Hey guys, just wanted to give some reviews from my previous visit. I am a gringo, speak very very little Spanish, first timer to Costa Rica and was alone. This is just my take, and wanted to pass along some helpful information from my 3 days.
I Stayed in a hotel by the airport. (Not my choice, but paid for by work.) I got a rental car to get me to / from San Jose / volcanoes. Etc. Most the rental car places did a $600-$900 hold on your card FYI. So anybody who is short on funds might have a problem. Driving was fun! Watch out for motorcycles! Parking didn't seem to be a problem, most places in the downtown San Jose area are about 1,000 colones / hour. Some said 3,000/ day or 4,000/ night. For quick math I just did 1,000 colones = $2 USD. My favorite (minimal speaking) was on avenida 7 between calle 7 & 9. You walk up, he gives you a ticket with current time, when you come back, give him the ticket then pay. They are probably all like that but, it was close to new fantasy for me. After that I stuck with what I knew. The whole downtown area is pretty easy to walk.
I stuck to massage parlors. I wasn't staying downtown and didn't want to pay for a hotel. They seemed a little cheaper and were open earlier in the day, even mornings. Since google street view doesn't do San Jose, it is tough to find some of these places. I drove around quite a bit looking for certain ones. One way streets and traffic turned this into 2 hours!
First stop was New Fantasy. Avenida 9 between calle 7 & 9. There's a couple youtube videos that show what the outside looks like. You walk thru the gate, get wanded by the security guard then he let's you inside. Small area. Bar on the right and seating on the left, and double doors straight ahead. (These are where the rooms are) Get a drink, sit down, and check out the ladies. I was confused if there was more back there like a better lineup or something because I thought you get a lady and head back to your room, but then I would see guys walk through without ladies. Turns out, the bathroom is back there to the right. Help yourself. Anyways, I made eye contact with a lady and told her vamonos! Asked for her name several times, didn't understand. "Honey" was the only thing I understood. In the room, she said $50 for the hour and I didn't understand what the half hour was. If you want half hour. Say media. No español =1 hour sold! Then she up-sells a BBBJ for $20. We agree on $15. More than I wanted to spend but her tits were already out. Most enthusiastic 5 min BBBJ ensued. Meh. On goes the rubber. Very enthusiatic. As we were finished and getting dressed, she heard her friend outside the door, opens it and they talk and laugh hysterically. Her friend and her guy walk by the door and see me butt ass naked. Thanks "honey" real fucking nice of you. Terrible etiquette. I know it's busy and you sometimes see other clients, but there's no need to have the door full open while I'm changing. Needless to say, no tip. Hope others have better experiences.
Next day I hit up krysis health spa around noontime. It's on avenida 7 between calle 2 & calle central Alfredo volio. Small white sign above the entry. Walk under the sign up some stairs to a buzzer. Mamasan buzzes you in quickly. Walk in and to the right is a where about 4-5 girls were. I asked for beer she said no only ticas. I said media this time! 15,000 colones was the quote. Gave her 20,000 thinking, shit there goes an extra 5,000. She motions to pick one out. Most girls were about 5-6 at best. I look around and not one girl smiled. I'm in shape, somewhat young and good looking. I look around for eye contact and I am starting to think I should just pick the one who would be absolutely annoyed by me picking her. Not a lot of foot traffic on that street, and I was scared being solo, that somebody would follow me on my way out.
Anymore questions or requests for clarification are welcomed. I still prefer Bangkok scene as the girls seem more fun and flirty there. But the ticas are just way better looking. Hope this helps somebody.

If you are still in SJ, go to Relax and 360 MP. Former in city near Delray, latter in sorta suburbs, Paseo Colon. Fantastic quality. No upsell. Lot of variety to choose from.
Can't compare CR to Thailand, nothing compares to Thailand. But eye candy quality is higher in CR.
Don't forget to spend all your evening in Delray.

