Try the Hotel La Amistad. New rooms and great meals. Penthouse can be had for app $110.00 a night and the ajoining bedroom for $50.00 more. Check out there web site; hotelamistad.com, Hotel #506-2258-0021, Fax 506-2258-4900

Make sure you get the rooms in the back of the Hotel as it abuts the Heridia train tracks. walking distance to Cafe Mundo, Sportsmans, Chubbs, Del Ray, Bar New York, New Fantasy, HLH, Morazon Park & Hotel...etc.

Can you please clarify your comment about getting a room at the back of the hotel? I'm assuming what you mean is the front of the hotel abuts the train tracks, so the rooms at the back are preferred? How bad is the train noise? Thanks for all the info.

No. In the past, they have sometimes not allowed two or more guests at once.

Going to SJO in early November. Usually go to the HLH, but some buddies are going to be in the Amistad.

What are the pros and cons of that place?

No charge to bring a guest. Also, Iguana asked about the pros and cons.

I have stayed there only once, and liked it, but the prices have gone up and I think there are better values. Howver...

Pros- Comfortable rooms, Location near the Sportsmans while not being in the mix (can be pro or con), less ovbiously a monger hotel, good service, barrio amon.

Cons-Price point is not a bit high, some noise from train, but not really that bad, no chicas on site (good and bad).

The penthouse is very nice. A good overall vibe.

I can confirm all recommendations about Amistad, stayed there just this past weekend.

I am in the early planning stages for a January or February trip. I thought I might get a decent hotel for around $50 to 70, but when I look at the few where I can get quotes online, it seems like they are much higher.

I guess it's not surprising, but are rates that much higher during the winter? I looked at Dunn's Inn and Sportsmens. La Amistad did not have availability for the dates I plugged in.

Gray line shuttle is telling me it will cost me $15 to take me from the san jose airport to HLH and anotrher $15 back to the air port. Is this reasonable or is a taxi always the best optioin? Will be going there towards the end of the moths for the first time. Thanks for any information!

$ 15.00 for the Greyline shuttle is a very good deal. Most taxi's charge around $ 23-25.00 for this trip....only way you could save any money for this trip would be to find another passenger (probably another guy ) and split the fare with him from airport to town......or if you are that concerned with saving your money....walk down the hill....about 200 yards from front of airport and catch the local public bus to town for about 50 cents USD.

Ask the driver or other passengers when you board the bus...if it is going to " San Jose"...and then ask again when you hit the main part of town - where you should get off the bus. Tell them you want to be close to Morizan Park...which is about a 4 block walk from HLH.

You will be going during the 'high season'....non rainy months...but you can find decent hotels in the $ 40-50 range then - if you look and ask around for info.

I would suggest you check out the Hotel Castillio.....and perhaps get a CRT discount card for a reduced rate at most hotels.

Will be making my first trip to CR in late January (for business), typically I use Holiday Inns so I'm curious if there are any close to the spots I've read about here specifically Sportsmans. Will be traveling with a colleague who shall remain ignorant about my hobby so staying in one of the hobby hotels will not be an option.
Any help or comments are greatly appreciated!

There is a Holiday Inn on the perifery of ground zero, I think it's called HI Aerola or something like that. It is girl friendly with an asteric: it charges a chica fee of $50USD give or take. Nice place with a scenic restaurant on the top floor. It would provide excellent cover for a business trip.

If you're not into paying the chica fee, I would sugget getting a cheap room at the DelRey or a short time room at one of the hotels in the area.

The HI is called Aurola. I stayed there recently. The 24hr security guys are vigilant and strict regarding the "chica" policy -- these guys wear the suits and one ear wired (US secret service style). The bellman probably work in cahoots too.

I got around all this bullsit only because I had a "regular" (GFE) check in with me, and I added her name to my original reservation -- this is not the norm!! So either you pay the $50 (per session) and still endure the procedure of chica producing and showing her ID at reception (I find this a bit nerve-racking especially when on a business trip with work colleagues in the same building) or go to one of the short term hotels nearby. The ladies know all the locations so don't worry about researching them.

I have heard that the short term places are very basic -- cheap and nasty. One in particular is within walking distance of the Del Rey. The DR itself will set you back $40 to $50 for an hour -- so you might as well settle for the HI (once you are sure your buddy is locked away!!).

The other HI chain option is the Crowne Plaza Coribici -- a 10 min cab ride away from the gulch -- also has a chic charge policy, but easier to avoid either by "paying/tipping" the front desk person (if you find a friendly one with a bit of prior chit chat or by slipping passed security by walking past the elevators and go to the lobby bar for a quick beer!! This hotel layout has more going on in and around the lobby, so much easier to slip and slide!

Accommodation in either is top class, so it all depends on how many nights you will be there and how much playtime you have. Remember, even though the Aurola is literally 500 walking steps from the Del Rey, DO NOT walk at night -- the park that separates them is unsafe later in the night. Taxis are plentiful at $2 a ride.

Good luck and post reports. Be safe.

The Aurola is near the Sportmens Lodge -- not walking distance but a $3 cab. Suggestion as a first timer -- start your "research" at the Del Rey, then walk across the road to Key Largo, and if you still need to look around, go to Sportsmens. DR and KL give you the most availability.

There are not too many Gringos who will stay at the either of the Holiday Inns in San Jose. Too expensive for what it's worth, not chica friendly (when you have to pay a $ 50.00 chica fee to bring a gal back to your room - they simply do not want your business or the gals to be there- as it looks bad for the regular customers.)

For about the same money (room rate) you can stay at El Presidente Hotel, which is just about 4 blocks from the center of the Gulch (the area where the Play 4 Pay gals will be found)....and it is big enough that your friend should never know what you are up to in your own room.
The hotel does have a dress code for ladies....so your gal can not look like a 'skanky old ho' off the streets.....but you can pick out a well dressed young lady at the Del Rey Hotel - taxi her back to the Presidente and no one should be the wiser....if you are discreet.

Presidente rooms will set you back around $ 75.00 a night, but they have a great restaurant on premisis, and it's a very nice place....better hotel than the Holiday Inn.

Second option - Stay at the Holiday Inn (downtown San Jose) as you have planned. Then tell your friend you have some business elsewhere - or later at night- go down to the Morazan Hotel ) 1 block away from the center of the Gulch (Del Rey Hotel - Key Largo Night Club). Get a room at the Morazon for about $ 45-50.00....and it is a Hobby Hotel with a fair casino, and restaurant, and is very chica friendly with no extra charges to bring ladies back to you room.

That way you can take care of your business on both counts....and your colleagues should be none the wiser.

Third option - simply walk or taxi (about 3-4 blocks from the Holiday Inn) to the New Fantasy Massage Parlor...pick out a nice gal and get a one hour session with everything for about $ 45.00.....that should put you away from your friend and the hotel for not more than 1 1/2 hours....so he should never find out.....unless you tell.

If you broach the subject with him...it might surprise you that he would be " up for a little whoring too". Good luck !

While it is true that the hotel is big enough for your friend not to notice, just know that between 10 pm to 2 am there is a steady line at the front desk with the girls checking in and out of the hotel. If he does come down during that time, it should be obvious what is happening.

BTW my chica had a blue jean dress on about 2 inches above the knees so I had to take her across the street to buy her a pair of jeans.

Hi All,

If you need a cheap, clean, place to stay with a location right in the middle of all the action, this is your kind of place.

This place has private rooms or a private room with a shared bathroom hostel set up.

Most times you can get a room for about $25. 00 a night and best of all is they have chicas onsite. Yes 24 hours, so you can invite one to your room at any hour and send her away for a good night sleep.

I have a house in San Jose and don't need a hotel but this place is for the guy on a budget that wants to enjoy himself. They don't usually have a person that speaks English to make phone reservations unless you get lucky.

This place is about 5 blocks from the Del Rey.

