To foil the internet cafes (like Kinkos) and a few countries (like China and Thailand) who attempt to block access to the Forum, I have written a page detailing the use of Proxy Servers, which you should review before posting here.

I have used an anonymous proxy server at work to access my commercial web mail accounts because my employer elected to block them. I used a commercial service called proxify.com and it was very convenient and easy to do. Just type in the address, "https://www.proxify.com" into the address window in Internet Explorer (or any web browser). The proxy service acts as a relay, or buffer, to the Internet, hiding your IP address and activity from anyone trying to monitor your activity. Just be sure to type "https" (NOT "http" - don't forget the "s") to keep things secure and anonymous.
For example, after starting proxify com securely, if you want to visit internationalsexguide.info, type in http://www.internationalsexguide.info into the proxify.com window within your browser's window. Your browser should always stay in SECURE mode, which you can verify with the "locked padlock" symbol at the bottom of your browser's window. If your browser leaves secure mode, you run the risk of being logged visiting a restricted website, so don't forget and type the web address into the wrong window. All information between your computer and the proxy server is encrypted so no one else can intercept and read the information, as long as your browser stays in secure mode. When the data reaches your computer it is unencrypted so you can read it.
Anonymous proxy services often require an annual fee. My experiences with the anonymous proxy subscription services have been very good. The cost is reasonable and it doesn't require installation of any new software (which might not be possible on a network computer, unless you have administrator privileges).
One problem that still might occur is if someone (such as a network administrator) has installed a keystroke logging program or some type of spyware on your computer so they can actually read your computer's keyboard activity or your computer's desktop. A network administrator can also harvest cookies placed on any network computer and read browser history caches, which might raise some red flags.
if you're accessing blocked sites over an employer's network, with his equipment and software, it would probably be best to have your own independent browser software running on a USB drive to minimize leaving a trail that the administrator might find. I've seen thumb drives for sale that have browser software already loaded. I think proxify.com had such a drive for sale but it probably wouldn't be difficult to set one up on a blank thumb drive. Big USB hard drives are fairly cheap but a large drive would attract more attention in the office than a thumb drive would.
In any case, it's always good housekeeping to erase your browser's history cache and any cookies when you're finished, if you're concerned about privacy.
It is possible to create your own anonymous internet proxy server by setting up a computer with the proper software. I would like to try this and if someone has knowledge or experience I'd be interested.
In Dubai, I use jap.exe It's a free service and works well, but occasionally is "down" for maintenance, and sometimes slow if too many users.
I recently started using another proxy list, but often it allows me to read only (not make posts), depending on the one I use from the lists. The available proxy services on these lists vary from day to day (some die off completely, some work only temporarily).
The problem with announcing available proxy site addresses is that they will soon become blocked.
Proxy / anonymizer services are banned in the UAE (once they are detected by the ISP here), so users need to download them from outside the UAE or from selected "free-zone" areas in the UAE first.

