Best to avoid the subject if at all possible - i brought this topic up on the board last year and got into trouble. However i have to admit this is something which does concern me a great deal - makes the selection process all that more challenging (and concerning).

Totally agree with you. Visit Patpong, Nana, Soi Cowboy, Soi 33, etc., and you'll not see a thing out of the oridnary.
As a more-or-less typical tourist, you would have no occassion to get near any of these demonstrations, except perhaps the ones in Lumpini Park - and even then, you'd have to go out of your way to get close.
However, if you're going to over-pay, over-tip or otherwise muck things up, please do so at Thaniya (and tell everyone you're Japanese).

I have booked an airasia flight to phuklet from Bangkok departing at 1555 , prior to that I am reaching there from Hong kong at 1400 on the same day, leaving me with only 1 hour 55 minutes for everything, my query is-
1) will the air asia , flight for phuket leave from the same terminal as the one where i arrive from Hong kong? if no, then what is the fastest way to reach the other terminal? i have heard they have free shuttle service.
2) is one hour fifty five minutes enough for immigrtaion, customs, going for one terminal to another and reaching the air asia counter at least one hr before take off?

I’m used to the Jakarta scene and am not used to the aggressive approach of the male and female touts outside the clubs and bars. Decided to have a look first in the street. BTW it was the street with the market, with all the fake watches, pens, bags etc.

boy toy - you get in term 1 - domestic is a bit farther down the road - there is a shuttle bus between internat and domestic. dpeending on where you sit - you might make it - if you can get off fast and (with immigration paper previously filled out ) make it to immigration, then claim bags and thru customs - out to the kerb and catch the shuttle. they announce domestic - it's about 300m or so down the road so walkable but you are short on time. maybe close,
mentang - it's better in soi cowboy(off soi 20 sukhumvit) patpong always impressed me as a newbie trap (not to say that you won't get taken in cowboy - but it's bit more difficult ) rember - bohica bend over here it comes again

The inter-terminal buses can be unreliable. There is a covered walkway linking International to Domestic on the first (second in US terminology) floor. It's no more than a ten minute walk. If your flight/baggage is not delayed you should be fine. The Air Asia desks are at the far end of the main row. Their flights are usually delayed, anyway.

It is widely known that Patpong is a ripoff and a major tourist trap. The golden age of Patpong (1960s?) is long past and hardly anyone (other than first time tourists) go there. Moreover, it is even better known that the upstairs bars (ones with the shows) are an even bigger ripoff. They pad your bill (and get raided often). Which is why one needs to do their homework (i.e., RTFF) before heading to a new place.

The local Thais have lots of venues depend on their economy. There are lots of lower class karaokes and massages all over town cater to Thais. Especially such as in Saphan Kwai, Pingkao areas ect, with lots of cheap karaoke pick ups and cheap massage shops. Then the middle upper class Thais can go to any massage parlours, karaokes in town ect. Then the high end Thais go to gentleman lounges or high class massage parlours or karaokes.
The budget is like this, for Thais low end plays about 500-1500 bahts. Medium end 1500-3000. High end 2500-10000 or even higher. There are also brothel houses in mostly outskirt of towns that offer girls from 300-500 bahts per 30 min.

I tried some "local" places before, but actually found that (for me) it is not of any additional value, of course besides the little additional adventure feeling you get.
I found that the girls in local places are not better, cheaper, nicer, etc, but rather that the places are a bit more run down compared to Nana or Soi Cowboy.
After all, I personally think that I would like to find exactly the information which was asked for in such a board, I wanted to try the lcoal places as well.

They will sell you all you can carry. You are outside of the customs area when you get to the duty free store.

First thing the BG goes far in your hotel room is the TV remote. Most if any don't have cable where they live and they will surf your room TV with the remote and at times go through adding a few pay for view movies to your bill.
My son gave me a fake TV remote which I brought with me on my February trip. I put the actual remote in a draw and left this one by the TV. On this remote when you push the on button the operator receives a slight electric shock. Nothing that would injure or really hurt but it is such a supprise they drop the remote and leave it alone for the remainder of their visit.

