Have just returned from 3 weeks in LOS. Spent most of my time in BKK with a little sojurn to Pattya. Just thought I would share a few thoughts and impressions on some of the areas visited.

I stay in soi 4 in a little place called white orchid inn at 700baht a night, maybe cheap for some but it has a bed, air con, hot shower, television and the staff are friendly and helpful. It also leaves more money for my favourite pastimes beer and the ladies.

Nana area
Only went into the Plaza a couple of times and what with the bombs going off and the state of the plaza (1 way in 1 way out), was glad to have visited there earlier in my trip. Places to visit Rainbow 4 and Angelwitch - cute girls in both places. Be careful as their are so many katoeys about.

In the carpark you can find some gems but again katoeys are everywhere and seem to be hanging around further up the soi away from sukhumvit also.

Soi Cowbow
Is certainly in my opinion much better, Sharks, Baccara my favourites...real quality girls in both places for a bit of fun Jungle Jims for the extreme groping.

Biergarten
I found some real gems in there this trip about 4.30pm in the afternoon seemed a great time, plenty of younger girls (18+ of course), was a bit hit and miss but i found the quality there much better than other trips.

Soi 7/1 (Soi Eden)
This soi of beer bars etc is really pumping, some more than others but i enjoyed many an early evening in the Downunder Bar overlooking the ladies before venturing out. There is even a gogo bar called magic table in the soi since i last visited.

Soi 22
Lots of little gems in this area, was not pumping with farangs but their were some hotties down there, worth the trip, the price, and the experience.

Patpong
Full of Katoeys and for me the gogos are a place to avoid.

Pattya
Was pumping most nights. I really enjoyed Angelwitch, Club Boesche and a few others that I can't remember the names of. Some good happy hours prices, some great shows and some very nice ladies. Lots of ladies in the beer bars and some gems if you can be bothered looking

Cost
All in all in Bangkok the girls seem to be asking ridiculous prices at the moment, but never fall for that, overall I paid about 1500baht some 1000baht longtime, even with the gogo girls.

You do have to be careful sometimes with any P4P gals in LOS as I've come across more than my fair share of them hooked on Yabba. They all react differently to this, some are almost comatose while others are acting out fantasies. Sometimes you cant spot them until its too late. One started taking it while she was riding me. So could look ok when you 1st pick them up.

I you don't dicuss the price beforehand, this is really the girl's problem. It means she thinks she may get more out of you by leaving it to your discretion.
These days, top Nana bar girls probably expect more than 2000 Baht for a Long Time job. Cheaper and more desperate girls are avaliable. However I know some girls that suggest the guy go have a wank if he says 1000 Baht for a short time. But might be safer to discuss it to avoid misunderstandings.
Although many girls have gone with me without discussing price. They can probably tell I'm not a stingy type and I always pay well if service was good.
I would happily pay a high quality bar girl 3000 Baht for the whole night assuming at least 2 pops. I hate wasting my limited time more so than the extra Baht. However I haven't taken a bargirl for whole night for a long time now.

Guys

In the context of this forum I have a slightly unusual question.

I'm coming to Bangkok in March accompanied by a female (I know, what a stupid thing to do!).

Can anybody therefore recommend the best places to take an open-minded woman in terms of the erotic side of Bangkok? I was considering the following:

Of the last two dozen Thai ladies I have "encountered" I would say like 20 of them have been dead-fish/underperformers.

I am averaging like 8 or 9 dead-fish out of every 10 ladies. This can't be normal!

To give some background: They are mostly Pattaya beer-bar ladies (but not all) Average about 22 y/o, no stunners or beauties; but some are "cute".

They choose me. We seem to get along fine. Until we get to the room.

there are lots of different types of looks in isaan which is what makes it's people interesting. i've written about it extensively in the past. i could probably teach you a thing or two about the ethnographic history of the region in terms of the variety of appearances, as well as language and cultural differences.

for example, mukdahan has a very significant strain of vietnamese blood while roi et has a strong mix of chinese which results in both provinces having people of a different look and whiter skin than say those from udon thani who tend to be more ethnically lao and a bit darker. all three provinces also speak different dialects of isaan-lao.

i could go on and on in this cultural lesson - no generalizations here, mate.

however o**** makes generalizations in his post below about isaan girls. those close to the border with laos are more ethnically lao. those in other areas are quite different. you can't just use a term like "isaan girls" to make a statement, because it's a big region with a lot of cultural mixing.

CM2 was still full of them the last time I was there. A few of them hang out near the street entrance to the joint, but most of them are towards the back past the band stage area. Prices: they generally start off asking for ridiculous amounts; 6-5k baht l/t, but you can generally get them down to 3k. No idea about s/t.

There are quite a few on Soi 3 around where Grace Hotel is. You can often find them walking along the street there earlier in the day, but personally I find them pretty skanky compared with the better CM2 ones (YMMV).

There were a few hanging out in Spasso (Hyatt Erawan) last month; much better-looking but I didn't ask prices.

There is a selection of them at the Rajak Hotel coffeeshop, just off Soi 4.Nana. Most a bit skanky, but some kwality too. Ya gotta talk to the Thai pimp first, ladies wouldn't talk to me-I was quoted 3000 Baht ST. I passed.

The point, as you say, is “not being tied down,” which you do recognize is valuable. Love is wonderful and long term relationships are great, but the price, while often worth it, is always much higher than p4p situations. With p4p it’s just money, but with “regular girls” it’s also feelings, emotions, families, and all the other heavy baggage which inevitably goes with them. If you ever actually live here, it will be a lot different. Although not a guarantee, I bet you'd give up P4P mongering, eventually because you'd realize the girls aren't that nice, the quality isn't there, they're low-class and aren't to your taste, anymore.

