You don't really need A / see in San José and there are no really upscale hotels in the downtown area.

If you want to be downtown near the Del Rey, I'd suggest the Sleep Inn, which is right behind it, and has a casino. It's not a 'high-end' hotel but probably the best one in the downtown area. It took me a while to think of the name, hence the two posts.

Would you happen to know if the Hilton Garden Inn (which looks to be a little more than a mile away) is girl-friendly and if it's practical to stay that far away from the Del Ray?

Thanks for the Sleep Inn suggestion.

Would you happen to know if the Hilton Garden Inn (which looks to be a little more than a mile away) is girl-friendly and if it's practical to stay that far away from the Del Ray?Don't know the hotel, but I wouldn't stress out about being a few miles from the Del Rey. Cabs are cheap (no tipping required or expected, BTW) and have meters (make sure they use the meter). They are also safer than in many places because each cab traces back to an individual medallion holder and no holder may have more than one medallion. I ostentatiously write down the cab number before I get in, and have a map in my hand that I pretend to look at to make sure they don't take the long way around. But, if it is at all busy they have no motivation to deviate because they are better off with more flag drops than more distance. I walk downtown at night but would not do so with a GF. At all.

I know that the way a chica dresses may raise some eyebrows by security or the front desk but any idea on whether the Hilton is girl-friendly or not?

Does anyone know if the Park Inn is girl-friendly?

Dickhead

You're asking these questions about a lot of hotels that most of us would never use, and you wouldn't really be able to rely on the answers anyway, because these things are constantly changing. What you need to do is contact these hotels directly, ask if they allow guests, and if so, are there any fees? Then save the replies in case they will not adhere to what they promised. There is no reason to be hesitant or shy about doing this, as everything you plan on doing is perfectly legal.

I would recommend staying East of Calle Central Alfredo Volio.

I'm assuming I should contact the hotel to find out their guest policy, correct?

P.S. : I just contacted the Park Inn and they have a $100 guest fee.

I had the lower street corner room, too much traffic and people noise. They said it was a premium room. It should be a discount room.

The Hemingway was bought by a well traveled interesting American named Deacon about 6 months ago, who now runs it with his lovely Nicaraguan wife.

Most of the rooms were redone, and if you are looking for a moderately priced alternative to the San Jose "regulars". I suggest you stop by and chat with him.

I wouldn't stay anywhere else these days!

Pura Vida.

Hi guys, has anyone stayed at El Maragato lately? I know the place is a bit rundown, but does anyone stayed there recently? Is it chica friendly? Thanks again guys!

Dickhead
09-24-16, 09:19
Contact the hotel and ask them yourself if they allow guests. Don't rely on second-hand information that is possibly outdated. Hotels go from chica-friendly to not chica-friendly and vice versa, all the time. Save the hotel's reply. If they say they allow guests, they can't refuse your hooker, not legally at least.

I simply cannot understand people's reluctance to do this.

Hi Dickhead,

Officially the Maragato is not girl friendly, I called to check. So I would not recommend anyone making a reservation there. The hotel is under new management. However, I was also informed by a fellow traveler that he stayed there recently and didn't have problems bringing a girl back unless the girl was dressed in a risque manner, otherwise no problems. This is a family hotel, after all. He stated he tipped the day shift staff $10 per guest, with no problems. He didn't know about the night shift. I was looking to see if anyone else had stayed there recently, to confirm what my friend stated. I'm doing business literally across the street from this hotel, which is part of the reason I wanted to stay there. Thanks.

So as we can see, due to frequent management changes and the general vicissitudes of life in Latin America, it's best to get the info straight from the horse's mouth. That is the point I have been trying to make. Yes, at any given hotel, one may succeed in violating policy, especially by spreading some money around. But to my way of thinking, most people going to a foreign country on vacation, to monger, are not going to want to roll the dice like that. Might work one time and not another, or on one shift and not another, and so forth. Not worth it, in my opinion. Similarly, I buy weed on the street in San José all the time. But if someone says to me, 'Is it okay to buy weed on the street in San José?,' I am not going to say, 'Oh sure, it's totally fine.' I am going to say, YMMV, and watch your ass.

