Throwing money around. I saw that once in a titty bar in the USA (they were white guys, by the way). Girl was dancing on stage, they were wadding up one dollar bills and throwing them at her. A while after she finished, she was sitting with me & I mentioned that I thought the guys were being rather rude (I had actually asked them to "modify their behavior", which put a stop to it) - she said she didn't mind, she just wanted the money after all & if they threw it at her, there was less chance that they would try to grab her. Then she told me that it was typical behavior in Canadian titty bars, where she used to work before moving south.
I've also been at bars in Brasil (years ago, other places as well) with guys who were absolutely hammered by the time we were leaving. They were so drunk, that when they reached into their pocket to get money to pay the bill, half of it would fall on the ground (they would leave it), then they would just throw the rest of the money on the table since they were too "blind" to count it. Needless to say, if they wound up taking a garota back to their hotel or apartment, she was rather "frightful to behold", more often than not, they went home alone. These guys generally wondered why they were always broke, but figured that since they couldn't remember anything and weren't bruised up, they must have had a good time.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I'm not throwing out any "race cards". I am merely pointing out certain things that are self evident. I am also not stereotyping. I am generalizing. Those two things aren't the same.
I can spot a difference between an African American or a Brazilian, or Dominican or dark Cuban a mile away. So please keep your stupid wisecracks to yourselves. The "kids" I saw were INSIDE of Help. There were only several "representing" they were a distinct minority among the other brothas there.
I was going to Rio way before it ever appeared in the Snoop Dogg vid, so I don't think you'll be teaching me much about what to look out for and see.
The interesting thing to note is that the average African American male in Rio is about a decade younger than his Caucasian American counterpart.
This leads, I suppose to some generational differences, as well as a complete lack of understanding of urban culture by your average terma hopping accountant from Omaha.
But it's all good. All in all, the brothas I have seen are all on the up and up and generally very well behaved ( often better so than the drunk accountant from Omaha)

I am not quite sure what the difference is between “stereo-typing” and “generalising”, this is basically semantics; however, I do happen to like that Snoop Dogg video and I went to Brazil for work purposes in the first place.
But if you can tell and American black male from his Brazilian counterpart you are a much better man than me because I have been to places where I have met brothas and sat down and spoken to them only to discover that actually they are from Sweden, Nigeria or wherever. Whao look who’s talking, as I do hail from the UK, my parents are from Jamaica.
But the term “Ghetto-type Americans” is offensive and brings up the image of gangsters, drug deals and guys who never finish a sentence properly. Look if someone wishes to spend his money throwing it around that’s his business, live and let live that’s what I say. What I was saying was, that whether you are balck, White, blue or green. There will always be someone that is a bad representative of whatever you are. And there will always be another group that will use that miniscule minority to accentuate their points. Can't stop it. It's always going to happen.

I do believe that people who do aren't smart enough to know better and if they couldn't learn that in their formative years what makes you think that words on a forum are going to change their minds 20-30 years later.

Do you not know that in Brazil blacks occupy the lowest area of the racial hierarchy and are basically seen as ugly, poor, and a bunch of criminals? The only blacks who are respected are those who are athletes, entertainers, or musicians with money.
Brazilians are not PC like Americans. They have no problems saying their prejudices, but unlike Americans, even though they say these things they still like to believe in the idea that Brazil is a racial democracy. It is a contradiction in some ways.
In Brazil, if you see an ad for a worker that says 'boa aparencia' (good apperance) that means this person cannot be black. If someone says they are a bunch of marginais (ghetto hoodlums), they mean they are black. Brazil's whole cosmetic industry is based on people with black blood try to be as white as possible by lightening their skin, dying their hair, and straightening it.
Have you people seen the Brazilian television recently? In a country with so much African blood, what is considered beautiful is white people.
So when you are going to a country with so much racism and un-PC behavior going on, what is the big deal about reading ghetto-type americans on the internet?

Rio Not, even though you are fairly correct, it's unfortunate that Brazil and other Latin countries are as racist on this front as they are.
Interestingly enough though - what is black to them isn't black to us (meaning Americans). Many girls we would think of black, are considered morenas or mulattas overseas. What many Latins consider "black" would be people straight out of the African bush, not the American cafe which has had some leche in also every instance along some point in time.

