I rushed back to the room, opened the box, and gave her the first pill with some water. I put the other pill into her pants' pocket and told her not to forget to take it at 1am. I´m down here in Rio; enjoying the sand, sun, & bundas again. I personally hate HELP and I hope that it not only gets shut down but burns to the ground. I realize that I´m in the minority. Anyway, I was yaking with a hot little number at Monte Carlo who apparently plys her trade at HELP after hours. Yes, very amusing. Actually, when she mentioned a "Casa Branca" the first image that popped in my head was the Copacabana Palace. Maybe there´s a bar that is attached to the hotel that GDPs meet at now. Who knows. I´m more of a Termas guy anyway.

There is a new bar (previously reported on here) located on Duvier between NS Copacabana and Atlantica. It also has onsite cabines which can be "rented" for R$50. It is a small place. No way will it replace Help.

Went to Solarium tonight at around 7pm and had an awesome time. The location is fairly easy to get to from the beach hotels near the lagoon behind the beaches. The taxi cost me R$10. When you get there, they explain the prices to you (R$150 cash for the girl, the rest can be on credit cards for a R$25 fee). You get a locker key and change into a robe and sandals. You don't carry cash (it's in the locker), and flash the key number when you want to pay for any service or drinks. First I got a full hour massage for R$100. It was better than some I've had on the beaches or from professional masseuses in the USD.

ET - I think that´s the place she was talking about. I remember her mentioning it was at or along the street of Duvier. She balked at the idea of working at Balcony or MP and I don´t blame her.

I only use buses to Lapa - plenty of them, like the 464 which then continues on to VM. A taxi would be about 18R (I'll look up the average rate in Ruas and correct this if I'm wrong).

One guy in particular stayed there with me until 9am, still drinking. There were about 15 people left over from a street party still jamming on make-shift instruments. It was a blast. The guy I was with spoke no portuguese, but ended up taking some 20's something girl to breakfast with us. At no point did it seem dangerous.

Lapa has a lot of bare-bones accomodations, too low budget even for me - so I´ve never tried any of them. Lapa can be reached via the metro (get off at Cinelandia). And there are frequent buses that connect with Copa. Almost any bus that heads to downtown or the rodoviaria wil pass by Lapa. I suppose a taxi should run around R$15-20, maybe less if you get a driver that´s honest enough to use the meter.
I usually stay in the neighborhood of Catete or Gloria, which are both within walking distance of Lapa. The best hotels are the Hotel Gloria and the Hotel Florida (there´s another good one that escapes my mind at the moment). There are several low cost hotels that aren´t good for hosting guests but fine if you just want a place to crash. There is a decent love hotel called the Hotel Diamond and also Hotel Love Time is close by. There are really cheap "per hour" dives were you can take your new found friend such as the Motel Ouro Preto. Quite a few street walkers plying their trade at night. Half of them are most definitely "bonecas". Perhaps I should also mention that Termas Rio Antigo is in the same area. If they´d ever staff that place with hot chicks it would be a great Termas.
I don´t think most tourists would want to spend their vacation in these parts of town though.

It is very easy to get your pockets picked in Lapa. The thieves are organized and will hit you on both sides and be gone with your stuff before you even realize it.
And the area behind Pizzaria Guanabara, and up around the famous steps of Lapa, is definitely dangerous after dark.

Actually that part of town isn´t the Centro but you go through it on the way to Centro (where 4X4, T-65, etc. is located).
Anyway, I´ve never stayed at Hotel Florida but I think their prices are usually around US$100 a night. Hotel Gloria is a bit more - can´t remember the price because it´s been a while since I´ve stayed there. Depending on exchange rates or current specials it can be a bit cheaper or quite pricey.
I remembered the name of the other hotel as I walked past it last night: it´s the Hotel Imperial. Last time I checked with them they were charging 140 Reais per night (less on weekends). It´s on the Rua do Catete and the Catete metro stop is only 150 meters away, plus there´s a branch of HSBC bank just a few doors down where you can draw out more dinheiro. Brazil is dealing with inflation so it seems that prices for everything has gotten higher & higher.
Keep in mind that if you speak with the management directly you can often get a significant discount off of the posted price. The place I stay at (which I´ll decline to mention) has a posted price of 120 Reais per night but I usually only pay 70 to 80 Reais. Away from the tourist areas and in other parts of Brazil this is common practice. I hope your Portuguese is pretty good.
Unfortunately I only have a couple of days left in Brazil and then I´ll turn my sights to the lovely beavers of Canada. Them French-Canadian chicks are something else. But tonight I´ll be making a stop at Quatro por Quatro.

