Have to agree master monger that Angeles is a shadow of its former self and has been for a few years.

The mongers are showing up in AC from both countries. This is the AC forum by the way, and the sex tourists are not the hypothetically 'average' male inhabitants of the country. You would have to work hard and provide good service just to pay your bills and survive. Now let's say the market changed and you were now making $120 an hour. Why the Koreans have more money to spend. Just some thoughts in general.
1. Their flight is much shorter and thus cheaper and I believe their discount airline has direct flights to AC now.

And the Philippines and central Luzon are full of "plans" that never come to fruition. Regarding the rail line, however, a Japanese group recently signed a contract to add an overhead passenger rail line from Manila to Malolos in Bulacan Province. Malolos is about half way between Manila and AC/San Fernando. Extending the line on to AC is another question, however, and it is possible this project is really only intended to carry commuting workers in and out of Metro Manila.
I saw some photos suggesting construction has begun, although projected completion may not be until 2020. The route follows the old Philippine National Railway right of way. The Manila terminus, at least as described in news reports, is at the PNR facilities near Tondo. Seems like it would have made more sense to follow the existing tracks and connect to LRT 1 at Blumentritt. But I am not a "planner," let alone Filipino, so what do I know? I do have more confidence that a Japanese group is likely to follow this through to completion.

Okay, after having come back a couple of weeks ago from AC, I want to recommend the following places for daytime:
Fields Avenue-.
I❤New Color, pronounced as I Love New Color. Its a small bar near the middle of Fields Avenue, with about 20 girls at anytime all dressed in the same theme outfits. Gets good between 2 pm to 7 pm. Has some decent ones.
Viking Bar- had few decent girls in the daytime, but selection / quanity of girls was low.
On Perimeter-.
Ponytails is the best daytime bar in the area. Other members have commented on this too.
Ice Bar- Has some decent ones, best around 5 pm or later.
Fire Pit- okay but not as much talent as the 2 above.
Tip: Take trike or motorbike if you want to go from Fields area to Ice Bar or Fire Pit, as they are very far from Fields Avenue. Good 20 minute walk.

I got in at 1 am last night and high tailed it down to Fields. I went to look for a girl I know who works in Equus but did not see her. When I left out I got to talking to the door girls. The agreement was signed last year (2015) under EDCA to allow greater access to 8 bases in the Philippines for "rotation of ships and planes for humanitarian and maritime security operations".

