I only had two nights to be in Saigon and most of the first two days were booked with business. My hotel had been booked for me so I got to the airport gave the driver the name and he took me to a nice place but I quickly realized it was a government hotel and that there would be little if any hope of having any fun there.
With one night left I decided to walk around and ended up spotting a place that looked like it was a massage or spa. I went in and ended up asking to get a massage which started out very strange with this guy showing me the lockers and some type of mineral pool to swim in. Let's keep these prices under control. The going rate for all nighters has risen recently to US$60 or 1,000,000 VD and the hotel should be about US$25. A year ago it was $40 and $20 for the same. Not sure about short timers but I would expect about $40.

I think you may have miss read what I said. I said that the girls ASK for about $60 ST in the more touristy bars, by that I mean the ones on Hai Ba Trung near the Caravelle, like Na Na, 49 etc. Yes you would then negotiate from there, but the girls in these touristy bars are very hard nosed negotiators and play every trick in the book to extract the max. The best I've ever got there is $40 short time, the negotiation skills not being helped by being very pissed (drunk for our American friends). I usually stay in one of the larger hotels which is is not girl friendly so have to go to one of the short stay hotels with their added cost. Bit rough when that increases the base cost by 50%.
I notice one of your previous posts that states this very fact in these bars, but the best you got was $50. The first time I ever went to HCMC and to one of these bars was maybe about this time last year, so never got to experance the $20 root that you said it once was.
Based on that 1,000,000 for what the poster got is very reasonable indeed. I would love an experiance like that one and would pay that for LT no problems and without a short time hotel fee too. Wonder what the old mum would have said if she saw the action going on under her roof!!! lol.

This is funny Sudsoz, Keep prices under control!! Have you noticed that the inflation rate in VN is very high, everything is going up, not just the hobby.
Look there is a basic concept taught in the VN Communist school system. it sounds like this "get what you can and as much as you can and get it now" You are right on with the Negotiate plan, but the basic element of greed is strong. I almost got robbed of a million dong (about $65 US) last night. A young, attractive girl approached me on a motorbike in District 1 on a motorcycle. She offered a massage and full service for $10. I have been chasing business in Vietnam for about 4 years now with infrequent visits but I have listened to the advice of others who have spent more time there.
One of my issues is that I am not getting any younger and I prefer LT arrangements rather than a quicky without the morning glory.
A few weeks ago some of the bars were trying to impose a drinks minimum as an effective bar fee as well as the money for the girl. They backed off when I refused and made to leave.

If you read the forum you will find that in Hanoi and HCMC the big hotels all have various forms of prohibition on bringing vistors. The Renaissance was reported to be charging for an extra room.
In most of the small local hotels (say under $30 per night) there is no problem - they will hold the girls ID and make sure everything is OK when she goes.
You can also use these small hotels on a short time basis or there are a number of 'love hotels' available sort time.
I don't like the temporary nature of the love hotels and stay in the small local places. The service is actually very good and very friendly. If I have meeting I just use the lobby of one of the big ones.
Apart from someone spruiking on this forum a few months back I have never heard of an escort service in VN.
If you want to stay within the 5* confines then the bar on top of the Caravelle may serve your needs. But buyer beware.

was in hcm from 21st to 23rd. A mixed mongering adventure. Stayed in duxton. Did Not try Xanadu (the health club in the hotel) as do not find it worthwhile when you can get better quality outside at a cheaper rate.

Again, relying on some previous posts, I asked to go to the Palace hotel. Cost per evening was $40 USD for walk in reservations.
The cabbie that had driven me to the hotel was pretty helpful and offered to show me around. I know viet and he seemed friendly enough so I took him up on the offer. I asked him if he knew of a good massage place. He did and off we went. Not sure of the name but it is in the direction of the statue of christ by the shoreline. We had to drive up a steep inclined driveway to get to it.
In total, it came out to about $35 USD for a 1.5 hour session. I would recommend skipping the steamroom session to give you more time to play. The girl and the massage were both average. The service afterwards was unremarkable and easily forgetable. Perhaps I was just unlucky that time.

If a masseur only has one massage per day, and receive 100,000 VND per massage, that mean she can earn 3,000,000 VND or equivalent to a university graduate (with the exchange rate of 16,000VND = 1USD).
Of course, a masseur may have more than one session per day. And I don't know what is masseurs' problem when you tip them 100,000 VND and they don't appreciate it.

Because people (especially VK and Westerners) have spoiled them, period! Now they know 100,000 is only $6 in US and massage in US is at least $60/hr. They are also good actresses and trying to get more money from you. Another factor is supply and demand. District 1 is expensive so expect to pay more. At Caravelle the pimps/girls never yield to lower price even I speak Vietnamese and bargain hard! They know they can still have other suckers (who only listen to their little brothers) to agree to their outrageous fee.
If you are in Hue you will be shocked to know that a 5-hour cyclo cruise around the city only costs you $4 while you have to pay 4X to 5X of such amount if you hire a driver near a big hotel. Hint: just walk out and away from the hotel you will find many cyclo drivers not associated with the hotel and you can have a good deal. So the same principle applies here. Stay away from the massage in the hotel and find cheaper places in the city.

I was in HCMC for the first time in June. Stayed for 2 weeks. As a "newbie" to SEA, I was taken to a club in town called GOSSIP. You may want to try it out. Very nice place and outstanding treatment by staff. Any taxi driver will know where it is. The place is always loaded with "pros" and "non-pros". They are easy to spot, just look for any table with several females not accompanied by males. They will definitely be making eye contact with you since you will most likely be the only non-Asian customer. Negotiate as best you can. They always start out at $80.00US for ST and $100.00US for all night. There are definitely 9's and 10's but I still find that TOO PRICEY! I did meet one gorgious 22 yoa that had just started "working" and negotiated 4 days/3 nights (24/7) for $300.00US. Definite bargain in my opinion. She wasn't very experienced and had to be taught a few things but was eager to always please. That's what I like! Bonus - she was my personal tour guide for 4 days. The BW Chancery is a very long hike from the action areas of District 1 and being a western chain will almost certainly mean no take home action. If you RTFF using the search function you will find a lot of references to hotels near the action. With a bit of diligence you can find a alternate hotel that suits you better and earns you some brownie points because it is cheaper.

You are encountering problems many of us faced on the initial visits to Vietnam. However, Vietnam is one of very few countries where time and patience really do pay off. Finding a steady "girlfriend" type will save you lots of money and frustration in the long run. However, there are quite a bit of establishments for those whose time is a constraint but be forwarned that you will not get the same "bang for your buck" as Thailand. Most of the cute "regular girls" you find on the street in HCMC are either dating someone or the mistress of someone. More likely the latter than former. The best way to monger there is find a local who you trust (easier said than done) that knows the scene. Mongering on your own without knowledge of the language will just bring about more frustration. Karaoke bars, discos, massage parlors, bars, etc. all will cost money. The key to these places is tip and treat the "mamma son" well. That and always say no when the girl is not to your taste. It may seem harsh sometime but you will never know what is behind door number two if you don't inquire. Motorbike girls are good quickie but you must always pick the hotel (and don't pick from the list the girl recommends) and pay at the end. Watch the wallet of course.

I do not think I have ever seen any really tall girls in HCMC although I know one or two in Hanoi. It may be that you are looking for something that does not exist or is very rare.
As for the massage places I have found that most of the staff will meet you outside so if you do get one you like a deal can be done. The lack of choice is hard to deal with I agree.
HCMC is not a hotbed of commercial sex like the Suk area in BKK and the People's Committee try their best to keep it that way.
One of the upsides of this is that the people are friendly and you are not hassled by touts at every laneway and corner.