What is the nicer / more quiet section of the Sportsmens Lodge? In case it's booked up does anyone have a suggestion for a higher end hotel that is also chica friendly? I like the Sleep Inn but the chica fee is too much. Does anyone know about the chica fee and room quality at the Mona Lisa? The old set up at the Presidente was perfect but you can't go home again.
Thanks in advance to all who respond.For Sportsmans, you can basically say the higher the price, the nicer the rooms, and the loud ones near the bar are the lowest priced. There is no chica fee at Mona Lisa and while I would not call it "high end," it is a better deal from a pure hotel standpoint than Sportsman's. Everybody should spend about five days at the Sportsman one time, but it's not exactly a top value. At Mona Lisa, you are very near VIPs and Scores and Zona II whereas at Sportsman's you are a bit farther afield.
Just got back from my first foray to San Jose and I must say. WOW.
Stayed at La Amistad on $99/ day room and all-inclusive with meals and drinks included. Not bad. Hotel was clean. Chow was pretty darn good. And the staff is friendly and helpful. Bit further from the downtown actions at Hotel Del Rey but the taxis are ridiculously cheap. Rooms are spartan but serviceable. I wish they'd replace the bath towels which are a bit dated but hey. We can't have it all. Met alot of other good mongers there, and we traded advice and stories.
First day stopped in at New Fantasy MP for some afternoon delight. Grabbed a few Costa Rican beers, mingled with the gringos at the bar and laid eyes on a cute black-haired chic. Amy?. Did a half hour session for $35.I hear the chico rates are almost half that. So a lot of chicos are crowding that bar. But the session with the girl was solid and I moved on.
That night walked a block from Amistad to Sportsmans Lodge, picked up a cute sassy local girl (7 on the rating scale) and went dancing downtown for two hours before we returned for an hour of fun for $80. Okay, I will amend my advice: Do not negotiate in dollars unless you are too fucking stupid to do eighth grade math.
But really, my advice is sound and applies world-wide. You will get better pricing and treatment if you negotiate in the local currency, preferably using the local language. And learning a currency conversion is rumored to be easier than learning an entire language.
Once a chica gets the concept of dollars in her mind, you are wealthy in her mind from that point forward, regardless of your actual economic situation. I just got back from about 8 days and little has changed, but there were a few. It's definitely the rainy season, with heavy rain and thunderstorms almost every afternoon and into the evening. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday still seem to be the best nights at the DR, with quite a few new choices. I didn't see very many Columbianas this time.
I think that La Princesa Marina still has the best fresh sea bass or snapper, (depending on the season), but the price of fuel makes the taxi ride a hit / miss. My bud and I made two trips out there. The first taxi took some short cuts and beat all of the traffic on the way out, so we asked him to come back. HE took the long way back and got stuck in traffic, so we decided to walk the last six blocks. On hte next trip, the other taxi did the exact same thing, so we decided to walk the last four blocks back to hotel. HE was more accommodating and dropped his price to 3200 c, which is what we paid him going.
We stopped by the DR on Saturday and police were everywhere. . . At least six different kinds of vehicles. It seems that one of the waitresses may have knifed someone who owed her money.
On Wednesday, the new owners of the Morazan stopped the lunch buffet until further notice, because it wasn't selling. Also, w/free breakfast, they have changed to some acidic orange juice, with a bitter after taste. It happens when juice is made from certain whole oranges. The appetizer menu is good and I enjoyed the quesadillas. They haven't changed anything in the rooms and some still have the 4:3 televisions. We are accustomed to the owners saying Hello, when they see you, but not these guys. I am surprised that they are in the people business. I imagine that they will test raising room rates to try and pay for any changes. The place never seems fully rented, it just seems some of the rooms can't be rented because of the bad bathroom odors.
Forgot to mention that if noise bothers you, then you won't like Morazan. Both the inside and outside rooms have the pounding music from Key Largo at night. The outside rooms have street noise from 5:30 a.m. until 1:30 a.m. and they seem to always have some construction/repair in the hotel. Also, a little towel on the headboard would keep some of the late night noise down. (Smile)
All in all, it was good trip, but we did scope out a couple of hotels, if Morazan becomes an issue.

I have stayed there many, many times and I stopped in to say Hello, to Ricardo a few weeks ago, he has worked there for at least the last 10 years and he told me the new owners are Colombian. BTW the daytime receptionist is an absolute stunner! In fact I would stay there just to have more time to work her, you never know in CR.L. L. , I'll stop by there next week and get the scoop. They might be from Colombia I was told Venezuela. Not much of a difference. Hopefully, the changes will be positive.

I was happening a few months ago. The Mona Lisa fired 3 staff members and made the necessary changes. A security guard, a front desk clerk and I believe the night auditor. No more problems since they let them go and hired new night time personnel.

I am a permanent resident of Costa Rica for 10 years now. Christmas and New Years are the same as the states. Especially new years. Ticos don't all go home and it becomes a so-called ghost town. Nothing can be further from the truth. There are people just like in the USA That come out on the holidays. Just as people eat, sleep and want to find fun for the holidays. So do the ticos. If you tried to book a flight to anywhere in Costa Rica for a vacation from Christmas day through the holidays, many, many many, will be completely booked up. Don't believe me, just do a simple check on the web and choose staying in San Jose. Before I became a permanent resident of Costa Rica, I came Christmas day (and I came on Christmas day) LOL! MrHC asked about that, and several of us advised him not to do it. Not because there is absolute zero chance of getting laid then. It's a pretty cool place, always clean, the rooms are nice and the ladies are above average. Some are stunners on the 2nd shift. I think they are still doing the lesbian show on Friday nights. You must check both places out along with the Sportsmen, Zona II, Scores, New Fantasy and the Mona Lisa. Don't forget the Cocal in Jaco on your trip. A must see, especially in Feb.

The rooms were almost full but that was a busy week right before Christmas. I heard they had a tough November. Their strategy of filling up the rooms at a low rate is probably not the best. Report: So, I decided to get out and have some fun in the "ghost town" that a member that sits behind a computer bopping and it was great! We booked a 4 bedroom condo, 4-5 blocks from Cocal for $800 total, and we booked in August. Guys were trying to get down to Jaco and couldn't find much. One guy found the smallest room at Cocal and it was $150 per night, plus taxes, minimum 3 nights. However if you want to stay in San Jose, finding a room won't be a problem.

I got recommend the Pirate Bar for any first timers or those not familiar with the lay of the land. I got to check it out yesterday and it's your best bang for your buck. Decent little pharmacy one minute up the street across the RR tracks to next corner on the left sold me generic V for $2. 50 a pill as I cleaned out his stock and asked for a deal. Good news here: LA hires crossing guards to hold traffic signs till about 10 AM and this silences the early morning train horn so you can actually sleep now. The guards store their signs inside LA and I watched them some mornings put their shit away in the office while eating breakfast. Note: The LA restaurant closes from 10-noon every day so if you're a late sleeper you'll need to wait till noon to eat. Rest. closes at 9 PM and bar stays open somewhere between 11 PM and midnight depending on guest traffic though I think they're supposed to close at 11. BIG shout out to bartender, "Jenny. " She's a workaholic and never stops moving. Serves as bartender, waitress, bus boy, you name it. Though, at times she could have used a little help. Tip generously guys. Jaco was freaking awesome! Much better than San Jose in my opinion, temperature was warmer, felt more like a vacation. Only downside was the lack of venues, Cocal being the only real option early. Returned to CR in October '14 after years of travel to numerous other South and Central American countries. SOOO to answer your question. Yes HDR is Hotel Del Rey. If you are fresh on the scene its a nice start to get familiar and meet some people that are in the game. From there they will tell you their favorite spots and you can get enough info to keep you busy