Just came back from Angeles City and I wanted to give you guys a updated Trip Report for the March 2016.
*My background.
Last Time I was in Angeles City was in 2014. I went back this time in March 2016 and This will be my 4th Trip.
Now for you guys that say Angeles city has changed for the worse. I think it greatly over-exaggerated. I think its a lot of poor souls that want to scare guys from coming to Angeles city so they can have it all for themselves.
But I would say that the quality has gone down a bit, (Or maybe I'm getting older and more jaded?) Anyways lets talk about.
Day 1.
So I landed in Manila Airport and the airport has changed a bit, It's a lot more modern than the last time I went was in 2014. I cleared customs very quickly and I had a airport pickup arranged with my Hotel which I was staying at the ABC Hotel. The drive was a little bit long. It takes about 1 hour or More to get to Angeles city. It depends on the traffic. I did not arrive until around 1:00 am, ABC is still the same beautiful hotel that I miss. Its truly amazing and 5 Star. Sometimes you wonder why somebody would build a 5 Star Hotel in the middle of a dump like Angeles City. I have been to Las Vegas, And They don't got shit on the ABC Hotel especially when it comes to price. Also it looks like the owner is making a lot of money, the owner Gerald (I think?) is currently. Building tower number 4 and its suppose to be even more crazy and more luxury than tower 3. I don't know how much more luxury you can get? But its suppose to have a pool on the roof, and he is opening a night club on the bottom to rival High Society. This is a rumor So I don't know how true all of this is. I ask one of the workers. So please take what I say about Tower 4 with a grain of salt.
Now I know you guys are sick of me talking about the ABC Hotel. So let get right to business? What are the Bars and girls like? Well like I said after I check in my hotel and took a shower, I headed right to walking street and went to doll-house. Now the first night I got there. The talent was not all that but I did not worry to much because it was already 3:00 am in the morning, so I know all the hotel stunner are maybe already bar-fined. So the first night kinda terrible for me. It was slim pickings, I bar-fined the waitress at doll-house and I got to drunk that night that I did not even have sex in the morning. My brain was to mess-up to have sex and also the waitress I bar fine after she took her all her clothes and makeup she looked horrible in the morning. I know its a waste of a bar fine but hey you got to take losses sometimes.
Day 2- Day 7 (After 1 Week) Make a long story short.
Well after about a week in Angeles City. I would say that nothing has really changed. There is still plenty girls and if you want the really pretty girls, I would say go to the bar very early like 8:00 pm and up because all the really pretty ones get bar fined really quick. There is a influx of Koreans guys that are making it Rain, And I guess that has flush out a lot of Gringos especially White Guys. I don't see to many old white guys like how I used to back in 2012-2014. Maybe its the Economy and the Euro that has taken a hit. In which the average guy on a pension can't enjoy Angeles city like how he use too. Also I heard a lot of guys get mad about getting rejected for bar fine. I would say don't get to stress about it. My advice is try to dress clean and don't look like a creep or bad guy. Try to look approachable and make sure your hygiene is good. Its always good to wash your ass and smell good.
A lot of these bar girls told me a lot of war stories with there costumers and they also hear a lot of stories from there bar girl friends. You know Pinoys love to Gossip. Remember there is a lot of fucked up costumers / guys that come to Angeles city. You had 1 active serial killer that was chopping up girls and putting them in mattress to customers bar fine 1 girls and then when she goes back to the room, There is 10 Guys waiting for her and they all gangbang and [CodeWord123] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord123) her. That is just some of the horror stories that they told me, I don't know how much of its is true. But from what I hear, If I was a bar girl, I would act funny about bar-fining with just any old costumer. Now for me I'm not trying to brag but I had no problem bar-fining any girl especially after 2-3 days of me landing there. I think I had no problems because I was staying at the ABC Hotel. I swear the ABC hotel is like owning a Mercedes Benz. I guess they assume your Rich if you can stay at the ABC. So to the guys say they have problems bar fine I would say you might have too bar fine a few average chicks and wait until word gets around that your a cool guy and after that almost all the girls will know that your cool and willing to bar fine. Remember these Filipino women talk too.
They have a Pinoy Chick network so they know who is a cool guy and who is a asshole, and once your labeled a asshole, its going to be hard to bar-fine girls in the future.
As of 2016 Angeles City Pros and Cons.
Pros.
*GFE is still available and still the best mongering places for GFE.
*The Girls Speaks English (Its refreshing when you visit other monger countries like Brazil and DR where a translator is a must*.
*Pussy can be cheap. If you hit up High Society Most Girls will fuck for a morning meal or 1000 pesos.
*Money Talks so if you want a high quality bar girl stunner you might have to flash some cash or stay at the ABC Hotel if you want Easy BarFines with no hassle.
Cons.
*The Quality has gone down a bit so if your looking for a stunna make sure you go early.
*Prices has gotten a little expensive. Most Bars want 3000 pesos and up for BarFine.
*After a few days you can get bored very quickly. Its not much to do in Angeles City.
*Some of these Girls are Shy in Bed, I only had maybe 2-3 good nuts.
Tips for Angeles in 2016*.
1*-When Barfine girls always check there vibes and feel them out. If she is acting very cold towards you and not smiling. She will be almost the same way in Bed.
2*-Avoid Lady drinks they add up quickly to your bar bill.
Overall I stayed a good 2 weeks in Angeles, I'm very sorry for a short trip report but this is all I can get off the top of my head. I would say Angeles City is a good place but to be honest I might not go back for another 2 years (2018). I don't know if its because I'm getting older but I don't think its worth the 20 hour Plane Ride anymore. On This trip I was kinda bored and after about a week I was ready to go home, It did not have the excitement like I had back in 2012-2013. For all you new guys don't make my words discourage you from going. For a Virgin eyes, You are still going to have fun. But for a old veteran like me. I think I'm tired of Angeles and might just go maybe once every 2 years. Just my 2 cents.

