The hygiene practices are not the same as in the west. In some cases, they even use sand as an abrasive stimulus to simulate the effect of a studded condom on the cheap.
The fact is, completely hetero males have about a 1 in 10,000 chance of getting HIV from penile - vaginal sex with a random partner in one encounter, and around 1 in 100 from a known infected partner in one penile vaginal encounter. And those assume all males. Obviously, the odds are considerably worse for unhealthy males, and considerably better for healthy ones with out compromised natural resistance.
Oral - penile is roughly an order of magnitude safer, and Anal - penile is about an order of magnitude more dangerous for the male.
Those are the current working statistics on the subject that the medical profession uses

In any case the study underlying this was done with a large number of uncircumcised men in South Africa, half of whom were then circumcised. After a year the uncircumcised group had a HIV rate 2.5 times that of the circumcised

You didn't say, so I am asking because I don't know: Do the statements you made pertain to those who consistently practice safe sex, or to those who don't use condoms during intercourse?
It would seem to me that the 1 in 10,000 chance of becoming infected with HIV during penile-vaginal intercourse would cover those using a condom. To the best of my memory, someone previously stated 1 in 5,000 for condom users.

Ralph, those were NON condom users. Condom users are 1-2 orders of magnitude safer.
The chance of a healthy NON CONDOM-USING male getting HIV from a single penile-vaginal encounter is around 1 in 100 with a KNOWN INFECTED partner. Female to male HIV infection rates are quite inefficient for healthy males. Male to female HIV transmission is an order of magnitude more efficient. In other words, it's alot safer to be a pitcher than a catcher. The reason gay transmission is much more prevalent is, the male is a catcher, and also, there is much more likely to be broken skin present in anal contact.
If you assume that 1% of the sexually active female populace is infected, that translates to 1 in 10,000 PER ENCOUNTER with a random partner, but it could be as low as 1 in 5000 due to the more sexually active nature of the infected group.

Kicking around statistics can be dangerously misleading. Your number makes the odds seem amazingly remote, but they are not. I beleive the number was 1 in 5000 according to the study I read. BUT this data is PER ACT, so if you go 2 rounds in a ST your odds are cut in half. A horny monger can chop his odds by a factor of 4 or 5 his first day in town!
Second, This is the board for the country with the highest AIDS rate in Asia. Your data assumed a 1% infection rate, but the data from Nobsock (which is consistant with other sources) says the AIDS rate among sexworkes in Cambodia was "DOWN to 29%" due to campaigns encouraging 100% condom use. That's 29 times higher than your number.
Then remember that there are women who are following the 100% condom advisory so if your girl isn't, the odds that she's infected are higher. And if Cambodia is like most places, assume that if she was only going to go bareback once in a while it's not going to be with some foreigner. Not even if she's known him for 2 days and he buys her chocolate! Figure that a woman who's been working for a while (ie she's already of legal age) who goes with a foreigner and does not press STRONGLY for you to use a condom is an exceptionally high risk, even in this deadly pool.
Finally I would just speculate that men on sex vacations are at a slightly greater risk because they are more likely to have longer sessions due to Vitamin V, and large numbers of sessions close in time. This increases the likelyhood of skin irritation and infection. (I also suspect there is a "Critical Mass" of virus needed in the transfer which might make 2 sessions an hour apart more dangerous that 2 on seperate days. But that's just guessing.)

Sojourner, I agree that the stats I cited were for the U.S., NOT for Cambodia, and that they would wildly understate the odds in Cambodia.
I will stand by the 1 in 100 disease transmission estimate PER encounter, between a healthy male and an infected female. The rest are derivations, that vary based on the characteristics of the specific populations. The numbers are the numbers. How one interprets them and uses them is their own business. I only offer them to be informative.
Finally, remember that this is specifically for vaginal 1 on 1 intercourse. Remember the situation last year when the porn industry was shut down for a month due to an AIDS scare? There were 4 confirmed cases of transmission out of something like 40 known encounters between a known infected male and previously healthy females (which was around 1 in 10 rate). But, what was NOT so widely reported was that EVERY one of the 4 transmissions involved unprotected DOUBLE Anal penetration - surely the most dangerous act one could imagine. These acts involved transmission in something like 4 out of 5 actual encounters. Whereas the vaginal-penile encounters between porn stars resulted in 0 transmissions in something like 30 encounters - and in those cases, the Male was the infected partner. I believe that that sub-population of porn actors was rather more similar to sex tourists than any other one where data exists.