if an internet cafe ban isg, it's silly not to ban these services as well. at least uae will do better than a small cafe owner.
on the other hand, vpn isn't banned in china. i don't see much difference between a private company network and these cgi proxies installed in your friend's computers.
however, a new 'proxy' has a life of 30 minutes before it's detected and banned in china. i'm not sure what 'proxy' it means.
for the free services, the contents are not usually encrypted, which isn't important in an internet cafe. but most free service don't allow you to post anything. you have to pay for that.
there are better experimental free services with grand aims. but you have to download software, or setup proxy etc. i don't think downloading is a problem with high speed connections in cafes, especially if you don't need to setup an account using credit card, and pay for the anonymous service. like a firefox extension can be downloaded and installed by about one click.
one may not be able to install software in an internet cafe, but some software are 'green', that you can 'run' without install.
jap looks like the us tor system. now they work with each other too. jap may work as not many people knows about it; few traffic, no harm done yet. but tor has lots of problems.
tor used to be sponsored by the electronic frontier foundation, but not anymore. many webmasters and services ban the tor middle servers beccause of its success. a traceable ip is the main deterent to prevent all sorts of attacks. tor erased that. banning the jap system is trivial by comparison.
surprisingly, tor isn't banned in china. but my experience is that it's slow, especially after the eff withdrawal support.
paid cgi proxy services not only hide your ip, but also usually encrypt the content, so nobody knows what you are reading. tor and jap offers better protection, free, but slower. paid proxy services is a single point service and hence easier to ban.
the more basic strategy is to use the numerous public proxies in the world, many are left open to the public by webmasters by mistake. a large list is maintained at http://www.samair.ru/proxy/ i don't know if this basic method works in uae. because if say the isp monitor the content of your browser traffic, they know what you are reading. but this consumes a lot more recourses than monitoring which website you are visiting. but i think if you just want to access isg, that will work. but don't try it if you know someone is monitoring you personally.
but as i mentioned above, a new 'proxy' has a life of 30 min in china.
also i think you can use a two tier approach - use one of the numerous proxies to get to the outside world, and then via one of the fewer paid services to encrypt content. if this cannot be done now, it's easy to get it done. if proxies doesn't work and 'web-based' services doesn't work, there's nothing you can do about it.
the problem with a single proxy is that it's highly unreliable. the list owners scan the ip of the whole world to find the proxies. so the list is very not update even though it's updated everyday. the system administrator may discover the mistake when the traffic through it increases, and hence close the proxy. when the people in the country of the proxy server wake up, the server can be slowed down a lot. some proxy limits the bandwidth of each user. one minute the proxy is as fast as a direct connection, but a few minutes later, the proxy may grind to a halt. some proxy forward your ip to your destination server. some proxy tell your destination server that it's a proxy. some proxy keep everything secret (but not perfect).
to be usable, some software is needed to import the published list of proxies at the click of a button. scan each proxy for response time, and the information it leaks to the destination server, and whether the proxy support posting which is relatively few. this testing of proxy should be continuously done to select the fastest one to use. and rotate the proxies to avoid detection. and in internet cafe, the start up time should be short, allowing surfing as soon as a decent proxy is found.
since a single proxy is used, this method is faster than any of the other more complicated methods. also several proxies can be used simutanously to speed things up.
usually the sites listing public proxies also sell these softwares to use them. but without free trial i won't buy them.
one free software is multiproxy that is reasonably good, meeting a few of the above requirements but not all. however, it's sort of a spyware itself. now they don't spend money on a fast server so the spying becomes obvious.
i got my hands on some internal software that is pretty good. but is there a mass market for that? how many copy can be sold for say $20 each? if there's over one thousand potential users, there's no problem of bringing that sort of software to market in a short time - i tried it.
being uae, i think it should be at least $40 a piece. what's the population? what else do they ban? porn sites? wow, that's $50. but do they still chop off something if you get caught accessing banned sites?
the only method that cannot be banned is p2p, which creates a huge numbers of dynamic exit points if the number of users are huge. tor has some p2p characteristics. i2p is another, but slower. in china, free ultrasurf works http://www.ultrareach.com/company/download.htm speed is not bad. the strange thing is that it appears as a standard proxy. you may be able to circumven censorship, but your real ip is revealed to the destination server!

But what Jackson is after is server side control so that anyone can get to the forum even in countries where it is restricted.
I believe in a country like Dubai (or China, etc.) which wants to restrict a website, it is difficult to give people access from the server side.
This is because those countries which restricts sites will normally have control over the ISP routing and also the DNS servers.
So it is relatively straightforward for them to block access to those IP addresses and domain names which they don't like.
They simply filter it at the ISP side. There isn't must you can do about it because the traffic must pass through the ISP DNS resolve and also routing system.
Anonymizers only make it invisible as to what site you are going to. But it does defeat an ISP blocking access to a site because the DNS simply won't resolve to the site and instead will be redirected to some "site blocked" page.
A web based proxy is simply another website which will act as a name proxy for the forum and will make requests to the forum on behalf of a user. Since the web-based proxy does not live inside the ISP network, it will not be recognized as accessing the forum site by the ISP.
So forum members will need to know the web or IP address of the proxy to access in order to get to the forum.
Of course this becomes a cat and mouse game because the authorities will eventually discover this IP address and block it and you will have to create a new one.
Essentially, some of these anonymizers operate there own web-based proxies so they do the job which Jackson is looking for. But it is up to the individual member to know to access the forum when he is in one of the countries where access to the forum site is restricted.

