As much as I love this forum one subject always gets to me and that is the subject of overpaying. If you think about cars for a moment, a Ford is a nice enough car right but a Mercedes is better, would you expect to pay more for the Mercedes---of course you would. The same rule applies with girls in my humble opinion. You will always be able to find a girl for 500--1000 baht but if you want a real cutie that speaks good English then in my experience you will have to pay more---unless you are a very good looking 21 year old stud that is.
I plan to be in BKK in November for the first time. Would like to stay in an area with a good variety of tailor shops and pick up a few suits before moving on to Pattaya and Phuket. Any recommendations? Also I have read here that to enjoy herbal relaxation is a huge no-no. I have a hard time believing that such a tourist centered culture would be too harsh with this. Am I wrong?

Read Jackson's recommendation in FAQ. Sukumvit, where everyone stays, is awash with tailor shops. Do NOT break the law in Thailand. Pizzas are legal so every cloud.

Reply: Yes, you are wrong. Say it over two or three times. Get comfy with the concept. I'm not flaming you. Just want you to know that while it may be offered while you are visiting LOS, you might consider the extremely poor reputation that Thai prisons have. And how little they care if you think it is okay. The current Thai Gov't is "Death on Drugs" to coin a phrase. If you don't mind spending a few years in hell hole, please ignore my advice.
The upside is that some police are bribe-able if you have access to a bunch of cash and are willing to leave the country right that moment. So if you ignore my advice and then proceed to get caught, throw lots and lots of money at the cops to let you leave right then. If you get a sentence over eight years, they sometimes will let you spend the remainder of it in a US prison after pulling the first eight in a Thai prison. But not always.
Oh, and the US Consulate is going to be of very very little use. Really miniscule use. Less use than you can probably even imagine at this point in your life experience.

I spent 2 night at POIPET then 2 night BKK. I won USD 2500 at Poipet, then spent it at POSEIDEN for 2 days. I spent 12 hour everyday at there. 7 of us. I need to rest 2 days after came back.

Of course you pay more for a mercedes. It's a better car from the engineering out. However, the real question is, if you knew you could get a mercedes for 50K, would you still pay 60K?
That's the problem with yours and all the overpayers' arguments, you all assume that you have to pay more for pretty, horny, fun in the sack LBFM's: YOU DON'T. If you didn't go in assuming that you were going to pay more, you would pay less. The other thing you'd find is that haggling does not wreck the moment. It adds to it because, if done right, it's a game that both parties enjoy and you end up with more of the girl's respect because she doesn't think you're just some foolish walking ATM; she knows you know what's up and that you will expect good service.
And for those of you who think this is just about saving a couple hundred baht, you're missing the point. First, the goal is to be able to spend the same amount of money but get more out of it. I believe in the 'die broke' philosophy. Would you ever walk into that Mercedes (or Ford) dealership and accept the first price offered? If so, please let me know when you're ready to buy your next car, I've got a deal for you.

I really have to agree with PNG here. While you sometimes might get a slightly better looking girl, bad attitudes and other BS usually get worse with high priced girls. Find a girl you are attracted to, get along with and go from there. My best girls are usually the 500 or 1000 baht girls.

Well, since automobile metaphors seem to be in vogue, here's a few more:
For starters, unlike real automobiles, short-term leasing is a VERY good idea.
And yes, you expect to pay more for a Mercedes-Benz, but the (hidden) service and upkeep costs can kill you. Of course, I would NEVER pay the full sticker price; that's just giving money away. Maybe some people can justify it, but I sure can't.
And for those who prefer to drive exotic and pricey Jaguars or Ferraris and such, you also have to deal with the damn things being in the shop much of the time, along with very high maintenance costs.
As for me, I tend to look for the cheaper yet sporty mainstream models -- attractive and plenty fast, dependable, and economical enough that I can afford two cars. :D

All forms of drugs are strictly illegal in Thailand.
It is very bad karma indeed for a Farang to be on the wrong side of the law in Thailand. Thai jails have a pretty bad reputation, and your embassy won't lift a finger to get you out of trouble (and honestly it is not their job anyway).
And the friendly Thai who sells you some drugs could just as well turn you in for a reward.

On overpaying.
I rarely ever discuss price with TGs, barfine excluded.
Usually they do not ask for it, and if they do I would tell them that I am no cheap charlie and would pay well if they make me happy.
If the lady demands a certain amount, I will pass since it is a sure sign of probable bad attitude.
I perfer LT (ie overnight and morning etc.) but I let the lady decide for herself. If she proceeds to get dressed, then she will be on her way. The uncertainty of how she will perform and whether she will come back to bed after the initial deed and subsequent shower is a large part of the fun.
In my book, an average ST performance is worth 1,000 baht, an outstanding LT performance 2,500 baht.
I never had any trouble in nearly 15 years of mongering in LOS.
I think that most people over-engineer the negotiation. There is not much need to negotiate, and accepting to pay more upfront has no positive impact on the quality of the performance, far from it actually.

I absolutely agree. I also like to add, that it kills the mood, at least for me.
But I disagree that asking for a certain amount is a sure sign of probable bad attitude. They have met many assholes who where cheap charlies after the deed. She learned from those bad experiences that she has to agree on a specific amount beforehand or otherwise will be cheated again. So, if she expects you to be a cheap charlie, she will insist, otherwise just mention it or do not say anything at all.
No need to agree on a certain amount beforehand. You don't know what you will get. Sure, you can agree on BJs and other techniques, but there is still a huge difference between just getting a BJ and a very good BJ because she is into it. Payment should only depend on performance, nothing else.
BTW, I wonder why some of you guys make such a fuss out of it. Within my 20yrs I was asked just a couple of times, in almost 99,99% of the cases the girls do not talk about money at all. Maybe you should work a little bit on your approach, that can ease it up a lot.

I guess you haven't understood the whole process.
Do not believe that the girls enjoy it because they smile or laugh. In LOS a smile can have a lot of reasons.
BTW, no one who sells goods or services of any kind will pay you more respect if you try to pay less. It hurts his/her interests in the trade.

TT-You're full of it. So anyone selling goods will be offended if you don't want to pay their asking price? Like that vendor on Sukhumvit who wanted $90 for a $30 suitcase.
In my short year that I've been going to Thailand, most everything is expected to be bargained for. From hotel rooms, the taxi to Pattaya, girls, small and large purchases made in markets and such. Even stores in the mall will negotiate on some items.
A girl wants as much money as possible. Because some unknowledgeable or don't give a damn people will pay 4000 baht ST, doesn't mean that should be the market value.
As was noted here a few months ago, there are often MANY things you don't discuss with the girls before you take them. Nothing to brag about in my estimation.

There are no set prices for most things in Thailand. Locals know what is a reasonable price for more things than you can imagine.
Look at a Thai travel web site - it is mainly about how much to pay for a hotel room, what a sonthaew costs, admission tickets, etc. Thais do not like to be unaware of the prices.
The tourist or infrequent visitors have no idea of the price of things. Happy to buy a copy polo shirt on Sukhumvit for 400 baht, no knowing that it is 199 at MBK and even lower in Pratunam. Thais feel that if they pay too much, they lose face and are stupid.
Farang tourists do not feel the same way. They compare the price they pay to what they pay at home and the sellers smirk at them behind their backs, laughing all the way to the bank. They feel that we are not smart about money.
Part of the fun in buying things from vendors is negotiating the price through haggling, or just giving them the market price and they will take it eagerly.
Any parrellels to the sex trade are solely the interpretation of the reader.
By and large I'm with Seydlitz on this one. There are times when I've been quoted up front and negotiated (particularly when a couple of times the quote has come from the mamasan on a newbie and been exhorbitant) and particularly in go-gos price will get mentioned. I mostly don't talk prices, don't have arguments over price after the fact, and I don't tend to overpay. If you're going to hang in go-gos you're going to be faced with negotiating more than if you're in beer bars.
As far as how a TG looks at negotiation, I think it depends. A woman who quotes you a going rate price and then deals with negotiation to lower it may well figure she's talking to a cheap charlie and cop an attitude. A woman who quotes a premium price, even if she figures she's worth it, isn't going to be bothered by haggling. Yes, bantering over price can establish that you're not some kind of rube, but there are other ways to do that as well. Not negotiating can also have a negative effect -- the woman can feel, damn, I should have asked for even more. Depends on the situation, the girl, and the numbers involved.
Personally, I'm perfectly in favor in any event of having the woman feel she's "won" the monetary side of things as long as I feel I've won during the time spent together. And as we all know, that's not always the case, but I've had the best luck with the "you be fair to me and I'll be fair to you" approach.