We're not far apart in our numbers so long as people understand every time you have sex with a girl is a seperate "encounter", ie most LT include several encounters. So if the odds are 1 in 100 with an infected woman and your odds in a Cambodian brothel are at best 50/50 for infection. 10 pops gives you a little better than 1/20 likelyhood for HIV and a fun filled week or so with 20 pops brings your odds down to just over 1 in 10 of coming home with AIDS according those numbers.
1 in 10,000 sounds remarkably low, but 1 in 10 or 20 doesn't seem like the kind of odds any rational person would knowingly take for a few days of fun.

Don, I did base my original numbers on a 2% transfer rate, but even when I used 1% you still have a 1 in 10 chance of AIDS after 20 pops as I explained in a report just a few posts before yours.
There is a lot of analysis there to backup what I said. You used a 1% as the typical transfer rate for AIDS and 29% as the infection rate in Cambodia in coming to your conclusions. But a 1 in 17 chance of aids after 20 pops is not a very long shot given the consequences nor is it far from the 1 in 10 I gave.
You don't seem to understand the meaning of some of the numbers you site. 345 pops is not the point at which you reach the "100 HIV positive partners required for transmission to occurly". HIV infection can occure on you first encounter with an infected person. 345 is the point at which you apporach something that might be called a virtual certainty of having aids. Using your numbers properly 173 pops is just under a 50/50 chance of having aids and 34 pops is where you reach about a 1 in 10 chance of infection.
However, while the infection rate is 29% among sex workers, that is not the best number to use for us. The rate is going to be much higher among sexworkers willing to go bareback with a random foreigner. First many sexworks are now using condoms all the time as was explained in a post by Nobsock. Those women are not likely to have AIDS. So You know that 29 of 100 women have AIDS. But you also know that say 45 of them use condoms all the time. It is unlikely that any of the regular condom users has AIDS. That means that the 29 women with AIDS come from the group of 55 women who DONT use condoms all the time. Make sense?? In short women who don't use condoms are where almost all of the AIDS risk is concentrated.
Second even women who make occassional expetions to their use are not going to make them for some foreigner they just met. The women who can be talked into have unprotected sex with a foreigner are the least cautious or AIDS aware women in the brothel and therefore the MOST likely to have AIDS.
Because of this I conservatively estimated that the probablity for non-locals is ATLEAST 50% not 29%. In truth it is probably higher than 50% for this and other reasons
The 1% transfer rate specifically refers to female to male infection so the comments about women having a much greater risk are true but do not decrease the numbers above.
I listed several reasons why the transfer rate of AIDS might be higher for sex tourists in my previous post. But even if you accept th 1% transfer rate you still wind up with a 1 in 10 chance of AIDS in 20 pops. Or lower if you buy the theory of increased likelyhood of infection with or that the infection rate for sexworkers crazy enough to bareback a complete stranger from a foreign country is higher than 50%.

I am in no way critical of those who insist on using protection in every encounter. I admire their discipline and their sense of responsibility. The reality, however, is that very few use protection all the time. In those cases, judgment is the only means of protection we have.

I respect your concern for diplomacy, but please put the remarks in context. In December we had a small debate about whether the risk of HIV infection was sustantial from barebacking in Cambodia where aids is at 29% among sex workers. We have people on this site who believe that there is little risk and who actually implied that the concerns about HIV were mearly a scare tactic.
Four posts after the discussion on the HIV risk, we have a series of pictures of a woman who is almost certainly in poor health and shows symptoms that raise many red flags. These pics have been viewed by thousands some of whome showed interest in meeting her.
We can't know what her actual issues were but a descrete PM or overly subtle posting would allow others to undervalue the warning signs in the pics. Biffy is right, HIV is too important to ignor in a situation like this.
BTW I like you handle Mars. I do regret that these posts have brought discomfort, but whether you think we were pointing out the elephant in the room or yelling fire in a crowded theater, you can rest assured we were trying to "Do the right thing".

Here's the info on the HBO show, and the schedule in the US. I haven't seen it, but will be sure to Tivo it when I get back in the US. I just think of all the Lek's I've been with. I think many people just push the AIDS situation under the rug, and try not to think about it.