It really depends what you want. Tijuca is nice. Very non-touristy. Some of it is walking distance to VM. No beach though. And you need Porto to check the ads and get an apartment at knock-down rates.
Botogogo is a lovely area, very little crime and hardly any tourists. But it's not cheap. Advantage is you can book it thru the same agents that rent Copa apartments. Great for cinemas (3 arthouse, 2 multiplex), trendy bars and so on. Good shopping. Easy transport into town or Copa via Metro or buses. Very little gdp.
I think a lot of other places are either very expensive, like Botanico and Leblon, or cheerfully falling to bits, like Lapa and Catete.
You can also rent impressive places in Santa Teresa - sort of upmarket backpacker territory - but you have to navigate dodgy areas getting into town.
Across the water Niteroi is nice, non-touristy, pretty safe if you stay in the main areas, and reasonable amount of p4p.
But to be honest, if you know Rio, you know these options, and if you don't, the easiest non-touristy, reasonably prices area without too much crime is Centro. It's where quite a few mongers base themselves after tiring of the Copa-Ipanema merry-go-round. You'll probably need basic Porto again to get an apartment, but you can get a GF hotel at a lot less than Copa, and have p4p on your doorstep as well.
As Devilspinkick says, turning up on the doorstep gives you lots of negotiating power that booking from afar doesn't. If necessary, book into a hostel or cheap hotel for a night or two so you can look at your options (this is the way a lot of Brasilians do it when visiting Rio).

My personal choice.
Besides of being a big VM-fan I obviously do a lot of mongering in Centro. My favourite bottom-low place for a cheap quickie is Rua Buenos Aires 85 (list no: 11). I almost always manages to find a nice girl there.
When I feel the need for a session in a relaxed and clean environment I usually choose one of the Av Rio Branco casas (list no: 1 and 2).

I prefer to visit the centro casas just before noon, when the girls have just arrived. That way I have the opportunity of being the first client of the day. If you go there at lunch time the good casas might be crowded and the best girls all occupied.

I hear all the criticism from some of you guys and it has given me some pause in this, but ultimately, I know I am right in my statements about her. There are really only 2 people on the planet that know all the details of what happened between this girl and myself. Lapa is a great area full of people and culture. I was there on a Friday night with some friends, and it started out slow, but the evening got better. One guy in particular stayed there with me until 9am, still drinking. There were about 15 people left over from a street party still jamming on make-shift instruments. It was a blast. The guy I was with spoke no Portuguese, but ended up taking some 20's something girl to breakfast with us. At no point did it seem dangerous.
ryjerLapa is surely one of the most interesting area in Rio for me. I was in Rio about 2 months ago and went to Lapa at least 5x during my 10night visit. The Bars are lovely, people are nice, you find music of any taste (Rock, Latin, Oldies etc.). Though I speak only a few portuguese words, I came along very well with the local people and the bartenders. I ended up one night Bar-hoping with 2 nice Brazilian non GDP (I think they were secretaries) and had a wonderful night with them (no sex, just having fun, flirting and laughing). Definitely a place to visit in Rio. I felt save all the time in Lapa.

My personal advice:
I prefer to visit the centro casas just before noon, when the girls have just arrived. That way I have the opportunity of being the first client of the day. If you go there at lunch time the good casas might be crowded and the best girls all occupied.

