AIS has different packages, some offer cheaper calls with one month's service, others offer up to twelve months (I think). The most you can charge your phone with is 4000 THB. Just contact your service provider and question them if you're unsure.

Take a scratchcard to the airport for your final charge.

You could of course leave your phone with someone you trust and have them recharge it for you. Or, if you have a Thai bank account set up a billed-monthly account, then it will never expire.

well boys, it has begun. after 12 weeks of sexual bliss with my new girlfriend, i’m having my first holiday away from her. my new girlfriend is off to phuket on a 16 day fuck and suck spree with one of her long time clients. i’ve been listening to her phone conversations with him and so far i’ve gathered that he is bringing her a brand spanking new mobile phone and a gold necklace. hell, he’s already sent ten thousand baht in advance of these new offerings. i’m under the impression my gal’s going to make a nice haul off of him. maybe i’ll feign jealousy and make her let me wear the gold necklace when we’re in public. isn’t that what joy’s thai boyfriend did in “private dancer?” (don’t forget this is required reading for all and sundry, especially the sundry).

ah... the advantages of having a prostitute for a girlfriend are numerous indeed. i’ve already spoken of our sex life, blindfolded, groping and roaming across the bed sheets. we always keep the elements of tantra in mind before, during, and after our moans of ecstacy.

while lying on the bed i’ll whip out my cock and show her places i like touched or she’ll open her pussy and place my finger in certain positions that she favors while telling me stories about past interludes with her clients. her most recent reflection was about a sex video she and a friend of hers shot with a john. it was a school-girl-gets-kinky affair that had her rolling on the bed with laughter after recounting it to me. she looked at me and laughed and said, “you’ve no idea how many customers told me my video was the reason they came to thailand.”

when i asked her how people knew about the video she told me it had been all over the internet saying, “my girlfriend thought it was a good idea for business. besides, we got paid 5,000 baht for the video and it only took us an hour to shoot it. i didn’t care who saw it. my family hates me already so there was no reason not to do it.” then she laughs again, “i still can’t believe how one video made so many farangs decide to come to thailand.”

it’s now 6pm on friday and my gal skipped out the door about thirty minutes ago. it’s a weird feeling to be alone for a change. i’ve spent (literally) the entire past 12 weeks with her. it’s not that i miss her. it’s more like a feeling of liberation. jesus! maybe i’ll spend a few moments to jack-off before i start my holiday. on the other hand (pun intended) maybe i’ll count the masturbation as part of the holiday. it’s been so long since i’ve masturbated i think i’m going to enjoy it. i feel like having a long bellow of laughter right now, but i’ll spare the reader from any more details and finish up this whacking paragraph with a poem.

i’ve decided to go to pattaya for my holiday. i’ve been in thailand for 15 months without visiting the so called “sacred city.” many readers of this board head to pattaya without any thought for bangkok’s wares. now i’m going to see what all the huh-bub is about. maybe i’ll get hooked on pattaya. i find it rather unlikely that i’ll fall in love with pattaya, but one never knows until one knows. i hope i’ll be able to say that all good things come to those who wait. it’s not like i’ve really been waiting to visit the “sacred city”, but i want to be able to say i enjoyed it. i reckon that’s a subject for another post.

my phone is ringing. it’s my girlfriend. she’s been gone almost an hour and she’s already phoning me. she says hello and says she’s just making sure my phone is turned on, then she hangs up. thai w-h-o-r-e-s are an amazing piece of work. i’ve already mentioned the fact that they are the master of the lie and my girlfriend is no exception, more on that later. but here’s another crazy thing. the way my girl figures it, she can go with her clients all she wants but i can’t butterfly while she is away. i have to laugh at this one, but when i do she looks at me and asks me if i like the idea of minced penis for dinner. i shit you not!

today she was scrubbing my tile floor with a rag she made out of one of my old t-shirts. i actually like the shirt but she doesn’t and that is why it is now a floor rag. oh hell, that’s another fucking story as well. anyhow, she’s scrubbing the floor and she is talking to me while she’s at it. “darling. it will be easy for me to know if you bring another girl here. i’m cleaning up all the hair. if i see a long hair when i come back then i’ll know you like minced penis. i never butterfly and you can not butterfly and if i see hair i can not love you , shoooah. i not butterfly with client because i love you cone-dee-oh.” i hide my fear and swallow.

“darling. i can not butterfly when you in phuket because i love you cone-dee-oh. but if you are gone and i am horny then i might do something that is not love. i boom-boom and love you cone-dee-oh, but i am a man and i might have to do something to help me sleep.”

“darling. shoooah. i know you take lady to help you when i gone, but i can not know. if i see hair when i come back then i know. i know you take lady if i gone but you not take lady here. if you do then i know you hungry for minced penis?”

(posterlion got sleepy at this point and went off to count sheep).

today is sunday morning and i’m on my third day alone (cone-dee-oh). last night i smsed a friend of mine, “hey man. my girl’s gone for 16 days. what you up to?” he called me after about 30 minutes.

“i’m down on sukhumvit and i thought i’d call you and you’ve already sent a message. what! you got some sort of 7th sense or something? ”

“maybe. i want to get out and have some fun because i’m on holiday man!”

“i’m thinking about going to soi cowboy. want to go?”

“sure thing. where are you now?”

“i’m at 99. i’ll wait here until you arrive.”

“got to have a quick shower first.”

“okay.”

“see you in 30.”

“okay”

“bye.”

“bye.”

in the shower i thought about my girl. she called me at 4pm and again at 6pm and then again at 7pm. quite touching. the first call was from the hotel room of her client. “darling. i’m not happy. i miss you too much.” i could hear an echo in the room.

“i miss you too darling. are you in the toilet?”

“yes. i’m crazy alone. mr. x asleep now. what you doing?”

“nothing much. in my room watching tv.”

“did you take lady last night?”

“no.”

“don’t take lady okay? try not to butterfly okay?”

“okay darling.”

“i go now. miss you too much.”

“bye darling.”

at 6pm i could hear traffic and street noise in the background. “darling. where you now?”

“still in my apartment.” i confessed.

“where are you?”

“buy food for mr. x. he awake now. he hungry.”

“you buy laos food?”

“i hate you! no i no buy laos food. he not like laos food.”

“then what you buy?”

“i buy hamburger and arab food.

“aroi mai?”

“mai aroi! i hate you!”

“good! i have minced catfish and sticky rice today. hah!”

“you try give me jealous. you jai raun. you jai dam.”

“so you jealous?” i asked.

“you want to fight? you want to die?”

i laughed. “no die today. eat laos food already.”

“fuck you. bye!”

at 7pm she was back at the hotel. she called asking for the phone number of her friend in phuket and the phone number of her dealer. “darling. can you give me number of lady see dang dang and lady phuket?”

“sure. let me find your book.” she forgot her contact book in her haste to meet her client. i gave her the numbers and then she said, “i not alone now. i with lady. i know you not believe me.” then she gave the phone to her supposed friend.

“hello. how are you?”

“i’m fine. why did my girlfriend give you the phone.”

well... i actually knew the reason. thai girls are very strange. they figure that they can give the phone to anyone as proof that they are doing what they say they are doing. say your girlfriend is at her boyfriends house. you know? the boyfriend they haven’t told you about yet. she calls you up to make you think she is missing you then she tells you she is with a girlfriend and then she gives the phone to some girl and some girl talks to you. the thai girl thinks this is proof that she is not lying. it’s a fucking farce of course, but the thai girl would swear by it in a court of law. her thinking goes something like this: i told him i was with my girlfriend, then i gave the phone to a girl and the girl talked to him. how could he not believe me?

the girl gives the phone back to my girlfriend. “darling. you believe me?”

“of course darling.”

“miss you.”

“miss you too.”

“bye.”

“bye.”

after my shower i got dressed and headed on down to sukhumvit to see my buddy. just as i’m reaching our rendevous point my phone rings. it’s my girlfriend yet again and oh, oh, how touching. “darling. where are you?”

“i’m on sukhumvit.”

“where you go now?”

“to meet a friend for some beers.”

“where at?”

“club 99.”

“where that?”

“i told you last time. jam dai mai?” as i walked into the joint the music made it hard to hear my girl.

“darling. you try for give me jealous again. you not miss me.”

“i miss you baby. but i can’t stay at home. i don’t like alone.” one thing you have to do in the game of “man vs woman” is listen to the girl. she always tells me, “i don’t like alone”, when she is trying to persuade me to stay with her. that is why i said that line to her, because i knew she’d know that she couldn’t argue with such a logical statement of fact.

“darling. i hate you. i not talk to you now. you not miss me.”

“baby.” said i. “you want to fight? you want to die?”

she laughed and hung up the phone and i knew everything was all right. then i went and had drinks with my buddy in soi cowboy. he bar-fined a really hot young lass and i walked back up to soi nana, stopping by [CodeWord901] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord901)’s for a quick bj while in route. it was the standard 700-baht-bareback-[CodeWord901] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord901)-bj. no muss no fuss. it wasn’t as good as what i’d been getting for the last 12 weeks, but it was better than average and i couldn’t complain.

once i arrived at soi nana i grabbed a brew and took roost at my favorite roosting spot and waited for the 2am parade of the bedazzled. it was the usual. lady boys to the left, girls to the right, with plenty of sweaty palmed punters in between. but there was one guy i took note of because i hadn’t seen him before and he was very confident in his abilities. he’d just arrived in bangkok from pattaya. he constantly referred to pattaya as the “sacred city” and couldn’t stop talking about his numerous visits to the “sacred temples.”

i indulgently smiled as he told his stories because i have never visited the temples in pattaya and i am sure that my facial expressions were in no way condescending. in fact, i enjoyed his recollections of finding the perfect gems. apparently, finding the perfect gem in pattaya is as easy as falling off a log. there’s not any reason for planning or foresight whatsoever. i guess at this point i might have given him a smile that was a bit too curved or a brow that was a bit too wrinkled. i could tell that his recollections were less factual and more hormone-induced-guy-shit than anything i’d heard in a while. that’s probably why i enjoyed the conversation so much.

of course i give him the benefit of a doubt as i’ve never visited the “sacred temples” of this “sacred city.” but i’ll know in a couple of days. the thing that amazed me the most about him, thus giving me the impetus for my condescending looks, was his assumed knowledge of bangkok and punters in general.

at one point he went into a very long spiel.

“i drank a few beers in nana plaza i started to think about the night ahead, because in the bangkok monger district you have to think about what you are going to do, it’s not like in pattaya where you don’t really need to think, where you can move almost by inertia from one pussy to the next: here you have to make plans.

“in the monger district i can’t take the same approach as in the sacred city: if i walked around the monger district in search of the gems of nature -as i usually do in pattaya- i would end up, more often than not, empty handed in the parking lot at 3 am, expecting a last-minute miracle.

“in the monger district the right approach is to take it easy, not to be very ambitious, walk around a bit and whenever you feel like fucking something that is on your way not to give a second thought to it and fuck her. this is not a place to have mystic experiences like pattaya, this is simply a place to get laid, it lacks the spiritual dimension.

“i’m not saying there are no gems in the monger district, i have found some in the past myself, i’m just saying that they are so rare that you can’t rely on finding one when you plan your hunting day. they are so rare that in fact you have to plan your hunting day as if there were no gems at all.

“after nana plaza i checked soi zero, the sw’s along sukhumvit, soi cowboy and finally the beer garden. i asked for a drink and walked slowly around the place checking the hags till i got to the entrance again, where i sat to see if something interesting would turn up at some point. the quality was really depressing, this is the place where i could find the chicks i usually fuck in pattaya 20 years later, once they have completed the whole cycle of hooking in thailand. not that i was looking for [CodeWord901] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord901), i would have considered anything that looked younger than 30 yo, but my search was unsuccessful.
“by this time i had already resigned myself to having to fuck an average type, so i decided to pick her up from nana plaza as that was the closest hunting ground to my hotel, only a couple of minutes away.

“i got into nana plaza and hunted the first fuckable thing i saw. she was on the ground floor, around 30 yo ( i didn’t bother to check the id this time, for obvious reasons), a great bum and very beautiful face but she had had 2 children, which meant she was likely to have nasty scars, but her attitude was great and, after all, in this ghetto you can’t be very picky, so i recruited her for a st.

“i thought about the positive side of the story while we were on our way to the room: she had good attitude and she was likely to have good skills too.

“effectively, she had great skills but she had also some childbirth marks that i didn’t find too appealing so i kept the lighting in my room to a minimum.

“i, however, did enjoy her sacred temple: it was one of those spacious, grateful, friendly, warm and slippery temples, it was one of those temples that as soon as you enter them you get the feeling that you’ve been there before, it was a kind of sexual déjà vu.

“despite the scars it was a great fuck, actually if it wasn’t for the scars i’d have kept that sacred temple lt to explore it in more detail.

“if only the gems of the sacred city had such welcoming temples… but i suppose you can’t have your cake and eat it.

“once the st finished i gave her the 1,000 b we had agreed in advance and she left – overpriced, i know, but she wouldn’t go any lower and don’t forget that we are in the monger district where pussies are priced like gold due to the sucker factor: in the same way as i had resigned myself to fucking an average type i had also resigned myself to paying suckers’ rates.

i had to laugh in my beer and try not to choke on my cigarette after he had finished. what the fuck is this guy thinking? he comes to a place where he knows the pussy is priced like gold due to the “sucker factor” and after spending the effort and the breath to tell me about the “sucker factor”, he then tells me that he is a “sucker” too? what!

and on top of all of it, he has to tell me he is a happy sucker because, even though she had god-awful stretch marks, her temple was indeed sacred because it was spacious, grateful, friendly, and warm and slippery. in fact, it was one of those temples that as soon as you enter them you get the feeling that you’ve been there before, it was a kind of sexual déjà vu.

so i thought to myself. what kind of déjà vu? the pattaya kind of déjà vu. who the hell knows? all i could do was offer up a farewell salude and click his beer before walking home. as i walked home i thought about a conversation i’d had with a monk one time and i started to laugh like a hyena.

i was at a temple in hat yai and was looking at a mound of ants when a monk walked up and started to look at the ants with me. after a time he looked at me and back at the ants and he asked me what i thought about it and i told him i wasn’t thinking too much at all, but i did mention that it looked to me as if the ants were very busy. he smiled and said that it was so and then he asked me if i could point out an ant that looked like it was working harder than the other ants and even though i could not discern any ant that looked more busy than the next one i pointed one out to him.

“that one looks like he is too busy!”

“maybe he wants to be king.” said the monk.

“do you think he’ll make it? do you think he’ll be king?” at this the monk laughed.

“it doesn’t matter in the least. every king that can be a king will be a king. and every king that becomes a king will one day find himself as an ant. he will have to become king all over again.”

i nodded in appreciation and he nodded back at me and then he left and i went on my way. as i walked i wondered which one of us had committed the worst offense. was it i for understanding him so perfectly, or was it he for explaining everything so well?

Posterlion: Quite a while ago, you said you were going to stop posting at least until you had a go at writing the book you supposedly went to Thailand to write. Instead, you shacked yourself up with an aging prostitute and, apparently unable to do what you set out to do, you have reappeared here, writing long, ineloquent transcripts of your conversations with your prostitute girlfriend and her type. I believe these long, rambling, self indulgent posts do you no favors. Nor do they help achieve the board's purpose. Nor, in my opinon, are the particularly inspiring or thought provoking. They might have been better had they kept closely to what your skank friend thought and did and if they omitted your own ramblings and musings entirely. That way we would get some idea of what she thinks - assuming she can think - and would be spared a lot.

Here is a thought: Life is about choosing. You choose: choose between the following: go to Pattaya and fuck your brains out; fuck your skank friend when and if she resurfaces; write your book. Whichever (combination) you choose, try to edit the length of your posts. If your posts are meant to entertain, then brevity is the soul of wit. If they are self indulgent and self deluding ramblings, then they amount to abuse.

I've never realised why girls do the phone-passing, but now it makes sense.

As for the threats; why must bar-girls only use these two threats- "you want to die?" and "I'll cut off your penis". They say it as if it is a joke, but the look in their eyes and tone of their voice suggests otherwise. It really isn't something I enjoy hearing. I need those two things, both of them, very much.

That "sacred-city" idiot you met in the car-park SHOULD have his penis cut-off. What a total loser!

His enthusiastic boasting reeks of newcomer syndrome, he is probably still at the stage where anyone younger and less heavy than his Farang wife qualifies as the perfect girl. You should have introduced him to this forum.

Finding "the perfect gem" in Pattaya is fucking impossible, you can literally walk for hours without finding any hot chicks; for quantity go to Pattaya, for quality stick with Bangkok.

It's not called the City of Angels for nothing.

Well...

It doesn't take much too become famous these days. All you have to do is write a long tomb and the critics decide that brevity is "the soul of wit."

So you look at the landscape and you see that the other dimwits are writing long rhyming poems that remind you of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” It seems all the amateur poets start there.

Nice girls, not one with a defect
Cellophane shrink-wrapped, so correct
Red dogs under illegal legs
She looks so good that he gets down and begs

(CHORUS) She is watching the detectives
"Ooh, he's so cute"
She is watching the detectives
When they shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot
They beat him up until the teardrops start
But he can't be wounded 'cause he's got no heart

Long shot at that jumping sign
Invisible shivers running down my spine
Cut to baby taking off her clothes
Close-up of the sign that says "We never close"
He snatches at you and you match his cigarette
She pulls the eyes out with a face like a magnet
I don't know how much more of this I can take
She's filing her nails while they're dragging the lake

So I respond to these imbeciles with something brief:

A FEW GOOD MEN

whack whack whack whack
smack smack smack smack
whack whack smack whack
smack smack
WHACK

we get more done
than most.

AND OF COURSE... It does not impress them. At which point the lowly author has nothing left to say but, “Hey Dude. Sorry if you can’t appreciate my efforts. And in fact, I’m not too fucking worried about it because I’m not looking to you to be my editor.

Domino,

You’ve been on the WSG board for too long. Look man, it’s obvious to anyone that still has some sanity. Your personal attacks (I’ll call them rebuttals to be kind) are so shallow and so uninspiring that they hardly merit reproach.

So you can consider my last rebuttal of your inane B.S. as a personal favor, so to speak. Think of it as if I am a God trying to help inspire in you a last dying breath to gain my favor. After this last personal treat, from me to you, I will consider you in the same way I consider a book no longer in print. You may have been a classic, but the time has come for you to accept your fate with the worms.

1. You are not an author as publishing here does not count.
>> Are you a total moron? I don’t consider anything I write “here” as published. But I do consider you lucky to have read it.

