How widely is the term "sexual services" going to be interpreted? Will it be limited to intercourse or have a more broad definition to include all the other things we enjoy?
My guess is the former so they can maintain the appearance of cracking down and at the same time do as little harm as possible to what everyone knows is a sizeable part of the economy.

Well just adding a report about my trip to Yeung-deung-po RLD to see my Hyun-Ju (I'm her regular), she called me yesterday to see what I was up to, and told me that she won't be around no more due to this stupid prostitution law thing that goes into effect starting TONITE at 12. So this morning (I usually visit in the morning so I can aviod the crowd and maybe even police this time) around 9ish, I went to visit her at RLD and she was on her way to hospital to pick up her check up result (for STD's and AIDS). So I gave her a ride to the hospital.She was telling me in the car that starting 23rd, all the shops are going to be shut down basically.even tho there are going to be a few shops open late at nite or very early in the morning for the customers and to avoid police. But she said that she has seen a lot more police around the area and there are always two more three that monitor the section. Especially after this crackdown, all the debt that girls has on the owner of shops are going to become illegal funds, so the girls do NOT have to pay it off. So a lot of the girls are going to quit or run away or something.
(You know how system works, right? Girls need money, goes to RLD to borrow money from the shop owners, and instead work for them so the owner can take percentage of what they earned till they pay off what they owe. But since most of them are staying there, all the extra costs such as room, food, cosmetic. etc. can be added to their debt a lot faster than what they can pay off. That's why the girls cannot never ever get out of these places.)
So we went to hospital, picked up her result, which was clean.she has been in this industry for only about a year or so she's pretty new. Good for her that she's clean.
Anyway she said she was going to Pusan (very south of Korea, about 5 hours away from seoul)to live with her family and start studying again so I won't be seeing her as much so I figure better fuck her brains out for the last time, which i did. WARNING: fellow mongerers, around the RLDs, there are thugs not associated with the RLD that hang around the outskirts looking for chumps. For some reason I listened, and it sounded like a good deal. I thought, if it's off location, then the overhead must be less, therefore it would cost me less! After like a 30 min ride, we got to this place. Looked kinda seedy, but again, low overhead. Went down a flight of stairs, and it looked like a club. Got put in a room, a low 20 ish girl walked in, some fruit and a bottle of whiskey was brought in, which was part of the negotiatied 60k won, including the girl, so I thought. The girl drank like a fish, and something didn't seem right. They kept bringing in more bottles of this whiskey, but the bottles didn't even seem new. I told the girl lets go to the room. Moral of the story. DO NOT STRAY FROM THE BEATEN PATH. If you meet anyone that promises you action other than the public places, walk away.

Sorry if I'm a bit off topic here. Since there's no section about Seoul/Korea Hotel, I guess this might be the best place to post.
I will be making my way to Seoul this coming October and these are my options for place to stay. My last stay was at the Renaissance and it was a bit underwhelming in comparison to Bangkok's finests.
I'm looking for the best place to stay in Kangnam-area. It should also have the best chance to impress the women I'll be inviting over as guest. The bonus would be if it has happening club like the Grand Hyatt.
1. Amiga
Like: For Executive Class, free mobile phone rental, airport pick-up, driving range, sauna
Dislike: No Club, Fitness Center not as nice as the others
2. Oakwood
Like: Walking distance to Coex, Shopping, Use of Galleria Fitness, Roomy, sauna
Dislike: Lobby, No Club, no driving range
3. Ritz-Carlton
Like: sauna, nice spa, Nice Fitness, Nice Lobby, certain room has laptop available, driving range

4. Intercontinential Coex

I think you hit all the major hotels on the main strip of Kangam. I believe the Grand is more expensive than the COEX Intercontinental, which I guess would make it more impressive. IMHO the Grand has the best location of all in Kangnam, especially if you have the money to spend on the girl. Good places next door to shop (Hyundai dept) and close to City Air Terminal, subway, etc. If you're alone, it's also great to just walk the COEX mall and gawk at all the pretty gals. The Grand gets my vote.
The Shilla isn't in the Kangnam area but it has the most impressive exterior. If you're trying to impress a girl, I would think that's the place due to the castle-like surroundings and separate wedding facilities. The Shilla has larger rooms for executives too. The drawback is that you really can't easily walk anywhere. It's not too far from Kangnam.
Personally I don't like the Grand Hyatt but I think it's mostly due to its proximity to Itaewan. I've never stayed there and only visited it. It's nice inside (and very expensive) but that's about it. If you want more of a western atmosphere (drinks, food) then it's good. NOTE: The food and drink at both Intercontinentals tends towards Korean and not western if I remember correctly.

I really liked the Oakwood. IT was like having your own apartment. IT has a kitchen, LR, BR, dressing area and huge bathroom with a steamroom feature. It is also convenient to the airport bus and the underground mall.

Roundtrip to Bangkok is about 600,000 - 700,000 give or take depending on various factors.
As for the crackdown, the double barber poles are still spinning in my neighborhood. I think only the major districts have been hit.
What are the women doing? Anyone's guess. Good idea might be to go to hotel nightclubs, etc. looking for freelancers. Hard to crack down on them. Maybe there'll be a larger number of women at these place in the coming weeks.

No doubt the general crackdown will subside in a month or so.
But I've just been to the Yongsan area, and a new mega mall complex is opening up at the Yongsan station, right infront of the redlight district. The theatre attached to there will open up in the beginning of october also. As well as an e-mart soon afterwards.
I can't but imagine that that would affect the business at the yongsan redlight. Bad business for the e-mart, theatres, and the big name brands to have half clad gals soliciting while couples and kids goto the mall, hmm. Oh there is 588 I forgot.
Anyways, also saw that real estate offices opened up at the block where the redlight district is, so we might see a re-imaging of the whole area.

For those who never been to Yongsan RLD, here is the map for you.
Yongsan is very easy to reach with the public transportation, especially subways. It can be reached with Subway Line #1 (Black) or Line #4 (Blue). Figure out the subway map and get on either line.
If you come on Line #1, get off at the Yongsan Stn , which is 2 stations south of the Seoul Stn. Just follow the other ppl (only 1 exit) and, when you step out of the station, there will be a big open ground. Cross the ground, cross the street, then just around the corner you will find your that familiar Red Light.
Total distance from station exit to the RLD is less than 100M.
The route via Line #4 is much easier. Target station is ShinYongSan ("shin" in front of "YongSan" means "NEW" in Chinese), get off, exit 3 is where you are heading. If you can see the land-bridge you are on the right track. Go straight ahead, then make a right turn at the corner, then just a few more steps will take you there. Less than 50M in this case.
If you stay in the downtown Seoul, then the total time to get to Yongsan RLD is less than 30mins from your hotel. And on the map, I marked the Police Box, just in case you run into something unacceptable while you can complain/report to them, hehe.... Remember ppl here is co-existing, so use your brain not just penis.