As I've said before, most expats worth a damn don't want to be seen with these girls in public, even just going to a short-time hotel. if they monger at all, most play the more discreet Thai market of massage parlors etc.

The exceptions to this are the low-class scum living in Pattaya who never get past the sex-tourist mind-set.

This is the result of 8 days of mongering in Bangkok.

1 - Practicalities

1.1 Transport
- I intended to use the Airport Express (150 baths) but I realized that a taxi would cost only 300 baths to go to the center of the city. Do not answer to those proposing a limousine service inside the airport but go outside and queue like any ordinary thai. Fare is 250 + highway toll (65). Best value for money.
- Conversely, I strongly recommend the use of BTS and MRT subway instead of taxis in the city because of the traffic jam. They are easy to understand (english available), safe, quick, air conditionned, never over-crowded and very cheap. Buy a monthly card with 20 trips or a 3-days unlimited card. Almost all the parlours and bars can be reached with BTS and MRT. Some taxi will try to overcharge you if you want a drop off at a massage parlour.

1.2 Accommodation
Go-go bars are located in three areas: Patpong, Nana Plazza (Soi 3) and Soi Cowboy (Soi 23). My advice is to choose an hotel in the Sukhumvit road area beetween Soi 3 and 23, so that you will be at a walking distance (10 minutes) from these two last hotspots. I chose the Grand Business Inn which is reasonably cheap (1600 baths), girlfriendly (they just ask the guest ID which is safe for you) and close to Nana BTS station. Free internet wireless access in the lobby. It is also at a walking distance from one soapie : Plazza Entertainment. Sometimes too much noisy because of the inn and out of mongerers and in the morning because of nearby repairs. Maybe there are some other hotels in this area that could be a little bit better in this regard.

2 - General considerations

2.1 Where to go
Basically, you have two main ways to get FS in BKK : massage parlours (soapies) and go-go bars.
- Soapies open and close earlier than bars. You choose a girl behind a window (usually refered as "fishbowl") or on a catalogue. You get a 2 hours session with shower, different sort of massage, FS or other special service. Close at midnight, so last bird should turn up at 10pm. Cost vary from 2,500 to 5,000 baths.
- Bars are open up to 2am. You can choose a girl for a short or long term session (the whole night in your place), but half do only ST. LT cost is from 3,000 to 4,000 + barfine 500 baths, unless you bargain which I never do.
- Free lancers and high-class escort in nightclubs are said to be widely available, but I have not explored this possibility nor the escorts agencies to be found in many touristical leaflets distributed at my hotel. There were no many reasons to do that because of the variety of choice that the above have to offer.
- My advice : if you are in BKK for a couple of days or less, visit the soapies. You will have a larger selection and enjoy a massage that you will never get elswhere. Bars require a more elaborated strategy (see hereafter). If you stay 3 days or more, organize your day as follows:
- morning : visit of the main touristical sites which close at 3pm. Once you have found a gem, take her on tour on one of these boats on the river.
- afternoon : soapies from 4pm onward. Recharge.
- night : gogo bars for LT session and early morning shot.

2.2 What strategy in gogo bars?
Thai girls are definitly pretty, because they are slim and look younger than their age. Although this is not the majority, there are some with larger breasts than I could immagine, whether natural or enhanced. But that is not the most important : what's crazy with them is that they offer a genuine GFE service. Unbelievable. Even DFK which is not supposed to be in thai habits is now a must for most of them.
Even though the majority will not fancy you, there is such a number of choice that you should find a pretty to stunning girl every night. However, this can be achieved if you come either early to the bars or get to know more about who's working where and do ST or LT.
Each time you enter in a bar, you want to order a drink (120 baths) otherwise you'll be arrassed all the time and you want to have time to consider all options. One day, I spent like 500 baths in "ladies drinks" but the investment was worth the try because I got a real cutie with the assistance of a "second bar lady". I was surprised to see that really good looking girl (8 or above) were still available at 2am, even though my target is the slim waist-large breast type, but there were still many guys around and I said to myself: but what do not they just pick them when it's closing time?

3. - Soapies
You have to look at Giotto's review in the massage section and the following link : www.nightlife.thaigirlbride-thaiwomanwife.com to know how to find them easilly:

- Plazza Entertainment: Cupidy is more expensive than Delila upstairs but I got an excellent service in the first case : my masseuse was classy and looked really younger than her 34 years old, we had an interesting discussion about prostitutes, she was very open-minded and honest. In particular she warned me not to fall in love and send some money to any fiancee.
- Poseidon: impecable hygiene and professional service. VIP models are available from 6pm.
- Angel: Photo models are fair, price cheap and good selection of girl. Probably very good value for money but I did not have time to explore more than once, and my choice was not the best one. Was busy at 6pm so the choice limited.

4 - Go-go bars

5 - Last say
One of the reason why this report is not comprehensive is that I have fallen in love with a thai I have known through internet, so not a bar girl, and ... and she is more horny than any of my previous GF! We had great sex the last 3 days so things have been quite quickly. She is not in love with me but she said she wanted to know everything about me before I leave, even sexually. I know this isn’t the most popular of topics to discuss but I would be very interested in getting some feed back on it from the locals, ex-pats, BKK regulars and first timers. Has anyone picked up any nasty STDs or bugs while mongering in Bangkok. If, so what did you get a how did you get it. (ie were you wearing a condom at all times and still picked something up). What is the most common STD that I am likely to encounter? Are the women in certain areas more likely to carry STDs?