Observations, opinions & recommendations:
• Print out Sperto’s & Bubba Boys maps & lists, take with you.
• Learn some Portuguese. You’re in their country, try to speak their language. If you have remedial Spanish skills it is helpful.
• Drink domestic beer (Skol, Brahma etc.), cheaper easier & you know what’s in your drink.
• Know your surroundings, the taxis tend to go in circles. Intentional or not you’ll save yourself time & money by barking out where to go if you know it.
•C arry hotel business card w/ you all times, taxi drivers don’t always know location by hotel name.
• Addresses & street signs very accurate in Rio, print out addresses of your destinations. When you are walking the locations are easy to find.
• Always, always question your bill, they will tack on extra s—t as habit (for example, nice restaurant in Recreio dos Bandeirantes- double charged me, my partner caught it, took 10 minutes of arguing and pointing at the prices on the menu to get the bill correct)
• Bring small notepad & pen everywhere, excellent for communications, negotiations & ph. #’s!
• Use this notepad at every establishment you have any doubt about pricing. Ask the front desk to write down all options, duration, room choices and drink prices. We started this ½ way thru the trip & clarity was achieved. No confusion, no hassle.
• Don’t recommend tipping, doesn’t seem customary, might even laugh at you, small change may be, IMHO.
Day 1: (Friday)
Arrive at airport 9am. Went straight to the booths for taxi, pay US $, easy no haggle. Staying at hotel Ibis R D J, Centro. Reserved rooms on web site by credit card: http://www.ibishotel.com/gb/hotel-5534-ibis-Rio-de-janeiro-centro/index.shtml
Walking distance to 4X4, T 502 etc.
Pay cash in advance (seemed weird but no problem) 120R per night. Nice rooms. Good breakfast, friendly English speaking hotel staff.
*Definitely girl friendly, only one at a time though (no festas)
Need reaies, vitamins & sustenance: walk down R. Da Carioca/ Ave Nilo Pecanha to corner of Ave Rio Branco. Large underground mall SW corner, just past open square. Cambio: down escalator (2. 15R=1$). Back up escalator east exit, on Rio Branco: large drogaria. Helpful in the back, show qty and cost on computer, hassle free vitamin purchase.
Back to hotel- money in safe. 200R in money belt, 200R in shoe under gel foot pad, 200R in wallet. Ready for food and poonani. Back down R. Da Carioca/ Ave Nilo Pecanha, great Kilo Restaurant (I think name is Poa? ) south (right) side of street. 2 kilos of meet, 2 beers, 25 or so R’s.
It’s 1pm now. T 502 & 4X4 supposed to be open. Midget door on metal gate is open at 502. Crawl thru. They tell us no abrir until 2pm. Bulls—t. I’m horney. Across the street to 4X4. Whiskeria won’t open till 4pm, "but you can go into Terma". Don’t want to go thru rigmarole of putting a robe on if only 2 skrags in there. Back to T502. Sit out front chain smoking.
T502:2pm, abrir! Pay entrance (all prices listed on wall) get our entry drinks. A few garotas. Approached by one. Can’t figure us out. Broken, sloppy Porto mixed w/ Spanish. These gringos are green! No mind. She laughs, brings amigas over. Pointing at us laughing that we can’t speak any porto. We laugh more than them, ice broken. Nice quality. Start eyeballin’ plan C & B. Waiting for plan A to show up. A group sits with us, getting wasted together. One is a dark modelo, plan A in the sights. One makin’ fun of my partner, gonna be his grudge f---.
Going up: Grudge f--- partner up 1st. Front desk hacks him for the suite room. Did not realize, probably did not care. (you pay cash on the way up for room? Did not catch that in guides) I’m next. They try to charge 180ishR. Borracho courage. "F. That, muito dinheiro! " Price backed down to 130ishR for the normal room. Wait! This is the Mecca of culo & I forgot to negotiate ahead! Idioto. No probel. Excellent BBBJ, full service and just like the dessert plate at a fine restaurant after dinner, the culo is spread open and offered up without solicitation. I love this country!
Back down stairs, party and drink some more with our Garotas. Plan for a trip to Copa and festa manana. I negotiate 300R, partners get theirs down to 200R all day and night. I’m week for the culo. Get ph #’s and bail. No intention of filling my pockets with ice cubes when I go to the North pole. Just testing the water. Plan D, just in case.
Walk across the street, check out 4X4 Whiskeria. Quality-a-plenty. Worth the cover to check it out. Did not partake.
Get dinner, revitalize and get a Taxi to Florida & Escandinavia. Get there 11ish.
Florida 1st: Pay cover, upstairs and oh nooooo: sausage fest, pickle party! (must be a ship in) Friggen dudes dancin’ on the catwalk, not appealing. React quickly, grab one of the few available garotas. Ugly mug, dark but sweet bunda. Don’t care. To the cabin. Descent facilities from what I remember. Prices in guide accurate. They give you a magnetic card to track your drinks. Watch that card. Garota could walk off w/ it and by a round for the sailors. Special thanks: to my partners for sitting in there while I conducted business. They did not have many choices, too many sausages, not enough tacos. Bad ratio. Let’s try next door.
Escandinavia: a sad little place. Same problem, sea of trouser trouts. Have to make a move. Spot a spinner, peroxide blonde. OK I’ll go light this round. She’s jiggen around like a wack job. Get closer, sunken cheeks. . Crackhead. Oh well, probably get cheaper rate. Closer, whoa, really cheap. Bring her over to our table, now the partners are thoroughly grossed out. They say let’s get outa here! Wait, have to close the deal. How does it work here? F-it, "toda a noite? E’ possivel? Don’t remember discussing quanto. Vamos to my hotel? Partners are cringing. But. All night excellent service, culos, bbbj’s, swallow. Wacked is good! Wake up in morning for last round, sober now. "I have to go to work". Give 200R for excellent service, too much but she had no purse, no cell phone and probably doesn’t work very often. She could not figure out how to get to the lobby and get a cab, had to walk her down, front desk shaking their heads I’m sure. F-them.
Day 2, (Saturday)