2. Yes, you do need an editor, at the very least.
>> Every good writer needs an editor. They key word being “good.” Who knows? Maybe you could use one some day. However, that day is not today.

3. The poem (sic) you deride is a rock classic, penned by Elvis Costello, himself a classic.
>> I did not realize you were resorting to plagiarism to make your unique and uninformative posts. As for my poem (not sic), it is a posterlion classic and I am a classic myself.

4. You have self abuse on the brain. This is probably because, from the evidence presented here, your Thai plan has not worked out and you have sought false refuge between a skank's legs.
>> Oh my dear sir. Although I sometimes take refuge between the legs of my skank, her openings are far less false than the orifices of your Grace-Hotel-Ali-Baba-Rejects.

5. You should probably study SA's MO to learn how to be an expat in Thailand and to live a life worth living at the same time.
>> I’ve studied your master’s work and I regret to inform you that you are living under the pretense of a false God. I can only hope that you will someday find your way back to a real and better life.

P.S. Maybe the best thing for you to do is send a request to Jackson to ban you from this board. Your "abuse" is a redundant waste of his disk space.

don't waste your precious time and reply to Mr. "I know it all".
As we all have seen in numerous cases, he likes to lecture and impose rules on others even though no rules are valid for him. He believes that he is at the top of human mankind and therefore average guys like us can't be compared to him, he creates his own category and in fact he does.
Due to that it doesn't make sense to try to argue with him or try to have a decent discussion as you could have with any mature adult.

He also believes that his mental pavement pizzas - btw, that's why he calls himself Domino the pizzaman - is the final wisdom. There is no other person on earth as eloquent and literate as him. He has been everywhere, he has seen it all. So do not dare to doubt his words and kneel down to praise him.

Do not let his harsh words regarding your "Thai plan" reach your heart. It's obvious that he is just jealous of those who live where he wants to live and who got the balls to live their dreams and even enjoy it.
He seems to have an empty and boring life or why does he post almost every day at an unimportant sex related site somewhere in the internet ? Maybe he has no friends to talk to. Guess why ?

At least your posts are honest and you are genuine, this is something I really miss from our great lecturer.

Keep posting

Posterlion: Learn how to write it is as simple as that. The Traveler is not someone in a position to give advice. Chester is a self confessed child molester (http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1100182470588) who has pitiable English. His forte is molesting children, not writing.
And, as regards Private Dancer. His site (http://www.stephenleather.com/) had claimed 60,000 free downloads. That amounts to zero paid downloads, or potential downloads. Outside of the Pattaya on Steroid type books, no one who reads books wants to read about skanks and the guys who fuck them. The classics in this genre were written by the French - about 150 years ago.

The main thing you have to do is think about the choices open to you. This forum is not the place to do that.

domino,

you still keep amusing me :d

you feel so superior to everybody and look down on others because you believe to be smart and eloquent, but sorry boy, you are not. just look at your posts below.

as soon as someone criticizes you or just has a different point of view, you start calling names - call them loser, **** or whatever - instead of discussing the matter in a proper way. this is not the behaviour of a mature adult. the last time i have seen such sort of behaviour was when i had been playing in a sandbox at the age of five.

where is your eloquence ? why not using techniques like irony and sarcasm instead of name calling ?
don't you have the skills, can't control your temper ?

if you would be as smart as you believe to be, why you still haven't found out that nobody is interested in your little personal wars ? you already had to change ids and were caught lying several times, your attitude speaks for itself.

just remember that "chump change" pic, which was probably the ugliest pic you posted so far (besides those herpes pics of your sweethearts). this pic displayed your character better than any words could do. i also found it quite interesting that you believed you might impress anybody with only 5000 us$. was it impressive for you ?

no one here is a "clochard" and gets excited by that chump change. oh yes, if you don't know which dictionary you should use, try french - english.

relax and learn to control your emotions. is it so hard for you to be tolerant and accept an opinion that differs from yours ? stop being a "know it all" and avoid constantly lecturing people.

how can you call anybody being a loser if you don't even know that person ? have you ever met poster ? no ?
i did, and if he had a "thai plan" - he never mentioned any - it seems to work out. he looked like a happy and well balanced guy to me, a bit tired (too much blindfolded fucking as he told me) but happy.

you are the only loser i can see here. we all visit the forum from time to time to ask a question or giving advice answering them. you are the only one who visits the forum almost every day, telling us that you know guys who did time (how scary tough guy), that you carry knives with you. (lol, scared of little thai girls ? :) so insecure ?) and try to discuss how to get rid of a corpse.

may i remind you that this is a sex related site. do you really need to discuss that bs here ? got no friends to talk to ? guess why.

btw, i know that my english isn't perfect, it's not my native tongue. but i bet that i speak your tongue much better than you speak mine. also remember, don't make fun out of someone with an accent, he might speak more languages than you.

Traveller,

I don’t see any abuse in Domino’s below posts: someone wrote some boring brainfarts and he tried to give him some well-meant advice and bring him back to reality. I wouldn’t call that abuse.

He criticized your English because your badly written post appeared in the middle of a discussion about writing, but obviously there is nothing wrong with the inability to master a second language; in fact, you always get your message across.

I know that you, unlike expat losers and other second-class members (numbered or otherwise) in this forum, are not stupid, because - child abuse considerations apart – you usually manage to understand what is posted, so I am surprised by your diatribe and can’t quite understand its aim.

Tsunami brings better treatment for Thai stray dogs By Nopporn Wong-Anan
Thu May 5, 9:50 AM ET

"Black, fat, female," a veterinary worker shouts to an assistant taking notes as she gives a rabies shot to another nameless dog left homeless by the Dec. 26 tsunami on the Thai resort island of Phuket.

Hundreds of such pets were saved by officials and animal rights activists while rescue workers were scouring the Andaman Sea coast for the victims of the Asian tsunami that left 230,000 people dead or missing along the Indian Ocean rim.

But while human survivors in Thailand complain that red tape makes it hard for them to resume normal life, the deadly waves brought better care to the dogs and cats that escaped.

"The tsunami crisis is an opportunity for abandoned animals to be taken care of," said Roger Lohanan, head of Thai Animal Guardians Association helping stray pets get treatment and new homes.

A U.S. C-130 military cargo plane even flew 120 cats and dogs to Bangkok to find new homes. They had been rescued from Phi Phi Island, where the backpacker movie "The Beach" was filmed.

Another 64 starving "tsunami dogs" were rounded up around a makeshift morgue at a Buddhist temple in nearby province of Phang Nga, where some had been nibbling corpses, officials said.

Some have already found new owners and only 30 of them are still at a state shelter.

In Phuket, the city's animal shelter, called "Mid-Road Dog's House," Thai slang for strays, has more than 400 abandoned dogs.

RUSH OF MONEY

The tsunami devastation brought the Guardians Association a rush of contributions from animal lovers.

The London-based World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) promised 2 million baht ($50,000), Lohanan said.

But stray dogs are a problem all over Thailand and Lohanan said donations his organization received would be spent on abandoned animals in other parts of the country if the projects were approved by the donor.

"Many Thais buy dogs as a fad," he said.

"When the film about Dalmatians was showing, it was a Dalmatian fever and a few months later many of them were left on streets," said Lohanan as he pointed to a Dalmatian-street dog cross at the Mid-Road Dog's House.

"Many of these dogs have been left wandering on the street because their owners' houses are too small for them. And when they play and mate with strays, the owners abandon their puppies."

Bangkok is estimated to have at least 120,000 strays.

In areas of Phuket where they pack together, animal activists say, aggressive stray dogs have attacked people, bringing fears of rabies, especially during the very hot March-May period.

"Before the shelter existed in Phuket, strays were taken from the streets and either poisoned or slaughtered,' said Phuket chief veterinarian Sunart Wongchavalit, who started the 1.6 acre dog shelter last year.

But whenever city officials poison or slaughter some of the island's 2,000 to 3,000 strays, controversy erupts as killing is a sin to Thailand's Buddhist majority.

So Phuket authorities plan a law obliging owners to register and insert identification microchips in their dogs, Sunart said. Owners would be fined if their pets were found abandoned.

"After the law is enforced, we hope to eradicate all strays in Phuket in two to three years."

I know you like dwarves, I can understand that, as I am quite partial to dwarf porn but one-legged chicks- now that could be really interesting. In some positions the second leg does get in the way.

Brother Domino lives in his own universe, a place where ordinary people can't or won't go or won't understand or don't get it. There is no harm on his posts. 2967: I appreciate your ambition but you will not reach those lofty heights if you fly Phuket. (Read below). As regards one legged skanks: yes twice, once in Latin America and once in Europe, blind once (Thailand), dwarves many times, deaf and dumb (several times in Thailand). All I miss from these are the dwarves (good for bench pressing too). I recently did an over priced Japanese skank with Caesarean scars that looked l ike a spiteful mobster put them there. (she kept going on about them as if I cared a fuck about how she looked). Skanks' legs can be a nuisance right enough and their kneefolding habits remind me of one of Gladiator's doomed gazelles. I advise you to seek the no arms out in the much maligned ;) Pattaya and not to resort to sawing the legs off yourself as the more Bolshie skanks might object. You could also try female Muslim prisons but they might not be the best places for mongering.

Here is the Phuket laugh:
Thai airline banned from the UK
A Thai airline has been banned from flying to the UK after an incident in which passengers stopped a plane taking off, believing there was a fuel leak.
Phuket Air did not wish to comment on having its operating licences suspended in the UK and the Netherlands.

But the Department for Transport said the ban was due to the "number and severity" of safety breaches found in Civil Aviation Authority inspections.

The airline still has a plane impounded at Gatwick due to unpaid landing bills.

'Confidence'

Phuket Air did not wish to comment on the licence suspension, but a UK spokeswoman did say the company had chosen to stop flights coming into the UK from 22 April because of a sharp fall in bookings following the tsunami.

Hundreds of British tourists stopped a Phuket Air plane taking off from Sharjah Airport in UAE at the beginning of April because they feared fuel was leaking from a wing.

They were let off the Bangkok-Gatwick plane, but the airline said ground staff had overfilled a fuel tank and there was no danger to passengers.

A second flight sent to pick up the tourists was also delayed at UAE for nearly 11 hours because of further technical trouble, before arriving safely in the UK.

Passengers had refused to fly on the first plane after some passengers screamed as "gallons" of fuel "spewed" from the plane's wing, witnesses said.

At the time Phuket Air threatened legal action, saying no-one was in danger and that some passengers had caused panic and affray.

Safety standards

A Department for Transport spokesman said a recent inspection by the Civil Aviation Authority on a Phuket Air plane found that the aircraft failed to reach safety standards.

The CAA found a faulty collision avoidance system, damaged gearbox and defective emergency lights.

The spokesman added: "The faults on the aircraft were only fairly minor and there was nothing to cause major alarm.

"But when you added all the faults together they didn't reach the safety standards required."

BAA also confirmed it has been holding a Phuket Air plane for the last month and it is unlikely to leave until the airline has paid its landing duties.

gladiator,

i didn't expect you to understand why i said what i said, because you are obviously one of domino's few fans.
i believe that domino is a bright guy but with some severe mental problems.

he reminds me of the movie "good will hunting" with matt damon and robbie williams. in this movie will hunting (matt damon) plays a bright guy who loves to lecture and analyze others and feels superior to each and everyone.

one day he meets sean (robbie williams) who is a therapist. during their first meeting will analyzes sean's life and tries to take it apart just by looking at a single picture. sean is exasperated by will's behaviour but he finally calms down as he realizes that will doesn't know shit. all he knows comes from books but he never really experienced what he is talking about.

you can read about a tragedy or war but if you have never lost a beloved one or have been in a war zone you won't know shit about it.

domino is just like that. he might have read poems and epic stories like "war and peace" by leo tolstoy (who hasn't ?) and even "private dancer" but has he ever experienced situations like these ?

was he ever engaged with a thai girl for more than a few hours/days or did he ever live in los ?
does he only do hookers or did he ever dare to have a relation with a "real" thai ?
if the answer is no, how does it come that he "knows" so much about it and feels entitled to lecture those who actually live there and have done what he is theorizing about ?

i came to the same conclusion like sean : it's nothing but cheap talk from a "know -it-all".

guess juice is right in his assumption that domino lives in his own universe far away from reality.

1. this self confessed child [CodeWord126] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord126) has called me everything. he thinks attacking me will somehow make others forget his specialty, which is breaking thailand's child sex laws. he is now resurrecting his fetish there.
2. his latest is to refer to a fictional movie about a bright teenager, who is embarking on life with a box of talents and who takes advice from his friends. the fictional psychiatrist is played by robin williams who has, by all accounts, given his herpes to a variety of real life sex partners. williams' real life self denial is like ****boy's real life. criminally pathetic self denial.
3, ****boy uses his english as a further shield. read the skinless/****boy thread to see how it varies. also note his smart ass remarks to samus and others about their english (sic). and to you: serial criminals can be very pedantic, as it helps to cover up the forensics. but coming from the background he does, he would know all about that.
4. why does he go into the samus section at all and why does he try to disparage him by saying he is a teacher of english (sic)? probably no little girls where is he currently at? or maybe the hotels insist on id as they know his type.
5. note his shot at war and peace. germany, which spawned book burning, should be careful about shots like that. as thye should be about looking down on english(sic) teachers.
6. i don't want to waste more bandwidth on this dangerous, self confessed criminal. but, as i said before: those with less guile should watch out as they might not escape justice the way this wretch has for so long. child [CodeWord127] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord127) do not get cut much slack.

interesting that the poster who has admitted to taking boys - who he has only just met - out into the deserted countryside alone (how many posters here do this?), is the most vociferous accuser in the forum wrt **** sex.

interesting, also, that the same poster has hinted at being hepatitis positive, yet he lectures others with tedious regularity about the need for responsibility and restraint when mongering in los.

and interesting that the same poster has admitted to bribing police officers and routinely carrying lethal weapons when in los and has asked for advice about how best to dispose of a cadaver, yet is so keen to lecture others on the need to stay within the law.

nicely written and definitely of higher quality than domino's rantings but someone who does what you do should be more careful with remarls about child abuse, it might turn back on you.

may i remind you of what you just posted today in the kenya section ...

regarding the age concerns, this is not thailand: if she looks 18 you fuck her, period, most of them don’t have id’s, like in los, from what i saw, and even for the ones that have them there’s no guarantee that the age on their id’s is their real age...

so it doesn't matter if a girl is ****d as long as she looks 18.
a provided id might be faked so why ask for it, correct ?
are you sure you don't act like that in los too ?

you also believe that no thai girl would provide a faked id.
real smart approach :) at least it guarantees peace of mind.

oh i forgot, did you know that even in "civilized" countries like the usa girls do have faked ids, like the daughters of president bush ?

http://www.pocho.com/news/2001/bush/bushgirls.html

guess you believe fucking a 15yr old who looks like 18 in africa is no child abuse but it is in thailand.

1. i didn't call you names, never. i only allowed myself to oppose you - in a proper way of course - being annoyed by your constant lecturing of others and your "know-it-all" attitude.

2. i was talking about the movie. didn't know that it had any dependency with robbie williams private (sex) life. anyway, does it change the story of the movie ?

3. i don't use my english as a shield. you and gladiator were complaining about it. i am quite satisfied with my language skills but that might be due to my limited abilities :)

4. sad that you can't read or that your memory doesn't work well due to your mental illness. i never said that sa is an english teacher. i just did the opposite. i reminded terry that sa once told us that he is teaching at an international school, but that he isn't teaching english.

5. don't get why you mention the book burning by the nazis. do you feel attracted by them ?
i have no sympathy for them, they have killed some of my family who dared to oppose them. hmm. i see, you and the nazis have something in common, that explains your character assassination. :(

6. you name it. you mental outbreak is nothing than a waste of bandwith.

7. the "children" (one) involved was 17+ (almost 19 by now) and working as a hooker. i am not a uk citizen and it's no crime regarding thai law and the law of my home country were the limits are set at 15yrs (thai) and 16yrs respectively.

we have discussed that matter to full extend. anyway, someone like you who is even satisfied with faked ids (gives peace of mind, eh ?:)) and believes in magic seconds when a girl turns 18 - or with your words develops from a child to a woman, skipping being a girl - should be more careful with such remarks.

i have just spend a couple of weeks with speedtouch and capt jb. why not ask them if they can confirm your insults ?

you still haven't learned that you can't score with this issue and that everybody is sick of it. do yourself a favour and respond in a more civilized way. provide a few arguments, insults are no substitute. you only confirmed what i said before, that you start calling names as soon as someone dares to oppose you.

why such an uncontrolled outbreak by such a wise and eloquent guy like you ?
guess i have hit the spot and you aren't what you claim to be.

traveller,

before boasting about your abilities as a linguist you should first speak properly the language in which you are trying to boast.

regarding your quote of what i said in the kenya section, you should have quoted my whole post, otherwise you are taking things out of context and providing a manipulated truth, as you usually do, in order to try to play down your past -and probably also present- crimes against children.

as i said in the part of my post that you have omitted, kenya is not thailand: girls there don’t normally have id nor, unlike thailand, do they have any reason to lie to you when they say they are 18 since the legal age of consent there is 16, so if they say they are 18 it’s because they really are.

if you are unsure about what i did in thailand read the thailand part of my report. anyone that mongers regularly in thailand knows that checking id’s is a must, it’s rare for a tg not to have id, and if she looks young it’s also suspicious. ‘no id, no go’ is the way to go in thailand as many have told you here before. the 5-6 **** girls whose pictures you posted some time ago looked suspiciously young (i’d say some of them were as young as 15), and i wonder why an ‘expert’ in thailand like you made so many ‘mistakes’, violating thailand’s child prostitution law once and again.

i could understand one error, anyone can make it, but that doesn’t seem to be your case.

Since I'm being re-assigned to Bangkok semi-permanently I would like to get a phone that is monthly billed from Thailand , with international roaming, that will work in both Laos and the US? I will have a work permit, and a Thailand bank account, so the phone account shouldn't be a problem, but my real question is what phone(model?) or type can I use in all three?

It does not matter whether Samus Aran teaches English or not, or whehter he is rich, handsome etc or not. None of those things make him a better or worse person. Some Notes on Thai Law and reasons why you should always ask for ID. (If older women/girls do not have ID, it might be becasue they are criminals)

If the commission of the offence as specified in the first paragraph is committed against a child not
over fifteen (15) years of age, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment of two to six years

My real question is what phone (model?) or type can I use in all three countries? You need a tri-band (900/1800/1900 MHz) handset.