I didn't say that they will be offended, but don't expect them to be happy about it or thinking they will respect you for it.
If a price is mentioned I always do as Joe Zop said "if you aren't KINIAU for me I won't be KINIAU for you as well". End of discussion and it is still up to me. Doesn't mean that I am overpaying. Usual price range 1000 ST and 2000-2500 LT (BKK prices) depending on quality and amount of provided services.
BTW, stick to the issue and do not try to widen it. I guess Jackson won't be happy if we repeat that nonsense.

Yes, haggling is enjoyable. It's like playing poker, a game in which one person tries to impose his/her will on the other players. Certainly a player is most happy when raking a big pot, but there is pleasure in the playing as well because the players are getting to exercise mental facilities. I won't play low-stakes poker because, even though I can rack up a lot of money very easily at such tables, it's too boring when every bet is called because "It's only $2."
You seem to equate someone respecting you with that person being happy. In some cases this is true. For example, when I gave my niece and nephew an X-box for Christmas, I quickly became the 'Best Uncle.' Of course, that lasted only until they opened up the next present, which turned out to be a stack of games for the X-box, and my brother became the new 'Best Uncle.' So, yes, with very immature people the correlation is probably true. I guess I see where you're coming from.
However, respect and happiness are a bit more murky when you deal with mature members of society. I respect most of my clients, but am not happy when they change requirements on me as it costs me money. Likewise, when I run a team, I doubt any member is happy when I tell him/her that he/she will have to rewrite a module. Still, they respect me because they know that I have the knowledge to make that judgement call.
While adult Thais, in general, are fairly immature in their attitudes about long term planning and such, they are quite mature when it comes to understanding the difference between a sucker and a savvy shopper.

No, I do not equate someone respecting me with making that person happy. I believe that the girls respect their customers - if they respect them at all - for their overall behaviour and not just for the ability/will to bargain. I guess they will "respect" a guy which they have fun with more than a sucker who bargains.
Anyway, not bargaining doesn't mean to overpay. As for me, the girls expect me to pay only the going rates or even less, due to the fact that I can talk thai fluently. Usually they believe that someone who can talk thai that fluent must be working in LOS or being a local/expat and therefore knows how much to pay and often being a cheap charlie.

actually, I think it is a common cultural misconception that one can strike a deal with a Thai person in the same way that one does with a Westerner.
Most serious business in Thailand is conducted between Chinese, marginally with Farangs.
In very broad terms, Thai people, at least those we are dealing with in LOS, have a relatively low ability to grasp fully the concept of a contract: "if you do this then I pay you that", especially when the object of the bargain is a service, and when delivery is sometime in the future.
It follows that negotiating upfront with a TG does not buy much in terms of certainty that things are going to happen the way one wants.
Since it is when Thai people are having a good time that they are at their best, it is IMHO much more productive to try and create a context in which the lady I selected will feel comfortable and will enjoy herself.
This being said, if negotiating price and service upfront does make you feel more relaxed, then all the better. But the deal you strike with the lady might not be binding from her point of view. And this even if she has no intention not to be earnest. That is just the way Thai people are.
One final note: all this is a gross generalization, that could be seen as bordering on racial contempt. This is obviously totaly remote from my intention.

Let's let newbies overpay and the rest of us "up to you". We know what that should be, but I, as some of you, would rather not talk baht. Give her what she was worth, within the guidelines of fair, and have fun.

I apologize for my recent lyrical outburst. I downed two Leo's and Three Singha's last night (of the one litre variety). After writing a couple of poems and submitting about twenty of them to various and sundry publications (it's hard work!), I went a little bit mad.
However, today is a new day and all I am now is hung over, my TG is (of course) still sound asleep, and I am about to leave for my Thai classes.
I will revert back to my normal non-opinionated-fact-regurgitating self.

Okay, I've fallen far from the wagon. The lust filled desires I buried are back with a vengeance. Like an old NFL football star and like a great boxer, I don't know when to retire!
I've booked a much needed trip to LOS for early July. I've been to LOS numerous times, as many old timers here remember, but never in the height of the summer months. I was amazed at the airfare! $1100-$1400 is now the going rate! Last November I got a RT. fair for $500 from Honolulu. This is nuts!
Two questions for the board. What will the weather be like in mid July and any pointers on a more decent airfare?

Let me merely say this: that lack of moral corruption thing sure didn't last long, unless you're intending to head to LOS to save a few lost TGs.
Weather will be decent in mid-July, though it'll rain more. Temps generally in the 70s-90s F (20-33 C.) And China Air has RT tickets from Honolulu for around $830, if you can get a seat.
Hysto is back but darn busy and if you can believe it, with the same woman for the past 3 days!?!?!
Shocker. Monday night, will be at Baccara bar upstairs wearing all black and drinking Japanese beer about 9pm. Drop by and say hi and then le'ts move to greener pasturers. I need some variety in this trip as this new girlfriend is hot but getting clingy. Had to go all the way to the airport to get rid of her! Kept thinking I was going to pass her on the expressway coming back, now that would be funny.

The weather in BKK in July will be hot & humid. I was in BKK from May 2~3rd and boy I was drenched in my own sweat. When my t-shirt was dried, salt seems to form. Through out the year, the hot weather in BKK remains the same.
Maybe I sweat a lot.

air asia apparently has only 1 flight per day from kl to bangkok which puts me in this fine city approximately around 4+pm. just nice for the daily traffic jam, which i conclude to take the cab rather than the bus. no hassle from the cabbie in regards to get me “companion for the night” which is the thing i do not want to be bothered with at the very minute i reach this town, so far so good.
opting for the cab rather than the bus (i took the cab which carries the yellow plate), could not recall if i paid any ticket at the stand, but got my slip and off my way to the sukhumvith st. the driver paid for the tolls (enter: 30 bath, exit: 40bath) which made the total ride at around 300 bth by the time i reached at nana (soi 4) junction. paid him the fare and i start to make my rounds.
making mental notes as this is my first time in bangkok, i had to find a place to stay as i did not made any reservation which ended me walking almost a kilometer asking around for prices. so far i concluded that around soi7 (2 star motels) costs like 800 bth average, majestic suite (which is barely a spit away from nana junction) cost roughly around 1.2k and above. decided to take the world inn at soi 7/1 (which apparently eden club located at the same street, plus a 24/7 subway at the corner) as i would not spend that much time in the room anyway.
i managed to look around for vitamin v as i would definitely know that i would need them on daily basis, apparently the prices vary from pharmacies to the next. being picky in selecting the goods before buying them, i need to see them in original boxes in the first place and the well-designed plastic casing for the pills. (as i had a few experiences buying fake “v”, which somewhat gave a placebo affect, hard to tell when there’s a naked fine looking lass less than 2 meters from you: p). i managed to buy them at the pharmacy near the nana exit (next to the baggage store) as i looked around as they sell them at a decent price of 1.4k per box (4 pills). made them cut it there and then, i managed to grab a beer at the corner. there was a few moderate looking girls there, but there was nothing much of an interest to me for the time being. i noticed there was a blonde (russian?) that hangs out there (plus, looking at me and keep on smiling at me) which i don’t have the slightest interest in her (or him? could not tell from where i sat). in short, “rat’s ass”. plus, she got big eyes that scares me even from far, which would terrify me if she was anywhere near me (>”<).

doing a bit of ride around on bts (nice deal for the 100 bth unlimited daily pass), visiting areas of patpong (expensive goods and the door men and ladies were too pushy) and as reported by other members on the board, yes, it’s true the girls were on the upper scale in looks, but i didn’t bother to go in as i recall from previous fr that this place is entirely a total rip-off.
made my way back and it’s close to 1 a.m. the number of girls starts to grow by the minute. i managed to talk to one cutie, (no idea how this scale system work, but i’ll give her a 7) and she gave the gfe throughout my sitting. (aaah, the power of the king’s note in the wallet, does wonders in this land).