for logging in and posting problems in big brother countries, we are talking about circumvention, or breaking out. software for circumvention often come with content encryption, so nobody knows where you visited and what you saw, which is sometimes life and death matters. these software may also clean up some of the trace you left on the computer, so public computers can be used. all these aims are very different from remaining anonymous to the site you are visiting. some circumvention delibrately forward your ip to the destination site. otherwise, the circumvention system becomes ideal platform for all sort of attacks.
the simple way for circumvention is to use proxies. but proxies are unreliable as discussed previously. you need a large list of them. also, a new proxy has an average life of 30 min in china, i heard. the irony is, if you can read the proxy list posted here, then you don't need proxy. and if the proxies are on some list on the internet, most likely they are already blocked by some smart big brothers.
cgi proxies are more convenient as you don't need to change the setting of the browser, nor download software. however, the funtionality is limited because the software have to modify a lot of things in the webpage you are surfing. there may be log in and posting problems when today's websites are sophisicated and security concerned. some proxies delibrately limit the ability to post, as that's the liscense to mount attacks.
the best circumvention software seem to be ultrasurf http://www.ultrareach.com/company/download.htm that is developed for circumvention in china (of course you can use it anywhere). it's seems to be quite fast, and don't have a single point of failure - a proxy. the software file is smaller than the list of proxy you are carrying around! you can carry it in a floppy, a keychain usb drive, or hide it in any websites that you can upload a file.
the software don't need to be installed. double click the file and ie is opened for you without any settings. but use it to surf trusted sites only, your ip is not hidden. but all content are encrypted from big brother. as with non open source software, you trust it at your own risk. but if lots of chinese are actually using it, that can't be bad.
it's free, no ads, and i can log in and post. actually i can't log in for long and hence i can't post. and now i can't logout. i guess isg is too much protected from mass download of pictures and hot links. that's something to do with server settings.
tor and jap are like having a lot of proxies working together forming large systems. but they are still fairly slow.
your best bet, if you are traveling, is having a home computer with cable or dsl which is outside of cencorship region. you can install proxy software, cgi proxy, or secure tunnels on it. so you can do whatever you like with little speed difference. the slower speed is only noticable when you download large files.

In Kuwait. Having similar problems with ISP blocking the site. (what Piper1 is experiencing in Dubai)
Basically, if you can manage to encrypt your communication beyond the ISP via Proxy or Firewalled VPN, then they cannot block what they cannot see.
FWIW:
www.findnot.com offers a paid service for about $90 per year. www.anonymouse.org is a free service, but a little inconvenient as it does not save passwords or cookies and to view pictures, one must log in each time.

The program is attached. Need to unzip, the most often recommended program is 7zip.
When started, double clicked on the file, there are 3 options to choose from. For a typical ISP, direction connection should be used. Auto detect will look at the setting on your IE regarding proxy settings and copy that. You can also copy that manually. The IE will be opened, and the browser automatically being set to 127.0.0.1:9666, that is the ultrasurf port 9666 at your own local machine.
The page shown in IE will be in chinese. You can then surf normally by typing in the address bar - it's a proxy based software. When you close ultrasuft, the IE proxy will be reset to the original value.
So if you can use jap and other proxies, I don't think the problem is obvious if you can't use ultrasurf.
If you use other browsers, just set the browser proxy to 127.0.0.1:9666 manually. If you are in a company LAN, the firewall may restrict outgoing addresses and ports, and you may also need to use a proxy to connect to outside, which should be set automatically or manually as above.
You can also try Tor. Tor can be downloaded at:

In conjunction with Tor, you need something to watch the proxy changes like Privoxy which can be downloaded at:
http://www.privoxy.org/
If you use Firefox, there is an extention which makes it simple to switch from using the Proxy to not using it. The extention is called Switchproxy and can be found at mozilla.org.
I think the idea behind Tor is to use multiple proxies to create completely anonymous connections. It also has the added benefit of enabling one to access any website. When in China, I have no problems accessing any site when using Tor.

As long as the comunication between you and the proxy is encrypted your completely in the clear.
This doesn’t mean that anything you do can’t be logged or monitored as the comunication between proxy and website will not be encrypted most of the time. So if you give out any personal data there you can still be traced. The same goes for your email, you have to be very consistent with using a proxy to read your webmail . Don’t give out any data and make sure you never read your mail any other way.

