the things we take for granted (iphones, ipads, fancy watches, and expensive clothes) are much more difficult for the average dominican to get.it may be true that those are difficult to get for some. but that is not "our" problem if it is. further, those things are not necessities to begin with. definitely not needed for a dominican to survive. so why should anyone else be concerned over the difficulty of dominicans unable to get those things?
the waitress at the place i have breakfast at in sosua sat down with me when she saw my iphone 5s and we started calculating. she said she would have to work 4 months without buying so much as a piece if chewing gum it be able to buy the 5s.for the most part any local that feels the need to tell me their tale of woe in not being able to afford an iphone 5s, i wouldn't go too far entertaining that conversation. frankly it's not my concern if some local can't buy an iphone 5s. an iphone is not necessary for survival.
years back, i was married to a dominican and every time we visited her family in santiago her brother would beg and plead endlessly for me to leave him my sneakers, my jeans, my watch, my underwear, everything. my wife (at the time) asked me to leave as much as i could to him because it was easy for me to get the stuff back home, but it was difficult to impossible for him to get them in the dr. so i always returned home with an empty suitcase.i dated a dominican from the us whose home town was in haina, never did any of her family or friends beg or ask anything from me or her when i visited. nor did any of them behave like or indicate that we were rubbing wealth in their faces just because we had nice things. if were talking basics here, sneakers, jeans, and underwear, those things are not impossible to get. now if you are talking about him being enamored with name brand or hard to get stuff, then i can see your point to a certain extent.
but then name brand or specialty clothing or watches arent necessities. i don't know how old the brother was, but if he was old enough he should have been encouraged to go out and find work, instead of begging. that is one of the things that is assbackwards with enough families now. people accepting complacency, laziness, encouraging and condoning begging. personally i wouldn't want no woman putting me on the spot like that with a begging relative, and me having to give up my own stuff that i brought for vacation. if my woman wants to do something for her brother, then we can talk about it. next time she can plan to bring a care package for him. if she wants to leave her own stuff behind thats on her. but i aint allowing no woman to put me on the spot just because her family is begging. he aint going to die if he don't get my stuff before i leave. he'll live. btw you must not have been too accepting of giving up your stuff, since he had to beg and plead endlessly for it? if you had no problem with it, all he would have had to do is ask, and you would willingly part with your stuff without him having to beg endlessly.
whenever i am in a place with a high rate of poverty and crime (usually where pussy is for sale at reasonable prices) , i try to keep a low profile. i don't rub my wealth in anybody's face. i let the guys with the ipads and iphones and rolex watches become the targets.dominicans arent stupid. they know we arent from there. they know we paid hundreds of dollars for airfare, for our hotels and were spending hundreds of dollars on pussy and in places many dominicans don't go regularly to buy food and drink. they know you probably have a few hundred or even a few thousand dollars locked up in your safe in your spot. how exactly is anybody keeping a low profile with all of that going on? simply by not using an expensive phone, ipad, not wearing expensive jewelry etc. how are you letting somebody else become targets but you arent one yourself?
if anyone were to get with the wrong company, they will find out real quick. thieves may make you go in your safe ,take your iphone5s and your money. just ask the dude who was robbed at tradewinds a couple of months ago. and if you encounter individuals as poor as your ex brother in law, they will probably take your clothes too. they don't have to know what you got hidden in or out in the open. they readily assume because you arent from there that you have something valuable that they find valuable. one may think they are keeping a low profile. but like i said, dominicans aint stupid. the only reason a person may go unrep001hed while on vacation, isn't because he is keeping a low profile, or because dominicans are respecting him because he aint rubbing his wealth in somebodys face, it's because somebody with criminal intent just has not taken the initiative to go after you. one can get set up very easily if a thief is inclined, and the crime doesnt have to happen in a common place. it can happen anywhere.
my advice is sound and it works well for me. i don't suffer, i dress casual, and i don't feel any inconvenience when i travel. i advise people who are new to any area to leave the luxury gadgets (yes an iphone is a luxury gadget as 10 years ago there were no ipads or iphones yet business still took place) at home or locked in the hotel safe until they are comfortable with the area and can take a few more liberties. any other advise would be reckless.i don't think there is anything wrong with that advice. my take isn't necessarily an advisement regarding if one should or shouldn't bring their gadgets. it was more of a testimony and an observation of what goes on every day in sosua and in the dr with individuals all over using their equipment in restaurants, on the beach, and anywhere they feel comfortable. and in doing so, it doesn't appear any of these folks are assuming they are rubbing wealth in anyones face. that seems to be entirely your own perspective/sensitivity on the issue. you are correct how you operate has worked for you. and at the same time, it apparently has worked for most people who are uninhibited with those concerns, and enjoy the use of their stuff without any problems with their safety or concern that they are rubbing wealth in anyones face.