When I was walking past Kings Corner Go Go, I looked in a spotted a nice looking girl dancing on the stage. At that time, there were only a few girls on stage dancing. She told me she had only been working in the bar for a month. She started out serving drinks and the manager thought she looked good enough to dance. She said she was very shy at first, but now she is used to it, and she said that now she likes it.

Reagrding this ladyboy issue...I think that is the biggest problem I have with Thailand...The ladyboys look too convincing, yes? okay, during my week stay in bkk, had 3 nice girls to report on.

500K are more than sufficient, 100-300k will be excepted as well plus a few baht of gold. During a thai marriage ceremony a member of the family (usually an uncle or aunt) will let all the guests know how much dowry you pay. So a higher amount is usually to show off besides the financial interests of the parents. A smart guy would talk to the parents beforehand, agree on a smaller amount (about 50-200k), deposits a higher amount in a savings book to "keep face" for the guests and withdraws the money after marriage.

My sentiments exactly. Sukhumvit is poor quality whilst Singapore has a very good selection. I had 5 in a week in Singapore of which 2 were really upper quartile in terms of looks and GFE to boot. As a bonus, you get it all night with many shots at goal. BKK was a quite a disappointment after that. In terms of $/hour, Singapore seems like a better deal ? Actually, JD, you might have a point about the quality ( or lack of ) of the Sukhumvit girls Vs those that work in Singapore. On my last visit to both places, it did seem that it's harder to find " stunner" in BKK nowadays. you cannot compare the Singapore scene with the Sukhumvit area. Thai Girls who made it to Singapore have already made an extraordinary development, they must be quite strong, speak English quite well, normally they are long time in the business.

A Long Weekend in BKK
Had a weekend to kill in BKK so decided I would do some shortime hotel research and bag a host of birds in the process. Here is what happened.

The only thing going for Singapore over Bangkok IMHO is the variety. When I was at the The Ipanema bar in the Orchard Towers two weeks ago they had Thais, Fillipinas. Indonesians, a couple of Singaporean Indians, Chinese, a few bottle blonde Fillintheblankistanis and some other indertinable birds from SEA (Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laos etc).
Other than that the economics don't stack up. For example: 1 beer in Thailand will cost you no more that USD3.00, in Singapore the cost can be up to USD8.00+. Now look at the LT fun package price: Singapore USD150 minimum whilst in Thailand you are getting top shelf for USD100 (including bar fine from "upmarket" Soi 33 establishments). Add on the hotel rates and it is no contest (all this and chew gum at the same time - for those of you with the ability!).
I know some of the girls that work in Singapore (from my frequent travels to Thailand and Indonesia). They all have good hearts but they have been around the block a few times Whilst it is not likely you will find many virgins in Sukomvit Road (apart from me of course!), the discerning monger can easily find a ride with low mileage on the clock.
If the choice is between Thailand and Singapore and you are after variety and have deep pockets then Singapore is the go. If you want a good mix of quality, quantity, value and a better than even chance of a GFE then Thailand is the answer.
Personally, for ball draining fun that is not too hard on the wallet or the heart, give me Indonesia any day.

I'm married to a Thai. Parents asked for 100,000baht dowry and nothing else. I paid it, on the understanding they would never get a penny more, no monthly payments, no sick buffalo's, not a penny more. They accepted. They threw a huge party up country, the whole village, monks everywhere, stacks of booze etc, and it was paid for by the father in-law (no doubt from the dowry i had just given him !!)
Her parents are poor, Isaan farm people. I expected to hand the dowry over discreetly to the father at some point, but oh no, there would be no face gain from this, so mid way through the ceremony the monk held out his hand, i looked at the wife (to be) and she said to give the dowry, i did and they laid it out in a huge circle for all to see. The entire wedding ceremony was about money, nothing else, people were smiling and happy, not for us, but for the money. Wierd feeling.
Anyway, 4.5 yrs later, still together and not paid a penny more to anyone, of course when we visit her home we take a few boxes of beer, and bottles of whiskey and make sure everyone gets out for dinner at least once, but i'm talking an extra $200 a year ! The first 18mths were bumpy, we gave each other a lot of shit, and went through what i now know to be a typical relationship with a TG, but now, having worked hard at it together, things are great. The statement "you can take the girl out of the bar, but you can't take the bar out of the girl" in my personal case, complete rubbish, but i have seen many freinds who have not been as lucky. I know far more guys from failed marriages with TG's than i do with.
Some of the hi-so's here in thailand quite openly comment on dowrys to the press, in those circles less than 1M baht would be an insult.
The way i looked at the dowry was this, how much would it cost me to get married in the UK ? probably 10,000 GBP, so i got a bargain.

In any event, I've never really understood why guys get so amped up over the whole dowry thing -- most American women expect a ring that costs far more than a Thai dowry does.
And, hmm, FD: do you need to be discreet while you're being discrete :D or is the main idea simply that you'd darn well better not get frequently close to someone else in particular?

I do not know your friends so I can't comment on them but dowry is still the norm in thailand. I myself was married (traditional) twice and lots of my friends (thai and farang) still are. As Meaty already pointed out, even in rich families the dowry is a must. A friend of mine (thai chinese) payed just for the wedding party over 1M baht. Guess how much for dowry ? Why should he do so if it is not common practice in thailand ? He is a thai and should know what he does.

nope, the dowry will not be returned to the couple, the parents keep it. They might pay for the wedding party with that money but usually the husband has to pay for it as well. Also every single guest will donate/hand over some money to the bride/husband which they can keep.

Well I think the Singapore bound Thai girls are probably better travelled but I would disagree that they fit the Asian customer's image of a taller lighter skinned girls. I did find all types there and they do pitch at the farang market that is prevalent in OT.
However, I am yet to try HK and Macao so I need to do that before I can make a 3 way comparison. The friendliness of Thai girls makes it a really good experience - I guess this is less common in HK and Macao ? I am probably veering off topic, but I can perhaps conclude by saying that Sukhumvit girls are no match for their sisters who go to Singapore.

Furthermore it is not necessary, because you confirm what I wrote before: Most parents return the dowry to the couples nowadays, as a kind of start-up help. I would even go one step further: it is part of the dowry negotiations what to do with it, and normally it will be agreed upon returning the dowry to the couple. This is really negotiable.
And you are completely right: Especially due to the fact that we have one and the same opinion it makes no sense to start any discussion about that issue.

I think it's time we take a trip together and do some scientific "sampling"s to conclude as to which country has the " top " quality girls. I know Asia well and frequently visit and go out with local asian friends in Taiwan, HK, China, Singapore and Thailand. In comparing only the " top drawers" bracket in those countries, prices not withstanding ( and this is a very important point because the standard of living varies wildly in Asia. Wheras Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong are either considered first world or somewhat close to first world, Thailand, Indonesia, the Phillipines are considered 3rd world countries. A similar flat which costs upwards of US 2 millions in HK can be had for US 150,000 in Bangkok, for exemple. ), I still think HK has the best ( and the most expensive ) in the " top drawer " bracket. But if you take price into consideration, BKK wins hands down !! ( PnG, are you with me ? ) Macau, Singapore and China are all somewhere in between. Now, of course, this opens a can of worms as to what one considers " top drawer " P4P girls. I like to hear from y'all fellow "mongerers" what you consider " up market " girls and what you would pay for them ?

