Might decide to retire in DR. Some beach city not Santo Domingo etc. Question is how much income retirement do we need for a couple to live comfortably:
- 2 or 3 Bedroom condo or villa. Air conditioned rooms.
- maybe a used car: Toyota corolla or a smaller car. Not much driving.
- eating out in restaurants once a week.
Is a $4 k income a month enough? Or do we need to budget $6 k?

30 (H+F+T+E)/ L.
H = average daily rate for a midrange hotel room.
F = average daily cost for 3 meals / person in local restaurants.
T = daily transportation costs.
E = entertainment expense, daily average.
L = lifestyle expectations. If you plan on a moderate lifestyle, comfort but minimal luxury, L=3. If you want luxury without extravagance, L=2. If you want to be the envy of the neighborhood, L=1.
Here's the tricky part. H, F, E and T are based on your standards. What levels of each are you happy with?
Using my standards, $50 for hotel, $25 for food $5 for transportation and $30 for entertainment, I get $1100, $1650 and $3300 per month.
Those numbers are low, but I don't need much. If possible, I prefer to walk or ride a bike. I don't need 3 chicas a day, 3 per week are fine, and I can feed and entertain myself.
To get your own estimate just figure your comfort zone. Figure car rental for a compact plus insurance, figure out the hotel you could comfortably spend 10 days at and add in the costs of the restaurants you would eat at on vacation. For entertainment figure what you do at home, not what you do on vacation.
In my research for cities to live in the future it's best for you to maybe spend a month living in different locations to develop a feel for what that city has to offer. Also I wouldn't take any advice from anyone who doesn't live there and only visits twice a year. Talk to expats living there and buy them a beer while you pick their minds on everything from transportation to health insurance.
I also wouldn't make a beach a priority because most places in the DR are within 90 minutes to a beach. The bigger cities offer better amenities like movie theaters, cultural events and better airports but you also get traffic and noise. The smaller Campo towns offer simple living and tranquility but might forsake common necessities like hot water.

However health care, as my learned colleague has pointed out is an area where expenses could add up. However you can buy health insurance in the DR relatively cheaply compared to the US.

Converting all my $$$ to DOP was a wrong move as the tourist card guy takes only USD. So I had to go back, change pesos to USD for him.
I had found a driver's phone number over the net, he asked me to whatsapp him with details of my flight and my selfie. I offered him DOP500 prior to Europa, and he asked for DOP750 over text messages, I was good with that. If anyone wants his number, PM me and negotiate the cost with him ahead of time.

Ok, I can share more for what it is worth.Along with your previous post, a good report, and covers a lot of the practical questions visitors have.
Exchange, tourist cards, motos, airport taxi, massages and extra room for mongering, and Facebook contacts.
Your airport airport taxi is a good deal (the posted rates are $25.00 US, and that's what a lot of hotel taxis will ask).
Motos are marginally safer if you let someone else drive, and it's much less hassle. Pooter always advises to pick and older guy, he's managed to stay alive longer. LOL.
Massage info is good too. I never tried a massage down there, but am often tempted as I go by.
The old Caly hotel is a little off the beaten track for a mongering room. It's a long walk there, and a long walk back, and unless the puta is hot, and the weather not, you might change your mind on the way there. I am entering midlife and thinking about retirement. Never too late to plan for that. I was only there two weeks, so my estimates could not be accurate, but given you are looking at costing on a theoretical level, here is my estimation. It is on higher end intentionally. I do have big questions on the security, the only available option of P4P and quality.
The AirBnB place I stayed with a large pool, 24 HR security, spacious one bed room, within less than a mile to all things important is going for $500 a month for rent.
An experienced cook told me he earns $450 a month, so if you have someone to cook for you every alternate day the cook should be $350 and groceries $250 making it $600. I am on the higher end as a pound of chicken / meat is only $3/$4 if my memory is right. For drinks, I would add $250 assuming you have taste for something higher end.
I think 10 chica sessions a month is realistic, so I would say $500, plus four sessions of once a week all nighter for $400. I realize 14 sessions every month is a lot, but then fuck it, there is one life to live.
I was told by the pharmacy lady in the metro bus terminal pharmacy, $250 a month can get good medical insurance. I have not seen a place that within 2-3 walking blocks have, Italian, French, Austrian / German and English (ahem, fish and chips) food. For New Garden this is business as usual. This happens all the time and they know how to deal with it. It is, regrettably, the most common scam played on us. When it comes time to pay chicas I get dressed and walk out of the room. Once they are outside I close the door behind them and pay up. When they start to argue I just walk away. If they follow I go to security and complain and it is in their hands. I just walk out into the streets or back into my room. If you are really generous tip security for their help. The chicas forget in two or three days, and even if she wanted to fulfill her threat we all have to go home sometime and not bump into her for a while.
Now if they do not leave the room just try to convince them or call security to escort them out.
I just had a similar experience. I asked for BBBJ for DOP 500. Well, we did so much in bed that I was willing to pay her DOP 1500. Well, sure enough, she jumped to DOP 2000. It's easy to tell other guys what they should do, but when you are actually in the situation, invested and committed in money and time, and you are looking for some good lovin', you usually act as a restaurant patron, and see what's cookin and how it's cooked. If you rush into the kitchen as soon as you get into the place and start barking orders, you won't get satisfaction anyway.

