I guess this report is a bit outdated now, but may be helpful nevertheless. Made a short trip to CR during around Christmas (last year. Yes! Wasn't really 'supposed' to be a mongering trip. Was roaming around the city on Christmas day. It was completely dead. Ended up in HDR since that was the only place that seemed to have some activity. There were a few girls roaming around, maybe 1-2 worth doing takeout. But there seemed enough 'seniors' engaging them already. Based on the past reports on the forum, this was quite expected. Sat down peacefully sipping my beer. There were a bunch of guys just sitting at the bar, snickering away at anybody who was coming in or talking to the girls. Definitely not local. Kind of awkward weirdos. Not really what I'd expect for this place.
I'm rather new to the game, so I guess its easy for the girls to smell fresh blood. Got approached by a Nico, gave me her name as Elie. Bought here a beer and chatted up a bit. She was definitely showing age. Sagging tits and lets just say a bit rounded around the edges. But hey, its just a beer and talk right! I guess after about 30 minutes of badgering, I finally gave in. Agreed for 60 for 2 hours, which I figures cannot be bad. I was staying in what I presumed was non girl-friendly hotel. Didn't want to risk taking her back. So just decided to take her across the street. It was 6000 for 2 hours and 1000 each for 2 covers. Advice. Don't do this. If you're partaking. Stay at a good place. My eye literally caught baby roaches during the session. Not really a comforting feeling.

I had had enough. Spent the next day at Arenal and then back home. Short and sweet. I definitely want to go back and explore this.

New Fantasy seems to be closed! I was there this morning and though a number of girls waved to me from the Pension, the doors were locked and the guard kept insisting 'No Chicas' and 'Closed'. Does any bar have a reputation for the best gals? Seems like Sportsman Lounge has the friendliest staff, which is important, but can it be a dead night there? I was recently there and will tell you age doesn't matter. If you want to connect with another wingman or two go have a drink at Sportsmen or Amistad and many of the guys there will know the ropes. Sportsmen actually has anywhere from 3-6 girls there depending on the time of day. My last trip I actually came across one who was a solid 8 or 9 which was surprising but some of the guys have been saying some new "talent" has been coming by. If you pay in dollars she started at the $100 spot but easily negotiated her down $80 as it was early evening. As always can save more money by paying in Colones. I then later saw the same girl at the Del Rey who came smiling but wasn't interested.
You can go to Sportsmen and have a drink and grab some food check out the talent and head to Del Rey for a short walk with another wingman you find or grab taxi for a couple bucks. Sportsmen will call a taxi but usually has one or two guys waiting there. Del Rey is literally a 3-5 minute taxi ride from Sportsmen's. Amistad is a 3 minute walk from Sporstmens. Personally, I like Amistad bar better but others like Sportsmen. Just depends.
Del Rey will have a solid 20 or more girls during day time then as the weekend night progresses later upwards of 30-40 or more of all shapes, sizes, and looks (for good and bad). Best place at night to go is Del Rey due to the selection available and ability to sit at any one of the 3 bars and watch the girls walk by and eventually flag one down and have a drink and chat and go from there and play the game. You will have Nicas (Nicaraguan), Dominicans, Colombians, and Ticas (Costa Rican) girls walking around.
If you arrive for the day time, there are a number of Massage Parlors (MP) that are also about a 10-15 minute walk from Sportsmen. Pricing is $25-$40 for 30 minutes depending on which one you end up going to and what more you want to negotiate. From my experience, much rather the Del Rey route and if a Sportsmen girl happens to just pop out of the blue like my last trip.
Sportsmen and Amistad have a "homey" kind of feel since they're smaller properties and easy to find another guy to hit the ground running with. Del Rey, you're in the middle of all the action and go downstairs and back up to your room. Can still run into other fellas to connect with. But there is a chica fee for every time you do. Something under $10 I believe nothing outrageous.

What is the deal with some of the reviews on trip advisor, area seems to be scary, with muggings, drug deals, girls slipping you sedatives, etc. How true is this now? If I stick to cabs, am I fine? It might get quiet soon after, assuming there isn't much late-night traffic from guys and their dates noisily strolling by on their way to the rooms in the modern and mansion wings. Or these dates leaving the premises an hour or two later. And the bar opens back up at 7 am along with the nearby breakfast table, frequently attracting a host of early-risers dispensing their "good mornings" and plans for the day. Bottom line: if you are even remotely concerned about the noise factor, avoid these courtyard rooms like the plague.
Avoid those rooms not only because of noise from the bar, but noises you might be making, and general privacy issues. Strictly for rookies and nose pickers. If those are the only rooms available, stay elsewhere. You can still fish in the pond without staying there.
And the bar opens back up at 7 am along with the nearby breakfast table, frequently attracting a host of early-risers dispensing their "good mornings" and plans for the day. Bottom line: if you are even remotely concerned about the noise factor, avoid these courtyard rooms like the plague.Excelente points there Jetsetter. I'll add that the among the early am Breakfast club there are often a few that feel their plans for the days or recounts from the night before are so important that everyone in Barrio Amon needs to hear about them.

First time down in Costa Rica. Spending today in San Jose before heading down to Jaco. First a shout out. Whoever created or sourced that Google map (a few pages prior)- genius. Got here early AM, room wasn't ready (staying at a non-Chica friendly hotel), so strolled around the neighborhood to locate the various spots mentioned in the past reports and on the map.
Partook twice today. First was Krysis spa (Ave 7 and Calle 2)- not worth it. Poor selection and the rooms were run down and did not smell good. Got a half hour session that was one of the lamest in a long while.
Next went to Zona 2. About 5 or 6 girls there and the place was fairly empty. Smoked a Cuban, checked out the girls and got the good vibes from one of them. A short little Nica named Vanessa. Told her I'd be back after I freshened up at my hotel. Came back and she was still around. Bought her a drink and then went up to the room. A very very good session. Total GFE, with BBBJ on her knees and then on the bed, and then with her head hanging of the bed. Fucked in multiple positions. Had my finger in asshole a few times. Think anal is on the cards, but didn't partake.
Hope to hit up one more place before heading to Jaco where I won't be able to hobby.