Sorry, it sounded to me like the tone of her messages was intended to be ironic, given that you can hardly get anything for 1000 pesos in the DR-that is about 23 dollars. Is she really that grateful? Maybe I am wrong and she was sincere, in which case she is incredibly dumb too.
The newbie mistake is to engage a chica for all night if you don't know whether she is really into you. The commonest newbie complaint on these boards is that a chica was engaged for all night and then wants to split early. But what I didn't see is your explanation or perspective of why mongers, especially 1st timers should lock up or not bring their gadgets out? Especially since it's understood that crime is everywhere. What does a 1st timer lack that makes him more vulnerable than anybody else just because he is using a phone or laptop in a restaurant or at the beach? Not merely stating how one does things, but to understand that perspective in it's entirety. Not just say well this is how I do things, and then clam up. In your learning process, you just might want to know how others got to the point of being comfortable with using their gadgets without feeling like you. Moreover, not every newbie will be uncomfortable with using their gadgets in public just because they are new. My advice and perspective is based on my experiences, things I have seen, and common sense that I have acquired over the years. I don't know what other perspective I can give you or anyone else besides what I have seen and experienced.
I try to share what I have seen and learned over the years to benefit others who are beginning their travels. I don't want them to go through some of the things I have seen other guys go through over the years, and in many places.
Growing up in a bad (and poor) neighborhood, I would observe what I considered to be regular working people stepping out of the subway and immediately get relieved of their watches, handbags, and purses. It was usually the ones that looked like easy targets (women, older people, disabled) , and usually never young fit men who looked like they could defend themselves or make it difficult for the thieves. The people I saw getting robbed usually had expensive watches in plain view, or expensive looking handbags, and they were never aware of their surroundings. I saw people just walk up behind them, snatch the purse or watch, and run in the other direction. By the time the person realized they had gotten robbed and looked back, the thief was half way down the block.
On the subways in New York City they constantly announce that you should be aware of pickpockets, and should not display cell phones or other electronic devices while on the train.
In many areas around the world, I would not hesitate to use my iPhone, iPad, or other device. It is true that I could get robbed anywhere, including right in front of my house. But the chances are even greater if you advertise the things you have.
It is true what you say. I have been fortunate and have not come across a person that was desperate enough to rob me, and it might happen one day. But when I travel to places such as Sosua, parts of Bangkok, Pattaya, places in Mexico, or heck, even places right in New York, I try not to be the easy target. Others can do that if they so wish. If that is being sarcastic, then I am sarcastic. If I display an iPhone, they know I have an iPhone to steal. If I wear an expensive watch, they know there is an expensive watch to steal. If I don't display anything, then there is a chance that they have to force me to open my hotel safe. When I open it, there is a chance that there is a passport, a credit card, and nothing more. Then they have to squeeze to try to extract more from me. The chances of getting caught are greater the longer they stay with me. If they can just snatch my phone or gold chain and disappear, it is much better for them.
In my 6 days in Sosua I witnessed a person getting his gold chain snatched during the day and away from the strip, I witnessed a monger getting into an argument with the politur and a chica because of a disagreement on the amount he should pay her (I don't think it went his way, and he should have just paid what they agreed and left it as that) , and I was part of a group that was almost taken for a ride by the guy that collects the fares on the publico. He wanted 100 pesos each for a 35 peso ride. I gave him 35 pesos and walked away.
There are mongers who travel with the minimal amount of information about places. They get there and try to wing it. My advice is written with them in mind. I want them to protect themselves. Then when they feel more comfortable, they can take more chances.
You want to dissect every comment I post that you don't agree with, you can't seem to understand why I advise what I advise, and you seem to be surprised when I reply with what appears to you as sarcasm after you continually dissect my posts. Yet when Mr. E posted that he gives the cashier his wallet and tells her to take what he owes her you make no comment.
I appreciate your posts. I feel they are intelligent, well written, and usually full of information.
I don't know what you have against my posts, but believe me, all I am trying to do is help the new guys.