Most girls at the disco or the massage parlor would go out with you for money. They give you the number. But they also give their number to other customers. That means you are not the only person who call the girl late at night. And of course, you may also have more than just a number.
Going to Vietnam is like shopping at the flea market or garage sales. It has the "lucky" element that either frustrates or interests the buyers. If you like to shop at the mall, Vietnam is not your place.

Thanks for the replies. First of all, BBS means barber shop.
I have met 4 girls so far through Vietsingle, and had messages from many more that didn't turn into meetings. Often they write to you but then their lack of English frustrates them and they don't follow through.
In every case, the girl you meet ends up looking much worse than her picture. I think most of the pictures on Vietsingle are heavily retouched and shot at angles designed to minimize bad features. The first one I met had bad acne that had been photoshopped out of her picture. Another that I met last week, I was very excited about, from her picture. She looked like the kind of youthful white-skinned, ample busted goddess I really go for. But when we met, her skin was about 10 shades darker than in her picture and leathery, she had wrinkles around her eyes, her nose was broader than in the picture, and I was really disappointed. (Somehow she got the impression that I liked her and has been pestering me with SMS messages ever since). She also wrote that she was 36 in her profile but, in person, admitted that she was 42. (I can't condemn her for that, because I'm also lying about my age, but, at least, I look young enough that my lie is credible).
One girl I met through Vietsingle did prove to be attractive, though not as attractive as her picture. After we met, she said she wanted to go out with me the next day, and to meet her at 20:00. Well I was there, and she didn't show up. Then the following day she SMSs me like nothing had happened, and asks "what are you doing?" I said why did you stand me up and she said "Don't angry me. I am sick." Well, I don't suppose I'll ever really understand what that was all about. I would continue to pursue her except that I think she's really not the right type for me. She's 5'3", my minimum height for a girl, but too slight, weighing only 105 pounds. That usually means they have narrow hips, and it will be difficult for them to accommodate a big guy without pain. So now I realize that in addition to a girl being minimum 5'3" she has to have a minimum weight at least 115 or 120 pounds.
As for really tall girls, they don't have to be really tall, just not really short. I can live with 5'3". Even better is 5'5". I had a bit of trouble sorting this location. HBT is Hai Ba Trung and I think TMK is Nguyen Thi Minh Khai.
I think this is the location of a fancy dance bar called Liquid that I have never been into.
Also curious for more info. If based on your analysis, it should be Liquid. Liquid is not a fancy dance bar, rather its just like any other disco in HCMC. Usually catered to the locals and of course there are Working Ladies/freelancers. I think it can be comparable to Rainforest. Never been there before becuase most of the time I hang out on the other side of D1, nicknamed by us as the "Pussy Triangle".
However have heard about it from frends and it dosent really sound that exciting, but since its Friday, might make a trip there tonite to scout the place out.
On a seperate note. If by any chance any of you guys can't pick up any companionship for the night at Liquid, heres another tip;
Wen you walk out of Liquid, turn left into Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street. At the junction turn right and walk upwards towards District 3. Along Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, you will encounter HCMC'see infamous Pussy on Wheels, this is where they all are located and they will be riding up and down the street. Soemtimes, they will be just standing along Nguyen Thi Minh Khai waiting to be picked up.
However, do be careful as I am sure some of the horror stories of guys being robbed, etc etc have been posted before.

But I am cery certain the minimum amount is VND3mil. All the other gers happily accepted what was given to them by my friends without any complains which happened to be the same amount I gave.

Have spent the last hour plus reading through the postings dated from yr 2006 and after and I hope that I can help to answer some queries regarding bringing gers back to your hotel.
Veitnam is still a communist country therfore there are some strict guidelines regarding unmarried couples spending the nite in a room. Not only hotels buit jus to let you know, unmarried couples are not allowed to stay in a room even if its in a residential property.
Most hotels have a curfew of 11pm. meaning that you are not allowed to bring a ger back into your hotel room after 11pm. some hotels have the curfew as early as 9pm. As long as you bring the ger in before this time it is ok. You would still have to register her meaning she has to show her ID card etc etc and than go up with you. She can stay overnite provieded you bring her into your room before the curfew, better in the late afternoon and she stays in the room till the next day. how i know this was becuase i helped to arrange a ger for a friend who was staying in New World Hotel. I walked into the hotel and straight up into my friend's room without any troubles. but this was in the late afternoon about 3pm. please bear in mind that this night not work in the early evening/nite.
Another way to overcome this problem is to pay for another room. This means that one room is registered in her room wnd the other is in your name. whether she sleeps in it they dont care. The reason they want to do it this way is that the hotel can cover their own ass in case of police raids.
This is because a week before the last liberation day celebrations, a very popular "lovers" hotel in Binh Thanh market was raided and about 40 people got arrested. regardless of the fact you are a guy or ger, you will still end up in the police station.
If all else fails, there are alot of mini hotels located on street behind Binh Thanh Market that you can book for an overnite jiggy jiggy. will go scout out the area and try to get as much info as possible.
My best bit of advice is this;
When you check into a hotel. Just ask the receptionist / front desk that you would have a lady friend / ger friend joining you later in the evening and see wat she/he says.
Most importantly, do not explain why you are bringing back different gers every night.

Well, I posted the following followup report six days ago, but somehow it did not get posted:
Well I went walking there again yesterday. Yes, it's the same corner as Liquid. But it was on TMK, not on HBT. In other words, when you walk out of Liquid, go left, then make another left onto TMK. I am not sure if it's the same building as Liquid, or an adjacent building, but the scene I saw was around the corner from Liquid, and it was at 5 PM, when there's nobody in Liquid. So, it wasn't Liquid. Funny, I've been unable to figure out just what I saw, and there doesn't seem to be any karaoke there, unless it's unmarked and hidden.
I did go in Liquid last night for a few minutes. I really hate discos. I hate the deafening music. It was all Viets in groups. I didn't see any pickup possibilities, though a few girls smiled at me, but I think they were with groups of guys. Girls smile at you all the time in VN, I think it usually doesn't mean anything, they are just amused at seeing a foreigner.
I also walked up TMK at about 20:30-21:00, and for the first time I did notice some girls. Most of them were standing on the street, to my surprise. One or two were on motorbikes. I thought I saw a good looking one standing on the street, but passed her by as I wanted to walk up the street further. When I finally returned she was gone.
These girls were mostly not near the Mitsubishi dealer, but several blocks before it.
I also went over the bridge where I heard girls hang out. There weren't any there.

In Vietnam the age of consent is 18, but the overriding factor is the age of consent in your country of origin. For instance, in the United States, the age of consent is 18 so your partners must be 18 no matter where you go.

You're right, most hotels with more than 2+ stars not GFE. I had local colleague confirm Somerset before I booked - surprising since most occupants are families on long term lease. But it's quiet after 10 pm and before 7:30 am.
And the comment re the condoms is true story - my client and had two girls in his two bedroom unit and only two condoms btw us - so I called downstairs and asked if the guard could go buy some - 10 minutes later got a dozen :) RLMAO

I went by there at 8:30 PM Sunday and there were about six or seven girls, some riding, some standing. They are not just two blocks east of Cach Mang, however, they are on the whole length of Tu Xuong. One or two cute ones but nobody my type.
Afterwards I went past the Independence Palace around 9:30 PM. Nobody there. I have seen the action there at 11:30 PM, but it really must start late.

