Today I went around to quite a few privées.

Hi Gents.

Been to the above club 40 times with no bad experiences at all. In fact have to say its a pleasure to go there. Two nights ago a couple of strange things happened. Checked the bill on leaving and noticed five red bull drinks had been added to the tab. Apparently added to drinks I bought. I was 100 percent sober and watched the drinks being made with a clear unobstructed view. I can tell you no red bull tins were opened and poured into those drinks.

Secondly on leaving they added another 50 reals for "taking a lady out" of the club!!

What the hell is going on here. These are freelance ladies who walk in and use the club, they aren't paid by the club and don't work solely for this club.

I wouldn't pay the 50 and advise others not too. I didn't see any signs downstairs clearly stating this was the case.

I appreciate and understand the 50 real charge that applies when leaving. This was explained to me as a minimum bar bill you have to ring up in the club. If your bill is under 50 you pay the difference. A type of entry fee but you get the drinks. I don't have a single problem with this.

So I am left wandering what is going on, are these genuine mistakes on behalf of the bar staff or behind their friendly outward appearance is there actually a more sinister motive. I saw other customers looking as confused as I was and everyone seemed to be having issues with what was on their tabs at the end of the night.

If it happens again me and the guys will start using the other club down the road. It's a real shame as apart from the smoke it was a great little place.

Our adventures one night began at T 65 where I resampled the spinner from the week before, who was still quite tasty, but as often happens- the thrill was gone. Not sure I will repeat a third time. After that we stopped by New York (formerly Cancun). The vibe here is more dinner club / cosmopolitan. But in 30 years they only stopped me once asking what I had in my bags (I told them and that was good enough). There were two customs guys when I arrived who was just "eying" the passengers. I probably looks honest and innocent.

Observation. In all my years visiting the Cidade Maravilhosa, I have always encountered the stench of piss and crap around various locations throughout the city. Along with the smell of piss, I have seen a rise in this type of activity in Copa in the past 21 months, which is why I chose Barra (again, due to Safado69's report), where there is none of that; security is very tight out in Barra, lots of cops, and good broken windows policing practices are used.

At that location it's hard to get an Uber so I waited for my driver 1 hour. Then I cancelled and managed to get a new driver just as heavy rain started. I asked the second driver what could be the explanation for the first driver to accept the ride and then not showing up and also not cancel the trip he had accepted. The second driver explained that it looks bad for some drivers to cancel too many trips, he meant that the first driver probably hadn't realized first that I was waiting up in the hills and instead of cancelling the trip he just waited until I would cancel him. BTW, I didn't get a fine.

If I'm waiting for an Uber in an odd location I usually send a message to the driver just to get a communication with him. When doing that the driver usually won't cancel.

If you want to avoid the cancellations, order an Uber black. They won't cancel and aren't that much more expensive. In rare occasions they are even cheaper than the Uber X.I just checked, I ordered Uber 30 times during my last trip in October-November and my ride was canceled only once, when I tried to order Uber comfort. Usually drivers have to drive 2 miles to pick me up for less than $2 usd fare. I seen where a driver was 3 blocks away and didn't take my fare. Drivers being picky makes the app delayed. Some locals probably scared to take Uber (pandemic).

Related but not exactly the same, is the problem that these effing Brazilians have no fkn money.

Yesterday, I did a 85 reais uber ride, and the driver did not even have 15 reais to make change for 100.

So I just gave the assh LE 100.

If the drivers think that fares are too low at any given time they simply talk together via whatsapp groups and coordinate to decline or cancel tours and then quickly the algoritm will increase the fares.

New Year's Day. City is mostly closed, including privees in Centro.

With some downtime, decided to investigate the orange public bicycles (Bike Itau) scattered around the city.

I downloaded the Bike Itau app and registered a new account with my email, passport number, and credit card. I selected the Mensual Completo plan for $r39 per month. Within a few minutes, I was on my way from Catate to Gloria to Cinelandia to Carioca, then up to Av Presidente Vargas and finally Uruguaiana. I walked around for a while, but almost everything was closed, except for some restaurants and bars.

So I grabbed another bike, but this time the ride was different. Every time I turned the pedal, the bike would give me an extra boost. I pedaled again, and the bike boosted again. After a few minutes, I learned that I had chosen an electric bike. My first ever experience on one. It was actually a lot of fun, and obviously much easier to maneuver with the motorized assist. So apparently there is a mixture of normal and electric bikes available for use.

Overall Bike Itau is a fair price, good exercise, and the electric bicycles are quite fun. It's worth checking out.

I'm back in the states so a little advice about getting a rapid antigen for return to the USA. PCR tests will not work because all tests must be within 24 hrs of your flight and rapid PCR is very hard to find in Brazil.

I was "reliably" informed by the US Embassy that Clinica Galindo Campos on Ave Nossa Sra was the place to go. The morning before my flight I went there whereupon they said they only did PCR tests and referred me to a Sergio Franco down the street. I waited in line for an hour at said Sergio Franco before determining that yes, they did rapid antigen testing, but at a different location which I then went to.

I'm back in the states so a little advice about getting a rapid antigen for return to the USA. PCR tests will not work because all tests must be within 24 hrs of your flight and rapid PCR is very hard to find in Brazil.

I was "reliably" informed by the US Embassy that Clinica Galindo Campos on Ave Nossa Sra was the place to go. The morning before my flight I went there whereupon they said they only did PCR tests and referred me to a Sergio Franco down the street. I waited in line for an hour at said Sergio Franco before determining that yes, they did rapid antigen testing, but at a different location.

Convenience vs cost can always be debated and the test was only scrutinized once when I checked in with the airline, but this is not something I'd want to cut corners on. Regarding test locations for antigen tests in Copacabana. I've been looking around a bit for 2 days. Right now there is a high demand for covid tests in Rio. Outside some laboratories there are long lines with people waiting to get tested. Omicron is coming strongly. Prices between 100-150 reais.

* Drogaria Venncio: They have one or two locations in Copa that does antigen tests. One is close to the Bodytech gym on AV NS Copacabana. They are fully booked one week ahead.

* Laboratories: IMO the best option is to get tested at a laboratory in Copacabana. There are lots of them. Belizario, LabiExame, Sergio Franco, Bronstein, Labs A+ and a few more. The cheaper labs have lots of people crowded in waiting lines. The labs that are bit more expensive have less people waiting. No need to make an appointment for antigen tests (just PCR tests)..Always expect surprises in Brazil. An update on testing locations. I passed a bunch of laboratories on Friday. However within Brazilian culture if you do not display extreme jealousy and I do mean all consuming ridiculous jealously to your partner, it means you do not love them. I have also found out, after spending a lot of time in Rio over the last 7 years, that the jealousy is well founded. Pretty much every Brazilian will cheat on their partner if left alone. 90% of Brazilian girls that have gringo boyfriends will eventually cheat on them if you are not with them 100% of the time. I have had this happen to me and every one of my friends in Rio. Even with some girls that you would think would never cheat on their boyfriends eventually do so. If I had a dollar for every time I heard "I would never have thought she would see another guy" I would be a very rich man.

I think the reason goes like this. If my partner does not have extreme jealously for me, they do not love me. Hence if they leave me a lone for 1 second, they do not love me, hence I can cheat on them because they do not love me. Not logical by western standards but perfectly logical under Brazilian culture. Divorce rates are very high in Brazil, the number one reason, everybody is fucking everybody else.

Kept texting me to see when I would be back. I had to tell her to stop sending me messages and I would be back in the evening. So she goes out on the beach and meets a friend from londrina who works in rio. She asks me if I would be interested in having her friend tag along for the weekend at a great price.