Well I read in the news today that if a foreigner is caught in a sting at a sex place. They are deported. YOUCH! No blowjobs for me for awhile then.

the double spinning barber pole places are basically fronts for various services. it's really hit and miss.
prices can vary from 60,000 to 110,000.
services can vary from simple hj, to fs including bbbj. (can also get a 'no foreigners' at the door)
and the woman can vary from good looking 20's to hideous 40's or 50's.
my advice is to avoid these places unless you have specific info about a particular place. (i've never actually been inside one of these places. i'm citing this info from a very reliable source.)
my observation is from the outside. they are rep001tered throughout the city. they have usually two or three set of double spinning barber poles side by each. and they are almost always in the basement.
about the crackdown,
how is everybody so sure that it's only gonna be one month? it don't think there's ever been a crackdown of this magnitude. it seems to be serious enough to be long term.

The roadblock checking for drunk drivers up near Indian Joe's has been operating for about a month now and is unrelated to the prostitution crackdown. Until a week ago, the girls at Indian Joe's and those other three or four places were completely unfazed by the police presence.
As for the cops near In And Out, there has been a pretty constant police presence along that entire street ever since that Korean hostage was murdered in Iraq. Again, I don't think it has anything much to do with the current state of affairs but obviously the police are milking the extra benefit of making the mongers nervous.
Overall I would say the 9pm USFK curfew is affecting people's nerves and business in Itaewon far more than the crackdown. The military police are harrassing the shit out of everyone since the curfew affects pretty much anyone even remotely connected to the US army.
And since we're on the subject of crackdown, are there any Cabaret Voltaire fans out there?

Update on the Gov. Crackdown on the sex industry.
The Chusok Holidays put everything into a slow motion, and the same applied to the Sex industy. Most of the mongering destination were closed during the holidays, and probably to the end of this week. They are just watching whos going to be the first victim of the govement propaganda.
As you expect, the police began to advertize the number of punts they arrested, and the every report I read - by the locals - says that the mongering would be *VERY* difficult next few weeks. Stay away from the well-known beaten path for the time being.
The focus of the crackdown is to get rid of any (pseudo) sex slave scene in Korea. So, use it to your advertange. They are after the organized sex trade - this list goes like Anna, KTV, MP, Turkish Bath, RLDs, BBS, etc- , then you should focus on the Freelancers instead.
Itaewon is not my favorite destination, but seems relatively safe. Delievery Girl should not be a problem if you don't care exposing where you are. The best bet would be the internet freebies.
Koreans expect this state will last at least a month or so. Be relaxed and be keen to the change at the same time.
Again stay away from the RLDs discussed here. They are the main targets of this crackdown.

I feel it's appropriate, in light of the current crackdown, and the long-term negative prospects for the "semi-legitimate" sex industry in Korea, to point out that there is a rather bold alternative to mongering than hanging around Seoul and scamming for freelancers.
That alternative is Angeles City, Phillipines. I've been there many times from Seoul, so this is an informed opinion. I do almost all of my mongering there, and haven't had any troubles yet -- in fact, I would live there if there were any decent jobs.
Both major airlines (KAL, Asiana) and a small regional carrier (Cebu Pacific) fly there on Friday nights. There are several return flights on Sundays, and one early Monday morning. There are also daily flights back and forth during the week. During non-peak season (non-peak for Koreans, that is, which is basically now until the Christmas season), you can get a flight for about W250,000 through a travel agent. During peak season, like during Chuseok or other long vacation weekends, be warned that it can rise up to W500,000. You can fly to Manila and take a 2-hour taxi ride (a little pricey, about W30,000) to Angeles, or fly direct to Angeles for a little more. Either way, you can arrange to be there on Friday and Saturday night, and most of Sunday.
While there, decent hotels (no stars, of course, but about as clean and roomy as a motel in Korea) are from W20,000 to 30,000 a night. Food is mostly Western (the variety is amazing; southern brunches, real chili, tacos, burritos, cheap steaks, real philly cheesesteaks, meaty spaghetti, and on and on), and costs about W5,000 for a huge portion and a beer.
During the day, there isn't much to do except nurse your hangover, recover your strength, hit some of the afternoon bars, golf, or lounge around the pool or bar (and play pool for less than W1,000 a game). Of course, you won't be seeing much daylight, because....
As for mongering, there are about 50-60 bars, each with 20-50 dancers. It is strip club style; you buy San Miguel (local beer) for W1,500, ladies drinks for W3,000, and there is generally no rush (occasionally they can be pushy, but you can say no easily as Filipinos are a friendly and relaxed people). You make your choice. A bar fine for the night is W25,000 (!), and this generally includes once before bed, and once in the morning, although this is negotiable (the bars, all of which are run by expat Europeans, do not coerce or pressure the girls). Cialis and Viagra, and herbal alternatives, are readily available, and much cheaper than in Korea. Most girls are pretty shy in bed, which turns me on. You get a great GFE from most of the girls, who are very friendly, playful, and talkative (except for the shy ones or the newbies).
Filipinas are shorter (average height 5'1"), darker, and don't have as fine facial features as Koreans. They tend to look like Mexicans or South Americans, with some Thai or Chinese mixes thrown in, as they are a mix between indigenous peoples and Spanish. They speak Tagalog, but English is an official language, and the average Filipino speaks better than a Korean English major. They have beautiful skin, and tight bodies. There is a much higher ratio of large (in comparison to frame), firm breasts and tight asses than in Korea. Of course, tastes vary.
The best part, though, is that the atmosphere is extremely different from Korea. Filipinos are open, relaxed, friendly, a little naive, definitely not as aggressive and serious and cold like Koreans can sometimes be. The customers are 95% expats, either retired, running businesses there, or visiting. Everything is geared toward the foreigner. You just feel all the stress that you didn't know you had in Korea melt away in a bliss of alcohol, eye candy, and sex. You may, in fact, call in sick the first weekend, extend your plane ticket, and not come back for a week.

I'm putting most of the information together in one place because I've spent hours finding all the relevant facts about a new destination, and I thought this would make things easier for casual viewers. It's not for everyone, and you'd have to check the pictures (which don't encompass all the beauty that is the Filipina; if I can find a scanner, I'll post some nice ones) and read the reports to decide for yourself, but few people directly compare the two cultures.
There are many wonderful aspects about Korean culture and women, but there are just as many plusses for the foreign monger in the Philippines. I would like to point out that Koreans are considered foreigners there, as it is obvious from the skin and body type (height, build), and we are certainly welcome there (although some girls have had bad experiences with somewhat abusive or condescending Korean men). Filipinas (female for Filipino) love foreigners, and are genuinely happy just making their half of the bar fine (US$10 a day is a great wage in the Philippines) -- although they would love a foreign boyfriend.

