and girls.

I think one good idea is for you to buy a small English-Korean conversation pocketbook. Do not buy a very nice one. Just a cheap and simple pocketbook is fine.

"Asian" means almost nothing here in Korea, just as it means next to nothing in Japan.

If anything, Koreans, like the Japanese, would like to see themselves as "a race apart," ie, physically, geographically in Asia, but somehow above it, or at least apart from it.

It's almost comical finding myself having to teach American-produced textbooks with references to "Asian-Americans." Koreans simply don't connect with this idea. They no more identify themselves as "Asian" than do, let's say, Siberian Russians. It's a politically correct imposition from outside on people who see themselves as being . . . well . . . Korean.

If anything, the bias against OTHER ASIANS is even stronger here than against whites. As a Korean coworker remarked to me a year or so ago, when I commented to her on Korean racism, "Don't worry: You're white. We only look down on blacks and other Asians."

This is a very sad state of affairs, as should go without saying. The notion of one big human family, rooted in science as much as it is in common sense and basic decency, has a long way to go before gaining common currency here in Korea.

Meanwhile, to all the many, MANY Koreans who have asked me, over the years, "Do you like Korean women?"

My answer is as follows:

I like women.

The term 'Asian' is an arbitrary distinction that includes so many varied countries and cultures it is difficult to see what 'Asians' have in common aside from geographic connectedness. Afterall, I dont identify myself as a North American simply because I am from Canada.

Some of the barbershops offer this but then some don't. Some are just straight rub 'n' tug places. Just head to Yongsan or Miari during non peak hours. But the BBS scene here you're likely to get some 40 year old hag. Pay $70 for some no nonsense full service from a nice 20ish type.

I would highly recommend Sinbad which is right of Sinsa Station exit 6 or Cima which is at the Hilltop Hotel. I also recommend that you go after midnight..closer to 1:00am. This is usually the final rotation for most of the working girls. So if you drink enough with her and show her a good time, after you get to the room, they will stay with you all night. Meaning, that if she likes you ,she won't leave after 45 minutes and since she doesn't have to work anymore they will usually stay with you til morning. I will be in Seoul next week for about 1 week. I'm staying at the Marriott and was looking for some help. I go to KTV's about 2 or 3 times a week for business. I would highly recommend Sinbad which is right of Sinsa Station exit 6 or Cima which is at the Hilltop Hotel. I also recommend that you go after midnight..closer to 1:00am. This is usually the final rotation for most of the working girls. A white, milky discharge is a sympton of both diseases, although it's more common to see it manifest in men than women (although they are just as infected). The symptom is also commonly seen with yeast infections...something that Miya's had frequents bouts with.

However I managed to get to yongsan (which wife likes to explore electronics market for hours).

Besides the electronics market I checked the many times described RLD with the windows.

Easy to find. Just in front of the station across the street.

1st surprise: Going there at a Sunday around 4-5 pm I expected almost nothing. But about 20-25% of the windows were on business.

2nd surprise: the quality was much better then expected. One 10 and the others on average 7.5 besides only about real 2 downturns. Did not expect this as I considered the RLD as the bottom end for Seoul (do I need to adjust my scale here?).

Was approached intensively, no hesitation except in the wider street in the middle of the RLD.

Question: Logically according to this bahave, is this what you experts count as the A-Row?

Anyhow the 'A-Row?' was much less busy then the narrow areas around.

I got quoted 7kW or 6kW with the majority quoting 7kW. Some seemed to have 'better english skills' *smile* adding the word 'good service'.

All said that short time is 15 min.

So guys, even if I dont expect much and usually I am willing to pay more for better quality and longer time, I will need to try it at least once. So please some hints. Of course I expect 'very limited' hit or miss and generally a 'no frills' action. But:

- What is the effective average time. Is there a chance to extend the time if I e.g. manage to delay the shot a little, or will they kick you out counting the seconds.

Just read the thread from Poon Hunter and there is truth in those words - with regards to the Hill. Buyer Beware.

I always WAS a visitor to the Hill but only visited the Nymph Club and this cute little petite beauty named Hee Joo was the only services I preferred. So Friends, yesterday I started my Seoul experience 2: Went to Yongsan RLD.

I am westerner and have been many times to Korea and several times to RLDs and usually not been allowed to go in.

At busy times A and B rows even stop coin-clicking on window when I or other foreign man walking past. Some of them pull curtains closed when they see us. Okay - I am not Brad Pitt but I am not old ugly man. I am certainly better looking than many Koreans who do go in and I do not stink of stale cigarette breath.

They do not like to entertain foreign men because they fear AIDS because their pimps tell them about the AIDS that ALL foreign men especially African men have AIDS.

The girls think that their usual Korean customer will not take them if they go with foreigners so they prefer to wait for Koreans. It is nothing about inferiority of the men. Absolutely.

Several times I have gone to A rows when it is quiet not busy - early in week or maybe very late at night (or early morning haha!).

When girl sees nobody is watching they grab my arm and pull me in and push me to back of house quickly. No problem to serve me as long as no Korean men can see. After the deed they check again outside looking if any Korean men watching before sending me out quickly.

Some houses have the side door or door at back so you can go out at side or back and nobody see you. That is easy for girl to make sure regular customer will not see.

For me it is simple. They prefer not to take foreigner if that will spoil the business but they want the money more, so pick your time and your place and it will be fine.

Our friend Cocoroso is part right and part wrong. Koreans are definitely racist. But the racism can be overcome by grooming and language skills, courtesy and persistence. If you get treated like rubbish, you're not trying hard enough. I don't get treated like rubbish and in many places in Korea I am treated quite well. Including the red light districts where so many of you are getting the cold shoulder.

If racism is part of the environmental conditions, make an adjustment. I've been to "booking" clubs, including one in Kangnam called "Don't Tell Mama". This one is really great for picking up hot housewives.