Enjoy. Link with more information and reviews is attached.

The phone number is 506-2221-0468.

This bus will take you near the bottom of the pedestrian walk and you can walk about 10 blocks or get a cab from there for about 1000 colones or 2 dollars.

That is the cheapest way.

The link for more info aboveBeen there. I never stayed there but did partake for a 30 minute session one time. It was OK for the price.

Basically this is a brothel with a few rooms. So they can call it a "hotel".

FYI. There is also another brothel right across the street from this place with pretty much the same setup.

There you can choose a gal, and take her to 'her room' in the back for like a 30 minuet sessior - . Or you can opt to get a private hotel room for a little more, and take one of the 'brothel gals of your choosing' for an hour session or longer.. Or youcan stay the the hotel part and choose gals from the brothel or bring in your own talent.

I like this 'hotel" that is across the street better than the Marruecos Hotel. It is cleaner with nicer rooms.
The rooms are not great...but for the cheap price they are OK.

There are also a couple of other massage parlors within one block of this location.

That is the cheapest way. The regular bus is the cheapest method of transport from airport to town. As stated below. The Greyline or Interbus shuttle is a good alternative method if you want more comfort, and better service....... as they will deliver you to your hotel, ( and the quoted $ 15.00 price is the standard fee)........and taxi's would be my last choice (if you arrive late at night for example). But a taxi will run you about $ 25. 00.

Sometimes you will see an another gringo who no doubt will be going to downtown SJ. And you can easily share the cost of a tax with himi.

I am not sure what goes through their minds, but you walk into a hot room and they have this little A / C the size of a small microwave oven sitting there like that's going to cool the whole room down. That's like taking an ice cube and throwing it into a bathtub of hot water and expecting it to cool it down.

Are there any hotels over there that have real A / C units that can actually cool the rooms down? That's the hotel that's going to get my business, not the ones with their toaster sized A / C.

My place has ceiling fans only and it is to cold for me during the night to have it on. Their is also a pretty strong breeze most of the time to keep the air moving. Many times a fan does the trick unless you have one of Hanks Hotties. Then sweat may come in handy as lubrication.

The larger deluxe rooms are of course larger and more plush but of course cost more.

The only rooms that I would not really want to stay in are those 3-4 rooms that surround the central common area between the desk and the bar.

Those rooms are OK. But it tends to be a little busy and noisy in those rooms during peak times for the bar crowd. But all that goes away around 11-12 midnight when the bar closed down for the night.

Both are very nice hotels, and are very Chica friendly. And both cater to Gringo Mongers.

These hotels are all in the same general area. About 7-8-9 blocks North from the famous Hotel Del Rey. In the Gulch.

Plenty of chicas hanging at the bar until about 8 or 9 then take a taxi to Hotel Del Rey or walk the 5 blocks or so. Across the street from the Del Rey is Key largo which opens at 10pm and a live band starts about 11pm.

I'm making my 1st rip to San Jose this month and I'm looking for a decent hotel. Sportsmen's Lodge is booked. So I'm thinking about just staying at the Del Rey hotel. I haven't read much on here about it other than people using it for a short time place. I called and its only about $56 a night for a single room or $94 for a deluxe room.

I'm assuming the Del Rey is chica friendly, correct?

Are the rooms nice?

(the reason I'm wondering is because there is not much talk about it aside from short time use).

Thanks, Pipe

Hi All,

Long time reader and first time poster. Getting ready for my first trip to SJ in a few weeks and I am trying to figure out where to stay. I am not cost sensitive so was looking for something around the gulch that is sort of nice. Has anyone stayed at the M Hotel? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

When I get back I will post reiews as I would like to contribute to the forum as much as I consume info.

Thanks!

i'll be staying a few days in san jose early jan 12, first visit. from what i've read the best places to stay is near the ground zero (del ray) in one of chica friendly hotels.

so the usual suspect really, sl, hlh, la amistad, dunn inn, castillo, morazon, hemmingway inn etc. now i read about all their pros and cons on various forums, but what other important thing for me is reliable, descent speed internet connection (wifi or cable, not important).

i need to do a few hours of work on occasions and connect to the office, so in your personal experience which one of these have a good internet connection for this purpose?

(btw, are there any quite cafe / bar i can go in emergency to use their free wifi? (don't even mind paying a bit or buying something for a good connection.)

cheers,

Hi, I recently stayed two nights at the Presendente (sorry about the spelling) it is about two blocks from del Ray, they have a dress code for anybody you bring back, but provided the girls are respectable that is to say boobs covered and not short skirts there is no problem. The hotel has good wifi, I could not get my iPad to work but mac did, I sometimes have this problem, there are also computers in reception you can use. I had a junior suite which was large and very nice. If you are expensing the hotel this would count as a business hotel where you could bring suitably dressed entertainment. I had no problem and saw a couple of other invited ladies for breakfast, which was good by the way. So it's not ideal if you are there to monger but ideal if you are on expenses and want to be close to Del Ray. Hope that helps, I have read other reports that say you can't take girls back, this was not he case when I was there provided the dress code is observed, which, frankly was fair enough.

A hard ethernet jack in the room but I also didn't look very hard. Wifi was fine for me. Also the restaurant across the street believe it or not.

Had decent wifi. One of the weirder things about Costa rica I noticed was the availability of free internet. I just wasn't expecting it. Dom Republic and jamaica could learn from this place.

I spent a week at amistad in October. Thanks for the feedback, now, you should be able to tell me this; I booked the cheapest room they had (Queen Room I think) and they said it's on 3rd floor. Now I know they have no lift, so how many flight of stairs do I have to go up? Because here in UK that is 3 floors up (the first floor is one up over the ground floor!).

From their pictures I think they only have a 3-floor building, so I reckon when they say 3rd floor, they mean 2 floors up from the ground, is that right!

I know it's a good exercise, but I might have to pay extra for the lazy chicas on high heels if they have to go up so many stairs! Or pay the doorman to carry them (and me! LOL).

The balcony penthouse is the tricky one as even though it is numbered in the 300s it is up a spiral staircase that starts on the 3rd floor.

Yes the queen rooms are a small hike. Chicas are use to walking everywhere so it's mainly us gringos who end up huffing and puffing to the top floor. By the end of the trip we were all use to walking so it wasn't so bad. Day 1 it was a bit of a pain. If your truly out of shape they have couches and chairs halfway up the stairs if you need a rest.

Hotel little havana.

A buddy told me about the HLH, that this used to be a bar called Zona Blue. I was just in San José last week but was not able to go by the HLH.

He said that if you stay in a room at the HLH that the girls then only charge US$ 25 per date. Can anyone tell me if this is true? More about this? How good is the selection of girls? How many? The rooms look quite nice on the website, but there is nothing about US$ 25 / girl.

I have RTFF, but there is nothing on here about the HLH in the past 2˝ years!

Plus, I cannot figure out how to use the alleged, 'search this thread' option.

I wonder about that old-style couch half way up the stairs, I thought of being naughty and do a quicky on it one night, but with CR prices the girl would have wanted her $70 and wouldn't even go to the room. They are strictly one-shot wonders down there. Wouldn't worth it !

It's more like if you book a room there you get like 20-25 bucks off a girl. Still not a bad deal and you get to use your own room not the guest sex rooms.

As for selection? It's ok. You'll find better at the delray or sportsman's I think but they are fun and very friendly and you can have a good time with them. They hang out by the bar in the HLH and if you want one you just call them over. It's all very relaxed.

The rooms look quite nice on the website, but there is nothing about US$ 25 / girl. It's true, but I was underwhelmed by the quality of most of the chicas at HLH. I felt that the chicas to be found in New Fantasy (across the street 2 blocks from HLH) and Sportsmen's Lodge (another 3 blocks up the street from New Fantasy) were significantly more attractive than those on offer at HLH. I personally would prefer Sportsmen's, and the option to choose strictly on a Quality / Price ratio, than to feel locked into sub-par looking chicas at HLH because nearly half the value of the room relative to Sportsmens is in getting a discount from the in-house girls.