For longer stays, figure about W100,000-150,000 per day (including hotel, meals, barhopping, and a barfine). Compare that to W60-70,000 for the RLD, or W100,000+ for Hooker Hill (depending on the night), and you get a shitload of beers, bikini clad girly shows, a great day-relaxing/night-partying atmosphere, a hotel with a pool, and a short vacation to a warmer climate thrown in for the airfare.
I'm just adding my two cents because I learned of Angeles from a friend, brushed up on it through this forum, and would like to pass the torch on my favorite mongering destination in Asia. I love Korean women, but mongering is so much less fun here than it is there. To sum up, Korean women are better girlfriends (taller, more educated, etc.), but Filipinas are better dates (for those of you who wonder about the whole Catholic thing, think back to your youth -- who were the sluttiest girls in high school? That's right, Catholic school girls!).

Go to China. A few reasons if I may.
1) Chinese women look like Korean women, especially the ones from up north. The younger girls, by that I mean in their early 20's, are usually 5'5" and taller. If you have a preference for fair skinned Asian women, there's 700 million of 'em in China.
2a) Chinese KTV is about as close to Korean Room Salon as you can get, but a whole lot cheaper and in some ways better. In Dongguan, at a 5 star hotel with rooms nicer than any Room Salon in Korea and I've been to some really nice ones, a bottle of Chivas costs 600RMB, which is about $73, or 84,000W. If you buy 2 bottles, you usually get one on the house. You don't even have to drink whiskey, you can drink beer or wine all night if you want to save a couple of RMB. You tip the girls 200Y which is about 21,000W. Most of the better KTV's even have Korean songs. Oh yeah, a night in a 5 star hotel in Dongguan costs about 400Y, which is about 62,000W. When I say 5 star, I mean 5 star, the rooms are at least as nice as Lotte or Ritz Carlton. If you want to spend the night with the girl, it's usually 1000RMB for the girl, or about 135,000W. Did I mention that KTVs at 5 star hotels have around 500-600 girls to choose from? That's not a typo.
2b) In any large city, there are a number of 3-4 star hotels that have KTV with Chosunjok girls. These girls are ethnic Koreans from up north in Yeonbyeon who speak Korean, although with a slight accent. If you simply must have Korean girls, you can go to one of these, but the selection is often not as good since the KTVs tend to be smaller. On the plus side, since these are usually at the middle range hotels, it's cheaper and they carry Korean whiskey; Dimple, Imperial, Lancelot, if that's your preference.
3) Flights to China are cheap and short depending on your destination. I'm in Shenzhen so I fly to Hong Kong so that would cost a little more, but not too much more.
4) If you like golf, there about a dozen golf courses all about an hour from where I am. Shenzhen also has Mission Hills, a course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Mission Hills alone has 180 holes. There are so many golf courses in China that the government had to outlaw building new ones. Some of the golf courses have girls for caddies. You know what that means.
5) There are massage places galore. A lot of them, like Jia Hua Grand Hotel, offer services that are comparable if not better than the better massage places in Korea. If you just want regular sport massage, that's like 30Y for an hour, which is about 3100W.
6) If you want cheap bang bang 30 minute sex ala 588, China has that too, usually around 160RMB, or 20,000W.
7) There's other stuff to do besides just mongering. You can do business, sightsee, go to museums, concerts, sample different Chinese cuisine (you know what I mean).
I walked through Sillim Station district tonight and all seemed normal. The an-ma's, ee-yong-won's, and dal-la-ju-jeong's all were open. I think it is just the main RLD's that have been effected.

Thought I would post a quick report on my Seoul adventures.
Didn't do enough research before I went so more fool me. But I was more than happy with Friends, which I found out about on here. 3. The RLD's have been considerably downsized in the recent past because of problems with the illegal foreign sex trade, where many of the women are smuggled in from southeast asia, Russia, and China. Barber shops also used to be good places to go for a quicky; however, most of them cut your hair, bill you and get mad when you even bring up the topic. What the? These shops used to be filled with women who did not want to register in the sec industry, so they fronted as hair stylist. Now they use this old trick to get customers for a legitimate business and stiff the next dumb ass for a hair cut.
Iteawon has girls walking the streets and in the clubs; however, there not much to look at. If you are not careful, you'll rub the 2" inches of freaking make up off of their faces.

Save your money and move further west or south to Sanghai, China or Taipei, Taiwan, where the women are about as beautiful as Korean women and a lot more receptive to your sexual needs. Besides, what you will really blow after all is said and done is about about $100 - $150 USD to get your Nuts off in any one of Seouls 3 primary RLDs ($300 USD for the high end girls in hotel lounges and men's bars) and probably, $35- $60 USD in China. The reason so many recent Korean men are marrying out of their status has to do with the male to female ratio in the country. Korea, like a lot of other Asian countries, prizes sons. In the 70's and 80's it was quite common for a lot of people to abort daughters. It's kind of sick, but some people would have constant abortions until they have a son. Well, that's starting to come to roost now. The country has something like a 6/4 male to female ratio. That means 33% of the male population won't be able to find a mate. It also means that females can be pickier about their mates. All that basically translates to is that there is a shortage of women in the country. A lot of the farm boys have taken to travelling to Yanji (Yongil) in China to find wives since all the come of age girls have left the farms for the bright lights of the cities.
I'm Korean and I love Korea, but it's getting almost ridiculous over there. I kind of outgrew the 588 scene a few years ago. The 20-30 minute bang bang thing just doesn't cut it for me anymore like when I was younger. RS in Korea is like a mindfield. Half the time you don't know if you're getting ripped off or not and so many of them are gang related that you could easily get beat up if you complain about anything. That's without even mentioning the cost of RS. My friend just got back from Korea and he spent over $1000US on booze with 3 other guys. In China, it would be 1/5 of that at a better place with friendlier girls. Men and their families are becoming less superficial and shallow; allowing their sons to marry down - well, maybe not, since most men are actually giving up some of their traditional values in order to hook up with a hot babe and good love for the weenee.