Just to clarify one of he points in FS' post; Gerard, the owner of ABC is building a new night club but it will not be on the hotel grounds. The new club is under construction, and will be integrated into a small strip mall he's building on the right side of the road at e entrance to Walking Street. Tower 4 of the hotel will have a pool on the roof complete with full service cabanas. It's slated to open sometime around the first of next year.

After securing a few months of time on AC soil I decided to give a few short bar reviews from a sensitive young American's perspective.
(Valhalla)- Drinks are around $50 pisos (water) and lady drinks are around $160 pisos. This is a small bar near Lollipop that does not get much customers. They don't have a stellar lineup but they do have a couple of bangable ladies. I stumbled upon this bar because I was smitten with the door girl. They treat me really well here because sometimes I'm the only or first customer. They closed during a good portion of holy week. Not for the mongers that want non-stop eye candy. Not a bad choice if you got turned down by a DHG honey and are trying to save your night. Did I mention they have a pool table?(Lollipop) -I found this bar because I ran into a waitress who loves men from my ethnic background. She tracked me down 5 hrs. Later at a disco. I was oblivious to the fact I ran into her earlier in the night. She also has a partner in crime with an outstanding rack. Those two have my spidey sense tingling because they are not looking for relationships. They are true party girls. I have to isolate them like the'Angelo Russell because they pad my bill. Some "friends", "huh"? Drinks (water) is around 50 pisos. Single lady drinks 150/160 pisos. They burnt me a couple of times by charging me for double and lying that there were no singles. The mgr. Is American and friendly. The bar fine for dancers in red are $2400 and 3000 for ladies in black. This two tier price structure is interesting. They usually have around 35 ladies on a weekend night dancing. I say around 10 are bar fineable. Some are really out of shape. More so than my fellow mongers. (After Dark) - I was down on my luck and down to Plan see and the doorman suggested I have a look inside. The lineup wasn't bad and as aforementioned I am a sucker for door girls. I did a 5 HR session with her and it was mostly GFE. The lineup is cool and the doorman is ultra helpful. A straight to the point bar based on simplicity. Blow Row (Perfect Life) This bar is near Penthouse hotel and the Ministop. I only found 1 girl to my liking here. Lady drinks are $2 and ST is 1000 (may have been overcharged but not a longtime patron with loyalty points) LT 2000. The lady's performance was good and hot but she does rush after 5 minutes. To close the dreaded (Black Pearl) which is a couple buildings past Perfect Life. Similar price structure as Perfect Life. The difference between the two is most girls are mature and regular janes. There service is good. However, they are greedy! Even after you tip them 20-50% they want more (gifts & loans). This is no problem for most mongers because they know how to say "No" or pay the surcharge and dump them for true hotties.