I know there are certain inherent dangers to this hobby but I’m trying to minimize them as much as possible. Right now I’m just trying to figure out how much actual risk I will be in for a week.

I am sure everyone with have their own ideas on this topic, but i suppose i am an example of a monger who has never picked up anything in 8 years - however i must admit most of my activity has been in beijing and i am very careful and normally target the high cost - more educated - class of girl. I have come to the conclusion that this hobby can never be risk free - so you need to consider that before taking it up. Saying that there are a lot of things you can do to minimise the risk - which you can find on the section on STD's thread - or even on the general internet. However one point, my mate in SEOUL picked up Clamydia from DATY - which while easily treated - was a STD. So be careful and be aware. Blood, saliva, semen and vaginal fluids are all vectors.

my gf is issan also from ubon (my very first issan gf and the best) and is neither dark not white, but just right

A couple of things to add.
Many guys get girls from beer gardens ( I suppose these are sort of bars) but a little different. I believe these girls are cheeper in general but may be not so gorgeous.
Another important method is girls on the street (I never tried this method until was a Budhhist holiday and everything else was closed). So got forced into it. Turned out I chose a rather ordinary girl first up, so simply went out and got another one. 2nd time lucky. 3rd time also lucky. Pays to spend time chatting them up first.
I also have also been to go to "morning bars" when I wanted sex before Soapies opened.

Soi Cowboy has nude dancing (not just topless) in some bars these days, e.g. Long Gun, Suzi Wong. Deja Vu, etc.
Shark has semi see-through underwear but not nude I believe.
Baccarat girls are in school uniform but no panties underneath, a novelty that wears off quickly. I prefer to look at tall good looking girls totally nude.
Unfortunately this means Long Gun, and having to just put up with the shows, some are artistic and some are ugly weird. The amount of time for nude girls is therefore reduced by the shows.

The idea is to choose the lady and not have her choose you. If she is aggressive, thats a definite no-go. Actually a slightly shy girl can be good fun.
Get over your shyness. Take time to choose and choose wisely.
Watch a girl for a fair time. If she puts on too grimaces when talking to her friends. Forget her. If she puts on an act, forget her.
If she seems to like to have fun and smiles a lot, O.K this is good.
Talk first and see how she talks.
With these procedures in Bangkok, I rarely get a bad girl.

I don't know about those brothels, but by Laos girls, I mean't girls born in the Country of Laos, e.g. Vientiane (Wianchan)
Issan girls are commonly called Laos girls as a slightly derogatory term because they're local dialect is closer to Laos Language than to central Thai.
But I noticed in Vientiane that the real Laos girls looked somewhat different to the Issan girls (faces tended to be more rounded).

i'm not taking sides with oth on this issue. this means i'm not trying to watch his back or defend his conclusions, but even so, i agree with his generalization. that said, i am also not beating up on you either.

my experience in bangkok has also led me to the conclusion that isaan hookers are rude, crude, and generally unattractive (not so much in the physical sense, but unattractive because they are rude and crude).

when i first moved to thailand i was a typical newbie and most of the long-timers always seemed to be beating up on me. i (as almost all newbies do) took their comments harshly and had countless disputes with them, but in the end the long timers were not wrong.

i still frequent the upper sukhumvit area almost everyday to study the human condition as i am more interested in its imperfections than its perfections (if there are any). that said, i do not enjoy walking down the street with isaan hookers anymore. it doesn't bother so much at night when most of the normal people are in their homes, but i avoid being seen with them in the daytime for two reasons:

1) it's not good for my image and 2) i don't want to cause bad feelings in the hearts and minds of normal thai people. i am sure the sight of a farang with a thai hooker must be quite repulsive to them. the latter reason is the most important reason for me because i don't work in thailand, therefore i don't need to guard "my image" as closely as the expats who work here.

i don't know what event triggers the average expat to form the opinion that isaan hookers are rude and crude, but i know exactly what triggered it for me. it was the day i was walking down soi 4 and i overheard a group of isaan hookers talking about someone and that someone was me. this day was also the first time i realized i was beginning to be fluent with the thai language. it was as if a huge veil had been lifted from my eyes and i was able to see for the first time and consequently, my innocense was lost. and as all of us on this board should know, virginity is lost one time only.

i still speak with my second girlfriend and she is still an isaan hooker. we are now best friends and i will always love her. but even so, i am many times more than a little shy or embarrassed when i am with her around normal people because she is rude and crude. actually, she is not at all a rude person, but her actions and her speech are so crude that a normal person might very well condemn her as both rude and crude.

here's a very good recent example. she came over to my house a few days ago just before sunrise because she needed to borrow some money. i went out to meet her on the soi because she didn't even have enough money to pay her taxi fare. after taking care of the taxi we began walking to my apartment and suddenly she remembered that she forgot to call her friend.

at this time of the morning on my soi there are a large number of food vendors preparing their food stalls for the onslaught of hungry people that will soon be rushing to work. my ex-girlfriend stopped to retrieve her mobile phone and the particular place we stopped was well within earshot of the food vendors. once she dailed her friends number the fate of my upcoming embarrassment was sealed.

after waiting for her friend to answer the phone my ex-girlfriend began to speak in the same loud and crude voice that is typical of an isaan hooker. her greeting with her friend was particularly loud because she extremely happy her friend answered the phone. this happy greeting to her friend was not at all rude in her mind because it's just hooker talk, but normal people consider hooker talk to be both rude and crude.