Several options I know that are common:
Next best in my opinion would be La Amistad and then Hotel El Castillo which is also managed by the same people and recently opened right down the street. They also do an all-inclusive deal which makes it easy for food and drinks.
You have Hotel Taormina which has a mini-casino and is also nice. Hotel Little Havana. Zona 2 actually has 4 large suites and it's also a massage parlor so you just walk downstairs daily for convenience. Hotel Morazan. Some of the main ones that I can think of off the top of my head but I know there are others that some regular vets can probably elaborate on.
Probably want move to "hotel" thread as well some info there.

Only once have I ever seen one there who I seriously considered going with, most of them are 7's at best IMHO.
And really the food isn't that good either to me, but my wingman likes to eat there so I go along. As long as the music isn't too loud. Which it used to be, was better last time. It is an okay place to eat but overpriced.
The Lodge is the place for guys who can't handle the Del Rey where the real action is, but you got to play it right and know how to negotiate and it helps if you speak Spanish. IMHO. The Lodge has a lot of fans but they're guys who can't handle the DR IMHO.

Food also is quite good at the SL IF you know what to order, and prices are lower than the Del Rey.

And addresses are useless if you provide streets, even on business cards, as most think in terms of landmarks. Is true that they all know where the Del Rey is, as well as the Holiday Inn. But other spots in the Gringo Gulch, good luck. To avoid the nonsense I often walk up until about 10 pm. Life involves risks, but they are minimal if you avoid the park.

Arrived at New Fantasy and picked Jimena. I did not see any change from the last time I visited five years ago, so it appears business as usual. A beautiful half Tican half Italian knockout. Hello. I have been to Panama 4 times in the past two years and have found the women are very hot! The prices are right around $100-$125 USD. Food is pretty good. So I would say there is a bit more variety of venues, as well as more venues, in Costa Rica. Food and booze in the grocery store is a bit more expensive in Costa Rica, though, and the fact that Panamá uses the US dollar is convenient. The airport in SJ is quicker and cheaper to get to and from than PTY is, although PTY is a better airport overall. I would say somewhat more English is probably spoken in Panamá, although I am not the best judge of that since I don't use it in either country.
So, personally I much prefer Costa Rica and only find myself in Panamá City because of flight connections. Boquete in Panamá is very nice, that is where I lived, but there is not a hell of a lot going on there other than one venue in David that is also full of colombianas.

I was in Quepos and it about killed me. You do know that is the exact middle of the monsoon season, right?
I'd be staying in SJ if it were my first trip and I only had five days. Others may feel differently. But others may not look like a pomegranate after 45 minutes in the sun.

I am considering a condo rental for my 3 night stay, in the vicinity of hotel del Rey and the park. I am iffy on it because I am not sure if the working girls would come back to a condo or do they prefer to stay in the establishments where they are working? Would it be better to find "freelancers" to come back to the condo and if so where would the best place be to scout for them in that area? I guess I am looking for a GFE where the girls will party with us and then head back to the condo.

I think the gals at Del Rey would be happy to accompany you to your condo; I had no problem getting take-out. I just left CR; was staying elsewhere but went by Del Rey 2 days ago on Monday night. I've stayed there before, but this was work trip and hotel was about 15 - 20 minutes away this trip, so no way I was bringing them back or getting $100+ room at Del Rey. My new friend was happy to leave, but didn't know of a short time hotel nearby. She got directions from security, and a $2 cab ride took us to "Hotel The Office" about 5 blocks from Del Rey for $16 (plus $4 for condoms and her toothpaste). We had a good time, and got a cab to drop her off at Del Rey on my way back to hotel in Pinares (no action out that way).
Monday nights are not very lively, so I picked the best I saw, but nothing there as good as I had met on a Friday / Saturday trip a few months back. After many years of visiting the chicas in CR, I now go to Panama City. Mr. Head is right on the girls; in PTY most are sharks from Colombia and Venezuela who watch the clock (altho I did get very lucky with a regular from Colombia who was fun) while the Ticas in CR are more like party girls you have known in your past (high school, college, etc.). So there's that. Price? Well, 100 will get you a good time in either place. So the reason I will pass on CR now is simply this preference: I just got tired of the poverty in CR. Well, I certainly have been to many countries with way, way more obvious poverty than CR, which has one of the highest per capita incomes in all of Latin America. Although, Panamá does have a higher one than CR. I lived right in downtown San José, in the same block as Zona II, and I never saw any touts. That must be a Del Rey thing; I hate that place. But then again, I never paid $100 for any hookers in either CR or Panamá; the hookers are cheaper in Costa Rica in my experience than in PTY.
I notice that people who go to the Del Rey can't usually spell it correctly so that probably explains why they pay $100; they can't speak Spanish. If I did not speak Spanish I would probably rate PTY more highly as compared to San José, I think. A lot of times people, including mongers, ask me questions like where should I go if I can't speak Spanish. I can't really answer those questions. In any Spanish speaking country, if a hooker comes up to me and starts speaking English, I turn around and walk away. I do the same thing if they are speaking Spanish and start talking about dollars. Gone. My favorite place in CR these days is Pensióand Mónica and even though the owner is a gringo, none of his chicas speak any English that I ever heard. I also like to fish in Bar Málibu, which is owned by a Canadian who can't speak much Spanish, and I don't hear English from any of the hookers in there either. So for those who think $100 is too much and can speak Spanish, those might be good choices. I normally pay 20 k colones to freelancers in San José.
I also notice a lot more hookers from Venezuela now. There are a lot of them in Spain. I guess that reflects the terrible situation that country is in. Ten years ago venezolanas were pretty rare in Spain. I like them better than colombianas for sure.

The quality in the Veneto has gone down since they control what girls can get in. As noted already, the CR girls like to party and don't press you for their time. I prefer to get to know the girl and her personality before doing the transaction. If you stay at the Del Rey, you can't go wrong. Thanks.I have the idea that will be your first trip to any mongering destination. At a pension, you pick a lady and go to the room with her, with very little, if any, conversation beforehand. At the Sportsmans Lodge and the Hotel Del Rey, you can usually spend some time with a lady at the bar to get to know her a little, before making the decision to go to the room. Also, you may be the first customer of the day for the lady at the SL or the HDL; you may be the fifth customer of the day at the pension. For many mongers, at a pension, it's just a mechanical exercise; at the SL, it can feel like you have a relationship with the lady, even if the relationship only lasts for an hour or two.
An excellent description of the difference between the two venues. I would add, however, that one can develop relationships with the gals in the pensiones over time. That usually requires living there and being fluent in Spanish. I developed relationships with two ladies from Mónica's when I lived there. Took 4-8 visits but then I got their digits and they would come to my place for a couple of hours on their days off, for a meal, some drinks, and several rounds of fucking. I would give them 30 k, a good payday for them, plus of course the F & be they got. I did this with numerous privado gals in Buenos Aires as well.