Centro Termas closed. It’s VM day!
Need good food. East from hotel on R. Da Carioco/ R. Frei Caneca toward Praca da Republica turn left on 3rd or 4th street. A lot of outdoor places, great food, treated us well. Closed Sunday daytime and I assume holidays.
VM: This is Mogadishu meets Fallujah. Black hawk down. My style. Now we’re talkin’. Arrive 2pm, a little early, not yet hoppin’ but some Garotas. Start slammin’ Skols, have to get primed. Partner is drinkin vodka on the rocks, what’s in the ice? Even worse, what’s the clear liquid in the vodka bottle on the shelf? Start walking down all the indoor alleys. The one with the loop most active. All the people are cool to us. Good times. Settle on a place with qty of garotas. Questionable quality. We all grab one. Cost: 20ish R. Cabins are not as bad as described by some, but this aint the Hilton for sure. No ceiling? I can hear moaning next door. One partner barks "quit your moaning". This is entertainment but no chance of finishing. Next place. Girls are coming to work it’s 6-7-8pm, can’t remember. We settle into another place. Ugly skrag sits next to me, partners cringing. I go to take her up to gross them out, she asks for cinquenta R on the way up a tiny stair case. Not worth $23 for the effect. Looking at her going up the stairs grosses me out. Back down. Let’s go. Where is vodka drinking partner? Heaving in the toilet. Yikes! Man down. We’re in Fallujah after dark with a wounded partner. Took one to the stomach (too much clear liquid from the vodka bottle). Carry him out on our shoulders looking for a friendly APC (yellow cab w/ blue stripe and a meter that works). 4 cabs out front, all outa service, drivers drinking and f---ing. Stumble down R. Lopez de Sousa. No taxis! Another block or so find a taxi. We get out in one piece! Now that was friggen fun. I recommend this experience.
Midnight or so: Back to Florida for a solo mission to get an all nighter. Jumped by ugly face. Toda a noite for 200R + 50R bar fine. I am truly week for the culo, should have hacked her to 150R. Whatever, good all night activity and did not have to watch her with one eye open, good screening the night before determined as descent garota. Asked for taxi money in morning. "That’s all I got girl". Laughed and left.
Day 3 (Sunday)
Centro Termas closed again.
It’s Copa day. Have to get some legitimization photos. Wonder on the beach. Touts are annoying. Simple "nao, nao! " When that doesn’t work use the last resort "spreken ze duetch? " always works. Hang around Atlatntica restaurants till Help opens.
Help: got there early around 11pm or so. No matter, quality-a-plenty! Wow, so much poontang. Reasonable priced drinks, took awhile to figure out the drink ticket thing. This is a smorgasbord of garotas. All sizes all shapes. A little leary of the overpricing rumors. Let’d dig in: find plan C, there’s plan B, and oh yaaa, plan; A- tiny spinner, dark, classy. Rub up to her, starting at 500R. She speaks English. I say "you’re gonna leave me poor". Laughing but won’t budge. My partner sits down with one, she says "300R, if you were ugly I’d charge you 500R". Yes I am ugly. Have to lower my standards if I don’t wanna pay $230. We work the crowd for several hours and have a blast doing it. This place is great! 8’s, 9’s everywhere and it’s Sunday night. It’s getting late, plan C in effect, nice 8ish MILF settles for 260R all night. "you’re staying where? Centro, I ‘ll need Taxi money" she speaks too much English. We haggle to 280R. Chr—t these goratos are tough. We’re looking for a cab and she says "take my friends taxi" I say no and drag her down the street to a legit looking yellow cab. She protests. I say "just get in! " off to a sour start. No worries, make the best of it. She lightens up back in the room. BBBJ, good service, all positions, no culo, nice masturbation on herself to finish me with a visual. I got lucky and good screening helps.
Day 4 (Monday)
Let’s travel! The Beverly Hills of Rio. Rocereio dos Bandeirantes. There’s a Benz dealer on Av das Americas, must be upper class! 70ish R taxi ride from Centro. Cool driver, stopped for a lot of pictures on the way. Got there early so ate at the restaurant down the street. Good food, check your bill as always. Walking distance from Ancora and Paris Café.
Termas Ancora do Recreio: good quality, good quantity but bad attitudes. Stayed for a couple hours drinking, no activity. Give you magnetic swipe wrist band for tracking drinks.
Paris Café: now we’re talking. Strip cub atmosphere. Give you a paper card to mark down your drinks. Loaded, I say loaded with prime poontang dressed slutty. Ya! I love it. Settle on a stunner dark garota w/ short hair, tall, long legs, 8ish. Great attitude. Start drinking shots and get plastered. Partner picks his, another modelo. Head up to cabins. Really nice and big. So. She shoves a towel at the base of the door, cracks the window open and lights up a joint. "Para Voce? " wasted & stupid "sim" now I’m wasted& stoned. Idioto! Could have gone sour, but. . This was my best experience in Rio. She was super fun, all holes, BBBJ. Epic! This is the Mecca!
Day 5 (Tuesday)
Plane leaves at 8pm. Wake up late, check out. Hotel has very secure system for luggage storage. Out to 4X4, we have not been yet! Oh sh—t, everything is closed when we get outside. What the F? We hoof it to 4X4, closed, 502, closed. Is this a holiday? Back to the hotel ask front desk. Verified, holidy. Check Sperto and Bubba Boys lists. Looks like Monte Carlo is open on Sundays. They have to be open today! Not much time left. In the Taxi to Copa.
Monte Carlos: I hate robes! Leave my pantalones on, I’m goin’ commando today. This aint no fasion show and no one wants to see my legs anyway. Upstairs to the bar. Oh sh—t! It’s packed with super modelos, light, dark, blonde, brunette, skinny, big bunda, they got it all! Why the h-ll didn’t we come here before? Bad luck can become good luck. We all settle on our choices. A rare occasion that I get my plan A immediately. She speaks English. 8ish blond. BBBJ, no culo, but no broblem, the service was impeccable. Thank you Sperto and Bubba Boy: a perfect end to a perfect trip.