The only way to defeat a good filter on ISP level is to make sure you have encrypted communication between yourself and the service you’re using to browse the web. Simplest solution are either VPN, encrypted proxies or encrypted anonymizers.
The main problem is that its very simple for an ISP to block access to those proxies which in effect renders them useless. But they are the most simplest way to use, as you don’t need to download any additional software.
Other solutions work mostly on basis of some kind of distributed network. Requests you do are encrypted and send from user to user until it reaches its destination. The information is encrypted again and only decrypted when it reaches you. Tor is one example of such an approach. For this you need to download additional software.

Now that www.nntime.com has been blocked am also using it. It is good but last night it was connecting according to the pop up but I got nowhere in trying open any page. Tonight I am in and its OK and fast. Not a techie either so hope it lasts! Need to download stuff overseas onto CD and install here at home methinks.

Will try as is very slow last time and I could not be that patient. The ultrasurf seems OK at certain times of the day only still. I also have a number of proxy/ports that I use as well but think will try your suggestion as I need a more permanent fix (something akin to me and Miss N at the moment, she is becoming a permanent fix - well until the GF arrives!).

Going to have to concur with Moody for a couple reason (not all impartial):
1: It is open source which means unlike the other solutions on here, you know its not spyware or a rootkit. Any of you blindly trusting any executable attached on here is asking for trouble.
2: Considering the current tor network consists of a grid of a couple thousand servers wiyh nodes transparently coming and going all the time, I have yet to see a firewall that has blocked it.
3: IAW with #2, I used tor successfully in the UAE, China, various governmental military networks, and a few financial networks (all which have extremely tight security) and works no problem. The MAIN problem for all your firewalled folk is they block access to the tor site so you can't actually download it to get it working. I highly suggest that you have somebody YOUTRUST download it and email it to you, host it, or next time you travel outside your blocked country, just grab a copy.
4: I will claim partiality here as I contribute both fiscally and my personal spare time to this project. Not a developer but one of the various application porters and bug testers.
5: It is extremely transparent to the user and Mum and Dad could use it and install it just fine.

What you are looking for is the win32 tor + privoxy distro (though if you know what the other distro's are and are suitable, by all means use it).
On FreeBSD you can just do: 'pkg_add -r tor-devel' and you will pull it off the main FreeBSD mirror servers as its in the port collection.
Ultrasurf only works with win32 Internet Explorer ... not sure how much of a issue that is for people reading this board but incase you installed it (going to assume you did so on windows) and its not working with Opera or Firefox, thats why. Use tor .. it supports all browsers, all OS's, AND items like bit torrent, IRC, instant messenging, etc etc .. its a full SOCKS solution unlike Ultrasurf.
And yes I say win32 Internet Explorer as it doesn't work for those folk running Internet Explorer on Apple nor those running win64 XP or Vista Internet Explorer .. its a very very limited application.

Ultrasurf works fine in Saudi.
"torpark" has recently been upgraded and works well (occasionally times out, but an extra click or two usually works). Easy to download and use; fast and pretty reliable. Another advantage is you can load it onto a memory stick, pop the stick into any PC (internet cafe etc), and it works externally.

Q: What is it? A: It is a FREE modified version of the portable Firefox browser integrated with Tor (the onion router) anonymiser network software. According to the Torpark site: "its small, portable, clean, open-source, free of spyware/adware, and free."
Q: What does it do? A: What is does is allow you to surf annonymously (in fascist/dictaorial/conservative countries/places that block or screen internet usage) as well as to get past pesky company firewalls/usage screening software that try to prevent you from accessing fine sites such as ISG, online porn, football scores, etc.
Q: Was it easy to set up? A: Yes and No. For my Home PC, I downloaded the software, unzipped it onto a USB key drive (it takes only 32Mb), fired up the software and 30sec later I was using the tor-enabled Firefox to surf past my Internet provider's impromptu block against ISG. Easy as 1-2-3. For my work PC, it was trickier because I had to modify one of the tor setting files to show which proxy server my company uses. This involved an hour or so of surfing the Torpark online forums to get some idea how to tweak settings (DON'T send me any PMs to help with this geek crap), but as of today I can now surf ISG (any any other illicit site that I want) from my cube. :D I know how many millions of Euros my company has spent globally to put in platinum-class routers, firewall and usage screening software, so I marvelled at the fact that Torpark cut through these obstacles. In addition, I love the fact that, since I installed it to a USB key, that there is never any evidence of illicit surfing software or my nasty surfing history on either my work or home PC. :rolleyes:
Q: Any downsides? Yes, it can be slow, because your traffic has to go thru the tor network - anonymity has its price! Also, there is a known conflict with Zone Alarm firewall (which I use) - not malicious, but annoying.