Who has confirmed this? Do you have the name of the man? Do you have the names of any of the girls? Do you have a link to the full story? Thanks in advance, and please check out my trip reports for Berlin and Medellin.If you land at 3 pm you're probably going to miss the 4 pm bus to Sosua on Metro, but Caribe tours has a 5, 6 and 7 pm bus. Caribe drops a little ways outside of Sosua, so you'll need a cab, or a moto if you don't have much luggage.
Depending on your time in The DR you might want to stick in SD and catch the first Metro bus to Sosua in the morning.
One suggestion. Bring a light jacket for the bus. They keep the A / see cranked.

I counted the time from the point of me headed towards semana. If you have plans to take a bus to your destination. I will fly into Santiago if I'm going to sosua. Or take car for the hour and a half Drive. I would take a bus only if I can get there by the afternoon. A lot of flights come in red eye from my location. Arriving in Santiago after 7 can be a problem. The last bus leaves at 9 headed towards the Sue. A cab can run you between 75 + 125. But it's worth it if you're short on time. If I'm good on time I fly into Santo Domingo. Bus it or rent a car. Depending on my plans to the East.

In some cases, security guards have a side hustle of getting small kickbacks from the chicas in exchange for them having access to coming on the property.
So a chica might be able to persuade a security guard (with money or ass) to allow her back on the property, especially if she is with a different customer. Many security guards play both sides. They may appear to have the mongers back as a customer of the hotel, but the other reality is they know chicas have to make money by any means necessary. Quite often locals tend to have more empathy towards the chicas (even if they are wrong) than a "rich" gringo who THEY believe can afford an "insignificant" loss or disappointment.
In other words, I don't think hotel security care that much about a dude who was bamboozled by a chica over a few pesos. In that scenario it's his word (possibly drunk word) over hers (the poor chica trying to feed her family). I neglected to mention, that some chicas may have police ready to respond, not to help the monger but to possibly extort him for more pesos in order to make the problem go away. It would be helpful to know what is meant by the hotel being strict? For what infractions? For instance. If a chica flips the script on the price, and in her upset claims she's owed more money, is that enough to get her banned from a hotel? Her upset may seem legit to the average individual trying to sort things out.

In other words, I don't think hotel security care that much about a dude who was bamboozled by a chica over a few pesos. In that scenario it's his word (possibly drunk word) over hers (the poor chica trying to feed her family). I neglected to mention, that some chicas may have police ready to respond, not to help the monger but to possibly extort him for more pesos in order to make the problem go away. Some police use their response as an opportunity to make money.

They all live there full time and on different parts of the island, so they will have different perspectives. Also, if you scroll back a few pages or so you will see there was another discussion on this topic about someone wanting to live in Cabarete.
If anything, there is an entire expat community on DR1 (the message forum section). Just don't go there asking mongering questions because it is not a hobby-discussion-type forum.