To each his own, but I feel HLH offers a very good bang for the buck. Rooms are clean amd quiet after 10:00pm since the bar closes at 10. I can actually get some sleep. Girl selection to me is good for the $$ if you are staying at the hotel. It's almost half price of New Fantacy. I also like Sportsmen's, but price may vary of cource depending on your negotiation skill. I doubt many chicas offer the same price point as HLH either. I actually saw a girl who used to work at DR and SL at HLH this trip. A real spinner type. Also, You are really ner "locked in" to chicas there. I went out to SL, DR and KL at night (or day) and brought the chacas over. No issue whatsoever. Just like anything else, I would recommend sticking your head in there and decide for yourself. As for myself, I like staying at a place that I can have selection in-house with outside option and sleep at night when I'm all done.

I see the price is $50, but I'm wondering if it is close to the DR? I'm not afraid to walk so is it in walking distance? Also Chica friendly?

I have read the board, but no real current info about this hotel.

Flight is booked, just need a hotel. I've read a lot of good things about HLH here and I'm strongly considering staying there in a standard room. I have some questions about HLH.

Do the rooms have a safe? If not, where do you suggest securing my passport and cash?

Do they charge for a guest? I've heard both no and $10, so I'm asking.

I've heard they discount heavily if you're staying there. Is $35 still accurate?

Is there a cheap place to eat nearby? Please drop names.

Would you choose the Sportsman, Dunn or Amistad instead? If so, why?

Thanks!

The answer to your first question is yes there are safes in the standard room. As far as the guest policy goes I know its free if you have a CRT card. I've heard they have a $10 per chica fee if you bring one in form outside but I am not sure how strongly they enforce that. You are right if you are staying there its $35 per hour for the girls, however many of the girls will want a $10 to $20 tip for extras such as BBBJ or going down on them, if you session with a girl befor 11 am you get a free breakfest its called there legs and eggs special just ask for it. You can order food at the HLH its not bad but runs anywhere from $5 to $10 to more a plate depending upon what you order. I think you will find $10 to be about the medium price for a plate of food no matter where you go to eat. I did find a decent hole in the wall Chinese place that service the basic dishes like fried rice for $4 a plate, good size serving and you get a glass of lemon water with your meal. As you exit the HLH turn to your left go up to the corner turn left and then just a few paces turn right and cross the street you will see a juice place on the corner next to it is the Chinese place, it is on the path way to the Del Ray. I've never stayed at any of the other places you mentioned so I can't speak on them. I did spend a lot of time hanging out at the SL and picked up a few chicas from there. The reason I never stayed at the sportsmans is because it is usualy booked and the standard rooms are right in the bar.

Hope this helps.

Chris.

Thanks!I think Chris Long answered most of your question, but I will add a couple of things.

First, Go talk to the manager who is usually sitting at the corner of the bar, Boyd. You can't miss him. He is a big bold guy who is very helpful and can answer on almost anything. If you can' find him, fin Greg, another manager. Just ask the bartender to point either of them out.

As for cheap places to eat, HLH has a pretty good selection on food. Meatball sub, Philly, Reuben, etc. Very good in my opinion. Also, very close to HLH, there is Soda Peru. Very good, large portion, and cheap. Very good lunch spot. Just ask anyone at HLH, they can point you to the right direction. Little more upscale, but there is a French restaurant catty corner from HLH. Pretty good food there too. Up the hill towards Sportsman, Hotel Castillo has kind of like Asian fusion place (I think this is where CL is is talking about). Sportsman has decent food there also.

Would I choose some other hotel? Not me. Sportsman has very good rooms and there are girls at the bar. Courtyard rooms are noisy as it is right next to the bar though. I've never stayed at Amistad, but I heard the noise from train is unbearable at some of the cheaper rooms. Dunn, No. Not my own experience, but I've heard some horror stories like double booking etc. It's hard to beast the party atmosphere and $35 chicas for the guest at HLH, IMHO.

Hi,

I am planning on going to San Jose in next month for Dental work. Plan on staying a while though. 3-4 weeks, but I need a cheap but safe place to stay at first as I will likely be recuperating and doped up from meds. I would like to stay at the Sportsman or DelRay. But at first, I have to get the dental work. Haven't chose a dentist. They want $450 at the V. A. To simply extract the tooth! Any dentist recmomendations I would be grateful for.

The staff there are great. It seems to be an old converted mansion, with an addition of a 2-story open walkway motel out back, in front of which is an open courtyard with lots of trees and a bar. The owner seems to want to spend the absolute minimum on capital improvements though, and the beds and bed spreads leave something to do be desired.

Does anyone have information on hostels in Costa Rica. They seem really cheap and sufficient. Are any of them chica friendly? Are they walking distance to the gulch.

Thanks

Don't stay in a hostel. They are not chica friendly and way more awkward to bring someone back. If you want somewhere as cheap as a hostel and close to the gulch stay at the Morazon. Its like 35-45 a night and chica friendly.

The Del Rey I heard has deals on, maybe check with them as well. Hostels are a no go though from my experience.

Hey guys I was thinking of staying at La Amistad however I am unsure as to how awful the train is. Does it only blare once early in the morning or is it a constant thing? Is it really annoying? On a scale of 1-10 how annoying would you rate it?

But I can count how many times I've stayed since the commuter train to Heredia started running because that was one time.

I will be in San Jose in October and only standard rooms at the courtyard are available, any recommendation if this should be avoided due to noise level and if not can you share your experience if loss of privacy affected your enjoyment.

During the day and evening it's like your room is part of the bar. If you are concerned about privacy it could also be an issue as people tend to watch you and your date as your going to your room. Some of the guys that sit around the bar will probably look at their watches and then make bets on how long the girl will be in your room.

Train starts at 6 am, three / 4 times an hour and is 2 car train mostly. Amistad has hired guys to help train go smoothly thru crossings which certainly minimizes honking in morning. Not to worry at all if you are in the back end of hotel.

Info needed if you can help. I'll be going back to San Jose probably next month. I usually stay at the Del Rey but would like to try another location as I have a chance to hook-up with a couple of local ladies that may not want to be seen in the Del Rey so I'm looking for a chica friendly 'regular' hotel.

Does anyone have any info on the Sleep Inn's chica friendliness ($102 per night!) or the Best Western that's about 5 blocks away ($60 per).

Any help would be appreciated.

Can't say anything about the Sleep Inn, but the BW is not Friendly. Go to Amistad (just there 2 weeks ago) as the previous guy is right . They have hired crossing guys to not have the horn going. Call and ask for the Cash price and you will be happy!

If you are talking about the downtown Best Western, I have stayed there many times starting sometime in the 90s and it has always been girl friendly. The last time I was there was March of 2011 and no issues with bringing ladies back. I always booked for 2 and never paid any extra fee for my guest. I plan to be in San Jose again soon and will likely stay a few nights there again. Although the place is starting to show its age. When were you there?

As far as the Sleep Inn goes its a nice American style hotel. It is also right beside the action which is a benefit. I have stayed there about 6 times and I really like it, its clean comfortable and quiet, kind of nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Del Rey. That being said the chica fees are outrageous at $35 per chica.

I have booked a penthouse on the west side of Hotel La Amistad, no chica fees and its really nice and comfortable.

I'm required by my schedule to stay at Hotel Chistine. Is there any nearby chica action in that area. Is the Christine chica friendly? Also, are any of the hotel maids available for some extra's? I've never seen anyone mention hotel maids as a source on here, but in the states I've had a little luck. I'm pretty much tied to a few blocks radius of that area, but would love to experience some of what I read about here.