the happy word of greeting that was practically shouted into the phone was, "ee dawk!" this is an extremely vulgar and degrading word that is normally used as an interjection for the very purpose of being rude. after hearing this i immediately put my finger to my mouth attempting to get my ex to speak in a soft voice, but instead she started speaking even louder because my attempts to quiet her were interpreted as interference and her act of speaking louder basically meant that i should shut up until she was off the phone.

at this point all ears were focused directly on the two of us and nary a food vendor was working anymore because they were listening to us. i live on a very respectable soi that is not anywhere near nor associated with sukhumvit and these food vendor are not exactly poor themselves. in fact, more than a few of them are associated with the owners of my apartment building!

so in the end, most isaan hookers are rude and crude in the same way that most scorpion are dangerous. a scoria stings you because stinging is what scorpion do and an isaan hooker is rude and crude because being rude and crude is what isaan hookers do.

in conclusion, although my ex has paid the money back to me, she is still a very crude girl. ;)

mick licker's point, however, is valid. while these generalizations are, in the majority, valid - they are, however, generalizations which are not always true, and the exceptions to these general traits can, in fact, be exceptional.

Of course, everyone is different, and there are exceptions. But, I stand by what I have said and appreciate the experienced comments of Poster Lion, despite his not attempting to "watch my back" and agree with me. The vast majority of Isaan hookers are what I said they are. It doesn't mean they are evil or bad. It simply means they are...well...rude, crude and speak badly.

This woman you met may have been presentable and spoken English well (although, I wonder what her Thai is like). She may be a lovely woman in your eyes. But, for better or worse, Thais are very judgemental. They might well see through the thin veil of respectability that you can't penetrate. To you, this woman might seem polite and well-turned out. But to a Thai, she may appear totally crass. Despite your experiences here, you're still a visitor and don't know the nuances of the culture. While Thais would be polite to her. I doubt they would accept her into their society, unless they were of a similar status. But, of course, it depends on behavior. Westerners constantly judge Thais' preoccupation with heirarchy and status from a western perspective and thus are always highly critical of Thais' classism and apparent hypocricy. But, it is their culture, not ours. Unless you're one of those expats who lives in a Farang bubble (and there are lots of those), after awhile you begin to see things from the Thais' POV. One thing that one slowly starts to recognize are behavioral differences.

Poster Lion's epiphany is probably similar to mine. The moment I was able to understand enough Thai and Isaan dialect to know what was being said and HOW it was being said,, not to mention, the moment I dated my first regular TG and saw how she dressed, acted, spoke and behaved, I realized how unacceptable these women were. More to the point, I realized what many of them think about Farang. If most visitors knew exactly what these women think about them, they might have a different opinion.

Because this is an exotic foreign land and these girls look exotic as well, visitors begin to wax poetic about them, not realizing that once you're as familiar with them as you are with women from your own country and culture, you begin to separate them into appropriate and inapproriate, just as you would at home.

Many of these girls are the equivalent of the 'hillbillies' and 'trailer trash' one sees on the Jerry Springer Show in the US. Would you date one of those?

Thai women, whatever their status are trained by the culture to be flirtatious, charming and to cater to a man. This is what the vistor first sees. Bargirls and the like are excellent at this. But, "once the microphone and camera are off", their true selves come out.

Once you get submerged in the culture and are able to discern the subtleties of Thai women and see how a proper Thai woman acts and speaks, you'll truly see the difference.

And lest you think this is a condemnation of all Isaan girls, I offer the following story.

On my last birthday, my Isaan GF (educated and middle-class) and I went out with a friend, his Isaan GF (ex-Soi Cowboy), and his parents, who were visiting from Europe. My friend's GF, who I had always basically liked (and still like, despite her background) for some reason "let her guard down", spoke Thai in the most appalling manner and generally acted like an ill-bread country bumkin, (which she is) and more significantly, like the hooker that she, until recently had been. His parents, having been here numerous times and been acquainted with their son's numerous Thai GFs over the years were tuned in enough to catch at least some of this and were not impressed. But, what got me was my GF's reaction. She was very polite and kind to my friend's hick GF to the point that I thought she liked her. But, she was just being the polite, well-brought-up girl that she is, because once we left and were alone, she went off like a rocket about my friend's GF: about how she was dressed (skimpy top and hot-pants), and how rude she was, especially because she didn't take care of my friend's parents, (serve them food etc.) which a good Thai girl would do.

My GF's dislike for my friend's GF stems from the girl's lack of proper Thai behavior and respect because this is central to the culture.

That is the main point of my argument. Most of the women in P4P, even if not educated and from the lower classes would normally still have a modicum of proper Thai decorum, if it were not for the fact that they have been co-opted by the hooker life. Once that happens, they rarely change back.

I visited Grace hotel bar the other day. There were many russians, but unfortunately, many of them had attitude problems. I approached a few and was quoted 4000-5000Bhatt for LT (it was about 1am). What puzzled me that some of them quoted the price while making sour faces and immediately turning their faces away. I agree. The flip side of this issue is the mongers themselves. The girls are corrupted in the business and become jaded quickly because they have to shag revolting, crude and rude Farang who, as you say don't know how to talk to a woman or treat them properly. It's obvious that travelling alone is better, but I can sympathize with you. My GF wants to see the beaches and check out the sites in LOS. Are we able to book Air Asia flights from the States? I need to get from Macau to BKK and they have great flights at about $100 one way. Only problem is that their web site will not allow me to book and buy? Anyone have a solution?I had the same problem. I just called them and after about 40 minutes of explaining over and over and over again I was able to book a flight. I think. Time will tell.

