Prostitution has not be legalised in New Zealand, it has been decriminalised, which is not quite the same thing. For many years prostition was not so much illegal & the only action police sometimes took the action of arresting someone for soliciting. But this wasn't common.
To my knowlegdge, no one has ever been arrested for picking up a prostitue (unlike America which has back to front laws where you can shoot an intruder dead in your home but get arrested for picking up a prostitute). The police took little notice of this activity unless it involved a public nusiance or drug related activity.
Brothels have always been illegal but it has been many years since any action was taken on a brothel. They were all called "massage parlours" and this was OK, at least from a prosection point of view. Massage parlour have been around for about 30 years. The only action that I know of was the police along with immigration making a raid on a parlour that contained a large number of Thai working girls. They seem to be the largest number of overseas sex workers in New Zealand, with many of them being her over their visa. Most only had a visitor visa and not a work permit.
Now the girls, (Guy & lady boys) cannot be arrested for soliciting as it is no longer a crime.
In my activity, which has involved all forms of working girls over a period of 30 years, I have never had a problem with the police.

What sort of budget are you looking at?
As I expect is true in california there are lots of inner city apartments that would be close to a "red light district". However in a place like Auckland the red light district can be just around the corner from the main shopping and business area and the best inner city living.
maybe $150 USD per week for a cheap but tidy innercity apartment Prices go up from there. Just look and see what is available when you are here via an agency like "harcourts" or in a paper.

HIV deaths in NZ
A recent news article indirectly revealled that one in 200 deaths in 1997 were due to unsafe sex (what else other than AIDS).
It's likely that some of those infections occurred overseas, but the realitly remains that HIV is here, and is killing Kiwis.

2% were road deaths
2.5% were from violence
3% from alcohol
6% from insufficient fruit and veg consumption
18% from smoking
The biggie is lack of exercise and poor diet combined, almost 40% of deaths
Diet basically accounted for 30% of deaths
Exercise (lack of) the other 10%
Blood pressure = 13%
Obesity = 11.5%
Poverty = 17%
Cholesterol = 17%
Since 1996 there has been a substantial drop in the number of people with HIV/AIDS who have died. In the three years to December 2002 only ten AIDS deaths were reported in New Zealand. (NZ AIDS foundation)
I doubt there is anything wrong with your statistics though because they are from the Ministry of Health, so maybe there are a fair number of deaths due to complications of other diseases or maybe it is a different accounting method.
Or it could jsut be the different accounting method and the major difference due to the fact that it is just a waiting game for many of the people on aids that the drugs are currently prolonging. (improving drugs have delayed the deaths of aids patients creating a "gap" in the death statistics that with current treatments will not continue forever)
Anyway, I don’t want anyone to think unprotected sex with prostitutes is not a major risk.

Could someone offer advice on how we could get our laws changed in Canada?
Our current situation sounds very similar to New Zealand before decriminalization, yet politicians are afraid of the subject and the media ignores it. I've written letters to politicians and newspapers, but one guy can't make much difference on his own.
The only Member of Parliament to express interest in changing the laws is Vancouver area MP Libby Davies. Hopefully she could be like Tim Barnett in New Zealand and convince others of the need for change.

New Zealand prostitutes get 'How To' guide
The New Zealand government, having taken the step of legalising prostitution, has now issued a guide for sex workers.
The 100-page Occupational Safety and Health guide to safe sex practices has been launched on a government website with the caution: "Warning: this document contains sexually explicit material".
The recommendations - which the New Zealand Herald said Saturday will also be distributed to brothels and sex workers - include detailed advice on safe sex practices such as the storage and handling of sex toys and disinfecting equipment.
Employers are asked to ensure condoms in a variety of shapes and sizes are always available, and to provide beds that support the back for a variety of services to be performed without strain or discomfort.
Sex workers are cautioned to watch out for occupational overuse syndrome, often caused by rapid repetitive tasks or forceful movements, and to carry a small torch in case they need to check clients for sexually transmitted diseases.
Comprehensive training of staff in the safe use of all equipment, particularly for fantasy work, is also recommended.
Since last year's prostitution reform legislation, the New Zealand government has also issued a "how to" guide for anyone wishing to set up a brothel.