Thanks.Generally speaking. the pensiones provide very mechanical sex with girls who are clock watchers and really don't like sex and probably don't like you. This is, again, a generalization, and you can get lucky and find a hot girl who is into sex at a pension but it's much more likely to find a girl who's actually into having a good time, at the Del Rey or Key Largo or Sportsman's Lodge.

Closed Pensions: Following 3 Pensions are permanently closed or moved elsewhere:

Costa Rica visit from 8/7 through 8/16 in San Jose with 4 days in Dominical +.
Outbound: Aviancia flight from SFO, San Francisco to SJO, Costa Rica left on time at 1. 30 am. Flight first to El Salvador and then a connecting flight to SJO. Hotel Sportsman Lodge: Good enough. Bar food was very tasty and cheap. Stayed 6 days 4+2.
I think the bar area is old and tired looking and could do with a revamp. The hotel does NOT charge a Tica fee. The Reception folks are helpful. The rooms are also decent and good price. In addition, the Hotel has a decent FREE breakfast.

Beaches: I went to the beach and found that it was a pebbles beach. Big pebbles and definitely not a sunbathing beach. It is for surfers and I did find quite a few white folks around this very small town, heavily out numbering the few locals.
Dominical has sand underneath the pebbles and could be a sunbathing beach if the city clears the pebbles. Not an easy task. An improvement on the street lighting should help and fill out the large puddles on the roads. Cannot see it happening. Also, found that eating out was more expensive than SJO.
As you go further south of this 3-4 street city to Uvita and Ojochal, it becomes more gringo and no locals to be seen.
All this talk there about eco this and that is all BS. It's all talk, as you need to rent a car to get anywhere, as transportation is very expensive. Therefore, with all those rental cars using gasoline and gas fumes is not much eco. In many places, you need a 4 x4 SUV, as roads are not paved. Costa Rica is a big fraud. I found eating out to the normal run if the mill restaurants was more costly than in California. Let us not even talk about the more expensive restaurants. A total fraud. Do not understand why it is so expensive. The gringo's effect? It is more like the gringos buying property and then fleecing gringo visitors.
I am looking for a sunbathing destination and less touristy. Hence, Costa Rica is not the place.
Communication:
In Costa Rica, I did not buy a local sim card. In addition, my USA carrier H2 O does not work here. I found that the Ticas use WhatsApp. In addition, I can look up and send emails by using just Wi-Fi. I can call or text both via WhatsApp. However, this is limited to WhatsApp recipients only. Point I am making is that, in countries where people use WhatsApp or WeChat, the need to buy local sim card does not exist. WhatsApp does not need a sim card once you have verified a number on some phone.
So far, I have been using WhatsApp for all communication.
Overall opinion on Costa Rica:
There will always be gringos from places in USA making the short trip to Costa Rica to full fill their sexual needs as $100.00 is not too bad compared to what they'll have to pay back home. Personally, I found Costa Rica to be a very expensive and over rated country. It is the most taxed and expensive Central American country. Many gringos everywhere. Maybe that created the price explosion. Nature wise, nothing that is not present in many other countries. Nothing exceptional. Ticas mostly fat and out of shape with a few decent looking. As for me, I have seen a lot better countries both nature wise and women. Moreover, women are better looking and prices are much lesser elsewhere. SJO is an average looking city. Went on city tour to learn about the city.
Costa Rica would not be a country to make a second visit for me. I did not find it exciting at all. This is my opinion and not a recommendation. Gracias. Keep hunting.

The setup is good at the Lodge. Hit the front or back bar when you want, play pool, watch games and the bar daily special food is very delicious and also cheap. Talk to girls and most are not pushy for lady drinks. It's up to you. Once you have agreed your deeds for a price, take the girl (s) to your room and take your alcohol with you. Return afterwards to the bar and do what ever you. The rooms are cleaned daily. There is also a some weights and weight machines plus cardio bicycles if you feel like exercising. Walk to the downtown is short. Taxi from airport is $30.00 and back to airport is $25.00. Free hot breakfast from 8. 00 AM and otherwise breads / fruits only from 5. 00 AM. The City Bus tour is $70.00. Worth it as I saw a lot and learnt a lot about Costa Rica and San Jose. Includes lunch. Hotel has other tours too.
When I sent to Dominical after 4 days, the Lodge let me keep my suitcase in their storage for no charge as I was coming back after visiting Dominical.

On my flight from Costa Rica to Panama I was sitting next to a younger American couple, maybe in their 30's. They are now living in Costa Rica and Panama before that. They said that what I feel about CR, they heard the same from some friends who were visiting them and they also said that CR was over rated and expensive, They were on their way to Spain and it was cheaper for them to fly to Panama and buy the tickets there than in Costa Rica. CR seems like a has been story. But if some want to go there, so be it. Enjoy life.

When I first walked in I immediately regretted my decision to stay there. I had a room in the mansion wing, nothing luxurious about it. The carpet was in dire need of deep steam cleaning. The Cocal in Jaco was much more to my liking. In the end, I made the best of my time in CR, had several good sessions, but I won't be returning. I had a much better time in Panama.
Heard that starting next month (October) the HDR will be going floor by floor to replace the carpet in the rooms. That's a good start. I wonder how long this will last and the impact on reservations. Just sending out a heads-up!

Long time monger (but newbie in this forum) in Costa Rica. I also heard about the Del Rey converting into a family type of establishment. Heard a general rumor that the Hotel Del Rey will allegedly change their business model and become a family type of hotel and will no longer allow the ladies to loiter around for business. I first heard this rumor around a couple of months ago but its gaining steam. Initially the plan was to make this conversion after their next annual super bowl party in 2018 but now this has supposedly changed. Quite a few girls who work there have told me that the change will now be effective after Halloween this year. Not sure if others can chime in or have heard anything related to this. The girls say that after these supposed changes take effect then only the Key Largo across the street will allow the girls to work their stuff. Dunno.I'm going to be visiting CR again in December. Even though I've brought the flight already I will wait until sometime in November before I book the hotel and I'll probably contact the hotel directly so I don't end up with any surprises LOL.