Off to San Jose after four nights in Jaco.
Monday-- up early to the San Jose airport to drop off one of our group who was heading home. We continue over to the Poas volcano-- clouded in -- could not see anything. Then over to the La Paz waterfalls-- really worth it. Lots of walking through some wonderful exhibits-- birds, frogs, snakes, big cats, butterflies and of course the waterfalls. Recommended.
Arrived downtown San Jose about 4:00 -- staying at La Amistad hotel--great location and reasonably priced rooms. Only negative-the trains that go right by the hotel. They stop running about 8:00 pm but resume at 5:15 AM.
About a block away from Amistad is the Sportsmen's Lodge. Nice sports bar. Decided to try dinner there at 7:00 pm. Food sucked and very few chicas-- this was a Monday. But -OMG this gorgeous mullata Nica was sitting at the bar. Sat next to her-- very little English-- but my Spanish is passable-and Google Translate really helped. Beautiful, tall, light brown skin, beautiful legs and an incredible smile. 20 years old-- just arrived from Managua four days before. Sounds like bullshit to me. But, almost any robbery is a "setup" of some sort, especially if you are a foreigner, and twice as especially if you are in Latin America. I've been to this place half a dozen times and I think the guy running the place has more sense than to be robbing customers.
To answer my own question a few posts back, yes, there are short term hotels down in the Gulch. For 3 hours you'll pay anywhere from $10 - 25 US. One I can recommend is called "the office" with your standard room for about $12 or the upgrade with a jacuzzi for $18. While the water was filling up the large tub, I got a nice little massage.

Off to San Jose after four nights in Jaco.
We had a van and driver for transport--that was arranged through Sid at One Lucky Dog tours--a good guy who was very helpful. We paid $110 from the airport to Jaco. Not bad when you split it between several guys. PS999, way to finish up your report. Looks like you guys had a wonderful time. To some $2,500 might seem like a lot of money. To others having a luxury condo, private driver, tours, good dining and your P4 P, it's a great deal when compare to the airfares and time traveling to Asia. Glad we could save you some money. See you next time.

Arrived in SJ today after a five hour bus ride from Coco Beach (Pacific Side).
Grabbed a taxi at the bus station and told him to take me to The Freebird hotel, Calle 11. He didn't know where it was, and my first time in SJ, so I told him to let me out at Hotel Del Ray. Went to a bakery, grabbed a cup of coffee and pulled up Google Maps and discovered that I was only a five minute walk from Freebird.
Checked in and committed to the $99, three day special. Showered and headed for Monica's, only four girls on duty but I was ready, so I chose a 21 year old 'student. '.
Friendly girl and good English, good BJ, but with condom, then on to the main event. After wards she gave me a good massage and we showered together. $40, one hour.
On the way back I checked out Hotel Del Ray. Many girls there, some hot, many not, but several stopped by to ask if I needed company.

Sounds like some dude that was corned for whatever reason. Cuba Dave's Blog say's he thinks it is one of the safer pension's in San Jose.
11 hours is less time then it seems, between airport transfers and the fact that SJO can get really crowded and take a while to get both in and out.
However, many Latin Airlines like Copa or TAM / LAN will (or at least used to) let you extend your layover a day or so for no charge. Might be worth a phone call.

OK, a little late to post, but WTF. Had a fantastic trip in December. This was my second trip to CR, and wanted to explore a bit. I decided to rent a car for the week. Got a Bego 4 WD from Alamo at the airport (through their website). Great price, but be prepared for the hard sell on insurance, etc. Bring printed proof of CDW from your credit card and just politely say no thanks to every offer of insurance and GPS. Say you understand, blah blah. Take pictures of the vehicle from every side. After reading so many stories I was just prepared for the worst. Another tip is to give the guy that checks your vehicle back in at the end any loose change and bills you have left over. 7 dollar tip saved me 50! All good and decent ride.
So, stayed at the Amistad for a few nights. Loved it, and had the all inclusive, so a great deal. Beautiful place and an easy walk to wherever nearby. Met lots of good people there. Little sketchy at night walking to Del Ray with the trannies, but had no problem. Took cabs back with the girls though. Bed frames are EVIL. Still have the scar on my shin from hitting it twice. But great breakfast and will definitely be back. Liked it a little better than the Sportsman. Made the mistake of parking in the lot a half a block down. With my non-existent Spanish, I thought it was a few dollars a day, but turns out to be 24 $ a day. That sucked. So had a LAME ass girl from DR that promised the world and delivered nothing. Rule: stay away from anyone promising everything. I should know better (Then had a super shy, super cute girl that made the whole trip! Wow, just that good in every way. I'll spare the details. Also had a great girl from one of the massage places. The one next to the place that just closed. Can't remember the name. Paid the extra for the "extras". Nice its available, sucks its always an upsell. Oh well, guaranteed BBJCIM, so well worth it.
After some awesome days in SJ, I took off to Monte Verde for some tourist stuff. 4-5 hour drive up a road that turned into a dirt road. 4 WD was a very good thing! Spent a few days in Monte Verde, and enjoyed myself. Amazing zip line at Aventura, ATV tours, night time nature walks, and day time hiking. Great little bar that serves home brews and some snacks. Overall, a nice few days if you are into the adventure / nature things.
After a few days, headed to the beach area of Jaco. Its a huge beach area, but only really one place in town that caters to my needs (Cocal was booked up, so stayed across the street. Complete shit hole, so stay away. Name started with an X or Z or something, who knows. Next night went to the Copacabana Hotel which was great. Highly recommend. Had a different girl each night. All very good, but nothing to write home about. I liked the Cocal overall and will return. Liked the beach area too. Took a day trip to Manuel Antonio and enjoyed a great day there.
Last day day headed back to the airport, only got lost once. Will return in a few weeks now that SouthWest flies direct. Can't wait!! Hope that one girl from SJ is still around!