I have been to Amsterdam and costa Rica..while the hookers in Amsterdam are way hotter in costa rica. The money goes further for a session and you can do basicaly what you want for the hour. The Prostitutes Collective believes it is too soon to say whether sex has moved from the city and into the suburbs.
At least 12 Auckland brothels have closed since prostitution was decriminalised last year. Brothel owners claim sex workers are now operating from home and recruitment is becoming impossible.
Prostitutes Collective spokeswoman Catherine Healey says it is too early to know what effect the new law has had on the industry.
She says that brothel owners must become more flexible to remain competitive and not make prostitutes work long shifts.
Catherine Healey says for too long brothel owners have had all the power in the industry. She says if the long-term effects of decriminalisation leads to more power for sex workers, she will be happy.
Auckland mayor John Banks says he is certainly not losing sleep if Auckland brothels are going bust.
Mr Banks says Auckland is a family city and he will continue to make it difficult for brothels to operate in the CBD.
He says he would rather see sex workers operating discreetly from the suburbs than from brothels in the central city.

As far as I'm concerned, the more the ladies are running things the better, but it will be interesting to see if there's an upsurge in 'private' providers, and how good the service is.
Currently the only advantages (for the girls) to parlor work are :
Protection - there's muscle nearby if a punter is a prick
Company - there's other SW to learn from and talk to
Drivers - handy for escort work, and also double as minders.
No responsibility for the premises / rent / power.
Girls working from the suburbs are most likely to be in 'teams' and using rented premises that they do not live in.
NZ law now makes smoking in ENCLOSED public places illegal.
Smoking in restaurants, bars, clubs, strip joints and most probably brothels is now unlawful. Responsibility for enforcing the law falls on the heads of those managing these venues - so it remains to be seen if brothel lounges will become clean air zones. It may eventuate that 2 lounges are constructed - one smokefree, and one for smokers.
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how things go... returning home without the stench of smoke may lead to some people being caught out with the scent of a woman on them instead!