please be very careful when using free (and to some degree even paid) proxies and vpns. here is why.
please keep this in mind at all times:
everything you send through a proxy and vpn is wide open to the party operating the proxy/vpn. everything, meaning your passwords, userids, credit card numbers, any and all data you send via that link (short of encrypted traffic sent through an encrypted vpn or ssl connection…) is freely available to the party at the other end.
when you use a proxy or vpn, you need to know that you entrust your data to another party at the other side. this party has access to your most private secrets. would you trust a perfect stranger?
why do free proxies exist?
setting up a proxy costs time and money. have you ever contemplated why there are free ones? for several reasons:
1.) per chance. many proxy servers are created by mistake when someone sets up a new system. they are found by robots and included in lists. suddenly, the traffic spikes, the administrator finds out, he fixes his mistake, the proxy is gone. this explains the short shelf life of many proxies.
2.) as a trap set up by criminals. the easiest way to collect private data is to set up a free proxy. people who use it have something to hide. people who set it up have a lot of interesting stuff to gain. many free proxies are set up by hackers. while you use their proxy, they steal your information, get access to your computer, place trojans or rootkits on your computer. from now on, your computer will operate as part of their botnet and do whatever else they want. stolen credit cards, and “rental fees” to botnets easily compensate for the cost of the proxy. when or before the illicit nature of this proxy is discovered, it is shut down. this explains the short shelf life of many proxies.
3.) as a trap set up by law enforcement. because proxies attract people who want to hide something, many proxies are set up by le. refer to #2 for the rest. there is no need to shut down these proxies. this explains why some of the longest living and best performing proxies are operated by governments or law enforcement agencies.
4.) as a service to society by do-gooders. but how do you know that #4 isn’t a #2 or #3? you don’t. these proxies tend to stay around for a while also, until the do-gooders are sick of doing good for free. a notable exception is the tor network. it is a distributed, peer-to-peer network of volunteers. it uses encryption. it’s usually slow like molasses. again, the encryption ends at the exit nodes of the network where it can be sniffed, recorded, analyzed. you never know.
why do free vpns exist?
except for the inadvertent creation (vpns need to be managed and administered,) the same applies to free vpns. they are set up by criminals, law enforcement agencies who want to entrap criminals, and by do-gooders who want to provide a public service. as above: you never know. keep in mind: the vpn traffic is encrypted (some traffic, especially via the pptp protocol is easily breakable,) but it’s only encrypted as far as the vpn-provider’s server. once there, the traffic is decrypted and passed on in the clear. on the provider’s server, the traffic can be viewed, stored, analyzed, traced back to the sender et al.
who do you trust?
it is up to you to decide what the intentions are to provide a free proxy or vpn service. the old “if an offer sounds too good to be true” adage applies. i trust a free proxy or vpn service as much as i trust anyone who offers me any free service: i don’t.
paid proxies or vpns
note that in theory (and some praxis) the same as above applies to paid proxies and paid vpns. just because you pay them doesn’t make your information more secure. the fact that they are a commercial enterprise simply raises your trust level. they invest time and money to get you as a customer, and they will lose all customers if they abuse your data. which doesn’t assure you that they won’t cheat you. a paid proxy or vpn simply raises the likelihood that it is legit. if i’d be really insidious, then i would operate a low cost, high performance, paid vpn service. i would have all my customers’ credit cards, and therefore addresses, identities, ssn#s, credit ratings. i would know what they access all day and would even make some money to cover the cost. can’t help you with that conundrum.
proxy or vpn?
if you pay, use someone you deem as reliable, stay away from the too good to be true offers, and pay for a vpn instead of a proxy. a vpn encrypts all traffic from and to your machine without additional fuss. proxies are headache-inducing, they need a lot of fiddling on your part and often they plainly don’t work. if you pay, pay for a vpn.
other uses of a vpn
if you use a hotspot in an airport or starbucks, if you use an internet connection in a hotel or any other public place, and if you value your data, always use a vpn. if you don’t, the data you send is available to anyone on that network. wifi connections to public hotspots are unencrypted and can be sniffed by anyone who knows how. the easiest way to get high value data is to camp out with a laptop in the first class lounge of an airport (keeps out the riffraff …) if you are using a hotel connection, assume that your data is being logged. wifi in public hotspots and hotel networks can be fertile grounds to harvest high value data.
paranoia dept. 1
when you sign up for any encrypted service, the initial sign-up stage is usually in the clear. userids, passwords, keys etc. often get sent via email. renewal notices and transactions are often sent via email. can be easily intercepted. be careful. you might be buying a complicated security system while giving the key to someone you want to lock out.
paranoia dept. 2
the identity and addresses of vpns and proxies are no secret. the ip numbers of the providers and ports to be used can be and are being blocked. more insidiously, they can be spoofed. you think you are connecting to your vpn provider, but instead you go through someone else’s computer. to set this up takes considerable effort and energy. it is unlikely. but not impossible. “someone else’s” identity is left as an exercise to the reader.
most trusted solution
the person you can trust the most is yourself. the safest vpn is the one you have set up yourself. if you know how to, you can set up a small server back home. preferably via tcp port 443, which makes your traffic look like regular https traffic. if you don’t know what i’m talking about, then you probably can’t set up that system anyway. an (expensive) alternative is to rent a private or virtual private server elsewhere and set up the endpoint there. in both cases, the identity of the vpn server can be tracked down, so don’t use it for doing something you should not. you still need to be able to trust the isp, the administrator of the datacenter on the other end, or the person who has the keys to your basement. there is no such thing as perfect security.
firewall it!
often forgotten: if you use a vpn, it bypasses all routers and firewalls on your premises. your home or office router usually provides a level of safety. with a vpn connection to the internet, that level of safety is removed, and you are wide open to attacks. don’t get lulled into a false feeling of safety, just because you use an encrypted connection. the other end isn’t encrypted, and your computer is as vulnerable as if you connect it straight to the internet via a cable modem or adsl connection without an intervening router. if you use a vpn, always use a personal firewall such as zonealarm etc. and set the security level to high.
other uses for a vpn
if you travel a lot, it probably happened to you many times: you ordered something with your credit card. the charge was denied. you call the card company and incur expensive long distance charges on your mobile. turns out your card is good. or sometimes, turns out your card was just blocked because of a possible security breach. what happened? ignorant of the fact that people travel, the webshop on the other side used a geo-location of the ip-address where you at. the ip says you are in timbuktu, whereas your address is in hicksville, usa. the charge is denied. or worse, reported to your credit card company, which blocks your card until you call them and tell them that you are on vacation in timbuktu. with a vpn that has its endpoint in the usa, this hassle is usually avoided. if the vpn server sits in los angeles, they think you are in los angeles. it usually works. the charge goes through. americans are allowed to travel freely in america, but never abroad. very paranoid shopping sites have a list of vpn servers and all alarm bells ring when you use them. then they want you to send a copy of your credit card and your driver’s license and your firstborn’s birth certificate to someone in bangalore. what a mess.
last words
the only halfway reliable security is end-to-end encryption. if your website supports it (this one does not) use the https protocol instead of http. to try, use https://www.yoursite.com instead of http://www.yoursite.com. for email, always use secure (ssl) connections for sending and receiving. some isps, hotels, hotspots etc. block the ports of these protocols. be very wary if they do. use your vpn. if they won’t let you use your vpn, move.