As for prices it seems to me that the regular bar girls rate is still $60 for long time although some of the bars are trying to apply a drinks levy or even a bar fine. I walked out several times a week or so ago.
The upmarket bars like Catwalk and Casino Royale seem to have $150 as the asking rate for short time only. The girls or the system seem to have problems with long time but will negotiate to $100 for short time. My experience is that the service is then very rushed and full of limitations.

Can confirm what Sudsoz says. U2 still going strong,even saw a western couple sitting in there a few months ago. Hard rock has been gone a long time now. The girly bar further down is next to Shadow Bar ,been in once for a short time but nothing spectacular in there and left after one drink.

There is a nice massage+ HJ place in district 3 on Dien Bien Phu Street (near where it intersects with Vuon Chuoi Street). The girls are cute and friendly and will let you touch them freely. Each girl is assigned a number and she will usually tell you to ask for her number when you return. The price is 50,000 VND plus a 100,000-200,000 VND tip for the girl. (The locals only pay 100,000VND, but the girls will try to get you to pay 200,000VND if you are a foreigner). I asked some locals how much they earn in a day. A waitress in a very nice restaurant (the kind you go to on special occassions) told me she earns 40,000 VND for eight hours of work. A high school teacher with a university education told me that she earns 60,000 VND a day. A girl who worked as a tour guide told me she earns 100,000 VND a day. So tipping 100,000 for one hour of service is plenty although the girl may pretend otherwise.

I just returned from another visit to Vietnam and thought it was time for me to contribute to the forum instead of just being an observer. My favorite massage location in HCM City is the Lido Health Club located at 265 Pham Ngu Lao St. in Dist. 1. The Lido Health Club can be found on the 2nd floor of the Que Huong - Liberty 4 Hotel. Telephone #848-836-4556.
The facility is extremely nice and very clean. The facility offers dry sauna, wet sauna, hot tub and cool tub along with showers. The cost of a massage is 100,000 VND and additional foot/leg massage is 50,000 VND. Most of the girls are attractive and friendly. The service is always fantastic. Tips usually run 100,00 VND for a massage and 150,000-200,000 for massage with happy ending. The girls will ALWAYS ask if you want the happy ending. The girls always try to up the tip as they do everywhere so keep in mind that the tip is at the discretion of the customer. I have only had to speak to management about one girl demanding a specific tip. She thought I was an uninformed foreigner and demanded $30.00 US. The girl was fired on the spot and I have not seen her working again. The management is very attentive to the foreign customer. The Lido Health Club is an upscale massage facility with excellent customer service.

Just FYI to travelers to HCM City.
I was in HCM City from October 14-21. I always stay at the same GF hotel and never have any problems. During my last visit, the hotel staff informed me that the police had been making nightly checks at many of the hotels. They explained that the police were checking for foreigners with VN girls staying in their rooms overnight. The staff advised that I may have to have an additional room if I were having any overnight guests. I thought the staff was possibly trying to make some extra money even though this had never happened in the past. Two days later the police showed up at the hotel and made a quick check. I just returned from another trip to HCM City and thought I would pass along some information on one of my favorite restaurants.
Com Nieu Sai Gon Restaurant is located at 59 Ho Xuan Huong Street in District 3. Telephone #848-930-2888. The food is great and the service is outstanding. The restaurant offers a very large selection of dishes at very good prices. A party of 4 can eat a very large meal with drinks for about 300,000 VND. The service is better than any other restaurant I have visited in HCM City. Give it a try and I think all of you will truly enjoy the dining experience.
I almost forgot to mention the many beautiful VN girls that also dine at the restaurant. An additional treat!

I was in HCM City from October 14-21. I always stay at the same GF hotel and never have any problems. Can confirm what Sudsoz says. U2 still going strong,even saw a western couple sitting in there a few months ago. Hard rock has been gone a long time now. The girly bar further down is next to Shadow Bar ,been in once for a short time but nothing spectacular in there and left after one drink.
The bar next to Shadow Bar is now closed for renovations. Who knows if it will re-appear? Shadow Bar has no p4p. U2 is still there but no upstairs action.
Earlier this year I wondered into the Bar Sai Gon around the corner from the Caravel. There were about 20 ladies to pick from, over half 6 or above (IMO). Left with a girl names Ni Na (a solid 8.5) for $40usd and went to a mini hotel. All in all a good time with a very cute girl who seemed to enjoy what she was doing. My only complaint is having to use the mini hotel. Part of me was always waiting for the cops or someone to show up.

On Dong Du the only one I know with p4p is just down from Hai Bai Trung but I never knew the name. The mamasan there is very reasonable and the girls are good.
There are a couple of regular bars opposite including the Cafe Latin with lots of sport on the TV's.
I have it on good authority that unfortunately the bar your talking about on Dong Du is about to shut down in a month or two. The internet 2 doors down shut down recently after 7 years there and Cafe latin has a month before relocation. I am afraid a ridiculous increase in rental prices may change this area dramatically in the years to come but who knows.

The bar that used to be on Mac Thi Boui at the opposite end of the street to U2 has closed and is being renovated for a restaurant. I found some of the same ladies in a new location near the river a few doors down from the Riverside and the 17 Cowboy bar. Had a Hard Rock syle sign out front. Mamasan wanted VD1,000,000 for an inhouse BJ. I told her and the girl that was ridiculous and walked out. Your theory about rental pressure may be correct.

Tips usually run 100,00 VND for a massage and 150,000-200,000 for massage with happy ending. The girls will ALWAYS ask if you want the happy ending. The girls always try to up the tip as they do everywhere so keep in mind that the tip is at the discretion of the customer. I have only had to speak to management about one girl demanding a specific tip. She thought I was an uninformed foreigner and demanded $30.00 US. The girl was fired on the spot and I have not seen her working again. The management is very attentive to the foreign customer. The Lido Health Club is an upscale massage facility with excellent customer service.

From what I hear the whole of the Mac Thi Boui and Dong Du areas are likely to be redeveloped over the next few years with the result that a number of smaller bars and restaurants will have to move. Let's hope they stick together because the concentration of choices is good.
Had to spend a few days in Saigon on business last week. Unfortunately, was stuck with business partners the whole time, including dinner parties, etc. Couldn't really explore the night life on my own. However, did form a couple of opinions:
1. VN girls are really good looking. For some reason, they are leggier and have more "Eurasian" features than most other Asian women. Maybe some French blood got into the gene pool over the years? But VN women are definitely stunning. I can now understand why so many American soldiers came home with VN wives during the war.