San Jose is not as bad as some of you may think. I've been to Costa Rica nearly 20 times. I live in Florida and the flight on spirit airlines is dirt cheap. The HDR is legendary. It will never be a family hotel in my view. It will always be known as the pink pussy palace. I've had incredible experiences in HDR with some of the most beautiful ticas on the planet!
Have met countless monger's who I'm still close with til this very day at HDR. I personally know the entire staff and have always been treated good. The one complaint I have is the charging to take a chica up to your room. Absolutely ridiculous.
Costa Rica is a beautiful country with beautiful people. The Ticas are some of the best in bed that I've ever experienced.

OK, and website for Sportsmans makes the rooms look really nice. Thanks for the advice.In my opinion the SL is not a good place to stay. Why?
1) very few girls in comparison to the del rey / key largo scene.
2) most rooms at the SL are noisy (but then I guess they are at the DR too).
3) SL is mostly older guys. In their 60's, which is okay but I like more of a mixed crowd.
4) SL hand picks the girls which to me is too limiting; I like the variety and mass quantity of the Del Rey.
5) SL is too much like a sports bar (thus the name I guess).
6) SL is a place you can't walk to and from like the Del Rey is and the taxi drivers overcharge especially at night.

The Presidente soon became a family freindly place, only two blocks from the Del Rey, and has thrived.
There is a lot we don't know about the financial picture or the Del Rey.
1) Is it really always full?
2) What type of payoffs to they need to pay in order to keep open? I would not minimize this.
3) How much does the bar really make? So many mongers are so cheap!!
4) How much revenue comes from gambling?
5) Have they been told by the city / government that the gig is up? Perhaps that is signaling the change? We just can't know.

I have been living in Costa Rica for the last 30 years, I am therefore one of those whiteheads.
Maybe the newcomers think the HDR is full and active may I throw some cold water on their parade.
I was there again two weeks ago, and here is my take.
Whereas some 10 years ago you could literally not walk through the bar area it was so full of girls and punters today there is no problem walking amongst the patrons no pushing. The girls were everywhere and the quality was at its best. (ahhh good memories).
The casino was busy with all the tables having gamblers with piles of chips in front of them. Today there was only 3 tables open and many seats were empty.
Then 2008 happened. The dollar lost its exchange superiority. Slowly I have noticed the decline in the number of customers, and those that showed up were more careful with their capital. The girls started raising their prices to maintain their standard of living or / and the quality of service declined gradually.
Let's face it. The dollar decline has impacted enormously on the trade down here, and I might add throughout Latin America, as I note that Panama since the end of the construction of the second canal (and where I also spend nearly half of my calendar now) tourism in our field of endeavour is way down as Habanos is lacking patrons on many nights and the Veneto is in my eyes empty.
I am afraid the golden years have gone. The HDR closing down and becoming family friendly would not surprise me in the least.

C5.I totally agree with what you said. It is unfathomable to me that any business owner would be stupid enough to get rid of a bar that is full of 50-200 (drinking customers EVERY single night of the week! You'd have to be stupid!
So glad you agree with me about the Key Largo music and glad to know it's not just because I'm "an old fogie". I love rock music, I love some Latino music, I love blues, jazz. And loud is okay too. But not SO LOUD it gives me an immediate headache! It does seem that first bar when you come in tends to attract the Ticos and many many Ticos love music so loud it can be heard for miles. Literally. So hopefully if they move everything over to KL if enough of us complain about the loud music and horrible bands they might change it?? Don't know but it's worth a try. I for one will be complaining as high up the chain as I can get because I literally cannot stand being in that place for more than 3 minutes with the music not only too loud but also lousy!

I have been living in Costa Rica for the last 30 years, I am therefore one of those whiteheads.
Maybe the newcomers think the HDR is full and active may I throw some cold water on their parade.
I was there again two weeks ago, and here is my take.
Whereas some 10 years ago you could literally not walk through the bar area it was so full of girls and punters today there is no problem walking amongst the patrons no pushing. The girls were everywhere and the quality was at its best. (ahhh good memories).
The casino was busy with all the tables having gamblers with piles of chips in front of them. Today there was only 3 tables open and many seats were empty.
Then 2008 happened. The dollar lost its exchange superiority. Slowly I have noticed the decline in the number of customers, and those that showed up were more careful with their capital. The girls started raising their prices to maintain their standard of living or / and the quality of service declined gradually.
Let's face it. The dollar decline has impacted enormously on the trade down here, and I might add throughout Latin America, as I note that Panama since the end of the construction of the second canal (and where I also spend nearly half of my calendar now) tourism in our field of endeavour is way down as Habanos is lacking patrons on many nights and the Veneto is in my eyes empty.
I am afraid the golden years have gone. The HDR closing down and becoming family friendly would not surprise me in the least.

I was at the Del Rey 6 months ago and it was so full it was like sardines packed in a can. That was a Fri or Sat night. Were you there on a Mon or Tue or something?
Also the quality of the girls was great. True, a few more fatties but also 50 - 100 decent to great looking ones to choose from. Let's put it this way: if you couldn't find someone to go with the nights I was there, you've got a personal problem!
I live here, the dollar is STRONG, and I can almost guarantee you that at least on weekends the Del Rey is full. However right now is the worst of the rainy season here so it is POSSIBLE tourism is down but it'll be back up in December.

People are saying if you call the DR and make reservations for Nov and ask if the bar will be operating "as usual" with girls, the answer is YES.

' Then there was the Cuba Dave fiasco, as you mention, which attracted a lot of unwanted attention. Costa Rica is a pretty unique Latin country in that it was never really fully conquered or colonized, and no one really cared because they have no extractable metals to speak of. So the whole virgin / working girl thing and the whole mestizo thing were way less influential and thus way less ingrained in CR, and that is probably why prostitution developed somewhat more openly in CR than in other places. It's not hard to see why the powers that be would want to tone it down some.