WHEN her parents returned home and left her alone in a foreign country, Korean student Suzie had to find a way to fend for herself.
She claimed she could barely make ends meet with her measly pay as a grocery-shop worker in Auckland, New Zealand.
Desperate for money, Suzie turned to prostitution.
The 19-year-old business student told The New Paper on Sunday: 'I tried to get part-time work, but the only job I could get was at an Asian grocery shop paying $180 per week.
Joy turned into the shock: Sarah Wang thought she has struck gold when she was offered NZ$2,000 for a few days' modelling work. But she later found out the work involved posing nude for a calendar.
'The money was not enough for my rent, which is $110 per week, and living expenses.'
Suzie is not the only cash-strapped foreign student turning to vice to make a quick buck.
Indeed, it's becoming a worrying trend as authorities cite growing numbers of foreign students who become prostitutes.
And judging by some advertisements placed by prostitutes in the Kiwi papers, some Singaporean women may also be plying the sex trade in New Zealand.
MORE FOREIGN PROSTITUTES
A joint investigation by The New Zealand Herald and English-language Asian newspaper iball revealed that the number of foreign prostitutes in Auckland has gone up in the past three years.
The newspaper reports quoted a study done last year by the New Zealand Prostitutes Collective (NZPC), a taxpayer funded organization set up to look after the welfare of sex workers.
The study shows a 25 per cent increase in foreign sex workers since prostitution was legalised in New Zealand in 2003.
One of the authors of the study, nurse specialist Bronwyn Schofield said 'probably two-thirds' of the 38 foreign sex workers she had interviewed since then were Chinese women.
Many were students aged between 18 and 24, who told her they were desperate for cash or that they did it for 'easy money'.
These women are breaking the law as students and tourists in New Zealand are barred from sex work.
Auckland had about 1,500 sex workers, said NZPC's regional co-ordinator Kate Dickie. Many were sole traders working from apartments or suburban homes.
NZPC counts sex workers by trawling through parlours and checking ads and websites.
The Kiwi police also pointed out that international students in the sex industry is an increasing problem, the Herald reported.
Staff at NZPC also noticed 'an increase in Chinese sex workers coming from parts of Asia where they speak Cantonese'.
The increase was most noticeable in 'areas where there are language schools and universities'.
By monitoring ads in newspapers, on TV and the Internet, NZPC believes that most Asian prostitutes are Chinese.
Ten years ago, Thais made up the bulk of Asian prostitutes, but changes to visa rules have led to fewer Thais and more Chinese entering the country
S'POREANS DOING IT TOO
Some Singaporean women in New Zealand appear to be selling their bodies as well.
This reporter spotted five advertisements in the local papers placed by prostitutes who claimed they were Singaporean women.
Ms Schofield, who ran a weekly sexual health clinic at the New Zealand Prostitutes Collective, said that some student prostitutes were forced into 'no-condom sex' because they were naive and vulnerable.
They think that if a client looked clean and healthy, sex without condoms is safe.
She also believed some brothel owners employ illegal workers to have more control and sway over them.
Chlamydia is the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted disease in New Zealand, soaring 39 per cent in the last five years. Those under 25 are most at risk.
Suzie admits she has 'no-condom sex' with her clients if they are prepared to pay her more.
'Sex without condoms will cost the clients $30 to $50 more. Kiwi and European prostitutes usually will not entertain requests for 'no-condom sex'.'
She said her clients, mainly Caucasian men, prefer Asian prostitutes as most of them are 'younger, cheaper and prepared to do more'.
Dora, a 21-year-old Chinese prostitute, said: 'Men come to me because I am cheaper (than the local prostitutes), but I make money from charging extra for doing things that other sex workers dare not do like giving oral sex without condoms.
Caucasian prostitutes charge between $200 and $600 per hour, while Asian ones charge between $80 and $140 per hour. Half-hour sessions start from as low as $40.
Earlier this month, New Zealand also saw the launch of its first Chinese-language porn magazine, Kiwinight.
The first issue has a nude pictorial feature of Gigi, a Malaysian sex worker in Auckland, explicit pictures of young Chinese women, adult cartoons, advertisements of local brothels and $10 cut-out discount coupons.
Chinese students Sarah Wang and Kiki Chen nearly got lured into the sleaze trade.
Miss Wang, 24, a business student and part-time model, told The New Paper on Sunday that she was offered NZ$2,000 ($2,023) for a few days' work at a local modelling agency.