Well said! Most if not all of the SE Asian women (maybe with the exception of Japan and North Korea) are what you described above. I believe it has a lot to do with family influence. For example, when you marry an Asian girl you are in many ways taking on the financial responsibility for her family like it or not. You are EXPECTED to provide financial support to her family. There are two issues with massage joints in HCMC. You are not able to select the girl and they have this ridiculous locker and shorts thing going.
At the massage at the Grand Hotel on Dong Khoi you can at least bypass the shorts thing and there are a couple of nice ladies that you can sample and ask for next time.
120k + 150k is about it today for a furtive HJ. If the girl takes a risk to do a little more then a bit more tip is appropriate.
There was a recent police crackdown the other day here among the small GF hotels. The president was in town and they did a typical sweep berfore hand and scared the GF hotels into "watching it" for the next few days. However, the GF hotel I am at still let them in before 11 pm as long as they were out by 12. NO LT for the time being. So it just shifted my strategy a bit and got them in before 11 pm for the ST. Otherwise, go to Mini hotel. I choose not to go as it adds another $10-20 USD on to the total.
HBT bars are ok. One thing about bar fines is that at 49 and 51, the mamasan insists on the 6 drink "bar fine". The others will let you have just one drink and go. The girl must pay the balance of the bar fine when she gets back. Better her then me. 51 actually has a room upstairs when in a pinch.
Street action at night, go around the Bong Sen or Sheraton after 11 pm in disctrict 1. Some girls randomly walking around or riding on motorbikes looking for action. THey will spot you and eye you if you jsut hang out for a bit. They will also be around the Careville out front driving. Just hang out, sit on side of street inconspicous and they will approach. Usually after 10-11. Some nice ones can be found with patience.

Went to Yawarda thai massage just across Sheraton. Went up 10 min. before closing. No customers were up there so I was only one. Could bargain for more if you like as nobody around to check whats going on. After bargaining, this one stripped down all the way, autoroam, play with anything!

In other words, the girls usually insist that the cost is 300k. One even told me the caucasian cost was 300k, while the asian cost was 200k. I responded that I pay caucasian women 300k, while only pay asian women 200k, which confused her greatly.
I can usually get them down to 200k but their attitude is typically not so good, nor is mine, after all the hysteronics. I once had a girl at the Bong Seng Hotel on DK refuse when I stuck to 200k, and she was not even so hot. I think when they get a caucasian they think they've deserve more based on bullshit stories they tell each other and the general fleece the foreigner attitude in VN and elsewhere. I also hear them brag about the what the japanese give them. In the near future, I may go to 250k or 300k PROVIDED I get to touch everywhere, etc. (which sometimes occurs for the lesser amount).

Joe Bob --- You did it even better than locals. However, it also depends on locations which determine how much you should pay. On the outskirts of SG there are places you can tip the girls only 60K and get a bbbjtcim.
1ball --- Phu Quoc is an island where mongering activity is very limited. In order to find girls in these unfamiliar areas you should try to be friendly to the bellboys at your hotel (hopefully you don't choose a state-owned hotel). Tip them 20K to 30K and then ask them to bring girls to your room. Do not try to go by yourself to other places (far away from the hotel where you stay) because you can get hurt. Sometimes you can get girls from motocycle drivers. Ask them to bring the girls to your room.

1ball: I can't answer your question accurately enough because I've never been in PQ. However, I have been in small cities/districts and these areas are difficult to find girls. The reason is that good or decent looking girls go to big cities to meet people like us and they DON'T want to work in their home town for being afraid of bringing shame to their families. There are possibly some little bars for you to have drinks, and hopefully, some girls to flirt with. But I am not so sure. Local girls don't go out with strangers, let alone foreigners. To have better chance you must stay longer (weeks or months) or go to Saigon.

Rules for HCMC.
#1 do NOT stay in 2,3,4,5 star hotels. Stay in small GF hotel that is less than $30 per night.
#2 do not go to places like Catwalk or Club Renaissance unless you want to fork out over US$100 for a primma donna. Same with call for delivery.
#3 scout the bars but avoid those bars where the mamasan is greedy. You can still get LT with good lookers for $50-60 but some of the mamas either want more or want 5-6 minimum lady drinks.
#4 negotiate with bar girls and massage girls to meet outside
#5 keep an eye out for nice freelancers around the D1 area.
In HCMC you can not just walk up and pay for action as easily as LOS. It akes a little more patience and negotiating. On the other hand I have found that much more freindly experiences can be had without the problems of flighty pro bar girls.

I have gone through 30 or so pages, and it seems things are all over the place. Can you elaborate a little on your point number 3? I am used to LOS, and JKT, where you can go to different bars, have a few drinks and a few laughs, nego directly with a girl, and off you go. it seems not to work that way in Vietnam. I am not interested in having a girl knock on my door, i like a bit of "let's get to know each other" first. So where can we find this, if at all? Also what is the best area to stay in to be farily close? The Chief - Just FYI. I am caucasian but have worked in a Vietnamese community in the States for more than 10 years. I have learned the culture very well and have many Vietnamese friends. When in Vietnam, you must remember it is nothing more than a "game" or sort of like haggling on the price of a car. Caucasians are at a disadvantage from the beginning so you must remember how the game is played. The massage girls are superb players no matter how young. They usually start with the sweet smiles and giggles while sizing you up. This will usually get the typical caucasian to drop his guard down a notch or two. Then the broken English small talk begins which will almost always include, "This you first time Vietnam?". If you answer yes, they automatically assume you are uninformed and your price for HJ/Happy Ending just went up. The massage girls always start negotiations high but will always come down. Remember, the massage girls are typically hustling 12-14 hours each day. It is no accident that the Happy Ending tip negotiation doesn't begin until you are laying there with your tool at attention. The girls know at this point you just want relief and you are more vulnerable to overpaying just to get that much needed release. I can't fault the girls for hustling. I too want to get paid as much as possible for my work. Then again, when I spend my hard earned dollar I want the best quality for the lowest price obtainable. I suggest going in with a set price in mind and stick with it. I always do and always leave happy. Hope this helps!!

Goober - I apologize for taking so long to respond.
The police came to my hotel lobby and simply checked passports along with VN identification cards. They were checking to make sure there were enough rooms for the number of passports and ID cards held at the front desk. The staff at my hotel get nervous rather quickly these days since one of the night time clerks was arrested earlier this year for promotion of prostitution (pimping). He was working at another hotel the night he was arrested so it hasn't brought any unwanted attention to my favorite hotel. The guys there are still a little jumpy at times.
Just a suggestion. When my buddy and I travel together we always stay in separate rooms. If our hotel insists on our overnight guests having their own room then we rent one room for the girls to share and split the cost between the two of us. Of course, the girls never use the room but all of the bases are covered.

The easiest solution to your problem would be to take a taxi to a disco called GOSSIP. I don't remember the exact address but it is in Dist. 1 or very close. All of the taxi drivers will know the place. It is a nice place but the techno music is a bit loud for my taste. The staff will treat you very well and the place is loaded with pro and semi-pro working girls. You can't miss. Just remember to make repeated eye contact with any female that interests you and does not have a male companion. They will let you know if they are mutually interested by the same constant eye contact and then a smile or giggle. At that point, the only thing left is price negotiation. They will always start at $80.00 US for ST and $100.00 US (1.6 million VN) for LT or all night. Some will come down in price and some will not. The club closes at midnight so you can wait until the last couple of songs and usually get a better deal. Some money is better than no money for the night!! The selection of girls has always been outstanding when I have gone. This is not your cheapest avenue in HCMC but one of the easiest when in a bind.