Some comments concerning dowry in Thailand:
For a BG: Bath 20 k
For a peasant girl from the boondocks: Bath 30 to 50 k
For a middle-class girl: Bath 100 to 200 k
For an upper middle-class girl: Bath 200 k and more
For an upper-class girl: Bath 1 million
Please note that these figures apply to Thai bridegrooms coming from the same class as the girl. So you mongers, coming from a much higher class, may obviously be expected to pay more.
I know that some BGs tell their prospective farang husbands that one million bath is a standard dowry. This is certainly not true.
The rates of course may vary. I would say: give at least double or triple the amounts listed above if you're a rich farang - and every farang who can afford to buy a flight ticket to LOS is a rich farang in Thai standards.
Your lady is expected to support her parents and other family members.
Some parents may return a portion to the bridegroom, although I think in the case of a farang bridegroom this is rarely done.
The dowry is a Thai custom. The parents spent a lot of sweat and money raising their daughter, paying for her doctor's bills and getting ever deeper in debt in order to keep up with such and other bills. When you take her away from them, they expect something in return.
And even if they expect to receive a certain fixed amount of money every month (let's say 9 or 10 thousand bath) on top of the dowry - or some other support at irregular intervals, whenever the occasion or emergency arises - give it to them with a happy heart.
If you don't understand that by marrying a Thai girl you also marry her mother, dad, brothers, sisters, grandma, etc. - don't marry a TG. Go for a farang lady back home!
By the way, there will be lots of emergencies befalling your wife's family that by the grace of God won't befall you in the comfort of your Western lifestyle. So any kind of support is appreciated and it's only fair to give it to them.
Remember one thing: if your TG weren't absolutely desperate, she would not even consider marrying you! Having said this, I surely know that some such relationships can grow into happy partnerships, but always keep in mind that it is tragedy that drove her into your arms, not the fact that you're a cute lover boy from a faraway country.
And your wife (their daughter) will then not lose face for having married a cheap charlie without family sense. Remember there is no social security that takes care of the old, the sick, the demented, the cripples in Thailand. And once you marry a Thai lady, YOU are part of the family. And you are the rich part of the family and as such it is your duty (and it should be your pleasure) to support the poor part of your family. If you can't dig it, don't marry a TG.
Of course, lots of Thais are greedy and lazy bums and will ask a dumb farang family member for money to pay for gambling debts or anything from a new DVD player to cousin's new pick-up truck.
Lots of other Thais, however, are decent hard-working, poverty-stricken people who deserve to be helped once you are part of the family.
It's up to you to know who is who. Who is real and who is a fake. And who you team up with always also reflects your own character or at least whether or not you have sound judgment.
Some guys have the weird idea that paying dowry means "buying" a girl from their parents. If you don't like the idea of paying dowry, don't marry a TG. Try your luck in India where the bride's parents have to pay dowry to the bridegroom (although I'm not 100% sure if that also applies if the bridegroom is a westerner).

If one is after top quality P4P, Shanghai (IMHO) is the place to go.
Prices can be outrageous so local knowledge is vital. PRC women leave the rest for dead in the sack. A slim, tall, youngish girl, with a sense of style is also fabulous eye candy and can travel really well if desired.
In 2nd place is Kuala Lumpur, Malay girls rock in bed and look sensational with their dark, sultry looks. Good English too!!!
Singapore does attract some nice girls but the inflated prices are too much to swallow plus the club/pub scene is limited.
Having said that, BKK still has some real gems and the lifestyle here is supreme compared to PRC.
Indonesia/Phillipines have great performers but are a little less attractive in general and the environment is not the best.
My experience is limited in Japan but, prices aside, it could be Eldorado for beautiful P4P.
HK - why bother, too many hassles with P4P population seeming to always be in a state of flux. Lots of cute hard up maids looking to add to their income can be fun though.
Only my opinion guys, but over 30 years mongering in Asia, many changes over the years of course and many still to come I expect.

So I wonder why some people work their asses off at home, save their money, buy a costly flight ticket to Thailand, fly halfway around the world, just to live in a dump, hang around decrepit Nana Plaza and end up paying 2400 bath to get an ST pop session with some jerky go go hooker in a dumpy ST hotel.
In my country (I use this as an example, but I think it applies to most of Western Europe, the US, Japan and other first-world countries), a lady of the night
- Has to do about 35 ST sessions to earn a monthly salesgirl's salary
In LOS, tourists pay 1500 bath for an ST which is half of a salesgirl's monthly salary!!! This means that in LWWS (Land that Welcomes the Worlds's Suckers) a lady of the night
- Has to do 2 ST sessions to earn a monthly salesgirl's salary
Do you really think a Thai ho is so good that you should pay her half a month's salary (or more!) for an ST? Well, I don't.
I don't want to create the impression that I'm Mr. Know-it-All. As a newbie I paid 3000 and 3700 bath for such things.
Anyway, all this seems to show quite clearly that we are all being taken for giant suckers in LOR (Land of Rackets), because for some odd reason our brains seem to stop functioning the moment we get off the plane in BKK.
Don't tell me it's still a bargain compared to home. It ain't if you got your math straight.
No matter how you approach the subject, you are overpaying fantastically if you pay even 1000 for an ST.
Or look at it this way:
- In rich countries, a haircut costs 40 dollars and an ST 80 dollars.
- In Thailand, a haircut costs 120 bath and an ST 1000-1500 for those who believe in that price fantasy (when enough people believe in a fantasy it becomes a collective reality for them even though others who don't share that fantasy live an entirely different reality).
So do you think it is in any way normal that in our homelands an ST costs twice as much as a haircut, but in LOS it should cost 8 to 13 times the cost of a haircut? Of course not, but they make you believe it cos you wanna believe it.
Can anyone please explain to me why a ho in Thailand should earn 8 to 13 times as much as a hairdresser, when in other countries she gets only twice as much?
If things were in any normal relation in LOS, an ST would cost 250 bath.
Then, and only then would it be worth to make this costly trip to LOS and enjoy. If you pay even 500, you are being taken for a giant ride. But once milliions of suckers paid those prices cause they haven't good their math and their brains straight, its kinda difficult to go back to normal, isn't it?
I don't blame the Thais for this situation. No matter how greedy they are, the mongers are the ones who created this situation.
I don't exclude myself cause I lose my brains too, when I sit down in some bar and some upcountry girl from Buri Ram makes me feel like a teenager in love for the first time.
And I give her 1500 for LT because it was heaven on earth.
But still, it's way too much, guys. You are calculating from back home prices and you should calculate from what a person earns in Thailand. I think we are all mental cases anyway.

Ah yes, the Shanghainese girls. I do agree they are the best. You can find them in HK in some higher end karaoke bars or through private contacts. They are very expensive, but you are right, thye have beauty, class, intelligence. Be careful if you are not strong of heart, you can easily fall in love with one of them, then it really gets expensive! Must go to Shanghai soon. Wonder if they choose to work close to home ( a lot of girls choose to work in far away places so people at home will not know about what they do). I heard a lot of p4p girls in Shanghai are not really Shanghainese but from other northern cities like Dalian. Many Shanghainese girls will travel to HK to work to avoid being recognized. I also have heard you can find PRC girls (but no Shanghainese girls) now in BKK. They usually hang out in discos.

You have some very good/accurate points that you made, but there is also a sense of resentment or distaste in a farang marrying a TG.
To add to your post, it really depends on where the girl is coming from and what's her style of upbringing. BG's are usually a source of income for the family, so when you take them out of the bar, there will be a loss of income for the family. Therefore, they will try to get as much $ as they can out of the farang, especially if he's inexperienced about many things in Thailand. In addition, it would be VERY NORMAL in this situation for your future bride to think of her family first(as she always will) and also try to get you to pay as much as possible. She may love you, but it's definitely a "face" issue for her as well. She's a prostitute and looked down upon, but if she can get a huge dowry, she can "save face" in her eyes and her family's. Don't forget, many BG's are actually marrying farang just for the money. So, not only will they try to get you to pay a huge dowry, but they'll be looking for $$$ in a million other ways after they marry, and eventualy when they divorce.
Not all BGs are like this. Not all stories have sad endings. My advice would be not to marry a BG, or at least one that hasn't worked there for more than a month (if her English is good, she's got a lot of experience) Also, I would avoid any BG you meet in Pattaya because this place is the most known for all of the scams.
Mid class families would probably keep most or part of it, and then blow most or part of it on a party. (I hate to discriminate, but usually only Chinese Thais save their money for the future). You will be expected to help the family in the future.
Upper class families will usually ONLY marry upper class. The dowry will be displayed so the family gains face, but usually it is given back or used to buy the happy couple a house, etc. With Farang, perhaps they might keep it, but they certainly don't need it. You will not be asked to give any money in the future if you marry upper class, but I imagine that your wife would be high maintainence.
Perhaps the thing that sucks the most, and there is no way of getting around this, is that farang are usually viewed as rich. Certainly richer than most Thais. Even if you have a low paying salary in your home country, you may be viewed as an ATM. So you WILL be asked to pay for a lot of things for the family. You can refuse. Definitely, before you get married, make it clear what you will and will not pay for. But, still expect to be asked. Yes, it's true she might have a large family with several brothers, but they either won't be asked to help because you're "rich", they won't be able to give very much $, or they won't give anything. It sucks! They also might be taking YOUR $ and using it not to work and just drink.
If you don't have $ in Thailand and you get sick, you die. If someone in your wife's family dies because you didn't give $, you're screwed. BTW, you'll also be asked to pay a lot of $ for the funeral (the more money, the bigger everything is, the more face for the family ( a waste of good money))
My advice, offer to pay the same as any other family member pays, perhaps more if you really are rich. It's fair, and they know it.
You really need to know the person you are going to marry, before you get married. If you've only spent a few vacations together, you don't know shit about anything and you're going to get screwed. That's why you hear all of the horror stories.
One more piece of advice, if you make a BG your GF, DO NOT give her an allowance every month, especially if she's asking for it. If you do or if she does, then she's still working and you're setting yourself up for future problems. If you want to help her family and you are living together, 1000-2000 goes a long way in the country, and believe me, it's a hell of a lot more than her siblings are giving. When I hear about guys sending 20,000+ ea month from abroad I just laugh, and so do the girls, all the way to the bank. BTW, they're still fucking other guys like us in the forum. Too many times I've been fucking a BG when her BF calls, sometimes for free.
Ask a BG what her dream is and you will probably hear that she wants to buy some land, back home, make a house there (because she wants to live back home) and open up a 7-11 type of store so she can just sit back, be lazy, and let the money flow in. So, where is the farang in this plan?