Long time ago hotel Presidente was the place to stay. Good room and nice breakfast. Girl friendly and all one had to do was write her name and your room number on the book. Sometimes nobody bothered. If you want more than one girl wait half hour and go out and bring the other one in while the first girl waits in the room. It had its own secure car parking as I usually rent a car.

Once they started being not girl friendly many others followed. Nowadays it is very difficult to get a decent girl friendly hotel except DelRay.

I used to love going to San Jose with all pretty Colombians to be had. Last couple of times it is disappointing.

Dickhead
09-24-16, 19:30
Similarly the hotel I stayed in last year, which used to cater to mongers, is no longer chica friendly. But if you posted on the board, 'is Hotel X chica friendly?' my guess is that many people would post that it is.

Hi guys, as you know women friendly hotel policies are always changing in San Jose. Sure I know we can call all the hotels firsthand to get the latest info, but does anyone care to to provide an updated list (to the best of their knowledge) of maybe 10+ hotels in San Jose not to far from the action that are women guest friendly? (I already 'read the reports' but I was looking for an overall update.) Things to mention for each hotel:

1. Amount hotel charges per night.

2. Amount of the guest fee, if one exists.

3. Anything else pertinent that one cares to share about the hotel, and if you'd recommend it.

This would be a big help for everyone.

Is this hotel still open? Although dated I like this hotel because of proximity to del ray and other places besides no Chacko fee.

Thanks for reply. Will be there in February.

I had a strange and unsettling encounter with this hotel a few months ago. I had booked seven or eight nights, which they made me pay up front. I had medical emergency, which landed me in the emergency room and I spent the next days working on getting back to the US. Eventually. I had one night unused, and they would not give me an refund. They said that I would have a credit when I return. Who knows when that will be? I can't believe that more of the hotels there believe that they should charge for direct reservations up front, like Trip Advisor, Expedia, and other resellers.

It was obvious that I was not well, because the hotel called the ambulance. As I was leaving to go home, the front desk broke the news of no refund to me. When I asked to see the manager, he was too busy, "in a meeting", but might see me in 20 minutes. I said to tell him that I had a meeting at the airport in 20 minutes.

But I agree, it's a shame that Presidente is no longer a friendly venue. I enjoyed my first ever trip to San Jose there, but nowadays, Sportsman's would be my go-to place were I to return.

Since they could not rent your room to anyone else, I understand why they charged you for it. I think offering you a credit on a future stay was going above what many hotels would do.

If I was in the same situation as you, I would have asked someone about possible reduced charges prior to checking out.

I have always paid by credit card and paid only for nights stayed (just as I do in the USA) Actually, never had my card charged up front at check-in until it changed owners last year. I actually considered to file a claim against the card as an overcharge since my flight records confirmed when I left. During my very first trip in 1997, I stayed at DR and the card was charged at checkout.

Hi everyone,

April 29th 2017 (a Saturday) will be my first ever visit to fine-divine San Jose. How about a friendly, down to earth spot (maybe Sportsman's Lodge?) for a professional polite 53 year old? Can Sportsman's be dead on a Saturday? Also.

1. What are the other best gal bars, is Del Rey still good?

2. What is a hotel nearby that allows girls, I need to get some sleep, and I know Del Rey and Sportsmans can get loud till all hours.

3. Does it make sense to stay at a nearby girl friendly hotel? Will the gals taxi with you from Del Rey to a nearby hotel?

4. Are taxis readily available?

Remember, there is no Wizard of Oz, only the yellow brick road.

Hey Magic,

For your first trip do Sportsmen, Amistad, or Del Rey and you'll easily connect with someone and it will make your short stay easy for a first-timer. If your there for a short stay I wouldn't worry about the noise factor, you'll sleep easy I'm sure. All girl-friendly. Don't waste your time staying some off-site place, there is no need. There are a few other places as well but best to keep it simple and easy to meet someone else to hang with choose one of them three.