I've read about the abortion issue in Korea. I'm not Korean and I only travel there on business but nothing I've seen among my friends and coworkers would lead me to believe the problem is real yet. There also seems to be plenty of unmarried girls available from 22-33yrs old, and the go-between/semi-arranged marriage technique seems to get guys married by 30yrs old whether they want to or not. From the statistics I've seen, the sex ratio problem is supposed to start hitting about now with guys around 22-26 trying to find girlfriends 18-22. The problem doesn't get real bad for another 5-10yrs since selective abortion didn't take off until the 1980's, and the problem appears to be lessening now.
Now if you're 20-25, then yes you could have a problem. If you're 45 and trying to nail an 18yr old, then yes you could have a problem (but it sounds like fun). Hongdae these days is pretty much like Koreatown in LA or New York -- there are so many Korean Americans, white Americans, black Americans, and Koreans educated overseas (or Koreans who want to go overseas), that English is just as common as Korean. My suggestion to all you foreign mongers in Korea is to remember the three rules of picking up on Korean girls:
1) Learn a little Korean. You'll freak everyone out anytime you bust out in even decently accented Korean. And it impresses the women. Most Korean girls think of English like Americans think of French (ooh, ahh!).
2) Keep it light and playful. This applies, by the way, to women everywhere in the world, but doubly for Korean girls.
3) Be persistent. A strange facet of Korean culture (or at least Seoul culture) is that many girls think that it's better to play hard to get. Whether it really is or not is debatable, but that's how they feel. Most girls who will later enthusiastically sleep with you will first blow you off (and believe me, Koreans girls can be damn cold at first). So try at least twice. (The third try, however, I think is referred to as "sexual harassment.")
As for abortions, Korea is the abortion capital of the world. Think about it -- how many of you guys have been with a girl (freebie, girlfriend, or working girl) who didn't insist on a condom? Many. How many single (not divorced) Korean mothers do you know? None. Abortion is illegal in Korea -- but so is prostitution. Law enforcement is quite...flexible in Korea, you see. Korea has, according to the most quoted estimate, 2 million abortions a year. That's about as many as in the United States. 2 million out of 25 million women. Every year.
Sex related abortions were common for a long time, but a few years ago, they banned doctors from determining the sex of the baby (which reduced the practice, but again, this is Korea, so enforcement and compliance are spotty). It's also true that Koreans emphasize sons less, but they still prefer sons to daughters. The sex imbalance of earlier years is now trickling into clubs and bars. It's bad, but nowhere near as bad as one-child-per-couple China (and it's still pretty easy for a foreigner to get laid there).
Anyway, just remember, it's not too hard to get laid anywhere in Asia. Remember the three rules, grab your balls and squeeze hard every time you feel like chickening out (to make sure they're still there, that is), and go talk to that Korean cutie with the short skirt and the arrogant look.

Anyway, data from 1995 (the most recent I could find for this) show the following for the demographic of over 15 year olds who are unmarried (I guess those 15 year olds would be 24 now):

I visited Seoul in September for a few days on a business trip and wanted to report my findings. My remarks were intended to highlight a few misconceptions that foreigners may have about Koreans. Of course there are going to be Korean girls that don't want anything to do with foreigners. Same with Japan. Same with China. These are all countries that are rich in heritage and tradition. In fact, "foreigners" in this case may very well be a Korean gal not being able to bring home a Japanese boyfriend or Chinese boyfriend. In other words, it has less to do with the color of your skin - this misses the point, rather they have a preference to continuing that tradition.
You will find that same kind of preference whereever you go in the world. Take for instance in America. I have Jewish friends that may or may not date outside the Jewish circle, but when it comes to serious commitment and marriage, their preference is to marry a fellow Jew to carry on the many unique traditions inherent to their heritage that preceded them. I don't think that's wrong, in fact, I see a lot of sense and rationale in their preference to preserve and to continue that heritage - I fully respect that. Indians are very much the same way.
My point it to call that racism is completely misguided.
I've lived and worked abroad in many countries over the years - Europe, Asia and the States - seen and met many people. One thing it seems is universal - showing respect will generally be reciprocated.
Will things change over time in Asia? Most certainly, as things open up, as countries that are internationalizing begin to inter-mingle with other cultures, there will be more experience and understanding. Ignorance abounds whereever one goes, and as a visitor anywhere one goes your experience will leave an impression to those around you. So when protocol calls for good judgement and understanding - doing so helps the next person who comes along - and slowly artificial barriers may (or may not) gradually recede. But even then, it's a safe bet to say that many of the current personal preference will continue to prevail - hey, its a free world.

Foreign Professor Caught with Prostitute On Campus

A visiting professor has been charged with paying for sex and engaging in the act in his apartment, not in the university dormitory as previously reported. According to the Dunsan Police Station in Daejon, the john was recorded three times in a prostitute's client list and was identified as 35-year-old Mr. B, a foreign language lecturer at a university's language center. He called the prostitute three times, on Sept. 14, 18 and 22, to his room at a foreign residents' apartment on campus and paid for the act by credit card.
The university fired Mr. B on Tuesday on the grounds that he acted inappropriately. He has since apologized to the school, saying that he was lonely because he lived alone and he was sorry to have caused the school trouble.

I read the report by Le Baron a couple months ago and I've been dying to visit Korea and O2. Well, I'm finally here on business and I made my visit yesterday. Here are my impressions and notes.
First, so that we're all on the same page and spelling, may I suggest that we use the map location and spelling from this site:

It's been a great resource for me. The map is very large and color coded and in English. Another note, when we mention station exits, lets specify it by naming the station before and after the stop. I think it's easier to locate that way.
Now back to O2.
To get there, take the subway to the Young San station. Its on the dark blue line between the Namyeong and Noryanjin stations. It's a large station within a shopping complex. Just follow the people out. They're all headed to the main junction. You have to walk out of the station and towards the right, over a catwalk and down some stairs out of the shopping complex. If you follow the masses, you will end up at the main junction. If you get lost, try to find the main road and look for the traffic signs. At the junction if you go right, you head towards the Seoul station. If you go left, you will head towards the Wonhyo bridge. Seoul station and Wonhyo bridge are not in the same direction. Head towards the Wonhyo bridge direction. You will pass a large circular building (Emart, Etrade, or something like that). I didn't see a CJ home shopping sign anywhere. Walk about 5-10 minutes and you will see a giant O2 sign on the street and on the building. It is located in the building which also houses a Hyundai dealership, so look for O2 or Hyundai, or ask merchants where the hyundai dealership is. If you are headed towards Wonyho, it will be on the left side of the street. Take the stairs to the basement B2.
Walk in, take off your shoes and get into the slippers provided by O2. Pay the receptionist 160000W and they will count the money and provide you a frequent visitors card. Follow the usher into your private room. I believe there are only 10 rooms at O2. After he escorts you to your room, tell him who you want, or the kind of girl you're looking for. They will try to accomidate, but it's really hit or miss. In your private room you have a sleeping matress, private bathroom, tv, phone, coat rack, and complimentary cigarettes and complimentary sodas in the mini fridge. Some locals I know have said to avoid those types of places (anmas, barbershops, etc...) more so than the RLDs. Also heard from a different Korean friend that in the RLDs you can still get serviced but if there is a raid, the girl will leave the room and you're just supposed to pretend you were sleeping. FYI. Due to the crackdown all RLDS, anmas, barbershops have closed in order not to be caught and charged. I suspect, there are a few shops still open in the shade but if you go there it is too risky so my advice is not to go. The day after visiting O2, I ventured into Miari. Had a great time. Didn't get busted. As you all know, there is a ban in effect. About 95% of the shops in Miari are closed. The 5% which are still open equates to about 2 dozen shops still open for business. Some of the shops are just blatant or oblivious of the ban and are doing business like it's 1994. Some shops are very cloak and dagger with closed curtains and secret knocks on side doors.
Since most people know how to get to Miari, I won't go into the directions. Take the Police exit at the Gireum station. When you're walking down the main street look for the funny blue tarp curtains. You'll see one every couple blocks. Enter through the blue curtains.
If you go at night, there will be almost no light - no shop lights, traffic lights, or corner lights since the ban is in effect. Almost no light whatsoever except for the shops which are still open. There is a serious danger of falling or tripping while walking through the alleys. Allow yourself a couple minutes for your eyes to adjust. If you have poor night vision, I would not recommend visiting Miari at night. You might have to visit during the day.
Although there's the danger of falling and hurting yourself, I don't think there is much danger in getting robbed, or jacked in the dark alleys. I saw a couple old people sitting around. I didnt see any others walking about. When I first walked into Miari, I seriously thought this would be a perfect place to get robbed, but I didn't run into any other people. Plus it would be hard for robbers to operate with the police patrols (more on this later).
My recommendation is to walk around like a tourist who's taking a shortcut through Miari. It's not a crime to walk through a RLD. Then make some mental notes as to which shops you want to visit. Then make another loop or double back to make sure you're not followed. A mamasan told me there are a couple undercover cops patrolling the area. So if you run into another person, he's probably an undercover cop. If you're followed by someone, assume he's a cop and calmly try to loose him through the many side alleys. After you're sure you're not followed or being watched, make your way to the shop you want to visit and walk in. That's where the mental notes come in handy.
I have another approach for entering. Mill around a bit in front of the shop you want to visit and show a little interest in the girls and start walking away slowly. A mamasan will probably walk out after you and mutter under earshot if you're interested in something. Pull over to a side alley and ask the usual questions; who's working, how many girls are working, how much.... If you're happy with her answers, ask if their shop has a side entrance or ask how you can get into the shop without detection. Tell her you don't want to get caught by the police and that you want to make sure there's no one around. Then she'll discreetly lead you to the side or rear entrance. I think most shops have 2-3 exits. Or tell her you'll wait by a door and she can let you in.