I was there for four months once and I never changed any money (although my landlord was a gringo and I was paying rent in dollars).
ATM is your best friend. Been said many times on these pages, avoid exchange offices especially ones in the airport. The only country you most likely won't get screwed (or screwed badly) for exchanging currency is China as the government strictly controls the exchange regime. But still, always use your ATM and notify your bank ahead of time of your travel plans so they won't block your card if used outside of your home country.

Thanks.Passport is all that's needed. Most girl's will want dollar's which is widely accepted all over San Jose. Sometimes however it is cheaper to pay in Colonies.

Thanks.Since the SL quotes the room rates in dollars, you should use dollars to pay that. Everything else, use colonies. It is not easier in pay in dollars anywhere you go in SJ, unless the price is quoted only in dollars. Some of the ladies know the exchange rate, and may insist on dollars; but most will accept colonies at 500/1. Make sure you negotiate with them in colonies. You don't want a scene with them demanding dollars because that is what you offered them.
All you need is your passport and the address of where you are staying.

One of the problems is that most banks have a low withdrawal amount. If you want more than a couple hundred dollars in colonies, you will probably have to go to more than one bank's ATM. The banks and the Colonial Casino will give you good exchange rates. In the airport, on the departure side, there is a Bank of San Jose that will give you a good rate. Walk in to the departure area and turn left. Go all the way to the checkpoints. The Bank of San Jose is on your left. There are money exchange booths in that area also. Ignore them and go to the bank.

First of all you naysayers who say there is no more GFE and no more big crowds of girls have apparently gone on bad nights. Both still exist and not that rare at all.
Maybe the GFE is a little harder to get than it used to be but you can still get it.
As to crowds last time I went (last July or so) the place was PACKED like sardines. And I've heard reports of the same thing since then, in the past several months.
I absolutely cannot believe the HDR will close or kick out the girls. They are business men, not stupid idiots. Why would they kill the goose that lays the golden eggs?
Money:
DO NOT bring $100 or $50 bills, people are afraid of them, there have been many counterfeits. Maybe it's better than it used to be but use $20s or even $10s to avoid problems.
Get a Capitol One 360 account in the USA. No ATM charges and good exchange rates without exchange fees. I closed my Chase account quickly and use CapOne which is awesome. No need to bring much money to CR just use your Cap One debit card in most any machine in Costa Rica. Occasionally an old machine won't accept the new Chip cards but not hard to find ones that will like at Scotia Bank or BCR. I live here and use Cap One exclusively so I never pay an ATM fee nor ridiculous exchange fees.
No one should ever pay over $100 to a girl, they will think you're a sucker and you'll drive up the rate to the rest of us. I try to pay 40 mil which is about $70 and I never pay more than 50 mil which is around $87. You need to negotiate a little! If you're in love with her and she refuses to go that low then okay give her the $100 but try not to. $100 is a cr*p load of money here!

Haven't pulled that much since last year so maybe it has changed but I doubt it. I pulled $450 recently in one pull at the Scotia ATM. Pretty sure you can still do 2 back to back at Scotia.
At BCR the limit might be around $200 but you can do 2 back to back, I did it the other day. It said "You've reached your limit" and so I put my card back in for another limit!
At Davivienda you can also get quite a bit, maybe $500, I forget.
It's always possible. Like most things in CR. That different cities have different rules, or different branches do (though I doubt different branches do). So bring 2-3 cards just in case one doesn't work.
But I do use my Cap one card exclusively and have yet to have a problem and I use it every week and have for 2 years here.

First of all you naysayers who say there is no more GFE and no more big crowds of girls have apparently gone on bad nights. Both still exist and not that rare at all.

Get a Capitol One 360 account in the USA. No ATM charges and good exchange rates without exchange fees. I closed my Chase account quickly and use CapOne which is awesome. No need to bring much money to CR just use your Cap One debit card in most any machine in Costa Rica. Occasionally an old machine won't accept the new Chip cards but not hard to find ones that will like at Scotia Bank or BCR. Know what "trato tipo novia" means. And that they don't hurry or "sin prisa" (seen pree-sa).

First off "Diaro" is not a reputable source of news so the "newspaper report" is questionable.
What I have heard is that the Del Rey will be remodeled after the Super Bowl and that some of the girls will be allowed at Key Largo but not all.
Even this makes no sense to me. Why, if you are operating a bar, would you want to limit the number of drinking customers?
And even if the girls are not drinking, the men who are there to SEE them ARE drinking!
I have high hopes and would almost bet money that Key Largo will indeed take up the slack and the same girls will go there as went to the Del Rey UNLESS they have been previously banned from KL.
My only worry is not that the girls will go away but that Key Largo will continue to BLAST that horrible music in the entrance room to the point of making your ears bleed, and those horrible bands will continue to play live. If that is the case, honestly, I may retire from mongering in Gringo Gulch and stick to the SL, Zona and etc.
That would be disappointing but do-able. The SL will be picking up a LOT of customers I think if the KL is the new place for the girls, because I'm sure a lot of older gringos like me can't take that super loud music. C5.Well, before you began going to the Del Rey, when I began coming here to Costa Rica, the Key Largo was THE place, the ONLY Place (aside from massage parlors and strip clubs) to pick up working girls! It was just like the Del Rey back then, in that there were tons of girls and it was busy and they didn't play super loud annoying music, and it was GREAT!

Was in HDR on Tuesday of last week and had no issues with either the numbers or looks with the working girls in attendance. Beautiful women outnumbered the mongers even though there were some women that were either on the heavier side or not as attractive as I desired. Just got back from an amazing 2-weekend trip to Costa Rica. Stayed at the Sportsmen's Lodge. Great food, nice rooms! Most of the girls I saw were from the bar at Sportsmen's and I was never disappointed. Went to HDR Sunday night when things were a little slow at SL. It's true, there are more girls there, and things are alive and well at HDR. Also tried out one of the Pensions, and I ended up finding the hottest girl of the whole trip for only 12,000 colones for half hour, plus tip. This was at Pension Exotica at Calle 11 and Avenida 14. I played golf at 2 different golf courses-- Valle del Sol, and Cariari. Stayed out in the countryside during the week, and it was beautiful. Wanted to report on my trip, as all the advice I got on this board beforehand was very helpful. I look forward to going back soon!