After getting gas 4 times I knew how much I needed to get to the 3/4 tank mark where I had to turn the car in. I pulled up and asked for 500 on regular. I went into the trunk to change clothes while the guy was pumping my gas. He asked if I would give him the flip flops that I had on as a gift. WTF? Then I quickly looked at the pump and it was stopped at 300. I was in such a hurry and so busy changing clothes that I didn't look at it again until I was back in the car. By then it had been reset to 0. After I drove off and the fuel gauge didn't move to where I knew it should have, I realized what had happened. That mf got me for 200 pesos. I had to pay Budget $14 for 1/8 tank of gas.

Correct! There is no bad info. This board is so much better for info (which most of us appreciate) then any other venue for our hobby. I try to use the military jargon so I can be understood, but sometimes I slip up. The Italian restaurant next to The British pub is an excellent Italian restaurant I found out last night. I went there around 9.30 PM, after dropping off a female on the way back to Pto Pta. I had bruschetta with tomato, basil and mozzarella as starters, a leafy salad with pungent arugula, tomato, onion and romaine lettuce and to top off, a plate of home made tagliatelle in a cream sauce with mushrooms and Italian sausage, washed down with mezzo litro de vino rosso. I finished it with an espresso which again was very good. The bill was 1070 pesos which might be considered high by local standard for a single meal but to me, it was worth it outside of flying to Italy. Speaking of it, the Schnitzel meal at the Austrian place the night before was priced similarly. Marco the owner, is from Bologna, nice guy. He even lent me his glasses as I forgot them at my place. I would have tried the fish or the meat as the main course but did not have room anymore. Heartily recommend the place to anyone who enjoys Italian food. I thought it is way better than elefante rosso which is located almost across. I shared the table (because I was eating alone at a place that could sit six) with a Greek guy and a Danish woman and the conversation was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed the solo night as I chomped on my cigar (180 pesos) bought at the German cigar store on my way out of town for the night. As I was strolling along back to my car. Several women wanted to strike conversation. I thought one was nice with a sense of humor and after exchanging several sentences, she concluded I was a " Chileno". Made me crack up, a dark skinned Indian for a (mostly white) Chilean! The schools are doing a good job.

So here we are now, you claiming I was dissecting your posts and disagreeing with you. Since you didn't give me the feedback I asked from the very beginning, you left me no choice but to respond to what you posted even though it didn't have jack to do with what I asked. I even advised you later that you didn't answer what I initially asked, to show you how we got off track. And you didn't even pick that up. You seemed to take it all as an attack. Thats why I brought out that many folks new or vets are obviously quite comfortable having those things out in public, and they may not have a problem paying for a beer with a $2000 note. I'm willing to bet there are many guys here who have taken advantage of the Global Online Enrollment System (GOES ). If not here is some info for ya. As a member you are entitled to use the DIY Global Entry kiosks in the customs area. While most folks after an international flight are gathering on the long lines in customs, a GE member can go straight to one of the short lines where they have several kiosks. You scan your passport, get a photo snapped and verify your fingerprints instantly. In addition, you don't have to fill out the PAPER declaration form that they give you on the plane when returning from an international flight. That declaration info is completed on the kiosk machine. Most major airports participate in the program. The cost is $100 and your enrollment is good for 5yrs.
In addition, a member of Global Entry, also entitles you to participate in the TSA pre-screening program. If you are a GE member you may not have to go for an interview at the TSA PS office, and won't have to pay any additional money. The $100 you paid for the GOES system covers you for the TSA pre screen. What is TSA pre-screen? You ever go to your airport in the states, and in the departure area you see some individuals directed to a very short line? Maybe you were randomly selected to go. It may have been the TSA pre-screen line. There, you don't have to remove shoes, your laptop from your bag, light jackets / outerwear, or belt. There may be other things they may allow to stay on your person. But the real benefit is you won't be on those long ass lines shuffling along with everybody else, especially behind a family with a bunch of children and a stroller. Your TSA PS line is much much shorter.
This benefit can take some stress off of someone who might be running late for their flight out. Or just a relief not to have to shuffle a few feet at a time until you finally get to be screened. And coming home from a flight. Not to be on a long ass line with multiple flights arriving at the same time? I can do without that. I currently have two international flights I booked with United. I was able to modify both itineraries and add my GE member number in the KNOWN
TRAVELER NUMBER field. Now, when I go to the airport, my boarding pass should have TSA approved. Also, some folks may be able to have their boarding passes on their devices where it can be scanned at the gate.