Once you meet a girl you get along with to explore further you basically can walk outside the front door of the Del Rey with her and at night there will almost always be a taxi or two there to take for the 5 minute ride to Amistad or Sportsmen. Or, if you're at the Del Rey head to your room.

I am going to San Jose for Halloween. I usually stay at the Sportmens, but they are booked. I have never stayed at Taormina or Amistad, but they seem to be my best options at this point.

I'd be interested in hearing the pros and cons of each spot. I have heard about the train noise issue at the Amistad.

Thanks.IMO, the Amistad scores higher than the Taormina in most areas. Amistad does not have a casino, and there are no chicas there un-escorted. Those are the only areas I give Taormina the advantage. You didn't include Hotel Castillo in your choices, but I would choose it over either of your choices. It is owned and managed by the Amistad, so all amenities are the same. I don't think the bar and kitchen are completed at the Castillo, but they may be by Halloween.

Also, the Amistad is rather run down.

Taormina is rather new and modern. No train. Classy place.

Taormina is rather new and modern. No train. Classy place.Unless things have changed recently, the train does not blow it's horn between sometime around 11 pm and 6 am.

I never saw any area of the Amistad that is run down. It is an old mansion converted to a hotel, so there are some small rooms and some with only a little outside light, but it has been well maintained.

The Taormina building has been there a long time. I think it was originally a Quality Inn, so it was built as a hotel. The inside has been remodeled recently. I have never stayed there, but recent reports are that the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the staff is now more responsive to customers' complaints and concerns. It changed ownership a year or so ago.

I grade Amistad higher than the Taormina because the Amistad caters to guys in San Jose for the women. The Taormina caters to everyone. Since the Amistad is small, the staff has a more personal relationship with the guests.

Not only are they not Chic Friendly Anymore, But it's dead. It's just dead.

I haven't been to Costa Rica in 5 years, and I caught myself dreaming of my favorite suite at the Dunn Inn, Grabbing a beer and some breakfast from the bar, and Saying Hi to old friends.

Well all that's gone.

Nope.

Nobody's there.

I stayed out of Nostalgia. Even though I knew no chicas we allowed I still wanted my Junior Suite and I got it.

I enjoyed myself.

But the rest of the place is dead.

There is no bar downstairs, no food to order. I think the owner sold / Split the place and gave the restaurant away, resulting in a new / different restaurant and all different staff.

I didn't want to eat at the new restaurant, I wanted to eat at the small bar. But there wasn't any staff there to take my order, just empty bar with tables and chairs.

The new restaurant was decorated way differently, no modern flair, more like clown paint with terrets brush stroke influence.

The place was filled with old backpackers, older couples and older women wearing backpacks and shorts and doing their thing.

I felt like the hotel was empty most of the time. Either the backpackers got up earlier than me, went to bed earlier than me, or were always out on tour.

The staff remembered me from 5 years ago.

I feel like I paid more than I should have for what I got, as the Amistad would have put me in a King Suite with a Jacuzzi + 3 free meals a day + free bar drinks + $40 masseuse on staff daily. And the Sportsman would have hooked me up with a dope king sized room with free breakfast for the same price or less.

How do I know? I stayed in the Sportsman twice myself during my stay at the don't Inn so I could get with a Chica. And some dudes who I met who became buddies Had the King suite in the Amistad and made sure to let me know what I was missing.

I facepalmed, but I really wanted to stay at the don't Inn. That time was Just for me. It was perfectly silent. Which is what I wanted.

I didn't mind the no chica rule at all. As it provided the perfect retreat from the chaos, which is what I was there for, but It was a fortress of serious, serious solitude.

All in all, I missed the place, so I went to experience it again.

If you don't miss the place and you want some girls, don't go, the Taormina across the street has awesome rooms too.

Hi All.

I have been to SJO before and stayed at the Amistad and went over to SL, but now that I am looking the SL rooms are way cheaper than the Amistad. So who has stayed in the SL rooms?

