There's actually more to the story that this reminds me of. I met her at a cafe before going to the hotel. We started to talk about payment there, and when talking about money she mentioned the cost of getting here from her house and how much the water cost at the cafe we were in.
"What water?" I asked.
She pointed to 2 glasses of tapwater that were on the table next to us. (She had been sitting there before I came in.) I didn't even realize she'd gotten them for us. I never drink Hanoi tapwater and certainly wasn't going to touch it. I didn't see her drink any either. I explained to her how absurd it was what she was saying, since neither of us had touched it and I hadn't even asked for it. She laughed and seemed to agree.
These little petty money games involving water probably were her testing my reaction. It's a very short sighted strategy. On the one hand she gets to feel like she can squeeze a few thousand more dong out of me. On the other hand the extra hassle and silly games makes me less likely to give her more business. I am surprised people are having so much difficulty with this. Here are the directions clear as I can give them.
From the airport, take a cab / bus coming to town. Once the bus crosses the Thang Long bridge, keep going straight towards Hang Quoc Viet instead of taking the right towards Au Co. On your left on the opposite side of the road, you will pass a number of open doors, with the girls outside. Have never sampled whats on offer but pass this way everytime I get into Hanoi and head to town from the airport. Hope this helps.

I was last week in Hanoi for work. One day I felt tired due to whole day meetings and went out seeking for a MP.

I agree about anyone duluded enough to try to romance a hooker. I connected with her on Dateinasia and she was a great tour guide. I enjoyed her laughter at breakfast our first day. Unfortuate to hear this scam/theft is now happening in Viet. as well. This practice orginally started in Cambodia (PP)--read back on some of my post there as I'm a veteran monger there. Only difference here is that the touts are on motobikes in Viet and in PP they just try to rush you into their houses as you walk by. But once inside its the same scam.
PTHappened to me last night in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh, lost USD540 (no joke, I just arrived yesterday). I was mad like hell, she sped off as soon as I found out. The door wasn't locked, and I knew I'd been had. This really ruins my mood here, will be leaving for Hanoi tomorrow, screw Saigon.

I'll be brutally honest with you, back in 1997 when I was 19 I was a victim of this scam, now in 2010 if your still being scamed especially with the number of reported scams on the and other forums just like the thai gem scam, then you are and IDIOT, basically greedy and stupid, as it basically preys on the fact that a hot girl is offered for you for 20 bucks. And sham on you if your older than 19 as you should have better sense.
And frankly that stuff about it originating in Cambodia is a load of crap, the guys doing it in Cambodia are Vietnamese. There from the conflict wiuth the khemer rouge. So its going to happen anywhere, Saigon Hanoi Cambodia where ever there are unscrouplous guys taking advantage human stupidity.

i don't like touts. however, whenever i'm tempted to let a tout set me up, i tell him to bring the girl to my hotel room. that filters out the crooks. most hotels will allow in guests of any sort until 11pm. if i like the girl, i dismiss the tout and tell him to wait for her outisde on his bike.
finally, visitors to hanoi should rest assured that most massage parlor employees would not steal money out of a locker. at least, it's never happened to me in countless visits. but don't carry more than you intend to spend.

If the girl objects then that should be setting the alarm bells off.

CheersAll I can tell you is never bring more money than you really need. And better to walk away. Because there is a possibility you can lose more than jut money. Secondly I'm generally distrustfull of everyone, and I keep and repeating that there is no such thing as a free lunch and that for every benefit there has to be someone to pay. Justa question of how much. I am also curious os to this local website that Fr as exchanged and organised. I know of one such site where girls are exchanged by PM but often they are scams. Ie the poster reports a report on some girl etc and saying he has her number and pm him for it, lost of pm arise often with no conclusuon or you get it and it turns out to be something other than what was stated. I mean you can even find that sort of shit in a local newspapers, that ie girls with phone numbers offerring masage plus extras. I don't trust anything. If you don't live here and don't speak the language just be skeptical of everything.