I do recall at JFK seeing a separate line for Global Entry members next to where every one else stands on line to drop off their declaration forms. And I also recall how long and spread out the luggage and people filled lines were just trying to get to the 2 agents accepting forms. So that's three main areas where Global Entry can help save time and inconvenience when returning or leaving. I guess the only draw back is when you are traveling with others who arent members. You still have to wait for them if you are traveling together. But that is not a problem. At least I'm free to use the restroom and make phone calls while I'm waiting for them. First off, it is a quite a process to obtain the checking account.
First, you have to open up an Individual Brokerage account.
Next you have to verify who you are to open the High Yield Investor Checking account. I did this by bringing two forms of I'd to their San Diego office.
Then you have to transfer funds or deposit into the Individual Brokerage account.
Then you transfer funds into the Checking Account. At that point Charles will send out the debit card and checks for the checking account.
Activate the debit card.
Also, let CS know your travel plans or else the card will be useless.
I used the card twice in Sosua and I understand the ATM fees from the banks will be reimbursed at the end of the month.
It is quite a process, but I'm happy with CS already.

I got my account opened, but it is a pain in the ass to fund it. I tried using the app as a test, to depost a $50.00 rewards check from Citibamk. So far it's taken 7 days and the fucker is not cleared yet. Transferring money in from a linked checking account seems to be about the quickest and that still runs 5 days to completely clear. Next I'm going to try taking cash to a Schwab office and see if I can deposit that into the brokerage account, then transfer it to checking. It took a good month to get it all set up.
There is no minimum balance required. The $2500.00 minimum statement is wrong. It takes Wells Fargo one day to clear a much larger check deposited with the app. Why the fuck can't Chuck do that. It's going to take me three months just to fully fund the account so I can use it twice during the week.
After having endured this slow toture I hope it's worth it.

Flight was out of SAN to POP on AA for $750 and change. Flights were pretty much on time and with no issues. I really hate the red eye flight, but I keep abusing this old depleted body for some reason.
Hotel:
For the fourth time, I stayed at Casa Cayena. Wilfried met me at the airport; as usual. Casa Cayena also has a group cash rate; which is $12 cheaper than the regular rate. The place is off the main road, kind of tucked in the back towards the semi private beach. The place is extremely quiet and well kept. Wilfried is now offering breakfast and dinner included in the room rate. I only ate breakfast there twice, but I did have dinner on four nights. The Chicken Cordon Bleu was excellent!
Room security was never an issue. I left out my laptop and surface pad daily without any issuers. I think this is the only hotel where I hug the housekeepers. The entire staff is professional and overall outstanding. I abused the pool almost every evening. I will continue to stay there.

I got lazy and just exchanged money at the hotel, the rate was 42+ change. The rest of the time I abused the ATM machines and vice-versa.

I used to be a loyal kayak user but recently I've switched over to this site http://www.itasoftware.com To use it on your phone you have to download the app and the app isn't as flexible. I would check it out on your laptop first. I used it to find a flight from a small Midwest airport, to MIA to PP for under $700 which I consider a good deal since I'm nowhere near a major hub.
I must be going a different way than everybody else. Where is this dirt road that you mentioned? In countless drives I have never gone on a dirt road. Same when someone was saying last week that they took the toll road then went through the mountains. I have never been through any mountains and I took that same new toll road last week. A wingman of mine mentioned some mountains to get to go through Playa something or other one time but I wouldn't know that way if you held a gun to my head.Going toward Sosua about 3 to 5 miles past field of dreams the first little place you come to you take a right hand turn and it is straight all the way to Santiago.

1st thing upon arrival to Puerto Plata I was told by a friend that the big chief police over the region had been traded out with the big chief police from Santo Domingo so I figured the Puerto Plata area would now be doing what Boca Chica and Santo Domingo area had been doing forever and that is harassing tourist for a dollar but I was wrong nothing seem to be any different there in Puerto Plata. They are a lot of traffic in and around Boca Chica but if you get caught at a red light where police are stationed they will most likely be chatting with you about something for me it was a seat belt in which I tried to tip my way out of a ticket but the police said they did not work that way any more that he was giving me a ticket. Fast forwarded to later that night and a tip is all the police wanted from me for a small fuck up in Boca Chica. If the police would just ask straight up or a few bucks it would not be a big deal but the way they try to scare the fuck out of you by saying they are going to have to take the matter to the police station is a big deal to me when the whole thing was just about a propina anyway.