I think it asks what your country of origin is and then just gives you flights from that country. I think also, it asks for like a province or somethign and then rejects it when you put in your state.

asia.com is a good site but after traveling to BKK from LAX 5 times last year I found that the best prices were, by far, on China Airlines webpage. He said the everyonne but he and another Canadian couple next to him went through immigration. He states that after he made a fuss abd requested supervisors that he and the other couple were quickly and quitely taken through immigration outside the presence of other passengers. Have you encountered this? Just thought I'd post for information purposes. He flew out of SFO in December 2006.

Just got back from BKK and Phuket (will post on there on Phuket board).

Well I had a great time!! On the first night, I took newbie friends to nana plaza and as it was 2 days after the NYE bombings it was dead, which meant there were alot of girls to choose from! Look for the holigram. A schoogirl haircut could be a clue something isn't right. If the pic doesn't match or if it is a beat up ID, or something doesn't seem right do not take chances. So a Thais age is worked out normally (they will turn 1 year old 1 year after birth).
Subtract 543 from the Thai Year (Phutthasakharart - the buddhist era) to get the western year number, not 943 (as in Buledaddy's post).

I don't quite get this. As to my knowledge the IDs show the birthdate rather than the age, so do your maths. Unless the ID is fake. But then you wouldn't know the age anyway.

Yes, I was assuming everyone knows most official ID's (including mine and yours) shows only DOB and must do some simple math to derive the age. I sometimes have a difficult time doing simple math after a few beers and I'm staring at a pretty face and nice boobs, so carrying a pocket calculator for me is a must.

As with the age 19 rule, its just a suggestion. I usually follow this rule when I'm in any Asian country (LOS included) so I dont have to remember all them details. Note that I normally play it safer than to be sorry later.

One surprising thing (to me) about living in Bangkok is that life here is the same as life anywhere in the world after enough time passes. I don't think everyone will agree with me on that, but that is how I've viewed my existence on this planet for as long as I can remember. The t-shirt that reads, "same same but different" would be more correct if it read, "same same no difference."

The thing that is probably most surprising to me is that I have never seen anything during my life in Bangkok that I haven't already seen during my previous life in America. Maybe (most probably) my normal lifestyle or existence has not been confined within the boundaries of the "normal" or "bell shaped" curve. That's a bit of an exaggeration, but it isn't far from the truth.

Obviously, you still like it there and have assimilated the language and culture. I envy your courage and your guts after so many told you that you'd crash and burn. Well, I suppose you did crash a few times but you didn't burn.

I have set myself on fire once or twice after having delusions of monk-hood, but I always seem to save myself with a quick shower before any major scar tissue develops.

2) My dad's girlfriend of 25 years has colon cancer and will have surgery in February. If she passes away soon, I am very (VERY) afraid my father won't be far behind. Did you ever read, "where the red fern grows"? This is a sad thing for me to say, but it's true nonetheless. I may not have much time left with my Dad and I still don't know him as well I want to know him.

I thought you were a bit of a veteran and knew BKK well. There are loads of good International restaurants of all kinds, including French. There are much better Japanese restaurants (and cheaper too) than at Tokyu (not Tokyo) at MBK, in the Japanese sois starting at Sukhumvit soi 33/1 and going as far as Thong Lor.

While I don't agree with Poster that living here is the same as living anywhere (and I've been here a lot longer than he has), I do agree that one gets into a routine as one does anywhere and it becomes "home" and conversely home becomes strange and foreign (I'm not comfortable in Canada anymore).

What's different? It's much cheaper, of course, but can be expensive if you want to live like a Westerner. I think the lifestyle is generally better and there's less stress, if you're adaptable. Although if you work here, there's certainly still stress and pressure. However, one has to be realistic about the infrastructure. Bangkok is not Vancouver, for instance. But, it doesn't have the crime and decay of many American cities, either. It's one of the few places where an old geezer can continually get young women (not necessarily P4P) and as well, not look particularily embarassing with a young thing on his arm (as long is she's not too obviously a Ho).

High paying jobs? - well generally few and far between unless you work for a multi-national, you're a lawyer for one of the handful of Farang law firms, or you're a professor who can get into one of the very few universities (like where I work) that pay Farang, Western-level salaries.

I think the ideal for most is to do what you proposed: make a lot of money somewhere else and spend your leisure time here.

as far as French restaurants are concerned, the ones you have in the tourist guides are overrated and overly expensive. I usually go to "Chez Philippe" on soi 39 and the Food is the same as if you were sitting in a cafe in PAris (where I have been living most of my life).

In 2004 I got the bright idea that maybe it was time to head back west after being here nearly 8 years. I quit my job, and gave all my stuff to my then-GF's family. I'd been offered a job teaching at Cornell. But, as tempting as it was, both in terms of salary and status, the thought of languishing (there's no other word for it) in f-ing Ithaca, New York through your average white-out, freezing upstate New York winter was more than I could fathom. So, I compromised and went for a teaching job in The Bahamas, which paid less, but was tax-free, and thinking I was merely trading one paradise for another. The Bahamas is a pleasant enough place with excellent weather (except for the 2 hurricanes I went through) and beautiful beaches. But, it's just a satellite of the US, as Florida is a heartbeat away and American culture booms out from every nook and cranny. And, the women are fat, ugly as shit and always in your face. However, Cuba was only about 1 hour away by plane. So, at least I had the pleasure of lovely Cuban women for mongering. But, I don't really like mongering and quite simply, I missed regular Thai women, especially all the sweet, enchanting and sexy students I had left behind.