Thanks for the info that I got from you guys on San Jose hotels. I had finally decided on La Amistad as my place to branch out and I recently returned from C. R. After a four night stay. I had a pretty nice time. The room was a little smaller than I'd expected at the $69 per night level. The rooms at the Del Rey are obviously larger but when you throw in free breakfast; free phone calls back to the US; free laundry service; and no chica fees, you definitely get more bang for your buck at La Amistad. And if you feel the need to pick your chica from the field at the Del Rey, it's a 10-15 min walk away. And I heard from a couple of my fellow mongers staying at the hotel that they did just that. What was even more surprising is that the Sportsman's Lodge is right around the corner from L. A. And during one of my trips thru their inner court there were several very hot ladies on the premises, there for the choosing. 'Fantasy' was also a few blocks away and had some nice ladies on hand.

I met some cool guys from other ares of the USA. (Fellow mongers) , and hung out with a couple of them, off and on. The staff was pretty helpful. One of the clerks, I think it was Carlos (?) even printed out a local map for us to use as we explored the area.

I can't really report on the going prices for chicas as I already had a chica lined up from a previous visit and she hooked me up with a couple of her friends as requested by me. I paid them all $70 for a no-rush session starting with a BBBJ and I gave my original chica only $50 at our last meeting, and she was happy to get that. Times are hard in S. J! But during my next visit, I'll be pulling a few chicas from the surrounding venues.

Later Dudes!

Finding the right hotel can be tricky if you've never been to San Jose. Here's a brief summary of the local hotel landscape as of Feb. 2013. As with everything, YMMV.

1. Hotel Amistad – This is a very well managed hotel. Girl friendly, excellent rooms, a managerial staff that genuinely cares about your experience, and excellent breakfast. Measures have been taken to minimize or eliminate the noise from the nearby train. TL and CRT members, as well as long-time clients enjoy a discount.

2. Mona Lisa – This place has the brightest of futures. An upscale option on the end of gringo row. Opposite side of the gulch from the Rey. Very nice rooms, elegant lobby, reasonably priced. This place is both girl friendly and eager to please. They are going through the new hotel learning curve, otherwise they'the be number one. Adding Guy Grand as customer service manager certainly didn't hurt. TL and CRT members enjoy a 10% discount on room, food and beverage.

3. Hotel Little Havana – This is a boutique hotel with nice rooms and a very friendly environment. It has more promotions than is humanly possible to remember, and a decent line-up of talent in the bar on most days. Reasonably priced to boot. TL and CRT members enjoy varying discounts.

4. Sportsmen's Lodge – This is a well run hotel with a great bar scene. While it's a competitor's headquarters, it still warrants a worthy mention for the effort ownership puts forward to provide a memorable stay. Downsides are the courtyard rooms are too noisy for any kind of pleasant sleep, the girls crowd the computers in the RFM room behind the bar, and the service can be a little slow. CRT members enjoy a 10% discount on room, food, and beverage.

5. Hotel Cocal – This place made short work of the Beetle Bar. With a well run hotel, condo options, a lively poolside bar scene, and casino to entertain its clients, this place has the right mojo for the long term. TL members enjoy a 20% discount on rooms.

6. Sleep Inn – This place is overpriced. But it is clean and centrally located. Charges a $35 guest fee, and runs about $90 per night for single room occupancy.

7. Hotel Freebird – This is not so much of a hotel, as a private home with guest rooms. A couple nice rooms, and some other clean rooms that share a bathroom. The owner is very helpful in providing a great experience. High cleanliness standards are maintained. Drawbacks are shared bathrooms and location away from gringo row. TL and CRT members are offered a discount.

8. * Inn – This place is a testament that a nice hotel and bad management still equals a bad hotel. Clean rooms next to an empty, albeit very nice restaurant and bar with terrible service. You can be the only diner, with 3 waitresses, and still not get a drink in 20 minutes. And you'll have to wait until they finish their conversation to get your change. CRT members are offered a 10% discount after a little arguing.

9. Hotel Hemingway – This place has seen better days, and not lately. Tired, old rooms, cheap beds, cheap everything. The place needs to be completely remodeled, but as long as there are guys that can be talked into paying their entire stay upfront, they will carry on. TL and CRT members are offered a 20% discount.

10. Hotel Castillo – If you take a nice hotel, and ignore doing any kind of upkeep or repairs for several years, you have the Hotel Castillo. This place was once very nice. Years of neglect and indifference have taken their toll. A $35 room that is marked up to $69 can be discounted by 25% for TL and CRT members.

11. Hotel Del Rey – This hotel is kept alive by its lobby and bar scene. Every inch of the hotel shows signs of repeated wear and tear. Tired, worn out rooms, a staff of formerly attractive barmaids who generously buy themselves top shelf liquor (kool aid) on your tab, this group of chubby sharks can't be bothered to clean tables between clients. I haven't had a drink inf over 20 years, and I've had these jackals insist that I ordered multiple shots of patron when I disputed a bar tab. With the Mona Lisa and Sportsmen's Lodge offering a night scene, there's really no 'non-sheep' reason to go there.

12. Hotel Morazan – I would stay at the Morazan if the trannies woke me up and told me I couldn't sleep in the park. This place is an absolute dump. It's proximity to the Rey is the only thing keeping it from being completely empty. Truly the trailer park of the gulch.

"Our true enemy has yet to reveal himself." (what movie?)

I have no idea who bought it. I'm guessing the new owners would like to keep it that way, especially from me.

I could be wrong, but I just don't see Bill (SL) buying it and keeping it a secret. He's well liked and respected, and if anything, his reputation would help its progress. Unless he's worried about the perception of owning CRT and showing a media bias towards SL. Not sure. I also don't see the Del Rey crew working and playing well with others. So my guess, and that's all it is, is that the new buyers were sold the site off of inflated or outdated numbers in the hopes of using it for cash flow.

I recently vetted CRT for a different group of possible buyers and gave my analysis and valuation. I noticed a couple weeks ago that the analytics had been uninstalled, then there was a new admin, and Tommy's email came back from a different ip address with a different writing style.

When I did the diligence, the traffic analytics they gave me and the google analytics I installed for the month I was valuing the site were drastically different, the actual traffic according to google was a fraction of what was suggested. The registration claims they submitted were based off of the life-span of the site, not current membership.

I had my differences with Tommy, but I generally liked the guy. His members had a loyalty to him that all of us hope to have. I'm looking forward to a worthy competition from this new lot. Should be a fun year.

Any idea who the new boss (es) are? Big John from the Del Ray? The Sportsmans Lodge guys? Both? Inquiring minds want to know.

ThanksI agree that the Holiday Inn is probably the most convenient family hotel. It is diagonally across Park Morazan. Also, if you like you can get a 4-hour room at the Hotel Morazan, but I don't know what they charge. If you like good seafood, then then try La Princesa Marina en Sabana. I like the medium whole sea bass and the ceviche. Right now, a taxi is about 3000-3200 each way, unless you get a bandito (like we did on the return trip, but we knew the route and confronted him.)

Work is planning to set me up in the Crowne Plaza Corobici. I searched the forum but did not find much.

Hopefully someone can provide some feedback. Any issues bringing a chica for TLN?

Any action around? Clubs? If not, how far by taxi to Del Rey?

Mona Lisa or HLH may be a better option. Though these may not be possible with work.

Any input would be appreciated.

If you were creative and thought like a latino, maybe you could bribe hotel personnel such that it appeared you stayed in Hotel X while actually staying in Hotel Y. Paying for a fake invoice to submit with your travel claim, or something. Nothing is ever as it appears to be in Latin America, so think outside the box and see what you can come up with.

Thank in advanceSome people walk from DR to wherever, but it's really not wise to do it. Why take a chance for only c1000? Also, chicas will not walk all the way from DR to LA in the middle of the night (or during the day time in those high heels).