I was in Seoul, Pusan and Pohang few weeks ago and enjoyed the sports massage places and few Karaoke places. The Karaoke places are too expensive but the quality is superb, but you have to go with a Korea or you have to speak good Korea to get good treatment. I know that this true especially outside Seoul.
Are all the sports massage places (some are barber shops) in all of Seoul closed? Or are there some in outside Seoul that maybe open.

The trip wasn't a complete waste. They are now back in the newspaper and when I called they offered service but I was too far out of Seoul for them to provide
Ipaywon - I did vist Starbucks on the hill and had a girl named Gina who had a great body, but her attitude sucked. I think you overestimate the intelligence of the average copper in Korea. SEOUL — Nearly 4,500 people have been arrested or charged since South Korean police kicked off a prostitution crackdown one month ago, police officials said Friday.

A taxi driver told me the government had planned to get rid of all RLDs by 2006 anyway, not sure about anmas and barber shops and such. This is just the start i guess. he told me they already have apartment development plans in the works and businesses where RLDs used to be 588 for example. Hopefully things work out because this line of work has been in Korea forever. I highly doubt the crackdown was sparked by the states, they have been planning the crackdown for a while. SEOUL — Nearly 4,500 people have been arrested or charged since South Korean police kicked off a prostitution crackdown one month ago, police officials said Friday.

No one probably really knows what long term effect the crackdown will have, but the short term is definitely hurting businesses on both sides. The local MP blotter report from last week's Post Paper had a story where a GI was observed entering a local Motel with a known prostitute. I have lived in Korea for 3 months during 2003. This is no Thailand or Philippines, although it might have been 20 years ago when the country was still fairly poor.
Korean bars are full of young girls, but they usually don't care for foreigners. Especially if you are older. Many girls are "born again" Christians or divote Buddhists and very conservative. So I went out for hunting myself. It turned out that the Holiday Inn I stayed was very close to RLD Miari, Holiday Inn Seongbuk. It was just 5 mins walk. Yes, the business was slow. But you can still be approached my mamasam and then show you a hidden door to inside. I tried 3 different places. 60000 for one pop. All girls are quite good, if not the best. The service is unrushed but I couldn't speak korean and I was worried about LE.

No need to worry, as certain places are still open for business but just require a little more research (more like word of mouth). I can assure you that although the red light districts might be closed, the massage parlours are indeed open if your willing to shell out a little more cash, especially the Kangnam ones.
My Korean American friend also made a trip to Jang Ahn Dong this last weekend, the infamous massage parlour district, and came home with a smile. I am sure you can find these places so do not be too discouraged.

You learn that great ideas and values have no national boundaries. What is profoundly disturbing is that Korean intellectuals become more xenophobic and nationalistic, and perpetuate the idea that all of Korea's problems are the result of willfulness by foreigners. This is the mark of a scoundrel. Korean society makes a sharp distinction between an individual's inner circle of family, friends and business colleagues, and outsiders. Members of the inner circle must always be treated with absolute respect and courtesy, while strangers are treated with indifference. Korean society is not egalitarian: a person's status is strictly defined in relation to others. How do foreigners fit into this scheme? The simple answer is they don't. Koreans however do want your money but once they get it, you are useless to them. Look at the Japanese that visit Korea. Many Koreans hate the Japanese, but to their faces, they welcome them because they want their money. Behind their backs, many Koreans are backstabbers. Same with visiting the RLD's.
It's strange. Visit Thailand, Philippines and elsewhere and the worst customers I am told constantly are Koreans. Especially the men. They treat others especially the women badly.