We visited almost every Pension in the city and Monica's was the ONLY one that was open. There were only 3 girls in HDR. The only place that had any action at all was Sportsman, at around 9:00 pm There were quite a few girls there, considering the Holy Week Holiday.
My advice is if you don't have regulars that you know will be around, do not go to Costa Rica during Semana Santa, I met several guys on their first trip that were not pleased with San Jose. I knew it was Semana Santa when I booked, and the holiday did not really affect me, I enjoyed walking around / driving around the empty streets. Learning where all the Pension's are. Even if most of them were not open.

Used O. L. the. To pick me up from SJO and it was well worth it. Price is $30 US which is a little more than a local taxi, which is $25, but there are several advantages. First, if he has someone else coming in you can split the fair, which reduced my cost from $30 to $15. I never would have known the other guy that O.L.D. was picking up so I was saving money already. Secondly, and more important, even if it would have been well worth it. You know you have someone picking you up instead of relying solely on whatever cab driver is around. I had been to SJO several times, but if you haven't he can & will show you where to exchange money into Colones (if you want. I don't), plus you can pay your departure tax before you leave the airport. You will greatly appreciate it. O. L. The will also have a nice cold Imperial waiting for you, for the trip downtown. He is very knowledgeable about SJO, and can answer any questions you might have about San Jose or Costa Rica. I was greatly impressed and will defiantly utilize him for all my travel in the future!

I completely agree with your assessment of the Sportsmen's lodge. It is the most over hyped venue on the internet. The food and food service suck. The talent is second rate and the rooms are severely overpriced. Basically a waste of time and money. I have found some great times in Costa Rica, and you can find much better deals than are available in HDR or Sportsman. You just have to know where to look.
I really like the Pensions, where you can find the prices for $25 to $50.
Is Scores still open. It was originally Hotel Little Havana, but downsized and split into two bars. Had a few rooms and a nice bar with big screen TV's. Haven't been there in about a year and was thinking of returning.

Snook.Hotel Little Havana morphed into different bars. Scores and Zona II. Scores is now closed, rumors are it has been bought, and is being refurbished. But they may or may not have a liquor license because there was only 1 for both places and the owner or Zona II owns it. Zona II is still open and running. Basically the exact same business model as Scores. Just executed better.

As a random note of history, Hotel Little Havana started its life as Zona Blue. My first time there was in 2014, and it was fantastic.

Their cheapest room is $94.00 + Taxes per night, but that includes all you can eat & drink, if you stay more than 4 nights free ride to the airport, and a host of other services.

I have friends that swear by the Freebird, cheapest room is $42.00-$53.00 + tax, depending if you are eligible for a discount. I have never stayed there, Deluxe Queen Rooms (the ones that cost $42.00-$53.00 + tax) doesn't have a private bathroom, (the 2 rooms with a private bath are around $75.00 + Taxes). You have to share 2 bathrooms, with 5 rooms, & both bathrooms are on the bottom floor. A private bathroom is an absolute deal breaker to me. Too much like a hostel for my tastes, I am too old to be staying at a hostel. To each his own.
Del Rey doesn't publish their rates, I've heard stories of people getting rates as low as 69.00 + Taxes, but I have never been quoted a rate that low, I think they told me their cheapest room was 99.00 + Taxes. They also charge $11.00 ish everytime you take a girl upstairs. FUCK THAT!
The Sportsman Lodge's cheapest room is $65.00 per night, I believe they have only a single room at that rate and it is NEVER available. Most of their rooms run $100+.
O.L.D. has a discount card for something like $30.00, that will get you a discount at some of the Monger friendly hotels in San Jose, I am sure if you PM he would tell you the actual cost (I can't remember for sure what he told me it was) and the Hotels that will give a discount with it.

It was absolutely terrible: the eggs were cold and not mixed well at all so there were pieces of yellow and pieces of white. The "hash browns" were some deep fried patty that had been overseasoned with onion salt or garlic salt or some fucken thing. The juice lagged well behind and the "toast," which was not even minimally singed, lagged behind that even further. I would have sent it back if I had not been under the distinct impression it was free. So, I finished up and went up to my room. Soon a knock came on the door, at which time I was on the toilet. I called out "ocupado. " Immediately the phone rang. "Sir, you need to come pay for your breakfast. " I went downstairs to discuss this. I stated that I had been told in no uncertain terms that breakfast was included. "A continental breakfast is included with fruit and (I forget what). " I stated that I had seen no buffet, the word "continental" was never used, and that they had brought me a menu. The waitress said she thought I had come from outside the hotel. I stated that was not my fault and that I was not going to pay (I left out the fact the breakfast was horrible, but that would have been my next statement). The waitress said it was her fault and it was okay.
I deemed that to be a bad omen so I read the stuff from the mini bar and it stated there were non alcoholic drinks as well as alcoholic drinks, and among the items listed was peanuts. There were no peanuts and the refrigerator was completely empty when I arrived (just the way I like it, actually). I went down to the desk again to discuss all of this and was again told, fine, no problem. We will see what happens when I check out but it was instructive and from now on I am going to make it a policy to inventory the mini bar in the presence of an employee immediately upon check in, anywhere I stay.