I've been mongering at DR / KL for 25+ years and only recently was I ever even asked to pay up front. Letting my little head do the thinking with this gorgeous little piece of a- I agreed. As to the Sportsmans Lodge I have been there numerous times, never found more than one girl who I was actually interested in doing but I much prefer the gringo gulch so I didn't even go to SL this time around and usually only go to SL to eat once in a blue moon but really even their food isn't that good IMHO. To me the whole Sl scene reeks of amateur mongers. No offense to any of you who like it, I'm sure there must be a few mongers who do (but it's not for me. It's open, it's booming, and I found no real evidence. Not even testimonial. That it is going to close its doe 's to ho' s.
I asked numerous people like the desk folks at the Morazan, and various girls and only one girl seemed to think there was any truth to it but her info was very sketchy. She said one of the 3 owners of the DR was sick and that was why they were closing. I don't know if that's even true, that there are 3 owners or that one is sick but that was her supposedly inside info. Anyway it seems to be shakey logic that just because one is sick that they'd close a gold mine down and turn it into a family hotel that will fail for sure in that area! Just makes no sense to me at all! So I don't buy the idea that the DR will close to the monger business at all.
Anyway, the DR was really great. I went on a Thur and Fri night and both nights were very good in terms of lots of selection and a Good selection!
Last time I was there was in Feb 2017 and that was very good! But this time was even better in terms of selection. I don't know what happened or if it was just the luck of the night, but I saw much fewer fat chicks and ugly chicks this time! Last time there were the most fat chicks and ugly chicks I'd ever seen but it didn't bother me because there were also plenty of attractive ones. But this time lots of attractive ones and much fewer unattractive ones.
But the first night was kind of a fail for me but so it goes. In the end it wasn't the worst time I've had. Just wasn't what I wanted nor expected in terms of my choice.
Met a girl right off the bat who was very personable and that's important to me. We hit it off with conversation (in espanol) and she had a pleasant if not great face and what looked like a very nice thin and fit body but she was not showing off her stomach or anything. That should have been my clue to be wary. But I liked her anyway so decided to take the chance after talking to her for almost an hour and only buying her a couple drinks.
I negotiated her to 40 mil, probably coulda gotten her for less, and we went back to my room and she jumped in the shower and came out while I waited in bed. I had already showered just an hour or so before and this was my first of the night.

Key Largo sucks. Has sucked for the past few years and it's so bad now I can't believe they can even keep it open. Must be a money laundering type situation.
The only reason I can imagine they keep it open otherwise, is if they do plan to move the girls over there for awhile while the Del Rey renovates. I am not even sure they are both owned by the same owner (s) but think maybe they are.
I hate the super loud music at the back entrance from the parking lot. It gives me a headache and I talked to several other mongers who agree. After about 1 min. My head begins to hurt from it.
The live bands also suck! I mean they are just the worst, and it's a shame because a few years ago the bands were pretty good and I passed a few nights dancing there and having a very good time.
But now no one goes in there (there were maybe 10 or 15 girls and about the same # of guys. And that was at midnight when the place should be hopping.
Both nights I walked through a couple times, every time it was dead, and every time they were blaring that annoyingly loud music.
My theory is that the mongers hate that music and that's why they don't go in there and thus the girls also don't go in because even If they like the loud music there are few mongers in there to pick them up.
I'm done going in there except for a quick walk through now and again and If they move the girls over there I honestly won't be able to stand being in there more than long enough to grab someone and take her somewhere else to talk, maybe outside in the parking lot, because that noise in there gives me a headache every time.
I hope you guys will join me in complaining to the management via the bartenders or whatever, about the annoying too-loud music!

Zona II. I used to LOVE that place back in the days of Pamela and her lezbo fave of the day. Long time ago.
Since then it has just gone increasingly downhill in terms of talent, and the girls seem uninterested for the most part and most are not even very attractive. AND there are often very few to choose from as well.
I've now gone in there once every year or two under several owners and it's never gotten good since years ago. I'm almost to the point of thinking it's not even worth it to walk in. I had hope with the recently-new owner but these owners and / or managers just don't seem to know how to hire the right girls and get them to perform. There was a time when the girls in there really seemed to like their jobs or at least were very good at pretending. In the case of Pamela, man! There was no doubt she enjoyed her 3 somes! But I had others in there back then that were great, too!

One was talking to a guy and not very attractive IMHO, and the other was sitting 2 seats away from me. She tried to get my attention but honestly I just wasn't interested in her looks so I just ignored her and was waiting to see if someone else showed up.
After 20 min or so I asked the bartender if there were any other girls and she said no just these 2. I said "well what about tomorrow (Fri)? What are the hours for girls?" She said the girls tend to come in around 2 and leave around 5 or 6 pm.
I remember back in the day there were like maybe 10 girls and they even had a shift change or two with new talent throughout the day.