Dickhead
02-24-18, 18:19
I have stayed at the SL four or five times, but not for a couple of years. The rooms near the bar are noisy, but the bar closes early. I like the rooms towards the back, on the ground floor. All the rooms I have stayed in have been fairly comfortable, decent beds, fridge. My take on the SL is that if it were just a hotel, it would be somewhat overpriced. And if it were just a place to pick up hookers, there are better looking hookers on average. But I like the combination of the two. One the one hand, there are a lot of clueless gringos there that kind of mess things up. On the other hand, those people make me look good by comparison. So when the hookers get sick of using their pidgin English to communicate with guys speaking pidgin Spanish, I swoop in with a lowball offer and they tend to be accepted. It's not a bad place to watch sports, the food is okay, and the free breakfast will fill you up if you sit there for a while and keep eating. I don't get to CR much any more, but for the right price, I would stay at SL again. Hope that helps.

From the Sportsman's Lodge, I do not believe there is a short term hotel much closer than Parque Central, which is not that far. Hotel Diana by Parque Central rents short term rooms, or you could go to the Del Rey and there is one across the street. Calle Ocho has many short term hotels and is not very far from Sportsman's in terms of taxi fares. I think there is a short term hotel by Bar Malibu as well. That might even be closer than Hotel Diana, or very close to the same distance.

I find it hard to believe that a hooker at Sportsman's would not know where to take you if you are not staying there. That place is designed for the people who already have rooms, but those who do not get taken by the residents can sure find some place to fuck you. My guess, honestly, would be that if they say they don't know where to go with you, they don't like you for some reason. So review your approach, would be my suggestion.

Nah, I don't use short term hotels very much, personally. I just know where some are by having walked by them a bunch of times when I was living on the same block as Little Havana. I miss that apartment. And actually, now that I think of it, Bar Málibu may itself rent out its rooms short-term. He had that kind of license, last time I was there, which has been three years now.

Short-term hotel = 'hotel transitorio' in many parts of the Spanish-speaking world, and 'telo' in others. 'Hotel de amor' might work as well. Or the people at Sportsman's Lodge would probably be willing to tell you where the nearest one is.

Has anyone been successful with Airbnb or is this frowned upon? I'm on a bit of a tight budget and some airbnb locations are outstanding for the same price, if not cheaper as mid tier hotels. Has anyone had this experience?Did you find out? My guess is that unless you choose the "whole place to myself" option, you wouldn't have the privacy you'd want. And even then depending on the set up, maybe not, if the hosts are on-site.

So, first time in Costa Rica in October.

I have done a bit of research and found two hotels that might be the best due to location.

Has anyone been there? Which one would you choose?

My questions are regarding security and perhaps taking some chicas to the room.

The hoteles are:

Taormina Hotel and casino https://www.booking.com/hotel/cr/taormina-and-casino.es.html.

The other one is:

EXE San Jose Center https://www.booking.com/hotel/cr/exe-san-jose-center.es.html.

What do you think? I want it to have a safe, and to be able to go out at night with no trouble.

Last time I checked they were not and the couple that would allow it, the Chica fee is around $50-$70 USD, so not worth it IMO.

Marriott / Sheraton properties girl friendly?Upscale hotel at known mongering destinations take it seriously when you bring in different girls to your room. Usually daytime is not much of a problem because usually they have meetings, conferences etc except if they have a guard checking at the elevators. I have sneaked in some girls. If overnight I keep them in the room and order food to the room. Best bet is to ask the girl to take escalators to the meeting rooms level and you can meet them there and take the elevators. Those are usually not guarded. Nighttime security is very strict.

Unless you are going to wife up a girl and both of you check in together stay at other guests allowed hotels maybe with a small fee.

One time I sneaked in two girls one older and a young girl. They thought we are a family LOL.

Having said that make sure girls are not dressed trashy.