It's really interesting, that over the last year or so, more and more people are making this trip to VM. Or better yet, you find newbies asking how to get there. VM is a great experience. I think everyone should at least see it for themselves. I just hope that with all the great experiences that we post about VM, we aren't giving newbies a false sense of security about going there. It a place where, if some shit jumped off, you could be literally and figuratively FUCKED!!!
Compared to what happens in copa, how much worse could it be in VM?? A lot worse. Not complaining, just an observation on a really seedy part of down, that I happen to enjoy.

It is a shorter plan ride, and some may say no, but I have notice that as of late some Americans have chosen to travel more to DR than Brazil. If Cuba and America become more amicable and Americans have the choice to come and go as they please, do you think that Rio might become less attractive due to distance and prices of the GDP. Just wondering what the forum thinks. Oh by the way this place is Great. The people and the vast wealth of information. Lets look at it from all aspects. Price of the p4p, upto distance of travel and from what I have been told the change of the women physic in Rio. They are now looking a little heavier than in the past etc.

When traveling, I have one simple rule--NO POLITICS and I believe this board would do well to follow suit.
I was in Capetown SA a few years ago in a nice bar, everyone was having a good time..I struck up a conversation with some fellow who intimated that he was once part of the South African army who enforced Apartheid..things started getting tense..I simply stopped him and said--hey man, I'm here on vacation..would u like a drink? We proceded to have a few rounds and joked about the different pretentious spinners in the bar...good times without the fuss and tension of politics.
We are all here in search of one common thing: The pursuit and procurement of top shelf brazilian BUNDA at a reasonable price..our ideological tendencies need not matter.

Just came home from a quit bad night. Has the girls get mad about the prices? I'm mostly go to termas or help/balcony and on those places its around 100 to 300 Rs depening on girl and time.

Ing driver did it. She say give me 150Rs or I screem to the police, the damn driver went out and should tell the police.
To be honsest I got a little affraid and say ok. But then we start to drive and I got pissed of. I say ok go to the police then I don't care or to casablanca, the driver went to the club.
There it end up talking to manager and he didn't care about the damn girl so I said to her take this 40Rs and get out of my face.

Does anyone know the current prices at Termas 502 in Centro?I was there late March and it was R$20 entrance and R$185.00 to session. It was my first-time, and I enjoyed it. There is no need to beat yourself up..u recovered nicely. There are always some GDPs who will try to take advantage of who they perceive an easy mark. You were in a no win situation, where it seemed that the cab driver was in on the scam.

Just arrived in Rio this Sunday morning, my 6th trip. This was the first time taking the Real Bus from GIG airport. Man, what have I been missing! The cost was only $R7 and the trip wasn't too long - only 50 minutes door to door. Compare that with the normal $R45 cab fare that I have been paying in the past, and that's hailing the legit cabs upstairs. The bus first stopped at Rodovaria bus station, then somewhere in Centro (downtown), then Santos Dumont airport, and finally Copacabana. I told the driver I was staying at Ibiza Hotel on Rua Beflort Roxo, even though I wasn't, so the bus driver dropped me off on the corner of Rua Belfort Roxo and Barrata de Ribeiro, near the apartment I was staying at.
Took a nap to get recharged and hit Luomo, which is always my first stop when I arrive in Rio on a weekend. I got there at around 8:30p. Rumors of Luomo's demise was not greatly exaggerated. At this time, I counted 17 guys and about 8 girls. Where the hell were all of them? Doing programas? By 10:30p, there were maybe 8 more girls, and a lot of the guys had left by then. So the ratio became about 16 girls to 12 guys. Pretty terrible.
Saw some of the usual suspects - Ruby/Hoopy, Bea, Jamelle. Nothing appetizing for me - did not see Giselle or Natalia. Finally, one really cute girl caught my eye. I think she is new to Luomo. I swear her face looked like Ellen Page from the movie Juno, except she had lighter colored hair. Body was pretty nice looking. Are you confusing the demise of Help with Luomo? Luomo management has made some unpopular cost saving changes but I haven't heard any discussion about closing shop. Sixteen girls on a Sunday night in the low tourist season is actually a pretty good slate for Luomo. Sorry about your unintentional dry run.

I don't think Gavazzi took my comments to mean that I was giving him a beating, or that he was beating himself up. It's just that looking at red flags would have avoided getting to the taxi to begin with. We've all been where Gavazzi was - with our own variations on the story. I guess "demise" was a wrong choice of words. Haha. I meant to use a word for "going downhill", as I have read on this message board that many Copa termas have been headed that direction. Then again, many posters are comparing these termas to the hey days of the early 2000's. Nevertheless, I hear Monte Carlo is back on the way up. I shall see tomorrow at MC, as it is coupon night there for $R60 off cabine fee for a session.