I have to agree with Sudoz's advice ,his informaion has always been spot on.I have personally withdrawn[ most of the time ] from mongering in Ho Chi Minh City due to my personal circumstances here ,mainly now Phnom Penh and Bangkok.
The area you are talking about is Pham Nga Lao, One Ball , I was down there last weekend with some friends on last weekend and the going rate with a good looker was 700,000--1 mill long time.Be careful tho lots of druggies.
I agree with Sudoz, good girls in many bars HBT and Smilies etc but get their numbers, much cheaper [good for daytime action 2]

I am used to LOS, and JKT, where you can go to different bars, have a few drinks and a few laughs, nego directly with a girl, and off you go. it seems not to work that way in Vietnam. I am not interested in having a girl knock on my door, i like a bit of "let's get to know each other" first. So where can we find this, if at all? Also what is the best area to stay in to be farily close? The girls in the bars (as distinct from freelancers in discos) are tied to the bar and the mamasan controls prices and negotiations. Some of the bars have recently been trying to impose a minimum lady drinks level before you go out - effectively a bar fine. But 6 LD can be US$60 and the same again for the girl makes it very expensive. Others are just trying to push the prices up - one recently wanted $80 for a SYT and would not negotiate. But there are atill several that are more reasonable about it.
Compared to LOS the girls in Vietnam seem a little more natural and less commercial but if the prices go up then they become less attractive.
There are a number of small GF hotels near Benh Than market an more near the backpackers area but I prefer the small hotels in the centre of Dictrict 1 around Mac Thi Boui and off Hai Bai Trung.

I assume the bar owns the hotel and tries to avoid uncessary hassles. Thoughts? Horror stories? Reassurance?

I am a consultant and my VN clients are very happy that I choose to use the hotels on MBT. They sometimes get involved with the fun. We often use the facilities of the Renaissance and Sheraton iof it suits for meetings etc etc but I don't bother staying there.
These small hotels offer excellent and very personalised service, they have internet access that works quite well and are really quite comfortable.
Not quite the same as the Marriot or the Westin in BKK I must admit.

There are FL bars like Acopolypse (spelling) which is a noisy time wasting affair and I am hearing of others such as Gossip that I intend to check out next time I am in town.
However there is nothing like Orchard Towers in Singapore or the Nana car park in BKK.
Over time I have developed private arrangements with bar girls and massage girls and I am sure others can do the same with a bit of diligence and patience.
Then there are things like the SYT marketing executive who diligently put her mammaries in my face while I activated her Wi-Fi in the coffeee shop! You can never plan those.

It appeared to me that it would be possible to take a lady from the club and go directly to the guest rooms without going anywhere near the ground floor reception. Of course you would not have the security of reception holding the ID.
The club was not open when I last stayed at Renaissance so I never tried.
Catwalk at New World has an upstairs section and possibly has a similar arrangement.
At Caravelle this can not happen because the top floor uses a separate elevator but at Sheraton it could also work.
Might be worth investigation for those of you who are so inclined.

It was possible to slip someone from the Saigon Bar back to your room. Instead of using the bar elevator go left and straight across to where the “Signature” rooms are. From there go down the hall and make a right to regular elevators. Sometimes the hotel will have a staff member right outside the bar door, making this impossible. But if no one is there, or you wait for them to leave, this will work. At least it worked for me about a year ago.
Mini-hotels on Le Lai street, Dist.1, are friendly and price starting 150-200k. Also Bui Thi Xuan street is okay. Some can be rent by hour.
I prefer freelancers in Gossip, Volcano, you can negociate for 1Mil for the night. A charmer can get as low as 500k. Talk to a few, get all their number and call the next day for coffee and negociate. Other clubs are Lu, Lush, Napoli/Aqua, Apo, Liquid, Qbar.
Street action such as Tu Xuong are cheap, 100-200k but no looker. In other districts, the pimp on bike calls out the girls for you to choose, you can find a jewel 300-500k for the night.
After midnight some will snack at restaurant Tan Hai Van on Nguyen Trai street, there you can have a good look and make a move.

What you are reading and the comparison you draw with China is dead right.
And yet we still hear of guys paying US$60 - $100 becuase it is 'so cheap'. Also watch out for bar owners with minimum lady drink requirements.
In the end it is all negotiable and the best thing to do is to walk away from a deal that is a bit rich.

As mentioned by Sudsoz, the club that is located behind Rennasaince Hotel is called Club Royal. The entrance is located on Ngo Duc Ke Street D1, it is not really connected to the hotel. If you are facing the Hotel entrance, its on your right hand side. It is owned by the same owner of Catwalk (International Tourist Club) The set up is very similar to Catwalk only on a very much smaller scale.
Club Royal is spread over 2 floors. The first floor is a simple bar with bar stools and sofa seats wrapping the wall with Open Karaoke concept. The 2nd floor has the same concept only with an additional area for a live band. Its is also on the second floor where the casino is located.
Quality of gers are considered second rated to Catwalk, at least in my opinion.

There was some inconclusive discussion of this a few months back. There are a lot of Japanese bars around Le Duan are where the very attractive girls seem to spill out at midnight. Some of these seem quite large and some quite small.
I went into one of the small ones about 6pm about a month ago and there were four women of varying degrees of unattractiveness and I was offered a BJ on the billiard table upstairs. I passed.
We need intelligence on these places but I suspect that take-out prices are quite high and we are seeing the flow over of this at the HBT bars and elsewhere.

First off do not expect to bring your date in and past the front desk as you go up to your room. My understanding is that the Windsor is Gov't owned and there is no hanky-panky.
The bar girls will be able to take you to various short time hotels that cost about $20 or so but I do not like these on grounds of cost security and comfort.
My suggestion is that if you decide tonight is the night you walk across the road a bit and check into one of the hotels in Mac Thi Boui (say $25 with breakfast) and go hunting from there.

From what has been said on these pages there seems to be an explosion in prices since I was there last.
What are prices like around Pham Ngo Lao St and the backpacker area.

In Guangzhou China, short time can be 200 yuan (25usd) and overnight 350-400yuan (50usd). But if you want highclass you have to pay 350-500yuan ST.
In HCM, short time can be 300k vnd (20usd) and overnight 500k-600k (40usd). Highclass can be had at 500-800k vnd (50usd) ST.
Price are comparable. And in both places you can find cheaper or more expensive. The problem with Vietnam is that you must negociate! They think they worth more because they are ignorant of outside world. Merchandise food services girls, you have to negociate. Girls in clubs often starts 100usd which is crazy, and they usually refuse if you basic bargain, so you must use art of negociation. It's a pain compare to china.
In hcm, if you want cheap you have to go outside district 1,3,5. You have to go with a local friend or xe om/taxi. They will bring you to area where macro calls the girls out for u to choose. It's a bit scarier and not really recommended for short business/vacation trip. 150-200k short time, 300-400k night.
Have been to VN approx 2 times per year for several years. Early years did the Paradise bar and Sun Moon bar thing (both no longer there), ending up at mini hotels for the night. Never a problem but always felt risky.
However, during those early years quite innocently?? developed ongoing dialogue with several non p4p girls (tailor shop, hotel reception, restaurant, and non p4p bars in HCMC, NhaTrang and DaLat).
now have several of the above meeting and traveling with me on my trips there. They can't go to a hotel in their home town, but everything is easy when they are bona fide travellers themselves. There was only one time some years ago when i had to sign some sort of form that we were "married" - this to get into the AnaMandara in NhaTrang!

Yes its the old Billiard Bar girls with a few extras. A few months back they moved to a location near the river past the Riverside and now they seem to have come back to town.
When I enquired they were making noises about a $20 bar fine. There was nothing special on offer at that time so I passed. I figure that making a protest about the price always improves your bargaining base next time.
Will try to get in there a bit earlier in the evening to see what they have on the shelves.
The same night (Saturday) the corner bar (HBT & MTB) had nothing spectacular and U2 had uglies.