What I can tell you is that I went to Rio several times a year in late 90's and lived there for several months in 2000 and seeing a brotha there in those days was rare. Make that seeing any groups of brothas. There were always a couple of black guys around, but nothing like the wolfpacks one sees these days. There was a small group of doctors that flew down from Atlanta regularly and they hung out with John Thompson, one of the appt/guide dudes who is also African American, but generally speaking the difference in percentage terms or pure numerical terms woud be like the difference in night and day (or in this case, day and night? - this is a joke not a racial slam). Most brothas these days also seem to be significantly younger and more into the hip hop culture than for e.g. the Atlanta group of doctors I mention earlier.

I was in Rio/Cocacabana in mid March and felt like I was staring in my own porno movie, went to Termas Aeropuerto which is open Mon - Fri 12 - 12, a cab ride from Cocacabana.

I will come back to Rio/Brazil again, god willing in late 04 or 05, my next trip is via Ship outta Vancouver, BC which I am somewhat familiar with but haven't been there in about 8 years but spent a lot of time there in the 80's to Sitka , Alaska to Petropavlosk, Russia to Pusan, S. Korea to Shanghi, Beifing, and Hainan China then to Hong Kong, then to Vietnam , maybe to Ankor Watt Cambodia, then to Taiwan then to Japan, (around 60 days on the ship) so will be moving to the Asian board for a bit
so you all take care of Brazil for me til I get back.

regardless of how I or anyone else regards soccer vs football, the fact is your average soccer player has arms that are smaller in circumference than most American athletes' (the ones that play the basic sports that require weightlifting) wrists. So my argument stands... if the guy's much broader up top or just a hell of a lot more fat, odds are very high he's an American brotha rather than a darker skinned local, all other things aside right away from the get go. The Americans are also more likely to be taller.

I can completely commiserate with you. I appreciate your thoughts with regard to HELP. But my experiences on the cost are a bit different. Four years ago, I was taking girls out of Help for R$150, and the exchange rate was 3.45:1. This year, I was STILL paying R$150-200, but the exchange rate was 2.9:1. However, the overall talent level has gone down a notch.
What I have done is to get away from the Copa clubs and head over to Ipanema/Leblon. Try Melt, Bombar, or Guapo Loco. Or even Cozumel or Six (Lapa).
I went to Bombar as a third wheel one night. Upstairs, while cooling at the bar, I met a nice, young local carioca. We danced as a foursome and shared some drinks and laughed with her friends. The music is FAR superior to Help. A lot of American music, but very little of the aforementioned headache-inducing techno. The club itself is fairly small, but multi-level. The best feature is probably the clientele. None of the 40+, pot-bellied, balding, graying Americans or Euros that you find trolling in Help. The crowd is very attractive. A quantum leap forward from Help.
After some drinks and dancing, I went to pay for my tab. This is one of the clubs where you get a card upon entry, and tab out at the end of the night. I was pleasantly surprised when she waited on the pay line with me, and walked outside into our taxi without any discussion. Apparently, her mind was already made up. (Ahhh, Rio!) Note: you can tip any of the staff, and they’ll circumvent the long line and produce your tab.

