I do think darker skin color will need some make-up treatment to vring out the glory in photographs. lighting is also essential part of it. I work part time as a photographer and di face these issues. Most digital P&S cameras have significant shutter lags, especially when using flash. That will also contribute to the rate of failure. Of course. Thais will always smile and welcome anyone, so that you are never made to feel uncomfortable. They may even pay you compliments. That's their charm. I work with and am continually around many high-ranking military and civil officials, certainly at least as high and probably much higher than your officer friend, and I can assure you that on the surface, they would all act politely and welcoming to anyone because that's how the culture has taught them. Just got back to the US after a month in TH. As I was coming thru customs the officer ask me to open my laptop and scanned it for .jpgs and asked if I had any movies.
I had a few pics of some girls with their clothes on but, thanks to the increasing trend of TH girls knowing about their pics possibly appearing on the internet, did not have many explicit shots.
The way the officer did the search was (in windows) to go to "search" and search for all .jpg files using the wildcard *
One could easily defeat this by with a number of ways:
- do a mass rename of .jpg files to something other files extension - I'm sure there is probably shareware to do this
- in windows properties, "hide" the files and make sure "show hidden files" is not selected in windows folder properties
- switch drives
- burn everything to a CD (but then you have to hide the CD)
Please let's get back to pictures......arguments in the other area I believe.

Sorry to post this here, but all you have to do is start a yahoo account. It is free and you get 100GB of space. While you are traveling you email the pictures to yourself and delete them from your hard drive. You can always view them while you are traveling by logging back on to yahoo. When you get home you just download them again. Preferably to a portable hard drive that you can hide or lock away if your worried about others looking at them. Copy and paste to this site for portable hard drives. http://www.archos.com/
The Thai authorities have never looked at my laptop, but it happened on the way out of Vietnam once. Luckily they didn't search for images, they simply looked through My-Docs, and My-Pics, which were folders I hadn't used.
One thing though, when the Thai police raid a Westerner's home, the first things they look for are drugs in the cupboards, and obscene images in the PC.

I thought about bringing my laptop but decided instead to invest in a portable harddrive. It about the size of a walkman and takes all the media cards. You just plug your card in, copy and then delete the images from your card.When you get home just connect to your computer and tranfers all your files.
yahoo offers 1 gb free, 2 gb of paid space. gmail offers about 2.5 gb free e-mail space.
there's a free upload site call www.dropload.com. you can upload 100 mb and e-mail yourself the photos. of course you should zip them up first. with so much to upload, you should time it at night while you're asleep.
then i heard about megaupload.com from the china board. never used it myself. check it out yourself.
there's always pgp encryption software for your files.
lastly, it's not illegal to bring into the u.s. photos of nude women. however, you better be sure they are not photos of **** girls. most likely us customs was looking for child porn. if you're caught with one or two sets of nude women having sex, you can always claim they are your girlfriends. no laws broken here. but no country will put up with a ****. stay away from the child porn stuff.

In last months, many officers started to learn the techniques of hiding pictures in PC. They easily find the hidden pictures in these days. IMHO, you use some evidence cleaner, encryption and stealth programs. By using google, you can find these programs.

All very nice, hiding and encrypting partitions, but even a simple proggie like Partition Magic easily finds the hidden bits. Unless the hidden part is very small, and if you're hiding just a few MBs, better send them by email...
Megaupload.com and other share-files-sites really are no better than YahooMail or G-mail. The only difference is that you can send larger files at once.
I have never heard of such a thing. I fly into SFO from SE Asia about 8 or 9 times a year, and have NEVER been asked if I even have a computer with me.

They can look at what they want, do a body search, whatever.

And deleting them from your hard drive does not take them off the hard drive unless you write over that section, the info is still there if you use Norton etc to recover it.

1ball - actually customs can look at anything you bring into the us (anything) - whether they do or not is their choice. they have the mandate and usually they don't use it, but they can (i do fail to understand, though, what they might be looking for since unless there are pix of **** participants, it's not unlawful to have pix)

Another solution the problem is a USB removeable HD. The HD costs around $80-150 and the case is another $30. You can store all the jpgs and movies you want. Just keep it separate from your computer, like in your suitcase.

In august the U.S. customs guy picked a couple of Pantip version copys of Windows XP and Office XP out of my bag and asked me if they were copys. I told him that they probably were and he said it was ok because you get to being in two fakes, but no more.