These days most decent handsets are (probably) tri-band.

fact: he has admitted to taking the **** son of a 'skank' (easy to deny allegations from a dirt-poor prostitute who is scorned by local society, isn't it?) out into the isaan countryside, alone, shortly after being introduced to the 'skank's' family.
how many posters are in the habit of doing this sort of thing? ("i won't be around for a few hours. i'm just taking this 7 yo boy, who i just met, off for a long walk into the countryside.") how appropriate, how freudian of him to introduce the ugly spectre of michael jackson to the argument: another man who is believed to use his relative wealth, influence (always make sure you bribe that police chief when you hit those rural isaan towns, dont you ****n*?) and power to cover his tracks.

fact: he has admitted that he once had a partner who was working as a prostitute, and from whom he had contracted several std's. he named, specifically, hepatitis, an illness that is notoriously difficult to treat.

facts: he has admitted to bribing thai police officers as a matter of routine, carrying knives as a matter of routine, and has recently asked for advice on the forum about the most effective way of disposing of a dead body (try this one on the fbi website message board!).

i asked gladiator some questions re: one of his excellent reports in the kenya section. one was about age verification of prostitutes. he replied promptly and courteously (as did joe zop), stating that in kenya this is nigh on impossible, but also irrelevant because the age of consent there is 16 (i understand your argument about 'why should they lie?' btw, gladiator. but you really should take care mate. black girls tend to mature physically at an early age, and a 15 yo wearing make up could easily pass herself off as an 18 yo. but i digress.).
domino has repeatedly used information and opinions from non-thai organisations referring to 'children under the age of 18' in his protracted attack on the traveler. is his argument a legal one? (from a self-confessed law breaker, no less) is it a moral one? is fucking 17 yo girls acceptable in some countries to him but not in others? (domino lives in japan. is the age of consent there still 13?) or is his argument a witchhunt against a poster to whom he has taken a dislike?

this latest round of arguments was started, unprovoked, by domino (as was his recent argument with posterlion). is it only me who notices how civilised and informative this section becomes when he's not around? remember his extended sojourn cruising the arctic tundra? we even managed a fascinating, lively, controversial and polite debate in the normally ludicrous samus aran thread during that period.

it would be great fun if ****n*'s circus act could be enjoyed in small doses. unfortunately, he is an out-of-control lunatic (not name-calling btw, just a simple statement of fact), and it can't.

btw, surely the solution to this '****' issue is to not fuck teenagers, even if they are carrying a (possibly fake) id?

terry,

thanks for following the report.

ac is easily found in tourist hotels, but most tourist hotels, from what i saw, cater to families, couples and similar crap, i didn’t see any nice monger hotel, but i spent there just 1 week, i am a newbie to kenya so maybe someone with more experience could enlighten us… i stayed in shit holes all the time, i also wanted to see, in my limited time, the real africa. next time i’ll look for more comfortable accommodation, i know it exists as some girls told me so, but i didn’t bother to look for it on this first trip.

regarding the age concerns, this is not thailand: if she looks 18 you fuck her, period, most of them don’t have id’s, like in los, from what i saw, and even for the ones that have them there’s no guarantee that the age on their id’s is their real age; this is kenya, where all is inaccurate. on the other hand, the legal age of consent here is 16 yo, so girls have no need to lie to you like in thailand: if they say they are 18 it’s because they are 18. from my limited experience, i’d say most girls you’ll find here are in the range (roughly) 18-28 yo – it’s rare to find girls out of this range on the main hunting grounds. the youngest girls i hunted were 18 and the oldest 26. there are no old people in kenya as you probably can imagine…

regarding travelling, next time most probably i’d still take a matatu because i like to see their way of life, but a taxi is always an option. the mombasa-diani trip by matatu costs around 1 euro; by taxi it’d be around 20 euros. i know that 20 eur for a 30 km ride is dirt cheap under european standards, but it’s good to see how they travel. anyway, if you like to feel comfortable take an ac taxi, there’s nothing wrong with it, i might take it myself next time, who knows?

as for crime, i walked by day and by night in all areas and never had a problem. i did things i’d never do, for instance, in rio, such as walking along the beach at night or along dark, scary streets in ukunda, diani, mtwapa, etc. never had a problem, but i know that there’re some muggings now and then, so it’s best to take precautions. some level of crime does exist, but crime is not rife. i’d say safety is not an issue there (from my limited experience).

gladiator,

i didn't cite you out of context. here is your whole post, but that doesn't change a thing.
you are maybe not breaking any laws in kenya but if you are an uk or us citizen (other countries as well) you are breaking the laws of your homecountry which domino was polite enough to provide for us several times and which do punish people who have sex with girls below 18yrs of age. (btw, in germany the limit is set at 16yrs)

i also don't see why girls in kenya have no reasons to lie but thai girls have.
do you really believe that there are no 15-17yr old hookers around in kenya ?
the people are much poorer than in thailand and ****d in the sex biz are more common as well. nobody is able to exactly determine a girls age just by looking at her. the sun, cigarettes, alcohol and kind of work let them grow old fast.

i see that your ethical values change depending on in which country you might fuck an ****d regarding to the laws of your homecountry. interesting.

it's also interesting that you only live the "no id, no go" rule if it's convienient. if you would be really concerned about this matter - and you should, keeping the laws back home in mind - you would live it always and everywhere. it's no excuse - ask domino - if the girls do not carry ids. in such a case you got to skip them.

anyone that mongers regularly in thailand knows that many tgs look much younger than they are, especially when they are new in the biz, so if she looks young it’s not necessarily suspicious. of course they grow old fast as well if they stay in this kind of biz.

besides the fact that you multiply the cases and that none ever looked and later on proved to be less than 17yrs old, you have most likely made more than one mistake already. what's your excuse ?

don't get me wrong, i don't want to flame you, but i question your high moral grounds and if you are entitled to call someone a **** who you don't even know.

hope you are able to discuss it in a more civilized and mature way than domino. keep it to facts.
i used to like to read your posts, they are full of poetry, keep it that way.

btw, i wasn't boasting about my abilities as a linguist, just tried to help you to understand what i said. telling me repeatingly that my english is bad, doesn't make it better and doesn't change the facts.

domino,

section 8 of the prostitution prevention and suppression act has the constraint "in a place for prostitution", targeting mps, brothels etc., because in these places girls are often forced into prostitution.
section 9 is about procuration and pimping. so why do you cite it ?
haven't you understand it or do you also blame me of being a pimp ?

the lawmakers intention is quite clear, the wanted to punish pimps and the cutomers of these venues in case an ****d was force into prostitution. if you don't believe me, consult a lawyer who is specialized in that matter.
it does not cover agreed sex with non p4p, freelancers, bargirls and the like.

you obviously have no legal typification and twist and torn laws till they fit your agenda.
due to your interpretation a 18yr old guy who fucks his 17yr old girl friend who will turn 18 the very same night is a criminal and a kiddy fucker. ridiculous.

repeating and citing laws out of context and misinterpret them doesn't make your arguments stronger or more valid.

i know that the forum is bored of it to the bones and i am not willing to repeat myself over and over about this issue. if you expect a reply read what has been said about it in the appropriate section.

jackson felt the need to create an entire section, because you went ballistic and totally lost control. you have been caught lying several times and in the end you had to change ids. furthermore you still haven't managed to lay it to rest and use every given opportunity to bring this issue up again and again. are you so fascinated by it ?

you seem to be quite confused as usual, mixing up who said what and when. i again blame your mental state for it. if this is not the reason you probably do it by intent. which is worse ?

may i remind you that you brought up the sa issue, not me. sa is not involved in the whole thing so it was just another example of your distracting techniques. instead of answering straight questions or replying to clear statements - why not reply to terry who has some valid points - you always bring up new issues and new persons. i understand that you get confused by it, cause that's what you want, confusing people so they don't see your helpless attempts to climb out of the pit you have dug yourself.

terry is absolutely correct in his assessment. it's not the issue causing your constant attacks, you only have a dislike in me. why not also attack those members who said they don't even care and fuck any p4p girl, legal or ****d.

domino, arguments should be exchanged in a discussion, not insults.
if the only defense of your position in a debate regarding your "know-it-all" attitude and constant lecturing and flaming of others only consist of calling your opponent a ****, than you obviously got no arguments at all.
therefore i assume that my analysis of you had been correct.

i agree, gladiator's reports are good written and entertaining. he was only dragged into it, because he couldn't withstand to make inappropriate remarks. as long as he doesn't copy your style and techniques we can discuss it in a proper way.

1. I note your insults on another thread. I get freebies, like everyone else. It is no big deal. Samus Aran is mentioned in the context of your need to insult. You go in there to his section, even when it is quiet, looking for a fight, trying to provoke him. Ask yourself why.
2. As Gladiator and others have most recently explained to you, you have broken Thailand's Child Prostitution laws. Freeler was the first to point this out to you. I joined in, hoping to help you see the light. But you are a stubborn liar and you refuse to admit the facts.
3. You have called me just about everything. For your information, I have a very strong legal background and I am well aware of the laws and of how mitigating circumstances come into play, such as an 18 year old fucking a 17 year old. Your big mouth has, imho, obviated any mitigation that could apply in your case and Freeler has again pointed this out to you. You come across as a child predator, much like Michael Jackson does. (I am not assuming his guilt but there certainly seems a strong prime facia case against him, as there is against you.
4. I have not lied and I changed my name with Jackson's approval and on my private suggestion to Jackson. When I was upgraded to senior member, against the wishes of a few of the choir boys, Jackson essentially told them it was none of their business. One of the reasons I changed my name was to distance myself from you.
5. Following on from this, as you may have gathered, I don't like you. Please accept that, just as I accept people do not like me.
6. Terry Troll, as ever, is best ignored.

domino,

you seem to be obsessed with that issue. i don't know why but if you like to read about it, go and read the appropriate section of this forum. it doesn't make sense to discuss it with you since as long as it doesn't fit into your agenda you won't understand.

the discussion started about your "know-it-all" attitude and your constant lecturing and flaming of others.
so i guess you only brought in other people and other issues to distract us, having no arguments that can disprove what i said about you.

where is your wisdom, cleverness and eloquence ?

in your rantings against others you count on the fact that most people don't want to waste their time by fighting back. but due to my work i am online almost continuously which gives me time and occasion to respond. so now here is someone who doesn't let you go away with it as easy as others do.

you and freeler started that character assassination and flame war more than three weeks after i had posted that picture with the warning (what took you so long ?), just after i dared to make a joke about the two of you. what a coincidence !

yes, we don't like each other, i can live with it but you obviously can't.
as soon as you stop to flame me - hidden or open - it will be over.

i also don't get that in any discussion about any issue whatsoever you tend to start that **** stuff again. usually as soon as you run out of arguments. by doing this you really don't give the picture of a bright and eloquent guy.

1. we don't like each other. agreed.
2. so, now that we are agreed on that, you can stop the puerile insults as they are motivated by your dislike/hatred of me.
3. i don't care whether you are online 24/7 or once in a blue moon. (good to see seydlitz back btw). commenting about being online is terry troll's forte. many people, myself included, are online a lot because of the nature of what we do and coming here or to other sites is merely meant as a break for all of us.
4. you seem to be obsessed by my "wisdom, cleverness and eloquence" and whether i am a "bright and eloquent guy". you bring up these personality traits on a regular basis, evidence to me that you wish some of your own traits were different. i say: work on them, don't go on about them. you do have some natural talents you could develop if you spent less time with "the girls".
5. you claim now that freeler and domino flamed you after you flamed us, and you accuse us of flaming! neither of us think you are worth it.
6. both of us -separatey - think you are a danger to children and a dangerous example to others. we don't discu it or you with each other. there is no second front here.
7. my/our main issue with you is "that **** stuff again" as you put it.
8."that **** stuff again" will raise its head every time our paths clash as you have a major problem there and it quite rightly clouds my attitude to you. if ljohnson cannot be bothered reading the fucking forum, that should be pointed out to him, again. it is also not flaming to point out that someone is living in a self delusion.
9. to me, you are the main flamer. when, for example, some dude compared colombian photos to thai photos, you went back through the guy's colombian photos to prove your point, whatever it was. see i don't care which hookers are prettier than other hookers. why? because they are hookers. pay for play. mney talking. geddit?
8. finally today, ve (victory in europe) day is also mother's day. phone her up. do the right thing. you won't regret it. nor will we. better still, visit her and take her out for a meal or whatever she likes. go on! do the right thing.

Seeing that I have been appointed as monitor of posters' internet usage by Headmaster Domino, I thought I'd point out the conflicts between his various statements on the subject.

He has claimed previously that he is online and logged in all the time because he has a broadband connection. We all know he is a very good customer of the budget internet cafes of LOS, but , surely, they dont ALL keep a special connection open for him? Or does he leave himself logged in 24/7 on the public computers (something he advises others against)? Or is he just a sad old man who has nothing better to do most of the time on his vacation than while away the hours perusing the www, in particular sex sites, in internet cafes?

Obviously his pathological lying is just another facet of his complex mental illness.

domino,

fine that we finally agree on something.

even if you won't believe it, but i don't hate you, you aren't important enough for me to hate you. i am not insulting you either, just raising questions and they are motivated by your behaviour, not by my opinion about you.

i am also not obsessed with your "wisdom, cleverness and eloquence", but since you like to lecture everybody you should be smarter than them and you more than once pointed out how eloquent you are.

due to your own remarks i have already developed some of those talents. in the beginning you agreed with freeler and bill, that i am stupid and totally illiterate, in the end i was called being smart and literate. just yesterday you and gladiator complained about my bad english and my bad writing, now i am even witty, not to mention that i am a good photographer too.
im am closing in on you and if this thing goes on any longer i might even overtake you. :)

my joke which obviously ignited that war wasn't meant as a flame, just an innocent joke.
i can laugh about myself, can you ?

what are your accusations based on, a single picture and the fact that i defend myself being called a **** ?
did anybody ever witnessed what you accuse me of ?
do you know anything about me first hand ?
have you ever met me ?

why do you ignore the obvious ?
i hunt the same grounds all of you do, how does it come that nobody else is accused being a ****, even though some guys said they don't even care ?
why no one i have ever met and spent all my time with in los (e.g. tap, speedtouch, capt jb) confirmed your accusations ?
where did i took the pictures i have posted ?

in fact you don't know nothing about me but believe to know my innermost thoughts and start a character assassination which is a crime - read the law - itself.

you are still confused or your memory still leaks: whatever, someone else went through the dude's colombian photos to tell him how stupid he was (he claimed to be a smart guy as well) posting his own face and only inverting it. i never comment pics of other members, that's a sign of bad manners and you can't discuss about taste.

you again prove your bad manners by trying to get my family involved. guess you wouldn't like me to get your mom involved, would you ? anyway, you don't know where she is, maybe she is on my terrace with the rest of my family having some barbecue or she lives in a different country than i do. one more evidence that you don't know nothing about me and my family.

1. visit your mother. even if she is on the terrace at the moment. and everyone else, please visit your mothers. i have no ulterior motive in this.
2. you are to touchy about innocent statements like that. remember your spat about being invited to a tea party?
3. you published a series of photos of ****d hookers you fucked. jackson subsequently removed them.
4. my only complaints about your english concerned your ways to weasel out of the crimes you did. i have never, that i know of, attacked your level of english. i have attacked you for attacking samus aran as a mere english teacher; i dislike such displays of apparent fascism. in the english language, by the way, adjectives such as english have a capital. freeler long ago pointed out this quirk of the english out to jackson when jackson was attacking non native speakers like yourself. samus types quickly and, as a consequence, makes quite a few typo mistakes. leave the flaming to terry t.
5. you have been witty on occasion and you were even witty once with your camera, showing what it could do. whether you are witty or wise, smart or stupid, rich or poor, that changes nothing in my book. you also mentioned that we should be buried near each other so that we could continue this shit beyond the grave. that is witty. but none of that affects me.
7. my main problem with you revolved around the way the skinless/traveler evolved and continues to evolve. i have stated my position on countless occasions.
8. the dude i mentioned made some claims on the relative merits of colombian over thai skanks. totally harmless, irrelevant bs and you went ballistic over it.
9. you are not alone in this. look at the spat going on in the manila section. guys wanting to meet up to duke it out over the beauty (or otherwise) of the skanks in la cafe, manila's biergarten.
10. so, the main issues revolve around fucking **** skanks.

The Traveler
05-08-05, 15:44
Domino,

again you TRY to change facts.

Jackson did not remove the pics because he believed that they violate any forum rule. In fact, he deleted them long after your character assassination began because I asked him to do so.

I don't like to repeat myself, but in your case it seems to be necessary.
I never said that SA is teaching English, I just did the opposite. Terry made a remark about SA's typos (he has quite many for a native English speaking person, typing fast or not) and I pointed out that SA once told us that he IS NOT teaching English. Got it now or did SA lie ?

You complained about my "pitiable English" before you started your insults, therefore you obviously targeted my language skills. Don't worry, I don't mind.

The dude you mentioned was opposed by other members and me for his attitude - not his pics or looks of girls - telling everybody how smart he is and how stupid we are, even though he never had been to LOS. Nothing important and I did not get ballistic either. Just told him that his approach in Colombia was dishonest, since he used to contact the girls using a marriage ad. Nothing more or less. Don't try to make things bigger than they are.

Again you try to distract us by bringing in SA and that dude. There is no connection between them and your accusations. It's only between you and me.

I agree, you have stated your position on countless occasions. Do you think repeating it over and over and bringing it up again on every given occasion has any benefit ?

At least we all can call ourselves being lucky that Mr. Bush is the President of the USA and not you Mr. Domino, because you would nuke all your opponents as you have done with me with your unjustified accusations.

The baboons were not only friendly but they also showed some signs of intelligence (e.g. when crossing the roads): they are close to humans.

Black girls tend to mature physically at an early age

True, they develop faster, especially their supreme bums. The two 18 yo that I hunted would look actually more like 20-21 yo if you evaluated them using a white girl barometer.

They used to say something about Tuberculosis, Elephantiasis, Syphilis, etc. but I can't find anything now. Have the requirements changed lately? Can anyone recommend where I can get this health certificate processed in Bangkok, or tell me what exactly is required?

Thanks.

Laothai,

that certificate is required for your work permit. You can get it in any hospital in Bangkok / Thailand. Go to Bumrumgrad Internation Hospital in Sukhumvit Soi 3, it last 30 min. there (usually). It is not worth to be mentioned, some questions to be answered, eye check, not a real serious examination.

What's a good place to have laundary done anywhere near the Siam Center Area? Of course, Skytrain is so efficient, I probably won't rule out the Shumkumvit area if there's nothing known around here.