As for see, some hotels will let you make reservation without see if you are an established client, but most will not not first time customer. That's really just a standard practice in hotel industry.

I'm looking for a medium priced hotel in the middle of the action. Walking distance to the girls and basic food. Girls at the hotel and near by. Would sportsman and delray be my choices? Which one would be better? Why? Sportsman no chica charge to the room? Delray is 10 per girl? Thanks.

I've stayed at the Hemingway for $30 / night and it meets all of your requirements, AT. Jonesie doesn't recommend it. Says the beds are not good but they were fine for me. The breakfast was quite good. There is a busty chica who works next door at the Castillo who was a real good time. Her name is Carolina.

Another discount club...An excellent report, but there are some changes or mistakes.

Best Western. Definitely not chica friendly. Corporate policy explicitly against "sex tourism"

Don Carlos Hotel. Definitely not chica friendly. Guests are almost exclusively families. I had my parents stay here when they visited me in Costa Rica.

Hostel Marruecos. Closed a long time ago.

Aurola Holiday Inn. The fine for unregistered guest is $70.

The only other thing I would say is that the Vesuvio is terribly overpriced. The walls are paper thin and in need of a serious remodeling. The rooms should be priced around $15 and not $45 or $70.

Can any monger give me an idea of the Hampton Inn & Suites is anywhere close to any MP's and or clubs. Looking to go sometime in April and I know Sportsman Lodge is the best for a newbie, but since I have 1000's of points in Hilton hotels, I wanted to get the room for free for about 5 nights. Any help from experienced mongers would be appreciated. The place is on Airport Blvd and site says .4 from the "city center." (whatever that means). Thanks!Hey Professor!

I know it's been a really long time but I was wondering if you had any luck with this post? I wanted to stay at either the Hampton Inn or Doubletree by Hilton because I too can get free nights but was wondering if the distance is too far?

Thanks,

YG

I was wondering how your stay at the Hampton Inn was? I too have a ton of Hilton Honors points and wanted to stay at a Hilton property for free. Does anyone have any experience at the Doubletree or Hampton Inn? Google Maps says it's about 15 minutes away from Del Rey, which I believe is in the heart of the mongering world in San Jose from all the reports I've read?

Any thoughts fella's? This will be my first mongering trip below the US, since I always hit up Asia.

Thanks,

And $20-30 cab ride. Use your miles at the downtown Holiday Inn Aurola great location centro, very nice place but not chica friendly, and play around at the places where you get your jollies at their location, or there are a few short term room places. The girls know.

Within 3/4 square mile for the most part and you'll be in it.I checked the rooms in the mona lisa. Yes the 50 dollar special is a good deal. Only issues is the wifi signal is very weak in the corner rooms. Normal rate is $70 but since they just opened you have to email that person for the $50 deal. The rooms are clean and the bathroom is big. Only issue is they kept all the old furniture when it was the Clarion, old TV sets, and tables. The beds were firm and you can tell all they did was clean the carpets and painted the walls. For 50 bucks I would stay, but if charged $70 I would stay across the street at the Dunn Inn.

There are certain hotel expectations at certain price points. At least the Dunn Inn you get free breakfast and their wifi is strong thru the whole property.

Hello all first post,

This is my first time to Costa rica and I am staying at the Double Tree. I was wondering if it is too far from everything or can I make it work to places like the del ray and such? Also if I were to find a girl, would I not be able to bring her back to that hotel and have to pay for a room near by? Ty for the info!

Also if I were to find a girl, would I not be able to bring her back to that hotel and have to pay for a room near by? Ty for the info!Hum-m-m, sure where it is, but it can't be within walking distance of the action areas. Since you've already committed to the reservation, you just ask when you check in, if there is an extra charge for a guest. After you are there for a day or two, just look for something more convenient to your needs. Some years ago, I mistakenly book a week and half at a bed / breakfast, Casa Morazan instead of Hotel Morozan. I only had one special friend, and while it was a little awkward for the lady to have to let us in at night, or sleep late while they were serving lunch, I stayed three days, then told her that I had met some old friends and was moving with them. She just smiled and said, I understand, but you are always welcome here". I'm thinking, at $90 a night, I guess so.

As I posted before in my past TRs, I always had fun at HLH. Now, I do understand they had to make the place smaller because of some business stuff, but the fun went out the window with it. I was there last week and on average, I saw about 4 girls average. No partying going on. Place looked depressing. Geez. 180 turn from just less than half year ago. I heard now some other people bought the place (a couple from the States is what I heard). Sad state of affair. I guess I'll be looking for a new "home".

I'm returning to Costa Rica for the first time since 2008. I've enjoyed staying at Hotel Presidente in the past but I understand it's no longer girl friendly. I've reserved a room at El Maragato which is in the same general area in the Gulch. The rate is so reasonable, I'm wondering if it's now run down. There are some old positive reviews on here. Any feedback would be helpful.

Only problem is $35 chica fee. Get round that if you have a regular, make your reservation on line for 2, meet her and check in together. Third floor rooms facing the Colonial (south) nad near the center of the hotel are quietest.

The rest of them re old and not built as hotles so you get the stgreet noise. Sleep Inn is set back off the streets except the N, E, and W Side rooms so don't get those rooms, stay south central 2 floor or higher, won't hear a thing.

Hi,

Just wanted recommendations of cheap hotels that are chica friendly in San Jose.

I saw the other posts but they were getting close to a year old so just want to check.

I was thinking of Hemingway Inn or Hotel Diana Inn but just wanted to make sure you can bring some one back with low or no fee.

If you know any others, I'm open to suggestions.

CheersSJ has no shortage of cheap hotels with no chica fees. I would cross hotel Diana off. Hemingway is cheap, and old-maybe rustic to be fair. A lot of guys tolerate the Morazon. I haven't read this entire thread in a while but I am sure all the well known cheapies in our usual areas are listed, as well as the medium priced. If they are cheap in SJ, they are so for a reason. Spend $20 more a night and you'll enjoy your trip a lot more.

CheersHemingway is Chica Friendly, I stayed there and they charged $10 chica fee, make her leave her Cedula at the front desk and that is a good thing so the girl does not drug you or steal from you. The beds at Hemingway are not that comfortable, thin mattress, no box spring, just a platform with a thin mattress on top but you get what you pay for in Costa Rica.

Did a search and could not find any real reports about New Balmoral, joiner fees, chica friendly.

What I have found indicates that it is good to go, but just checking cause I have never been to CR.

Going over the super bowl weekend with a bunch of friends who are flying in, so far we are spread over several hotels because of the "busy weekend"

Anyone who is going to be there can PM, there will be 6 or 7 of us looking to party.

even though the outfit is an individual choice and it reflects a personal taste, the way a guest dresses generates an impact over the hotel's image. with the intention of keeping a sober and nice ambiance for all of our dear guests, in the public areas of the hotel, we have established a dress code with simple and specific parameters to follow.

each person and each set of clothes are different, so the decision about proper or not will be on the front desk manager at the moment. this decision will be final and the management will reserve the right of admission in particular cases.

guests.

we ask our guests to please follow these simple requests, while in our public areas and el patio restaurant:

1) always wear shoes.

2) avoid shirts without sleeves or revealing clothes. women must avoid very short skirts or open front shirts.

3) do not wear brilliant, transparent clothes or swimming suits.