It is a corner room but only one side has windows that open. They open up and out and there is no way to lock them open and they just gradually shut themselves. There is a ceiling fan but the situation with the windows diminishes its effectivenesss considerably. The water in the shower is lukewarm and there is not much pressure.
On the plus side (in addition to the chica policy), the wifi signal is strong in the room and in the restaurant, they offer free local phone calls, and free printing. This latter could be quite useful. They make you a little identification card out of your passport, which is a nice touch. An additional minus is that the flat screen TV picture is oddly distorted and blurry. So, overall I am not impressed, but I don't know that there are any better chica-friendly options in this price range. I have never stayed at La Amistad because I read that you cannot bring in outside chicas. That may no longer be true.

There is NO problem bringing chicas into La Amistad, as many as you want, for as long as you want. No fee. EVER. They simply take her ID when she enters, give it back when she leaves.

I tend to favor La Amistad, even though they are not perfect, they offer the best value. Their cheapest room is $94.00 + Taxes per night, but that includes all you can eat & drink, if you stay more than 4 nights free ride to the airport, and a host of other services.

To give credit where credit is due, the continental breakfast that is included in the room price is quite good. A full plate of fruit (bananas, papaya, pineapple, and watermelon), seriously underdone toast with a thing of jelly and a thing of margarine (yuck), a slice of ham and a thick slice of some salty cheese I could not eat, about an 8 oz glass of orange juice, and as much coffee as you want.
Calle 3 between Avenidas 7 and 9. When I lived here last year it was just a cheap place to drink. The owner is Canadian, had just bought the place, and was quite rightly feeling his way around and getting to know the system. Now it is still a cheap place to drink but the bartenders show you their tits and get up on the bar and dance topless and things of this nature. Also last year he was deciding what he wanted to do with the rooms and now he is renting them out by the hour as he bought one of the few remaining licenses to do that. The hookers in there are nothing to really write home about and they move between Malibu and Bar Poa on Avenida 7. But, it attracts a nice mix of ticos and extranjeros and to my way of thinking is a hell of a good time. Some younger talent walks in from time to time and it is fun to pay 1.000 colones for a beer and then stick another 1.000 colones down the barmaid's bra and see how low you can go. Tonight I asked one of the barmaids if I could stick a 1.000 colones tip down her bra and she said that could be an issue since she was not wearing one and lifted up her top to verify that. I had the bill in my hand and did not know quite what to do so I tickled her nipple with it and she giggled.
Dirty deeds done dirt cheap in this place. Check it out.

I met this girl a few years ago in san jose. Has anyone seen her or know where she has been? I can't quite remember her name either. It may come to me. Any help would be nice. She was very nice and fun but I lost touch and have not seen or heard from her since.
I have stayed at the Dunn Inn several times and by far the best deal in hotels all around. Clean rooms, the food in the restaurant is very good. I have left money out on my desk in my room and it never disappeared. Also walking distance to several "massage" places and to DR and SL. But I am lazy so I take a cab. Less than $3. Very chica friendly. I highly recommend it. Room #3 has a balcony.

I personally thought the food at the Dunn Inn was absolutely terrible, and I was a professional cook for many years. Also, a pair of guests got sick off the food while I was there. Not samonella sick but enough to ruin their day.
Location is indeed good and the chica policy is just right, taking and keeping the identification but no further nonsense. I was only there for three days and kept the Do Not Disturb sign on the whole time, so cannot speak to the cleanliness of the rooms. However, the breakfast room is not at all clean and the same dirty tablecloths were presented day after day.