LOL No, it was our famous friend that I met on Dateinasia. At the time I met her I didn't know she was a motorbike girl. The hotel is less than 1 year old and has internet in room, wifi. Modern furnishing and big big windows looking out to the street, on higher floor can even see Hoan kiem lake.

Try Heart hotel. There are several others on the same small street.$70 US per night is far more than you need to pay for a good hotel in the Old Quarter with Wi-Fi, flat screen cable TV, English speaking staff and a good breakfast included. In early January I stayed at Elegance 2 on Ma May Street for $45 per night and when back in Hanoi a few days later stayed at Emerald a few doors down for $30 per night. Both were spotlessly clean but Elegance had slightly larger room, a tub vs. A simple in bathroom shower and a somewhat softer bed (I found all the hotel beds in Vietnam to be a bit hard). Elegance has three other hotels in Hanoi and all are well rated and there are many other good options as well.

Ha Long Bay, the World Heritage Site in the North of the Gulf of Tonkin is allegedly truly beautiful and a 'must see', as long as sea fog allows you to see farther than the fingers of your outstretched hand.
In my case, unfortunately, this was not the case.
Getting there ( ca 160 km from Hanoi) is a 3,5 hr journey. A taxi will cost you between $50, negotiated with the Hanoi taxi driver directly and $150 with the hotel doing the "arrangements".
For the return journey, my hotel offered a "special price" of $190.
A taxi to Hai Phong, to catch the daily JetStar flight to HCMC cost me $30. The JetStar fare is about 60% of the Vietnam Airlines fare, but as always, you get what you pay for; more on that later.
The hotels in Halong City are many, in the high season allegedly fully booked, but totally empty in February. Beside me, there were all of 2 other guests in the excellent but not cheap ($100) 4 star Halong Plaza in Bai Chai, situated on the bay shore, just before the bay bridge.
The problem is, that apart from the Halong Bay cruises, there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING else to do there!
Bai Chai is 2 km away and even there, the restaurants are about as inviting as cow sheds. There is even a "massage", with similarly attractve amenities and mongering resources.
To sum up:
From Hanoi, bite the bullet, shell out $150-$250 for an all inclusive luxury 2 day 1 night (on a junk) tour package of Halong Bay. They will probably bribe the weather gods to keep the fog away!
Whatever you do, don't do it the way I attempted, i.e. avoid staying in a hotel there.

it's worth repeating in its entirety as a lesson to those new to vietnam. this is a remarkably safe country, in general. however, the cardinal rule is: never, never go into a house that a tout or bike girl takes you to. do it in your hotel, do it in a neutral "nha nghi" (motel), do it in the massage parlor of a hotel - but not in a strange building.
i don't like touts. however, whenever i'm tempted to let a tout set me up, i tell him to bring the girl to my hotel room. that filters out the crooks. most hotels will allow in guests of any sort until 11pm. if i like the girl, i dismiss the tout and tell him to wait for her outisde on his bike.

First, the THANG LONG BRIDGE is used only for motorbikes...the other bridge has cars from the airport. There are two bridges. The Thang Long Bridge is elevated and does not empty onto any accessible street. On the Hanoi side of the bridge there are markets galore, selling everything you can imagine and more, but no cheap sex.
I walked the entire area, back and forth, every block that I could find that was in any way near what was described here. Unless everything has changed since it was first reported----THIS REPORT ABOUT DOORWAYS AND GIRLS IS BOGUS. They don't exist. There have been reports about guys having a hard time finding this location and the reason is that it's not there. I walked up and down, looking for what was described here and there was nothing close to it. Shops and stalls, traffic, business and commerce active and busy, but NOTHING resembling anything like a row of doorways with girls outside.

