- Karaokes are a waste of time, don't go there alone. If you have some local friends, you can ask them to take you to one, maybe then you will have good time.

- 28 Hang Chuoi is actually pretty good. The real price is 200k VND outside + 200k VND (tip to girl). They will name 30USD if they think it's your first time. Just go and give 200k and act like it ain't your first time. If they don't budge, try to leave. They will surely stop you. The good thing about this place is it is less hassles and the girl is a bit more cooperative than other places.

To add a bit more detail about what happens in KTV. (Karaoke Television Television)

These places are vary varied but normally they are on a series of floors and have a number of different rooms of varying sizes. Each room has sofas and 1 TV set (or more depending on the room). There is a big book of songs and you choose the songs and sing to your hearts content. You choose music and order beer or food and it comes through and you sing. You can go to these places with your parents or wife and friend no problem and they will have no idea what is going on in the other rooms.

In each of these places is normally a load of hot (or not) chicks. If you come in with a load of expats or a load of western girls you will go into the room no problem and never see the girls. If you go into them with a group of locals they will speak to the papasan or mamasan and you'll get a line up of girls come into your room for you to choose. You all choose one girl to sit with you and the rest leave. Generally speaking again more variety comes in here. Some places will be like a roman orgy (naked chicks pouring beer all over each and guys getting sucked off in the room) others the girls will chat to you, hold you hand and pour you beer, sing for you but not a lot else. There are a half dozen or more fairly new Tam Quat on the main road running along the rail road tracks from the area where the Media Markt and the auto dealers are located to the toll road that take you to Halong Bay. It seems a long way to go for some action.

LexLutherThis idea that the ethnic minority girls are uneducated and unwashed is bad propaganda put about by the ethnic majority Vietnamese (what they call Kinh).

Most of what you call the minority girls who work in the tourist trade in Sapa are far more civilized and educated than the local Vietnamese. This is because they have escaped the communist education system and can easily. They seem to be able to learn English quickly and very well as well as to interact with tourists and foreign visitors. Some of the more intelligent conversations have been with these girls in Sapa. But my experience with them is that they are happy to talk to you, be a tour guide and all the rest but will not put out for money. THey will marry the right guy, and if that is what you want, you could do a lot worse. A few foreigners that I heard of have married these girls and are still happily so.

Stop any woman in Sapa and ask her directions. If Vietnamese, she will not likely understand you. Even if you speak Vietnamese (and she understands your way of pronouncing!) , she won't know the hotel you are asking directions to. The minority girl will very likely answer you in reasonable English.

Now to the mongering. I would be surprised if there were any hobby possibilities in Sapa now. Back a few years ago I searched the town with the help of a foreign Vietnamese guy (who spoke Vietnamese) and we found a massage / coffee shop place that charged 600K up front. The girls were all Vietnamese and the price was all-inclusive full-service for one hour but only one room for on site. We had to do scissors, rock, paper to decide who went first. The next time I went to Sapa it was closed down. I searched the town and went for massages in several of the places advertising but not even HJ was on offer.

By the way, you will have a terrible time with bringing a local girl to your room. The hotel / GH will not allow it unless you register together.

If you want some action, why not bring it with you from Hanoi. Find an easy-going girl of easy virtue who speaks a few words of English and make a deal with her. This one is a karaoke bar and all the gangsters / pimps are asleep in the karaoke lounge, they are all hustled out and the half asleep pimp (this is at lunch time) tries to sell me a half hour karaoke package while he goes to wake up some girls, no dice.

Take a third cab to another massage parlour. The friendly guy downstairs says yeah 400 for happy ending or 600 for boom boom, just pay the girl and tip me something later. All too easy. Went to the room and picked the prettier of the 2 girls on offer. She proceeds to give me a scrub in the bath, facial treatment, lame massage and finally terrible hand job all in about 40 mins. I gave her the 500, 000 only because I promised it to her beforehand, and went to leave.

Not so simple, after some discussions outside, suddenly there are three gangsters in the room, the main one lights up a cigarette and presents me with a trumped up handwritten invoice for 1. 8 million itemising the facial, bath scrub, cup of tea and other misc bullshit. The sudden realization that you are in a scam is a very sobering experience I can tell you, and having the three pimps blocking the exit, well you can imagine, one minute you're having a shit massage, massage the next minute you're in a be grade gangster film. I tried disputing the bill, but I knew where this was headed, I was their ATM machine today, after a few minutes I agreed to pay a further 1. 5 million which was about all I had in my wallet. I was 300, 000 ($13. 84) short of their invoice and the gangsters didn't like it. So surreal to see these guys operate their scam face to face. I suppose a bog standard extortion and hostage setup till the bill is paid. They talked about it not being their money, it was their bosses money, did they want me to call the big boss? I didn't like the sound of that.