My write-up is based on an understanding of the business and the technology. Whether one should be paranoid or not is up to the user. As far as UltraVPN is concerned, it is fair to question the motives of its operator. We don’t know who runs UltraVPN. All we are told is that “UltraVPN servers are run by Lynanda .” Doesn’t mean a thing. My servers are run by datacenters in various parts of the world. However, I control them. And who’s Lynanda anyway? The only thing noteworthy about them I found was that they invented a piece of software that blocks Skype. Thanks a lot. Not the best reference for someone who supposedly protects your privacy. Or not.
Bandwidth ain’t free, hardware ain’t free. Operating a high performance VPN service for gadzillions of users needs a serious investment into hardware and bandwidth. Why they do it isn’t clear at all.
If you go to https://www.Lynanda.fr and to https://www.ultravpn.fr, your browser will throw a security certificate error, saying that the security certificate is bogus. This is common with amateur sites that don’t want to afford the $100 or so a decent certificate costs, but it is highly questionable for a company you entrust with all your data. And by the way, UltraVPN.fr is registered through an OVH company which prides itself in providing "Certificats SSL" amongst other products. They could have provided the registrant LYNANDA COMPUTING SERVICES (well, at least the website is registered to Lynanda...) with a decent certificate. I don't know what kind of certificate they use for UltraVPN, but if they can't come up with a real one for their own sites, I fear the worst. As explained here, non-bogus certificates issued by a trustworthy certificate authority is at the heart of a trustworthy OpenVPN service. (Also see "Paranoia 2" in my previous writeup. Your OpenVPN client can check for a valid certificate or certificate revokation to avoid these man-in-the middle attacks.)
The Swedish Pirate Party, which has an ideological motive to protect privacy, runs a well-known VPN called Relakks, (note the working certificate,) but even their VPN isn’t free, it costs EUR 45 a year. At least they have a halfway decent data privacy policy.
UltraVPN’s data privacy policy is notable by its absence. All they say is “No connection or traffic logs are kept.” With that “policy,” they could keep all data (except for the logs), or give the logs straight to the Deuxieme Bureau, or do whatever they please, except for keeping the logs.
They don’t need any logs. Most traffic in Europe already is logged. As for most in Europe, there is even an EU directive. UltraVPN doesn’t have to log anything, their ISP is REQUIRED to do that as per EU regulation 2006/24/EC . As you correctly write, China is not alone. Just a bit hamfisted. France has an especially bad history of privacy. Until 1999, all encryption in France was against the law. After 1999, only weak encryption was allowed. It needed EU regulations to make encryption legal in France. In Germany, the government now can legally put a Trojan on your computer (and I’m not referring to the rubbers.) Many countries are surrounding themselves with their very own firewalls. Of course, they are there to protect the citizenry from kiddie porn. Yeah, sure.