I have been to Cartagena, Cali, Popayan, and Bogota once, and Medellin 4 times. The women in Colombia are the most beautiful on the planet, especially in Medellin, however Colombia is not a safe place for gringos, especially those with blond hair and blue eyes. The country has changed over the years but several places are very dangerous. In downtown Medellin it's not a good idea to be walking the streets after dark. You have to understand that tourism is something new in Colombia.
So why do I prefer the DR over Colombia? I need to have activities to do besides banging women 24/7. In Medellin as an example the places to stay close to where most of the action is very limited to flea bag hotels where as in Sosua you have a whole range of options. In Sosua I have a lot of daytime activities I can do that include the beach, surfing, kayaking, and swimming along with hiking, etc. There's not much to do in Medellin after a few days of seeing the City. Medellin does have some cultural things to do but that's not for me. I have friends that love Medellin, but they are there to bang the women 24/7. It's all a matter of personal preference / style and if you haven't been to Colombia I do recommend you go at least once to Medellin and decide for yourself if you want to return. They drink differently also; you order bottles and the establishment supplies chaser (at a cost) and free ice. The girls stop buy and you pour them a drink. Most establishments that cater to Colombians rarely serve single drinks like rum and coke.
In Medellin you start looking for ugly women because they are so rare to see.

I've been all around the island and even stayed with some of my homeboys from NYC who still have family in the DR in various small towns. I was in Puerto Plata / Sosua 3 weeks ago and I am considering a move there along with Santiago or Santo Domingo. I'll be in Medellin in 3 weeks and I'm considering a relocation later this year to Cali or Medellin as well.
That being said, I enjoy Colombia for many of the reasons you mentioned but never found a lack of things to do. I cannot comment on Bogota as I was only there for a day, but what I can tell you, Medellin, in my opinion, has the best selection of venues and prices ranging from street scenes, massage parlors, casa's, bars, strip clubs, etc.

For instance I would compare Sosua's old La Passion to a place called Dr. Amor in Cali. http://www.clinicadoctoramor.com/ Whereas guys were paying what $60 in La Passion, at Dr. Amor you would pay $30 for way better chicks IMHO. Then there are also places like Cristal in Puerto Plata. To me those are clip joints. You walk in and have to give up $50 for two drinks and pay the house $80 for the girl to leave with you, then pay the girl a fee on top of that. There are other casas where you pay $1 / minute. There are places like the high end brothels in Santo Domingo. Then there is an area like Santa Fe in Bogota that is a neighborhood full of bars, casas, and street walkers. You pay $5 for the room and whatever you negotiate to the girl. Usually for me $10. Then you can ask the girl how much if I was to want you to come with me for all night sometime. I have never had a problem getting them to agree to $50, but for all night stuff I am with non-pros instead. Or you can go to Cartagena (the most expensive city in Colombia besides San Andres island) to La Dolce Vida (just like Classicos) and the girls will want $100 and up for all night. Also, you can go on many websites where girls advertise themselves. You will see many for $35 or $40. Then there are others where guys pay girls $300 for all night. There is no one price or one venue fits all. There is something for everybody at all price levels.

In general I am a Dominican Republic monger however next week I will be in Medellin. Colombia and the Dominican Republic are like apples and oranges they are both fruit but distinctly different. I too agree that overall Colombianas are more beautiful than Dominicanas however I prefer the Dominican Republic to Colombia. Primarily because I feel an ethnic connection to Dominicans since Hispanola was the primary port of the West African slave trade. There are plenty of Afro Colombians especially in Cartagena and Cali but not as many per capita as in the Dominican Republic.
In general (although not always) the Dominican Republic is less expensive than Colombia primarily because the airfare is more expensive. Chica prices range from La Picina casa in Cali 40, 000COP- $21. 00 to Mayorista Medellin street walkers for 20, 000COP-$10. 00 and you might have a heart attack at La Dolce Vida in Cartagena where some freelancers ask for 350, 000COP-$180. 00. Lodging and food varies with Cartagena in general being high cost due to it being the primary tourist destination in Colombia.
I have been to Medellin, Cartagena and Cali several times and I would say that Medellin gives you a cosmopolitan feel, Cartagena gives you a touristy feel and Cali gives you a rustic authentic Latin American feel. Each city is like a woman with a different personality and they need to be deal with accordingly. IMHO the Cartagena colonial city is one of the most beautiful cities in the Western Hemisphere and should be on every mongers "bucket list." The biggest turn off with Cartagena will be inflated prices the 9 that you could get in Cali at La Picina will cost you 40, 000COP but in Cartagena La DolceVida will cost you 350, 000-$180. 00. Cartagena is a great experience but be prepared to be gringo taxed.
Colombia has beaches just like the Dominican Republic however Cartagena and Santa Marta's beaches cannot touch Punta Cana's beach with sand that looks like powdered sugar and water that looks like green / blue kool aid.
I can go on and on but I will stop, the best advice is to do your research and visit each local and judge for yourself.