The duty free store is in the baggage area, before you leave the customs. They are located right of the customs exit gate. I believe there is another one at the other end of the hall.
They will sell you all you can carry. You are outside of the customs area when you get to the duty free store. It is cheaper in the duty free store.
Hey there Capt JB, sorry to pull you on this but your answer is not quite correct.
The Duty Free section for International Arrivals is actually in the same hall as the luggage collection area, after this you then pass customs, you cannot buy Duty Free after passing customs.
Also, i've found the spirits to be maybe a dollar or 2 cheaper than local supermarkets, percentage wise thats about 5-8% so theres not much in it. The main benefit is if you smoke, theres only a couple of dollars in it again but percentage wise your saving about 18%.
There are of course limits, ask the stewardess on your flight for the info, she will have it all written down.
EDIT: It's too early in the morning and it took me another read of JB's post to see he was taking the p*ss. Geez i need more sleep, sorry JB.

If you are really unlucky you will be sent to the customs headquater nearby the terminal and spend a shitty day there. Although it's always good to show common sense wherever you go, I think anyone coming to Bangkok with Western concepts of big city crime needs to get rid of those notions quickly. Of my years in Thailand, 5 have been spent living in this city. It is one of the safest places I've ever lived. While I've been mugged in Toronto, in broad daylight on a subway train, London, in Green Park near Buckingham Palace, and had a gun stuck to my temple in Kashmir, I've never been afraid to walk anywhere at anytime, day or night in Bangkok. I lived for 2 1/2 years at Lam Salee, the centre of the sourthern Thai enclave. You can't get any more aggressive in this country, than southern Thai men. But, other than a few smart-ass insults hurled my way by some southern Thai wankers, I've never been challenged or threatened. Although, I'm sure walking around the docks in Sathu Pradit at night isn't probably the best idea, Thais generally don't go looking for a fight. If they do, it's usually with each other. The only time I have ever seen problems it was caused by Farang themselves; usually drunk and looking for a fight. They almost always get the shit kicked out of them by a group of pissed off Thai guys and they more often than not are English or Australian Lager Louts (with appologies to the English and Australians who aren't Lager Louts).

As you could imagine paying 500baht for an ugly slag who only growls at you and who does nothing but lies back and thinks of Thailand may not be as good a deal as some honey who looks like she enjoying herself and knows how to make the right moves for 5000 baht. So a lot of disagreements have at their basis different standards of “performance”.
However there is one standard we can use to measure “fair price” and that is the typical clubs the local Thai's go to. These range from high-class (Like Paragon and Cleopatra) to middle class (like Tables and the Piano Bar). The reason why we can get a fair idea of the correct rice/performance from these establishments is they are all based on repeat business. Typically you need to become a member, which normally costs about 30000-20000 baht a year. This gets you free access to the club, perhaps some drinks and free or a low cost access to girls for take-away and a range of addition services in the club, such as KTV rooms, hot tubs at a reasonable price. Because its all about repeat business, the pricing structure remains reasonably fixed and highly competitive.
So what does it cost – this is a grand simplification but the cost is based on the category of girls. Most places have 3 basic categories, Model, Special and Regular. The Model and Regular classifications are simple enough to comprehend, the Special varies a bit. These girls may be very young, may actually be thai's (in case you have not noticed, there are very few Thai providers, they all tend to be from issam, down south, up chang-mae way) or may provide some special service. I never select the “specials” so can't go beyond this basic description – i mainly select the model categories. Within the Model category (and i assume the other 2 as well) you get a further sub-division of class A, B and C. The girls get rated on a regular basis by the owner, based on face, body, attitude, health, and customer feedback. At the high class places the LT price ranges are typically 6000baht class A, 5500baht class B and 5000baht class C. In the middle class places it ranges from 3000-4000 baht. LT means until 6am and these places normally open about 9pm – so you can get a reasonably amount of time with them.
At the places i go to the girls are all under 25 (some minimal exceptions), get regular health check up's and are not allowed to go with customers at either end of their periods – to prevent the customers old fellows getting covered with blood when they extract – not a pleasant experience sometimes. They get some basic training, mainly around attitude and the owners often will ask their member's to comment on the girls performance. I assume this has some effect on their classifications?
So – you now know the price at the high end. As for most of the places in soi-cowboy, you should never pay the girls these type of prices – and typically the girls never expect it (although they will always try). In my experience the bars with the best looking girls tends to be a place in patpong i go to (You will get about 3-4 model types), a few places in nana (normally 1-2 low-class model types, although lately the quality has been terrible) and perhaps Shark in soi (normally 1-2 low-class model types, although even here the quality has been a bit poor lately) None of these girls are as good as the clubs i mentioned above – but they are close. Perhaps 3000baht for LT is ok for the real nice girls with good attitude* – but for the 99% of the rest the prices quoted in the recent posts are reasonable – although i must admit girls for under 1000baht tend to be less that attractive in my experience.
Of course if you speak Thai the price/performance equation does change outside the clubs. You have a good range of very low cost girls available – so go for it.
* = There is a nice half Issam half falang girl in patpong which is good looking (face and skin is western, body Thai) which has a great attitude and good skills – i have no idea why she is working in a girlie bar in patong, but she always gets my attention.