I paid 27 from the AIRPORT to the heart of Ipanema (Posto Novi)
and I paid the very same exact metered price on the way back.
Taxis from say Help to Princesa Isabel seemed to run about 6-7 reals.
Ditto for taxis from Help back into where I was at in Ipanema.
From Princesa Isabel to my place in Ipa, the fare was probably around 11-12 reals (logical given the above)
please note that each time you get into a cab- the meter starts at 3.3 reals and then the per mile fare kicks in.
Some cabbies haven't adjusted their meters so they pull out their litttle chart, which shows what they can charge under the recently approved fare increase (15% or so) but if a cabbie does that to you, the upward adjustment should not be too drastic.
Some cabs (few but some) have "funny meters". A friend and myself got taken for 8 reals just taking a cab around Centro. Given the distance invovled and given the ride back into Copa cost us just a little more, we knew we got scammed - but what can one do.
Fortunately, most cabs are on up and up.
The scary (and amusing) thing is the Taxi mafia outside of Help. Despite signs in the disco on the stairway (saying the Disco isn't associated with them) the drunk gringos stumble outside where an entire mafia of taxistas (all UNMETERED) is waiting for them.
The drunken or clueless gringos stumble into the taxis. Many of the girls also have "deals" with this taxi mafia or a particular mafioso, whereas she gets cheap taxi service when needed in return for guiding her john into this particular taxi for the un-needlessly expensive ride ahead.
Each time I called the taxis (same thing/scam in front of Balcony and most boites btw) "thieves" in front of the girls and said we're walking up a block and catching a taxi off the street, the girls just smiled.
They KNEW the game - and knew that I knew.
Catch a street taxi, never one parked outside a tourist(y) establishment and insist on a meter.
p.s. Given I paid 27 from airport to Posto Novi, and given it takes about 7, 8 tops reals from there to Help, then your taxi fare from airport to Help should be 27 plus 7-8- but minus 3.3 -
So, that looks to me like 32. Anything above 35 and I would get very suspicious. This assumes no traffic and the most direct route into town.

You’re probably right about the P4P clubs in Asia. I’ve never been to Asia (or Europe), but I can imagine the train wrecks frequenting the clubs over there. My only real experiences are Brazil and DR, and I’ve been fortunate to find clubs in both places that are a breed apart. For example, in Santo Domingo, there’s a great club called SevenToSeven. The partygoers are younger, great-looking people. Typical of what you’d find at a Soho club in NYC, a SoBe Miami spot, or a Sunset club in LA.
My Portuguese is decent, but not great. I just don’t go to Brazil often enough to improve it. I still struggle with tense, and the slang throws me…but I do OK and people understand me. No one would mistake my Portuguese for a local.
I’m just offering some alternatives to Help for the folks who are tired of the same music / faces / scene / garotas.

That being said, the viewpoint that I have in ANY club is not to view the other guys as "competition". Rather, I view them as "my fellow partyers".
The context of who the other guys are is relevant because many women have told me that they DO charge different prices based on who they think the guy is. The guys paying the higher prices are contributing to the overall inflation that many of you have expressed concern about. I have been staying in recent years in hotels and apartments in walking distance to Help, usually not more than 2 blocks away. I have done this because I did not want to deal with the dreaded taxi mafia outside of Help at 3 in the morning.
This last trip my reservation got screwed up and I found myself a taxi ride away from Help. On all nights I took a taxi from Help to my apartment at 3 or 4 in the morning and all nights I did not have one problem from any taxi driver. The price was consistent from night to night and I felt every driver was trustworthy. These taxis were stopped right in front of Help and I just said to them how much or I told them how much I am willing to pay.
Through the years I have noticed as posters below have said that a girl will come out and say I have a friend who is a taxi driver lets use him and I always say no. One time I had a girl who insisted on using a taxi to the Debret, one and 1/2 blocks away, I dumped her immediately. Now if I hear that a girl wants to use one of her friend taxi drivers, I find it hard to trust her after that.
I also want to mention something about the clientele in Help. I agree with Catire that the crowd is mixed young and old and I agree that even the more senior patrons I have noticed including myself are very fit as he says Help is a very competitive environment.

for clarification purposes, I take it you took the street taxis that merely stopped in front of Help along Avenida Atlantica, NOT the taxis that were already pre-parked outside, correct? (those are the mafia unmarked ones, or ones with meter that the cabbie will not use)
I usually would catch the taxi in front of Bob's, as the preparked unmetered extend around the Terrazo outside. I just ignore all the ones that say, taxi taxi.
I wouldn't bash Darknight though - the advice he gave about getting out of hooker gulch wasn't bad. Au contraire, if you can swing it. Help historically has tended to be very good for me, but there are times when it's very bad. At such times I feel precisely as Darknight does (though something keeps drawing me back).
Catire, yes the taxis were the street taxis but they were stopped and parked out in front of Help, several of them. Im just mentioning it because it can be confusing since these guys were parked in front of Help.
I always found that at some point you should know approximately how much a ride costs to use as a benchmark so that you know your not getting ripped off too bad. Also I do believe that during the night the taxis charge double anyway.
Your right about Darknight, he did give some alternatives to Help and like you said sometimes they're needed. I guess I just took offense about his remark about the 40 + year old guys in Help. Hey we need some fun too.