Okay, the Morazan has always been my favorite hotel because it's cheap, right in the heart of the gulch, and the people have always been nice. And let's not forget our favorite: Ricky Ricardo, the World's Greatest Bell Boy! LOL.
So okay I was told the new owners took it over about 8 months ago and have renovated. New tv's, new curtains and a few other things here and there. "That's nice" I thought.
I called earlier in the week to make my reservation and the girl who answered the phone said there were plenty of rooms for Thur and Fri and I didn't need one. I thought that seemed odd because I've often seen it full on Fri's in the past so I said "Well let me make a reservation anyway. ".
She insisted I didn't need one so I said okay and g'bye and hung up the phone.
On 2nd thought I decided to go ahead and make one anyway, via expedia. Good thing I did because the place WAS FULL and I might not have gotten a room had I not made my reservation via Expedia. Strike one. Some idiot desk clerk who was apparently too lazy to make a reservation for me!
So I showed up around noon on Thur and check in technically isn't until 3 pm but they usually accommodate me and get me in by 1 or so. I had asked for an interior room because they're quieter and they said they'd try so he said to come back in an hour or so.
I did and they checked me in to a room on the 4th floor, NOT an interior room but I didn't complain, I just wanted to lay down for a while, I was tired from the long trip in to San Jose.
Well as soon as Ricky walked out, I noticed the room stunk from sewage. I went down to the desk and the guy said "Oh. Okay, yeah sometimes it does. But you'll have to wait a while for another room. Here, go up and check this one and he gave me a key and I went up but the new room was still dirty but at least did not stink.
The maid was there and looked at me like what are you doing, didn't you just check into the other room?" I told her it stunk and she went in and said it didn't. I said "Well then there's something wrong with your nose because it definitely does smell and I showed her it was coming from the toilet but the toilet was clean, it was the sewer. She said no and was obviously pissed because I didn't want to take the room.
I said "Well the guy downstairs said yes it does sometimes smell and no I don't want to smell sewer. " I was actually very nice to her but she was starting to make me mad insisting it didn't smell when it obviously did.
In fact soon her manager came up and checked and she confirmed that it smelled and said they'd get me the other room soon.
Long story short it took about 45 min for the maid to get my new room clean because instead of jumping ahead down the line to my room she just went down the hall in order while I sat by the elevator so tired I could barely sit up! WTF?! All she had to do was clean my new room first, but noooooo!
So: yes they renovated the rooms to some degree but.
-the faucet still dripped.
-the lamp had loose wiring to the point it made me think it might catch on fire, and.
-the door key-card didn't work right.
I complained about the key because I didn't want to come up with my girls and have trouble getting into my room at night when there's no staff around to fix it. They said they'd send someone up but never did. Surprise surprise.
I also.
-didn't get a floor towel, and.
-there was no hot water the next morning when I wanted to shower.
Okay so the next day I asked for a floor towel and she gave me one but when I came back I noticed.
-there was no hand towel this time.
I usually get the little chubby maid and she's great but this one really sucked at her job.
I gave her a good tip the first day anyway because I wanted an extra bath towel in case I brought 2 girls back (which I did). She said she'd give me one but I had to wait for some reason. Well.
-she never did bring it so I was short a towel that night.
Meanwhile when I brought back my 2 girls the guy at the desk told me I'd have to pay $25 extra for the extra girl. I said "What? I've been coming here 25 years and never been charged for an extra girl!" New owner, new policy he says. I said I'd pay it for now but would talk to him later.
After the girls left (see my report on that below) I asked him if they could waive the $25 extra charge because I never have been charged that and after all since the room is only $50 a night.
-how do they figure $25 for only one extra girl for one hour, and hell I couldn't even get an extra towel so where is the justification for more money for an extra girl? Where is the added expense?
He said I could take it up with the manager tomorrow so I said I would do that.
On check out the girl at the desk had printed out the fine print policy which did state there was a $25 extra charge but what good is that written policy if they don't tell you that or even show you the paper when you check in?
I said that I didn't mind paying a reasonable extra fee but $25 extra is a gouge and I don't like being gouged. I'm sure someone here will say I'm being too uptight and complaining too much but I disagree. I think it's just unreasonable to charge $25 for one extra guest for one dammed hour! And not even an extra towel.
So while in spite of the lack of towels, the refusal to fix my door key, the lousy lamp, no good place to charge my phone, no hot water in the morning. And now no fruit with breakfast either (now THAT's cutting corners! Fruit is cheap in Costa Rica! I would still stay at the Morazan but for the $25 extra charge. 3 somes are my thing and so that basically increases my room rent 50%! I think $10 extra would be fair.
So. I will now probably go to a different hotel even if it's the same or more money just out of not wanting to be gouged that way.

Now, some rooms are indeed short term rooms, but they don't want to put you in those, unless you just want a room for short term. The location is excellent to explore for women, or walk around the city. The internet has been 59 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload which is quite fine with me. They also have good Air conditioning If you pay in person it is $59 a night. But I've booked it on Orbitz with the 15% coupon codes and my final price is only $46 a night, plus I get some Orbitz credit also. Also, no chica fee if the girl stays less than 4 hours. My only complaint is the music from Key Largo can be loud for sure. But, I actually don't go to sleep til about when they turn off the music anyways. If you like to sleep early, then it probably isn't the place for you. Perhaps a room on the other side of the hotel will be more quiet. My friend negociated a $60 a night price at the Amistad. Normal price was $89 a night. They have very fast internet. I tested the Internet at Amistad at 103 Mbps download and 6 Mbps upload. But my friends room had no desk or table.

But if you bring in 2 girls at once they will charge $25 for the 2nd girl. The guy I see most of the time seems cool and easy to talk to. If you are a member at Orbitz, lately I get the room for $46 a night final price, just use the 15% coupon codes they always have. Also if you use an Orbitz credit card and use a phone or tablet to book you will get 10% in Orbucks. True price will be about $42 a night. That's the current price though. I'm sure it fluctuates.
Last time I heard that the ownership of del Ray changed and the new owner, lady, wants to make it a family place. No more girls. Can someone confirm this with me?I've been going there once or twice a day for 5 days now. It all seems normal to me. A couple days ago one of the rooms had a fire though. A chica told me one of the air conditioning units caught on fire. She told me she happened to be in the next room. LOL She said a lot of people panicked. Anyways, the bar was open the same night when I went. A different girl told me about the fire and said she went home for the rest of the day. I will go to the DR tonight and ask the front desk about this rumor of closing.
I asked a guy at the front desk about if they will close down. He strongly said that is not true. He didn't seem to want to talk about it anymore than that. I have some more to write about the other places, but I just got here to Medellin today and I need to take a nap.