The figures concerning dowry are from Bernie Trink (Nite Owl). Written a few years ago, but still valid, I think. I consider him a very reliable source.
Once I had these figures, I always kept them with me in my little black book, and on the each occasion I talked with TGs or male Thais about the marriage subject (I speak fluent Thai), I was able to test the validity of the figures.
You know, Thais will not honestly tell you what the going rate of anything is. But when YOU tell THEM the going prices, you find out by their reaction if you are on target. So it is of great help to know these figures (as it is of great help to know the real prices of any service or product in LOS).
When I got married to a TG from Sisaket, I said I'll give your parents three times the going rate, i.e I gave them about 125'000 bath. After all, in Sisaket - the poorest province - the average annual income is 15'000 bath which makes 125 thousand a ten years salary. They were all too happy.
Still, sometimes she would tell stories about this and that friend or relative of hers who got married and the farang paid 1 million bath. I said, o.k., up to him, he's either very rich or very stupid or very desperate. Or very "djai-dee" (good-hearted). Beware, cos most of the time when they say a farang is "djai-dee", they really mean he's very generous, i.e. a sucker.
Her niece got married to an expat. He paid a million. But she was a virgin, barely legal age and pretty as hell. When I married my wife, she was 30 years old, chubby, not pretty and had an 8-year old boy plus she was still married to a guy who wanted back the dowry he paid to her parents (35'000 batrh) before he'd sign the divorce papers. So I guess such details also have a bearing on the amount of dowry one would be willing to pay.
I divorced my wife 3 years ago cause I felt too restricted by her constant jealousy coupled with dwindling attitude as soon as she had me in her cage, but we're still friends and on good terms, and it really helps to have such people as information sources because she levels with me.
Generally, however, I find Thais quite unreliable information sources. Either they don't know, or they bullshit you for a variety of reasons (either just for fun, or to get more money out of you, or in order not to lose face having to admit they don't know.)
The info in my post is from my own experience and research. But the figures on top are from Trink. I included them ibecause to the best of my knowledge and research based on years of experience in LOS I agree with him. But his figures have really helped me a lot, sos I thought I'd share them with others.

I normally would not have considered myself to be racist, but with all the recent goings on I have been pushed to my limit on more ocassions than I would like. There are very good reasons why I feel this frustration, but as you say, it is not the topic of this board. I did however gain access (if only for a few minutes) to a message board supporting Al-qaida and was able to vent my feelings there, so that was good. I will drop the subject now, and I thank you all for your understanding. I hope Paul Johnson is in peace right now, and may God bless all the innocent Arabs and Westerners who are being senselessly killed by this war.

The idea of a attack in Pattaya or Bangkok is real and something we should all keep in the back of our minds. It would be very easy at night to place a small boat under the Marine Disco/ Dollhouse area of Walking Street in Pattaya loaded with a homemade bomb. And the whole area would come down, will all the people inside. Thailand has very little in the way of protection and tourist areas are always a great target.
As for Bangkok, if you used a truck or car to form a fire bomb at the entrance of Nana Entertainment Plaza, you would trapped the people inside. Just take a look at NEP it is a fire death trap. I'm sure their must be a back way out but do you really think the Thai workers would stop and show you when the whole place was in flames? They would leave you in a heartbeat and just think about themselves.
Terrorist attacks are a risk in Thailand just like many other places and worth thinking about. I believe it is only a matter of time before the problems in the South move into the heart of Thailand.
About the only good thing that could come out of this is tourism in Thailand would be dead and the prices would stay way down but, the price would be to high to pay.

Regarding terrorist attacks, I am a great believer in fate, what is going to happen will happpen and boarding yourself up in your home is not really the answer. I am a Brit and love Yanks but you seem to forget that for years they funded the IRA when they were blowing up innocent civilians. I hope no Islamic Fundamentalists read this site because now they know the best place to plant a bomb, yes a car bomb at the entrance to Nana Plaza would cause carnage.

I don’t like seeing politics on this forum, but there has been too much verbal abuse aimed at the entire Arab race, the great majority of who are peaceful and friendly people, so as a Westerner living and working in the Middle East, I want to have my say.
I personally wouldn’t put LOS high on the terrorism danger list, because Thailand hasn't, as far as I know, played any role in Afghanistan or Iraq, and it is not an Islamic country - (although nowhere can really be considered safe anymore, everyone is at risk to some extent).
According to the general thinking amongst moderates in the Middle East, the extremists attacked Spain due to their involvement in Iraq, and Bali to “punish” Australia for it’s involvement in Iraq, and Indonesia for “non-Islamic” tourism in an Islamic country. Similarly UK is a high potential target for its heavy involvement in Iraq.
The great America remains at the biggest risk of attack, not just for Iraq and Afghanistan, but principally for its unyielding and total support of Israel’s barbaric treatment of Palestinians and occupation of their land. This is the Arab perspective, and one I sympathise with to some degree.
This Gentlemen, is the root of the problem, and the core rationale for the terrorism we now see around the world. Until America changes its foreign policy on Israel, it will continue to bear the brunt of extremist attacks.
This is just my thought on the matter. Now lets get back to the subject of sex.

A Thai acquaintance of mine keeps telling me (e-mail) that the government is predicting some kind of action against falangs in Pattaya - he keeps metioning "boming" (pressed further, since I thought it was "thunderstorms") - "no, suicide boming"

I take great exception to everything else that you've said. What on earth do 200 dead Australians in Bali have to do with the US State Department's stance on Israel and Palestine?? Your comment "This is the Arab perspective, and one I sympathise with to some degree" pretty much says it all.
I don't necessarily agree with some people who wanted to deport all Arabs roaming foreign lands, but I certainly understand their viewpoint much more than yours.
Would it really take a truck full of explosives beside NEP for you to get the point or would a beheaded relative do the trick?

Well said, Intransit, but I'd disagree with you slightly in that if we're talking about terrorism in LOS, we realistically are talking about Muslim extremists. In terms of their attacks, ETA primarily sticks to Spain/France, Shining Path to Peru, IRA to the UK, etc. It's some of the extremist Muslim groups who've taken the entire world as their battleground (others of course stay local.)
Obviously Thailand could be a potential and attractive target -- there are Thai troops in Iraq, (some were killed in Karbala) and they're scheduled to stay until September. Such places as Nana, Patpong, Pattaya, etc., are clearly immoral by extremist Muslim standards and also good places to target "Western influences" and as others have noted both design and security issues make them places where it's possible to do great damage. A suicide bomber on Walking Street, Soi Cowboy, wherever, could cause utter chaos and do immense harm, and given the huge number of people always milling about would be very difficult to spot. The crowded nature of such places means a big potential for catastrophe.
Obviously, there are lots of possible targets all around the world, and it does no one any good to be scared of their own shadow, but being awake and aware is always a good idea.

A few weeks I posted about that bar, as a place worth to go, some nice girls were working there.
I was there last night, and found that the ownership has changed. All girls I liked were gone, and some of the remaining were complaining about the bad mood in the bar. The new owner is obviously a Thai girl, with a rich farang in the background.
The bar was empty, no customer, and I doubt that the business will pick up there under this circumstances.
Don't go there any more, it is not worth it.