The answer is "sorta". All the stuff like ads for massage places, clubs, etc. are in full swing again. Cars are full of them. 588 looked to have action around 7pm Sat but the number of girls was noticeably less. There was a whole line of taxis and cars cruzin thru the alleys. Well I decided to try the massage/An-Ma place recommended by Ball44 in Shillim around 9pm Sunday night. Ball44's directions are very good. I like Jang-An but it's kinda far for me to get to even though I like the "scrub and then full service" there so I was hoping Shillim would be a good replacement. Things were lookin good out of the subway exit. YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — Nearly 400 U.S. servicemembers in South Korea have been punished this year for offenses related to prostitution, and military commanders promise continued efforts to end any activity associated with the sex trade or [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908), the top U.S. officer in South Korea said.
“Zero tolerance means exactly that. We’re not going to tolerate behavior which is dehumanizing, demoralizing and illegal. That’s always been the military’s intent,” U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. Leon J. LaPorte said in an interview last week with Stars and Stripes.
“This whole [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) issue is a terribly tragic series of events that take tremendous advantage of children and women primarily. … Military values are not congruent with any type of interaction with that kind of activity.”
Of the 400 instances recorded between January and September of this year, LaPorte said, most were dealt with through an Article 15, a non-judicial punishment handed down by a unit commander. The punishments, some of which were handed down through courts-martial, were for soliciting prostitutes, breaking curfew or going to an off-limits establishment or area — the latter two being enforcement tools used by USFK to crack down on participation in the sex trade.
“It’s not a problem solely near the bases. We have placed over 800 enterprises off-limits. And some areas, entire zones have been put off limits to USFK personnel because, primarily, it’s an area known for prostitution,” LaPorte said.
“We have Courtesy Patrol and Korean National Police who patrol it, and you never see USFK personnel in these areas, because they realize it.”
“Clearly it is illegal in the Republic of Korea, clearly [it] is against our Uniform Code of Military Justice,” LaPorte said of the sex trade. “It is clearly incongruent with our values as an institution. And it is clearly incongruent with our values as a nation. We’re a nation that prides itself on human rights and treating people with individual dignity and respect, regardless of gender, race, creed or origin.”
LaPorte also dismissed the notion that the military has lately increased its focus on the issue.
“I wouldn’t say that it’s something newly emphasized because it has always been the position of the U.S. military — clearly it’s been the position of this command — that we don’t support this kind of activity,” he said.
“I think worldwide, you’re seeing more emphasis put on [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908), because people now have greater visibility on the fact that it’s the result of international crime syndicates taking human bondage and moving these individuals all around the world and taking advantage of them. And I think the peoples in the civilized world are starting to realize exactly that [and] are asking their governments to stop it.”
LaPorte pointed to recent efforts by South Korea to crack down on the sex trade, which the government has estimated brings in $20 billion a year. Over the past month, Korean police have conducted intense crackdowns on red-light districts.
Ok Jung-hoon, an officer with the Korean National Police’s anti-prostitution team, said nearly 5,000 people had been arrested since enforcement of tougher sex trade laws began last month.
A new report about the KNP efforts was to be released early this week, he said. But according to preliminary figures, the highest number of arrests have come at nightclubs serving as prostitution fronts or brothels; so-called “tea rooms” where sex is bought and sold; massage parlors; private homes; and barber shops, which are notorious in South Korea for providing more than a haircut.
Ok said a number of foreigners had been arrested in the crackdown, but he could not provide specific numbers or nationalities.
Other USFK officials said their efforts included more than public service announcements and warnings.
“There is a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on,” USFK Command Sgt. Major Troy Welch said Friday on his monthly radio program. “There is an increase of courtesy patrols in all entertainment districts. We’re attacking it that way.”
Courtesy patrols and military police are being trained to recognize the signs of [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) and are aggressively searching it out in areas where servicemembers might go, Welch said.
“We don’t have a lot of servicemembers paying for prostitutes, but we don’t want them exposed to it,” Welch said.

There are a lot of great establishments that have no connection whatsoever with [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) or prostitution, and we’re very happy that our servicemembers have those available.”
“We have very strong command policies relative to this issue,” LaPorte said. “All of the commanders understand it and provide a lot of training and education to our young servicemembers relative to [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908). We have a multi-faceted program, a strategy that addresses awareness, identification, reduction and enforcement of policies associated with [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908).”
In addition to educating younger soldiers, “all our leadership training — our company commander course, our first sergeant course, our NCO academies — all now have instruction relative to [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) and prostitution,” LaPorte said.
Another facet is offering alternative for drinking off-post. Late night sports leagues, more movies, 24-hour facilities and increased chapel offerings help, LaPorte said.
“We’ve been doing this for a quite a while. And I’ll tell you, over the past two to three years, there has been a marked decline in crime, alcohol-related incidents and sexually transmitted diseases,” LaPorte said. “If you look for measures of effectiveness, are your policies being effective … we’re getting good solid positive indications our policies are working.”

Yes, that area near Ahyon Station on the green subway line 2 is a sort of red-light district. A disappointing sort, to be avoided. As an adventurer, it was irresistible to me to try to figure out what shenanigans were on offer. After all, any place in Korea where trampy-looking girls sit behind a glass door in dim, pink lighting is that kind of place. But in Ahyon-dong it was extremely frustrating as they pretended that absolutely nothing of the sort was going on. It seems they are under instructions that no foreign dick is allowed. And it's easy to spend W60,000, W120,000, or W180,000 trying to get to that conclusion. Yep, AhHyun-dong is, as SeoulSurvivor describes, full of low-class room salons, and really really sleazy place to visit. Can you get laid there? Yes, but it will cost (probably) more than the high class room salons in Kangnam.
Their trick is so simple : you are asked to order beer after beer by the box (if your refuse, you are kicked out), until they reach their own standard amount of sale, which roughly escalates 150,000won for showing tits, 300,000won for HJ/BJ, and 600,000won for FS. And it's per person.
So, among the Koreans, it's a standard practice to negotiate *before* entering the shop about what we are going to get at what price.

Yep, RLDs are still closed and only operate in secret, I heard. The main alley in Chungryangri and Yongsan has no lights on, and some back alley shops

If you're not military and the MPs ask you for your ID, you can refuse to show it to them. However, if you do they will more than likely make contact with the KNPs and you would obviously be required to produce it for them (KNPs). If you're not military, recommend you don't make a big deal of it, just show your ID and move on as you did. The MPs and CPs have become part of the circus in Itaewon and as the article suggest, their presence will be there for some time to come. CPs can't even ask the military for ID, they're just courtesy patrol and have no power other than to call the MPs or KNPs for assistance.
Where did you get it for 30K? I found that the lowest rate for the service you described is at Fantasy and other clubs way on top of the hill, but those chicks are on the very low numerical scale. The Korean PD might not be in sight but they're there if needed. The MPs have no jurisdiction over civilians and you don't have to show your ID to an MP but in Korea you certainly have to produce photo ID any time a Korean cop asks for it. So if an MP suspects you're military and you refuse to produce ID, it's a simple matter to call in the Korean PD in. And you don't want to have to deal with those weirdos. So, you did the right thing.

Almost by accident, I ran into a very nice full-service massage parlor.

I will be visiting Seoul again next week and have to say the discussion the last couple months on this board have been a bit depressing! Personally I thought that Yongsan was a great place to go.