With the Somerset on your right, go to the end of the road and you will come to a T junction. Here take a right. This road is Pham Van Dong, which leads to Cau Thang Long and the airport. But the bridge is a good 3 to 4 Km away from the T Point and all the action is in the middle about a Km or so after you take the right turn. Lots of garages and pink lighting. 100K VND ticket. If you are coming from the airport side, cross the bridge and go straight towards Metro, ignoring the right turn to Au Co.

Yes, this area has been active for well over a decade and if you can't find it you are looking in the wrong place. It's wrong really to connect it to Cau Thang Long as it is Pham Van Dong and well before the bridge. Before he died a few years back it was all called Thang Long Highway, but then they changed the name of the southern part of it to PVD.

Anyway, after further investigation, this area is declining about this activity, yes for a decade, the place used to serve as money-poket-making for studs, but most of unis as been moved south. Explored yesterday a new niche related to that thang long issue.
We drove south on Nguyen trail for miles (the street start to Parkson mall and end up to Ha Dong City) about 5 km down south, the city reach its limit and make a Y. The street name going to the left (west) is Ba la street. Engage here.
After 50 meters you will pass a railway, 100 meters after, on the right side starts the fields, on the left side, have a area under construction. So quiet here.

I had gone with 3 of my local buddies so did not face any harassment but did not see any other westerners so am not sure how it will play out for a foreigner on his own. We stayed in a normal beach front hotel. Purely functional - 15 USD a night which I shared. The rates quoted (200K) are the same across the beachfront area and all you have to do is follow a biker to the main hotspot. There are some taller girls about 5 ft 6 or so. Overall, unhesitatingly recommended if you can dig up a local to go with. Not sure how it would be for a single foreigner. Did not see a single other foreigner in my stay there.

Came back from 2 nites in Hanoi, stayed at the Fortuna Hotel. Agree with Explorerman's comment, I found almost everyone in Hanoi very friendly .. from the hotel staff, to restaurant waiters/waitresses, people on the streets when I went walkabout.

If you take the girls to room upstairs is USD 80 for short time. USD 120 for all nite at your own hotel)so 120 +35 + drinks for girl-you). Problem was many of the girls we tried didn't want to go out all nite (at least not with us) and there were maybe 7 girls who wanted all we didn't fancy and then left.
Overall place looks nice, quiete pricey I think.

Nha nghi hoa dao (hoa dao hotel) at so: 22 duong ho boi (22 swimming pool road). 600k + 100k tip (I know we got ripped off but it was late) for 1 hour fun with cute girls.

The facilities are kind of run down in my opinion. The masseuse was probably in early 30s but was not bad looking. After bathing me and washing all the right places, she gave an excellent massage including hot stones treatment. She worked very hard and asked for permission to turn the fan on. Oddly enough (for the looks of the place) she did not offer to do anything else but asked if I was sore anywhere else so she could work on that with the remaining time. I have not read all the posts here yet (quite a few though) but know the scene in Hanoi for getting girls to a room in a decent hotel is difficult. What I do is keep numbers for Viet girls I meet elsewhere in Asia (Orchard Towers, Beach Club Cafe, etc) and also ask for their Viet number. Most of the girls I meet come from Hanoi, so when I am in town I call or sms them in advance and either get them to come to the hotel smartly dressed in the evening (ideally before the curfew, but they know how to deal with that if they will come late) or during the day if I am not working.

I have been there too, and it is as you describe. It seems that the club is trying to get the girls not to offer extras, so they are pressured a bit, it seems. Yes, you're right. I have the advantage of being a Viet-speaking Westerner and that helps keep them in line. If they suggest something ridiculous like 500,000, a Viet guy would just look at them like their crazy, so you might try that. Me, I just don't do pre-HJ neogotiations and I tell them very politiely that I don't discuss money until the service is complete. In many cases, the girls want to put their phone numbers into my phone as I'm leaving, so they can't be too upset about the tip.

Read the Forum in more detail, but in Hanoi, Fortuna is a place, but you stay there, and Sheraton for take out to cheap hotel. Both $100 basically, so more expensive than needed, but perhaps workable.
Not sure you can do something with Halong, unless you take a cheap girl and cheap tour where they don't follow the rules.