But as it turned out, that 'work' was to pose nude for a Year of the Dog calendar featuring naked young Asian women.
A businessman had also once dangled a house and Porsche in front of her to get her to become his mistress.
Another man offered her NZ$20,000 to be his girlfriend for a week.
Though she admitted she was tempted by some of the offers, she turned all down because she 'must think of my future husband'.
She said: 'For most girls, money comes easy for them in China. They only have to ask their parents. But when they come here and sometimes have to depend on themselves, they don't know what to do.'
'I know I can choose an easy path in life, but I don't know if it will make me happy in the long term,' she said.
'I still think working hard and finding a husband who is equally hardworking and who loves you is the path to long term happiness.'
Miss Chen, 21, a graphics-design student, who has done fashion modelling for a Kiwi Chinese website, was offered an undisclosed sum of money to bare all for a pictorial spread in a Chinese-language porn magazine.
She, too, turned down the offer.
'No decent Chinese girl who has been raised right by her parents would consider doing something like pose for a porn magazine,' she explained.
Miss Wang said: 'Girls who want to get involved with the porn industry or become prostitutes are just destroying their lives. It is a dead end and there will be many problems for them later.'
BAD NAME
Miss Chen agreed: 'They are giving the rest of us Chinese a bad name and a bad image. If they have no money, then they should just go home.'
Ms Schofield said there was an urgent need for more programmes to educate student prostitutes.
'We need some way of getting into the places they are working and educating them properly... before the negative influences take a hold.'
NZPC has got help from Mandarin-speaking volunteers, but many Chinese sex workers are hard to reach as they tend to shy away from the authorities.
I read that report in the NZ Herald and I don't know of any girls charging $200 to $600 an hour unless they work at a parlor but that would be at the bottom end of the range. I don't think that there are more Asian sex workers now, but just coming from other places. Most of them used to be from Thailand but they have tighten up on the rules for them so now they are from all over Asia as students.
Most students are not allowed to work on their visas unless they have a work permit. But if they work from home with just a cell phone number it is very hard to track them.
I have found that apart from parlors, where prices have gone up a lot in the last few years, the price for sex with either street girls or girls from the Truth in real terms has come down. Apart from parlors, the key is to NEGOTIATE!
in nz, prostitution has been decriminalised, which is not quite the same as being legal, but i am not sure of the difference. so you can't be arrested for picking up a working girl or having sex with a working girl. so for visitors from other countries, especially many states in the usa where you can be arrested, imprisoned, have you car confirep001ed and all sorts of ugly things, that doesn't happen, nor has it ever happened here.
whether you go to a parlour, get a girl from the truth paper or pick up a street worker, the police will not bother you.
i don't know how they enforce it, but in the prostitution law reform bill, (plrb) you and the girl can be fined up to $2,000.00 if you don't ensure that it is safe sex. that means with a condom. i heard about that and have had that confirmed by the nz prostitutes collective where a lady read if from a copy of the act. so if you are like me and like it uncovered, don't let the police see it uncovered.
in my sex travels i have only had 3 or so incidents involving the police and all were before the plrb.
the first was at pacific massage in k rd (now closed) when the police and immigration raided the place. they came in the front door and the girls went out the back.
the second was with aying, where the police made an appointment with her, as she worked from an add in the truth. she was arrested and charged with offering massage without a licence. i went to court with her and ensured that she got diversion.
another time i was parked up with a young lady in the middle of everything and the police pulled up, saw what we were doing and left us alone.
the last time was when i was cruising around howe st and i was stopped and asked for my name and address, which you have to give, as well as my licence.
so visitor to nz will never have a problem with the police unless they pick up an ****d girl.
in nz law, the age of consent is 16, but the age for a sex worker is 18. so if she is not charging you, you can have a 16 year old, but if you are paying for it, she has to be 18 years old.