Please read and heed. Do not use the taxis recommended by the girls you meet in Help. I recommend getting to know a taxi driver you can call.

During my last stay in Rio, I was actually positively surprised at the number of honest taxi drivers.
The only time one tried to lure me into a fixed price and caused trouble was because I broke the rule number one:"NEVER TAKE A TAXI WAITING IN FRONT OF A NIGHT CLUB". It was in front of Baronetti in Ipanema but I can imagine that the ones parked and waiting in front of HELP are the worst. You can waive any taxi driving along in the avenida Atlantica in the right direction and it will be OK.
My (honest) Garota that I met in HELP told me outside to avoid the Taxis waiting in front. If she had been trying to force me into getting into one of those, I would have anyway instantly dropped her, as this makes my Alarm Bells ring due to past bad experiences in eastern Europe. I always drove using the meter and I never saw any tuned meters, which quite surprised me.

Most Americans stay in Copacabana and spend all their time at Help or Barbarella, with all the OTHER Americans, getting ripped off. Most Brazilians would not be caught dead in those places as they are notorious ripoff joints for Gringos. Brazilain men go to the Termas or use the agencies. Above is a list of the agencies. They tend to be very honest and good valçue because 99% of their customers are local Brazilian busniessmen and they rely on repeat business. Note that some of them are in Barra de Tijuca, which is a wealthy and gorgeous suburb of Rio about 45 minutes from Copacabana. You probably don´t want to order from Tijuca unless you are staying in Tijuca or want to pay a hefty taxi fee.
Currently a lot, but not all, of these agencies are running a promocao = sale, of 100R ($37) for one hour or two hours. Some charge MUCH more, so make sure you get the price in advance. Make sure to mention the promocao when you call to get the best price. You are also expected to pay the 2-way taxi fare which should be no more than 20R ($7) anywhere in Rio, Ipanema or Copacabana. If you and a friend get two girls who come and go together, just pay for one taxi fare. Tips are not expected but heck give em another 10R or 20R. The girls where it says ¨completa¨next to their photo give complete service, oral, anal, and normal. This may cost 50R ($17) more. The ones that do not say this generally give bbbj and normal sex. Many of the girls are college girls or are sending money to Mom back in the village. They tend to be MUCH sweeter and nicer than the Disco girls. Taxi- Make sure that the taxi uses the meter. They will try to charge you a set rate. You will be better off using the meter. The cost for the ride is then clear. If the taxi does not want to use the meter get out. He is trying to take advantage.
Apartments- the apartments are great for the ladies. Bring as many as you wish, and they cost much less than hotels. The only setback is that you don't have the services that the hotels can provide. Restaurants, room service, laundry service, ect. When you use and apartment take time to stock up on drinks, snacks, anything else you may need. Be sure you ask for towels up front, you will be doing some banging and will need plenty of towels if you intend to bath often. I would also recommend using the established services for your apartment rentals. Blame it on Rio 4 Travel, and Rio Rentals 4 Less are two of the services you may want to look into.