4) avoid clothes with racist or discriminating messages.

visitors.

a visitor is a person which has been authorized for a guest to visit the guests' room for a short period of time. all visitors in order to access the hotel, must fully comply with the dress code and must be registered on the book of visitors of the hotel, in order to do this, the visitor needs a valid id, it means, the passport or cedula in case of a local person. **** can register only in their parents' companion with the valid documentation. no ****.

visitors can access a room without their parents even with the guests' approval. for safety reasons, only one visitor.

at the time is allowed per room.

if a visitor wants to go into a room or even sleep overnight, there will be an extra charge of $30 plus tax per night and hotel policies must be compiled.

against sexual exploitations.

at balmoral hotel, we believe that sexual exploitation of human beings, infringes the fundamental goals of tourism so we have a commitment against sexual exploitation of kids and teenagers under the 7899 law.

the hotel will cancel any agreement with companies that somehow sponsor or promote sexual exploitation. also, the hotel reserves the right to cancel reservations for passengers that with their inappropriate behavior, affect the service to other guests.

thank you for your comprehension and cooperation. management

I don't think the Balmoral is chica friendly and hasn't been for some time. Great location. Maybe the remodel, now quite a while ago helped, but I never thought much of the place before. Stayed there once. Common doors and paper thin walls are always bad for sound and my hunch the remodel didn't change that. Call the desk and ask them, it ain't like they're going to be shocked by the question.

Try the Mon Lisa, re-opened, no chica free, much newer then the Balmoral, close to the action. Popular with the guys that are chasing tail.

I would like to stay at the Marriott because I get points there. Can I check in with a girl I have already met and stay there together? I understand they will not want random hook ups coming in every 10 minutes.

If you know her full name, include that in your reservation and it should go smooth.

This year was a tough year for Costa Rica tourism. Even the well run hotels had to innovate to stay on top. Here's a list of the top monger hotels as I see it. I'the consider mine a pretty educated opinion, but at the end of the day, it is only my opinion. Feel free to have your own.

1. Hotel Amistad. Still. It was already a well run hotel with a great restaurant. This year, Matt introduced the all inclusive concept and it's a hit. Sunday and Wednesday hosts great deals for the frugal gourmets not staying at the hotel. Still the best place to stay, and now at the best price.

2. Hotel Cocal. Nice hotel in Jaco that's ground zero for the hobby on the beach. Nice rooms, great restaurant, boutique casino, and very lively bar scene at night. One can usually find 100+ girls at the pool bar on any given night.

3. Sportsman's Lodge. There are two very different experiences one could have staying at this hotel. The first being the mansion wing of this hotel that offers an upscale, quiet accommodations close enough to the bar to be convenient, and far enough to enjoy serenity. The second being the courtyard rooms that would put this hotel further down the list. Courtyard / bar side rooms are generally noisy, a light to moderate sleeper will hear the last bar patrons retire, and the first breakfast patrons chat. Lively bar scene with between 12-30 girls walking around depending on the hour.

4. Balmoral. This is an upscale option that charges a guest fee for chicas. Otherwise it would be number 2 on this list. Plush rooms and a nice restaurant.

5. Zona II. This hotel is only a 4 suite hotel. The nicer rooms from the defunct Little Havana. Has a downstairs bar and cigar room. This is a hotel review, so I'll leave it at that.

6. Dunn Inn. This hotel has nice rooms and a nice restaurant. Poor management makes the place a ghost town. Such a shame.

7. Del Rey. This is not a nice hotel. At all. But, it's still the default choice and ground zero for the hobby in San Jose. Shouldn't be, but it is.

8. Sleep Inn. This is a decent hotel that's proximity to the Rey makes it relevant. Charges a chica fee. If you've got the cash (it's $35 per chica) , and want a cleaner / newer room than the Rey, this is your place.

9. Scores. The more modest rooms of the old Little Havana. Beautiful new bar, same rooms. Place looks great, so why is it still empty?

10. Mona Lisa. This was a great idea, with awful execution. The wrong turns are too many to count.

11. Hotel Castillo. Some wonder out loud how this place is still open. I wonder how it's still standing. Another year of neglect makes a once charming hotel into yet another lost opportunity.

12. Hotel Morazan. I do have to respect one thing about this place, they don't pretend to be anything more than a barely inhabitable dwelling that markets to the dregs.

My first time to CR, exciting. It is under new mgmt but a guy posted on another board in December he didn't have a problem with the girls and no fee. But for roughly the same money, I'd go to Hotel Mona Lisa, better location, def chica friendly, much nicer place, close to the places you'll be going to. It has 90 rooms so unless you are going SuperBowl week-end, you should get in.

From the looks of this place, I don't think it's going to be chica friendly. Outside chance it's chica tolerable.

Scores' rooms are only $30 these days, and they're chica friendly. The rooms are decent, the bare is new and nice. The MP part of the deal is lacking, but at $30, whatever.

Hi all,

Seeking your wise recommendations on a clean (not depressing) hotel at the center of action in SJ.

I'm looking for something in the range of $50 to $70.

Have a current offer from La Amistad for $70 but I "feel" it's too much for La Amistad and it's not at the center of action.

Of course this is all considering "no guest fee" policy.

Thanks in advance,

Happy mongering!

There's no free lunch in this area. If you just want a chica friendly hotel in the gulch on the cheap, the Morazan is that. But it's a shit hole. The Amistad is probably the nicest, but it's at least 200 meters from the Rey. SL is ok, but the decent rooms aren't cheap, and the cheap rooms aren't decent. And it's not much closer than the Amistad.

You'd have to be on special juice to stay at Sportsmen's Lodge. Often touted as the best thing on earth by the SL bots who can't see the forest from the trees other then kissing the owner, bill, who also owns a board like this but CR dedicated. You ain't missing much. Why am I down on the SL? Loud. Shit rooms. Shit food. Rooms are way, way overpriced. Everybody knows your biz because of the way rooms are entered. Girls on the premises but rarely have I seen anything more than a 6 or a very nice 9 but she's weighing in at 900 lbs. But, it is the best place to watch gringo sports and to meet like minded gringos, if that interests you.

But stay at Sportsmens Lodge? No friggin way, an overpriced former who knows what dressed up to be a "hotel" but really a glamorized frat house. Hahahaha. No, no, no.I agree completely about the Sportsmen's Lodge In San Jose. The place is the most overrated over priced hotel in Central America. The rooms prices are a rip off. The food is terrible and the talent level stinks. Other than watching a ballgame with friends the place is useless.

Hello Gents.

Just got back last week from San Jose and Jaco Beach trip. We stayed 2 nights at San Jose and 3 nights in Jaco Beach. After reviewing all of the information on this board we decided to stay at the Hotel Amistad due to its positive reviews and the all inclusive aspect of the hotel that can be added for only $10 more. I must say that overall the Hotel Amistad is a pretty good value for the money, and guest friendly. They charge from $89 to $129 for queen, king, studio, and penthouse sized rooms. The queen and the king rooms are the same size; but you will pay $10 more for the room with the king size, but for those who like larger rooms I would go with a studio or penthouse room. The hotel is kept up in decent condition but is an older hotel; however all of the no guest fee hotels in San Jose are older. The all inclusive aspect of the Hotel Amistad means that you can order anything off of the menu in the restaurant downstairs and eat there anytime for breakfast from 7 am to 10 am, and lunch or dinner are served from 12 pm to 11 pm. You may go to their website and see what's on the menu but they offer pastas, shrimp and fish dishes, risottos, meats, and chicken menu including appetizers, soup, salad, and order as much as you can eat. Also, you are allowed unlimited soda, bottled water, well drinks as often as you would like from the restaurant and bar there. So, if I figured the cost out, it would have run as least $35 to $40 bucks in food and drinks if I ate in local restaurants with comparable food and drinks, and you have the added convenience of not having to decide where to eat, taking a cab, etc. The rooms were very basic in decor, somewhat spanish traditional style, and had free WiFi, air conditioning, comfortable beds, clean, and are probably 3 star quality, whereas Del Rey looked 2 star. I did tour rooms at the Sportsmens Lodge and would consider them comparable or a tiny bit nicer and cheaper without the all inclusive starting around $65 for a basic room, so even if you had to eat outside, it would still be a good value. For those that want the nicest rooms in the Gulch area, book the Sleep Inn but be prepared to spend around $120 per night and add $25 for your guest / joiner fee.