Also, what's a good westernized hair cut place? I posted about that sometime back, someone that can understand what "tappered means". I see a few hair styling places in MBK, so maybe I'll just start there if there are no replies.

Why not ask some of your Thai friends who study with you or just the people who rented out the room to you. They will know a cheap one not far from you. Or just take the time to walk around the Sois close to your appartment.

Philo - a laundry and a barber are necessities for those not accustomed to DIY. (Myself, I find a coin operated machine and wash/air dry - if he goes where there are several farangs in the barber, they will probably be able to do "western" cuts - otherwise, a little pa-sa Thai goes a long way - besides, who WANTS long hair in LOS anyway - too sweaty.) Trav's advice about asking locals is pretty good - I'm never there long enough to develop "friendships"

Hamilton W,

The only place that I have ever seen that really looks like a Western Laundry that has dry cleaning hanging and does a decent wash and fold is a place on Soi 4, down from the NEP. Walk down past the entertainment center on the left it is slightly past the 7/11 and across from the Raja Hotel. It is on the corner near a foot massage, Nana Condos and Nana City Inn.

Hamilton W, there is a laundry (4 hour service) on Sukhumvit Soi 11, right across from the Grand President. The service there is good. They do pick up and deliver. I wonder if they would go all the way to Siam Center area. Anyway, attached is a photo of the place. The phone number is on the pic, but I suck as a photographer, and it is too blurry to make out. Anyway, it is on the left side of the soi, as you walk down Soi 11 from the skytrain. I am going to call my friend and ask her about the western style barber. I know there are a couple in the Siam Square/Center area. I just don't remember exactly which one. She would know. I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Two weeks ago, I bought my phone and signed up with Orange service. It's cheap until 31-Dec-2005 as it's only 2 baht for the first minute and 0.25 baht (25 satang) each additional minute. However, the service sucks! I have trouble completing calls during peak times as the network is under capacity.

DTAC has a similar promotion, but some have said DTAC has problems as well.

There's One-2-Call, but the cheap promotions have ended and it's 4 baht per minute.

The four carriers I know of are

1) Orange - want to change because of network problems

2) DTAC - Before I buy another SIM card and change my number, please let me know if you've had good or bad experiences with them

3) One-2-Call - Good network, but the most expensive

4) AIS - I don't know much about this service.

I'm turning to the members here because it's difficult to find out accurate information about the network reliability of these services and I"m looking for feedback.

If DTAC has some problems, it may be that it's still much better than Orange.

My girlfriend uses AIS and she has no problems with the service. I am not sure how the price compares to the others, but as far as service, it is good. My friends that use Hutch and Orange complain about their service all the time. I use One2Call when I am in Thailand, as it is easy to get refills, and I don't really depend on my phone service for any critical situations. My TGF is an engineer, and she is constantly doing field work, so her phone service is critical.

Hamilton,

DTAC has only one advantage, it will forward messages received with Yahoo messenger.

I also use 1-2-Call and am quite satisfied with it. Reception is good almost everywhere. I only had no reception in the Gogos at the lower levels at NEP :) and at very remote places upcountry.

AIS is owned by Thaksin. Same quality as 1-2-Call.

I don't know about the pricing, did never care about it.

Here is an article about mobile problems with congestions in Thailand:

CALL CONGESTION: Cell-phone users take hit at regulator
Published on June 10, 2005

Ask when problem will finally be solved

Mobile phone users took centre stage at a public hearing on the national telecom master plan yesterday and took the opportunity to complain about continuing problems of connecting between networks.

Many of the participants at the daylong hearing, hosted by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), asked the industry regulator when such failures to connect between different networks would be resolved.

“I don’t know how it happened but I could not make any calls from late yesterday evening until night,” said one of almost 1,000people who attended the public hearing.

Other participants said that they had travelled from the provinces to the hearing in Bangkok to let the NTC know of their frustration over call congestion.

“Many people rushed to buy new phones when they could not call out,” another participant said.

After the hearing, the NTC chairman, Choochart Phromprasid, said the commission would call in all mobile service operators to talk with them again about why the problem had not yet been resolved, adding that even he could not make calls sometimes.

Choochart said the NTC would try its best to ease the problem, though it could not step in fully to control all the private concessionaires as it had yet to award any new licences.

Rianchai Riewilaisuk, an NTC commissioner, blamed the heavy call promotions of all mobile service operators as the cause of the call congestion.

Cell-phone users started experiencing problems connecting to different networks in April, when many customers of Total Access Communications (DTAC) started having trouble reaching Advanced Info Service (AIS) subscribers.

DTAC later accused AIS of blocking its customers’ calls, while AIS argued that DTAC’s promotions of low fees had resulted in heavier call volume that congested DTAC’s own network.

After all the operators, including AIS, launched similar extremely low call tariffs, customers of all mobile phone operators started experiencing similar problems.

Last month TOT Corp Plc met with all mobile phone operators to jointly find a solution to the problem and concluded that all mobile phone operators should route their calls only via TOT’s gateway and cancel their direct connections between each other’s networks.

All cellular networks in Thailand are connected via the TOT gateway, but when the TOT failed to expand its gateway to cater to the exploding call traffic, mobile phone operators instead created direct links to one another.

Teerawit Charuwat, TOT’s president, accused the telecom operators of “playing games” with each other in the past, so the problem had yet to be fixed.

Shifting all their call traffic through TOT’s gateway would enable TOT to more easily monitor their call traffic and solve problems for them in a timely manner, he said.

The completed call rate from TA Orange’s network to AIS’s network had dropped to 16 per cent, said Supachai Chearavanont, chief executive of TA Orange. He declined to elaborate. In general, the completed call rate between the two mobile phone operators is about 40 per cent.

AIS, DTAC, and TA Orange executives all said they had already started expanding their network capacities at the TOT gateway.

NTC commissioner Rianchai said the commission would soon launch regulations to control the service quality of telecom operators in order to protect consumers.

tot says ais must speed up its work

bangkok: -- with mobile phone users' frustration mounting over the inability to make calls, mainly to numbers on the advanced info service (ais) network, industry executives are scrambling for solutions.

tot corporation says the problem rests with ais, which was supposed to have beefed up its gateway to the tot network by june 5, which would have improved cross-network call handling. ais says it needs another two or three weeks to complete the work, given the technical and procurement challenges.

meanwhile, second-ranked dtac says 85% of call attempts made by its customers to ais numbers are ending in failure. third-ranked mobile provider ta orange says the failure rate for its customers is 86%, compared with the ``normal'' average of 40%.

fixed-line phone customers have also been feeling the pinch, ever since tot called on all operators to terminate their direct interconnection arrangements and to route all of their calls through tot starting on june 5.

that was the date by which the state telecom enterprise expected its gateway would be ready to handle whatever came its way, assuming ais was ready.

direct interconnections involving individual operators had been standard practice for years, with tot and its state enterprise sibling cat telecom turning a blind eye to the legality of the arrangements.

the issue has come to a head in recent months as all operators feel the strain of accommodating a surge in mobile usage, spurred mainly by their own cut-rate calling plans. dtac at one point accused ais of deliberately blocking calls from customers of the no. 2 provider.

under the solution brokered by tot, ais was to install an additional 960 digital trunk interconnect points to tot gateways, while dtac would set up 700 points and ta orange 480, enabling tot to accommodate a combined 64,000 cross-network calls simultaneously.

tot president teeravit charuwat said dtac had installed 645 connection points but ais was far behind in its work. the result, he said, had been severe traffic problems, in particular between the peak evening hours of 5 and 10 pm.

``tot should not be blamed now since the problem is because of ais,'' he said.

however, an ais executive said the company would be able to complete the connection expansion within this month, and would transfer its interconnection links with dtac to tot immediately.

the executive, who asked not to be named, attributed the delay mainly to time-consuming technical procedures.

he said ais and tot had 1,600 circuit cards linked directly with each other. ais also has direct interconnection gateways with 500 circuit cards with dtac, 200 with ta orange and 100 with the provincial fixed-line telephone operator tt&t.

``if tot wants us to quickly complete the interconnection expansion, we could shut down existing direct links with dtac, ta orange and tt&t immediately to meet the requirement,'' he said.

he also said that the heavy pricing promotions, offering mobile calling rates as low as 25 satang a minute, had caused call traffic to triple and led to connection problems.

thana thienachariya, chief commercial officer of dtac, said that to resolve the congestion problem at its root, ais should continue to upgrade its existing direct interconnection links with the dtac network together with increasing links with the tot gateways.

``tot interconnection facilities alone would not be adequate to accommodate call traffic for all operators,'' he said.

mr thana said the connection problem was now an industry-wide one and that rather than pointing fingers at each other, all operators should co-operate in the interests of consumers.

however, ais maintains that additional direct interconnection links with dtac would require tot tot approval, since ais is its contracting party under the original concession agreement.

Foreign weddings in Chiang Mai are extremely popular, and it is definitely a good town for couples or honeymooners.

I think the most popular wedding venue right now is the new Mandarin Dhara Dhevi Hotel.

There is a Chiang Mai web-forum (not a sex-forum), I think the address is:

I'd imagine asking there would get you all the answers you need.

In the past when I came here on Vacation, I always purchased my condoms at home and brouhgt them here. After learning my lesson once in Phuket, I noticed the size was too small.

Ever since then, I've been bringing my own supply of Trojans and Lifestyles.

Now that I'm living here, I was assuming I'd find some place that carries these brands. So far, I've found no place that carries these brands.

Is there anyplace in BKK to purchase Trojan or Lifestyles brand condoms?

What's interesting is that Lifestyle codoms, sold in America, are actually manufactured and packaged in Thailand.

If not, is there a brand of condoms in the larger-standard size?

If I can't find a place here that sells them, I may have to ask a friend or someone here to deliver me some when they arrive on their next trip.

JuiceSpike, thanks for posting that article, very informative.

I haven't changed from Orange yet, but I may change to DTAC as I think it's not as bad as Orange. During peak hours, I still have incredible difficulty completely calls.

What really makes me wonder is why voicemail notifications take so long. Last week I received two calls: The first on Wedneday morning and the second on Thursday afternoon. At 5:35 p.m. on Friday, I was notified by Orange by text that I had two new voicemails and the number to call to check them. This is obsurd being notified of new messages 24 to 48 hours after the message is left.

for guys that want to make bangkok a permanent home here is info on buying a condo...

how to buy a condominium in thailand

condo in thailand

now is a good time to purchase that sukhumvit condo. though prices are on the high side compared to a few years ago, interest rates are coming down and banks and finance companies, who wouldn’t even lend cash-starved customers an ear a couple of years ago, are now throwing money at anyone who walks through their doors.

unless you happen to be an alien, that is.

yep, alien. that is what the government calls foreigners, as in “laws governing the acquisition of immovable property by aliens in thailand”, a publication by property consultants sansri plc that instructs aliens how to manoeuvre their spacecraft through the warp factor 9 of thai property law.

while cheery bank managers are handing out mortgage loans to locals who want a piece of immovable property to call their own as part of the government’s consumer-led economic recovery, they tend to be a bit pickier about handouts to aliens. i can’t say i blame them. if an alien came up to me and wanted to borrow some money, i’d be a little suspicious too.

however, some finance companies are becoming more amenable. with the right credentials and a pay packet, finding an institution willing to front expatriate residents with a mortgage is not impossible.

under present conditions (finance companies are lending up to 90 per cent of a property’s value, with repayment terms between five and 20 years), if you manage to secure a long-term mortgage and select a well-maintained condominium block in a location with high occupancy, then you should be able to comfortably match your loan repayments with the rent-equivalent of the unit.

as it stands, foreigners can own a freehold unit in a condominium. also, the may 1999 amendment land code act states, in bad grammar, that “aliens” can own land not exceeding one rai (about 1,600 square metres) for residential purposes if they bring into the country “foreign currency... in an amount to be specified in ministerial regulations which shall in no event be less than bt40 million and obtain permission from the minister of interior”. unfortunately, no one has yet got around to issuing the ministerial regulations. besides, the minister of interior is a very busy man, so it’s not as if you can just pop into his office with your bankbook and ask him if it’s now okay to buy that block of land you fancy on phuket’s west coast.

the condominium market is active, but with 20 per cent of units in bangkok unsold, prices have been held in check. a high vacancy rate also means you can afford to be fussy and tip the balance in your favour when hammering a deal.

in a city were it can take all day to pay the water bill, being near things is very important. choose the location wisely. and if at some stage you choose to rent it out, be wise.

when searching for a location think about easy access to the skytrain. if you are deep inside a soi, are there taxis or motorbike taxis around? how far is a decent supermarket, convenience store? check out the neighbouring buildings. could your view be blocked after suffering a year or two of construction noise as a 30-story apartment building rises from the rubble?

take a good, long look at the building. go there during rush hours to see what the traffic is like. are pipe and electrical shafts sealed off between floors to prevent fire rising up the building? what fire protection and alarms systems are available? are the fire escapes clear and the exit doors unlocked?

what is the condition of the common areas – sparkling pride or peeling neglect?

are there any signs of leaks on ceilings and around the windows? are the windows double-glazed and floors and walls sound-proofed? are there telltale tidemarks on the walls and sandbags stored in the basement?

there are many more issues to consider.

do your potential neighbours own or rent? do they own or rent a karaoke machine? do they skulk suspiciously in the hallways in the evening? who manages the condominium? is it a reputable company? have you seen the juristic person accounts? what is a juristic person? what about the sinking fund? what are the management charges?

and what about all that burdensome paperwork and tiresome face-downs with bureaucrats that follow an agreement to purchase?

many of these questions lead inextricably to a single and even more important question: where do i get a decent property lawyer?

fortunately, most of the better property consultancies offer this service and i for one would pay them handsomely to avoid the anguish of going it alone.

tisco finance plc’s website – www.tiscogroup.com – gives details for foreigners wanting to take out mortgages, and has a handy mortgage calculator so you can work out your monthly repayments over a given period.

Robeco,

if you want to buy a condo in Thailand you have to transfer the money to Thailand. You also have to state clearly on the transfer form that this money will be used to buy some property. Your bank in Thailand will then issue a form that you will need when registering your new property.

If you live and work in Thailand you don't have to transfer money from your homecountry and bank loans are allowed, but no bank will lend you any money, forget about that. Guess they had to many loans by foreigners which weren't payed back during the Asia crisis a few years back or they have other reasons.

For legal advice you should see a lawyer who might tell you about the laws involved and the different ways to buy property. Since you can't read Thai you will need one anyway.

A condo can be registered on your own name, so no Thai needs to be involved (e.g. your Thai spouse) which is more secure in case you will get seperated in the future. I have posted a lengthy overview about a year ago about the different ways of buying property in LOS. Have a look at it.

But, yes, I do live in Thailand (Chiang Mai and Bangkok mostly).

Buying a condo is easy enough, although I've always bought them outright so no idea about borrowing from Thai banks. You're most likely better off borrowing the money in your own country. (Although, I do know that you can borrow from Thai banks once you own a Thai property as collateral, if you want to buy further properties).

The Traveler made a good point- the purchase money MUST come from outside of Thailand. When you register properties after purchase, you'll need to have the Thai bank (that the overseas funds were transferred to) provide you with the letter that shows the money came from overseas. (When you make the transfer you don't need to specify what it is for as TT suggested though). You must do this from the branch where your Thai bank account is held, it takes about five minutes and costs 200 Baht.

There are also a bunch of taxes and fees and other crap to pay but usually this is the seller's responsibility.

The boring stuff is sitting around at City-Hall in Bangkok (or wherever you've purchased) registering the ownership- pretty straightforward but can be time consuming, take a good book or a good girl.

All very easy.

Coma Boy,

I intend to buy a condo myself on my next trip. I used to own some properties in the past as well but all were registered on a Ltd.

As far as I know you not only have to transfer the money from overseas but you also have to declare on the transfer form that the money will be used to buy some property. No need to specify which property, but if you do not declare what it is intended for, the Thai bank won't provide the letter needed to register the property.

Anyway, it does no harm to declare the purpose of the money transfer, you can still change your mind, use it otherwise or transfer it back home. It also doesn't cost you a dime, just a bit ink on the paper. Better be safe than sorry.

The boring stuff is sitting around at City-Hall in Bangkok (or wherever you've purchased) registering the ownership- pretty straightforward but can be time consuming, take a good book or a good girl.

I usually go alone when legal stuff has to be done. Last time I had to extend the license for my motorbike, took a number and waited to be called. When they called me the girl at the counter first said it will need about an hour but after chatting with her for a minute she waved me a smile and told me it will only need ten minutes. She obviously liked me and let the others wait. :) That won't happen if you go with a girl.

Wherever you are in the world buying is always better than renting if you are to be in one place for more than a couple of years.

There was an article in The Economist in March that was explaining that the exact opposite is now true in most developped countries. The real estate markets in most cities in the Western World is so much over-valued that, even if you do not believe in an imminent crash, at least it is reasonable to assume that there can be no capital gain since haqrdly anybody can afford to buy.

And without the prospect of capital gain, buying instead of renting is not all that attractive.

Renting gives you much more flexibility, far less exposure to risk, and allows you to distinguish in your budget what is an expense, i.e. the rent, from what is an investment (real estate, bonds, stocks, ...)

It could be that much of that does not apply to the Thai economy, though. I'd be curious to hear the opinion of those living there.

The Traveler- Non-immigrant B visa, no work permit. Valid for one year and have to leave the country every ninety days. Apparently these are to be valid for three years soon, which will be much appreciated.

Dinghy- No, that was someone else, I don't work here at all.

Seydlitz- You may well be correct, but I always see rent as dead-money. I tend to buy properties that I just can't resist rather than properly thinking the plan through, but so far so good. I have put a hold on new purchases though as I'm expecting (hoping for) a price redadjustment as there seem to be so many overpriced BKK properties right now, and am sure that supply is overtaking demand.

Hi guys,

I want to find a few shops while I'm in BK next month. I'm looking for an outdoor clothing shop (I need a new rain suit) and a hobby shop. Is there some sort of yellow pages in English?

Thanks, Raul

Seydlitz,

You caught Coba Boy on some major back-pedaling. On one hand, it's buy not rent. Then it's well, everything is currently overvalued.

It's foolish to insist that owning is always better than buying, especially if you are in a foreign country without a 20-30 yr plan. Consider that the Thai SET had the highest gain in the world during 2003. No where to go but down from there.

I state this as a property owner in the US county with the highest value gain during 2003. Sure glad I bought. However, the Asian markets (housing included) are especially volatile. Also consider transaction costs and taxes on sales. May not be such a great deal.

[QUOTE=Seydlitz]There was an article in The Economist in March that was explaining that the exact opposite is now true in most developed countries. The real estate markets in most cities in the Western World is so much over-valued

Seydlitz

Seydlitz- You may well be correct, but I always see rent as dead-money.