First time poster here but I have gotten such valuable info from this site for many years I figured it was time to give back.
My buddy and I have been mongering around the Caribbean for the last 10 years. We are both married but find a way to "sneak away" from the wives and kids for a few days each year, and tuck money away all year long to save up for the trips. As such, we need destinations that are "quick hops" from Miami (no Thailand or Germany trips just yet) and usually travel for 3-4 nights max. To date, we have been to Costa Rica twice, St. Martin twice, Panama, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Curaao and Aruba all once. I'll try and give brief highlights of each destination as we experienced it.
First, I wouldn't have any reservations about traveling to any of these destinations solo, but it's definitely safer, better, and generally more fun to go with a friend. If you can travel with a wing man (that also enjoys mongering) it's highly recommended, but I would prefer to go solo than with a friend who didn't partake in the hobby. My friend speaks Spanish and I have a good foundation of the basics, so this helps a lot as well.
Each destination has it's pros and cons, and you might like different destinations based on your mongering preference. My buddy and I both like to fuck as many chicks as our dicks can handle. With wives back home, GFE and hanging out with the same girl for a complete trip is not our thing. (I think single guys like the GFE a bit more.) We want 3-4 girls a day each, (we have a competition each trip who can bang the most chicks) and we like to party hard. FYI, mixing large amounts of alcohol, Viagra, and blow is not recommended, but damn it sure is fun! I'm straight as a narrow 361 days a year, so this is my way of getting it out of my system. Women would never understand this, but I genuinely believe these trips have saved my marriage. I always come back with a greater appreciation for my wife and kids, and stop wondering about the greener grass on the other side. When I start to get agitated and wishing I was single again, I know it's time to make a trip. Anyway. Let's get to it.
Costa Rica. Still my ATF, stayed at Del Rey both times. Yes it's a bit of a clip joint and Sportsman, Amistad, etc. Are better value hotels that are Chica friendly, but we like to stay in the heart of the action. What I love about Costa Rica and Del Rey in particular, is it's 24/7 action! 9 am, 3 pm, 4 am, you have a huge selection at any hour of the day. Also, Del Rey has the most options if you want a quickie in the morning, a 2-3 hour party in the evening or a TLN, where other destinations are not as versatile. It's nice to venture out of the hotel to some of the Brothels during the day, but sometimes it's hard to walk out the front door of Del Rey. It just sucks you in and you can't leave!. If you make it though, it's worth it. Little Havana and others are a much better value with nice chicas, but Idem was my favorite outside of Del Rey. Costa Ricas downfall IMO, is the cost. It's a more expensive destination than others listed below. Del Rey chicas want US $100 which can be negotiated down, (not to mention Chica fees, inflated bar tabs, condom and security "tips" at Del Rey) but for the girls, it's a careful balance of getting a better price without a shittier experience. Outside Del Rey prices are cut in half. Overall if money is no object, it's my number one choice. BTW, get your own hotel room for this destination.
St. Maarten. We hit this place back to back a few years ago, and it's a great destination for our needs. Carolina's and Seamans were the go to joints, but we hit Casa Blanca and a few others also. $50 plus $5-6 for the room for a half hour. Rental car is recommended here. TLN and taking the girls out of the clubs are possible but too expensive for our needs, and we share a hotel room to save cash. Generally here you hit the clubs in the evening (not a 24/7 destination as the girls sleep most of the day unless cruise ships are in) and you take the girls to the rooms in the back. 1/2 hour is the standard and you can do an hour, but rarely anything more in house. Good selection and pricing is great, but when you hit as many different chicas as my friend and I do, Chica politics starts to creep in, and we developed quite a reputation by the end of our trip. Last night at Carolina's I was sitting at the bar and looked around, and I had fucked every girl in the room. When the girls see you back and forth at the same pace as them, they start to get pissed. Don't know why.
DR (Santo Domingo) - we only had 3 nights here and couldn't get a straight flight to Sosua from Miami, and didn't want to waste the extra time going back and forth, so we stayed in the city. Can't remember the name of the hotel, it was Chica friendly but we had problems with more than 1 Chica at a time. 4-5 different brothels in walking distance but no rooms on site at any of them, it was takeout only. Based on this, girls generally wanted $150 for 2 hours, and to me this place was more of a GFE / TLN kind of place. For our tastes, it wasn't what we like but still had a blast and the girls was much prettier than I expected. (I prefer whiter girls and was expecting darker complexion but had no problems finding a knockout each time.) it's not top of my list for a repeat but I would go back.
Panama City. Tied with Cuba as the least favorite of all our trips. Stayed at Veneto. Girls are only available for a few hours in the evenings, and they will NOT approach you, so you better grab the one you want and fast. Generally they want to spend a few hours to all night with you ($150 starting price). One night we went to Little Havana club and when we arrived, only 2-3 girls were there. Within an hour, the place was crawling with over 100 girls, wall to wall, holy shit! Tried to hang out and approach multiple girls to get a chemistry going, but within 2 hours the place was empty and went back to the hotel empty handed. By then, I had missed the window with girls at the Veneto casino, and waited till 4 am before I could grab one. Jeez. There were a few brothels / massage parlors in the area but very low number of girls working and 3-4 looks on average. We took a taxi to a local brothel in the area the last night (Caribbean Club I think) and had a good night there, but overall I would not repeat. If TLN is your thing though, you might like it.
Cuba. Not a very note worthy mongering destination IMO, although we went here with other friends 10 years ago so things may have changed. Prostitution is illegal, and you can't take girls into the hotels, so my friends and I rented a house about 45 minutes outside Havana. There was a disco tech in walking distance and gringos won't have a problem picking up girls, but keep in mind, they are not technically working girls, but are going with you for the cash. ($30 is a months salary over there.) TLN is the only thing on the menu really, and the friends we were with had been before and already had girlfriends from the previous trip. They ended up setting me up with one of their friends half way through the trip, so I stayed with her for the remainder. Yawn. Things may have changed since then, but I doubt it.
Curaao. Campo Alegre is by far the best value dollar for dollar we have found to date. Air fare is the cheapest of all destinations from Miami, we stayed at Venetia (next to the Denny's) for under $100 a night, and banging Colombians for $30 a pop is unbeatable. Every girl I was with from the spinners to the 6-8's offered GFE, all have "party favorites" and you can easily spend 1/2 hour to 2-3 hours with whoever you want, have 3-somes, he'll my buddy and I partied for 3-4 hours with 5 chicks one evening, fucked everyone of them, and each had one more before leaving that night. I think we spent $500 that night for the two of us, and we weren't haggling or watching the bank either, that if unbeatable! Girls range from 2-3 to 8-9 in looks and while I am always tempted to only hit "top shelf" girls each trip, I find the 6-8 girls are the best performers and most memorable experiences.
Chica politics is slightly higher than say DR or CR, but way less than St. Martin which has smaller clubs like Carolina's. I only had an issue with one Chica at Campo, and it's so big and wide open you can hang in different spots if you need to avoid a Chica. Girls will do daytime takeout at reasonable prices although I did not partake, and my biggest criticism of the club is it's outdoors and can get very hot and humid, but girls rooms are AC and have showers when needed. Overall it's a safe atmosphere and you can party hard, although you do have to drive back to your hotel afterwards (rental car highly recommended) but we found it easy enough to navigate and never got lost. We are heading back there next week (20 May) for 3 nights, and we can't wait.
Aruba. We hit Aruba for only one night after Curaao, and we had stayed up all night at Campo before leaving, so our energy was down. Rental car is highly recommended and there are no close hotels to San Nicholas so you have to drive 30 minutes on average. We did the "drive through" experience in the day time and hit a few of the clubs that night, hanging at each one for a drink and hitting whatever chicas caught our attention. Overall it was fun but I wouldn't consider Aruba a true "mongering destination" rather a good tourist destination that also has mongering. I wanted to try the escort service when we got back to the hotel as I read the girls are good quality, fast delivery and overall good service, but we were spent by that time.
Overall I would say Costa Rica is the best for sheer number of girls, variety of cultures and quality, and 24/7 action, but it's downfall is the expense. St. Martin is a lot of fun and suites our style and budget for many chicas in a short time, but honestly after discovering Campo, I just think it's better overall. Cheaper pricing, quality is just as good IMO, and it's easier to party with them at Campo versus St. Martin clubs that are highly geared to short sessions only. Aruba would be good if you want a nice Caribbean vacation and bang a Chica or two when you are there (either escort of San Nicholas) but not a hardcore destination. Cuba and Panama were a waste of time for pure mongering.
Sosua sounds amazing from the threads, as does Columbia but travel time and expense (plus safety) has held us back from these areas, although they are definitely on our "to do" list. As of now, if you haven't experienced CR, St. Martin or Curaao, they are all worth visiting but as of right now, Curaao looks to be our "go to" destination moving forward.