Agreed. Everytime I travel overseas, my laptop never even gets looked at either in LOS, or the US. Last year, they asked me to open one of my suitcases. I opened my bootleg American Tourister suitcase. The customs officer moved all my bootleg t-shirts, pants, and sneakers, and picked up my spindle of bootleg DVDs, CDs, and PS2 games and said "So you've been shopping!". I told him, yes, and that the selection in MBK is awesome. He put the spindle back and told me to have a nice day. I was so nervous that the drops of sweat were dripping down my face worse than when I was walking on Sukhumvit, but he didn't bother me at all. He didn't even look in my laptop bag where I had the bootleg PC programs. I guess I was lucky. OR more likely, I guess he didn't care.

yes, soon my pictures will be here...remember you are in thailand and you can buy whatever sw you want. a suggestion is that you buy specialized sw that hides/encrypts files/folders/disks at panthip/fortune. look at the collection of utility disks, they are all over them. when you protect file/folder etc., it does not show up on any search, filelist, windows explorer or any application. if you have opened any of the pictures or movies in an application and then hide the file(s)/folders, go back to the application and simply delete the trace.
there is one exception that i have found to this. if you have installed google desktop search (gds), it indexes the files on your computer. if the file is already hidden, no problem. if however, you ever open the file to look at it (movie or pictures), gds may index it, since gds continues to index continually. you can stop indexing with gds for 15 minutes, but if a photo is open during indexing, gds maintains a copy and if you do a google desktop search, there is a thumbnail in the gds index. the only way out of this that i know of is uninstall gds and during uninstall tell it not to keep index (it will ask you that question).
i am sure all of you remember to purge ie temp files, history, and cookies, but a good idea is also to purge delete page files at shutdown (a small change in registry). this takes care of most things that they might look at unless you want to wipe when you delete. bottom line, if you don't wipe, there are always sophisticated tools that can find your items.
but again, point has been made, in usa/canada, pornography/sexy pictures are not a crime as long as nothing indicates **** exploitation (which is deplorable anyway). they are not your moral police. i hide my stuff mostly in thailand because standard pornography, whether personal or downloaded or purchased is against the law.

The best way to keep your masterpieces pictures taken during your trip is to seperate the sd card into your check in luggage in this case, during the inspection at the customs upon your departure, you will be safely passed it and bring it to your home then sharing with us later. this is what I usually did.
Unfortunatly in my recent trip to Bangkok, I have taken a lot of nice gals nude but when I am buring it in my CDRW, I have make a mistakes in along the process and some how the last file that was supposed to be added have apparently over lapped and have wipe out the other earlier file that already in the CD. I did not have any back up since after my previous buring I have deleated them. this is a very tragic situation indeed. can anyone tell me if it is possible to retrieve those fiel that have been over lapped by the last file in the CDRW? some of those services will not upload a full size photo from some of the newer megapixel cameras, my suggestion would be PBase and Phanfare (which will not upload any of my photos from my Canon Rebel XT in RAW+Large JPEG). There is also a device called PhotoChute from SmartDisk, has no display but can upload/download from camera all of the photos on that unit, PhotoChute comes in two version, both have a 20 Gb hard drive and are battery powered.
What about going to a broadband-equiped internet cafe and uploading your material to an on-line repository? There are lots of good providers, sometimes for free. That way you can erase the stuff from the equipment you carry with you, go through custom and download it later in the privacy of your home.

Might be tough finding a fast enough upload link and there would be some editing involved with the files having to be under 100mb but it would certainly get you around our "friends" in customs!

If anybody is worried about customs finding sensitive material in your computer then best thing is to use websites to upload your stuff then download it when you get back. Places like http://megaupload.com/ is one I heard was good. For premium services it may cost you some dollars but that's nothing compared to having to answer a lot of questions to a custom officer or getting a lawyer to defend you.

And I've found that it depends on where you enter the US. Like a lot of guys on this board, I have many pages of entry/exit stamps from Thailand. I've noted an increase in the extent of coverage of the searchs, especially in SFO, not so much at LAX, and notable for this year. In May I came back thru SFO, and was searched for a good 45 minutes, nothing, I mean nothing was untouched, including a cursory search of all of my memory cards for my digital camera. I’m sure they have some criteria for selection and another for the search, who knows, top secret no doubt. I must look the "part".

I start this post with an apology to those that are a wee bit on the sensitive side concerning the term poor folk. If an explanation is required then I humbly submit to you and yours that I use the term "poor folk" to satisfy my Nostalgia for literature by Dostoyevsky and the many times I was required to sleep on the street when I was seventeen years of age. I believe I need no further explanation.
Concerning Customs and laptops, I can say without hesitation that no one of government rank has taken an interest in my computer gear. I've entered America in Texas, California (SFO in July of '05), and Minnesota from various and sundry countries such as Turkey, Romania, Thailand, Poland, and certain places in Central America. I've been searched three or four times in the 40 or 50 entries I've made to date and never ever did anyone ask to check the hard disk on my computer and believe me I do look the type. Anyway, that's my story (believe me or not) and I'm sticking to it.
I hope this is not a new trend I need worry about in the future.

I've been going back and forth between west coast cities and BKK five or six times a year and always carry my laptop. They made me power it up in Vancouver to make sure it wasnt a bomb or something once, other than that no ones ever batted an eye at it.

It's great to see another aficianardo of the art of under-blanket photography.I took these of my now ex TGF last week with a Casio Ex S3 camera. Although taken in near darkness, I had to leave the TV on to cover the flash as she was a very light sleeper.

of course I used a flash, I had to. Many cheap cameras won't reduce the power of the flash or aren't able to deal with the resulting over-exposure on such a short distance so the pic will be over-illuminated.
Check your own digicam, make a pic in total darkness and fire the flash on a very close object Your cam will only be able to focus if it has a focus help light (many digicams have one, but some cheap ones have none).