I just got back from Rio, after a 4 week stay.
I got an apartment in the Flamingo area as the hustle and bustle of Copa is a little bit much at this point (after 3 trips in the last 2 years).
As TJ has asked for some recent Termas info, I will start with that info;
1. Luomo - Rua Siquieira Campos #143 on the second level up the escalator in the antique mall - they had some pricing deal where it was 35 R to enter if you picked a girl and 50 R if you did not pick. They had a 40 minute "Japanese Cabine" for 140 R and a 1 hour suite for 200 (plus the entry). There are a lot of postings on this place. There were a few good picks and everyone was very friendly including the management. This is an excellent place to go in my opinion.
2. Monte Carlo - Rua Hilario de Gouveia #19 at ground level - similar pricing to Luomo, but not exactly the same. Nice facility, but the ambiance was a notch below Luomo. But still there were a few good picks at this location.
3. Termas Solarium - Rua JJ Seabra #21 - also at ground level - price range similar to previous. The management here was extremely friendly (I do speak passable Portugese). Also a few very nice choices available. I was there a few times and I did see a few "swingers"-tourist. I did not find the management impolite as prev. reported. I was there 4 times and had some very good encounters. This place has the most "model types" that you will find at these type of establishments.
7. Termas Copacobana - Ave Copacabana #583 - Room#203 - this place is cheaper than the other places, but you get what you pay for. I did find a "diamond in the rough" in this place, but the facility is so dirty and run down that it takes away from the experience. This place is not rec. by me.

Try Blame it on Rio 4 Travel- they will be able to find you an apartment for around $45 to $50 dollars a night for a one bedroom, no restrictions on the ladies..they also do hotel bookings.
The Aparador- it is down towards Ipanema, and they are said to be a girl friendly.
The Copa Linda- is a hooker hotel that has cheap rooms and they allow the ladies. It is about 3 blocks from the beach, area is okay. It is around the corner and down the street from Help.
If you are able to avoid paying for you room in advance, you will be able to find a suitable hotel in very little time.

US Navy visit to Rio in June
A couple of pages back Love This Stuff says that he will be visiting Rio in June on board an aircraft carrier. Does anyone know what date in June they will be there? The hotel costs about U.S.$70 per day and there is no extra charge for the internet connection. I stayed there a few days ago and they pretty much deliver on what is promised on the website, but that being said I would not stay at the hotel again. Nevetheless, if you must have a stable internet connection in your room at a reasonable price you will get it at this hotel. The reasons why I wouldn't stay at the hotel are:
1.- It's VERY noisy. Both street noise and noise from other rooms is a problem.
2.- It's too "artsy". I have nothing against modern and innovative designs as long as comfort comes first and looks come second. That is not the case at this hotel. You get a great looking sofa and chair in your room, but sitting in either one for more than two minutes is so uncomfortable that they are unusable.
3.- I've slept in hundreds of hotel beds and the beds at this hotel have some of the hardest mattresses I've ever slept in.
If you must stay at the hotel make sure that you call them directly to reserve a room. On the day I made my reservation Expedia and Orbitz were quoting me U.S. $120 per day. I called the hotel and got a quote of U.S. $70 per day.

Will be in Rio starting from June 23. Need some advice on buses to Sao Paulo. I think the World Traveller had posted some info on this subject before. My return flight is out of Sao Paulo on July 12th, so I was thinking of spending a week in Rio and then haul ass to Sao Paulo for the rest of my trip. Would not recommend any beach vendor as you can get set-up for a scam, not selling u fake stuff, but reporting you to police after they have sold you something. If you get desperate then I would try Ipanema around posto 8 (you will smell the stuff, just walk around a bit) as less chance of getting scammed than Copa IMHO.
As with import option - of-course most customs are looking for people to take stuff out of Brazil rather than bring in so your chances are good, but you better make sure you hide it well! Obviously this is not a recommendation as it could ruin your trip before its even started!
You need to find a friend in Rio. The garota's can be good and I myself have found a few girls who are accomodating, but there needs to be a level of trust before you ask them to get you anything.

I have been to Rio 13 times in 4 years, and no vaccinations were required. They are recommended, but if you're not going to the Amazon, don't worry about it.
Late night, Brazilian customs doesn't look too hard at what you're bringing in, IMHO the best idea would be to keep it on you. Brazilian marijuana is total crap and the risk is just too great. You really want to make a desicion on whether or not you need weed on this vacation, because there are basically 2 things that do not fly in Rio (a place where almost everything goes), drugs and under-age girls. If you are caught doing either of these things, rest assured that you will be in serious trouble. Be careful with what you do and really give it some thought.