Real good report and pretty much spot on. The only think I might add is, there's no Hotel Little Havana, it's been the Zona II now for a couple of years. Also, the trend is moving to the beach in Jaco where the Cocal is now the new king of the sure numbers of the finest ladies in Costa Rica. Thanks for the report. Great job. Come see us again soon.

The new owners took possession on the 1st of May and changes have begun. The Tommy's restaurant is being redesigned and is suppose to open on the 1st of June. All the old lobby furniture is gone, so is the poker room, casino and sports bar. A total remodel downstairs. A new and much improved wi-fi system is going in and new safety deposit boxes. The bar and hotel remain open and so does their $39.95 a night rate.

I have been reading the CR posts and getting interesting in doing my first trip to CR. I am thinking about a trip to CR in the end of the summer or beginning the Fall 2015. Here is so far what I gathered and would like some clarifications or have some questions for the experienced mongers out there.
1) Hotel Del Rey, a great option for a newbie in CR like me. DelRey is ground Zero for p4 p action. I see the price for a single room through tripadvisor or booking.com quoting $120 per night http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g309293-d301474-Reviews-s1-Hotel_Del_Rey-San_Jose_San_Jose_Metro_Province_of_San_Jose.html. Does the Del Ray has the option of hanging out in there / bar without you being a guess? Do they have short term 2 hours rooms for you to pick a girl while you hanging out in there? If so how much do they charge for a short term room?

4) Scores? What happened to the Hotel Scores? Another mongering hotel with girls. Is it opened, closed, will it opened? This had the best value for the price under 50 USD rooms according to previous reports.
5) Any other mongering hotel with chicas / ticas in there beside Hotel DelRey, Sportsman, Zona2, Scores?
6) Any recommended low end, middle or high end MPs for the day action in San Jose?
7) I saw a Cubadave video http://www.cubadave.com/2015/04/cuba-dave-trapped-costa-rica/ where he is providing some tips. In one of the tips, he recommends that whenmaking a deal with a girl not to rent the rooms and to let the girls rent the rooms instead. I would like some clarification on this? Is that tip for the Delray, Sportmans, Zona2?

I have been reading the CR posts and getting interesting in doing my first trip to CR. I am thinking about a trip to CR in the end of the summer or beginning the Fall 2015. Here is so far what I gathered and would like some clarifications or have some questions for the experienced mongers out there.
1) Hotel Del Rey, a great option for a newbie in CR like me. DelRey is ground Zero for p4 p action. (Yes it is. However, chicas have the perception that every guest is rich and will all spend cien, regardless of the chicas' qualifications. Interview and negotiate.)
Does the Del Ray has the option of hanging out in there / bar without you being a guest? (yes)
Do they have short term 2 hours rooms for you to pick a girl while you hanging out in there? (no)
2) The Sportsman Lodge. This is another mongering hotel with girls and has more reasonable price than DelRay according to their website. I see a standard regular room at $65 per night in their website. (an excellent option, and the Del Rey is just a few blocks away.)
Do they also have the option to hang out in there without you being a guest? (absolutely) and do they have short term rooms? (no)
3) Zona 2, http://zona-2.com/freddies-palace-suite/ Another mongering hotel with girls. The price quoted on the website of 140 USD seems to be too pricey and more expensive than the Hotel DelRey. Again do they have the option of hanging out in their bar if you are not a guess and do they have short term rooms? If so how much? (Haven't been there lately. Ask them?)
4) Scores? What happened to the Hotel Scores? Another mongering hotel with girls. Is it opened, closed, will it opened? This had the best value for the price under 50 USD rooms according to previous reports.
5) Any other mongering hotel with chicas / ticas in there beside Hotel DelRey, Sportsman, Zona2, Scores?
6) Any recommended low end, middle or high end MPs for the day action in San Jose?
7) I saw a Cubadave video http://www.cubadave.com/2015/04/cuba-dave-trapped-costa-rica/ where he is providing some tips. In one of the tips, he recommends that whenmaking a deal with a girl not to rent the rooms and to let the girls rent the rooms instead. I would like some clarification on this? Is that tip for the Delray, Sportmans, Zona2?