Angeles is now infested with gangs of begging kids. Often they will hang around outside 7-eleven and Mini Stop shops watching through the window how customers pay and where they keep their money. When the customer leaves the shop they will pester and / or crowd and pick pocket the person as they know where that person's money is kept. In any case, keep the urchins away from you as persistently begging, crowding, touching you and bumping against you is a well known pickpocket technique. In daytime they frequent the dust bowl between SM Clark and the jeepney terminal. At 6 pm onwards they invade the Fields and side streets. You may also consider using exchange shops that have a back room as urchins are also watching those shops.
Hi Guys, this trip I learned that the perimeter bars are preferable to Walking Street bars. They are cheaper (booze and broads) and no less quality IMO. Picked up a nice one from A Touch of (CL) ass and had a great time with her. One more note to add: the first night I got in I didn't arrive until late (bus from Manila took about 5 hours-insane traffic) so I thought maybe all of the good looking girls were gone (just like in Sabang-it's the Koreans. JRIMHO none of the hotels I stayed in asked for I. D. If you escort them in no questions will be asked. If they come by themselves reception will call you and certain M / S is downstairs for you. You need to say ok, send her up. They do not check I. D. They just ask the girl what her name is. When the girl leaves unescorted they call your room to get your permission for her to leave.
Almost all visitors are in AC for girls. So it is your own responsibility to make sure that the girl is of legal age. If you have taken the girl from the bar you are safe because bars nowadays make sure the girl is of legal age. It was not always the case before. I can't provide a definitive answer to the question of why Angeles has become such a depressing experience, except to note that the decline in quality and attitude seems to parallel a general deflation of the entire country. The self-serving rhetoric of corrupt politicians notwithstanding, the entire country has, I believe started rolling down a gentle slope of overall decline. Levels of poverty are increasing ((as opposed to opposite trends elsewhere in ASEAN), the indifference and incompetence of senior government officials grows worse, the infrastructure--such as it is--deteriorates further with each passing day, insurgencies in Mindanao are proliferating, and there's simply no improvement discernible in any key sector. The economy in general in fact would implode without remittances provided by those who have found work abroad, providing key support to an estimated 50% of the population left at home.
I enjoy Angeles if I'm there with a friend, but only for a couple of days. I basically perceive the town as a large slum, with one semi-acceptable hotel and lots of dingy bars and a few attractive women. So, two days of bar hopping with a buddy whose company I enjoy is about all I can take. Burgos is slightly better, but in the end, spending--all in--about $200 for evanescent pleasure with an illiterate 18-20 year old is something I can do without most of the time. After half a lifetime in third world countries that will always remain third world countries, the novelty has pretty thoroughly dissipated.
Given the lack of compelling cultural interests, a cuisine that's probably the worst in Asia and the general difficulty associated with getting anywhere, I can well understand those who decide not to come here. At least getting ripped off in Thailand or even Vietnam or Cambodia is a lot more fun.

The economy in general in fact would implode without remittances provided by those who have found work abroad, providing key support to an estimated 50% of the population left at home.

In answer to some that have asked why Angeles has declined in fun, here are a few views.
A few years back bars were full of attractive, slim girls eager to barfine every day and with who ever asked within reason.
Then came along the double priced lady drinks, bargirls now could earn large commissions every time a punter buys a drink, ball trowing / poppers / balloons commissions, making it rain with cash thrown were introduced again all extra money for the bargirls.

There has never, in the history of the country, been an honest election, but this one is more fractious than most. My guess--which is supported by recent, alledgedly "clean" polls-- is that in a fair election, Duterte would win. An outcome that couldn't be tolerated by the political elite who would doubtless quickly find themselves in jail, and would lose their historical prerogatives. Duterte supporters, or at least some of them, have vowed to act radically should he not be declared the winner. There's fairly widespread speculation about another EDSA-type revolution, the possible secession of Mindanao, and other violence-prone scenarios. I can't predict the likelihood of any of this occurring, but I do get a sense that average Filipinos have about reached the breaking point, so I can't rule out the possibilities.
I'd suggest that, for the next few months at least, newborns exercise greater than normal caution. If possible, stay at a hotel that offers door-to-bar service and use the hotel cars. If possible, don't travel to bars alone, and get rid of the bling. Keep your hands firmly in your pockets and walk through the urchins. Stay sober, and bar fine quickly and then get back to the more secure environment of your hotel. Don't stop and chat with anyone in Walking Street and don't get into arguments with Filipinos. At least public arguments.