I went to Pension Monica yesterday. I want to say that the fee was $30 for a half hour. The girl that opened the door was tall with a nice figure. I would say she was her early 20's. I went to Casa Portuguese yesterday. It is on Calle 6 between Ave 3 and 5 I believe. There are three "massage" place in a row on this street and I poked my head in each one. This trip report is primarily for people who have never been to San Jose or haven't been there in a long time. Day 1, I went to my regular spots to see if everything was the same.
Little Havana. Went there Friday afternoon. Only 3 girls working and all were 5 or below. 2 chicas were sitting down and stared at the wall when I entered, while one acted like she wanted to earn pesos. 1 HR /$60 damage on site seems a little much these days for a 5 and below, but who cares. Her skills were a 9. I returned Saturday night to Little Havana at 8 pm. 2 chicas inside and both were 4's. I left for better options.
Sportsmen Lodge. What a shit show. Full of Ticas with bad breath and high prices. Aggressive chicks looking for 1 HR /100 rate. Not worth it. I tried the breakfast there. It was decent with rice and eggs, toast and pineapple. The one good thing about the S. Lodge is they don't charge for guest. The fucking hotel rooms are a shit show too. Similar to a Motel 8 in the USA Cost $65/ per night + tax. Walls are thin and you can here noise outside. However, you can save on the cost of the guest fee.
Hotel del Rey. What the fuck has happen to the quality of women in the Del Rey? Most mongers come to Costa Rica to bang blanca Colombian mujeres. For the first time the majority of women I saw in the Del Rey were Ticas. Almost 100% of the women have kids with bad see-section scars or stretch marks. I banged 2 of the best Ticas I could find in the Del Rey and they both had mediocre to bad service. None of them can take dick bigger than 5' repeatedly. They say you have un hora sexo, but they can only really fuck for 20 minutes and try to spend the rest of the time sucking dick thru a condom. Then they have the nerve to tell you it cost $20 more to suck dick without a condom. Ironically, I spent the majority of my time banging Dominican women, which I find them to be more athletic in the bedroom. But I did not fly to Costa Rica to fuck Dominicanas LOL. Since I was not impressed with my usual spots: the Del Rey, Little Havana and Sportsmen Lodge I decided to go unconventional and try the non-pro game.
I downloaded Tinder and began to swipe right every chica. Surprisingly I had 10 matches of non-pros and 1 pro. The 1 pro was from Venezuela with a decent body. I rate her a 8. Costs maybe $1.00 and you can either push the button if it drives by your stop downtown, or take it to the city center and catch an Uber, or taxi. You will of course need coins "monedas" because the bus fare is so low, so I went to trade in $100 at the money exchange in the airport. Be sure to ask the person to be sure to give you monedas para el autobus). So, on a Saturday, I checked into the apartamento I found on AirBnB, then went hunting. (Another travel tip: apartamentos give you a key and don't care who you bring back, although best to get an "entire place" rental, not just a room, if using AirBnB and also confirm with host that no problem if I bring a novia back with me, as some places on AirBnB specifically say they do not allow the ladies in).
Monica's. I had never been but read great reviews here. It was like 4-5 pm on a Saturday. There were two chicas available, both stout, but I found the 18 yr old Emma to have a cute face. The place was fine for 14 k colones ($24) but even Emma had a belly and arm fat.
Del Rey. Ok, so later that night, after some food at Tin Jo (great Asian place on same street as Idem why Relax) I decided to go to ground zero, the Blue Marlin bar. In the past, say '99 through '09, that place was always a sure bet. There would be dozens if not a hundred ladies there. And even then you could find several to pick from. The hotties outnumbered the fatties. Times have certainly changed. It may have been early, only 7-8 pm, but was I disappointed. I sat through several beers trying to figure out which was the "least fat", and there were only like 15-20 ladies in the whole place. I was about to leave when I met a 23 yr old tica Angie. Yes, chica friendly. $20. You can walk through the casino and across the street to the Del Rey. Quick and easy. Dollar exchange is reasonable. If you don't want to spend $20 and just want to get off, there's a hotel across the street from the DR that charges $7 for two hours that is very clean also.

I forgot the prices he told me. But he said if you take a girl from the bar you don't have to pay a room fee anymore which means the girls are about half price. I think we paid $40 to fuck there girls there. I should report sooner, I forget more than I remember these days. Anyways, if you pay $40 to take the girl, $20 went to the bar for a 'room rental'. Hotel Little Havana should be slightly more South on Google Maps. Zona II has a new name of Bar & Pension 506 for the local men, and I think it will probably keep the name Zona II for the gringos or old timers. If you took a taxi you would probably be better off calling it Zona II.
I have pounded that pavement-Zona II, now Pension 506 is on the corner of Ave 9 and Calle 3 A. Since physical addresses and numbers mean jack in Costa Rica, it doesn't matter what the 'official' address is -Ave 9 or Calle 3 A, but it is hard to miss on the corner! And Little Havana is adjacent to it on 3 A as well.

I lived on that exact block for four months and can also confirm. Calle 3 A between Avenidas 9 and 7. I miss that apartment. Full size washer and dryer and hot water everywhere. Haven't had all that since.

I will make sure to book an extra person on my reservation.When you check in, tell them you want a room on the side of the hotel facing the parking lot, not the Parque Morazon. There's a ton of traffic on the park side at all hours and the noise will keep you up unless you can sleep through anything.
Also, late at night if walking back to the Sleep Inn through the Parque Morazon, beware of the "chica bananas. " If you're returning from the Sportsmen's late, it's best to take a cab.

Got some (very unexpected) time off of work and thought about redeeming some airline miles for a short-ish trip to San Jose. Was there in March 2016 and had a great time. Planning to arrive mid-day on New Year's Day (Monday) and leave mid-day on Thursday.
Question though: Is this a slow time of year for mongering, given the proximity to the holiday? Might just save my time and money if there are a lot fewer girls around than normal. I know this is an issue around Easter.

Got some (very unexpected) time off of work and thought about redeeming some airline miles for a short-ish trip to San Jose. Was there in March 2016 and had a great time. Planning to arrive mid-day on New Year's Day (Monday) and leave mid-day on Thursday.
Question though: Is this a slow time of year for mongering, given the proximity to the holiday? Might just save my time and money if there are a lot fewer girls around than normal. I know this is an issue around Easter.

Club Pantera Rosa, there were about 10-15 girls there and 3 girls that were pretty hot. I picked a tight body girl with blonde hair and tattoos named Lucy from Nicaragua. She would not go for the half hour and made a lot of promises at a really high rate. I took the bait and went to the room with her. Services was barely ok so I left and spoke to management. They give me a different girl for a half hour and I had a much better time. I finished and left the club quickly, luckily I parked close because as I was driving away a few guys come out of the club looking for me and pointed as I drove off.
Cost was about 6 colón to get in and gets you 2 drinks. Dances were also 6 colón or 12 if you get a lady drink also. Saw a question in forum about bringing dates. I saw a few couples there and even a lesbian couple. 1 girl mentioned 1/2 hour for 37 colón. The skinny younger girls did not show up till after 12 and were scooped up fast and stayed busy.

Veterans. Coming back for s short visit from 14-18 Jan. In your opinion will the ladies have returned from the holidays and the quality be better in San Jose or Jaco that week.

Thanks.Based on my experience over the past few years, the quality is always better in Jaco. And if the Del Rey is closed now, that will only accelerate the trend.