Any chance that ISG will ever support HTTPS/SSL? Right now when I try to use it all I get is a poorly constructed redirect to port 80 (really if you are going to do that, you should also change the protocol to HTTP).

I have used Witopia which is not a free service (around $40 pa) but seems pretty professional. There is an excellent 24 hrs online help desk, you choose which server you want to be connected via e. G. Which country and so far I have not had any problems. Most of the time I am in Kenya and I can download BBC iPlayer programmes without a problem which are normally only available in the UK and on one occasion I wanted something from another site and was told it was not available to UK residents. I was connecting via the Witopia London server. Google it and see their website and what they say to make your own mind up.

TOR is so slow, I use a hide my ass VPN sometimes which is okay for our type of security risks.
I am at Hotel Taj Bangalore, all such sites including ISG cannot be accessed, any solutions.

I try to always use a private browser when I'm on here and I never use my real name or email. I wouldn't use my real credit card either I would use a prepaid visa for my account. If I was to be more careful about who is watching me I would just use a program called TOR or Tails, both are designed with internet security in mind.

Why can't ISG just use Lets Encrypt for the cert? It's pretty easy to install and get running. Or heck, even CloudFlare if it's allowed with them (It's as simple as turning on the option! HTTPS has to be enabled, it's 2017 and although I've read other people suggesting to setup but there has been no progress. Why is the security being ignored?
The Opera browser (Android mobile and Windows version at least) offers browsing via a VPN to camouflage the sender location.
ISG is no longer accessible since some days (January 2020), when the VPN is turned on (off has no problem). Error message in the Opera Windows browser is "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN. Server IP address not found" - maybe blocking via missing DNS information. Does anybody has a similar experience or knows a workaround (apart from VPN off) ?
Well, maybe I should not rely on a chinese owned company to hide my browsing habits. Western agencies seem to collect their information less intrusively.
Probably it was a glitch since new year: Opera VPN and ISG are working again.