I saw that there was a new post in photo gallery so I decided to come here and check it out. Hoping to find a new picture, but instead found a discussion about the use of condoms and their affectiveness towards AIDS. No judgement here, but it seems like some of you are very misinformed. Yes, you can have safe sex with a condom, but this is assuming that there are no negative conditions happening at the same time, like a cut, broken condom, etc. Statistically speaking, most mongers who use P4P have probably at one point or another fucked some girl that had an STD while he was wearing a condom and did not catch anything. The fact is, there are risks, so we need to be smart and do whatever we can do to limit the possibilities. If you can't deal with this fact, then you need to rethink your mongering. Having said this, there are several other STDs which are easier to catch than AIDS because they can be transfered on contact. If you DO read the condom box carefully, you will read that it says it is 97-99% effective against pregnancy. It is less effective against many STDs because the chicks juices can still spread all around your genitals, and it's even possible for them to get inside the condom at it's base, especially if it isn't a tight fit.
Last July, there was a large article in the Bangkok Post newspaper talking about foreigners who go to Thailand and then go home with STDs. It was very specific to talk about sex tourists from England and Germany (which are the largest groups to go to Pattaya) They said that their evidence proved the following: 60% of the sex tourists have at least a university education, more than 50% of them go home with an STD, and the #1 reason for this is because they are NOT practicing safe sex. The point here is that having an education doesn't always mean that you are educated, or responsible. (I will say for the record that I am basing these % on my memory, but I would say that they are accurate to within 5-10%)

Sorry, but I must briefly interupt this photo gallery to bring you a special report about the myths and truthes of HIV infection :
Latex condoms are essentially 100% effective against HIV infection when properly used.
The only point of entry for HIV in a circumcised penis is via the urethra which is more protected than any other part of your dick when you use a condom. And note, I am only talking about HIV here, as that is really the only STI that is incurable (unless you let syphillis go too long) - HIV is also the weakest and most fragile STI and does not survive outside it's host. It likes to be injected, which is why anal receptive and vaginal receptive sex are by far the two riskiest exposures. All of the crap out there about cuts and scratches do not apply - try to find one documented case of transmission in that way - you simply can't.
Unless the condom breaks (not a subtle event and you would know if it does), try to enjoy yourselves. 97% covers the chance of breakage and improper use, as well as a general cover-your-ass attitude by our lovely moral-majority-run US government.
And note that I said "Latex" condoms. For optimal safety, bring your own from the states and avoid the ones that you find in China. There is all kinds of documentation out there about how crappy and unsafe Chinese condoms are.

HIV is not easily spread from the female to male even with no condom, but it DOES happen. Don't confuse "not easily" with impossible! These are different terms.
If you use a condom for regular vaginal intercourse and the condom does not fail by breaking, tearing, or slippage, then it basically is 1000% affective against the spread of HIV. Vaginal secretions that might touch the base of your penis or body are not usually very affective at transmission and is not going to happen in the real world. The reasons are many, but basically it's been exposed to air, the secretions that travel from the interior of the vagina to the surface are less likely to carry live virus. There are numerous studies on the topic. This is why there has never been a documented case of someone going down on a girl (oral) catching HIV. For some reason vaginal secretions near the surface of the vagina carry very little, if any virus, assuming she is infected. If there is blood present, well, all bets are off. That being said, I'll bet $50,000 it's happened many times, even though its never been "documented"
My beef is with the many idiots who think they can tell by looking, or, she is so young and innocent looking, or think that males who have straight heterosexual sex never catch HIV. If you monger regularly without a condom for any length of time, this bug will eventually get ya! Count on it! Monger all you want, but use a condom, and when you're "doing it", take a peak down south every now and then to make sure it has not broke!

1. Don't fuck if you have any sore, infection, redness, swelling, etc. on your dick.
2. Check out the girl's pussy likewise for the above and also any discharge. Don't fuck her if she doesn't pass.
3. After the girl washes her pussy, stick a finger all the way in so you can feel her cervix and vaginal walls. Pull out your finger and look at it. It should be clean. Sniff it. It should have little, ideally no, smell.
4. Condom or not, always lube your dick before sex. With lubed sex there's little or no rough friction and much less chance of a skin break where a bug could enter. Also, there was a study a few years ago that Astroglide (a water-based lube) kills HIV (at least in a test tube). That was enough to make me a devotee. It might also provide some protection against other skin-to-skin STDs like genital warts and herpes.
5. If you're circumsized, you also seem to have another level of protection. Google circumcision hiv for more.
If you do all of the above your chances of getting any STD are greatly reduced. About your only risk would be to an asymptomatic urethral infection (gonorrhea, chlamydia, etc), or possibly an early stage syphilis. But chances are any girl with one of those probably will correlate with something unrelated in #2 above.