Came back from a a quick trip to HCMC. Stayed at the Bong Sen on HBT. Was on business so much of mongering had to be done in a hurry so didn't negotiate best prices but this is what I got up to.
Day 1: Arrived about midday. Checked into hotel and then went out to Cafe Latin for lunch. Wandering back to hotel was beckoned into Bar 51 on HBT. Went in for a beer. An old ugly sat next to me and I told I wasn't interested. However girl serving behind the bar was young and cute. Asked her if she would sit with me. After a bit of negotiation was sat in the upstairs pool room getting BBBJ/CIM for US$25.
Business meetings that night but once I was on my own called in to Bar 49 (I think - couple of doors down from the afternoon blowjob bar). Was just going to have a drink and a fool around but I grabbed a good looker (8 on my scale) as I walked through the door - I never accept the next in line unless she is a looker, always choose my own. Decided I liked her so much that I would go with her to minihotel. US$40 I think but am a bit hazy (lots to drink at this point). Fancied something different so asked if she had a friend. Day 3: No action - flew home at lunchtime.
From talking to girls I think it would be OK to take them back to Bong Sen before 9pm. Will try next time.

The girl now turned extremely bitchy, started shouting and swearing at me and refusing to go unless I pay up and pay her first. Fuck it. I would never pay her up front for a dumb ugly fucking whoore with bad attitudes. I threatened to call the police. Long arguments ensued which the tour guide was not helping. The fucking pimp finally settled for half the bill for the worthless snacks that his *****s spoiled.
I just gave the asshole the money and got out of the shithole. The Vietnamese has to be the least honest people in all Asia if not the whole world. Fuck the Vietnamese KTV assholes and their ugly *****s who cheat their customers.

It's funny reading your post. First off, who the hell goes into a KTV to pick up girls. You deserve all you got and should've gotten a beaten for being that stupid. Blame your tour guide for sending you there. That's how the girls work in those ktv bars. If you were smart you would read some the post on here and find out where to get the connections.
The first big mistake you made was to go with a tour guide - anywhere.
The second was to not ask a few questions about KTV in Vietnam where the operations are clearly different to China.
The third is that you went to a dump that is more like a Bia-Om than a classy KTV.
If you RTFF you will find that there are many places to pick up ladies in HCMC and that high class ones can be had for a price at places like Catwalk.
The thing that you have still not discovered is that if you did get to take the girl out the chnaces are that your hotel would not have let her in.
Your insults to HCMC and its friendly people are completely unjustified and you need to learn from this incident that you need to investigate the lay of the land in a new place.

I agree completely. It's only wise to get the 'lay of the land' when going to any place new.
FWIW, in the past, I've had no problems with bringing a lady back to the Sofitel, but they were always dressed in normal street attire. I acted quite normally and walked straight in and to the elevators, like a normal couple.
I didn't care for Catwalk, but had girls from local KTV who met me after they finished work at 11pm.

These are usually run by gangsters and you are very lucky for even walking out of there with your limbs intact. If you called Mr. Blow Joe who lives in Timbuktu he could have told you about it. Wow..you were surprised that they tried to get one over you. That is a beer om place you went to. No one goes there by themselves to pick up girls. Cause you have to pay for the room fee, beer and snack. Usually poor vietnamese guys go there because it is cheaper for them. People with money go to the high class one with better girls and service. - Don't tryout any unknown ktv to you
- Only trust friends that already been that ktv
- Don't let driver or guide go in with you (coz u have to pay for them - girl+drinks
- If you are alone, simply dont go to ktv
- Go early about 7-8pm coz good places fills up very fast
- Ask price for an hour at current time. Usually no cover charge.
- Ask if price changes AFTER certain hour (they usually charge more at night)
- Ask them the time, make sure they got it right
- Ask price of different beers, henken, saigon, tiger,...
- They always bring a case (24?) but charge only what u drink
- Don't open anything or let anyone open anything until u choose a girl
- If you don't see a girl u like 1st batch, ask them to bring more
- If you don't see what u like, get out. You don't pay anything
- Stop the girl from opening beers and other stuff
- Make them understand u decide when and for who to open
- You can say share your bottle, and open new one if empty

In China forum OWL made many outragous comments and I was surprised why a senior was so naive. Now I understand who he is. In China similar scams are plenty. In a Bia Om place (there are similar small crappy KTV like this in China, too) the risk of getting robbed is extremely high. I got robbed (only a little to my standard) in a Bia Om place in Danang before. They overcharged me 50,000 dong for a beer, couple small bags of peanuts (210,000 dong total) so I only gave the motocycle guy 20,000 telling him to go back and get the money from there. He was pissed but actually went back and screamed the hell out to the owner. He told me the next morning when I was with him on the way to the train station. Well, I am fluent in Vietnamese so it made a big difference.
In Dalian China I got robbed like you. I knew I should have not gotten in such place but my stupid friend insisted. He and I ended up paying the thugs $100 for couple beers and 3 girls. A few months later I came back to the same place and spilled the whole content of an 8 oz crazy glue in the locks in front of their door. Ha ha.... I don't get mad I get even.
You deserved it OWL! You will get robbed even more as people like you'll never learn. If you want to blame anything blame yourself. For your peace of mind I only recommend you to think of it as a cheap lesson. It is rather $75 loss than a beating- up experience, right?
To Billy Ibrox: It may be true that the girls/thugs are afraid of cops more than we are but it is stupid to carry this mental attitude around as we (tourists) don't have time for such trouble. Although alot can be said about OWL's experiences, I think it also depends alot on which country and which tour group (as he had a tour guide) was used.
I've used tour groups in the past when I travel with several friends (just more convenient for group booking) in other countries and always knew the tour guide taking just us guys out at nite (leaving the rest of the tour group in the hotel) would make a commission wherever he took us. So he's getting paid extra for showing us a good time. Had one similar incidence at a KTV style place (in another country) trying to scam us but the difference was that the guide intervene and negotiated a fair price before it got out of hand. It was smart business on his part as he knew we could all tell the rest of the people in our tour group what happened , giving him a bad rap. and also complain to the tour company (where he could lose his nice commission job).
OWL's guide was an ass as he did nothing and didnt take care of his client. Since he was there, he could easily negotiated a fair settlement. Being the paid guide meant he also takes some blame as he didnt protect his client.--But then this is Vietnam and I had much better guides elsewhere (my experience: the bigger the tour company, the better the guides)---IMO

Everywhere you go in Vietnam, there are people trying to scam, short change or rip you off. Mongers will be lied to then robbed or ripped off.
In contrast, people in China, Thailand, Cambodia generally will do what they agree to do. I have never been ripped off in those countries. I had all good times and pleasant experiences outside of Vietnam. So use your judgement.

Vietnam's KTV will lie that they have many rooms upstairs for fuck and ask you to have a drink with the girl and wait. The truth is they do not have rooms for fuck on premises for fear of losing their karaoke license. Any sex with the girls have to be somewhere else, after their shift.
The minute you sit down with the girls, they will automatically open all sorts of drinks and food. After a while the girls will ask for VND 500K or US$35 to get a room. They will disappear with that money. They house will then send in the bills for drinks and food, upwards of VND 1Mil or US$60 per person. They would kill their own mothers for a few dollars, so you are fucked.
My karaoke girl in Hanoi did visit me a few times, but the owner knows the guide well, and then she was way too expensive.

I ran into a similar situation in Bali few years ago and got taken for about $100 US for 2 beers and one lady drink in a karaoke join. Why? I haven't been back there not because of that experience but because of some religious guys wanting to go to heaven to fuck 75 virgins or whatever. Infact, I have so much empathy for the people of Bali because its tourist industry is pretty much damaged.