Thanks!Certainly not chica friendly. Last I recall it was 85 dollar fee, but even with that they certainly do not want chicas in the hotel.

Walking to the places you mention is generally safe. None of those places have short term rooms. Lots of chicas but they are not in the business of short term rooms. Girls on site are totally independent.

Short term rooms are available in low priced hotels, and one not too far away called La Oficina. You would need to take a cab to get there with a chica. There used to be a couple of short term places near the Del Rey if you met a chica there, possibly they still exist, in any case the chicas will know.

Marriott / Sheraton properties girl friendly? The Aloft, which is a Marriott Bonvoy property is unofficially girl friendly. No security, just whichever girl is working the check-in desk, and none of them seem to care or pay attention. You can also come in through the pool and breakfast area and go straight to the elevators, avoiding the front desk.

I'm here now and their front desk is a circular window that can see most everything that's on. They have a line of sight to the elevator so not sure. One of the chicas I'm getting together with has been here so they must be getting by. Going to try with a girl at 7 pm as well. I'm not high volume and I've asked them to dress modestly when they get here but not sure how to pull it off. I probably should have kept the Taormina as my working girl spot but what's done is done.

I always stay near the San Jose airport my last night in Costa Rica and typically want to have a girl over for a last farewell. Last year I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express and they hassled me, was really embarrassing for both of us. I ended up checking her in, in full view of several guests / families who were waiting in line. Maybe it was my mistake, I guess I should have told them I was having a guest beforehand.

In any case ID like to skip the hassle. Anyone know a good place? Thank you.

But I've stayed at the Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belen close to the airport and it's my favorite of the hotels I've stayed at in San Jose by far. I had access to the executive lounge and that was a big part of the reason I liked it. I have no idea whether they'd hassle your guest.

If they cater to families or tourists they do NOT want men bringing in working girls. Its very simple.

Now perhaps you might get away with it. Perhaps they may allow it if you are discreet. Perhaps perhaps perhaps. But guarantee they do not want it there. Same with most airbnb's. So either you stay in a place that does welcome guests for their guests, or specifically get the ok from your host you will have a problem. I am in an airbnb now. A condo building, and even though I registered my long time girlfriend with me, and the host agreed, the front desk is giving me a lot of grief. I'm sure even if I was married to her I would have to show her ID and the marriage certificate and get the written authorization from the host every day for my wife to visit me. Even though technically she is as much a guest as I am.

I don't think it's that simple.

The problems you're having right now are extreme. I'd be extremely insulted if I were you, or your girlfriend. Treating her like a wh*re isn't acceptable. It doesn't usually pay to get mad or self righteous in another country, but you could get away with it here.

In my years of mongering I've never had a woman denied entrance to a hotel that I can remember, except for one place in Spain. The woman was someone I picked up in a bar, not a hooker, and she was older than me. They wouldn't let us in because we weren't married. Anyway, these are my strategies.

1. If you're going to have a steady stream of women, then yes, make sure the hotel is hooker friendly.

2. A busy lobby is a plus, unless you're planning on bringing back a skank at 2:00 AM when nobody will be in it.

3. Look for a bar or restaurant in the hotel you can take your date to before you go to the room.

4. Is there a side entrance you can use, that doesn't go by the front desk? Maybe you can drive up to the room?

5. If you're in a situation where you just have to pass a single security person, be it in a hotel or at a check gate, passing the guy a generous tip on the way in isn't a bad idea. Generous tips in general will do wonders (not always. See Cuba experience below).

6. If I believe the hotel is problematic, I won't meet a date and bring her back late at night. Instead I'll set up a date for the next day. This gives you more options for subterfuge. You're going to tell her to dress conservatively, and it's not a bad idea to meet her outside the hotel and walk in together. Props can help. I've given women yellow writing pads. Then engage her in serious conversation while entering the hotel. Spout off something like "Me preocupan sobre el efecto de la tasa de interes.Y si el gobierno cambia. Eso podria crear un mal ambiente para el negocio. " Say it loud and say it clear. And say it in English if you want. Make her look like your business associate. Nobody wants to tell a business woman she's a w*ore, even if they have their suspicions. Or walk in with shopping bags. That just shouts "girlfriend." And, except for the assholes in your condo complex, nobody wants to call a girlfriend a w*ore either.