One other excellent thing I found to be awesome at the La Amistad is that they will offer a free cab ride to Jaco if you are returning to stay there or pick you up from Jaco if you are staying there. So we got a free ride and back to Jaco which would have cost us at least $160 ($80 each way was cheapest we were quoted by taxi drivers to Jaco). The hotel is managed by a nice guy named Don and he is American so that showed in the customer service aspect as the staff addressed all of our requests and were very friendly. So all in all, I would strongly recommend La Amistad as a good option in San Jose which has few options for nice hotels which are girl friendly.

Hello!

I used to stay at this lovely hotel in beautiful, downtown zona roja. It has been quite some time since I have visited. I see that the name has been changed to Garden Court Express San Jose Downtown, but their reservation app isn't working. Anybody know que pasa? Has it been sold and subsequently gone out of business?

They have a lovely view of the mountains and would love to stay there again.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I was in San Jose late July. This hotel recently changed owners and some of the old staff is gone now. I believe that the new owners are from Venezuela. They have made some changes, such as remodeled the casino (fewer machines) and remodeled second floor dining area, with an open air section. We were having lunch there around July 25th when a shocks from a small earthquake shook the building. Needlessly, in spite of the nice open air setting, we moved further inside. I understand that nothing else has changed, but guys are monitoring, in case you know of any other recent changes.

Stayed three nights in a King bed room, upgraded to room with jacuzzi tub and sauna at no extra cost. Nice accommodations, clean room. Went with all-inclusive for $99 nightly and enjoyed the service, the room and the three meals a day with beers and mixed drinks. Great location for mongers and met some really nice guys. Amistad does not allow chicas to mingle freely at the bar to give its guests some peace away from the groping hands of other places. La Amistad is a safe haven for us mongers. I do wish they'd replace the thinnest towels, but the service, the food and the helpfulness of the staff made up for the towels.

Never a problem with bringing a chica. You can drink or dine with her at the bar (you pay for her meal / drinks) and she leaves her cedula at the front desk. Taxis are almost always readily available there and if you do have to wait, it's a short time. Sportsmans is about a block and a half away.

I will consider going back to Amistad. The one downside. The damn train tracks and blare of the horn in the morning. Cab fares to HDR are ridiculously low. So cabbing is not a big deal at all.

I recommend the la Amistad. Enjoy!

Unfortunately a pretty fair amount of money was stolen from the safe in my room. Wasn't a chica. Someone with a spare key. I thought about using the hotel safe when I checked in but did not quite have enough money to want to hassle with it. I think this probably happened this morning because they did not take all of it, only about half, and probably hoped I would just stick the envelope in my pocket and not count it. But, it was obviously light, so I counted it. Didn't have much time to do anything about it other than tell management, since I had to go to the airport (and then my driver's clutch failed before we got two blocks, not my lucky day). Also, if I called the cops I am sure they would focus on the two chicas I had in my room but they could not have done it. Talking to a guy who stays there all the time, he says this happened a couple of years ago as well. I usually don't use hotel safes, because somebody has a key, and hide the money in the room, but there really weren't any great hiding places. So kind of a sour ending to the visit.

Brothers, beware!

Unfortunately a pretty fair amount of money was stolen from the safe in my room. This is the first time I have read about anything like this happening at any supposedly reputable hotel in any destination to which I have traveled. We were just talking about this very thing in one of the Thailand threads. You had some very bad luck there man. But knowing that this has happened, I would never, ever stay at the Mona Lisa. Not ever! But, I still have no hesitation to use the in-room safe in a reputable hotel. I've been traveling and doing that for decades, and I will do it again. Just not at the Mona Lisa Hotel in San Jose, Costa Rica! Thanks for telling us about your misfortune. I think a lot of guys would have been too embarrassed to tell.

Dickhead
01-27-15, 05:35
Why would I be embarrassed? I saw the great big sign saying "use the in room safe at your own risk. " I also thought of the risk of using the hotel's safe; they tell someone, "Hey, this guy is carrying a fair amount of cash," and then I get robbed on the way to the airport, or something. I remember several years ago some room service waiter got caught and his method was to rub a little grease from his hair on the keypad and then figure out the code the person had punched in. He got away with it for quite a while. I thought of the quantity of money I had, more than usual but not a fortune. And, I made my decision. Once I did not find a good hiding place, I could have gone back down and put it in the safe. I could have carried half of it with me. I could have done a bunch of things. The thief should be ashamed but I don't feel embarrassed.

Actually, it was kind of weird. I wasn't even really that pissed. Not sure why. But, between getting robbed, having the taxi break down, and then getting to the airport and realizing I had left my sweatshirt, a nice one, in the cab because I was a nice guy and helped him push it off the road, uphill, it wasn't a great day. I have lost lots and lots of sweatshirts, sweaters, and long sleeved shirts but I've never had a taxi break down and never had problems in a hotel.

If you want embarrassing, I once left about $600 worth of Argie pesos in the dowel rod in the closet of an apartment I moved out of in Spain. Didn't realize it for weeks. This hit was about the same magnitude, adjusted for inflation, but I don't think I did anything that stupid. I guarded the key assiduously.

Now, is the ML a "reputable" hotel? Not really, and I would not have characterized it as such even before this happened.

Anyone considering booking at the Mona Lisa should be aware that I had $1,700 stolen from my locked safe in my locked room in January. I'm not saying don't stay there but you might want to use the hotel safe or hide your money in your room, versus using the in-room safe. Obviously this was an employee or ex-employee. I did not discover this until I was leaving and couldn't do much about it, although the hotel did comp my entire stay which amounted to close to half of what was stolen.

Assman12If the trains bother you, try requesting a room on the west side, third floor. It's much quieter up there than on the east side.

La Amistad keeps getting better with repeat visits. My only complaint is, if you bring a girl in there and want to order drinks or food around 8-9 at night, they have one or two people waiting on the whole crowd, and service is slow to non-existent. Avoid that crowded time and you should be fine.

I have been a big fan and supporter of La Amsted in the past. Well now, I am going to flame them a little bit. Below is the exact text from their website:

"We have 6 penthouses, all unique in design and size, newly renovated featuring King beds with memory foam mattresses, mini refrigerator, electronic safe, free local calls, HBO, Cinemax, air conditioning. Rooms include a two person 28 jet jacuzzi, personal dry sauna, bar and balcony. Family room with sofa and 40" flat screen television and separate 30" in the bedroom. ".

Well, it's not true, first is that not all of the Penthouses have a jacuzzi. Which was the ENTIRE reason I booked a Penthouse. When I complained I got the dear in the headlights look. Whatever I'm only there 3 nights. The whole point was I didn't need a giant freaking room, I just wanted a fucking jacuzzi. Secondly, not all the rooms have a flat screen TV, which isn't the biggest deal except that I didn't have analog inputs for my video camera. A flat screen would have had digital inputs. Thirdly, they advertise "MONEY EXCHANGE", but never have any money to exchange, they suggest that you go down to Sportsman Lodge. That offers a much worse rate than the rate that La Amsted advertise's.

I love the all inclusive deal they offer, but I was very displeased with the way I was treated. On my next trip I now have to weigh my dissatisfaction with them versus the benefit to me of staying at their hotel. If I stay there again, I will most certainly will not pay until after I see the room.

Does anybody have a hotel recommendation for a chica friendly hotel in San Jose? I'm not staying at HDR, it's run down, over priced, and the $11.00 joiner fee is ridiculous! Sportsman has never impressed me, seems over priced for what you get. Mona Lisa worries me because of the multiple reports of theft from the room safes.

I don't really want to stay at LA Amsted again. But it seems like there is no place that has better value.

I was thinking about staying at Zona II for a couple of nights but I'm not sure about staying at Zona II. That whole don't shit where you eat mantra.