My ex-gf used to work on reception at the Dynasty Inn and now works at the new Dynasty on soi 6. Before getting this job, she had no experience of BKK and less of Farang tourists. She told me that the worst guests were always the Brits and asked me why they are always drunk and rude (and as an aside, always had the ugliest BGs with them). I told her that only a certain class of Brit seems to come to Thailand on holiday, usually working-class, and named Nigel from Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, the outskirts of London (Greys, Luton, Wembley etc.) or some other English shit-hole. They, more than any other seem to transplant their culture of ignorance, rowdiness, drunkeness and violence wherever they go. I've witnessed their bad behaviour in various countries around the world and heard locals wherever I've gone cursing them and wishing them to leave. In recent years this type have become a blight on Thailand and have made it bad for all other Farang because Thais like to lump us all into the same category as they are generally not aware of the differences between Farang. So, we are all tarred and feathered with the same brush when assholes like these drunken sods cause problems.
I've read on this forum guys saying that, it's their holiday and they'll do what they like. This is just plain ignorance. I made the mistake once of using a phrase something like " we're ambassadors of western culture". That's certainly a bit high-handed. But, we are definitely guests here and should act accordingly.
I love watching the British scumbags taking a beating, serves the assholes right. Thailand really does attract the worst of Britain, most ex-cons fly straight here a few days after their release. There are a few nice Brits too, but only those from zone 1 London.
I think the solution would be to refuse entry to anyone arriving at Don Muang who is wearing jewelry, has tattoos, white socks, drops their Ts, etc. Or simply increase the cost of LHR-BKK to several thousand pounds.

Being a Brit myself i am afraid the behavour you see in Bangkok is exactly the same behavour as you would see back in the UK, after midnight, around the working class pubs. The culture of Fuck or Fight is ingrained into many parts of British work class culture, possibly a result of the ingrain class system which still exists in the mother country - unfortunatly - and i have seen it several times in bangkok, much to my disgust.
On the other hand i must admit many other countries export their bad habits also, austrailians drink far too much (although they tend to be happy drunks), germans never tip the girls (and my father is german so i can relate this this), the french expect the girls to give them money for their company - and the list goes on.

I'm ex-military (Canadian) and served with the UN peace-keeping forces many years ago. I don't know if I'd go as far as saying the US military are incompetent. I think the regular foot soldier is as good as any in the world, when properly trained. But, unfortunately the US military today is stretched thin and largely made-up of weekend warriors who lack the necessary training or discipline to do the job required. The major problem with the US military has always been its poor leadership and faulty intelligence. Vietnam is a good example. There were very few good senior officers serving either at HQ or in the field and US intelligence never properly understood who they were fighting. Unfortunately, the same is true in Iraq. They have once again underestimated the situation and the 'enemy'.
However your comment about the killing of their allies reminds me of a story my father told about WWII. He was in the RCAF and the American airforce strafed his airfield killing his best friend and scores of other 'friendlies' because their recon units mistook the blue uniforms of the Canadian airforce for Luftwaffe uniforms despite the fact that the uniforms didn't look anything like Luftwaffe and the planes on the ground were obviously not German.
I do concede however, that man for man, the British remain probably the best military in the world, and the US would be more fucked than they already are if they didn't have then as allies in Iraq.