The area between the SNU subway stop and the Naksungdae stop is full of room salons, Dalan Jujum (noraebangs where girls are provided), love hotels, and the occasional barber shop and sports massage. Prices do not seem to be much cheaper than the rest of Seoul, but I saw zero police presence (Korean or US military) on a Friday night. However, I think you probably need to speak at lease passable Korean or go with a Korean friend to get by. I'm a Westerner, and didn't encounter any problems or rejection, but I also speak half-decent Korean, so that might have helped. It certainly helped some of the girls I met warm up to me.
The room salons are pretty explicit about what's included if you just ask, the raunchier ones that include full nude strip show and potentially sex in the room (depends on girls, establishment, etc.) run about 350,000 won per person including drinks, room, etc. they will generally provide service for one person, but I have not partaken yet. If anyone would like to partner up and explore one of these places, send me a PM.
Next are the Dalan Jujums, or Noraebangs with girls. The girls in these places usually run about 70,000 per hour, but all you get for that is some snuggling in the room and grab-ass (just as often her grabbing your ass). This can be fun, but as they say, there is no sex in the champagne room. Yes, I know this is not the most exciting of posts, but not much going on with this board lately due to the crackdown, so:
Love Hotels: Lots of these, maybe 30 or so, all going about 30,000 to 40,000 a night, and you can usually get a discount for short time (4 hours or so). Around these hotels it is pretty easy to find those little advertising cards for the outcall services, which are all pretty much the same: 150,000 for one hour of service (usually including a weak-ass massage), girls are usually decent (6-8), CBJ or BBBJ depends on the girl (many of them are independent operators), and mechanical sex. Once in a while you can find a hottie who provides good service, and then can usually strike up a more long-term deal, but you may have to sort through a lot of mediocre experiences before you find one.
Starbucks, WaBa, etc.: western coffee shops and bars are great places to find regular girls (not professionals), but you have to accept the fact you are going to get rejected 90% of the time, and the remaining 10% may not lead to sex right away. The Japanese-style rampan or whatever they call it is definitely not alive and well in Korea. The SNU area has lots of college students (not just the SNU snobs who go home to mom and dad every night), girls with part time jobs or using one of the study hotels in the area. Best bet is to offer to help them with English practice to get to know them better, but don't use this as your pickup line since I think lots of them have heard it before (I speak from experience). It may take you days or weeks to get them into bed, but hey, it's free. Of course the downside is you might find yourself with a girlfriend and the 20 text messages a day that come along with her.

Earlier this month, 2nd ID officials conducted health inspections of nightclub workers in Tongduchon, the city where the largest 2nd ID facilities in Area I — Camp Casey and Camp Hovey — are located.
A 2nd ID memo to nightclub owners states the inspections involved the division’s Preventative Medicine Office and the Tongduchon Health Department.
“All clubs will have all entertainers and club employees present during the inspection. Entertainers will have their passports, alien cards and health records present for verification of identity.
“Since entertainers are in close proximity to soldiers it is imperative that they can demonstrate that they are free of any communicable diseases,” the memo states.
One nightclub worker who passed the memo to Stars and Stripes and claims she was forced into prostitution after being lured to South Korea by the promise of an entertainment industry job, said health inspections give the impression the Army is involved in management of prostitution in Area I, despite a high-profile anti-vice campaign this year.
“They shouldn’t be having these health inspections. If there is no prostitution, they wouldn’t need the inspections,” she said.
However, 2nd ID spokesman Maj. Mike Lawhorn said the health checks do not amount to management of prostitution by the Army.
“We are absolutely not involved in the management of this. It is extremely important to the command, that everybody understands at all levels, that the division is absolutely committed to this zero-tolerance culture for activities that support [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) and prostitution. We are not tolerating anything that supports that,” he said.
The health inspections had nothing to do with [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) or prostitution, he said.
“They are about enforcing health and safety standards for our soldiers. We have made it very clear to the club owners and we are continuing to make clear to them our stance on [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) and prostitution,” he said.
Members of the Korean Special Tourists Association (KSTA), an umbrella organization for nightclub owners serving U.S. soldiers in Area I, understand the Army’s concerns, he added.
“They want to run clean, profitable clubs to the benefit of everyone. It is to everyone’s benefit that the health and safety rules and the laws of Korea are adhered to,” Lawhorn said.
Clubs that break the rules will be declared off-limits, he said.
“It is not going to be worth it to break Korean law or violate the standards of the KSTA,” Lawhorn said.
Recent health inspections of Area I nightclub workers were the same as those carried out at all South Korean nightclubs and were done by Gyeonggi Province officials with military personnel present, Lawhorn said.
The health exams, which foreign entertainers must complete every three months, include a biannual AIDS test. Tests for other sexually transmitted diseases are optional, Lawhorn said.
Father Glen Jarron of the Filipino Catholic Center in Seoul said the Army’s health checks were of less concern than the South Korean government’s requirement that entertainers undergo AIDS tests. Jarron has worked extensively with Filipinos trafficked to South Korea.
“Why should they require entertainers to have an AIDS test and not require ordinary factory workers? That is tantamount to saying that the girls are not really going into that kind of work,” he said.
The real problem was not health checks or AIDS tests, he added.
“It is about ending the idea that they [Filipina nightclub workers] are still being used by American GIs or other foreigners,” he said.
Can't speak to the situation at Miari, but the area immediately around the Hilton is pretty dead. There are some super-seedy barbershop type places near Namdaemun, but I wouldn't recommend going to any of them; better to get a porno on the hotel TV and masturbate. However, Bukchang-dong is not too far away, and you could hit a room salon there. Or, if you want a sure thing, try one of the outcall services in any of the English-language newspapers.

Starbucks, WaBa, etc.: western coffee shops and bars are great places to find regular girls (not professionals), but you have to accept the fact you are going to get rejected 90% of the time, and the remaining 10% may not lead to sex right away. There is the fascination with foreigners but even that has retreated. Four or five years ago it would not be uncommon to have a woman strike up a conversation with you in a Starbuck. These days, however, young Koreans don't find westerners entirely exotic. Every school has a western teacher. And the World Cup pretty much super saturated them with foreigner experiences.
That said, it still is easy to get a date in Seoul. But mostly women here want to practice their English and have dinner with a foreigner. I am an ESLer here and the first thing to point out is that there is a gender imbalance in the community here, for every 65 males teaching esl here there are 35 females (my estimates based on observations of my area over the last year). Job ads would also back this up as there is increasing demand for female teachers. Most, but not all that I know are in their early 20s, having graduated from college and then come here to pay off loans. Most of them will be out in places like Hongdae, trying to get it on with the young bucks who go there. Believe it or not, there are guys here who prefer western chicks. If you can't get hot chicks in your home country, you're not going to get them here either. That's what PFP is for. On the bright side, it's been my (limited) experience that the current Korean college-age population has a lot less prejudice against dating Western guys than in years past. There's still quite a bit of prejudice, but in the six years I've been here I've noticed it decreasing. Today's college-age students are much more likely to have travelled and lived overseas than in the past, so maybe that has something to do with it. So, if you're young, good-looking, and have money (or really any two of those three), and aren't we all, your chances will improve - obviously.

