I am here now. Eu esta aqui.

Is there a way around this or can I just use any CPF online?I don't have a CPF but have gotten two sim cards, one Vivo and one TIM, activated by going to their store. I believe the person attending you uses their CPF or another customer's CPF. I know this because when I returned to Brazil I found I had lost access to my TIM account because I had not used it for a long time, since I had been out of the country for about 6 months, and they couldn't reactivate it since it was in the name of some woman. I chose to get a Vivo chip instead because they had a better plan but the Vivo store couldn't sell me a chip. They told me to go to a newsstand to get one and then they activated it, all without a CPF (although I think they may have made a copy of my passport). I think the guy that activated it used his CPF.

Because hotels clean and change the sheets everyday and sometimes they are even cheaper with more amenities. I have only used airbnb 2 or 3 times around the world. Seems okay at first, then they add that cleaning fee and service charge and I am like might as well just get a hotel.I hear ya. In my apartment or Airbnb experience I have daily cleaning (sometime with a charge and sometimes service is included) overall the Total Cost is always cheaper than Hotel. And the overall value proposition is better and amenities (I. E. , full kitchen, Large Balcony, Washer / dryer, living room space, depending on place a jacuzzi and or pool usually in penthouse, etc.) just an all around large spacious accommodations. Like in the US a Hotel Suite (I. E, Embassy Suites) is more spacious that your average hotel room event in the most expensive hotel. Anyway. Not trying to convince you,. Everyone has their preference Hotel vs. Apartment.
I will concede that there are cheap hotels that can be cheaper that an apartment or Airbnb, but not the class of hotels I would frequent.

A little info on airbnb. I started using airbnb in 2012. I am one on their oldest customers. I just checked my profile and I have used airbnb 42 times. Aprox 20 in RIO 10 in Argentina and the others in other SA countries and a hand full in europe. I always stay in an apartment and I have paid over $50.00 I think 3 times. With that said the last few trips and from now on I'm raising my limit to $60.00. I would say overall most of the apartments I have stayed in were 3.5 stars. A few were better some were not as good. I've had problems 3 times, once in Barranquilla My apartment turned out to be a hotel storage room with no windows and next to the parking garage. I didn't stay and rented a room at a local hotel for one night airbnb refunded my money minus their fee but gave me a coupon worth more that their fee. I will not bore you with the other problems I had but airbnb has good customer service. Pull up their internet site and study it for a minute. Its pretty much straight forward. A few hints. Like I said I always look for apartments, all have kitchens. I don't cook but I do like a refer and a microwave and a coffee pot. WIFI is a must. I have found that condo rentals and some hotels lease apartments to people that rent them out thru airbnb. If this is what you like look at their amenities and if they list a exercise room and or a pool this is a dead giveaway. When setting up a trip to RIO I try to set up my travel dates around the availability of rooms at the real residents hotel. (I'm not sure that's the right name) but apartments there are about $50.00 a night and it's worth it. I hope this helps.

I've stayed in Brazilian and South American condo buildings that could have been rental apartments being re-rented by the tenant on AirBnB. I never asked the desk guys. Things with AirBnB are very fluid. I just look for a decent price, decent accommodations and good reviews.
I'm certain on occasion that I have stayed in someone's personal apartment. They have checked me in and went off to stay with a friend nearby.

Yes I am mean apartments in Zona Sul (Copacabana, Ipanema and etc.). Even pre Airbnb an apartment rental provided a better value than Hotel in my opinion. I guess I'm curious as to what people pay for hotel rooms?
For example I put in a random date range of July 17-24 (7 nights) and hotels along Avenida Atlântica ranged from 81 to 123 per night, for a basic room and depending on property breakfast.
For 46 per night via Airbnb or rental apartment I could get and entire apartment: 1 block to beach between Arpoador and Ipanema, 1 BR, 1 BD, 1 BA, full Kitchen, Washer / Dryer, Microwave, Refrig, Wifi, living / Dining Room area, TV, Sofa Bed, Elevator access, Doorman / Security, iron, cable TV.

Its definitely a place where you have to keep your head on a swivel at night (Many of the drug dealers/ muggers were pushed out of their favelas and set up shop in caxias, it can very dangerous at night), but during the daytime you should be ok. You can get a room at one of the hotels near the bus station (Novo Hotel is a good spot) , invite the milfs over during the day and then at night you can take a 5 minute cab ride to the Rei De Bacalhau club.

I know this was discussed a while back ago but I didn't recall anyone recommending a safe and reliable ATM machine location (s) here in RJ?
I went to Barra Shopping yesterday for the first time. I did find two banks inside with ATM machines and several 24 horas ATM machines scattered around but none of them were guarded by security so they seemed too dangerous to me to use. I was quite disappointed since I thought Barra Shopping being a high end shopping mall would have better security. This is my first time bringing my ATM card to Brazil. I still have a bit of cash on me but eventually I will have to use my card to withdraw funds.
BTW, I found two locations in Sao Paulo where there are safe and reliable ATM machines. The first is in Shopping Ibirapuera in Moema. There are several Santander ATM machines one the first floor with a glass wall separating them from the bank itself. The glass makes the ATM machines totally visible to the guards. The second location is in Iguatemi Shopping. There are three 24 horas ATM machines but they are located in an obscure location. I had to actually asked the lady at the information desk where they were. After entering the mall, follow the large ramp that leads you down to the all the stores. There is a small corridor to the left of the ramp, follow it all the way down and the ATM machines are to the right in a little corner. Every time that I was there, there was a security guard guarding the area.