I have been here in HCMC for about 4 and half days now. The girls are hot as hell. The prices are a little more than Thailand but not all that much more. Your reports and opinions were based on the low class KTV/Bia-oms which have been discussed previously in this forum as expensive rip-offs with a language barrier to foreigners getting any real satisfaction.
There is also a Japanese/Korean scene in KTV's in District one which has about 20 joints that have not been discussed in this forum for the reason that no-one knows enough about how they operate and what they cost.
The reason people got excited about your reports was that you used these limited experiences to proclaim on the scene on HCMC and even to generalise on the people of Vietnam.
There are plenty of reports in this forum of how foreigners of different extractions got satisfaction and pleasure in HCMC. You apparently chose to ignore them.
VN is great compared to the US only and great if you do your homework really well. But it is bad for greenhorns. Many season veterans don't come there to monger strictly either. Great is walking into a bar and there are 50 girls dancing half naked on the stage and you can walk out with any of them and your hotel won't charge you extra for having her over night.

the grope bars listed elsewhere here that are on hai ba trung and mac thi buoi streets are going strong, but rumor has it that the entire area is slated for redevelopment and all the leases will be lost in about two years’ time. bar owners are reluctant to talk about it, and i have no clue whether the bars will be relocated or simply closed.
bjs and full service are available onsite at most of them, most notably at u-2 on mac thi buoi, which has a sleaze factor rivaling star of light on patpong ii in bangkok. there, the deed is done in a darkened area at the rear of the bar in plain view of the door to the bathroom, where the ladies are constantly going in and out.

then i take several hotel cards with me on my evening search. if i find a girl i want to spend time with, i write the appointment time on the hotel card (along with the negotiated price), so there is absolutely no chance for misunderstanding and give it discreetly to the girl. i wait for her in the lobby the next day, and she almost always shows up. the front desk is expecting her, and there is very little chance for confrontation or embarrassment on anyone’s part.

this is a remake of the original gossip, which was a smallish dance club with live music and a lot of freelancers. my favorite feature of the old place was the sunken dance floor, around which, on the raised level, were a circle of bar stools used by many of the ladies. when dancing on the sunken floor, eye level was about the same as crotch level for the girls sitting in their miniskirts. a lot of kodac moments.

and a tiny bar named hien and bob’s, at the corner of hai ba trung and dong du streets. the bar is staffed by from two to four girl-next-door types, always wearing the ao dai long dress. this is not a pick-up bar, although over the years, most of the girls have been taken away by foreign husbands who first met them there. this is a full bar with western brands of liquor. you can have food brought in from local restaurants.
the girls will charm you, and if you play your cards right and pass the scrutinizing of owner hien-the-dragon-lady, the girls have been known to invite you home for the night.
but be advised, this isn’t likely to happen during one’s first, brief visit to saigon. hien and bob’s (bob is deceased), is an unusual island of quietude just a stone’s throw from u-2 and the hai ba trung meat markets. on the other hand, the occasional lout who insults the staff has been known to get a free cyclo ride to the saigon river, where he is summarily thrown in (the truth!), a fate worse than almost anything i can imagine.

Spent the last few days doing nothing but looking for tail. There is so much of that here, and a lot more than most people say there are. I can go and sit at the park over by the Rex hotel and be approached by so many beutiful women. Have taken several back to my hotel and they were great. A couple of doors down from the Thang Long hotel is the Cafe Saigon. These girls are not all that attractive and they are also expensive and try the game of one million dong short time and also the scam of I need to have at least 6 lady drinks before they will go out. The bar on the corner of MTB/HTB is full of older women that are pretty scary. I also poked my head into U2 and it also was filled with hags. I went to bar 51 and there was one that looked good the rest makes you want to cover up because of there looks. The same goes for bar 49 and I believe it is called bar 91. You are better off hanging around the Caravel hotel and Rex hotel area.
I will hit up Gossip and Rain Forrest this week and also I might try out the Club Royle later this week. I met one girl (Mai) who is the type that you want to take and keep. This girl is smokin hot and she was wearing the Oai Yai (spelling) and was hot as hell. Saw her walking Le Loi by the Saigon Center where I was having coffee. Asked her for coffee and she said yes and that her english is bad, I told her not to worry because my Vietnamese is worse. Had my phrase book on me and all went well. Met a cute freelancer in front of the Continental offering FS at a reasonable price. Gave her my room number at the Rex and told her to meet me in 1 hour. If your three S-I-L are in Saigon then I doubt if your old fella will get to feel the warm air of Saigon. Why not find an excuse to go up-country to Phan Thiet or Nha Trang for example. Even Da Nang but Hanoi is a bit like hard work. Lots of info in the forum.

When I saw your original post, thought of posting reply but held back. Yi Ren said it best and then others piled on in a more aggressive manner...which is a shame.
It seems to me that you started off on the wrong foot - any experienced monger would never, repeat never go with a tour guide to get pussy. You, as a senior member and contributor of many past experiences should know better.
And then after getting ripped off, start your post with the following statement: Was in HCM on a tour. The city was extremely crowded, dirty, smelly and dusty. I've only been to HCMC 3 times, literally 48 hrs each. Without even intentionally looking for fun, ended up one night with two in my room and even had security go buy extra condoms. The bars in HBT are still going strong although some of the mamas are getting greedy. I find the one on Dong Du opposite Club Latin (sports bar) to have a reasonable selection and a realistic view of prices.

As for negotiation, I am sure there is. When I rejected her offers, she told me HJ for VND500,000, FJ for VND1,500,000 Told her that I can get overnite gers of very very much higher quality than her for VND1 mil so why should I pay her VND1.5 mil? Told her I have been in HCMC for a year and this is the first time I heard of this level of pricing.
I understand that most of massage girls/ladies dont earn a salary and survive on providing extras and tips but I guess that since the place caters to foreigners, I am also not surprised of the charges.

I've used scooters exclusively for travel inside HCMC but never driving myself. I always have a driver, which I keep for my entire stay and pay him at the end of my stay. Works very well and never have I had a problem

I have been driving motorbikes myself for quite a few years now on all my previous visits and, touch wood, never had a problem, except for a phone that was snatched from my belt by 2 guys on another motorbike a few years back.
The funniest thing was that I got hit by a motorbike while crossing a street on foot ...just coz I was not looking for asplit second at the direction where the flow of bikes was coming from ... so beware.
It's true though that if you get scared by the traffic and the way they drive, you should definitely not go for it as the slightest hesitation or wrong move and you're dead: to drive in Saigon, you have to react exactly the way they do and expect you to, a litle bit like in Paris I'd say ...
Having said that, I did see some deadly accidents happen in front of me but ... that doesn't deter me. You need a hell of a lot of concentration and dexterity in handling the motorbike. If you're kind of slow to react or loose concentration easily, take a taxi and you'll be fine.

I'm a beginner, and feel like my grandma crossing the Indy 500 when out there, but at least the cars at Indy come at you from one direction. In hcm, every street is a 10-way street. I'm even more embarassed when I see 14 year old girls weaving their ways around like they're deaf and blind. Is it the worst in the world or what?

I know exactly how you feel about the traffic in Vietnam. It's all overwhelming at first but you get use to it. There's a method to all the madness. I drive the scooter around when I'm there. It's more fun and it's easy to pick up girls and cheaper. If you are inexperience it's better just to rent a automatic scooter rather than the shifting gear ones. Give it a week of driving then you'll get the hang of it.