DR is almost the opposite to the United States where anybody with anyone with (say) a quarter African ancestry is considered "black". In the DR, Dominicans who are considered "black" (though they would use the words "moreno / a" or "prieto / a") are a relatively small minority. Most Dominicans are various shades of "indio / a". The delusion was that their darker skin color came from Native American ancestry. (ln fact less than 2% does).
Most real "blacks" in the DR are Haitian or of Haitian parentage (two smallish areas excepted.) Most Haitians speak Haitian Creole. Is this the lingo you claim to speak? Not to worry, once you are living here you can learn it relatively easily. A helluvalot easier than learning Thai, and easier still if you speak French, on which it is based. I have been living with a Haitian girl for over five years and we converse in my pitiful Spanish and her rather limited Spanish. One of the reasons I became attracted to Haitian girls is that they spoke Spanish slowly and with only basic grammar and vocabulary so it was easier to understand.
Many of my ex-pat friends here have converted wholly or largely to Haitian chicas as with years of experience they have come to appreciate the advantages. If you like black girls (and I mean what is considered "black"on this island), you may do the same.

US $2500 per month is ample to live very comfortably here. If you have more and spend more, do not make it obvious to locals, including your girlfriends. If you did want to break things off you can easily afford to pay "severance pay" which would be a windfall for her, but small change to you. The only affair of mine that did not die a natural death, I gave her ten thousand pesos (then worth US $300) to get her teeth done (after six months of the best sex of my life) and she was more than happy. I did not see her again for a year or so, when our paths crossed on Sosua beach. She flashed her pearly whites in appreciation and went on her way.
My first advice is to take a couple of long vacations here (say three months each) and do not spend them in mongering haunts. Try to get a feel for "normal" life here and talk to as many resident ex-pats as possible.

I think you should start first with some mongering trips and see if you like mongering in the DR. Then graduate to spending more time exploring the Island and also see if you continue to like the country, the people, and culture. The last thing to do is to spend a couple of months living in the DR before making an abrupt decision to retire there. After experiencing a few months living there, you will know the answer to all those questions you have.

How do you know I'm not going to? But the point of this thread, as stated at the top of the page is "Sousa Reports", a place where we can read reports about trips to Sousa. If we can't read trip reports, what is the point of this thread?

The cost is 50 pesos each way. You have to sit with locals but I enjoy the rides. It takes 15 to 20 minutes for the trips. The cars do not make many stops.I've seen rthe cars lines up. Correct me if I'm wrong but all of the cars that run between Sosua and Pto Pta have red signs on top of the car and the ones that run between Sosua and Cabarete have yellow ones, easy to differentiate.When I was using the Pto Pta run frequently, day and night, the Pto Pta publicos used to have yellow (illuminated) signs with the word "Nocturno" after dark (when the price went up 5 pesos).
I never worked out if the drivers just switched the signs or whether this was a different set of drivers and vehicles for the "after-dark" business.
Not sure if that still applies or whether it ever applied for the Cabarete route. But you cannot go wrong. They never use each others "paradas" (cab-ranks) and they are not allowed to work each other's routes as they have to pay a substantial fee for the franchise.
While we are on the subject, I wonder if anyone can enlighten me? I have said they will make a small detour for a propina. The most common detour coming from Pto Pta is through the centre of Montellano on request. I am not sure if they charge extra to do that? I have ridden that route a thousand times or more, and about 10% of the time they make that detour, so I have seen it at least 100 times. I have obviously made the return trip from Sosua to Puerto Plata a thousand or more times, but never once experienced a detour through Montellano going in that direction. Why is that?