SLIGHTLY MORE RESPECTABLE: A new report is largely positive about the effect of legalising prostitution in New Zealand, saying the number of sex workers has not increased and there had been some improvements in employment conditions.

Associate justice minister Lianne Dalziel said the report showed the Act had had a positive effect on the health and safety of sex workers and had not led to an increase in numbers of sex workers as predicted by critics of the law reform.
Labour senior whip Tim Barnett, who shepherded the bill through Parliament, said he had developed the amendment introducing a review process to ensure the debate after law reform was not driven by its opponents telling untruths about its impacts.

A woman who advertises on the "secretgirls" web site, Aimee Dylan, is scamming by directing people to a site that purports to authenticate by credit card. The site will tell you that the card is declined regardless if it is valid or not and will ask you to try with a different card. Any card used with it will have the same response ("declined" but charged anyway). Most or possibly all of the advertisers on that site work the same scam.

Happy to answer questions in the meantime including general tourist ones as well has have worked in that industry and traveled a fair bit round the country.

So if you haven't picked up New Zealand prostitution laws are now some of the most liberal in the world as of 2003.
The three main things are are illegal are;.
Any sexual act with someone under 18 (even if consensual).
Pimping, defined as forcing someone into sex work and.
All preventative sex has to covered by a condom.
Local authorities can regulate the location and type of premises, usually how many sex workers can operate from a premises and prohibit specific locations, like certain distances from schools, etc, but they don't have the power to blanket ban prostitution from the whole City / district area. Councils have to allow some sort sort prostitution business activity or they be in breach of the law.
Obviously theres still some residual social stigma for either providers or consumers though since NZ has quite rapidly moved from the late 1960's from being socially conservative to one of the most socially liberal countries in the world on par with the Nordics, and distinctly more liberal than other English speaking countries.
The new law has to all intents and purposes eliminated Street prostitution, which it was designed to do and there's now three main venues / places that punters will visit.
Out in open Brothels.
Tending to be in the bigger larger cities (about 80000 people or more) located in the downtown / cbd and / or light industrial zone. Some Strip clubs will also have a brothel attached.
Private suburban houses / apartments in standard residential area.
Some are owned by the sex worker themselves or more likely owned by an agency which hire rooms out on variable time periods (causal hours, by day or weekly / monthly).
The quality of the room / facilities vary a bit according the cost of session and how upmarket the housing area is.
Certain standard Hotels / motels will allow sex workers to hire rooms to see clients from.
The houses / apartments and Hotels / motels are often in close proximity to 'civilians' and the its expected both culturally and practically that punters use discretion when visiting.
As of mid 2023 the main method for finding a provider is via various websites, the big ones being https://www.newzealandgirls.co.nz/all/nzgirls.php which I believe last looked into was locally owned (they have a Australian version as well).
Followed by https://escortify.co.nz , which is operated out of Eastern Europe.
Both have verification rankings / systems, but neither are near to perfect and Asian provider profiles in particular sometimes will have inaccurate photos and or age / body specs listed.
The 2 sites do operate reporting systems to remove fake profiles but this seems to be very haphazard as the providers paying for their ad is main revenue stream for the sites. Both sites are pretty easy to navigate round for fluent English readers.
Generally Asian and South American profiles have a much higher rate of fake or incorrect (SW is noticeably older and / or bigger) profiles than Kiwi European of other ethnic profiles.
Newzealandgirls has an associated supposed punter driven forum run very similar to here. Called Adult Forum. It listed about half down the menu bar on the left side of website main page which contain reviews of providers, but not ones requested to not be listed (abbreviated as DND- or Do Not Detail). Reviews can be viewed by non- members, with any one wanting to add contributions requiring a registration which from memory I don't think they allow from non-NZ IP addresses. (due spam issues). With a lot of providers (so non-DND) seemingly to often change profiles & names it can make getting unto date info on a particular person hard to track down.
It partly the existence of this forum for why the NZ reports here are so limited as local punters don't need to have a overseas's non traceable based server IP system.
There are a few other websites which have kept the fake overseas ad from overwhelming them, being https://nz.escortsaffair.com/wellington and https://www.scarletamour.com/nz/wellington.
Respectively. The a fair number of other sites, but the bulk are mostly defunct / out of date ads or so dominated by foreign scams listings that they are worth bothering with.
Good detail to know to be able to tell fake ad from real NZ based one is the listed phone contact number format. New Zealand cell / mobile number will start with 02* followed 6 or 7 digits (so for instance 021 111 1111). NZ landline formate is 0* (which will only be 9, 7, 6, 4 or 3 depending on what part of NZ) followed by 7 digits. So eg 09 111 1111 for say a Auckland landline.
Anything which doesn't get shown in this format is fake. This includes listings with the correct format but with the NZ country code put in front ie 64 in front. A genuine NZ ad wouldn't bother to put the country code in front, you don't add when within NZ.
For specific details on the main centres, for instance the main zones and what to expect I'll update each list region with post soon.