On a similar note, there was a row a week after sept 11th in Carnegies bar in hong kong, and it really did sum up the underlying situation....
Picture a group of americans drinking in Carnegies, next to them a group of brits, The americans were discussing the fact that they should not have to fly with arabs, and arabs should fly alone, also that if they saw an arab boarding their plane, they, as americans, should be allowed to have the arab removed or be given another flight. The general feeling that to fly with an Arab was far too risky. This conversation was rowdy and loud and heartfelt. A rather topsy brit (not me) piped up at the group and said "It's not arabs i'm afraid to fly with, its yanks, because so many different groups of extremists are after you guys, theres more chance of something happening if there are yanks there"

Of course there isn't. Thailand does NOT have a free press and even less free TV media. Everything is government-controlled, army-owned, and/or fear-instilled.
And don't expect the US media to report the truth about the situation in Pattani either. Not as long as Bush is in power, anyway.
Thailand is scared shitless that the tourists will leave if they find out what is really happening in the southern province.
For years the media in Thailand have failed to report the truth about what has been going on in Pattani, the southern Muslim part of Thailand. That part of Thailand has always been colonized, exploited, oppressed, economically neglected by the political-military establishment that rules LOS and it is a totally impoverished region. The problems there are vast and difficult to solve.
But when the guy who rules Thailand now (the Bush-buddy who last year ordered the killing of 2000 drug suspects without trial, wanted all bars to close at midnight, stopped sales of fake Nike gadgets and software copies to please the mega-corporations in the US, making tens of thousands of his own impoverished people jobless over night), when this guy recently had 200 Muslims massacred, I believe he opened hell's gates for Thailand.
By the way, 3 million Muslims live in Thailand. They have nothing to say and they have no part whatsoever in the rising wealth of this nation. They do not feel part of this nation. In fact they should be granted autonomy or independence or allowed to join Malaysia. After the massacre this is the only possible solution.
But the Thai government who treats them like animals will not allow that of course, because the south is rich in resources.
The massacre was the point of no return. The extremists who instrumentalize ethnic problems and such sad events are all to happy about the massacre, because now in they eyes of the oppresed Muslim population of Thailand they clearly have a mandate to hit back and to hit hard, and I believe they will do. And they probably have a million more supporters in Thailand than before.
It's VERY easy for them to bring tourism to Thailand down to ZERO! Thailand is so full of rich, soft targets, it's hard to believe. Bali is nothing compared to it. If they hit a few times in the right places, how many of tourists do you think will ever go to Thailand again? And what will the Thai economy do which is totally dependent on tourism?
I only wish His Majesty the King, a very wise and good man, would have intervened in this ethnic conflict. He has before brought peace to this land by stopping certain political and military leaders who would have led this wonderful country into civil war and uniting the people. The bastards had to go down on their knees in front of His Majesty the King and repent for shooting demonstrators. And the nation licked its wounds and went back to business as usual.
The King should do this again now on national television, because the army did exactly the same thing again, it was Thais massacring Thais. And this was ordered by a guy whose party calls itself THAI RAK THAI (Thai love Thai).
If His Majesty fails to do this, probably because those around him prevent him from knowing what's really going on in this country, the future looks very bleak for LOS and for happy mongering in Bangkok and elsewhere.
So we should at least in our minds prepare to say goodbye to Thailand. When the going gets rough, who will stay? You, me?
A year ago when there was already a big terrorist scare in Pattaya, I stayed at the Welcome Plaza. One floor below me was the US military police headquarters and US servicemen were all over the place. I still stayed. I had a good feeling. No problem.
But the way things look now - would I stay there again when the Navy goes ashore? Not if they gave me the room for free!
After the massacre in Pattani, nobody will be safe in LOS. And what happened to Paul Johnson in Saudi Arabia, can happen to anyone of you or me at any time right here in LOS.

But Asaha had friends his parents didn't know about: Islamic radicals who were recruiting impressionable young men for a mysterious holy war here in the jungles of southern Thailand.
Asaha's secret life was exposed only by his death. He was killed by police along with 13 other militants April 28 when they staged a suicidal assault on a government office near this village. Most were armed only with machetes.
"They used my son because he was young," says his father, rubber farmer Tama Dajing, 49. "He could be fooled very easily. ... I blame myself because I just worked. I went out in the morning and I came home at night, and I didn't know what was going on."
No one seems to know exactly what is going on here in the predominantly Muslim southern tip of Thailand. Mysterious insurgents are terrorizing the countryside, bewildering the government in Bangkok and raising fears that radical Islamic groups from outside Thailand may have found a new base in Southeast Asia.
"It's still a witch's brew. It's still incubating," says Paul Quaglia, a former CIA (news - web sites) official now working as a security consultant in Bangkok with Pacific Strategies & Assessments. "Regional Islamic terrorists are looking at the area for a possible jihad (holy war). Disgruntled Muslim youth form a potential labor pool" for terrorists.
Southeast Asia already is seething with Islamic violence. The group Jemaah Islamiyah, which has been linked to al-Qaeda, was behind bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists, in Bali, Indonesia, in October 2002. A group called Abu Sayyaf has terrorized the traditionally Muslim region of Mindanao in the southern Philippines for several years, kidnapping tourists and attacking local Christians. Authorities fear that extremists also want to use the lawless jungles of southern Thailand to launch a holy war.
The United States has not turned southern Thailand into a new front in the war on terror and considers the insurgency an internal Thai matter. No Thai insurgent groups appear on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations. However, there is some evidence that Jemaah Islamiyah, which is on the U.S. terror list, has been active in Thailand. One of the group's leaders was captured in central Thailand last year, and some of the attackers in a wave of violence April 28 reportedly wore Jemaah Islamiyah T-shirts and in some cases showed knowledge of sophisticated military tactics.
Country shaken
The violence has killed nearly 200 people, most of them Muslim, in Thailand this year. It has shaken a country that is 95% Buddhist and best known as a place where foreign tourists carouse in the raucous bars of Bangkok, relax on the white beaches of Phuket or explore the temples and handicraft markets of Chiang Mai.
The Thai government of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has tried to downplay the violence and has sometimes blamed it on criminal gangs to protect the country's tourist trade. But the threat from Islamic extremism is becoming harder to ignore:
• Last August, Indonesian-born Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist Riduan Isamuddin was arrested in a joint CIA-Thai operation in central Thailand. Isamuddin, better known as Hambali, is the mastermind of the Bali bombings and apparently had been plotting to attack the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (news - web sites) summit last October in Bangkok.
• On Jan. 4, insurgents raided an armory in Narathiwat province, killing four Thai soldiers and getting away with hundreds of assault rifles and machine guns.
• In March, masked, armed men attacked a quarry stocked with rock-busting explosives in Yala province. They escaped with 56 sticks of dynamite, 176 detonators and 1.4 tons of ammonium nitrate, the fertilizer used in the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995.
In Thailand's deep south, the population is 80% Muslim. Militants have burned dozens of secular government schools, murdered Buddhist monks and attacked police posts.
"This is a volcanic area," says Panitan Wattanayagorn, a Thai expert on the security situation in the south. "From time to time, you have explosions."
Non-Thais in Thailand
The people of southern Thailand are distinct from the rest of the country's population. Their ethnic background is Malay, not Thai. Their religion is Islam, not Buddhism. Their language is a local dialect called Yawi, indecipherable to most Thais. And the southerners have a history of independence from the government in Bangkok. Until it was annexed in 1902, southern Thailand was part of an independent Malay kingdom with its capital at Pattani.
Many southerners have never accepted Thai rule. A violent separatist movement tore through the region in the 1960s and 1970s. The situation had settled by the 1990s, calmed by economic development and political changes that let local Muslims elect their leaders and send them to the national legislature in Bangkok.
But trouble continued to simmer. Government officials in the south were notoriously corrupt even by lax Thai standards. The local economy lagged the most prosperous parts of Thailand. A stricter, less tolerant form of Islam - related directly or indirectly to hard-line Saudi Arabian Wahhabism - began to gain influence.
A more potent form of Islam appeals to many Thai Muslims resentful of being left behind economically and inflamed by images of Muslims under siege by Israel in the West Bank and Gaza and by the United States in Iraq (news - web sites).
Even so, it is not entirely clear what is motivating the current insurgents: a revival of the separatist insurrection; local links with foreign terrorists seeking, as Hambali was, to establish a fundamentalist Islamic caliphate across Southeast Asia; or local power struggles.
The government declared martial law in three southern provinces - Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat - on Jan. 5, the day after the armory raid. It has begun joint border patrols with troops from neighboring Malaysia.
Tipped off that the insurgents planned a wave of coordinated attacks on 11 police and government posts across the three southern provinces April 28, Thai troops and police were waiting. They gunned down 108 insurgents, including Asaha Dajing, the teenage student. Critics question whether the lethal force was justified against attackers carrying mostly machetes, not firearms. "This is too many dead, absolutely too many," says Ambhorn Meesook, a member of Thailand's National Human Rights Commission. Five members of the Thai security forces also died.
Among the dead that day were 32 militants who had taken refuge in the 426-year-old Kreu-Se mosque in Pattani. They declared over a mosque loudspeaker that they would die there. They did, wiped out in a seven-hour police assault. So many Muslim pilgrims now visit the site that the mosque has become a tourist attraction, surrounded by stalls selling items from Pringles to sarongs.
Dozens of Thai Muslims also have been taken away by armed men believed to be police or security forces. Disappearances and mysterious killings have become more common under the increasingly authoritarian rule of Prime Minister Thaksin. A nationwide crackdown on drug dealers last year left nearly 2,300 dead. Many were believed to be victims of extrajudicial killings by police.
Deaths and disappearances
Authorities appear to be using the same brutal tactics against Muslims they see as troublemakers. Prominent Muslim human rights lawyer Somchai Neelaphaijit vanished in Bangkok on March 12 and hasn't been seen since. Four police officers have been arrested in his disappearance.
Around midnight Jan. 26, two pickups pulled into Tohporka, a sleepy village of 200 people in Narathiwat province where stray cats and roosters roam the streets and sheets of recently harvested rubber hang to dry from wooden houses that stand on stilts.
The trucks stopped in front of the house being rented by Ibrahim Se, 38, a rubber tapper. Five armed men wearing masks piled out of the trucks, broke down the door and hauled Se away. His wife, Nurida Kamae, 28, ran after them but was warned off by a masked man with a shotgun who taunted her: "Where are you going? Are you going to Bangkok with him?"
She hasn't seen her husband since. She says she has no idea why he might be in trouble. The couple spent all their time working in the rubber forests, saving money to build a house of their own and teaching Islam to the children of the village.
Nurida says that she suspects - but can't prove - that a neighbor may have framed him for reasons she doesn't want to go into.
Some analysts fear that the government's heavy-handed tactics will backfire.
"Over the long term, it's going to further estrange the Muslim community," security consultant Quaglia says. "They don't like it when human rights lawyers disappear. It scares them. They could be next."
Perhaps the backlash has begun. On May 30, the decapitated body of a 63-year-old Buddhist rubber farmer was found a mile from his home in Narathiwat province.
Next to his body was a written warning threatening to kill more "innocent Buddhists" if police arrested more "innocent" Muslims.
That may be true, but active Islamic militants are also seeking recruits for terror campaigns in the United States.
Can we go back to talking about pussy now?
Islamic groups have been advocating for secession from Thailand ever since the kingdom of Pattani was brought under Siamese control back in the 17th century, as the Thai rulers denounced Islam and imposed their language on the area. It's been simmering ever since, and every so often boils up again, and Thaksin's heavy-handed approach to things is no doubt one reason it's back on the rise. That's hardly something to lay at the feet of bin Laden.
Let's see -- Bush is a Christian who fancies himself a "war president" and has thus far invaded two countries. Guess Christianity isn't a religion of peace either, huh? Never mind, that's off-topic.