I arrived in Hanoi a few days ago, had hard time adjusting to the time change, then family all want me to go here and there. I had to stay with relatives for a few days.
I will be getting a hotel for the rest of my stay near the old quarter. The hotel is girl friendly, (I emailed first asking specifically about that) and the owner was cool with it but said he wouldn't be responsible for anything stolen, and I told him I was cool with that because I'll leave most of my things at my uncle's place.

Love Vietnam so far, once I rent my own scooter in a few days and have a hotel I can come home late, I'm going to try and meet some girls at the bars and clubs.
Then we went into another bar, got together with some guys from the Spain, asked a barman for address where to go for boom boom and went on the hunt. We agreed on 400k per person with bordelmamma and went for a bussines. Well, I am fucking my girl for something like one minute and she started to scream that I have a big cock and it hurts her, not possible to fuck her anymore. She wasnt much interested on finishing me by hand, so when I saw her face it completely turned me down and I went away.

Well, he ended up like me.So I found out today that this story was from Cua Bac St, there are some brothels where the taximan or any other rip-off man will try to take you (well not all of the taximans are bad guys, but when it comes to the boomboom most of them probably are).
Today we started to play the game "rip-off your local rip-off man". Drinking on street, talking to some local guy (yes, I know the rule don't ever believe anyone from the street, but he looked like more trusthworthy then other scammers here), after like one hour he propose us boomboom for 1. 2 milion (me, my friend and him) paid by us. So we agreed and we even told him, if everthing will be ok we could go again day after (to make more incentive for him).
So we went by taxi to Cua Bac St, but there was no boomboom available as we were too early (around 4pm), then we went with him for massage, he promised not more then 13usd and the taxi is on his account. So we went something like 8km to the outskirts of hanoi to some shithole, he then change his mind and asked for 20usd per massage (the girls were nice, but in this kind of shitholes the locals probably pay something like 5-7usd for massage, excluding the tip). When we saw the conditions we decided to just walk a way as we realize he is trying to earn some "big dongs" on our account. So he made a lot of screams, tried to chase us for around 10 minutes with taxi man, asked for 250 dongs for way with the taxi (on the single backway we paid something like 80k dongs), but we didn't gave them a single dong as we walk away from them.
Well those guys needs to learn a lesson that you can't simply scam any joe6pack coming from west countries. Really, we arent greedy guys, we have no problem to pay for a good vietnamese pussy in our homeland 100-150usd per hour, but we will not support anyone with even single dong trying to rip us off here. We are learning fastly.
Anyone Know where I can get a haircut with extras? I know they have them in HCMC but not sure where to go in Hanoi.
Also I've just tried Nutz bar, New Square and no pro's to be seen. Where would you guys suggest?
I have a lead from a cabbie that fun can be had for 350, 000 so I'm going to check that out but I wouldn't mind paying a a little more for a hot club-bar type girl.

Pham van Dong is a street well west of the center of Hanoi, by taxi from the Old quarter you should expect to pay 100, 000 (5 dollars USD) if you take one of the mini cabs, if you take a mid sized prices goes up.
I went there with a cabbie contact, and the picking were slim at the early hour. After 930pm is best. You will see women sitting around in store fronts beside closed gated shop fronts. Drive slow along Pham Van Dong north of Hoang Quoc Viet. And when you see a group or ladies wave you in stop off and talk to them.
If you don't speak viet like I do then you can just use sign language or a pad of paper to negotiate. Always ask the price first. I saw a girl that was a hard 7. 5 here. The price was 150, 000 (yep not a typo) and another 100, 000 for wetting your whistle with her mouth before hand. This place is like eating in a food court or fast food joint you will get in and out quick no fancy dinning room.
So for a total of 250, 000 quick service, I prefer GFE myself but its good to know and pass on.
As for the cabbie he later tried to scame me out of 200, 000 when I was going to give him more then that anyways (dumb a*ss) so yeah fair warning don't trust the cabbies (most anyways).