Great info, thanks, I'll be visiting the south island in July 2024 and will share any experiences, assuming I don't freeze to death.
So if you haven't picked up New Zealand prostitution laws are now some of the most liberal in the world as of 2003.
The three main things are are illegal are;.
Any sexual act with someone under 18 (even if consensual).
Pimping, defined as forcing someone into sex work and.
All preventative sex has to covered by a condom.
Local authorities can regulate the location and type of premises, usually how many sex workers can operate from a premises and prohibit specific locations, like certain distances from schools, etc, but they don't have the power to blanket ban prostitution from the whole City / district area. Councils have to allow some sort sort prostitution business activity or they be in breach of the law.
Obviously theres still some residual social stigma for either providers or consumers though since NZ has quite rapidly moved from the late 1960's from being socially conservative to one of the most socially liberal countries in the world on par with the Nordics, and distinctly more liberal than other English speaking countries.
The new law has to all intents and purposes eliminated Street prostitution, which it was designed to do and there's now three main venues / places that punters will visit.
Out in open Brothels.
Tending to be in the bigger larger cities (about 80000 people or more) located in the downtown / cbd and / or light industrial zone. Some Strip clubs will also have a brothel attached.
Private suburban houses / apartments in standard residential area.
Some are owned by the sex worker themselves or more likely owned by an agency which hire rooms out on variable time periods (causal hours, by day or weekly / monthly).
The quality of the room / facilities vary a bit according the cost of session and how upmarket the housing area is.
Certain standard Hotels / motels will allow sex workers to hire rooms to see clients from.
The houses / apartments and Hotels / motels are often in close proximity to 'civilians' and the its expected both culturally and practically that punters use discretion when visiting.
As of mid 2023 the main method for finding a provider is via various websites, the big ones being https://www.newzealandgirls.co.nz/all/nzgirls.php which I believe last looked into was locally owned (they have a Australian version as well).
Followed by https://escortify.co.nz , which is operated out of Eastern Europe.
Both have verification rankings / systems, but neither are near to perfect and Asian provider profiles in particular sometimes will have inaccurate photos and or age / body specs listed.
The 2 sites do operate reporting systems to remove fake profiles but this seems to be very haphazard as the providers paying for their ad is main revenue stream for the sites. Both sites are pretty easy to navigate round for fluent English readers.
Generally Asian and South American profiles have a much higher rate of fake or incorrect (SW is noticeably older and / or bigger) profiles than Kiwi European of other ethnic profiles.
Newzealandgirls has an associated supposed punter driven forum run very similar to here. Called Adult Forum. It listed about half down the menu bar on the left side of website main page which contain reviews of providers, but not ones requested to not be listed (abbreviated as DND- or Do Not Detail). Reviews can be viewed by non- members, with any one wanting to add contributions requiring a registration which from memory I don't think they allow from non-NZ IP addresses. (due spam issues). With a lot of providers (so non-DND) seemingly to often change profiles & names it can make getting unto date info on a particular person hard to track down.
It partly the existence of this forum for why the NZ reports here are so limited as local punters don't need to have a overseas's non traceable based server IP system.
There are a few other websites which have kept the fake overseas ad from overwhelming them, being https://nz.escortsaffair.com/wellington and https://www.scarletamour.com/nz/wellington.
Respectively. The a fair number of other sites, but the bulk are mostly defunct / out of date ads or so dominated by foreign scams listings that they are worth bothering with.
Good detail to know to be able to tell fake ad from real NZ based one is the listed phone contact number format. New Zealand cell / mobile number will start with 02* followed 6 or 7 digits (so for instance 021 111 1111). NZ landline formate is 0* (which will only be 9, 7, 6, 4 or 3 depending on what part of NZ) followed by 7 digits. So eg 09 111 1111 for say a Auckland landline.
Anything which doesn't get shown in this format is fake. This includes listings with the correct format but with the NZ country code put in front ie 64 in front. A genuine NZ ad wouldn't bother to put the country code in front, you don't add when within NZ.