I was in Bangkok last week and Nana Entertainment Plaza closed at 1:00 am. Many of the clubs let the customers stay inside the clubs after 1:00 but no one new was let in. Also I could not find any Go Go Club showing in the complex.
Back in Pattaya now and things are great here, lots of clubs showing and 2:00 or later closings.

Many of us are arriving late at Don Muang airport (coming from the USA) and we used to be able to hit NEP and/or Angel's Disco before the old 2 AM closing time. With the new closing time that appears unlikely now. How has the 1 AM closing time of NEP (Angel's too?) affected the street scene out in front (Soi 4) and in the Nana Parking lot? Are there still many girls milling about at 2AM or have they begun to dissipate by then. Also, along Sukhumvit near Soi 4 as well. I am trying to get a sense of whether it's still worth the effort to rush over there after arriving late at Don Muang and checking into our hotel. Closing was 2 a.m. and the only bar showing was the second one on the left, downstairs. Forget the name, maybe Pretty Lady? They were topless on the main stage.
Angels closed at 2 a.m., and yes, the parking lot was full at that time with prime pickings.

I was in Bangkok just over a week ago and no sign of 1 am closing, not in Nana area anyway. Nana car park busy but not as busy as my last visit in January. Tuk Tuk drivers seem to know where there is a "bar open" but I did not take up their offer. If you really need a beer after 2am pop into the Nana Hotel bar, they will be happy to take 100 baht from you or you could visit 7/11 and get one for 40 baht.
I am in coming on a late flight after midnight staying at the Westin. Any recommendation on where to find some fun. Preferably with little effort that will come to me.

Daytime action? I'll be in Bangok for a few weeks with a girlfriend next month, and the only time I will be able to go out on my own is during the day. Is there anyplace during the day where the really beautiful girls can be found for some quick action? I guess I have from noon to about 8 p.m. or so.

Most of the MPs open around noon, although the number of girls working there tends to be rather sparse until late afternoon. It should be picking up by 5pm and fully staffed by 7. If you get there at 6, that would be about the latest time you could arrive to get you out by 8. Try Darling or Mona Lisa, which are the two best, IMHO.
If you're just interested in a BBBJ, the Rose Bar in Patpong opens early, and you could probably get a fuck right in the back room on the premises if you push it. At least I did. The girls there tend to be less than prime quality, however.

Depending on how late you arrive, you will be very close to Soi Cowboy (five minute walk). They are closing now at 2 a.m. and you can look in the bigger bars there to see if something catches your eye.
Right in front of the Westin at the Sukhumvit entrance, there are always a lot of girls working on the street - some quite cute. If there is nothing which strikes you there (it is changeable on any given night) turn right and walk west along Sukhimvit (soi numbers will get lower) and you will meet a great many young ladies to choose from.

Just got back from BKK and Pattaya.
Great weather, cool and breezy. Lots of girls and not many guys, so had a lot of choices. Sukhumvit was almost as crowded as high season, though some of my favourites had gone home for holidays.

I just returned from a very quick trip to Bangkok. What a great city!
Since I was on business most of my first day there was with clients, so very little time for mongering. I stayed at the Westin and found the location very good. The Sheraton is right accross the street on Sukmitvit Road. The Wesyin is also girl friendly and there were no problems.

Once there, what's the money like? I have little idea of the value of Thai baht or the cost of living there - is accomodation normally thrown in with the job or do you find your own? How much is rent on something habitable, that wouldn't have chicks running away at the sight of it? If possible, could you give me some sort of an idea of the overall situation?
Also, you posted one pic showing some female students, outdoor, wearing blue and white uniforms. My god they were hot! Is this an accurate reflection of the kind of girls one would find at these schools?! I am planning my first trip to BKK in the late July-early August time frame. I am a middle-aged Caucasian traveling alone on a “mongering trip”, and I want to “blend-into” the environment as much as possible. BO57, well unless you look Thai, you'll probably stick out. The standard Falang uniform is shorts, shirts and sandals or Nikes. Don't worry about it.
You can take the taxi booth downstairs (add booking fee), or take the escalator upstairs and grab a taxi there. (No booking fee). Makes sure they use the meter, and start it when you're in the car. Late at night you don't have to take the toll road if you don't want to. During the normal day, you'll want to!
In Sukhumvit area, I recommend Majestic Suites. Grand President is okay.