It is a common perception, largely born from the high inflation, low or negative real-term interest rate mortgages of the late sixties and seventies.

And there are lots of hidden costs in owning a property. Total cost of ownership is the thing to consider.

Seydlitz,

My property went up by some 300% while I owned it. Should I sell I get MORE than what I paid for the house+all the interest I paid+payments on my mortgage+propety tax+all insurance+all my gas and electricity bills...

That's what the guys from Diesel mean by 'successful living'. Your house can be a big moneymaker - no need to work your ass off at all:). Get a job you like and holiday as much as you can while your home turns to ca$h.

But ok, should I be moving around all the time, jobhopping or something:(, of course I would rent:(. Or live in hotels with a different honey for my money every night:D.

Seydlitz
06-28-05, 18:26
Freeler,

Yes, that is the whole point: capital gain. With it, it can be a jackpot, without it, it is not such a great investment.

In today's economy, entering the market at those inflated prices does not make it likely that capital gain can happen a few years down the line.

And those lucky owners of a property that appreciated much in the recent past still need a place to live, which might be why they do not sell. Or maybe they believe the bullish market is going on. The capital gain remains virtual until it is cashed in.

In fact, if I was in that situation, I would sell to the highest bidder, and laugh all the way to the bank. Then I would rent hassle free. I could buy if I wanted, but I won't.

Seydlitz, Coma

property in Thailand is still cheap compared to other countries.
A condo with 50sqm can be had for about 700.000 around Sri Nakarin and about 2.5 million at Sukhumvit. Sure, prices went up slightly during the last couple of years but I doubt that they will come down soon.

As we all know, three factors determine the value of your property : 1.) location 2.) location 3.) location.
Since space is limited along the major roads (close to BTS or subway) I guess that prices might come down as soon as the BTS or subway will be extended and therefore the demand of condos in the center will come down.

Anyway, as long as I can get a nice house with some land in the outskirts of BKK or anywhere else in the country (even in Pattaya) for the same amount I would have to pay for of a condo in BKK, I would always prefer the house and the (hopefully) fresh air.

Girls can be had everywhere in LOS and nobody should buy some property just because it is close to some bars, gogos and the like. After a while it will get old anyway.

Well for the last couple of days I have been going to the Big C department stores and Tesco's/Lotus to do some mini shopping. I can do some serious racking up in these places!!. The prices were cheap as hell!. Not going to bore you with a long story, but me being the only black person amongst the real Thai people was great. I could've racked up a lot of numbers, but I wanted to behave.

Don't you mean "the women liked my diamond studded earrings and they did not bother about my skin"? 'Cos your DIAMOND earrings are telling the girls that you got some money!

When I was in LOS last year, I felt myself in a "neutral" situation as I also was the only black person walking around.

So what do you mean, you felt "great" being the only black person?

After several trips to LOS I’m now in the first/study phase of buying a property in Thailand and I’m looking for all the help I can get.

I intend to buy a house around Pattaya, I do not have a Thai girlfriend, let alone a wife.

I plan to buy a little house, I don’t care much about size, 60/70 square metres might do, but I do want my swimming pool.

Some suggestion would be highly appreciated, like which estate agent is more competent/less rip off in your experience?

How easy will it be to buy it establishing a limited company?

And in case sell it if I need to cash in the capital gain? Risks you’ve encountered?
Best area around Pattaya/Jomtien/Naklua in your view? Why?

For some years I would rent it, possibly with the help with some agency (less money for me but less risky as well), I would use the house only for holidaying a few weeks per year, until my permanent move to LOS, that is.

Thanks in advance in any case.

Enjoy Thailand.

Hi jayf1970

There was also a dental hospital on Sukhumvit but I never go there.

Look much to expensive for me but if you have the money.

http://www.dentalhospitalbangkok.com/index_eng.htm

The Bumrungrat hospital was the most expensive hospital I know maybe you pay even more there.

Most farang living in Thailand went to Pattaya for a dental treatment.

If you only have to take 1 tooth out it can be done nice and easy everywhere about 500 Baht.

But an implant of just 1 (one) tooth was still about 60.000 Baht there.

Alistair,

setting up a Ltd. is very easy, every lawyer will do that for you for about 50.000 baht.

Only risk I can see is that you can't sell it. BTW, you probably won't find such a small house with a swimming poool. Guess you rather got to buy a house with enough land around it and build it by yourself.

Land in Pattaya is already overpriced, Naklua and Jomtien are also quite expensive but the better deal. Jomtien is the better choice in my opinion, being close to the beach will always be an advantage if you like to sell.

Think twice, if you think you might be able to rent it out around the year except for your holidays, that probably won't work out.
First, the tenant won't move just for a couple of weeks just for you.
Second, there are many properties in and around Pattaya for sale/rent who can't find a customer. Only people who will stay there for an extended period of time would rent a house, otherwise a hotel/condo is much more convenient. Only the high quality properties might be rented out by companies for their employees.

Depending on location you will have to take care about garbage collection, security, pest control and so on, not to forget your water supply which can be a prob during dry season. You will have to buy your water cause there is often no public water supply. Who will take care of the garden if you aren't there ?

A condo with communal swimming pool is the better alternative if you don't stay there. I had several houses in the past and even though it was nice when being there, it sometimes was a pain in the ass when I was away.

Better buy when you permanently move to LOS. As you know, the value of your property largely depends on location. If you buy now, you might be in a nice and calm surrounding, but in a couple of years your house might be just behind a hotel, bar area or at a road with a lot of traffic. Pattaya and around is still developing which might be a chance but can be a risk too. Choose the location wisely.

I understand that one must be Khon Thai to own land (Thai nationality). You can own condos though

The Traveler

Sumimazen,

the answer to your question is yes and no.
Foreigners are not allowed to own land BUT a farang can own land up to 1 rai, if you invest a lot of money into state issued bonds or into some business (40 million baht as far as I remember). Furthermore this land is limited to a housing project only, no other use allowed.

Even Thais who are married to a foreigner are not allowed to buy any land. They can keep the land they owned before marriage and get some more if it's part of a heirship or a present. But if they want to buy some land their foreign partner has to sign a document, that the money which will be used to pay for the land solely belongs to the Thai and that he/she will never request ownership. All rights are exclusively at the Thai. Thai authorities will also check if the value of the land exceeds a certain (unspecified) amount. If they think it is too much they will refuse to issue that document.

Due to this a Ltd. is the easiest way for a farang to buy a house.
You could also buy the land in the name of your spouse and secure a lifelong right of abode, but that wouldn't be very smart. If you should ever seperate from your spouse her family will make you feel like living in hell as long as you live in the house. Better have a mortgage registered, this way you can force them to sell the house to pay back the mortgage to you. There are several other ways to secure your investment. Always act smart and don't forget that people might change.

BTW, I never heard that anyone bought a house without owning the land it was build on. That wouldn't make much sense, cause the owner of the land will automatically own the house. Everything build on his/her land is his/her property.

1. I know people who are doing this with no problem though they may well the minority. It probably depends on your relationship to the spouse/officiial buyer.
2. This is very common in all developed countries and would almost certainly be the case in a block of aprartments for example. The apartment owner would lease the land for a specified period of 30, 99, 999 etc years.

1. I explained why it wouldn't be smart. Relationships can change and would you really like to depend on that ?

2. His question was regarding houses, not apartments/condos. BTW, if you buy a condo in Thailand - just like anywhere else - you will in most cases also own the appropriate share of the land on which the condos are build on. That's the reason why foreigners are limited to own not more that 49& of a condo building in Thailand.

Domino,

I know about ground rents but it isn't a good choice in my opinion. Why should I buy/build a house and totally depend on the land owner if he decides to not prolong the contract after (e.g.) 30yrs. This is even worse because in 30yrs most of us will be quite old and it will be harder to move. 99yrs might be an alternative but try to find such an offer. Most people who offer property do own the land and want to sell it knowing that most people prefer to actually own the land they build a house on. BTW, there is no renting period of 999yrs.

Anyway, it seems that you are quite frustrated, or why did you decide to insult LJohnson, Terry, me .... ?

Here is some info about buying property in Thailand:

How can I buy an apartment, condominium, land or a house in Thailand?

Although the law does not allow foreigners to own land in Thailand, they can own the buildings on the land. However, there are exceptions:

A foreign company may buy land if it has Board of Investment (BOI) privileges and the land is part of the project (usually manufacturing). Ownership is tied very strictly to the BOI terms and conditions agreed with the company.
A new law (Land Code Section 96, 2002) allows a foreigner to buy up to one Rai (half an acre) of land to build a house in approved metropolitan areas like Bangkok and Pattaya, providing they also invest at least 40 million baht for five years in government bonds, recognized property mutual funds or BOI projects. Permission for this must be obtained from the Interior Ministry and the ownership is monitored by the Land department.
Companies and partnerships also fall under the strict laws on land ownership by foreigners. A foreigner can only own up to 49% of a company and this restricts the ownership of land as well. It is often difficult for even a company with 51/49% ownership unless you use an experienced real estate lawyer. This is why Holt-Realty recommends Somphob & Associates Law to all our clients. The Alien Business Law does not allow foreigners to engage in "land trading".
Can you give me practical advice on the best way to buy property?

There are a number of possibilities. Our lawyers, Somphob & Associates, will be able to advise you on the best solution for your needs:

Leasehold: Thai law allows a maximum lease period of 30 years, with the possibility to extend for a further 30+30 years. At the end of each term, both parties must register the renewal with the Land Department and pay government fees, including stamp duty. This gives the lessee "ownership" of the land. The downside is that the Lessor may not wish to renew, or the law may change to your detriment in the future. Any capital you invest into leased property is therefore liable to be lost. In addition, leased land is not easy to trade.
Nominee: You can nominate a Thai to own the property for you. Definitely not recommended.
Nominee with a mortgage: You can lend the price of the property to a Thai under a legally executed mortgage or loan agreement. There is a small fee payable at the Land Office to register it. The advantage to this is that the nominee cannot sell the property until the mortgage or loan has been repaid in full. Our lawyers will also set up a Last Will & Testament when they set up this type of transaction so that if the foreigner dies first the mortgage or loan is discharged in full and the Thai can inherit the property. If the Thai nominee dies first the foreigner can inherit the land, but must sell it to a Thai within 12 months. We always recommend that foreigners buying property in Thailand also write a new will to avoid any future problems for the Executors and Beneficiaries.
Freehold: Foreigners can buy and own condominiums Freehold, giving you full ownership rights to buy, sell, trade and bequeath your condominium. However, the law states that foreigners may only own up to 49% of any condominium building. So make sure your lawyer checks this before buying a property. The seller must also provide a document from the Juristic management office stating that the condominium is free from all debts.
Company Ownership: We recommend setting up a company when buying a house, land, or other property that is not a condominium. Our lawyers can help you do this and ensure that you control the property without interference from your nominee Thai partners.
What is the difference between a Lease and Leasehold?

When you rent an apartment, you sign a Lease. Typically, a lease is for a minimum 12 months in Thailand, although some landlords may consider a shorter or longer term. When you sign a lease, you are required to pay a 2 month deposit which is refundable when you move out, less any charges for damage to the property.

There are 2 types of Land Title Deed: Freehold and Leasehold. Leasehold means that the buyer is only leasing the property from the land owner for a pre-determined period of time. Thai law stipulates that a property sold with a Leasehold title deed is only valid for up to 30 years. Renewal for a further 30 years only is at the discretion of the lease holder (land owner). Property owned by the Crown Property Bureau is always Leasehold. Some private property owners may also sell their property with a leasehold title deed. These are the conditions in operation today (2005), but they may change at any time in the future. Obviously, buying leasehold property has its drawbacks.

A Freehold Land Title Deed, on the other hand, gives full ownership rights to purchasers, including the right to buy, sell, or lease the property, pass it on to their heirs, and to develop the property within the guidelines under Thai law. Foreigners may own a condominium freehold; with full rights of ownership. You should always consult a qualified real estate lawyer before signing any purchase agreement.

If I buy property and want to live in Thailand, how can I do that?

You can apply for a visa, depending on the type of residency laws you would like to stay here under. For example, if you plan to buy a property and run a business, you can apply for a business visa. Or if you plan to retire you can apply for a retirement visa. The answers to this question are far too complex to go into here. We recommend you talk to your lawyer about this before buying any property.

What is a condominium? What is an apartment?

A condominium is like a flat (apartment) you can own in common with other owners of units within a high-rise with complete facilities. This means that each tenant is a shareholder in the building and they pay a monthly management fee based on the square meter size of their apartment to maintain the building and public areas.

Foreigners may own a condominium freehold; with full rights of ownership.

An apartment is a building owned by one owner who lets out units within the building on a short or long-term basis.

What is a Townhouse?

A townhouse is a single vertical dwelling, in a block of similar verticle dwellings, each owned by one owner.

Can you help me decide where to live?

Your agent should be able to suggest the best place to live, based on the information you give him.

Will you help me overcome the language barrier?

Yes of course! You can call on us any time for help. However, most condominium and apartment building managers speak at least some English and should be able to understand you.

How do I pay the utility bills?

If you are renting, most buildings will pay the bills for you and add them to your monthly rent. It is a good idea to find out the cost of utilities before you move in so that you know how much you will have to pay. If you are living in a house, we can advise you on the best methods of payment. For example, most utility bills can be paid direct from your bank account and the receipts sent to your residential address. Nowadays, you can also pay utility bills at any 7/11 store. When buying, you should also inquire about telephone and electricity connection fees.

How safe is it to live in Thailand?

Thailand has an enviable reputation as a very safe place to visit and to live. The people are friendly, and there is relatively little crime against foreigners. However, like anywhere else in the world, there is always the potential for crime. If our agent feels an area you visit is not safe, he should advise you and suggest alternatives. We all want you to enjoy your stay here!

You have probably read the recent news about the Muslim unrest in the three southernmost provinces. The government is working to solve this problem. Despite the rhetoric of a few Muslim hot heads, relations between Muslims, Thais and foreigners throughout Thailand have always been friendly and tension-free. Knowing some of the people involved in security work in the Kingdom, we are confident that Thailand will continue to remain a safe and pleasant country to live in. More....

Will I need to bring my own furniture? And can I buy quality furniture in Thailand?

There are plenty of fully furnished apartments and condominiums available. If you don't plan to stay in Thailand permanently, it may be better to leave your furniture in storage back home. It will probably be too heavy for the tropics anyway. Even if you plan to rent or buy a house, you can always get one fully furnished. If you prefer to furnish it yourself, your agent can advise you on the best places to shop.

What sports and exercise facilities are available?

Thailand offers a wealth of sports, including golf, trekking, para-gliding, diving, fishing, golf, squash, jogging venues, and so on. Serviced apartments and condominiums usually have their own exercise rooms and swimming pools. Ask your agent to show you properties with the facilities you want.

I have heard there are bad floods here sometimes. Will I have to worry about them?

In the bad old days floods were a problem every year. Some years were worse than others. But since the Bangkok government has installed anti-flooding measure, flooding is not a big problem in Bangkok any more. The drainage system has been upgraded and is well maintained so that even the worst floods will drain away within a few minutes...hours if we have a particularly heavy downpour. If you plan on living outside Bangkok your agent can advise you on the best places to live to avoid the problem.

How fast can you find me somewhere to live?

As fast as possible. We will prepare a list of properties that have the features you are looking for after we discuss your needs with us.

What about schooling for the children?

Thailand boasts some of the best international schools in the region in all the most highly populated centers like Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. Fees are high, but so are their teaching standards. In addition, there are some excellent private Thai schools. Your agent will tell you which schools are located in the area you would like to live.

What is the minimum rental contract, and what are the terms and conditions?

Most rental periods are for one year, although some shorter terms are available. In most cases you will need to pay a 2 month deposit, and one month rental in advance when you sign the contract. Sometimes, especially for longer contracts, the landlord may require 3 months deposit. The deposit is refundable when you move out, although the landlord may deduct expenses for any damage to the property during your tenancy.

I'm moving to Thailand, which is a completely new country with different customs. What can you do to make it easy for me?

If you plan to stay here for more than 1 year and you have never been here before, we recommend you take a cross-cultural seminar that will explain the many strange and different things you will encounter in your daily life.

Do I have to pay an agent any additional fees for finding me a property in Thailand?

Not usually. The seller or rentor will pay your agent's fees.

What is the procedure if I buy a Condominium?

The procedure for buying a condo is extremely easy. The first step is to select the property you want to buy and ensure that it has a Chanote (or at least a Nor Sor 3 Gor) freehold Land Title Deed. Your agent will negotiate the best possible price for you and the seller. When you have agreement, ask for a copy of the Land Title Deed from the seller. The buyer pays for the lawyer's fees. The seller (usually) pays the transfer fees and taxes, as well as the agent's commission. Then follow these steps:

Visit your lawyer with the seller and your agent where we will lay out the terms of the deal, and give the lawyer all the documents, including a copy of your passport and bank account details from you, and the land title deed. At this stage, you may be asked to give a deposit to the seller, usually 20% of the purchase price. You will be issued with a receipt that states you will forfeit the deposit if you pull out of the deal for any reason. The seller should be required to repay your deposit in full plus 50% if they pull out of the deal for any reason, or if the land title deed does not clear at the land office. Your agent should ask the seller to allow the lawyer to hold the money in escrow until the deal is completed. Once these arrangements are made we can leave the rest of the work to the lawyer until you are ready to sign the sale papers and pay the purchase price.
The lawyer will prepare a Sales and Purchase Agreement ready for both parties to sign.
The lawyer will send one of his staff to the land office to check that the land title deed is free and clear from any encumberances, debts, etc. He will advise if there are any problems with the title deed.
Meanwhile, your agent or lawyer will take you to the bank to open a bank account if you don't already have one. New restrictions have been imposed on foreigners opening bank accounts in Thailand, but your agent should be able to help you overcome these legally.
You will transfer the full cost of the condominium to your bank account, less any deposit you have already paid.
The lawyer will accompany you to the bank when the money arrives to work with the bank to get the proper paperwork required for a condominium purchase.
The lawyer will call another meeting when everything is ready to conclude the deal. You normally meet at his office, sign the papers, and hand over to the seller the cashier's cheque (or money in whatever form you are paying).
When this is done the lawyer will accompany you and the seller to the land office to complete the transfer of the land title deed to you, the new owner. This should only take a few hours, but it could take up to 4 or 5 days in some circumstances. Don't worry. Once you and the seller have signed all the sales and purchase papers and handed over the money the property is legally yours and you are fully protected under Thai law.