Decent reviews on hotels.com etc. Price is right, just not sure of chica friendly policy. I'm considering staying there in the future, would be interested in hearing anyone's experience staying there. My fave place, the Hotel Europa closed down the night I showed up last November. The Hotel Cocoon was just a block away, so I stayed there. It's not chica friendly (I tried and tried), however, there is a $10 1 hour /2 HR rate (negotiable) rate right across the street. It's called the Venezia that is pretty decent.

On another note, brothers, I'm a bit frustrated because I post a lot of reviews when I visit SJ and whenever I ask a question, nobody ever responds. What is up with that shit? What goes around comes around, ya know.

I know the Dunn Inn is chica friendly but are there any chica fees? Any need to book a double room?I was considering staying at the Dunn Inn, I e-mailed them asking if they had a guest fee. They told me that if a guest is staying a shirt time there is no charge, but overnight guest are $10 each. I also asked about pictures of their rooms, they said they are on the website, but the pictures on the website suck, it's really hard to tell what the rooms are like.

On my last trip I stayed in one of the Penthouses at La Amistad. Room 310, it was enormous, there were two different living areas, there is a giant mirror by the bed, that my meager photography skills were unable to capture. It's not above the bed like on the ceiling, but instead its the wall above the headboard. It must be 8 to 10 feet tall. It's not a bad room, and it's not a bad deal given the price of other hotels in the area. The knocks on it are in my mind, that the advertising is deceptive, there was no jacuzzi in the room, which was a major factor in my electing to choose a penthouse, and the TV's were older tube TV's and didn't have digital inputs, which meant I couldn't hookup my GoPro to it. If you want a giant party room, this room is definitely for you. I would not want it again myself, as I didn't need an enormous room, I would have been just fine in a King size room. I will make sure next time I book at La Amsted to state that I want a Penthouse with a Jacuzzi, otherwise just give me a king size room.

I didn't stay in this room, but it was next to mine and empty the entire time. If I would have gotten this room I would have been pissed. The kitchen is monolithic, but there are no post, pans, dishes. Anything to use in the kitchen. Other than that, the room is quite small, in comparison to my room, 310. It also had the older style TV's like room 310, and no jacuzzi. I can't imagine anyone who had payed for a penthouse not being upset if they got this room. Even if you could cook in there, why would you with the all-inclusive deal they offer.

What a shotty room, and you could hear the train like nobodies business. I asked them to be as far away as the train, but it seemed to me I was beside the track.

Anyway, great people there and a great bar, but that train noise is horrendous.

I they advertise "MONEY EXCHANGE", but never have any money to exchange, they suggest that you go down to Sportsman Lodge. That offers a much worse rate than the rate that La Amsted advertise's.....If you want to change money in SJ, go to a bank. You will get the best rates in the banks. Just take your passport with you. There are a few banks within walking distance from Del Rey. One is right across the street from Hotel Morazan.

The one I prefer is across the street from the Gold Museum, Museo del Oro. Alternatively, you can also change money inside the casino at Hotel Morazan (better rate than inside the Del Rey).

There is a jacuzzi in there but also quite a bit of mold. A prostitute refused to have sex in there because of the air quality. A new air quality standard.

During the weekend the train runs less frequently so it is not so bad. They have a fun spinner bartender, whose name I forget, who is great. The food is also pretty good.

The Hemingway was bought by a well traveled interesting American named Deacon about 6 months ago, who now runs it with his lovely Nicaraguan wife.

Most of the rooms were redone, and if you are looking for a moderately priced alternative to the San Jose "regulars". I suggest you stop by and chat with him.

I wouldn't stay anywhere else these days!

One Lucky Dogg. That's not true. I'm not going to sate their policy, but chat with Deacon.

BTW, yes I have stayed there several times, some of the nicest rooms are on the street and you can hear traffic during the day with the windows open, and it remains my first choice for affordable Gulch lodging / Breakfast is a cut above some, offering eggs-your-style, pancakes and decent coffee. Bring your own butter if you're like me and can't abide margarine!

EIn three years of taking guys into the Gringo Gulch, I've taken 1 guy to the Balmoral. If you put the ladies name on the reservation before hand, you can check her in. I'm guessing you can slip the night auditor a $20 and he might let you take a lady up. Other than that, nope, not chica friendly.

About the butter. Better bring it from the states. It's twice as expensive here. I agree, sure is better than the local margarine.

Newbie here, headed to San Jose for the first time. Very excited, of course. I just have a question related having multiple girls up to your room. Any restrictions on this?

The only reason I'm asking is due to my experience in Lima where I could only have one girl up to my room at a time.

I'll probably have more questions as we get closer. Thanks for all your help and recommendations!

Mr. PrickMost places are cool with multiple girls. No problem at the Sportsmens, Amistad, Zona II, the Mona Lisa or the Del Rey. Only problem with the the. Are. Is an $11 chica fee per girl. So multiples is going to cost you.

Hey guys,

Coming down in December and I have lots of points to stay at the Holiday Inn or the Aloft. Does anyone have any experience or intel with bringing guest back with you? The Holiday Inn looks like it's close to the action but the Aloft is a better vibe.

Now thinking of not doing a CR trip.

Thanks all for your reports.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.El Maragato is not opposite Presidente. That one is Balmoral and is not. El Maragato is further down the pedestrian walk, past McDonald's and it's next door to the supermarket.

My friend and I just stayed there and they have a few tour groups staying there, but seem to be okay with an extra guest. The rooms are decent, but there are two problems:

The carpet hasn't been cleaned in years and the taxi has to stop one block away, unless after 10 pm Breakfast is decent and if they have a fridge available, they will move to.

Your room at no extra cost. If they thoroughly clean or replace the carpet, I would stay there again, since Morazan is off my list.

Mona Lisa (whatever new name), Amistad, or Sleep Inn? Just have a day & overnight after a few other destinations, it's my 3rd trip overall. Clean, safe, short taxi to action, and no chica fee is what I'm looking for. Last time I stayed at Mona Lisa, liked that they had a restaurant & poker game. So any thoughts or opinions?

Thanks.

They have reopened.
Calle 3 B at Avenida 9.

I don't know why they say 3 B on their card, when the street sign says 3 A?

Anyway it is next door to Zona II on the corner.

Hey everyone,

Has anyone ever stayed at both HLH and la amistad? I have reservations at la amistad but they screwed me by reserving me the worse room next to the train. The below is the break down:

La Amistad:

- all inclusive, free laundry, no chica fee and free ride to the airport. $100/ night cash. They are booked the week I'm arriving except for the shitty room.

HLH.

-free laundry, no chica fee, meals separate. $50/ nightly.

Which would you guys choose?

Has anyone heard any word on the former Hotel Europa's status? Or the Freebird Hotels status? Those are the two places I loved to stay at, no chica fee and walking distance from everything. Hoping to hear at least one of them have reopened. If anyone is around the area, please pop by and do some recon. Much appreciated.

I am at Inca Real right now. It was part of my flight package. It is ok, my room has no A / see I imagine the other rooms are the same. The rooms need fresh paint, carpet, and cleaning. Typical non chain Latin America hotel. Chica fee is $10. Pretty quite here at night. WIFI is good. Plenty of hot water for the shower. Seems like alot of Costa Rica travelers. A little noisy in the morning. Room includes breakfast, cereal, fruit, toast, coffee and juice. Next door to VIP, last night I walked to New Fantasy and Sportsman. I did walk to Del Rey, this morning. Most Chicas want to take a cab to come here. 2,000 colons.

I am not sure how much money I would have saved if it was not a flight / hotel package deal.

My GF and I were planning on staying at the Taormina on our upcoming trip to SJ because it's decent and close to the Del Rey. However the air conditioning is not working there and I was told it will not be up and running for some time.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a very nice hotel (hopefully not too far from the Del Rey) and girl-friendly?

Thanks much.