Also, many other aspects of the life I had enjoyed in Thailand were just not there. I watched American TV a lot, went home to Canada a couple of times, put on an incredible amount of weight because of the change in diet from Thai food to the much inferior western food, and worked for a miserable College with haughty, arrogant Bahamians who treated foreigners far, far worse than Thais ever do. Above all, I could not get over how moody and aggressive and down-right nasty everyone was, especially in the States. For example: Whatever happened to the calm, reasoned journalism of Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings? Now you have the shrill, bullying punks epitomized by Bill O'Reilly on the male side and on the female side, that **** of cunts (there's no other word for her) Anne Coulter. These two are symptomatic of what is wrong with America.

So, despite the obvious conveniences of Western civilization compared to the sometimes challenging aspects of living in LOS, I began to wither and die there. My health deteriorated in the face of a healthcare system that didn't seem to care, at a cost that seemed staggeringly high compared to the cheap and privileged care Farang get in Thailand.

It dawned on me very quickly that I simply didn't belong in the West, anymore. So, after suffering through 9 months of my 2-year contract, I did a runner back to LOS.

Although, there are times I'm really sick of it here and contemplate another shot at going home, I force myself to remember every moment of that 9 months to shake myself out of such thoughts. There are, afterall many more positives than negatives living here. So, realizing all of this, I finally went home to Canada last summer and got rid of all my stuff, which I had "temporarily" stored in my mother's basement in 1996 while I went on my 6-month sabbatical to Asia. The 6 months turned into 10 years.

So, while I do plan to take a standing offer in Dubai in a few years to make some quick cash, because at least Dubai is within striking distance of Thailand, I plan on retiring here.

There's no place quite like it on earth.

Very nicely written comments and very true! once you have sampled life in LOS (as an expat) is it quite difficult to re-adapt to western lifestyle.

However, I believe that if one wants to make some Cash, Thailand IS the place where you could make it. In fact, I would pick Thailand over Dubai.

While Salaries are quite Similar (when converted to US$), Cost of Living in LOS is far Cheaper than UAE... by far.

Since I am in Thailand (2 years now) I am saving money like never before, except for Rent and Mongering, I have no expenses :)

Well, yes I am biased against the extreme right which is why I don't live in The US or Canada. Anne Coulter is an ignorant, ill-informed, bigotted commentator who's opinions are dangerous. In contrast, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw and Walter Cronkite, as well as being anchors were also commentators, just fair and even-handed. The days of that kind of journalism are long gone in the US.

no problem, though. but, i would suggest...and this isn't meant as an attack, just a suggestion...that, while i understand your point and you were correct, please don't join the growing chorus of dictatorial newbie posters who seem to lately be preaching on what and how each thread and this board should be used (look at cyberspace as a glaring example). most senior members who've been around for awhile tend to be more tolerant and just enjoy the free-flow nature of things. part of it has to do with the fact that we've seen it all and heard it all before. so, some like me are perhaps a little "too jaded" (haha) to get worked up about things going off topic - like the occasional comment (without pic) made on the photo section.

I would add the infamous (Angel) Disco of Ill Repute to your short list because, even though many if not all of the long-timers will roll their eyes at this suggestion, it is worthy for a couple or maybe a few reasons:

That said, an old-timer (myself included) will tell you that Angel Disco is more of the very same standard fare that is on your short list already, but there is at least one major difference.

Those names are somewhat famous, but Angel Disco must be one of the most famous Disco's in the world. I'll bet more men recognize the name of this Disco inside the Nana Hotel than the name of Thailand’s famous female pop star, Tata Young. By the way, not only should you add this to your short list, you should go tonight man! What do ya think?

The epiphany lurking inside Angel Disco manifests itself to the newbie in several ways:

1) Wow! There is a f-u-c-k-i-n-g-butt-load-ton of ladies in here!

The long-timers (myself included) have just finished sneering a long hard sneer that crept up onto their faces after reading reason number 3. Since we're kind of on the subject of discos, (I'm not exactly sure) have you, as an "old timer" ever ventured beyond the well-worn haunts - say to the Thai discos of Rachada soi 4-8, or over on Thong-Lor and Ekamai, Colisseum on Sukhumvit or way out to Tawan Daeng on Patanakarn? While you aren't guaranteed to get laid as these places, they do have loads of girls you wouldn't ever meet at P4P venues. Tawan Daeng is always full of Isaan girls particularly on weekends. If you're Thai is passable (better even, if you can speak Isaan) you certainly can approach the girls. I've always had lots of fun and pretty good luck at these places.

I'm just returning from BKK. It was my second trip there in the last four months. Before I get started on my reports I would like to post a few observations.

1. Ladyboys are generally taller than the average Thai male. A female friend who made the trip with us attributed this to taking hormones, but I always thought that taking hormones would stunt growth, not accelerate it.

2. Thais do not like farangs, but love our money. I found this out on several occaisions. I went into a store to look at some souvenirs. I enquired about the price. I told the lady that her price of 450 was too high. She threw me out of the store and cursed me out in Thai. I later bought the exact trinket in Suam Lum for 200. Same thing happens if you go to a bar or massage parlor. You must spend money as soon as you walk in or they want to throw you out. We were walking around in NEP and one lady damn near killed herself rushing us into a bar. But when we did not want to buy anything right away she threw us out.

3. People think that all Americans like George Bush because he is the president of the United States. We were sitting in a tuk-tuk waiting for the light to change when another tuk-tuk with women of Arab decent pulled next to us. They were enraged with us because they could tell we were American and assumed we liked George Bush.