Totally agree - lady luck plays her part. However if you spend enough time in BKK, which i assume you do, you can narrow down luck by establishing a business relationship with a select number of high-quality service providers. I normally go with my regular's, but always try at least 1 newby each month. Most of them i never come back to - such is luck, but sometimes you find a real gem.

I agree with you about civilian leadership then and now. But, I also don't think Westmoreland was a very good commander. He falsified casualty reports, was a lousy tactician, who caused untold numbers of unnecessary deaths and he totally underestimated the North Vietnamese from day 1.
But, maybe there's a military thread somewhere and we can continue this argument there.
Farang expats blending in (sort of) in all-Thai Neighborhoods and the possibilities
I have been spending a lot of time around Latprao and Bangkapi as my new gf-to-be lives in that area. It used to be that you would rarely, if ever see Farang in totally Thai neighborhoods like this. So, if you did, they would stick out like a sore thumb and would be subject to blatant staring and curiousity by the locals. But, I've spotted more and more Farang and Farang-Thai couples at Central Latprao, Carrefour Latprao and the Mall Bangkapi and I'd say that I stare at them far more than the Thais who seem oblivious to them all now. It's a very interesting area because it is a very eclectic mix of all types of Thais from southern Muslims to Bangkok HiSo Thai-Chinese, to Middle and working class Thais and transported Isaan farmers doing all manner of work, not to mention, Isaan girls working in shops, factories in the area as well as the entertainment venues. Of course nearby is the Thai go-go and entertainment area of Suthisan and there are plenty of massage parlors and karaoke places all around the area going out as far as Ramkhamhaeng, Sukhabi Ban 1-3, Srinakarin and Pattanakarn. Ramkhamhaeng Rd. has ABAC and Ramkhamhaeng University both of which are large and include international programs, now. So there are quite a few pool bars, pubs and discos on it sub-sois (soi Mahathai - Ram. 65, for example) because of all the students in the area. With the international programs, there are also quite a few Farang international students around making the area lot more Farang-friendly than it used to be. I used to live around there 9 years ago and now have been revisiting the place and have found lots more going on now. I haven't any specific places to recommend at this point, largely because I've been with the gf-in-waiting most of the time I've been around there. But, if you're adventurous, speak some Thai have a bit of time and patience and want to do a bit of exploring, I think it could be a very interesting area for mongering. Unlike Siam, MBK, or Emporium for example where picking up mostly well-heeled girls is largely an imposibility for most Farang, places like the Mall Bangkapi or Seacon Square offer more possibilities for the brave-hearted because of the more accessible lower middle-class and working-class girls who might be more receptive to having a Farang BF.

Have not met a german in LOS yet as my stay there was only 2 weeks, so can not comment on germans in Thailand.
But have been to Germany for a 1 week vacation in past and most older Germans I met were friendly and helpful, but the younger germans mainly kept to themselves and sometimes very rude when you approach them with questions. They (younger generation )dont seem to like outsiders that dont speak german. IMHO