Penthouse Hotel was already there though. Then I went home and the raids happened. When I came back short after that only one bar in Raymond St. Was left with only two or three girls. A. When I was in AC in last November, one evening I BF my favorite BG from Icarus. We walked to SM to have dinner and see a movie. For some unknown reason we decided to use the overhead walkway beginning at Maingate Jeepney Station. There were 3-4 locals hanging around the escalator (the one that never worked). Now, I am a strapping 6' 2" 200 lb. African American 35 years young. (Probably think I have no PHP {joke people}). But I do have some street smarts. I don't carry my Note 5 around, don't wear my smart watch, keep my pesos in that little front pocket of your jeans, etc. I have been mobbed by the kids and the no legs skateboard guy, even after going into a shop to get my manicure (don't judge). But 95% percent of the time I put on a "Fuck wit me if you want face". 1 other time I was totally drunk, headphones in my ears, singing Stevie Wonder. I think the kids looked after me that morning. I don't even remember getting back to my hotel. Learned my lesson that day. Just be safe and know as a foreigner, you will be targeted. Every gorgeous orchard has a bad apple or two or two thousand.

I did not pick up street girls and I never talk to anyone on the street. I walk with confidence and do not stop on the street.

I still state AC is safe. I have been patronizing the strip of shops across the street from Manson Drugs 7-11 running to the Checkpoint jeepney terminal. There are many small shops along with cell phone stores and one produce mart. At first, to me, the strip of shops looked a little intimidating from the Manson side of the street. As I walked by the shops to and from the jeepney terminal because it had the shade I started to nod Hello, to some of the shop keepers. I have bought phone chargers, load cards and screen protectors from the shops. Everyone was nice. I buy fresh fruit from the produce mart. The produce mart has some of the best fruits and veggies there. In conclusion this side of the street may look shady at first but it is safe.
Most guards at shops are paid the minimum wage. In AC minimum wage is P355 a day. You can have an army of 12 for less than $100 a day. Here's an idea! For those who feel so unsafe just hire 6 guards - 2 guards a shift.
Most robbers and muggers are not that smart but I imagine they target the stupid ones first.

If you want to catch a jeepney and want to avoid the crush of people in the jeepney at the terminal, go to a position just up the road from Pony Tails and wait for a empty relocating jeepney. They will stop for you if you are that distance from the jeepney terminal. As mentioned in a post, carry change and small notes wherever you go. For the Perimeter jeepney you should have 8 Peso handy. Never get in arguments with Filipinos. Especially trike drivers. Sort out the price BEFORE you hire. Check with hotel reception on typical prices. Check your change at street money changers. A friend of mine was passed a fake 1000 Peso note recently.