I'm curious what that really means.
1. Does it mean that the owners of Help are going to open a club in the basement of the Iberostar hotel?
OR
2. Does it mean that the Iberostar has opened a club in the hotel they just bought from the Meridien that they refurbished top to bottom and inside and out and the girls from Help are just going to start going to this new club?
I would suspect that it would be closer to choice number 2, since there is a large space in the Iberostar for a club, many years ago in the 80's when it was the Meridien they had a club called Regine's and there has been no club there for many years, so it is possible that the new management is opening a club there. But I wouldn't think they want the GDP's from Help but then can they stop them?
I think it would be a great idea, think about how many Mongers would stay in the hotel. Go downstairs to the club, have a few drinks, dance then take you're new found one night stand up the elevator to your room. It eliminates the taxi problem outside and many security problems.
This club/space although a good size is no where close to the size of Help. It had a small dance floor/a bar, tables. A good size but not as big as Help, as a matter of fact not many clubs are, it will be hard to replace.

This is confusing on several points. First, I don't recall there being a club in the Meridian but in any case, the Meridian has been boarded up for some time now. There were lots of clubs near the Meridian, most of which are still there, seedier than they were, and none large enough to replace Help. You could say that Mabs used to be the TA of more than 20 years ago. You could still find a friend there today.
What does not make sense is that if they close Help, they would just let it relocate in Copacabana. The whole reason for closing it is to clean up and just moving it elsewhere is not likely to make the civic minded folks pushing this very happy.
If it is closed, the girls will probably redistribute themselves along the various restaurants, bars and clubs along Copacabana. This is not good for either the buyers or sellers. It's like going from a supermarket back to the corner grocery. Maybe another "supermarket" will emerge. Anyway, mongering won't go away, it may just be decentralized.

The Meridien is owned by PREVI, the employee pension fund of the Bank of Brasil. It was leased to the Spanish hotel chain Iberostar in 2007 and closed for renovation. All work came to a halt in 2008 when disagreements over costs reached an impasse. The Rio de Janeiro government is anxious to find an alternative tenant to replace the millions of revenues lost since the closure of le Meridien. PREVI has been searching for a new tenant but asserts that there is an agreement with the city of Rio de Janeiro that it may only operate as a hotel under an agreement dating back to the 1970s when it was constructed to a height which exceeded building limits for Copacabana. There have been several proposals for mixed use of the building as offices, condominiums and hotel but the use restriction seems to prohibit alternative businesses from operating in the facility. Given this situation, it is highly unlikely that Rio politicos after taking credit for closing Help would be a party to lifting the restrictions to allow Help to relocate in the building.
However, in Brasil government actions are not always as one might expect.

So 3pm rolls around and I hop on the Subway Metro at Cardeal Arcoverde station. I get off on the Uruguiana stop and hoof it 5 minutes to get to 4x4 at around 3:45 pm. I go into the boite and there are over 60 girls in there, and maybe 20 guys, which is less dudes than usual, although I know it will pick up fiercely by 7pm. Saw some of the usual suspects - Melany (beautiful red-head), Cher (blondie), and Jully (petite dark haired girl). Didn't see Amanda (Halle Berry looking chick with the big bunda).
I then sit, talk to a few girls and finally settle in on a little dark-haired spinner. She asked me to guess her age and I said "23". She jokingly said "I am about to cry...I'm 19". I hate to break the news to you, but the flakeout rate on a terma girl getting up to go to the beach to meet you, is high. These girls are so tired from all the hours they are forced to work, including all the drinking they do. What they tell you at 8pm, and what they do at 10 am, when they decide they rather sleep in, rather then make 200 reals, are 2 different things. You would have to offer them alot more than the usual rate, to get them motivated to get up. They know they will make the money at the terma. There are girls that work the day and girls that work the termas. You want to stick to one or the other. You have a better chance of getting the girls to meet you after work to go out at night than you do the day. That even is hard because they might be too tired to go out after. It all depends on how many tricks they did that night. The girl that said she would meet you might not have gone home until 5 am. She isn't getting up at nine.

In the group was myself, my female cousin, an american who teaches favela kids english, and 4 brasilian women. Now going to dinner at someone's house, and taking a cab up the winding roads is another thing.
It was worth the experience, but not for the faint of heart. The music was loud, the girls bangin', and the drinks cold. I was greatly surprised to see the guys with automatic weapons walking in lines through the party, like a patrol or something. I felt like I was dressed perfect for the occasion, but my cousin wished she was wearing less, and looked more like the other girls.
It was a great time. We danced until 5am, then I took my girl home, she had to open the salon at 9am this morning. If you ever hit one of these parties, wear foam ear plugs.
Oh yeah, when were leaving, and just reaching Sa Farreira, I ran into some club girl that I knew.

ryjerI have been in that favela many times. It is quite safe. There are a set of steps you can walk down to leave the favela. Go up the road way, and leave via the steps. If the police see gringos going in and out off the favela they will make trouble for you. The favela even has a internet cafe half way up the hill. Near the hair dressers there.

I agree about the noise, I used to live nearby. The music often starts Friday evening and runs until Monday morning. You can hear it on N.S. Copacabana. As for trouble, there is a lot of shooting, both intramural and intra-gang, plus police raids every month or so.