So they basically kidnapped me and took me to the ATM by taxi. 2 of them plus a random driver 4 in the cab, heading to an ATM in a very public street in broad daylight. My head was spinning. 4 days earlier I had heard about an aussie leb that had been driven to an outer suburb ATM while pissed at night, then he had to empty his account at knifepoint. But I had to calm my nerves and think what to do. This was a small time scam, $90, certainly not worth starting a scuffle. Police advice is always to do what they say. If you do start something, move towards the road where you can attract attention. The guys were not big, but for gangsters; winning a street fight is a point of honour. What kind of gangster wants to lose a street fight to a tourist? I was also unsure of what weapons they were carrying if any, but I would not have been at all surprised at all to see a knife come out of a pocket if things went bad. In hindsight, these guys were conscious of the fact that I could have guided police back to their shop, so they didn't want to rob me, that really worked in my favour as I had a credit card in my wallet. I was thinking of ways to throw the credit card away in the gutter before they got to it. Maybe I could run but that would likely end in a scuffle or fight, where they would likely want revenge as well. At the ATM they were trying to look inconspicuous about 6m away from me and didn't try to get my pin.

Local people in the street were looking at us, they knew something was not right, but they didn't do anything helpful. The ATMs were not working we tried 3. Thank Christ my Australian bank set a limit on my daily withdrawal. I showed them the error message each time. Finally back in the cab just driving around slowly as I tried to explain the daily limit using sign language their English was rubbish. Finally they called the big boss, and his English was better so I spoke to him on the phone. He asked how much I had already paid. 2 million I said. 500 to the girl and 1500 to the gang. Come on, I tried to bargain with him, it's enough already! He more or less agreed and after speaking with the pimp clowns they agreed I could be released, I ended up joking with them 2 million! Its good for you. What a fucking relief. But I wasn't out of the woods yet. They left me with the random cabbie, who one gangster had given detailed instructions earlier during the drive, suddenly he didn't want me to get out either, but I was way less afraid of him. Likely they instructed him to find the name of my hotel which none of them knew so far, I showed him my empty wallet, but he still didn't want me to get out. So I jumped out, ran away and hailed a second cab. Jumped in the second cab like something out of a Jason Bourne film and laid down in the back and told him go, go go! We took off with the other cab in pursuit. I still had no money so after about 5 k's I threw my last 20k on the front seat jumped out when he stopped at the light, sprinted off into an alley with cab in pursuit. Turns out the alley was a dead end and a second cab had joined the pursuit, possibly the gangsta cab, couldn't be sure. Neither of them wanted to fight, so I just bolted out of the dead end and escaped into a nearby high end mall. I don't think they saw where I went. I holed up in the mall for an hour to regroup and figure out what to do next. I was still ten k's away from my hotel and no money.

After an hour I walked back to the hotel through the afternoon heat. The whole thing only cost me $2 million, so all a bit silly really. Lessons learned: Never use massage parlours in Hanoi. Always have a limit on your ATM daily withdrawal. Being a walking ATM is not a joke, it is a fact. You are a legitimate target in Vietnam.

200 Yen Phu does not exist as far as I can tell. You still haven't even covered your entry ticket at the Fortuna for that price.

Anyway, this isn't an Oasis review, so back to Fortuna. My girl was very cute and nice, and the massage was excellent. We chatted (in Vietnamese, I don't think she can speak English) for a long time, and the whole experience was very relaxing. At the end of the massage, she wanted 1m for an HJ. Which we all know is just out of the park expensive. She said it was because girls in other spas would have 2-3 customers a day, but she was lucky if she had even one. Tam quats offer you the best and worst of Hanoi P 2 P. Well, I managed to find this place. Finally. It is actually on my way to work, and I just figured out it is on a small side street off the main road. Not too far from Cau Giay street. Basically, off of Cau Giay street, onto Tran Thai Tong, it will be on a small street on your left. I forget which one exactly, but it is there, not so far away. The building has a sign but I didn't see it the first time I looked.

My experience was mixed. I was excited to find another good VIP massage close to my work, but my service was only so-so.