The bars may be able to get away with the lower amounts because the salary is plus commissions. The untold story is that if the BG lives in the bar house or mommasan house then her salary is mostly eaten up with rent and meals. The map was a minimum-wage map (each region had a different minimum wage). The daily minimum wages at that time ranged from about p125 to p500 (or such). Shortly thereafter I was in a northern Mindanao province visiting a dating site girl. She and her brother effectively ran an internet caf, owned by their uncle. The caf was open about 14 hours per day, 7 days / week. The girl and her brother worked exactly half (7 hours per day) the hours each day. She would open the place one day and work 7 hours, and he would relieve her and work the last 7 hours. Sometimes one of them would work fewer hours in a day (for this or that reason) and the other would work the extra hours. Or sometimes one of them would take an entire day or two off, while the other one would work the entire time. When the brother took a day off, the sister would take a different day off to keep the hours balanced. Or, when the sister would take 2 days to be with me (the brother would work it the entire time), she would give the brother some money (fresh from my pocket) so that she did not have to make up the missed time. How much did they earn? P100/ day for 14 hours. Not each person. The uncle paid p100/ day for the 14-hour workday (p50 each). The girl was fine with that (I was shocked). Aren't there minimum wage laws, I asked? She seemed certain there were. We were in Gaisano mall one day and I asked a sales girl the minimum wage per day. That lady was unsure and she asked several other sales ladies. One of them finally said the minimum was p130 in the area for 8 hour workday. As the shop is open everyday, there is no real way to take time away from it without burdening the other sibling. They work for months on end without a day off. When she is at work she must log in to a computer, and when they leave work they log out. She was late logging in one day and the uncle found out and threatened to fire her. She said she could not afford to lose the job as the family needed the money (one would think they might pressure the uncle to pay the minimum wage).
I also dated a Mindanao girl who had family on Siargao island. Its pretty remote there. In visiting the family we passed a sari-sari on the side of the dirt road, just a few blocks from the family home. We either rode by that sari on a habal or we walked by it several times. On one of those times we walked by, the girl's little sister, age 13, was standing inside the sari (there's not much to the thing, 4 walls with a large open window, its barely large enough for one person to stand in, about 4'x4' The girl said her sister gets p5/ hour to sell stuff. Minimum wage (and child labor) laws are often ignored in phils. When you have hundreds or thousands of people who want the job even at a reduced pay level, its easy to ignore the higher minimum wage. Even worse, many employers seem to rotate staff out on a regular basis, to spread the work around to more people.
As you know most Pinays love dining at Jolibees. I myself find their fried chicken and rice with a side order of buttered corn and pineapple juice pretty decent. I dislike the Jolibees near Checkpoint as I find it too crowed and dirty. There are a couple other options for Jolibee. They will deliver to most hotels within 30 minutes with a phone order.
The other option is to take the jeepney to the end of the run at Friendship. At the end of the run is the newer Jolibees. This one is not so busy and a lot cleaner. You can catch the return jeepney right in front of Jolibees.
BTW the jeepney price was rolled back to P7. 5 earlier and now recently have been rolled back further to P7.
In many countries laws are for the books only to show. None are enforced. People are too poor to care because there is no real process of complaining or challenging the work conditions, salary etc. People working are just too happy to get whatever little money they can earn. Collectively all the family money is pooled to put food on the table. Children generally have one good dress to wear for special occasions like weddings, church functions, school graduations etc. There are no child labor restrictions except on the books. Granted a 13 year old in a poor country is much more street smart and can manage a store by herself. It is quite safe in rural areas for locals.
Are they exploited. Of course yes. On the other side of the coin if they do not work they will be sitting at home which is a financial drain to the family. Do not be fooled by the friendly demeanor of the locals. If any of their children are threatened the whole village will fight back without regard to law and order.
Like you I have been to remote areas long time ago and experienced how the girls and their families live. I am sure many of our members have. To tell the truth it is depressing. As you know most Pinays love dining at Jolibees. I myself find their fried chicken and rice with a side order of buttered corn and pineapple juice pretty decent. I dislike the Jolibees near Checkpoint as I find it too crowed and dirty. There are a couple other options for Jolibee. They will deliver to most hotels within 30 minutes with a phone order.
The other option is to take the jeepney to the end of the run at Friendship. At the end of the run is the newer Jolibees. This one is not so busy and a lot cleaner. You can catch the return jeepney right in front of Jolibees.
BTW the jeepney price was rolled back to P7. 5 earlier and now recently have been rolled back further to P7.Filipinos have told me that the Jollibee just inside the Clark base area just across from Perimeter next to the large Petron station gives large good fried chicken pieces. Not easy to get there physically unless you have a car.

But you are right. 100 years ago there was also still a lot of poverty in my country (Holland) as well. Hell, even in the nineteen-seventies there were still slums in cities like Rotterdam. I remember that very well because we always passed them when we were travelling south to visit family.
They were not like the slums you see in the Phils but it came close.

Obviously Dg8787 you do not read the local Phills / Angeles newspapers, tourists have been murdered in robberies many times, few Koreans recently and a Brit on perimeter road in broad daylight a while back, robbed, murdered and body left on the street as I recall.
As for armed guards in banks not sure where you live but here in Thailand we have no armed guards in banks, in the whole of the united kingdom there is not one bank with an armed guard, I have visited most Asian countries and not seen an armed bank guard same for most of Europe.
Again as for malls, ATM machines, convenience stores, hotels only seen armed guards in phills from all the countries I have visited and there have been many countries.
Why do everyday good business owners of Angeles feel they need to pay large sums to employ armies of heavily armed security if its so safe, its because its full of thieves / robbers / murderers out there and they do not feel safe without the protection.