Day 6
Went to 4x4 on a Friday afternoon at 4:45p. Pretty packed sausage fest compared to yesterday. So I waited for the girl I met upon leaving 4x4 yesterday and she showed up a little after 5pm. We chatted in the boite for about 20 minutes and then headed up to the cabine for a 1-hour session. The session was pretty phenomenal. One of the main reasons is because I really clicked with this girl and had kind of an emotional connection with her. Whoa, now I'm starting to sound like a chick! Haha. Nevertheless, this was probably the first time where it crossed my mind to re-session with the same girl within the same night. I fought the urge and decided to give Luomo another shot, as a poster on this board said it was jumping last Friday night. Anyway, total damage was $R240 at 4x4.
So after leaving Centro and going to my apartment for a bit, I arrive at Luomo around 8:45pm. I walk into the boite and bam! Pretty much the same old disappointing crew from last Sunday night - seemed to be about 20 girls. I did see one new old face, ie, blonde Doris from Solarium is now at Luomo. Anyway, it was slim pickens to me, so I went to the relax room and chilled. There I met a cool ISG'er and we chatted for a bit. Had some time to kill on Saturday, so I went to see "Wolverine" at Rio Sul during the day. Pretty good movie, but not as good as the trailers make it look. After the movie, I decided to hit Monte Carlo tonight. Got there at 6:30 pm and there were about 20 girls and around 8 guys. Chatted with 2 girls that used to work at Luomo, but their names escape me. I asked one of them why they switched to Monte Carlo and she said "Luomo tem poucos homens", ie, has too few male customers. Another of these ex-Luomo girls then tried to persuade me by saying "I promise you it will be good...if you're not satisfied, you can have your money back". That's actually a first money-back-guarantee that I've heard straight from a GDP's mouth. Anyway, I declined and after about an hour, I didn't see anything I really liked so I decided to hit Solarium. Btw, total damage at MC was $R60 entry fee.
I arrived at Solarium around 8pm. There were about 30 girls and 15 guys. I immediately sat down with a stunning brunette named Bea. She used to work at Monte Carlo. After some screening, I find out she has an Argentinian boyfriend and she said she "doesn't kiss in the boite", in addition to her being kind of distant in the boite. 3 red flags right there, and no way I can be sure she will kiss once we are in the room...So as appetizing as she was, I decided against taking her upstairs. So Lara (who has a twin sister) was also sitting there at the time. I chatted with her for about an hour. She's a sweet and cute girl. I had sessioned with her before, about 18 months ago. On my final day, I was lucky Luomo happened to be open on Mother's Day and it was the only game in town. I got there at 4:30p and there were literally 4 girls and 5 guys in the boite. Both also have some great specials from time to time like you can pay the entrance but the cost goes toward your drinks. MC has one of those on May 14. Solarium has a R$30 discount also on May 26 (Tuesday).
Also, both Solarium and Monte Carlo have frequent visitor programs. Solarium's is spend R$700 and your entrance is free. MC is spend R$500.
L'uomo no longer has a discount program. However, if you arrive before 7:00 the entrance is R$30. This really is not that big of a deal if you take a girl, since if you take a girl they discount you R$10. Net savings if you take a girl therefore is R$20. But, if you just want to go and hang out, you save R$30.
The entrance to 4x4 is free if you take a girl before 5:00.
Centaurus does not have a discount program. In fact, if you are a gringo they will pad your bill and everyone will have their hand out for a tip. Should you decide to go, just tell them you are not sure you want to go with a girl and they will charge you (unless you are Brazilian or hold your breath until you turn blue) $120. The "normal" charge is R$400 which includes a 40 minute session. Do make sure you ask for a printout of your charges. They will do whatever they can to try to get over on you. I still remember the time they tried to charge me for 16 caipirinhas. The girl I was with weighted all of 95 lbs. The drinks there are small, but still. The girl came to my defense and they reduced it to 8.

I stayed at the Hotel Copa Linda last time I was in Rio. It was R$100/day (didn't ask about hourly rates). I stopped by Vanity to ask what their daily rates were and he told me R$150. These prices make apartments or the Ibis downtown look even more attractive. Yes, Metro to São Cristóvão and then a short walk to VM. Metro is OK but I prefer to take the bus 455 Meier from Copacabana. Going by metro takes more or less 35 minutes. Taking the bus can take anything between 25-60 minutes. Usually I arrive in 30 minutes when going by bus.
I know that everybody don't share my opinion, but I think VM is perfectly safe. If you go late it's good to take some caution on the way to/and leaving VM.
I think to many mongers give a horror picture of how unsafe VM is. The first time it might seem a bit disturbing, but you'll quickly get used to VM (and love with all of your heart:D).
I guess some people just don't feel comfortable at VM. They "do" VM once just like they do the Sugar Loaf, Cristo and the favela-tour. "Wow, what an awful disgusting place...". No problem at all, we are all different. IMO Rios biggest shithole is called Help. :)

The one on Princesa Isabel on the junction of Copa and Leme may suit you. I always use it. Look for the mini supermarket on the Leme side of the street. Nearby is a car rental. You go up one floor in an apartment block and it overlooks the street. (If you scan the windows of the floors above the street from ground level you can see the gym.)