I just got back from my weekly de-stress at FRIENDs and was pleasantly surprised by the presence of two new girls. Both are quite cute.. I went to Friends about 1 month ago. First of all, Friends is located in a (see earlier posts by others for directions) noticeably non-P4P and non-foreigner area, but it is very close to the subway exit. It's labeled a Stress Clinic and not Massage. You go down a few steps. The entrance door was not locked and I believe there was another customer inside. The guy inside spoke excellent english.
The rooms are not really rooms. There one big area with "stalls". The walls do not go completely to the ceiling and there is no door to each stall. The inside decor (if you can call it that) is run-down and it could be cleaner (e.g. some stains of some sort on the walls).
The fee is 60k won with no mention of a "mileage" card. The girl was probaby mid-20's, maybe cute but not pretty. Very little english but communications wasn't really a problem. The massage wasn't very good. She seemed to massage hard areas where there is mostly bone (ouch!) and massage lightly areas with muscle or maybe fat ;o). The hand finish was very mechanical. I think you guys have experienced that before.
Total session time was about 45minutes. It's probaby worth a visit but I can't wholeheartedly recommend. If you're looking for a more medium to high upscale experience than this is not the place to go. If you're looking for a quick massage and release, then give it a try.
The good news is that I can't believe LE would find anything illegal about this place since the rooms themselves would detour any reasonable person from wanting to do anything but get a massage and maybe a quick hand release. I visited 588 last night, Friday. I've talked to a few taxi drivers, who all confirm that basically, Yongsan, Miari, and 588 are open (they get a lot of fares that way late at night, like me). 588, however, had a major police presence, and in fact, there were more cops than customers. My friend talked with one, who confirmed that they have essentially gone back to the previous tolerant attitude. However, he did confirm that there may be additional crackdowns. I think the reason they aren't doing much now is that it is relatively abandoned -- only about 1/3 of the shops remain open, and it seems to me that many of the really hot girls were the first to go. For a Friday, it was definitely dead, but at least I got my rocks off. Incidentally, the girls were pretty aggressive in opening doors and yelling at us.
Incidentally, prices, despite the collapse in the market on both sides, have remained the same. 70,000 won for one time, 180,000 (bargain down to 150,000) for an hour.

Not much of an update, but I did break up with the Miari gal recently.

I'm not sure if you got the help you wanted so here's another suggestion for ya. Try 69 Anma. It's the closest Anma to the subway stop (just north) with a huge neon sign saying 69 and also Japanese and Korean signs. You can't avoid seeing it. You enter just below the small neon sign in Japanese and go downstairs and then there's a door to the left. I paid 100kwon in the massage room to the receptionist. Then if you walk 100 meters up (right from the station, uphill) then the first street on your right will be the one hosting Paradise. It also has some carpet laid in front of it covering the street also, partly.
Should you be lost you can hop in a taxi and ask to bring you to SAMSUN Mart. Then you end up exactly in the same street.
As you enter you turn left and go towards the receptionist, who will be located at the end of the corridor on the left side of it. SEOUL — A top 8th Army official is considering putting the string of bars and clubs in Itaewon known collectively as “Hooker Hill” off-limits to all U.S. servicemembers, workers and contractors.
Col. Timothy McNulty, the Area II commander who ultimately decides which businesses and areas in Seoul are off-limits to American personnel, said he has been working with Itaewon businesses and police officials for 90 days to encourage them to limit the prostitution and propositioning common on the hill.
The results have been slow, he said during a recent interview.
“If we can’t get this under control, one of my options would be to put the whole area off-limits,” McNulty said Wednesday. “There’s nothing set in stone. It’s something I reserve the right to do.”
The policy change under consideration is part of U.S. Forces Korea’s efforts to keep servicemembers from hiring prostitutes, a practice USFK and others believe supports [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) on the peninsula, the commander said. Many bars and businesses on the hill — which is one block south of the main drag in Itaewon — support the effort, he said.
A meeting last week between McNulty and more than a dozen bar owners reflected some of that support, but also aired some grievances.
Some of the bar owners present were wary of other American policies, a point they made clear to McNulty during a meeting Thursday afternoon at the King Club.
They say business has dropped after USFK imposed a new drinking age and stricter curfew requirements late last year. The changes are driving servicemembers either to clear out a few minutes before midnight to meet the curfew, or to spend their money in other parts of Seoul where U.S. military police don’t have permission to patrol, they told McNulty.
It’s a frustrating position, both sides acknowledged, especially for bar owners who have been following requests by U.S. officials to help ensure a safer social environment. And that frustration is part of an ongoing dialogue between McNulty and the bar owners to air concerns and offer suggestions about improving the business and nightlife in Itaewon.
At last week’s meeting, McNulty handed out 23 certificates of appreciation to the bar owners for cooperating with USFK and making some changes in the last few months.
For example, USFK has asked the bars to hire bouncers, to discourage parking near the front doors, to refuse to serve alcohol to high-school students and to stop serving people — especially servicemembers — who already have had too much to drink. Many bars have complied.
The owners, in turn, graciously accepted the recognition and read a letter of thanks.
Then they got down to business.
Once again they asked McNulty to consider changing the curfew policy, which directs all U.S. personnel associated with USFK, including private contractors, to be home by midnight. They again objected to last fall’s change in the drinking age, which made it against military policy for servicemembers under 21 to drink, even off-base. The South Korean drinking age is 20.
McNulty said he would pass both requests along, but offered little hope that the policies would change. The drinking age was changed to bring it in line with U.S. laws, he said, and the curfew aids USFK’s protection of its personnel from terrorists and other threats, he said.
Another objection involves the “courtesy patrols,” where U.S. military police and South Korean police tour Itaewon to look for curfew violators or people who might be in off-limits bars. Those patrols are distinct to Itaewon, and the servicemembers know it, the bar owners said Thursday. More and more American customers are going to the Hong-ik University area in Seoul, where USFK has no agreement with local police.
McNulty acknowledged the concerns, and said he’s working to get patrols added to Hong-ik and other areas in Seoul. In the last couple of weeks, there were two fights among servicemembers in areas of Seoul outside of Itaewon, he said, adding that one victim still was recovering in the hospital.
“We’ve been putting on the full-court press,” he told the group. “I understand. And I do voice your concerns.”
Still, all this has hurt business, said Kim Sam Sook, who owns the Grand Ole Opry and East N West on the hill. She favors cleaning up the hill. If it’s put off-limits, however, that means no U.S. servicemember, worker or contractor could even walk by her bars.
“Itaewon is my life. I don’t want this kind of business,” she said of the prostitution and of the bar her family has run since 1969. “I know many, many soldiers. Now they say off-limits. It pisses me off.”
The decision about closing access to the hill hasn’t been made, McNulty stressed during an interview in his office on Wednesday.
Prostitution is illegal under South Korean law, and McNulty said he’s been encouraging local South Korean police officials and bar owners to enforce their own laws. There is little U.S. officials can do, however, other than limit customers and hope to affect supply and demand.
The majority of bars on the hill already are off-limits to U.S. personnel, he said. The remaining ones are traditional bars and dance clubs and don’t like that their customers often must walk by propositioning women just to come in and play pool or dance, he said.
“It’s good,” said Oh Chang-Kun, the manager of King Club, a bar at the foot of the hill that his family has run since 1975.
