It's not that I'm a gringo baby (I'm actually latin) but there are several reasons why even at a great discount I would not venture to El Alto:

1) Distance from downton La Paz - 40min ride at least on a very crowded mini-bus or 1:20 on a even more packed bus.

2) Safety - If you are not Aymara you'll stick out like a sore thumb and if you get mugged, don't expect sympathy from the locals and pretty sure that the police won't be much help

3) Quality - Sure it's cheaper, but I'm not into cholitas or banging away on a straw matress on a cement floor.

4) Altitude - El Alto is about 400m higher, which DOES make a huge difference

5) Weather - LP might be cold, but El Alto will be colder

I am a bit of a spoiled gringo...I rarely stay on the motels/bars. I much rather pay a bit more, go to a motel and be comfortable. Happy mongering, I'll be in Bolivia for the holidays.

I was in Rurrenebaque last year and I didn't notice any scene, it is pretty small. However, it isn't very hard to pick up. Some of the girls there and in neighboring Beni are soooo fine. There is a huge disparity between them and the men. You will see these pretty, young girls married to an ugly fucker who doesn't even have the sense to know he is lucky and they will still treat them like shit.

Shit like 15 of these places that is where all the action is in one whole zone. I think the Zone is called 12 De Octubre plus another club on another area Marzo Calle I think. Ah I forgot. Well worth it no entrane to any of these clubs even half way between Are streetwalkers charging 30 Bolivianos my Girl was #0 Bolivianos. A Club Putera way at the end of the zone was called Lampa. Hey Nibu here last night in La Paz but back for one more day monday. Last night me Juan,Denjo and this other dude went sex hunting all over La Paz. At Eros they had rooms too 70 Bolivianos for 15 minutes 10 fucking bucks. The clubs were in The Gran Poder Neighborhood but if you go more north of that neighborhood even more dangerous. On Prudencia strret like 6 blocks before the Mcdonalds are like 7 clubs but pretty much all shit. We checked out two other clandestine places in miraflores but SHIT. If you look around in Santa Cruz, you won't see beggars on the streets-I have not seen a single one. You don't see any shoeshine dudes either, unlike the rest of Bolivia. To me, that's an indicator that there isn't the grinding poverty that's characteristic of the rest of Bolivia.

Maybe you can get a better rate from the girls if you do the same girls as a repeat customer.

What I did not like about S.C. is the number of scams targeting gringos. I wonder how enjoyable it would be to live there for a longer time period if you always have to be dodging these scams. One or two months is plenty for me.

scams? the classic one is a man in civilian clothes asking for your passport in english. he claims to be with the tourist police. some passports are highly prized, i would not even show it to a regular cop except at a police station.
this scam has happened to me and someone else at the hotel. of course, the other fellow refused to hand over his passport as well.

I have read that the incident was started by a mob of angry parents, whose children had to pass by an area in which there were literally tens of illegal brothels and bars in less than a coupe of blocks. Apparently, the protest turned violent, and the mob started breaking the windows of the brothels, and got to the point where they broke into them, took all the furniture and valuables they found inside them, and set them on fire in the middle of the street.

Up to that point, the government had not done much to close down illegal brothels. But after the viaolent reaction of the people of El Alto, the local government is starting a campaign to crack down on illegal brothels (to save face).

However, this is not bad news for the monger community. Bolivian Mongers are actually happy about this. According to them, the targeted brothels were very unsanitary and staffed with the lowest quality chicas who provided terrible service for low prices. If you are trying to say that I was making shit up because I have not posted in a while it's because I did not get much information on this board and I am gathering intelligence elsewhere. About the closing of the illegal "puteros" en El Alto.

I have read that the incident was started by a mob of angry parents, whose children had to pass by an area in which there were literally tens of illegal brothels and bars in less than a coupe of blocks. Apparently, the protest turned violent, and the mob started breaking the windows of the brothels, and got to the point where they broke into them, took all the furniture and valuables they found inside them, and set them on fire in the middle of the street.

Up to that point, the government had not done much to close down illegal brothels. But after the viaolent reaction of the people of El Alto, the local government is starting a campaign to crack down on illegal brothels (to save face).

However, this is not bad news for the monger community. Bolivian Mongers are actually happy about this. Did you look into flying to Lima, Peru, and then taking a first class bus from there to La Paz? Takes a while, I agree, but would be much cheaper I think. Depending on where you are flying from, tickets to Lima are pretty cheap right now, as I am in the process of buying a ticket myself to go to Peru next month. Jaimito Cartero posted some rock bottom fares to Peru on AA in the Lima thead, FWIW.

Also, have you found out anything regarding Americans needing a tourist visa to visit Bolivia? I wonder, is it required just for entering the country via air, or does entering via bus require one as well.

Copcabana has hydrofoils coming and going to Peru. If you try a border town by ground. You may evade and cross border, no sweat, but some miles inland there is check points. You better be identified there. Or you are some conscript ***** for the day.

JohanI forgot to add that the visa is valid for 5 years, so you can go in and out as many times as you want but for no more than 3 months at a time, so I guess it's not too bad.

The prostibulos in capitan ravelo are quite consistent. Lots of girls, nice girls, it is the whole parade of chicas that makes it very nice places. Girls are cute. 100 to 200 BS is the range. Hard to miss places they are all one after the other. Next to anaconda's