4. It is harder to get a taxi if you insist on them running the meter. This is especially true at tourist places because the drivers know that they can get more money from the next tourist who will not want them to run the meter. I guess most tourist ask for a price from point A to point B instead of having them run the meter. Drivers kept asking 200 from NaNa to Wat Traimit saying that there was much traffic. When I finally got someone who would run the meter I ended up paying 75 for the trip. A couple of taxis at Wat Po threw us out for asking them to turn the meter on. Last night at 4am going to the airport the driver wanted to charge 500 from NaNa. I had to damn near fight with him half way down the street to get him to turn the meter on. The meter price ended up being 175, whereas my friends behind us in the other taxi did not feel like arguing and paid a flat 300.

5. Most ladyboys will tell you right off that they are not a woman so I don't see how people say they were tricked. On one occaision I approched what I thought was a girl in the car park. The first words out of her mouth was, "I am a man." Rip-offs in tourist shops and over-charge happen everywhere - including the US shopping malls where you got systematically over-charged without any chance to bargain either. Also, I personally had absolutely ever had any problem with the meter taxi - but like everywhere in the world, mega-tourist places call for their shares of touts. And in many other countries (first or third world), you would pay 10 times more for a taxi fare, meter or no meter.

As for me, Thailand remains as a whole one (if not the) best country where people are polite, smile and return a smile if you do smile first (and that includes security guards, policemen and unknown people in the street), are helpful, and do not try to steal from you. So please post a report with your positive experiences about this beautiful place, which will make you forget about the few negatives ones. That will help you to bring more positive memories and mindset - and that contributes to remove the Bush syndrom.

I certainly understand what you are talking about, however, please let me give you my personal experience on some of the issues you reported:

1. Ladyboys are not always Taller than the average Thai Male, look at some of the Hi,-So and Actresses or models (all females) Thai, they are really tall. I notice also that a high number of Thai men are also above the 180cm mark.

2. Hhmm. I am french and could say the same for my fellow countrymen. It is all a matter of behaviour. I have always treated people in Thailand with respect and they have always treated me very well. Smiling goes a long way; )

Yes, sometimes you will encounter some bitter door people (especially in NEP Gogo bars) just ignore them and walk around the bar as if they do not exist. They have no right to lay a finger on you and you are welcome to remind them not to touch you. Mostly they will leave you alone.

3. A few Arab Women's opinion hardly qualify as a benchmark of what "People" in Thailand think; )

4. The Law in Thailand in regards to taxis is that they MUST drive you to your desired destination and MUST turn the meter on.

Now that this is clear, the reality is that many drivers will refuse to take you to some places (depending on their mood, traffic.) and yes, sometimes will not turn the meter on. If this happends, remind them to put the meter on. If they refuse, have them stop and get out of the cab (leave the door open as to inconvenience the Taxi driver, he will be furious having to get out of his cab to close the door)

5. No sir! A lot of ladyboys will not tell you a thing. Then when in the room, they'll only give you a BJ. Ladyboys are on the Prowl usually late at night hoping to get some drunk customers. ; )

I found a website called learningthai.com and from there I've plucked about 30 words and phrases that I thought would be useful. I'm making an effort to try to embrace the culture as much as possible while I'm there for a week. What Thai phrases to you use or hear the most and is there a site that I can go to actually hear the phrases instead of just trying to decipher what the words sound like from a poor english translation.

I lived for five years in Thailand and only learned the following phrases.

Tao rai = how much

Pang mak = too expensive

Mai pen rai khop = never mind, doesn't matter, etc.

Ali Ga-dai khop = up to you, whatever, etc.

And turn on your freaking meter khop or the ride is free.

I also learned yet khun, but I wouldn't recommending using it.

I dont know of any real good sites thats free that have decent teaching thai with sound, most have some charge to them. The free ones have real basic and limited sound bits but not enough to be truly helpful in LOS.

If you mean "Mai Chawp" (pronounced almost like chop with a knife) then that is:
'general negative' 'like' = no like = I don't like it

I would suggest more appropriate for vendors along Sukhumvit is:
"Mai ao" (pronounced kind've like 'ow, I hurt myself') which translates to:
'general negative' 'want' = no want = I don't want it

Of course, it is normal to use the polite form, so you along Suk you would say:

I would suggest more appropriate for vendors along Sukhumvit is:
"Mai ao" (pronounced kind've like 'ow, I hurt myself') which translates to:
'general negative' 'want' = no want = I don't want it

Of course, it is normal to use the polite form, so you along Suk you would say:

Mai chawp katoey krap
or
Mai ao krap.

Tao rai = how much
Pang mak = too expensive
Mai pen rai khop = never mind, doesn't matter, etc.
Ali Ga-dai khop = up to you, whatever, etc.
And turn on your freaking meter khop or the ride is free.
I also learned yet khun, but I wouldn't recommending using it.

For other services, you might have to change shop. Yet it may be worth while: searching the forum will confirm that TGs like neat and groomed chaps, so the extra effort might yield better treatment.

I have yet to find a place that offers grooming that does not leave you look like riff-raff *and* offers other more ... services.

I know you need to be extra careful with freelancers since you can't go back to the bar they work at to complain if you have a problem. But why are most freelancers freelancers? Are they typcially less attractive, do the bars refuse to hire them because they have issues (drugs, alcohol, emotional). Maybe I am just lucky.

On the other hand I don't take obvious risks with girls I don't know. Simply I don't leave wallet lying around. Its in my pocket when go to the bathroom and I always leave the bathroom door open. Nothing valuable is left on display.

