Greetings everyone,

I've started this new thread to provide a centralized location to catalog the Forum's best travel reports. Here's the idea:

If you have written one or several detailed travel reports, or if you know of such reports, then please post the link here.

You may also include a short summary of the nature of the report.

A sample report would be something like this:

You can copy and paste the link into a report, or you can do it the easy way and use the tags, which you would format like this:

[post]Post ID number here

You can identify the Post ID by moving your mouse pointer over the "Quote" button and reading the Post ID number in the Status Bar at the bottom of your browser window. It's the last number at the end of the link text, just after the letters "p=".

Please note: In order for this thread to be effective, it cannot turn into a discussion forum. I don't want to have to be so tough about this, but any reports that do not include a link to another report will be deleted.

I don't deserve to be the first person to post here, as there are many others who have written many more posts than me on the Hong Kong scene. But I have been to Hong Kong 5 times since 1992, and I'm a Senior Member both here on ISG (with around 70 posts) and on USA SG (with over 600 posts).

Since no one else has posted anything here yet, I'd like to start the ball rolling (so to speak) by referring to an old post I wrote about Mongkok. Although the post refers to my 2002 visit, most of the info is still relevant:

Are these prices in HK currency or U. S.? If HK, what is the current exchange rate. I am planning a trip in the near future and this sounds like something I would be interested in, especially if it's better than 141. The report makes it sound like 141 is not that good. The girls I saw there were very beautiful. Am I missing something.

Rick is using Hong Kong dollars in his report. The Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the U.S. dollar and the exchange rate stays fairly constant. It's roughly 7.8 HK dollars to the US dollar. I find it easiest to take the HK amount and multiply by .13 (I can do that in my head easier than dividing by 7.8!) - so HK$400 is roughly US$52.

If I may add, another reason it is reasonably safe to go to those 141 buildings is that the girls pay rent to the building owners and therefore are under the protection of the building owners who are either in the "protection business" themselves or pays for the protection of the whole building. You can't own a building in Monkok without protection, and property insurance alone is not enough.Wilde,

Anyway, reason I'm responding is because lately I've had a few discussions regarding ownership of 141 property. Numbers go something like this (info I have is for Hop Yee). About US200-250k to buy half a floor. Each half floor, you get 4 rooms. Rent is around US1. 25k (HKD 10k) per month if you can manage 100% occupancy, you're bringing in US5k monthly. At that rate of return, you get your money back in a little over 4 years, which is pretty much unheard of in the property markets that I'm familiar with. So the discussions I had with some buddies were, "what's the catch? ". Cause it seemed too good to be true. Basically came to the same conclusion as you stated above, that it must be gangster-backed somehow.

So sort of curious. You know this for a fact or worked the to that conclusion the same way that I did? I forgot to ask this point when I was talking to the 141 girl about it.