You may not be in the clear, even if everything that you have written is true. With HIV testing there is a "window period" whereby it takes a minimum of 3 months (some sources say 6) from your LAST encounter before you are able to accurately test for HIV. Reason being that your body takes a certain amount of time to develop HIV-specific antibodies, for which the test is designed to detect. As well, if you were experiencing flu-like symptoms 2 to 4 weeks after your last unprotected sex, you may have been "seroconverting" from being HIV-negative to HIV-positive and all of your testing might still not have picked it up if you took it too early.
So before you go on fucking yourself to death thinking that you are "all clear", you might want to consider the timing of your last exposure to the time that you took your HIV test. It could very well have been performed too soon.
And don't take my word for it. Seek out and ask the advice of a knowlegeable infectious disease doctor, not just the local GUM clinic.
Not that morals are really a big part of this forum, but do you ever think about the fact that, at some point, you WILL become infected with HIV and not know it, and then go on spreading a deadly disease to the destitute women that you somehow convince to have unprotected sex with?

Well, I've been back for a week, and finally found a few minutes to edit some pictures.
I was only in Phnom Penh for 5 days, and one of those I was out of commission.

Regarding Waffles comment about the Chay Hour 2 hotel, I have stayed there many times in the past and they did have a very nice fish bowl selection. The price for FS was never mentioned except one time and that was .2 which included a quick massage. The regular massage was .1 for 2 hours and the second hour was usually used for the extra services. I usually paid the .1 for the message and tipped the girl .1 for her extra services and I never found any that were not happy with that.
Regarding whether they were Cambodian or Vietnamese, each girl wore a colored badge and the Cambodian girls wore blue badges and the Vietnamese girls wore red badges so it was easy to tel where they were from.

I imagine you are talking about the very start of Plau Kampuchea Krom just beside the Phsar Thmei, on the same small block as Pacific Kiss club. I frequent a couple of shops there. One is ABC and the other is next door to the left (can't remember the name). I consider myself very lucky to be alive. There were rumours that I committed suicide put out by the police. It is all done to intimidate your family to send more money. I figured I would be at Prey Saar for 10 years or more as they were synthesizing charges and evidence as time went on. The embassy was in contact with me twice. First while I was held in a PP jail for 3 days with VN thugs and beaten PP kids. The punk from the US embassy was a total dick. Told me curtly that you have violated Cambodia laws and are subject to Cambodia Prison. They accused me of the nebuous term Debauchery. While I was at Prey Saar, I met with 2 empathetic people from the embassy who told me that there has been a pattern of US males getting set up by the Cambodian police over the past 6 months. I spent an hour with them giving them all the details. They have NEVER followed up with me after I got back to the states. I think they have no intention of interfering with the Cambodian government and the NGOs going after US citizens. I spoke with the owner of Le Cirqse after I got out. He told me that the Cambodian police have shaken down every establishment in town saying that I accused the owners of abusing the girls. EVERYTHING was FALSE. I had photos of girls in their 20s only. I was major league set up. It all happened at the Paris Hotel. My cab driver was Chan Thol. I don't know if he was involved. I know that he has always emailed me when I came back. I have not heard from him since I got out in December. The police went to the press with all kinds of stories of outfits that I purchased for girls, multi-camera set ups etc. All false. Only with the help of Chinese national friends, a shitload of money over 100k, and luck did I get out. I have very mixed schizophrenic feelings about cambodia as I had the best times of my life there. And now. My near death experience. It is beyond a movie or a screenplay. very sorry to read your tragic story. i thought the only danger with taking pics was the **** problem. i have been tempted to take pics of girls i get to know who feel ok about it. for me its more of an intimate thing,basically i am a shy person. hope you continue with your book and it makes you a wad of money! all the best and hold your head up for you were the victim not the perp.
I sympathize with you on your ordeal. And I know you got really screwed when it comes to your legal fees, judging by the amount of time your ordeal was.
My questions for you are this. I know you never showed the footage to anyone. Do you think maybe someone like hotel staff could have seen tapes or anything lying around in the room? Was there a dispute with the girl or did she leave on good terms? Did she leave during the day or night? How long after her departure did they come for you?
My fear is that the police are shaking down these girls immediately after they spend time with us. I also wonder was this some sort of planned approach with some 'investigation' or did they come guns ablazing right after speaking with her, right after she left.
No telling what the girls may say to spare themselves and what other details are being divulged. All the more reason to be mindful what these girls see.