Phuquer,

if you really want to buy some property in LOS you might also want to have a look at a post I posted about a year ago

http://www.internationalsexguide.info/forum/showpost.php?p=247142&postcount=218

The Thailand Realty Industry is not regulated so watch out for agents forcing you to sign contracts and check the title deed to make sure the property is what it says. Do yourself a big favour and obtain a House Inspection report which in effect pulls the holes out of the property.

Some buyers have bought a house only to find the land is on a different title and visa versa or the cracks have been disguised. Once you buy then its your problem. Many Estates will try to sell a house in a developing block which has but one title with say 10-20 houses on it. They probably have 2 mortgages and want to unload the houses before they pay off the loan and secure the titles for their owners. Or will they ???

The same goes with the boundaries of the property which need to be the same as the title deed. In Thailand there's no survey pegs as such but they do use concrete pegs and it is an important point. Sometimes vendors deliberately understate property area or move so called pegs. If the building is under construction or the land is having a subdivision look carefully at the provisions for issuing a title, and easement rights for say roadways. as a foreigner you can lease for 30 years or form a company to hold the house.

There are different kinds of title deeds :

Sor Kor 1 This document means that land occupants are occupying or making use of certain land plots, whose ownership has not been claimed by any entity. The document does not indicate legal possession of the informer so one cannot transfer the ownership of the property to any one else.

The Sor Kor 1 is rare now as the government's land ownership legislation has covered most area of the country.

Nor Sor 2 states the government's permission for person or legal entity to make use of land temporarily. Need to utilize at least three-quarters of the land plot within three years after the document issuance. This right is non transferable. At the finish, land occupants can seek the right to demand higher privileged title deed.

Nor Sor 3 is a governmental letter certifying a utilization of certain land plot by certain people and that the plot of land has been surveyed and its official map created.

Nor Sor 3 A is similar to the Nor Sor 3 certification. The only difference is the map survey of the land plot based on an aerial-viewed photograph of the land.

Ownership Title Deed or chanote is the ultimate certification of land ownership. Holders of the title deed have full rights to transfer or sell the
properties and to bar other parties from violating their rights over the land protected by the ownership title deed law.

If you buy a condo you don't have to care about title deeds and the like. But you should beware and check things like

security
water supply (especially during dry season) and water pressure
cable or satellite tv (are the signal boosters ok ?)
noise (some condos are like a graveyard Mo-Fri, but extremely busy on weekends)
cleanliness (floors, entry hall, pool etc.)
maintenance (lifts etc.)
are there any problems with insects (ants, roaches)
car park

what communal services are available
pool
gym
sauna
maid service
laundry
supermarket

and much much more.

Talk to your future neighbours to find out if there are any probs in the condo and if you might be able to live in peace with them.

As we have seen even here, nobody can live in peace if his neighbours don't let him.

I read this whole damn thread (it took me several days to get thru its 43 pages). Poster Lion's input was entertaining. I got a few chuckles, like when refering to his TGF: "She never did anything devious to me and she never asked me for money for relatives or sick water buffalo. She was an orphan so that might be why."

A lot of interesting insight throughout. Dont think I'd want to move here though, I like Thailand too much and would hate to get jaded by it. I think maximum enjoyment and appreciation of the place is best achieved by staying away from it for a few weeks or months at a time. As they say "absence makes the heart grow fonder".

Poster Lion, any updates?

Thai police nab suspect in London bombings

BANGKOK: -- Thai police have arrested an Algerian national wanted in connection with the July 7 London bombings that had killed 52 people, a report said on Saturday.

Atamnia Yachine, 33, was arrested on Wednesday in the Soi Nana entertainment district of Bangkok on charges of possessing 180 fake French and Spanish passports, said The Nation newspaper.

Yachine is believed to have provided terrorists behind the London bombings with fake documents, said Immigration Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Suwat Thamrongsrisakul.

Police were tipped off when an unspecified number of people were intercepted at Bangkok International Airport with 452 fake European passports earlier this month.

Thai authorities have yet to decide whether they will detain Yachine in Bangkok to further investigate his operations, or hand him over to the British government.

Thailand is a well-known hub for producing and selling fake documents.

There is no need to look for a 'sports bar'. Just go where Americans go for American Sports and go where British thugs go if you want to watch fukken Chelsea:(, which, I'm sure, you won't:).

i don't know if this is the right place but there are a few american bars eg
phuket's champs sports bar in soi kepsap, 200 [CodeWord134] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord134) ratuthit rd, beside the blue ocean resort. pattaya's amari also has an american bar if you are into sterile hotels and the losers who frequent them.
mongering hotels like the nana have plenty of american sports on tv. and some bars probably put them on, even though americans in thailand might not be as tribal and as in need of a fight fix as european shit.
the sportsmans bar in pattaya's soi 13 also has some american football but its core market is the lager/laagar louts.
watching it in your room might be the best as, to watch it live, you might be looking at getting up at 5 am, when good citizens like domino are either fucking skanks or working out in other ways. often the bars play the games the next day, allowing you to be a real monday morning quarterback:)

What is wrong with the idea of going to Thailand and teaching English?Well, I think the reason they get so much shit is because most aren't trained or qualified to teach a language, and are doing so because they have run out of money. I meet plenty of English teachers who even I, as a native English speaker, have trouble understanding.

There are many schools that happily neglect to check up on those forged teaching qualification certificates that can be bought on Kao-San.

Am sure there are a few nice folk teaching, I mean Old-Thai-Hand seems like a nice and genuine guy, and who couldn't love Andrew Biggs, but seriously the majority are scum.

Plus, the paedo-motive must also be accounted for.

If you must teach, then get the necessary qualifications, and look for work at one of Thailand's International Schools.

Hi guys,

I will be going to Pattaya next April for the second time in 4 years and having no ties at home (england) would like to get a job out there and work.

I work in IT Support, and while I know there are Internet Cafe's on virtually every corner, I'm after something a little more professional, probably office based.

What I'm really hoping for is some pointers.

I know I will have to learn the language and customs, this goes without saying, however my biggest problem I suspect is that at present I speak no Thai.
Is this likly to exclude me from every job as described or are they likely to give me the opportunity to learn?

Where's the best place to go on the Net for Companies prepared to hire from abroad?
What are the likely locations (Bangkok obviously, but I don't like big cities that much).

I don't want somewhere too far away from the scene, but far enough so its less likely to interfer with my work.

Cheers guys.

Plenty of WiFi in BKK.

Outside of hotels, the most convenient are the KSC Hotspots at every branch of Starbucks. (Every branch in the whole country!).

You buy a scratchcard, get online, then discuss anal while supping your orange mocha frappuccino (perhaps in your orange shirt).

Just Googled for this: http://www.thaiwirelesslan.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=list_pages_categories&cid=1

Oh, and for those of you who like really bad pizza while you surf, that Ronny's NY Pizza place on Suk-Soi-4 has free WiFi. Actually their "Yak" pizza is bearable, but be sure to order by the slice, once the warmth goes, it gets all cardboardy and grim.

MD,

Not sure you are going to find anyone with that moniker.

First, it may not be a good idea to eat what has been chewed on possibly only a few hours before. Perhaps that explains the smell.

While there are a few university students for sale they are of mostly two types. The majority of them are actually bar girls, possibly dependent on money from abroad, trying to get ahead in life and have decided to study at one of the less competitive unis. "Can take the girl out of the bar, but not the bar out of the girl". Others are upcountry gals trying to compete (on a toy level, i.e. mobile phones) with the sophisiticated women of BKK and for that reason become minor wives or in a few instances regularly sell themsleves. The later is very hard to find and if you can they are quite pricey.

Department store gals are more likely to give it up. But they are going to make you a work a bit, unless you look like Brad Pitt. In fact they can become downright "clingy" and hard to get rid of as they may feel as if you are a possession after you have had them.

Otherwise you best bet would be to actually learn about the culture and wow them that way. If you can speak Thai then you automatically open up a lot of doors with all of the legit ones.

Once that happens check out the d****teques and other night spots frequented by the locals.

Happy mongering

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is preparing to declare another "war" against pornography, which some nutters claim is a major cause of rising sexual abuse of youngsters.

The initiative is expected to be declared on Children's Day in early January.

Police and provincial governors nationwide will start cracking down on pornographic materials, VCDs, and the Internet next month, said government spokesman Surapong Suebwongle.

Meanwhile, he said, the government would give financial support to "creative media" with contents promoting morality and good conduct, produced by universities and non-governmental organisations.

Thaksin vowed to block all access to website pornography by year-end, although details on how the government will do so remain fuzzy.

Watana Muangsook, Thai Minister of Social Development and Human Services, told reporters that the prime minister had instructed him to find the means to block access to Internet porn by the end of December.

The minister will hold a meeting on November 30 with various Internet related authorities such as the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Ministry to discuss means of carrying out the prime minister's instructions.

Watana estimated that there are currently 800,000 foreign websites available in Thailand, of which one third carry pornographic images.

Don't worry Trav. I'm not signing in today to give you advice regarding your new girl or your insurance, but I do have a question.

Hey Coma! Maybe you can chime in as well being that you've been around Thailand a good while. I ain't going to ask you about GOLF+whatever...

It was not long ago that someone posted an article on this thread in reference to a show 60 Minutes aired that named Bangkok as a primary destination for people that need major surgery but don't have enough money and/or insurance for the operation in their respective 1st world country.

The example was a guy that needed a heart bypass. It would've cost him around $120,000 USD in "the land of the free, home of the ecetera" and he simply could not afford it. Then he heard about the inexpensive hospitals in Bangkok so he booked an air ticket to the lovely land of smiles and had the operation for a mere $18,000 or some figure near that amount. I didn't go back to re-read the post I'm talking about, anyway...

Here's my question. If a person can afford something as complicated as a heart bypass in Bangkok, then why have insurance at all?

Is it because the hospital won't operate unless they have some sort of proof that you've got money? This is a reasonable assumption.

If this is true, then is it possible to put a specific amount of money into an account and arrange for the hospital to draw upon these funds should any major medical problem befall someone that lives in Thailand?

I'd like to hear some good banter concerning this topic because I really hate (as in greatly detest) burning money by handing it over to an insurance company. I hold the opinion that self-insurance (meaning no insurance) is the best insurance.

Thanks in advance!

The only reason I used to buy medical insurance was in case I had a fucking bad accident and didn't want my family having to spend a fortune trying to repair me, or keeping me in an expensive coma.

Thai medical insurance companies offer such shitty payouts that I can't be bothered to keep my insurance up to date here. They offer something like two million Baht max, whereas when I used to travel back and forth to Londinium I used to take out backpacker insurance which had something like ten million pounds (GBP) of cover. You never know when you'll need an airlift to a hospital and expensive surgery.

If we catch HIV we're not covered, if we fuck our livers with booze we're not covered, if we fuck our lungs with weed we're not covered, and when I one day lose my penis driving my motorbike into CNX's moat I guess I'll just pay to have it sewn back on with my own money. I am sensibly leaving my motorbike in CNX, I know I'd die within seconds if I start drunk-driving around Sukhumvit.

One good tip is to stay close friends with The Traveler, his clean liver is a valuable commodity.

LittleBigMan

There is a bigger picture that what you see!

Coma Boy,

2 million baht of coverage is in relation to the medical cost in Thailand. For the 14,000 US heart bypass (in discussion) that is around 560,00 baht, in relation 2 million baht coverage would be more than enough. I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs so that is not relative to my situation.

Posterlion,
"why have insurance at all" because most of us are not millionaires! $14,000 in relation to 120,000 is a big difference. Now I have seen this story on 60 minutes in the US twice about this farmer in the Midwest. He was going to die if he did not have this operation. Whether he did not have insurance or his insurance would not pay for the operation I am not sure. But he did have enough money to take care of this maybe he even charged it on his credit card. But in the end he was able to live and shell out only 14,000 compare to 120,000 which obviously he did not have! You are correct that if one had enough money to put into an account to pay for medical expenses in Thailand then this would be the individual choice versus getting insurance. But, what if that individual could not create such an account then having insurance would be the next best thing.

Now since I presented the question I should only give more insight to my situation and why I am doing the research on this topic. I work in the aviation industry. Thinking that when I retire at 55, which is next year I was going to draw my retirement and be given medical by my company. My pension was given to the government which if I try to collect at 55, I will be penalized 60% for each year before 65, and my employer provides me with medical insurance as long as I work but once I retire it is gone! So enable for me to retire at the end of next year I will have to live off my 401K and at 59 1/2 I can tap into my IRA's.

In essences I'm screwed, if I shell out the medical premiums (cobra) US, the cost is 400.00 US per month for minimum coverage. A policy such as AIA, can cover me for any major operation and broken bones for approximately 25,000 baht per year. I can take care of the dental and little things myself. From my experience so far with the medical treatment in Thailand (BKK-Pattaya) I can live with this service versus not having any coverage at all!

I want to retire! My job is killing me! so having something is better than nothing. Plus I had the medical in prison so Thailand hospital is a welcome sight to behold. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs I just want to go someplace be happy and go back to the basics in life. I have followed Posterlion story from the beginning and I don't even need that much! But I do admire what he has done as I do others that have made similiar choices.

I'm running myself to the grave right now. So making a decision to retire at 55, and having so much to work with it's not silly for me to obtain a policy such as AIA. I can't afford to dig into that small nest state for the unexpected. To exercise and get back in shape, eat, get massages, and a little mongering is all I need. Being on this board for a few years I just don't see how you guys can get it up day in and day out!

Thanks to The Traveler for his response on Nov-30-, that was a good article. Thanks to Dinghy, But do I need a perscription from a doctor or I can just walk up and buy Atorvastin/Lipitor like if I was to buy viagra?

1-Ball, I'm 20 mg up on you! I take 40mg per day! My insurance coverage right now is 90 tablets for 90 days with a co-payment of 40 US dollars every 3 months. It would be nice if I can get it cheaply in Thailand. So that is a little of my story. Right or wrong I have a dream that if I'm lucky will begin in 12 months.

Thanks,
LBM

I would like to add my 2 cents or 2 baht : Generic medicine made in LOS by Thai pharmaceutical companies are comparable to the real deal. Why should it not be of the same quality. What I bought worked as well as any patented medicine. I bought from a pharmacy that was above board and this guy did know his stuff. ( Pharmacy just inside the entrance to Mike's Mall )

I stocked up on locally made meds at 1/3 of the cost. Instead of paying $25.- for 20 patented pills, I paid 840.- baht for 70. I was not asked for a prescription as would have been the case in most countries. The companies name Silom Medical Company, Bangkok.

As with everything else you pay big bucks for name brands, but there are companies the world over copying these meds for next to nothing. Why is there such a bruhaha about these copies only as we all know they are cutting into the huge 1000 of percents profits made by all the brand name comapnies.

Thousands of people died of Aids in South Africa because because companies that made these so called life saving cocktails did not want to relent on their patents so that the cheaper generics could be made. Only because of profits.

What I am trying to say is that before we spend huge amounts of money on name brands perhaps it would be wiser to check out the generic copies - they work just the same and can save mega bucks.

Treatment for a tooth abscess at Pattaya International Hospital cost me 1000.- baht for x-ray, painkiller and 2 diferrent anti-biotics. The Dr. was killer cute.

Cheers.

LBM - don't know exactly (maybe someone else does) - but aside from norcotics and similar, I haven't seen a need for prescriptions. I seriously doubt that something as "mundane" as a cholesterol control would require one. And most places in Pattaya don't seem to care about a script for kamagra either (but I wonder if the med is actually coming from "store stock" or "personal stock" - seems like the lady where I tend to go always gets it out of her purse)

BTW - IF you want cheap kamagra (100s) and have to make the trip, go to the pharmacy near psah leauh (or whatever the khmer spelling is) in snooky. $5 per pack or 3.50 in 10+ purchases. (under $1 each) cialis (20s) was $14 for 4 (didn't ask about quantity purchase) It's NOT unlawful to posess - just to "sell your stash" - you aren't a pharmacist

Buzz - gee, though the pharmacy sales reps SAY it's different (and I can sell you a bridge if you believe that, too) Truth be known, chemistry is chemistry and the only thing that would get in the way is impurities - the manufacturing process takes care of that. I always buy generic if I can

What! Where ya at Khun Trav? Me ain't heard your two Baht yet.

Coma,

I appreciate your candid response and I'm quite certain I'll be in your boat. No wait! I'm 13 years your senior. You'll be in my boat (if you ain't already). Aside from the HIV and/or the whiskey soaked liver and/or the ganja tarred lungs, insurance might be appropriate if it were (one day) necessary to rebuild a broken or lacerated penis.

One thing is certain... I'm not too keen on hitching a ride with you on your motorbike. You can elaborate on CNX's moat now (if you feel the need to tap the keys) or wait until our next couple of beers.

LittleBigMan,

It's kinda nice to know that you thinks we can always get it up day in and day out. I think it best that you keep thinking same. You'll find out soon enough anyhow, at least I hope so because you deserve a long and happy retirement. Don't we all? :)

And one more thing. I'm not a millionaire. If I were blessed with such good fortune (is that a pun?), I'd not bother to query about insurance at all. ;)

My take on self-insurance (no insurance) is that if you put the $800 or so dollars that you pay per annum for insurance in an account that pays 4% interest you'll have the $14,000 necessary for that bypass operation in a jiffy. Okay. Maybe a little longer, but my point remains valid.

Buzz,

You forgot to mention how much cheaper the generic methamphetamines are in Thailand. I've long forgotten about those profiteering rascallions back in the states. Shame on them! Of course you can copy Mrs Nancy and "Just say no", and that is exactly what I've done for the last seven days. The binge has been broken! I hope Mrs. Nancy will be proud.

Thanks for the dicussion so far, but don't stop now. Keep it coming!!

Insurance or not? That is the question.

Thanks everyone for the help. Based on the information below I'm headed in the right direction that I can pretty much can get what I need. I'm not concern about the real thing or if it is generic as long as it works.

I have been on Lipitor for nearly 5 years, started at 20mg now I'm at 40mg, the doctor tells me don't worry it goes up to 80mg if you need it! Blood test every 5 months to check if it is going to kill me. There are really no long term information when you get older how this medicine is going to affect your body. I personally don't want to find out. I hope when I retire and get my life back that I be in better shape but living in Thailand I will have to stay away from the fried chicken skins.

Thanks fella's and enjoy!

Buzz,

first, many generic medicine doesn't work as well as the brand stuff. Especially some "non brand" medicine from India and China has no effect at all and this is still the best what could happen as other stuff might have some nasty side-effects. Anyway, this can be deadly for those who depend on it to stay alive.