I've found that freelancers are girls who do not want to be tied down to a routine such as an MP or a bar. They tend to be part-timers. I've had good luck with them. Like Mick Licker I have never had anything taken while in Thailand. I do always lock everything of value up though if there is going to be a working girl in the room.

As for hotel staff, at the better hotels I have never had any problems. I know at the Hyatt they will even return money you leave in your laundry. Of course it is always better to not provide temptation, but in many, many stays in different hotels in Thailand, I have often accidentally left money, cameras, laptops, and other goodies out with never a problem. But then I tend to stick to the better hotels.

You are pretty sorted.. I'm too lazy to look up where Majestic Suites is but I am pretty sure it isn't too far from Nana, in which case, inside the Landmark Hotel (139 Suk I think) there is a 'Fitness First' - attached to, but a seperate entity to Landmark.

They are absolutely top notch.

There is another big nice gym opposite the World Trade Centre - can't remember the brand. Failing that, there's another Fitness First up on Sukhumvit Soi 39(?).

Google 'fitness first thailand' for the exact addresses of the ff chain, they are all top notch.

However, I started out with the intention of writing a basic, logical, informative post. It just didn't turn out that way. This problem happens with almost all my endeavors and I think the root cause isn’t fixable. I am one of those weird people that use both the left and right side of my brain in almost identical proportions. I'd venture to say that my brain practically incapable of the artful use of logic, nor it is capable of producing logical art. My decision making process must resemble a group 50 artists and 50 scientists attempting to come to a mutual explanation for the meaning of life.

If you study the post for about thirty seconds or so you should be able to find the spot where the post became a separate entity that was probably controlling me more than I was controlling it. In my judgement, this was the last line I was in control of: “That said, an old-timer (myself included) will tell you that Angel Disco is more of the very same standard fare that is on your short list already, but there is at least one major difference.”

While you aren't guaranteed to get laid as these places, they do have loads of girls you wouldn't ever meet at P4P venues. Tawan Daeng is always full of Isaan girls particularly on weekends. If you're Thai is passable (better even, if you can speak Isaan) you certainly can approach the girls. I've always had lots of fun and pretty good luck at these places.

Are you staying at the Majestic Suites? If so, you can use the fitness center at Majestic Grande for free (just get a authorization slip from the front desk at MS). It's not a bad fitness center - I used it a lot last summer.

So I gathered, Phantom. I'm curious about it as it is well situated for both Soi Cowboy, the Soi 4 and Soi 6 areas off of Ratchadaphisek, the parlors along same, and it appears to be very convenient to both the subway and a Saen Saep water taxi stop..

It's also a little ways away from the madness of Suk, which can be just too much for me sometimes, yet it's close enough to not be a hassle to get over that way.

As it is also apparently well supplied with its own abundant FL action, I can't understand why it isn't used.

It's web site has very little info. I guess I'll just have to go and check it out next time I get to LOS.

I arrived in BKK at 23:40 one day early. I planned to stay at the NaNa as usual. The guy who I had sat next to on the plane said he was staying at the Marriott and already had the limo service waiting so he offered me a ride with him. So I went down Sukhumvit toward NaNa station to look for some t-shirts to buy. The only vendors who were out at that time of night were the ones selling womens clothing. Believe me, plenty of visitors and ex-pats know about the [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908) operation at the Rajah and other venues on Soi 3. We just don't want to support it in any way, shape or form.

The women are all run by one East European mob or the other. The Chenchens are the worst. If the women show any sign of independence (like talking to a farang), those guys start cutting the fingers off their children or relatives back home.

The farang hookers in the Rajah and on Soi 3 are the most heavily pimped in LOS. Isaan farm girls who end up in the P4P scene don't have a very good set of options in life, but they have infinitely more freedom, choice and dignity that the wretched creatures in the Rajah.

It's going to be difficult finding a spot. The NFL is not a big deal outside of the U.S. and possibly Germany. The rest of the world could care less about the game. Soccer/Football is the big draw around the globe. Don't get me wrong, I'm from the U.S., so I will be watching the game. Just putting it in perspective.

The 2nd problem is the time of the game. It's on at 6:30pm U.S. Eastern time, which would put it on around 6:30am or 7:30am in Bangkok. None of the bars may be open at that time, so no screens to watch it.

Traveling around the world is great, and one of the interesting eye openers is how little you hear about the U.S. outside of Bush bashing and how little you see any U.S. sports on TV anywhere in Asia and Europe. It's improved over the years, but you will be hard pressed to find the game.

Okay. If you read Day 1 this is a continuation. It is now 3:30 am. I walk downstairs with May (girl from Day 1) to see the leftovers in the lot. I have been in Asia for the last 5 weeks, and have had more than my share of fun. Really the only problem was the language barrier. I can only say about 5 things in Thai and none of them deal with mongering. I'm sure that she would have done just about anything that I had asked if I had only known how to ask! I'll be better prepared next time.

There are some simple Thai expressions that are useful, however you need a coach who understands Thai pronunciation. Otherwise the Thais just might not understand.
Better to speak simple english words spoken slowly and precisely.
e.g. "Kiss pussy O.K.?" she will probably understand.
The Thai would be "joop jim noi dai mai" (literal meaning: kiss pussy(polite) a-little-bit permit(me) question" but correct pronuncian requires tones in order: rising, low, rising, low, falling, high. So its a little difficult for the inexperienced to do perfectly other than by copying someone else.

When Thais pronounce English badly I don't understand too well also.