Hot as shit down there. Sun is powerful during the day. Cools off nicely at night.
The election fucked up the game a little bit. 95% of everything, and I do mean everything was closed. Grocery stores, liquor stores, all the clubs, all the businesses. All closed. You know what dee latin looks like at night when the rest of the strip is jumping? Imagine the entire strip looking like dee latin. I got in on Saturday night, and my local contacts told me that everything would be shut down from 6 pm Saturday to 6 pm Sunday, and that everyone had the day off for the election on Sunday. Still a few hoes out, but I would venture to guess not more than 25-50 tops. Gogo and E warned in the past that changes in sosua should have you keep some girls on file, and this was one of those times. Girls would come if you called, but wouldn't come out otherwise. Cops and military riding up and down the street all night to make sure businesses were closed.
I see Rocky's has a sign out front with rates for short stays. I'm not sure if this was always the case, but sharing in case it's useful to anyone else. Sure beats having to go to dulce secreto.

I heard in advance how rough Immigration and Customs officials were at POP with mongers and tourists, so I looked into alternatives. I flew round-trip to Santiago (STI) via American Airlines and saved about $300 on the airfare by not flying round-trip into POP. A taxi from STI to Sosua was $90 and took an hour. Immigration and Customs were so laid-back at STI it was almost as if they weren't there.

The official name for the toll road is La Autopista del Nordeste (www.autopistasdelnordeste.com). Picture hounds can goto the website and see all you would like about that portion of the route. The photos are accurate (having seen them myself). There are three booths where you pay a toll of 56,181 & 213 DOP respectively.
After the first booth, but before the second there is a brand new Texaco fueling station. It's very modern with a convenience store and Santo Domingo coffee shop attached. Looks just like anything that I've seen within the developed countries I've visited in the past. It's a very expensive facility that is well manicured and maintained. Very nice choice Mr. GoGo. I like it! We make a quick pit stop where I've got to have my cup of coffee. There is also business inside where you can get a bite to eat freshly prepared for you. Sandwiches and other Dominican fast foods are available. I enter the coffee shop and the chica behind the counter is smoking hot. Even with that unisex uniform corporations like to drape on their female employees, I can tell she has a banging body. He has perfect make up and salon quality nails. She hits me with English. Which gives me the opener to flirt. Complement her on language skills, ask her where she learned it and we're off. It's not busy in there right now and she's open to giving a brother a little conversation. I ask her to switch to Spanish to help a brother learn more. The officer tells us to enjoy our trip and waves us through. Got to love it! Mr. GoGo has played the "dumb gringo" role perfectly and given an Oscar nominating performance to boot. The trip continues without incident. We out the last booth and we run out of island. There is nothing but ocean dead ahead. I don't which way we need go but we got to make a turn because we've run out of island.
We arrive at the Europa hotel. Lot's of intel about this place from previously reported recon in this section and the personal experience of Mr. GoGo. Credit goes to the men in the arena. The hotel bar (Romanitas) has a hot blonde working behind it now and there are a few hotties sitting there killing time. Mr. GoGo heads over to greet the chicas. They wave me over. I'm like nah. Mr. GoGo is holding court. Enjoy him. I'm headed inside to check in and it goes without incident. We make plans to rendezvous in 15 minutes for an exploratory mission to recon the area so I can learn my way around. The room is nice. Big enough to play catch in. And is exactly as advertised. Only negative I see to the place is that it's not freak party certified. But since this is my first trip to The Sue, I'm not trying to roll like that anyway.
I meet Mr. GoGo in the lobby and we head out on foot. Walking down the street at some point we hang a right and pass another Sue fixture called the Terra Linda Hotel. Tells me they have nice pool and asked me if I wanted to go see it. No need. It can't be that impressive. I'm from Vegas were billionaires spend 10's of millions on their pools to impress visitors. If's not an infinity pool then I don't need to see it. We finish the loop. Says that's the quick and dirty tour of The Sue and we head to the beach.
Attention everyone: And we're walking. A few working girls are on the stroll. They have a garden tool look. We continue our walk down the beach until we arrive at Big Mama's. This is Mr. GoGo's spot. He orders his drink I order some natural juice and we chill. I pull out the professional SLR for some pictures only to discover my telephoto lens is cracked. How the fuck did that happen? Luckily for me I had a UV filter on it and the main glass is fine. I remembered the advice my father gave me as a kid to always keep a UV filter on your lenses because if bad things happen you loose the UV filter first but it will save your lens. No truer words were spoken in this case. I take a few pictures but I'm not really feeling the view and just sit down to enjoy my juice. We are just chilling taking in the scene. The garden tools are on the stroll, tourists, touts, vendors, women offering manicure, pedicure services the total plethora of sights, sounds and experiences.
We're hungry now and we have reversed course on the beach. My thoughts are the BBQ joint. And Mr. GoGo concurs. The BBQ joint on the beach it is. We sit down at a table that gives a ringside seat the to circus at The Sue beach. Menus come and I order ribs and Mr. GoGo orders chicken. My harem feeds me a lot of chicken so I am really looking forward to the change. And food at the BBQ joint does not disappoint. The ribs are good along with the grilled potatoes and mixed vegetables. This is working for me. But I'm wishing I had of ordered the half slab instead of the quarter slab they are that good. But after talking bad about those who are obese, I'm determined to set a good example by getting back down to my BMI weight. I'm four pounds away and closing in. Not bad for an old man relatively speaking. Late lunch is finished. Settled up with the BBQ joint. And we're off again. Headed down the beach back to the hotel. It's time to rest up before heading out again tonight.

