Oh, it's definitely just a personal taste thing. I just didn't feel the attachment I did to say Bangkok. Communication barriers are a little more pronounced in Rio, even in touristy areas, than say Bangkok as well, where really any venue that wants to do business with foreigners can speak at least the very basics. Rio, while being gorgeous, is also not as safe as I'd like, which prevented me from being willing to really explore on my own. I shouldn't have to feel like I have to "blend" to feel safer. First time in Rio and spent about a week there.

This trip I stayed in the hotel at Rua the Inhuama 95 on advice from JimmyBoy99, and on previous trips had a apartment near Uruguiana for 3 months (easy walk to 4 x 4 etc).

My guide was willing to take me to Lapa if I left my phone at home. This didn't fill me with confidence, and I had no need given the plethora of clinicas and termas in Copacabana. There's so much pussy in Copacabana and the price so low thanks to the exchange rate that the only time I left is to go to Sugerloaf and the Christ statue. The risk I would take to pay $10 instead of $20 dollars, for example, didn't seem worth it to me and the termas scene (while significantly more expensive) was more to my liking.
Only one local told me he knew places in Centro that would be 150 reals or less. I don't think he even meant brothels but bars with easy women.
Interestingly, my guide insisted favelas were much safer than any other place in Rio. He was going to take me to the Michael Jackson statue. In his view favelas had enough local gang enforcement that no one would touch a tourist because it would just draw attention. I have my doubts about this.

Violence in Rio is getting worse! 15 days ago, I had the same experience at Largo the Carioca, it was a Monday night, around 21:40, I was tired and heading towards the Menezes Cortes terminal to catch my bus and return home after a long working day. I stayed in Centro my last two trips (Close to the Carioca train station). During the daytime, Centro is awesome!! 5 minute walk from my hotel and I was viewing the lineup in my favorite prives. 10 minute walk to the termas. Many different choices for places to eat and beautiful women walking to work. That being said, at night time, things change. Whenever I left the termas between 10-11 PM, I always had my head on a swivel as I walked back to my hotel. The street lighting is very low and it is quite dark and deserted on many of the main roads. There were a number of streets where I could have very easily have been robbed and there would have been no witnesses! I don't recommend staying / walking around Centro at night alone, unless you know how to carry yourself and know what to look for.

Just got back from Brazil for the first time. Had a great trip and was able to visit with four of my friends. Did all the tourist stuff and of course the mongering activities as well. The trip was for two weeks and we traveled from Sao Paulo to Rio then to Floripa. All of us with the exception of one came back with Covid.
Be careful out there gentlemen. With the contact tracing it seems as though the first person on out group caught it the 2nd day that we were there. We wore the mask in public which is required, but around each other the mask were taken off and that is most likely how it has spread so fast amongst the group.
It was passed on to friends and family that we meet while visiting the cities. We all thought it was bullshit and the others were joking. We passed all the temperature checks at the restaurants, malls and airports.
Once getting back to the states we got tested just to make sure. All came back positive. I suffered the most since my covid turned to pneumonia. Others had lost their sense of smell and taste and the other was asymptomatic. I had to go to the hospital for pneumonia, bedrest for 8 days and lost 12 lbs from the ailment.
This virus spreads with continuous exposure to the virus. Be careful who you are around for long periods of time. Rio is a hotbed for the Covid virus.
Finally it is almost happening.
Next Monday will be in Rio.

When you connect to Uber on the airport WiFi, it'll tell you to go to the Departure level. You just choose the pickup point closest to you, and that's it.
The beaches: neither is clean, but Ipanema beach is cleaner, at least looked that way to me.
If the quality of water is important you might want to hop to Barra. Or, as a compromise try Leblon. I enjoyed the beach in front of Sheraton. It's shaped like a cove and even though it looks private, it's not. No young bundas though, there are very few people, mostly families and Sheraton guests. IIRC, there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel.

114 and 116 are both trash termas.
116 is better.
IMHO, the quality at 116 is probably going back down to pre covid levels.