7. Register your guest. Or you can book for two people and if they ask, say your girlfriend hasn't arrived yet, so you can register some random woman later. The problem frequently is they'll ask for her name, so that can nuke you. If they do I just make one up.

In my years of mongering, I can't recall ever having the hotel tell me I can't bring my date to my room. And I can only recall three, rather embarrassing, encounters:

1. Once at the Bristol in Panama a receptionist with an attitude, probably like at the place you're staying now, said you need to wait and have me call security and they will interrogate your date. Or she must leave her ID and I will copy it and put her on my naughty girl list. (I guess if she came in a second time with another guest they wouldn't let her in.) This happened while I was registering by the way, and my date was someone I met about an hour before at the famed Golden Time brothel. It wasn't a big deal, but annoying because the receptionist was so damn haughty. My date was dressed like a professional, which I think was standard for the ladies at GT doing outcalls or leaving the premises. The problem was that she was Colombian. Panamanians can spot Colombian hookers a mile away, because they're drop dead beautiful, and all the Panamanians are ugly. So even though my date kept her mouth shut, so they didn't pick up on the accent, they had her figured out.

2. I got a woman in Cuba into my room for an overnighter by taking her to the restaurant on the top floor of the hotel. If you don't know, Cuba's the hardest place in the western world to take a hooker to a hotel room. If the girl's caught, or staff is caught letting the girl in, there are potential repercussions with the police. Paying a generous tip to the security guy beforehand wasn't going to do any good, because he'd be gone by morning. Anyway when exiting the hotel the next day, the security guard gave me the third degree, even after I slipped him $40, which was more than a months wage. Nobody got in trouble though.

3. There was this instance, in Bangkok at the Mandarin Oriental, http://www.internationalsexguide.nl/forum/showthread.php?1029-Bangkok-Hotels&p=1889858&highlight=Mandarin#post1889858. I told my date, who was about 30 years old (old for Thailand) to dress conservatively. Instead she came to our dinner date dressed in a skimpy, sleeveless T-shirt with her massive store bought breasts hanging out. Before going to dinner, I actually verified with a bellman, who I tipped generously, that there wouldn't be a problem bringing her back to the hotel. And there wasn't. The problem occurred when leaving the next morning.

In Costa Rica when I was mongering I always stayed in a girl friendly hotel. But I have been to several hotels in San Jose and one in Manuel Antonio with a woman who was a lot younger and a lot more attractive than I am. I never had your problem. Sorry for your suffering, honestly! That sucks.

I need some suggestions for a place to stay one night. I do not want to stay at any of the normal monger hotels, and would like to find something on the east side of town in Barrio Escalante if possible. If it is guest friendly, that would be great, but not necessary. Just want a safe, inexpensive, clean, simple place to spend one night before my Airbnb is ready the next day. One last thing, not looking for a high rise or dealing with elevators, even for one night.

Does the "modern" wing in the back have elevators? I stayed once before, in one of the ground floor rooms in the old section closest to the street, I think in the Alegria room. Definitely to low end for a repeat. Hoping back wing is a few steps up, but I have a bit of a bum leg and don't want to hump up & down multiple flights of stairs several times a day.

Can anyone with recent experience confirm if Dunn is chica friendly? I've seen mixed reviews on recent posts saying they are, they aren't, and anywhere from $10-30+ chica fee.

Also, from what I've seen / read, it's maybe a 100 yards walk for Taornima. Any reason to be worried about safety going between one and the other at night?

I'd prefer to stay at Taornima, but it appears they only do direct booking and I prefer to book through a 3rd party site with travel points. It's effectively the difference between paying full price and nothing for me.

Otherwise, everytime you bring a girl to your room. You will have to pay an additional fee for each girl, every time.