Thank you fellow mongers. A lot of questions, but I promise I will post a trip report in return as I have done in Medellin, Carta, Barranquilla, and the DR.
Cerebro1. You can absolutely go to HDR without being a guest, most guys aren't. They don't offer Short Time rooms. There are some very close by. I believe they are $11, but they are dumps. If you want to go the girls generally know where they are located.
2. Hangout / Leave with you Yes. ST Rooms = No.
3. I believe there rate is $65 for the room with the girl. There are ways to get the room for less than $140. That is simply the price for guys that don't know any better. The first option is to simply e-mail them and they will almost always give you a lower rate. There is another option also, PM for the info. If you stay there the price drops from $65 to lime $35 for the girls.
4. Scores is gone. Period. They are remodeling the building but who knows what will happen.
5. The Mona Lisa (new name. T. something. O. L. D. Posted the new name), allegedly has girls there, but I have rarely seen any girl there other than the bartenders.
6. All MP's in Costa Rica are what I would consider "low-End". I like Monica's, there are tons of other's. Relax is 3-4 blocks from HDR, Bar Idem is across the street from Relax. There's a new one named Golden VIP, but its a hump from the Gringo Gulch. They are currently advertising a special 2 Girls x 1 Hour for 18,000 Colones (Less than $40.00).
7. All MP's in Costa Rica are Pension's. Technically Hotels. Therefore all you are actually paying them for is the room rental. I don't really understand it, it's some legal technicality. I really would not worry about it. None of the Pension's actually ask your name, even if you pay them directly.

Answer; Scores has been closed since December and it does not look like it is opening any time soon. Take it off your list.

Answer: the Taormini (Old Mona Lisa) in San Jose and the Cocal in Jaco.

This is my first time going to CR so I'm new. But I have been to a few other Latin countries in the past. Just curious. How easy is it to communicate with the ticas here? Do I need to know good Spanish to able to negotiate what I want between us before heading back to the hotel? Lets say I check at del Rey or Sportman lodge.
The more English they speak, the worse service they give. Relatively more English speaking chicas hang out at both Del Rey and Sportsman's than in almost any other place. Therefore, the service in those two places tends to be the worst in town. But, if you don't speak much Spanish, you won't ever find out how much better the service can be in other places. That is why many people who can't speak much Spanish prefer those two places, and often have a good time there.

I had a client who stayed there by mistake one time. It however did have a $50 guest fee. Tell your lady who is doing the booking that you want to stay at the new Taormini in San Jose. She won't know anything about that hotel. Like I always say, "if you don't know your country, better know your tour company. ".

Not sure its worth hauling my ass down there if I will be indoors the whole time anyway.
So if its just punting, and few outdoor extracurriculars, which reigns supreme and why? I guess its slow / rainy season now. For guys in CR now, what are the going rates at HDR and Cocal? Chica quality?

Thanks!Manny, there is never a bad time to come to see. Are. For some p4 p action. A little slow at Easter and Christmas, that's it. Jaco is always happening on the weekends. The problem you are going to have in Jaco is getting a room, since you are waiting until the last second. Don't confused the green season afternoon rains with the monsoon rains of Asia. Most every morning is clean and there is plenty of surfing to be had in Jaco, not to mention world class surf in Hermosa 5 minutes away. The going rates at HDR is starting at $100 but will settle for $60-$80 and the Cocal it's $150 but will settle for $80-$100 (world class chicas).

Hoping I could get some last minute advice for a last minute trip to SJ for this weekend. Trying to pick a hotel. I have only been to SJ once, five years ago, and don't remember much. Stayed at the HDR, at that time. I have read the forums back about 1. 5 years, but still can't get a clear picture. Disappointingly, no good ROD for some time.
Trying to decide between the most commonly mentioned options: HDR, La Amistad, Sportsman, and Zona 2.
The problem is, I don't have a good idea about how far things are. Are Sportsmans, La Amistad, and Zona 2 close enough that you can pick up a girl from HDR and walk back to your hotel? Somebody else asked this question, but the answer wasn't clear to me.
If possible, I want to take advantage of the Amistad free ride to Jaco. But it would also be nice to stay in a hotel with action at the bar, like the other 3. Reports on girl quality are all over the place, so I'll have to see for myself. Would like to avoid the $10 fee at HDR if possible.
Finally, the room descriptions at sportsman lodge talk about rooms in the "modern wing, courtyard, and clubhouse". Recommendations?
They all seem to cost $100/ night. I don't think that there is a price difference.

All those hotels you mention are 10 to 12 blocks from the Del Rey. Not too many chicas will want to do that walk. Sportsman's is also uphill. If you stay at Sportsman's, avoid the rooms by the bar. Zona 2 has its own women so I personally would not see a reason to bring a woman there from the Del Rey. La Amistad and Zona II are very close to each other. The Presidente is not chica friendly, has not been for several years unless something has changed again.

After reading this thread, I saw that someone recommended the Hotel Morazon, just across the street from the Del Rey, as quieter, so I inquired about their chica status, and they charge nothing for the first woman ($25 if you bring 2). That seemed perfect to me, so I have booked a few nights there when I will pass through in July.