So, once again we are on the lookout for a place to eat. Side note about Bourbon Street, that place is laid out. But during our trip every time we passed the place, it didn't have more than three customers in it. There was more staff than clientele. Maybe it was weather related. It was overcast skies and lots of rain. Everything was slow that weekend. It was good for me. Made it easy to get a lay of the land, sense and feel of the vibe in The Sue. We keep walking down the main drag on the hunt for food. I'm feeling Morua Mai. Never been there before but I liked the look and feel of the place. Turns out that is one of Mr. GoGo favorite places. We are in agreement. On approach and cleared to land.
The place is empty. When we arrive we are the only customers in the place. It is really slow here and in The Sue in general. The weather is really keeping the activity down but I actually like it like this. Morua Mai has the lounge / chill music genre going. I recognize some of the sounds being played on the track. I'm waiting to hear something from one the greatest: Thievery Corporation, but I never do. Still, I'm enjoying the music anyway. It's the perfect feel. Menus arrive and prices are reasonable. I put in my order. Chicken Parmesan, side of pasta with mixed vegetables. Plates hit the table. I like what I see. Let's see how it tastes. Try everything on my plate and it is indeed good. Wow! Nice evening, good food, good music, good company, I'm certain I would be enjoying some good wine if I could drink. Damn this is killing me. Check comes and we settle up once again. Dinner is a wrap. In the can so to speak and we're off. Seek and destroy mission. My missile with the moisture seeking warhead is in seek mode. Back on station and visually looking for targets.
We are walking down the main drag back towards the hotel Europa. Hang a left and there is an interesting prospect across the street. "Tally ho"! I head over talk to her. Up close she is nothing to look at. So, in my mind I'll do a brief engagement and break off. She's Haitian and after some small talk in Spanish, because she speaks four languages. I let her know I might be back to see her later. She says, why not now. I say because it's early. She say no it's because you are looking for a Dominican. That makes me want to go off. I learned Hotel Plaza Europa has nice rooms, is chica friendly and requires chicas to give up their cedulla to enter.
I learned the BBQ place at the beach has good food as does Morua Mai. Finding a good place to eat is always pretty high on my list of priorities.
I learned that Merengue is a good spot to find chicas, but they come at a higher price. I also learned the rates are negotiable, something every noob should know.
I learned about the tolls, driving time and amenities available on the toll road from Santo Domingo.
I learned about the little bar in front of Hotel Plaza Europa, which I think is one of the better places in Sosua to have a cold drink and relax.
I learned the Terra Linda Hotel has a nice pool, not as important to me, but probably good information for some.

I just asked two Colombians, and they corrected me. They didn't recognize "quejica" or "estas hecho un quejica".
They insisted its: "Has vuelto quejon(a)".

But it still sounds good. Yes, we must have checked the word from the same place. Wasn't sure if it is same form in masculine and feminine.