Spent a weekend again in Rio two weeks ago and here is my quick report. I used to spend some time there a couple of years ago for work and I felt like the place had changed a little bit. I would not recommend bringing anything into Brazil. Last year, a friend was caught at Rio airport with a little quantity for his personal use. Between legal fees and bribes, it cost his parents about $20,000.00 USA dollar to spring him from jail. He spent 3 days in jail and he said it was a horrible experience. His mother suffered a minor heart attack during this unfortunate incident and he blames himself for the heart attack.
By the way, he was promptly deported back to USA. If you are staying in a hotel, I will suggest making friends with one of the front desk employees. With great discretion ask how to get some and if he or she trusts you, it can be secured. Don't forget to show your appreciation because he or she could get into serious trouble and job loss. I am not a smoker but I travel often to Brazil with clients and/or co-workers who smoke, and it is the process that I use to get it for them. I have never had any problems nor gotten complaints about the quality.
Be safe and have a great a time in Rio. Check out VM at night IF you know someone that can take you. It is a scary place but I think it is worth visiting once. I never leave Rio without paying a visit. VM gives a whole new meaning to the expression "meat market". One of the best sex I had in Brazil was with a 19 year old I met at VM. As far as I know, there are no shots for malaria. Depending on where you go, you probably don't need this - if you are going into the interior (Amazon lots of mosquitos) it would be a good idea, if you are staying in Rio, it's probably not necessary. There are various pills - quinine (daily), chloroquine phosphate (weekly) and Lariam (never used this one, but I think it's once every two weeks). If you do this, make sure you do it correctly - the doctor or pharmacist should give you guidlines, I'm a bit rusty, but it's something like take the pills for a week or two before the trip, during the trip then for a month after you return home.
Yellow Fever:
If you are doing a lot of international travel, it's always a good idea to make sure that your yellow fever vaccination is up to date and make sure that you have it stamped by the doctor in your "international certificates of vaccination" card (yellow booklet that's issued by the World Health Organization) as proof. The reason most countries require this is that they don't want to worry about you bringing yellow fever into their country from where ever you have been prior to your visit to their country. Some countries (Nigeria, for instance) could care less whether you've been vaccinated - they just use the lack of proof as a reason to extort money out of you.

My last experience with a dupla was a boite in Sao Paulo (Bomboa) where the girls were amazing. i went into the boite and two girls basically jumped all over me. I agree with you, Meia Pataca has been going down hill for a couple of years now. It wasn't too long ago that you can go and sit at Meia Pataca and find some nice girls for an afternoon or early evening session. Now they are very low quality. Also I used to know many people who sat there but now they go elsewhere, none of my friends sit there anymore , nobody likes it, its off limits, I haven't sat there in years. Things change, so be it.

I have to agree with you about the general decline at Meia Pataca. In 2000, I picked up some fine stuff there, and saw even finer stuff picked up by others better positioned than I was.
My last trip there late last year, I took a work associate for pizza and I was astounded to find the place ringed (literally -- they had installed a rope barrier) by very aggressive 2-5s. I don't even consider anything less than a 7 (under normal circumstances, you understand), so nothing was in play.
However, I can make the following terma recommendations, provided they are still to be found (most had been at their respective posts for a while, so they may not be as transient as the average terma garota):
Solarium - Joyce (pronounced JOY-see) Small boobs, short hair, tight body, the only CBJ I've ever had in a terma and only the 2nd I've had after about 40 garotas in Brasil -- Nevertheless, she was hot and got me off a lot faster than I had expected. Shit.

Late Night Every time you change a girl you need to change the condom, this is the usual protocol. On my last trip to Rio one night I was with 2 girls and I more or less used about 6 condoms going back anf forth. I just had a week in Rio, I've been in Copacabana. Rented a little appartment just on Avenida Atlantica from an Italian funny guy I met on the plan from Milano to Rio. Apartment was good and he provided me also the daily clean service.