There is a major deadlock between TRT and their opponents and the election next month may not even happen due to boycott threats and election fraud accusations.
T's protestors and opponents are refusing to back down just as he is.
Fuck knows what'll happen, but I kind of suspect TRT will prevail, which I guess is a shame. Although his haters seem to be fast growing in numbers, and this is definitely his largest political hurdle to date.
Oh, and the protests have so far been peaceful. I strolled past a few days ago and there was a happy friendly vibe (but I was high so everything everywhere was good and mellow). I like that part of town, Thammasart and the markets by the river. I suspect actually that Taksin will eventually go. The forces against him are significant and made up of the most influential, educated and important people in the country. Their numbers grow by the day. Most labor unions are against him. i have spent a little time checking out soi cowboy and would like to give you my review.
soi cowboy is s small area, at least compared to patpong. but as opposed to patpong soi cowboy is more about action than the tourist shows at patpong. i visited many of the clubs in soi cowboy and the drink prices are about the same everywhere. i did the heineken test and ordered a bottle of heineken in every club i went in; they range between 110 baht at dollhouse to 120 most everywhere else. there were a couple exceptions that charged 130 baht. the price isn’t bad considering that at the hotel i stayed at a heineken runs 220 +10% service +7% vat.
i arrived at soi cowboy at around 10:30 pm and walked around before going into any places. the soi itself is somewhat of a carnival. there are handlers with their elephants wandering around trying to sell you food to feed the elephant (20 baht for a small bag). there are lots of young children running around the area selling flowers there are girls out in front of most of the clubs trying to get you to come in, but not really hassling anyone. there are food sellers with a large variety of items for sale. and finally there are open air bars in front of some of the clubs.
most of the clubs are laid out the same. there is one, in some cases two, stages with barstools around it and then a little back there are padded bench seats. around the walls are more padded seats or in some cases couches. there will be girls on stage and more circulating around chatting with customers. you will probably have a girl come introduce herself to you and want to sit down. if you don’t fancy her tell her so and she will move on. don’t worry about insulting her, just be polite and tell her you are not interested and she won’t give you a problem. on the other hand it might be nice to talk to someone and you are not making a commitment for anything by letting her sit and talk to you. if you talk for a while you should buy her a drink, she will get part of the drink cost.
i decided to check out the dollhouse first so i wandered in and found a seat. immediately a person was there asking what i wanted to drink. she was back in a minute with my heineken and the bill (110 baht) which she left in a cup. there were about 10 girls dancing on the stage. most of them were wearing very sheer while bikini tops and little baby doll skirts that were barely see through and were pulled down to show the crack of their ass. many of the girls had their tops off, though only one had their bottoms off, occasionally a girls would lift their skirt up to show her pussy to everyone. i happened to glance up and there were two dancers on the second floor which could be seen if you were sitting in the right place, i was. she noticed my looking and started a stretching routine that gave me a look at everything nature gave her.

Generally, we seem to agree on most things.
But, with all due respect to your GF, hanging around a university campus, unless you are young, can speak excellent Thai and look like Heath Ledger or Leonardo DiCaprio isn't going to get you very far. The idea of a coffee shop near the Chula bookstore is just laughable. Chula girls, who are probably the ones frequenting these places are for the most part, HiSo, extremely rich and conservative. I discussed the topic of Farang hanging around or near uni campuses with a colleague and he told me of an incident tha happened last year when I was out of the country.

I discussed the topic of Farang hanging around or near uni campuses with a colleague and he told me of an incident tha happened last year when I was out of the country.

I think your assessment is pretty much way off the mark.
Two of my best fucks ever were Thammasat girls. Both BTW were business students and HiSo Thai-Chinese, as well. They would do anything and I mean anything! Sure, the world is not black and white, and exceptions prove the rule. My personal experience and believe after studying and working in Asia for years is that a woman's sexual "openness" depends to a large degree on her upbringing and social environment, and not much on the fact from which country she is from.

4 days in BKK just like almost every year. Here is my 0.02 Euro of info and wisdom on gogo bars (more in the MP section).

Most of the exchange places on Suk are fine. I usually bring $100 bills to change with a later series number 2000 or later. Some of the changers have problems with 1996 and before.

Most of the exchange places on Suk are fine. I usually bring $100 bills to change with a later series number 2000 or later. Some of the changers have problems with 1996 and before.
Like Elvis says bring either the new $100s or plenty of $20s. There were too many counterfit $100s in circulation which is why the money exchangers won't accept them.

No. 20$ has bad exchange rate. so 100$ note is the best bet.
Bring 100$ notes which recently printed out. then you will find no probelm

SUPERRICH always has the best rates of exchange by far. You'll see a lot of cash changing hands in there too. For small Baht purchases it's not worth the journey but with bigger amounts it makes a difference.