So yes, even AC seems OK if you behave normal and do not act stupid you will be fine, but it is still not a "safe" country as such compared to "western developed countries".
For me, after spending most of my time in Thailand the last 2-3 years, it feels much safer. There is less desperation and despair, and less "macho" culture among the men. You can of course find trouble also in Thailand, but I always feel more safe there.

I returned from my AC trip and stayed at the Central Park Tower and can confirm they do not ask for ID when escorted up, but they do call the room to let me know that they are leaving.
For anyone looking at Central Park Tower, I'd stay there again. Great location, easy to find (tall building visually can be seen, clean and new. The only downside is they only have 2 elevators so when it is busy you will have to wait a bit.
IMHO none of the hotels I stayed in asked for I. D. If you escort them in no questions will be asked. If they come by themselves reception will call you and certain M / S is downstairs for you. You need to say ok, send her up. They do not check I. D. They just ask the girl what her name is. When the girl leaves unescorted they call your room to get your permission for her to leave.
Almost all visitors are in AC for girls. So it is your own responsibility to make sure that the girl is of legal age. If you have taken the girl from the bar you are safe because bars nowadays make sure the girl is of legal age. It was not always the case before. There was a time girls of age 13-16 were hired to be dancers in the bar. Now there are frequent police raids to deter this practice..

Many who defend the right to bear arms will say that an armed society is a polite society.
Not sure how anyone can call Angeles city safe. If its so safe why does every hotel have security with automatic weapons / shotguns, why does every mall, every 7/11, even establishments that deal even in small amounts of cash have heavily armed guards.
Now if Angeles is so safe then why the need for all the weapons and the countless posts on every Angeles based forum about theft / pickpockets / scams.

A professional body guard that is licensed and knows what the hell he is doing will cost 1000 p per 12 hour shift.
On my monthly work / pleasure visits to Angeles and the phills my pinoy partners there insists we travel with security, not sure why anyone is so shocked to hear this.
Yes one can dig their head in the sand and claim it never happened to me so it does not happen.
I have a few post ago posted links to actual numbers of foreigners murdered in Angeles / Phills, considering such a very small number of foreigners actually visit the statistics are very high.

Paid his hotel, food etc. During 5-6 trips around the country we ran into some weird situations now and then (yes, maybe we pushed the limits a little.) so I was happy he was there to assist. I did not ask for a body guard and I am fairly fit myself, so I just felt I could handle every situation. But my girlfriend insisted and in hindsight I can understand better why. I soon learnt that it is helpful to be with someone who understand the "game" that is going on. Sometime it can be very subtle. Knowledge of traditions and language is of course also important. And he was a great guy, so no regrets. My point is that safety is also related to what you do, were you go and what situations you are willing to put yourself in. These days I travel alone in the Philippines, but I know a lot more about the culture now than I did on the first trips.

In more than 11 years here, I've had PNP or Philippine Marine guards a couple of times while on business in conflict areas, and at the insistence of the government. Other than that, even in Cotabato, Zamboanga and Marawi, I've never felt the need. Be interesting to hear Red Kilt's take on this as he's been here longer than I and has traveled fairly extensively in some of the more remote spots of Mindanao as I have.

The times that I have had PNP and Marine bodyguards whilst on official business were, for example, travelling from Davao to Cotabato; in Zamboanga when in the company of the Aust Ambassador; and in northern Mindanao between Malaybalay and across to Tandag and Bislig on the east coast.
In each case, I felt much more nervous with the security around me than I have felt when I was flying solo, as it seemed to draw attention to the fact that there must be VIPs in the convoy (despite my lowly status).
One of the senior executives of a major business in Manila always travels in a convoy of 3 large black 4 WDs (with him in the middle), and it was quite farcical to see him jogging near my condo each morning with 4 guys surrounding him as they went around the athletic track. When he arrives at his condo they leap out of the vehicles and scan the area like they have seen the Secret Service bodyguards of POTUS do. It's all a big wank and I guess it pumps up his ego.