picking up non-working girls depends on your language skills. Not many girls speak enough English for you to have a converstion with them.
Be careful who you meet on the beach. Working girls always hang out at the beach and they are usually the only ones that will speak with tourists. I stayed in an apartment right next to help when I went to Rio in April. I would actually recommend staying in a Hotel when in rio. Some hotels are actually pretty cheap and the best thing about hotels is that there is always great security and they clean your room every day.
On my trip we had some problems with the girls that we brought back from help with regard to the girls being too wild. Eventually the girls were kicked out, but it also turned out that we too were kicked out and none of our money was refunded. supposedly this is the normal policy with brazil apartment rentals. With a hotel, I am pretty sure that we would have received some warning at worst, but we would not have been out 800 dollars
With regard to regular girls, I did not have that much luck. I did not speak the language and I am sure that there are plenty of brazilian guys more that happy to bone regualar chicks. Additionally, one thing that I noticed is that brazilian guys take care of themselves. Most are in pretty good shape with a tan. It was hard to compete. The best advice for not paying is go to help and have a lot of fun with the girls there. There were several women that attacked me asking me to take them home. I was not in the mood all the time so I usually said that I did not have money. They sometimes persist and you can take them back and not pay them. My best move if I really did not want to have sex with them was to say that I don't use condoms. This usually did the trick, but some still persisted.

An appartment is great as it gives you lots of freedom (you can bring as many chicks you want at any time of the day etc). However, the advantage of a hotel is that you have more security. I know it is a pain in the ass but at the hotel the girls actually have to register and leave her id at the reception which is actually a good thing and for your protection - remember that lots of the girls in Copa are pretty hardcore and not the most stable ones around. I actually got pretty friendly with one "nice" girl at Help a couple of years ago and she sometimes would point out the ladies to watch out for and it is not uncommon that many of them tries to take advantage of you and tries to rip you off especially if you have been sippin them capirihas to much during the night. I have done both and in my oppinion there are pros and cons that only you can decide on what fits you the best. If you are in an appartment you are pretty much on your own. On the other hand if you like to sample more than one specimen at the same time many hotel will only allow you to bring one guest at a time up which I learned the hard way (not fun as I had two lovlies ready to go). Remember that there are some pretty cheap sex hotels that actually are very cool with mirrors cool beds that are easily availalbe in Copa that are easy to just eat the cost of and walking out of if the girl(s) start to give you shit.
Jim, you might find some Brazilian girls who speak English in Ipanema. I heard a lot of English spoken in Ipa recently, typically between what looked like American exchange students, etc and their Brazilian counterparts.
That would be the scene you'd need to plug yourself into which could be difficult on a short vacation and without contacts, though if you hear it spoken you can always be brave and outgoing, and bump into the conversation and take it from there.
There was an organic kilo place just by Ipa's Porcao where I heard it spoken almost nightly.
Forget about hooking up with a non pro in Copa or trying your tactics in Copa.
Copa exists for tourists, mostly of the sex variety and hookers.

Yes, Bobby aka blameitonRio aka Gringomanagement is great, they are so great that I decided to blacklist them after using their services for the first time.
They are the most unreliable guys I've ever met. I wouldn't recommend even my worst enemy to book an apartment with them, unless you are looking for a bug-infested shithole in the middle of nowhere (4km from Help), with no sheets in the beds and with dirty linen thrown in the bathroom, which is where I arrived my first night of my holiday, instead of the nice, clean, bright, and well-located ('within walking distance of Help' according to David's words) apartment that I was supposed to find.
My advice is to avoid them like the plague.
If you want an apartment book it with ANYONE else, it won't be worse than gringomanagement, that's for sure.

I had heard bad things about Bobby @ blameitonrio4travel and steered away from using them. I have only heard raves about gringomanagement. I used them on my last trip and had no problems and would actually recommend them to anyone. I'd be surprised if they are the same people.

Bobby at BlameitonRio and David at Gringomanagement have overlapping interest (they help each other ocassionally) but they are not in business together. Alot of people give Bobby negative reviews, personally he has helped me with issues in the past and I have rented cellphones from him. He was always helpful in my limited experience.
I have rented from David 16 times in 2 years and have NEVER had a bad experience. I would venture to say that the previous poster had an extremely out of the ordinary experience. I would highly recommend Gringomanagement .....