I would not scooter myself in HCM, as previously mentioned it's risky enough just crossing the street on foot. While doing that, I've found it best just to keep moving. That seems to be what the scooterists expect, and they compensate for that. If you just stop in your tracks that might throw them off and there could be trouble to be had.
I don't know if it's the worst in the world, Columpuss, many cities in Asia seem to be in the running. My personal vote for worst would be KL, but YMMV.

At first, seeing all the bikes acting (and sounding) like a swarm of bees made me shy away from trying it but after some bad experiences with Taxis, it did not take long to try it.
1st time was riding on the back with a bar tender (see previous report). Nothing beats holding on for your life while playing around with the driver to take your mind off the crazyness.
From then on, I always rent one (~$6/day for the bigger bikes) from an older lady with a small stand near the corner fast food restaurant near the AlleyBoo bar. The bad thing is having to leave your passort but since I rent from her everytime I'm there, it is not needed anymore.
A few days later, I got a Nam GF, it was great working the other way where they are playing with you as your trying to concentrate on the road.
I do have to say renting is for the experienced motorcycle rider as traffic is uncontrolled and my USA friend got into a minor accident. As previous reports note, minimize any maneuvers that do not flow with traffic.
I also went to a large hospital in HCMC at 0100 looking for my GF as she was visiting her friend who just had an abortion (I thought she was brushing me off for another guy). It was like a horror movie as the lobby was open air and large with people sleeping on the floor all over the place.
I went to Emergency room area to ask for help to find her room and there were about 60 cots lined, full of people. I saw some major head wounds (probably from the bikes). With lost of them, blood pooling around thier heads. I saw 2 people die while there for about 30 minutes and we finally left after speaking to a nurse. Walking out through the lobby, I had to step over a small stream of blood coming from a bag (something inside the size of a bowling ball).
By the way, my GF's friend died 5 days later due to the abortion.
I learned a lot- be careful on motorbikes and do not do anything that will lead you to the hospital.
Have fun on the bikes but BE CAREFUL.

When it comes to safety, I'm pretty conservative. However, I've been driving a scooter around Saigon for ten years and I visit once a year. The traffic looks much worse than it is. It takes a while to get the hang of it, but there is a method to the madness. However, I always wear a helmet and I drive very slowly and carefully. Saigon Cowboys are always zipping past me and looking at the slow American, but that doesn't bother me at all. Scooters are cheap---around $6 a day--and they don't use much gas. It's also a good way to look for girls.

Why trying to meet anything special? You are there for just a few days, have fun, bar hop, find some professionals to take care of your little boy.
By "upscale local girl," do you mean normal girls? If that's what you mean then you have just too little time for that. You need to stay here for a while.
I suggest that you search through this forum up to at least 3 months. Take notes on everything from prices, where, and what to avoid. Vietnam is unlike the surrounding countries where mongering is easy. The government here is strict on prostitiution and it affects the conducts of local businesses
This is what I would do for first timer. Once there, go to Pham Ngu Lao street, this is the hang out area for mongerers and tourists. Find a bar or cafe, scan around for some season veterans, strike a conversation. Most of the time, they'll be happy to give you good pointers.

If you want upscale then I suggest that you stay at New World where I believe you can pick out girl from Catwalk and take her to hotel via what I understand is a connection on first floor. This is going to cost you US$100 and more for the girl with a million rules. There is an unconfirmed possibility of doing something similar at Renaissance and Club Royal.
The other upmarket possiblity is from girls who hang out at upper level bars of Sheraton and Caravelle. Same level of cost.
Otherwise RTFF for the ins and outs of short time hotels, girl friendly hotels etc etc

Just arrived to HCMC after the heavens of Bangkok and Jakarta, so I'm still very newbie.
I've done RTFF and checked 2 options this Saturday night - so far no luck:
- Gossips: techno joint, I expected to see many freelancers but it was totally crowded by locals with more guys than girls - it has good music, but not the place to meet freelancers;
- Apocalypse Now: seems to have quite a lot of FL's, but this Saturday night was totally packed, you could barely move (with many guys). I'll go back there tomorrow night, hoping for some more space which would allow to at least talk.

Speculation is that a punter could make a selection at Club Royal and take her out to Renaissance via this first floor link. They may even have different rules for Club Royal girls.
Your other option is the small hotels on Mac Thi Boui - an adequate room will cost about US$20.

Writing this from my hotel in HCMC. Free WiFi in rooms. Been here since Monday. Has been a quiet mongering time. As usual went to my favourite haunts on HBT and adjoining roads.
I must be getting old or laziness has overcome me but couldn't be bothered to take girls out to mini hotels so hav satisfied myslf with BBBJ's in the bars.

If you mean the bar on the corner of Mac Thi Boui and Hai Bai Trung then I warn you that the mamasan will not negotiate to reasonable prices. Last time I had a heart to heart with her she wanted VND1.2 mil for short time and was looking for more bar drinks as well.
Also be aware that U2 is a dive and you would not want to see the women in daylight. The new bar on MBT also has an unreasonable mamasan.
If the girls are telling you that Indochine is OK then it is almost certainly is. Whether hotels are OK for them is something they are very careful about. But I have not found a hotel charging more than US$30 that is GF.

1) I've tried the HBT bar, more for the experience than really looking for P4P. Girls are quite cute, and it's not expensive (girl drinks at VN 50,000), but girls drink fast. You can play on a nice pooltable, if you lose you pay VN 100,000 to the girl, if you lose you get a 10 seconds strip-tease - and the girl is not very good at both pool or the strip-tease. Service is totally lousy, chairs are unconfortable, the mama-san is unfriendly. The girl volunteers to make a blow-job in the backroom (which I declined, I only want FS), and expects a tip even if she does nothing (which I didn't' give).
2) 2 girls on a bike approached me - a young cutie and the mamasan. I was of course promised the moon: US$ 20 for 2 hours boom boom. At the hotel, the girl wanted VN 300,000 for the hotel - I knew the price and only gave 200,000. Then in the room, the mamasan entered to collect the fee - that makes me feeling unconfortable, and you can't lock the room door - I only gave VN 400,000. The girl didn't undress, and just wanted to give me a blowjob. I quickly got tired and went down. The girl put me on a bike, who drove me back to the hotel, then sped up without waiting for me. I think that they had stolen VN 100,000 from my wallet as well - I hadn't taken my credit cards or much cash with me.
Well, so you know what to expect. I guess that I need more experience to reach the level of Asian Rain and become a real monger who can have true boom boom at VN 300,000 including video taking. The financial damage was very small, but the service very miserable. I don't see nice bars where to really relax and enjoy company of nice girls - unlike Thailand.
But I love Vietnam - really good food, and very nice people at the office. Lovely girls too, who said they wanted to take me out, but couldn't do it now due to the Tet family obligations. Will be for next time.
many viet locals advised me not to use the bike girls for the same reasons stated by Smile. By any standards, street scenes are in general to be avoided.
Viet food is more superior than thai's but the mongering scene is way far behind. Can't have everything!
The bike girls are very organised and you go to their hotel - not good.
First thing you need is a GF hotel where you are in control.
The bar girls from HBT are not so bad since once you do the deal in the bar the mamasan is not involved - just get the girl to turn off her phone and only pay after the event. Getting the mamasan to agree to a fair price can be a chore.
There are some cuties to be had around the streets some are quick and easy and others take more work.
