There are now a lot of relatively cheap airplanes and I am not sure long bus rides of 6+ hours are worth it any more unlessyou want ot travel around, testing yur luck and the local fare.

That is a great fact sheet on getting around.
But you forgot to mention the motorcycle taxi, the fastest method of transportation in all Bangkok! The cost is usually about one baht per soi, meaning, to go 10 soi's will cost you 10 baht.
I took one from Nana plaza to Onnut Soi 24 once when my girlfriend was pissed at me. She was like, "You are at Nana at 1 in the afternoon? You fucker! You've got 20 minutes to get your slutty ass home or your not getting any dinner."
20 minutes and 150 baht later I was eating a bowl of noodles. Motorcycle taxi's are the way to go when you gotta get there fast. And it is one exciting ride! Trust me, I know. :)

I've read the forum and have enough tips for 50 nights, but I'd like to know if you had one night in Bangkok, where would you go? I think we will be staying near the US Embassy. Go to Biergarten; check it out. Then walk around Nana Plaza. Lots of short time hotels: the skanks will know. If you see nothing suiting your tastes/price range, begin touring the soapies. Yours is a time trade off. Frankly, if you have only one short time shot, you might be better trying an all in service and avoiding short timing freelancers. Hope this helps

As Domino said, the Biergarten (Suk/Soi 7) will have many short-time freelancers, as will the "Morning & Night" Bar next to NEP (Suk/Soi 4). There are also several options on Suk/Soi 5, including Gullivers(sp). Quality of the girls is all over the place, but you can probably find something suitable.
I had a good "soapie" experience at CP2 about 1 month ago, and recommend the place. The cost was 1900Baht for 2 hours, with no BS to deal with from the Papasan, etc...
For a more hard-core sex experience, there is Eden Club (Suk/Soi 7/1). It's more pricey than the other options, my bill was 4040B including all drinks, but I think it's something everyone should try once.

If you want less skanky skanks then there are many places; Hard Rock, Q-Bar, Mystique, Spasso, Bed Supperclub etcetera, etcetera. But be prepared to spend a little more money, grab less ass in public and speak some Thai.

You are right about Bed and Q-bar. Very few pros there. Rivas and CM2 are full of pros. Any girl there is likely to be a pro - so no need to search too long. it's not that HiSo Thais do not like farangs, they just have nothing in common with them and therefore normally don't mix up. For those Thais, farangs aren't the top of the evolution - like SA and Domino seem to believe - but rather the bottom due to their (mis)behaviour and lack of knowledge of Thai culture.
Don't forget, the vast majority of farangs are just tourists who will come to the Kingdom for cheap pussy. Ask yourself why a HiSo Thai should hang out with them ? They do have enough money - in most cases even more than those farangs - usually avoid places like Nana and the language barrier adds up as well. Sure, HiSo Thais usually speak english very well but most part of conversation and kidding is in Thai. Also many of those tourists do not fit in, regarding interests, age, dress code and so on.
On the other hand many of the farang expats do not fit in as well. They are often there for the very same reasons like farang rourists, which is a bad choice in my opinion - like SA rightfully pointed out. But those who have a decent job, come in contact with HiSo Thais and make friend with them (e.g. Old Thai Hand) do easily mix up with them and will be respected, even though they always will be outsiders somehow.
I guess the biggest prob will be, how to come in contact with them. Like always it most likely depends on your behaviour and attitude. As soon as you are interested in the country you live in and respect their rules and culture, there won't be an unsolvable prob.

I used ATM's with no problem. Around Nana plaza are a couple.
My bank is one of the large multi state banks, Washington Mutual.
Look on your ATM card for PLUS or CIRRUS or STAR these are the symbols, I believe, that are accepted almost universally

Nefarious, just be aware that ATMs are fewer and farther between on Koh Samui. Being away from things, the ATM networks also seem to have more outages there, though that's improved over time. I generally take along some traveler's checks for there, simply because there are more currency exchange places, which can handle them, than there are ATMs on the island. (Though I recognize the traveler's check suggestion doesn't help a lot since you're leaving today!)
And there are a number of decent internet cafes on Samui -- there's one in the main drag along Chaweng that has fast and reliable connections, though it's so popular that at times it can be tough to find a seat.
Any info on Khao Sarn Road? I saw a photo from there and was not sure if it was a Patpong type of road. Is it in Bangkok, or another city in Thailand

Khao San Rd. is in BKK, between Democracy Monument, Sanam Luang and Wat Bowinnivet, every taxi driver knows it.
It's nothing exciting, just a small street about 200-250m long, a few souvenir shops and a couple of restaurants, bars and discos. No Gogos and the like, not like Soi Cowboy or Patpong. Often a couple of cute girls around, but not necessarily P4P. There is a nice club with good music, named Lava as far as I remember. The whole street is a bit Hippie style, more a tourist thing than a good place for mongering. If you are short on time, hunt somewhere else, otherwise have a look and give it a try, may you are lucky.

I think Khoasan Rd. is not at all bad for mongering. I scored at the Gullivers Bar there on more than one occasion. It's a little different than the Gullivers on Soi 5 though.

One caveat. The guys at Khoason are generally younger and groovier than us old farts, but if you are still healthy and can fake a "Groove on" then you'll do fine at Khoasan and you'll be all the better for the change of pace.

Bangkok is a city that blows the mind. Returning from a Phuket vacation, I realized when it comes to mongering, the girls are so much better in Bangkok than Phuket. There is more selection, they are prettier, and the hotels are much better. Really screwed up by staying in Phuket one extra day in November. One night in Bangkok is not enough.
However, in light of what the disaster that struck Phuket this week, I can only be grateful I got to enjoy the island and the people.

As an acknowledged old fart (47) I went with 3 ladies to a private club in Pattaya, after the 1am closing (which isn't exactly in effect in Pattaya).
I was probably the oldest by at least 20 years, if not more, and the only farang, but I am in decent shape (look my age though, been knocked around a lot) and enjoy partying (especially with 3 lovely Thai ladies).
I got many nice glances, a few "hello's" and some nice touching. I had my plate full, but would not have had any problems finding someone. The crowd was a mix of pro's, after work, semi pro's perhaps, and many who I don't think were pro's.
Moral, whether it's Khoasan Rd, or other areas, if you act decently you will do fine. Also I enjoy getting out of the 'mainstream' although it may be hit or miss, it's interesting

No-one ever returns there on their second trip to Thailand (except Israelis).
This place has been a backpacker ghetto for many years, but over the last few years has become more upmarket, and is attracting more Thais.
I know lots of Thais who hang out there, and have only been out there myself twice. It was easy enough to pick up a girl, especially as I was the only Farang who could speak Thai, plus am still "younger and groovier". It is easier to pick up a non-pro there than anywhere else in BKK.
Khao San still sucks though.

I know that you can score at Khao San Rd., have done it myself and was quite satisfied with it. But the selection is smaller than at the usual places and I don't know about John, if he can speak Thai, about his taste and so on.
That's why I told him to give it a try, but only if he got enough time so a "miss" won't ruin his trip. If he is short on time a "secure" trade might be the better choice.

Your advice was spot on. I added my two baht in case John had time for a miss. But yeah, if you are in Bangkok for one or two weeks and you simply have to get laid every night then skipping Khoasan Rd. is not a bad idea.

I did go there a few years back, and found it fairly quite. It was mid-week though.