We were the only Farangs in a disco (Route66) that was packed. The music and atmoephere was good. Luckily for me, my friend's GF invited 3 of her friends to meet us there. All three worked at a Korean Karoke and they spoke little English so there was a lot of smiling back and forth.
At 2AM we went to eat at the RASHADA SEA FOOD market. A huge place located on Rachada Rd. Tons of people, it was like an after hours party place were you can seat down to eat and LOOK. They have a DJ and the music is a bit loud for eating but a fun place. Many girls in here. I was told some girls came from MPs, Go Gos and regular party girls. The sight was great, we saw about Farangs and the girls walk around flirting... This is a good place to go as an alternative to the Nana parking lot where the options of quality, variety is better. Also across the street from this place there is a disco called Dance Fever that I have been to before and its a huge place with lots of women in there. Worth checking out if you get tired of the same old scene but you will have to work a little to pick up a girl.
We ended the night (morning) at 3:45Am and I took one of the girls I was introduced to. She was delicious and gave her 1,500bt although she did not ask for money. All worth it.

Nana Disco - a.k.a Angels Disco.
This topic came up in the Photo Gallery, so I thought I'd follow-up here get some more information on this hidden delight.
Traveler has informed me that this place is
"is in the basement of the Nana Hotel at Nana Plaza. Entrance fee is around 200 baht now, but you get a "free" drink."
I'm wondering how I could have been to BKK three times, spent a significant amount of time on Soi 4, and never knew about this disco? Even though I once visited a close friend in the Nana Hotel. I've never seen it advertised, signs for it in the hotel, or heard about it.
I certainly would have preferred the Phuket-like disco place over the smoke-filled drinking scene of the go-go bars.
So how is this place? Are there many high-quality free-lancers?
Any more input on this basement disco?
Also, what time does this place close? 2 a.m. ?
Arrived last night around 11:30, it was 1:00 before I headed over to the Nana Plaza. Didn't see anyone I liked so I went over to Nana parking lot at about1:55. Picked An, 23 who has a great personality. She had a wrinkled belly from giving birth, but nice everywhere else. Enthusiastic kisser, nice big boobs and big dark nipples. Reluctant at first to smoke me, but really got into once she started.
So I figure you guys are right, freelancers are better than the starfish bar girls I have been with.
Going down the street to Gullivers and see what I can find.
Anyone have any idea why Thai women get those awful wrinkled bellys from childbirth? I have fucked 40 year olds at home who have had two kids, but still had smooth if chubby tummies.
Thong Lo, Soi 10

I found a new area in Thong Lo Soi 10, a few discos, predominantly visited by Thai youngsters. But I also saw some Farang there. Most of the visitors < 30 years old.
I was there last night, there are 3 discos, a big parking lot, some restaurants. Live music in 2 of those discos, many people. Starts to get full around 11:30 PM.
I could make eye contacts to some girls, 2 girls send me their mobile numbers on a paper, so I think there are opportunities for Farang to get into contact with regulars or semi-professionals. The scene is a abit like the area around Hollywood in Rhatchada Road.
For those who are looking for students or regular Thai woman - this could be a hunting area, because the discos are not that big, there is more light in there, and many people are sitting outside just for a drink, chatting. But - don't expect that you can score there in the first night you talk to somebody - it will last some days/weeks until the girl knows you a bit.
Around the area there are some expensive condos, and I saw BMWs, Mercedes' and other expensive cars as well as "garbage" cars from other youngsters. I expect to find two types of people there: Those sons/daughters of rich Thais, and students from Rhamkamhaeng, there are some cheaper appartment blocks for students close to that area. But I did not check it out in details up to now. Will go there again, for sure.
How to get there:
Thong Lo is Suhkumvit Soi 55. Coming from Sukhumvit ex direction Nana/Asoke you turn left into Thong Lo, and after approx. 1 km right into Thong Lo Soi 10, which connects Thong Lo with Ekamai Road. After 500 m the area is on the left hand side, disco names are "Love Sick" (which is obviously closed), "Ka Ze", "Mega Bite" - and one more, I forgot the name.
At the entry of that area are light signs, and there is a small restaurant "Ton Kao" (Rice Plant) around the corner, which serves rice soup after midnight. Excellent, if you like rice soup.
Nice area. But very Thai.

As a middle-aged caucasian, you will stand out no matter how you dress. I just wouldn't worry about it, as no one else will. I fit the same description as you and have never had any problems from anybody at all even thought it was quite clear what I was there for.

easy to find the disco. If you enter the Nana hotel you will have the Nana coffee shop to your left. Just walk straight, pass the toilets and you are there !
It's quite small, dark and extremely loud. Quality is the same like the parking lot, cause most left overs from Angels - which is closing at 2am - go there to get a customer.

You will be just fine. There are countless westerners in Bangkok. Lots from Europe and Australia, Germany etc. Americans everywhere also. I would advise you to avoid the many arabs you will encounter. They can be rude, dangerous and some are probably even terrorists living in Thailand. On my last trip to Thailand I sat next to a groups of Arabs in one of the venues, these people were rude, pushy, treated the girls and help very nastily! There made constant hateful reference to many of the American's in the club. They often come into the clubs in large groups and "take it over" They can be very obnoxious and i would advise leaving if this happens. I got up and left and watched my back while exiting.
I'm by no means racist towards arabs, I just call balls and strikes as I see them. I realize there are millions of good arabs round the world, lots full of peace and good will, but unfortunately, not many of these nice types, seem to make it to Thailand.

It may not have any thing to do with Indians. It might just be two people acting irresponsibly who just happen to be from India. NOT all Indians act that way neither does any one else from any other part of the world. Just mere coincidence.

Thanks for the feedback on the Nana disco. I'll check it out next time. My last trip to LOS was three weeks in duration. I spent the first two nights in BKK and avoided the city the rest of the time.
It seems the Nana Disco doesn't measure up to a place like Tiger Entertainment in Phuket where the freelancers tend to look better than the above-average bar girl. Also, the mutual vibe is always a good thing as the top girls do have a lot of discretion on who they choose to mingle with.
I'm starting to find the beach areas, islands, and the North far more pleasant to be in. I even tell non-sex travelers that once they've seen the Grand Palace, Ancient City, and the general vicinity, there's not much else going on there.
If I wind up spending time at Chula. University, I'll obviously have to spend more time in BKK, but if that's the case, my goal will be to find companions outside of the bar scene since time will not be as important a factor. I'll still be looking forward to the getaways out of the city between courses.

There is no basement Nana disco.
Only "Angel's" a.k.a the Nana disco. (one and the same, girls do NOT flock from one place to the other)
This bar is run and leased by a falang and you may not bring drinks from the Nana hotel bar into Angel's and vice versa.
It's fun to sit in the Nana hotel bar lounge outside the entrance with a drink to watch the girls enter, check their bags and congregate in bright lights before going inside.
There probably isn't even a basement in the Nana hotel. If there is you would probably find a boiler room, grease and ants.
The quality is not "the same" as the parking lot at 2am.
This is because the hottest chicks arrive between 10 and midnight and get taken very quickly.
The leftovers and sloppy seconds can be found at the "parking lot auction".
Be careful what you read in this forum and don't trust just anyone.

It appears that you have a difference in opinion with some of the posters on this forum, which is perfectly fine, as it's okay to have varying viewpoints. Most of the matters discussed here, especially when it comes to the "quality" of the ladies, is quite subjective, especially since many of us have different standards in what we want.
Regardless of all the readings I've done on this forum, in all categories, I beleive the best knowledge and experience is my own intuition. I've been to LOS three times, traveled to a few places, studied the language enough to be conversational, and we all learn our little niches and techniques.
I've decided to stop posting photos of experiences in the Photo Gallery. While it's fun to view the images there and read the stories, I've determined that there are so many ladies of differenct size, shape, and personality, that there's no need to chase down the IBM and GE's on this forum. I search for the lesser-known venture stocks. Also, I would advise travling to Thailand again, or going for the first time, should do a little exploring before chasing down a pretty photo in the gallery. Perhaps it should just be viewed as a sampling of what this industry has to offer.
As for Nana Disco, I'm sure I'd be able to walk in and access the situation and see if it's for me. I tend to be annoyed by smokers and smoke-filled rooms and, no offence to anyone, the typical farang.
Again, and this probably doesn't apply to many others, I find that the quality of ladies improves outside of Bangkok as I've found better quality in Samui, Phuket, Pattaya, and Koh Pah Nang. I also find BKK to be more expensive and over-rated in some due to location and the extreme business-like atmosphere.
And finally, about "trusting" people here, I take everything with a grain of salt and it's all about sharing experiences. It's okay to have a difference of opinion, but there really isn't a lot of who's right and who's wrong unless we're dealing with legal facts and precedented issues.