I have planned my retirement for awhile now. I am down to a 5 x 20 storage unit and a mail service to assist me. For some reason Latina girls really like me and I really like them. I'll be adding Club 114 and 116 onto my list of places to visit. I went to Uruguiana 210, Rua Alfandega 119, and Praca Olavo Bilac, 13 last night but being a Saturday night they were all pretty much dead. The few ones that were present were old hardcore pros.
VM itself is actually very safe. I have been there as late as 11 pm by myself. The dangerous part is getting to and from VM. If you go right before or a little after dark, its still pretty safe to take the public bus. But if you go there, say at 9 pm or later, its better to take uber. That's just my opinion from my limited experiences of VM.

For example I found it difficult trying to communicate with the cleaner and getting my laundry done etc but mainly whilst ordering food in restaurants as unfortunately I'm a very picky eater.
Do many of the restaurants in the tourist spots have staff who speak English. I'd love to learn Portuguese but I'm hopeless at picking up languages.

Went to 4 x 4 last night and it was packed with girls, about 2:1 girls to guys ratio. Someone mentioned in a previous post that he was disappointed with the talent level at 4 x 4. ISG is full of people that have made the journey 1000 times and in many cases live in the places that you are going. So where do you think you will get the best all-around information from? I live in Thailand and just recently someone posted about a company running a 6 month cell phone data plan for $60. What are the chances of having found out about that on TA? The info outside of mongering that I have gotten here and from guys that I have met here has many times literally shaped and changed my life.

Subway is very good in Rio de Janeiro. Copa583 is ok, they have good rooms, their rooms are very big but the girl quality is ok. I would say so so but sometimes you may find some stunners. I am more into termas and it's more relaxed. If you go to 583, always negociate the service before going to the room. Everybody is different, just try everything and stick to the kind of brothel you prefer.

Literally 20 minutes in Metro, not including walking to and from Metro station. Metro can be a pain in the ass during rush hour in am or pm. Taxi is great because it will always take you to the front door, which comes in handy when its raining or hot weather. Bus, you need to make sure you take the right one, and get dropped off on the right location.
Take baby steps, and figure out what's best for you. Good luck.

I'm about halfway through my research for my upcoming trip back to Rio. I try to read the last 50 pages on this site before each trip. I've read all of these post before but most pages seem new. And you didn't think a bad memory was useful. I found many posts about problems with taxi drivers. I have never experienced this scam here in Rio (well I don't think I have) but in Buenos Aires a common taxi scam Is for a unscrupulous taxi driver to take a color photo of a, lets say a 50 are note then make a small tear in the side and place in his lap. So as you pay him he looks at the 50 r note and study it and drops the note you gave him picks up the forgery and says I'm sorry sir this has a small tear in it so I can't except it. You apologize and trade for a different note. This is so common in Argentina that some locals say they always note the last 2 digits of the bill they give the driver. In all my travels most of my problems have been with taxi drivers. With that said many of my best and most memorable experiences have been with taxi drivers. I'm not going to bore you with any of my experiences but one of my best happen about 10-12 years ago and I reported on the Wasa Poland thread.
I keep reading were members think its terrible to carry cash in Rio or any foreign country. Personally, I have had so many problems in Brazil trying to use my visa debit card that I now carry cash to Rio then to my room and hopefully to a safe. From my previous trip I always arrive with about R2000. This will get me to my apartment and get me through a few days before I need to get to a cambio. I normally carry about 1500 r when I'm out and about. I don't carry my wallet or passport but I do always wear a t shirt that has a pocket. I put the balk of my money in my t shirt pocket then loose small bills in my shirt pocket. I'm sure there are many ways to protect your money but this works for me. Before my bank Visa was such a problem I would just bring my left over cash and plan on replenishing my walk around cash every few days from an ATM. Things change and you must adapt.

The normal procedure we use to advise Visa that a customer is traveling to Brazil no longer works. My bank must now call Visa and tell them that I am a good customer and I have been advised of the problems using my credit card in Brazil and that I will not use my card for everyday purchases but on bank ATMs then use cash for purchases. I understand the problem Visa is having with the corruption in Brazil but their banks and customers should be informed. So what do you think.

If someone is serious about buying then I suggest they contract an honest local lawyer (not so straightforward) and get to know a good realtor. Then familiarise yourself with Brazilian law. Your lawyer should find out if there are any unpaid charges on the property (eg: condominium fees) because when you buy you inherit all debts on the property.
I have heard horror stories over the years such as locals selling apartments they never actually owned with the help of dodgy lawyers. It is so much easier to rent. To buy overseas real estate you really need to know what you are doing.

On Monday nights we played volleyball on Leme Beach. Anybody remember Shelly and Bob (RIP) Anyway the last time I was in Rio was about 2 or 3 months before HELP closed and I have not been back since. I now want to take a nostalgic trip back to Rio but I am sure so many things have changed since the close of HELP. Everybody I knew has either passed away or I have lost touch with so when I go back again I will feel like a complete newbie tourist. The last time I went I stayed in the Green building a block up from HELP but that place may be no good anymore and the location could be far away from the action now. I think all the action is at the other end of the beach near Mabs now? I travel by myself and feel more comfortable in a hotel or a building similar to that Green building. It's for another day of the week too, but I don't recall which one. It's not consumable, drinks are extra. Decent ratio. OK line up.