Second, research is very very expensive and who will spend that much money if they won't get a patent which protects their knowledge and investment ?

So if you want to have new medicine for future illness being developed, you got to pay for it. Don't get me wrong, I too think that there is something wrong regarding the pricing of medicine for the poor, but the companies have to make some money and I see nothing wrong with it. If you would have a product that sells quite well you would try to make as much as possible out of it, that's legitimate.

Poster,

I have been busy during the last couple of days, so my reply is a bit delayed. But nice to see that you missed me :)

For me it's a clear YES !

Health insurance is one of the important - if not the most important - insurance of all. Your 800$/per year won't last long if you have an accident and will need some surgery or maybe even want to be treated back home and need a medical flight to the US. Sure, hospitals are quite cheap in LOS compared to Europe or the USA, but it can add up very fast if you stay in a private hospital rather than a public one.

No hospital will accept that account you were asking about unless the specific amount is quite huge. You either need an insurance or have to carry lots of cash or a golden credit card with you. Anyway, suppose you have made such an agreement with the Bumrungrad but have an accident outside of BKK or you are unconscious or the driver of the emergency will/has to bring you to another hospital (guess you won't have an agreement him, will you ?), what will you do then ?
In short, your idea won't work out just for practical reasons. BTW, why not invest that amount and pay the insurance from the interest that can be generate by that investment ?

In my opinion you are playing a very risky game and believe me, one day you will regret that you tried to save a few bucks. Sure, no one of us expects to have a very bad accident or that we might get really sick, but if it really happens it will much better to have some coverage instead of depending on your savings which will run out, sooner or later.

BTW, do you use condoms ? Yes ? Why ?
Maybe because they are your insurance for not contracting HIV ?
Even though it's not very likely that you might have sex with an HIV infected girl and that she will be passed it on to you it is still possible, right ? Just like getting hit by a car when crossing the street or contracting Hepatitis or other nasty things.

Think about it !

Trav - this time I will go nose-to-nose and say that DEPENDING on whether the generic drug is "real" (yes, there are fakes - like Chinese Blue Devils are a notorious copy - sometimes totally "placebo" - of vitamin V) IF the chemistry (the chemical content of the med) is "correct" (as in "lipitor" - the name brand - versus "Atorvastatin" - the chemical equivalent "generic") the effect is identical for the identical dose. That being said, I assume that your responce about generics has more to do with the "counterfeit" versions (the "copies in NAME ONLY") than the generic itself. In the case of the statin drugs, most are not patented because the patents have expired.

In general, those patented products which have been made into "generics" are due for the patent to run out. The "other producers" who later make the drug do so because they no longer have to pay license fees. For those "generics" produced in countries who do subscribe to the drug various "patents" for a drug still "under patent protection", your description is more or less "correct" - BUT - word does get out about those drugs which are totally "bogus" and KNOWLEDGABLE consumers refuse to purchase them.

I think most of the chemists in muang Thai KNOW the source (at the distribution level at least) of their product and would be reluctant to knowingly dispense "bad meds".

But this isn't a generic medications forum

The Traveler
12-05-05, 22:00
Dinghy,

what you say is correct but I just tried to explain why some medicine is quite expensive. Patents will only protect the knowledge and investment of the med companies for a limited period of time, just as you say, and therefore the companies have to try to make as much money out of it as fast as they can. As soon as the medicine isn't protected anymore the receipt can be legally copied by others.

Furthermore there is some "faked" stuff available - usually looking exactly like the original - to cheat the customers. I guess that most pharmacies know about their sources and that mostly the "good" stuff will be sold, but who knows, they might get cheated as well.

All in all, self medication can be extremely dangerous if you don't know what you do. Some people don't know shit and refer only to hear-say but the case in discussion is different, taking that stuff on a daily basis for an extensive period of time should be sufficient to buy it without prescription.

Guys,

You can get a heart bypass surgery in a private, very professional hospital in Finland for about 10.000 euros including everything: http://www.mehilainen.fi/dynamic/eng/index.php?module=LangHeartclinic&func=prices

I guess the reason for the low cost is because private hospitals basically "compete" with public hospitals in Finland. Finns can get the same operation for free in public hospitals, but usually have to wait a while. In private hospitals you get the operation almost immediately, but you have to pay.

The nurses may or may not be as pretty as in a thai hospital, I guess it is a matter of taste... ;)

I just want to emphasize a key point that does not come to the expat resident as quickly as the unquenchable urge to splish splash and splurge in the red-ass-hot-Thai-pussy and that point is this:

After almost two years straining my loins and my backbone (not to mention a fair amount of brains cells), humping and pumping and creaming and screaming, I'm not at all bored yet, no...

The fact of the matter is that I've got a hell a lot better things to do then posts endless mindnumbing posts on ISG. Yeah! that's the ticket!

Till next time, when I have time, I'll post some more. Don't hold your breath la... OK?

Greetings Mongers from Cha Am!

I am looking for the least painful way to make a visa run out of the Cha Am - Hua Hin area. I thought I'd have some options with Myanmar. I've done my search to RTFF and only get the details for Cambodia, (which I did last month because I was at Koh Chang then.)

Is it a long bus ride to Maylasia for me?

Crazy,

I'm assuming that you travel from HuaHin.

Catch the Phuket bound bus from the HuaHin busstation North of the railwaystation at 10.30(?) - DO NOT take any other bus!
Go as far as Ranong. You'll arrive around 6PM.
Next day, go to the border, you have all day to figure out how to cross.
On the second day, after you've been to the border, take a nightbus home, day busses from the South to BKK are very slow. These buses normally don't stop in HuaHin, so make sure the driver and conductor understand that you're going to HuaHin.

Other way is to take a night train to HadYai, get a TukTuk to the busstation (BoKoSo) and take a bus to the border at Sadao, about B25. Cross, enjoy the other side in Malaysia and return with a new one month visa. Buy your return trainticket in advance (in HuaHin).
Time to spend: One night on train, one day to Sadao and back to HY, back in HY in time to catch a night train out.
Taking a train all the way to Butterworth takes longer!

I may be a little late to assist.

Anyway, I think there are buses from Hua Hin to Hatyai.

From Hatyai, you can take the bus to Danuk (which is the border town) or take the minivan (50 Baht). It takes about an hour from Hatyai to the border.

Assuming you walk thru both immigrations (Thai and Malaysian), it will take you about half an hour to get everything done and you can take the minivan back to Hatyai. Whole process won't be more than 3 hours.

Then take a bus back to Hua Hin.

You could of course spend a night in Hatyai too :D

Cheers
Tee Vee

Afternote:
I have confirmed that there are no direct buses from Hatyai to Hua Hin. (only trains). But there are buses which will stop outside Hua Hin and accordlingly, there are also transport services form the oustside of Hua Hin to the city.

IMHO Vientiane is the only way to go. You can take the night train to Udorn (it may go all the way to Non Kai now) arriving early A.M. and a taxi to the Friendship bridge in Non Kai. Get a Lao visa at the bridge, walk across, grab a motorcycle taxi and spend the day exploring the city, then the night train back to BKK if you are in a hurry to get back. If not, then spend a few days in Vientiane relaxing in one of the riverfront guest houses ($10 - $15) a night.

To get a new visa for Thailand, when I am staying in BKK or Pattaya, I always go to Mae Sai, up north, border between Burma and Thiland. It is a four
hours bus ride from Chiang Mai, another four hours to get back. If you take the 7:00 am bus at the bus station close to the train station, in Chiang Mai, you could make the trip in one day. The last bus leaving Mae Sai is at 3:pm.

It is very simple. When you reach Mae Sai bus station take a red pick up truck
7 bhts, leaves you very close to Thai immigration, get to the window to check out of Thailand, as it were, cross the bridge and few yards away on the same
side is the Burma immigration. Hand them $5, if you ask them politely, they
will stamp your passport and you are back at the Thai immigration. Painlessly!

The ride from BKK to Pattaya now costs over 100 bhts! Another tip: the last

I've been trying to get hold of the people who did the thing, but their e-mail address is no longer used.

Can someone help LBM here. Need to have a document notorized in Pattaya.
The notorization must be acceptable in the United State. I know there is a US law firm in Bangkok around the corner from the Landmark Hotel that can translate a english written document into Thai so that the Thai national can sign off on the document and then they notarize the document and it is acceptable in the U.S.

DOES ANYONE THAT LIVE IN PATTAYA AREA THAT MIGHT HAVE SUCH A PLACE TO GET A DOCUMENT NOTARIZED THAT WOULD NOT BE QUESTIONED IN THE U.S.? ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER WOULD BE GREAT!

LBM,

I guess it would be best to have it notarized by the US embassy.
Sure, it's less convinient but can't save you a lot of trouble later on.

Governmental institutions often don't accept any documents that weren't translated and notarized by their embassies. So better be safe than sorry.

Daveyboy,

same advice for you.
I assume you have a valid driver license of your homecountry. Why not request an international one from your embassy ? Does it need to be issued by the UN ?

BTW, you can easily make a Thai driver license. Fare is 500 baht. Don't worry about the theoretical test, if you can't read Thai a few extra baht will be of great help.

Hi, a friend of mine who is kind of overweight (5 feet 10 inches, 280 lbs) saw a program on Dr. 90210 where a U.S. doctor operates on a man who is also over weight for something called hidden penis or buried penis. The doctor stated that it is a very common problem with men who are over weight. What happens is that the penis is buried inside the rolls of fat therefore the penis seems smaller and is actually smaller since half to 1/3 of the penis is inside the man's body. The operation would involve in fixing the penis so it would not be able to hide inside the body.

Since it is a very scary operation, he would like to know if anyone in
Thailand can find a doctor that is experienced in penis surgery I would appreciate any information. We thought that a doctor that does sex change would probably be the person to talk to and do the operation. He is willing to go to Thailand since he believes that since they have done so many sex changes plus he does not want anyone in the U.S. to know that he is getting the operation. Therefore we would appreciate any help from the people that go or lives in Thailand. Thanks again

there is no limit by law, but they might reject to issue a visa if you look like a beggar / hippie. In that case they might ask you to prove that you have sufficient funds to finance your stay, if you can't no visa is issued.

I sold a house while I was in Thailand 3 years ago and had to have quite a few documents notarized. I was initially in Phuket when negotiations started and searched for a valid notary there--to no avail. I eventually had to have my documents notarized at the US Embassy as mentioned below.

Also, notarization, unlike in the USA, is NOT free, if I remember correctly it was about $40 / signature. In my case three separate notarized documents -- $120 / roughly 5000 baht.

Don't know potential services in Pattaya, but beware of acceptability in USA. A couple of different services tried to sell their services to me in Phuket, but they would not have been acceptable. So make sure of the acceptability of the notary service.

I had been thinking about and planning for over a year to go to Thailand in early 2007 for retirement, and I figured that I'd better make a relatively short visit to scope things out. I did go to Bangkok and Pattaya last November, for about 2-1/2 weeks, and I loved it! I met a girl in BKK who stayed with me for most of the time after the first two days, we had a wonderful time, and we have corresponded by e-mail since then. I feel there is a possible LTR there. Yes, I have RTFF and know the risks.

In January this year my job in the US disappeared and to make a long story short I examined my finances and decided to accelerate my retirement to LOS instead of slogging my way through another year of corporate crap. On May 3 I will be on the Thai Air non-stop from JFK to BKK with a non-immigrant O-A long-time retirement visa in my pocket.

BTW I got this visa at the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, DC, and the process went as smooth as silk - it took 2 days between the date I submitted my application and when I picked up the visa at the embassy - but only because I prepared thoroughly and had everything I needed the first time out. The Embassy staff was very nice and very helpful. PM me if you would like a more detailed description.

I will postpone starting my Social Security until early in 2007 for penalty and tax reasons but I have enough put away to give me about 70,000 baht per month until then with a reserve of about 1,000,000 baht, which I plan to keep intact and not touch for living expenses.

My girl has located an apartment in Bangkok, which she is very enthusiastic about, for 7000 baht per month. I have sent some money to her for this purpose. I know the stories, but I feel that the risk/reward ratio is high enough and the amount is small enough that I'm willing to take the risk of losing the money for a real chance at happiness again. Hey, who knows. If this doesn't pan out I'll do what I always planned to do - go it alone!

I believe that we (or I) can easily live in BKK on 70,000 per month and put some away to boot, especially if I'm not mongering. From what I've heard the cost in Chiang Mai would be about 1/2 to 2/3 the cost in BKK but I have no personal experience here. If anyone's interested I'll try to feed back some current information as I find it about COL in BKK and perhaps other areas in LOS.

During this first year I'll make a decision about whether to stay in Thailand for a longer time or maybe go to the Phillipines after a year in LOS. Or maybe even return to the states, but I think I'd rather travel a bit first. A lot depends on how this relationship works out. But if I have half as good a time as I had last November I'll probably stay in Thailand for awhile.

If anyone else has related practical experience I'd love to hear about it.

OTH,

CB speak truth indeed. I see on Soi Silom too. Basic vibes are sometimes present on Sukhumvit as well, but the odds of seeing one on a single recon mission is slim to none on Suk and maybe (2 or 3) to 1 on Silom.

As per variety, you may or may not see a very basic 7 or 8 incher on Suk. If you go to Silom anticipate seeing from 3 to 5 vibes in 1 to 3 random varities. The amazing variety of vibes and toys available from the lowest LoSo US mail order house is a testiment to the advanced deviant nature of the average American compared to that of the average Thai

On the other hand, I can't hold a match large enough to light a candle large enough to illumine the Deviante de Europa :)

Anyway, this post should provide you with a little extra mon jai if nothing more.

You will be surprised at how much money you can spend in BKK; especially, when you don't have much to keep you busy. Most of my retired friends have opted for other locations, i.e., Pattaya, Udorn or Chiang Mai.

warning: proceed with caution.

1) i've been here for two years and two months and i figure your previous rtff's fully validate my claim.

(r)ules (o)f (t)humb based on my experience.

1) a girlfriend is more expensive than you think, but can certainly be well worth it. just be careful or you could find yourself in a retirement budget deficit faster than you can say, "i want to pay your barfine."

2) don't base your retirement destination on your present girlfriend. however, i went against this advice and based my decision to retire in thailand on my then current thai girlfriend. i now advise against it because the odds you'll stay with your first thai girlfriend are not very high.

3) don't become a sex addict. that means you should resist the temptation to fuck from 1 to 10 different girls every day like you did when you were a tourist. it's quite possible that you're first girlfriend will give you the addiction. my 1st didn't give me the disease but the second one did. i was finally able to forget her and move on after seven (expensive) weeks bingeing on sex with sex workers. believe me, you'll find yourself reliving your touristy past aplenty when your in between girlfriends.

4) don't become a sex addict. it can ruin any and all normal sexual experiences with future girlfriends, unless of course you can find a sex worker with half a heart to feed your growing monkey. i am highly experienced with addictions of all shapes and sizes because i am an addict in the most general sense. that basically means that i am capable of becoming addicted to anything. lol :)

5) don't become a yabafreak or a crackhead. i became a meth freak when i was 26 because i shacked up with a girl that simply loved to smoke speed and fuck all the time. it's a highly addictive combination. i killed that monkey and lived the next 15 years abusing the normal vices of sex, alcohol, ganja, and cigarettes only to move to thailand and repeat the same illusion with a sex worker boasting a 14 year resume as follows: i simply love to smoke yaba and fuck all the time, "bpai duay mai?"

6) you can survive on 70,000 baht per month quite easily on the following conditions:

1) you survive the acclimation period
2) you are not devastated by exchange rates or inflation or both.
3) you do not stray far from the path of moderation
4) you do not become a sex junkie, a yabafreak, or a crackhead.

explanatory notes:

1) sex junkies, yabafreaks, and crackheads are typically not on the path of moderation.

2) my new ex got married to a "married guy" in the course of her triumphant escape from my clutches. jep mak mak was experienced by all parties related to the tragedy. there were no mortalities, although tensions where high due to multiple rumors that the 1st wife of my ex girlfriend's new husband had hired motorcycle assassins to, "kill all." oiee luah la shades of private dancer na ja?

3) i harbor no ill will to my last (and 2nd) thai girlfriend. we have remained friends. i even had a quick chat and beer with her today at the café located next to my apartment while the girl most likely to be my next girlfriend dozed naked and beautiful upstairs on my bed. it was much more than satisfaction for me when she had to wipe away the tears she couldn't hold back during our closure chat. som nom na baby! on the other hand it was more than a little jep mak mak for me as i gazed at her new gold and the white garb she wore at her wedding. i wonder why she thought it necessary to show me all that. :)

4)my new ex along with her new husband took repose at a yaba addiction center located in temple that is well known and frequently attended by thailand's burgeoning population of yaba junkies. their visit was a success and both of them are no longer smoking yaba. they are however noticeably fatter. maybe it would be better to say that they are less skinny.

5) the married guys wife still calls me asking if i have any news on the location of her polygamist husband. i always tell her no as i learned long long ago it is always better to admit nothing. i was lying of course in true thai style. i knew and still know the whereabouts and goingson of everything involved in my last breakup. i've become highly adept at sleuthing in the last year. it's really not difficult and don't believe the private eye bullshit that private eyes are not people that have access to public information. that is pure absolute unadulterated bullshit because pi's are exactly what they claim they are not, "people with access to public information." i sent a trusted bargirl to the police with my ex's id number and she came back to me the next day with everything from's mother's maiden name since changed to this or that to the changwat, amphoe, tumbon, and thanon of the house my ex grew up in.

6.a) another typical episode of my life has concluded and i'm still defiant. the way i see it, my life will be like this to the bitter or sweet or bittersweet end. i don't see any reason for my to try to change anything at all. and besides, how the hell can i change something that is unchangeable due to the fact that my addictive nature in hardwired inside my dna? i discovered this simple and wondrous argument supporting my lack of will and effort to change my life during a "gay pride parade", that i witnessed by sheer chance some years ago. it's simple, succinct, and infallible. i can't change the way that god made me and that includes the way he decided to program my dna. not guilty!

6.b) this argument also works if you are an atheist and worship the darwin deity instead of the true god. i guess it does and does not depend on how you look at things. it'll be fun talking to aristotle one day when i meet my end. "hey mr. a. guess what! an a actually can be a b. but that is not going to be today. i'm still alive. i'm still free.

7) and as for my yaba addiction... i've been yaba free for 10 days now. i quit cold turkey by the way. i have the gene of "grit and gumption" in combination with my addiction gene. i figure that this might work to my advantage in the continuous struggle against "retirement insolvency", because it's almost logical to conclude that the imperfections of my dna programming should lead to a shorter than average life span. hey! maybe i can spend more and save less and get away with it anyway... cool man! i think i'll head out and grab some beers and a couple of girls and go home and have some more riotous sex! gang gang gang gang gang...