It's not the flashiest of gyms in Copa (there are many) but it has a good number of running machines, treadmills, fixed and free weights etc. There is a studio at the back with classes. You can get the price down by a) not having the use of the studio, b) only using it at off-peak times of c) if you are good at haggling. Prices are on the wall behind the reception (to your right as you come to the top of the stairs).
The trainers are all very friendly and give free help and advice.
Can't remember what I paid but I'll look it up and try to add it to the post.* As with any gym, rates will vary depending on how long you are staying. This one is very reasonable, but they will of course whack it up for anything less than a month. Try to avoid the 'day rate.'

I would add that sometimes the fingerprint scanner (used to admit members) didn't work properly, and occasionally I was asked if I had signed up for the full membership or just off-peak. It's a big mostly open-air place. Very laid back and, like most of North Zone, full of ordinary people. Nowhere near the Sao Cristovao metro though - the suburb covers quite a large area and also includes Sao Cristovao park that sometimes has nice exhibitions and a fabulous Temple of Apollo that makes for way cool photos surrounded by a lake. The zoo at the end of the park is a bit scruffy but ok for a place to take a garota that goes all gooey over animals (especially if she's never been to a decent zoo). But if you can dance forro (or especially if you dance forro) then the market is a good bet and it won't even break the bank when you spend money on her.

I remember leaving Sao Cristovao one particular night last June with a group of Brasilian friends. As we crossed the street to catch a bus back to Ipanema, I realized there was a blue neon light above a staircase close to the corner, across the street from the main entrance.

This place is extremely expensive, even by American standards. I was a member for just over a month to the one located a block away from Rua Visconde de Piraja, closer to the Leblon area. It is an excellent gym, with your own trainer for every session you show up for. I was not interested in the personal tran. since I already know my fair share of Exercise Phys. and athletic trainning. I still ended up paying around $125.00 US for those few weeks. Damn expensive. Oh, and that was over 3 years ago. Must be more costly now.
I use smaller gyms, and bargain for a deal according to my length of stay. Also, I have used the Muscle Beach outdoor gym which usually is set up in November - December time.

My apartment is right next to what was happening. It was a sight to see. The helicopters were flying in and out of the blocks and circling the favela letting of multiple rounds. Everyone was in doorways or hanging out of their windows watching. Amazing to see for a first timer in Rio. Yes my water was out all day also, as was many of the cheaper termas we hit in centro.

Centro is a mad busy place, but once you get your bearings its ok. I felt safe walking around there. I had afew looks from people but that was it! Hey Kid if you don't mind me asking, were the people "looked" at you b/c you stood out or b/c you were visiting 4X4 and BA85?
I took my first trip to Centro Sunday. And the place was dead as a ghost town. Hardly anyone around. But I felt very safe walking alone among the many small streets. Walked around trying to locate some of the establishments. Found BA85 and 4X4 and took pics of the buildings. Then took ferry to Niteori (sp? ). The ride was short but the view was magnificent. I recommend it for anyone. Looking forward to going to Centro later today.

i have been neglecting some duties here as i am still going thru rio withdrawal and then came the holiday weekend. now to some of your questions.
we arrived in rio on the mia-gig leg and cleared customs relatively without hassle. i decided to take the 7 real bus--this is highly recommended since a taxi now costs 40-45 real and was quoted as much as 70 real for a private driver. for those of you who dont know, there is a bus stand right after u clear customs--or go outside and the bus is right there.
i initially contacted ken but our schedules kept changing so i decided to reserve a double suite at the princess copacabana --wingman insisted he wanted an apt on atlantica so i left it up to him..huge mistake. he contacted john thompson (riorentals4less) and reserved a 2 bedroom beachfront apt for $165 dollars (down from $175 he wanted). i called him once we landed but he became restless waiting for the bus, so he in turn had us wait at terrazo atlantica restaurant in front of help and it went downhill from there...john explained to us that the apt we reserved was no longer avail and one of the rooms had no air (wtf!) but he has another apt around the corner..apt he showed us was crap so we declined it..he showed us another apt in the same building (much better) but insisted that we would have to leave at 10am on our last day!?!..so screw that..he proceeded to waste our time showing us one crappy apt after another until i got fed up at 3pm (rem the plane landed at 8:30am)..we went to bobby and in 30-40 mins we were in a three bedroom duplex for 500 reals a night..i have stayed in the building before and it has some real nice apts. it was a bit much but we were desperate and later i found that the actual price of the three bedroom is 450 reals a night. we used the third room for the festinahs. :)
apt is located in av atlantica 3916 (posto six), top floor penthouse with balcony overlooking atlantica, its a two level duplex with three bedroom, one of the bedrooms air didnt work as well and the furnishing were a bit worn to call it superluxury but it did look good..sorry no pics.

Take a genuine interest in Brasil for god sake. I am almost allergic to mongers whose sole purpose is mongering - nothing wrong with going to Rio solely for mongering, it's just me. But seriously consider having an experience of a lifetime that doesn't involve pussy. Brasil can change the way you think about the world.