JDThe hotel where I stayed (Prince, 65 Hang Cot) was fine (no cheating at all. 16 USD for an ok room in the old quarters) as was the gold shop to exchange even large amounts. But as the general rule you are pretty right. I don't like Hanoi at all for exactly that reason.

Don't worry about the people in line behind you, they will wait patiently. Common scam is to short you 100k. When you point it out they can say "Oh sorry, my mistake" and hand over another 100k. If you don't point it out they are 100k richer. If you walk away and then come back to point it out, you have no argument.
In the hotel, clarify everything, especially VAT (10%). Common scam is to tell you it is included on check-in, then tell you it's not included on check-out. Also beware local phone charges, breakfast, etc. Clarify all beforehand and better write it down. Normal for them to change things at the end, when time to pay, especially if you are in a hurry or not in the mood to argue over a few extra dollars.

Your looking for some action in Hanoi. Your a pale faced tourist wandering around the lake clueless. You can't find a proper brothel or disco. Sex happens in Hanoi you just got to find it. And like a lot of Vietnam most sex for pay caters to the local males and not long dong silver. We found a motorbike driver that took us a couple K's out of central to a backstreet that had a bunch of girls standing around and motorbike runners of their own. They rode up beside us, we picked girls and rode back to our Hotel which admitted them while holding their I'd cards. We cleared with the Hotel beforehand that we could bring in the girls. A prerequisite often coupled with a trashy room. The sex was quick. For me pleasurable. The cost fifty dollar.

Another scam is a restaurant that will have prices on the food, but none on the drinks. Then they will gouge you on the drinks.

Much appreciated. Fortuna is a good place to stay. My info is about 6months old. There is a nightclub in the basement and access is via stairs from the lobby. Girls can be intercepted in and around lobby on occasion. Girls will come to your room. I forget the rate being quoted but I wasn't shocked by it. The spa on one of the higher floors of the hotel is worth a visit. Girls negotiate for tips in the midst of their work. Most unfair, IMHO! The client is given a card on which to state the tip and to sign. Valuables have been secured in the locker room. All in all I can recommend.

Thanks in advanceI'd suggest what every other forum member will tell you to do. Go back and read the forum. Try reading about the hotels in the hotel section to get a general feel for the country. There's an abundance of information if you read between the lines.
Just remember that VN is not like its neighbours ie Thailand, Cambodia, Phils etc, Not everything is what it seems.

stayed at the fortuna (on the capital floors) for recent visit w / malaysian coworker. good prices, good lounge, good hispeed internet, and. a seriously decent ktv downstairs. (it's not the sheraton or the hilton opera, but it's not much below them, which is good for hanoi hotels).
honestly, if you're on a low low budget, it's not ideal, but with an expense account. it's well worth it.
after dinner, we went downstairs to boss, the ktv, waiting for clients to show up who. failed to do so. their loss.
boss was relatively recently renovated from the looks of it.
on a monday night, there were about 75 girls out front in the entrance gauntlet saying "welcome, boss". all sizes, shapes, types (a saw a couple of likely eurasian girls in the mix).
we got to the ktv room, and asked the mammi to bring girls who'd be able / willing to go upstairs later. (not all of the girls will or can. some just do ktv, others will sideline upstairs, as well) she started parading them thru and my colleague and i started taking notes.

I just finished up an extended stay in Hanoi and thought I'd pass this one.
For the short-term monger, Hanoi is tough. I suggest you do it the expensive way and go to the Fortuna, but it'll cost you $200 all night with peripheral expenses. Or do it the medium way and go to Nutz at the Sheraton where you'll pay $50 short-term or all night. Or do it the cheap way and visit a proven high-end men's massage parlor, but then you'll just get HJ for $20-30.