8) on the other hand, maybe it would be better to stay home. after all, there's more than a couple of folks on my dad's side of the family that are past the age of 100 already. oh well...

nada es perfecto y todos es un sueno

And them thar Thais copy gang luei na! :)

I was trying to allude to the possibility of relocating away from Bangkok in my reference to surviving the acclimation period because most people can speak Thai at least well enough to navigate throughout the country with minimal effort after successful navigation though this first and possibly most important stage of "livin' in LOS".

Poster Lion is correct. Don't base your retirement in Thailand on a woman. That is a set-up for failure. Take your time, find a good Thai woman and you will never regret the move. Find the wrong one and you will regret it until the day you die (probably sooner than you expected).

Poster Lion, great report, recitation, from one who has lived, and survived, the demons.

From reading many of the long term residents comments (here and elsewhere) most seem to go to LOS because it will provide them a higher standard of living than alternatives in the west.

Here in S. California home prices average over $600,000, and any decent one bedroom rental will set you back 700+. Quite a nut to surpass if you are on a retirement budget.

Think of your trips to LOS, I'm a bean counter, and I still spend about twice my budget, unless the debauchery is curtailed, I know my retirement dollars will go fast. Also I can't see waiting for the social security check to come so I can go to Nana for a few days, then hibernating in the room until next month.

Reminds me of a book by Mario Puzo (Godfather fame), seems he was a big gambler and wrote a factual book on his experiences. Part of it spoke of the retirees that get the SS check, rush to the nickle slots, play daily until gone, then sit in the room eating dog food for the rest of the month (I think it was in his book, I lent it to someone who never returned it) (If not there I did read it somewhere, unless my sleep deprived, caffiene addled body from tax season dreamt it).

I agree with the median at $600,000 for a home, but the average apartment rental is $1,300 here in South Orange County. You would be in the getto of LA with gunshots every night to get $700 for an apartment. They have studio condominiums for $445,000. That is less than a one bedroom. Crazy.

If I had a decent job waiting in Bangkok, I would move this week.

Although cost of living here is generally low compared to the West, it is relative. Bangkok, in particular can be almost as expensive as an average American city if you want to live like a Westerner, not a Thai. Certainly it's cheaper than LA or NY. But, some things cost as much, if not more here than they do in North America.

What one finds are a lot of guys who delude themselves into thinking that they are living a comparable lifestyle to the way they lived back home because they are momentarily blinded by the nightlife and fairly cheap and easy pussy. But, once the charm of this wears off as it does for everyone, but the most lost, and lizard-like souls, one suddenly begins to take stock and realizes that home here is a $150/month studio room devoid of all but the basic amenities, dinner, more often than not is noodles or fried rice on the street, and the salary is a paltry $800/month working like a slave as an ESL teacher at some crappy Thai government school. Of course, this is in Bangkok. While cost of living is cheap up-country, the salaries are low; around $350-400/month. And, really...unless you're some stupid geezer, do you really want to live in an Isaan village, eat somtam poo pla-ra and drink Lao Khao for the rest of your life?

Yet, this is the life scenario of many middle-aged Farang who should know better than to come here chasing Thai pussy and expect to do much else than be over-the-hill English teachers. If you're in your 20s or even early 30s, then it's a good way to have some travel and adventure for a short time in your young life. But, the sight of pot-bellied, balding blokes in their 99 baht street ties, carrying book satchels as they trundle off to 'Rongrian Nowhere' to teach little Thai kiddies how to speak English is just plain sad.

I get inumerable PMs from guys all wanting to know how to get a high-paying teaching job here, or any kind of job for that matter. English teaching jobs are 10 a penny and that's why 90% of them pay so badly. More often than not most Farang teachers are treated in a manner not far removed from that of some Dickensian 19th century workhouse. Yet, I meet guys time and again who have left a reasonable job, universal healthcare and an ok life to come here and live in a grotty room, eat MaMa noodles, take non-aircon buses to school and wear cheap clothes all so they can save all their satang to go to Cowboy every week and shag Noi from NongKhai.

With regard to teaching jobs, a lot of guys, out of understandable ignorance think that because they followed the Protestant work ethic and worked their way from the ground up, with only basic education (which these days means a liberal arts BA), that they can come here with all their worldly experience and educate the natives. While I agree that life and workplace experience is far more valuable than a comparable academic education, the bottom line is, it means nothing here.

Thailand has a larger per capita ratio of higher education institutions than all other Asian countries and many Western countries. While the quality at many of these institutions is questionable, within the context of local supply and demand, the Thais pretty well have all the bases covered. So, unless you are posted here with a multi-national company as an accountant, Lawyer or some other business profession, you're not going to get a job here in your chosen field.

There are exceptions, of course and I am one of them. My first job here was as a multi-media manager in a big Thai company, whose name shall remain anonymous because it would easily be recongnized. I have also worked in advertising and many of you have likely seen my ads on the Skytrain. I made reasonable money doing this. However, for most of my time here, I have been a teacher, but not just any run-of-the-mill teacher. I make as much if not more teaching university here than I would in Canada. I have proper academic ranking, good health insurance, and other benefits and have the potential to make all kinds of extra money from university grants, overloads etc. just like I would in North America. For example, my pay-rate for overload teaching is 2,000 baht ($50)/hour, which is more than I would make at many colleges and universities in the States. But, I am able to demand this kind of compensation because I have lots of academic and work qualifications in areas that are in demand here. Diversifaction is the key. At last count, I have taught close to 40 different courses here over the last 10 years. So, I can cover a lot of bases and plug myself into a lot of areas where there is a need.

I once wrote that there was a shortage of accounting teachers in international business programs here. That's true. But, you should also know that there are less than a handful of universities that pay anything approaching a liveable wage for this skill. And, for that you would need at least an MA in accounting to even get a shot at a position paying about the same as an English teacher. At a reasonably good school, paying a still low $1,000+/month, you would need an MBA. The only business programs that pay almost Western salaries are at Webster University in Hua Hin (because it's American) and Chulalongkhorn University, Sasin School of Business because it is aligned with Wharton Business School in the US. But, at Sasin, you need at least a DBA or PhD in business to make the $2500 or more per month base salary that they pay.

The bottom line is, unless you have a highly in-demand skill combined with high academic qualifications, you're not going to get a job that will give you enough money to keep you in the manner to which you have become accustomed back home.

There is only one solution. Come here with lots of money and retire, and do nothing or just teach for something to do. I know guys who have done this. But, they teach things like Law or Micro-economics. So, they still garner a lot of local respect. Come here with lots of money and invest or start a business (not a bar, though...you'll lose your shirt!).

If you're working class, have a very basic education or a degree in something useless like philosophy and have only saved a little money in your life, don't come here to live or you'll end up drinking all-you-can-drink for 150 baht Singha beer at Nana Plaza at 2 in the afternoon wondering how you fucked up and how you're going to make enough money to buy a one-way ticket home so you can get your life, or what's left of it back.

Good post OTH!

Yeah, cost of living over here can easily become very expensive. It's very easy to spend a few thousand dollars per week.

It's all well and good living Thai budget style but you'll still be wanting creature comforts- expensive German kitchen knives, imported wines, 42 inch plasmas, good restaurants, etcetera, and before you know it to maintain the standard of living you have back home you'll find yourself spending more here than you were back home. In a city where there are hot girls on tap staying in for a quiet night is also frustratingly difficult if not impossible.

Of course, street food, quiet nights on the beach, and sharing cheap bottles of 100-Pipers at RCA, will save you plenty of money but you'll still have your expensive gym membership, that hostess bar last Tuesday, your Ducati, UBC bills, etcetera, eating your money faster than you were expecting. Even if you eat som-tam for every meal do you really think you're gonna be wearing a Thai brand of jeans?

Like OTH says unless you really wanna live in Issan sat on a mat in front of a karaoke machine with twenty uncles and endless Lao Khao don't think for a moment that you won't spend a lot of money here.

99% of my friends here are Thai and plenty of them are big spenders. If you wanna live on a budget then for one thing stay away from the cities.

A budget holiday is fun. Living full-time on a budget would suck.

A budget holiday is fun. Living full-time on a budget would suck.

Even a budget holiday sucks! I suppose there comes a time in life when creature comfort does not matter too much anymore, and that a reasonable night's rest and functional bowels are already good to take. However, being in my early 40's I have developed a taste for gracious living, which brings me to spend an increasing amount of money each time I vacation in LOS.

Granted, dining at Angelini, golfing in Hua Hin and flying business class on domestic flights is not essential to a good vacation, but one big attraction in LOS, at least for me, is that this kind of luxury is affordable, especially when drawn from holiday pocket money. Similar spending, even while vacationing, would be prohibitive in the West. Nonetheless, now that I have tried lots of luxury hotels and restaurants, clubs and travel arrangements, I am becoming a wiser spender. I do not mind the spending, but value for money is what I want. I have no illusion that I would be able or willing to maintain that sort of lifestyle if I was a permanent resident.

If ever I settle in Thailand to work, it will be on a posting by a Western company. And even that comes with a few significant issues. For one, Bangkok is not the prime economic hub in Asia. Second, besides gracious living and vibrant nightlife (and the cheap sex, I know), I imagine that life can be quite boring there as an expat.

OTH's wise words are spot on: make a bundle of money, retire early and enjoy your golden years in LOS doing only as much as you need to do to keep you intellectually awake. Do not count on making money there. At most you will be making enough pocket money to contribute to some of the entertainment you will want.

A lot of people do not realize that many of the Thai people (not all) live 6 or 10 to a household. That means they can save a lot more than most of us because there are many more shared resources which a person living by themselves will have to pay a premuim. I remember that air conditioners are very expensive. In Bangkok I need that AC every day whereas in SoCal I only need it for 1 or 2 months per year. Cars have a 600% tax rate in Thailand. Who thought of that brilliant one? Like they said in previous posts, some things like German cutlery and electronics cost more than than in the West. Yes, there is also a huge tax on electronics as well.

I never taught English, but I only have a Bachelors so it would not really earn me enough money to do much of anything in Bangkok. I agree with OTH in that most the cherry jobs are the ones which are staffed from England and the USA. Then you can earn the really high wages and have excellent benefits. However, there are many men in those companies all trying to get the one Vice President job available. In some cases that VP job is only for a 3 year assignment and then they will transfer you to another country like China or Malaysia, etc. If you have that special niche, like OTH, then go for it.

Coma,

I have to agree with most of what's said here - but: "do you really think you're gonna be wearing a Thai brand of jeans?" is something I disagree on! 99%, if not all, of my clothes are Thai made and the quality is better than the same brand's products at home, at 25% of the cost.

I agree. Most of my informal clothes are Thai made and they are great value. I also buy most of my shoes in BKK.

Once a year, I even go to a shop at MBK (I think) that sells designer's clothes (Armani, Ralf Lauren, Alain Delon and the sort) with a quality control failure tag at a 50% discount. The staff carefully surveys each item for me to look for the defect. Often, it is in a totally hidden place, sometimes, not even to be found at all.

Good quality stuff, nice looks, dirt cheap. TIT.

Good post OTH,
Only other option I can think of is the one my friend is lucky enough to be in.
He worked as a Govt employee for 20 years and then quit job at age 45.(Still young enough to enjoy life). He now gets full govt pension having worked 20 years(which by the way is not very much but it is still a steady income)and full health insurance until age 65 (when medicare takes over). He sold everything he owns but uses his brothers address as permanent resident (so have place to mail his monthly pension checks to).
He since moved to China, and having almost no expenses at home, like rent or mortgage, he now lives nicely with his monthly pension money( which like I said is not much by our home standards at $22,000/year US) but still way above average standards of locals. He's now considering moving to Thailand as he needs a change of scenery. (I suspect change of pussy more like it).

But for me, and for the most part, most of us, we will not live this situation as by the time we get a regular pension (no longer having to work) upon retirement we will be too old and too tired to bonk on regular basis and therefore no need to move to LOS.

Either genuine or fake, both less espensive than in USA/UK/EU due to cheaper store labor and rent. Actually a lot of brand name products are made in Thailand for sale overseas through the regular channels, but overstocks end up in steet markets. My ex used to buy me Golden Bear golf attire all the time. Excellent quality and too warm for the tropics, but she just liked the look on me. Also Targus briefcases, Seagate HDs, ect ect. made in LOS for the world market. Of course we all know Thai silk. In the food sector: Thai coconut milk, canned lychees, and rice are exported all over. Local beer is better than US beer any time and has more alc in it, so it's a better value, esp if you buy it at the grocery store. Heineken and Carlsberg is brewed locally, and one Thai brand at least is brewed overseas: Chang aka Carlsberg Elephant.

All the Chinese mass merchandise is available too, at original Chinese prices. Only really lousy quality items are Thai condoms (too small and fragile, but imports are available in pharmacies: Ritex, Lifestyles, Fromms, London ect).

Imported cars have a large luxury tax on them (more and more are assembled or built inland now), but 4x4 pick-ups and SUV have not. You want a truck anyway for those lousy roads and the flooded streets in the rainy season.

HI there

I've just been wondering for the last few days about what it takes for a foreigner to open a beer bar in a place like Pattay or Phuket?
Does anyone have any info on this, or have they tried this themselves before.

Any info would be appreciated.

He said he has an engeneering job, travels around SE Asia for work and has his bar to relax in the time between. (Must be a workoholic). I would prefer not to be stuck to the same bar all year, lol. In addition it must be a pain in the butt to control a bag of flees.

Farang owned bars lose money, and soon appear for sale on Sunbelt-Asia and similar places.

Most Thai owned bars generally do okay.

Coma,

"Farang owned bars lose money (...) Most Thai owned bars generally do okay."

Is that true or is it that farangs want to make Western money doing a Thai thing?

HI there

I've just been wondering for the last few days about what it takes for a foreigner to open a beer bar in a place like Pattay or Phuket?
Does anyone have any info on this, or have they tried this themselves before.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dan
Dan,

even though the Beer Bar business is the dream of many farangs, who believe that this might secure an income as soon as they relocate, it often turns out that they are their best customers in the end.

Many years ago I used to know a guy who was involved in many businesses - even drove races at the Bira Circuit - but was later shot by a "burglar", probably for his envolvement with some Farang and Thai mafia.

I bought a house from him and we got friends as he was my neighbour, he once told me how he had made his starting money.

He had the same idea/dream as you and had purchased a beer bar but soon found out that there was no money in that sort of business. Therefore he tried to sell the bar. Luckily he found several customers who he all showed the bar - calling in friends beforehand so it looked busy - who all signed an according contract, paid the deposit to secure the deal and who all bailed out as soon as they found out that the place was crap.

Due to Thai Law, you will loose any deposit money if you don't fulfill the contract, so be careful.

Most tourists only see the bars during high season and have never seen them during rainy season when business is low. Remember that all prime locations are already gone and that you only can bet if a new place might attract customers later on or not. If you loose this bet you might be stalled.

The bars in Soi 6 are making some good money. A friend of mine used to own one and he told me that some girls have up to 8 customers per day during peak season. You won't make much out of the drinks but the barfines add up. Remember that the bar downstairs and the rooms upstairs must be owned by different companies, otherwise you qualify for a brothel, which is illegal. Also keep in count that you have to bribe police, nothing had changed in this regard.

Opposite to that the normal beer bars collect a barfine for a girl only once, max twice per night at best. Often they don't get customers at all or not even enough to pay the bills just for electricity. Walk around Pattaya during low season to see what I talk about.

My advice : Forget about it.

Bakeries and butchers do quite well, as more and more Europeans retire in LOS and don't adapt to asian food habits, sticking to bread and sausages. Also high-tech seems to be a good business, like nano tech e.g. Many hotels cover all surfaces with nano to protect them and make it easier to clean them (lotus effect). And finally the building industry of course. Pattaya is growing, Jomtien will be the next great development, prices are already increasing fast. Just look around, there are many opportunities outside of the sex/entertainment biz.

Thanks for the info on the beer bar biz. To be honest it was a dream of mine, much like winning the lottery here. I doubt even though I am single, and on good money, I couldn't afford to run a beer bar anyway. Just a pipe dream to get me through tthe day :-)

I was actually talking to someone the other day who told me his mate was thinking of opening a bar in LOS years ago, (1980) and it was going to cost him $40,000 AUD. But once again thailand is corrupt, and that would ultimatly be the major downfall, and profit eater.

Coma,

Take Cheap Charlies on Suk Soi 11 for example. Satit's brother started the place by selling beer out of a cooler on the street. I think at the time he was charging about 5 or 10 baht (this was when the baht was fixed at 25 to $1.00 US). He added a couple of tables and over the years and slowly built his clientele and business into one of the most famous bars in Bangkok.

So, if you want to open a bar it isn't impossible to make money. Just don't put up a lot of initial capital and keep your expectations low to avoid disappointment.

A good Thai friend of mine's family owns a small construction company and says the business is mostly controlled by the Thai mafia. My friend's father was even murdered many years ago, supposedly by the mafia.

Sojourner,

maybe, it might depend on where you offer your services. I know that many foreigners do quite well in the South like Phuket, Krabi and so on. I also have seen many farangs in that biz in Pattaya. I guess as long as you don't compete with them you will be fine. So offering services like insulation and the like might still be a good business.

Anyone know how the photography business works in Thailand? I recently completed an assignment for a major magazine in BKK, and was wondering why they did not use local talent?

OTH's post insightfully sheds light on the realities of life in monger-land. Being at a kind of crossroad, I find myself pondering how far I want to go down that road, and indeed, what my real alternatives are.

A couple questions, if I may:

unless you're some stupid geezer, do you really want to live in an Isaan village, eat somtam poo pla-ra and drink Lao Khao for the rest of your life?

Yet, this is the life scenario of many middle-aged Farang who should know better than to come here chasing Thai pussy and expect to do much else than be over-the-hill English teachers.... the sight of pot-bellied, balding blokes in their 99 baht street ties, carrying book satchels as they trundle off to 'Rongrian Nowhere' to teach little Thai kiddies how to speak English is just plain sad.
Yes, but is it any sadder than my countrymen back in the U.S. who are busy creating broken families, or enduring unhappy marriages, or spending many years alone and/or many evenings watching Internet porn or getting drunk or stoned? I might venture to guess that these are the majority of American men. If we could only solve the problem of the food choices available, I might prefer to be that pathetic middle-aged Farang.

There is only one solution. Come here with lots of money and retire, and do nothing or just teach for something to do.
OK. About how much money is that? Maybe I'm there already (not sure).