I saw the NY pizza place. In fact had parked the car in front. Both Frannie and I. It is Frannie who told me the pizza was pricey and not particularly good. I am not a pizza guy so it would not matter but opposite the Schnitzel palace, there is a pizzeria. I went there on Saturday with a woman. The chef and at least one woman inside were Italians. The pizza which she ate turned out to be a nice thin crust pizza, by looking at it.
I was at Sosua beach yesterday, Sunday. I saw big D's place and finally got to taste his food. The mixed platter of pork ribs and chicken was good but at 480 pesos for a small portion, I thought it was pricey. Derek (that is big D) turned out to be nice guy!Maybe because I only ordered a slice as to why mine was thick and bland. Another couple ordered a whole pizza and it looked a lot thinner than my slice. Here are the menus.
As far as Big D's, I now only order the 1/2 chicken with papas and salad. The order is big enough to feed me and two other girls at Herman's. Granted, I do not eat a lot. But the order is around 350 and well worth the cost.
I never took much stock in taking girls phone numbers because I always like new ones but I am glad I started taking them because on this trip I have called 3 girls I had last time and it has been a good thing we both knew each other a little. I met this non hooker and she would not take a ride to meet me she made me pick her up and when I did her dad and brother were there as well to meet me and get my tag number but that was good with me. When I am in the DR I am always 100% happy and never wish for a second I was somewhere else, so I have no desire to monger anywhere else, or even to monger.
I find the available DR women (and Haitian women) are bang on the demographic that I find sexually attractive, and I also find that these women perform very well in bed and are also very open to discussing sex, discussing sexual experiences and fantasies, and so on, which turns me on a lot. So Hispaniola is good for me.
I accept that if you are a guy of 60, even if reasonable looking, attractive chicas of 20 are going to have sex with you for some perceived economic benefit, so this does not bother me at all. If I am not in a long term relationship with a woman, I will give her 1000 pesos or maybe a little more for sex, but not get into exchanging cell phone numbers or Whatsapp or anything like that.

I could actually related to that from my youth and thoroughly enjoyed it. Having said that, I am curious about Peru, Columbia, Chile and Argentina. If you look carefully at the menu posted, you will see that the list of toppings is very limited. For example no mushrooms, anchovies, black olives, onions, green pepper, red peppers, fresh tomatoes, or pineapple, never mind any of the more exotic toppings like margerita (basil) or roasted garlic.
I asked for a ham and mushroom pizza, and they said it would be extra for the mushrooms and the medium pizza was almost US$20 and completely lacking in flavor with a very bland crust that seemed to need more salt. Decided to go to the DR last minute and was blown away by the price difference in pop 1000 dollars and sdq 400 so of course I took sdq and the savings paid for the rental car and all the gas for the trip. Day 6 / Wednesday:

Finally got my power adapter and a couple hours to make a report. Back at work and taking a class, so I have been really busy of late. I flew into POP from LAX via United. Flight arrived 30 minutes early. I was meeting my buddy Doc who was flying in from New Mexico. Made it through Customs smoothly. Walked over to the little shop area outside the airport and meet a cat from Detroit. The locals knew him as Chocolate. He visits every 2 or 3 months. When he found out it was my first trip to Sosua he bought me my first Presidente. He bid me good bye to caught his flight back to the states. I exchange $100. 00US and waited for Doc to arrive. When he finally arrived we jumped into a cab and made our way to Casa Cayene.
Short trip, which I thought was great. We get our rooms and I shower and change into shorts. We head out and stop by the exchange at the end of the block and exchange some cash. Off to the beach. We were hungry and I had read about Big D BBQ spot the beach, so we stopped and had lunch and some drinks. Big D was there, so sat down and converses with us while we ate lunch. His BBQ is really good!
After lunch we made our way to Rumbas and had a seat. Doc strikes up a conversation with a PYT and soon he is good to go. She called a girlfriend to come and meet me, but she was taking to long, so I told Doc I would see him back at the hotel and headed down the street to get a manicure, pedicure and 4 handed massage. Day 5 & 6.
Woke up and go and check on Doc. He is already up and packed. He is heading home today. We head to breakfast. After breakfast he ask the girl at the front desk to have the driver here by 1:00PM. 5 years ago you could get good home made food off the street for a few pesos, but now it seems all the locals get their food from restaurants. They're all eating from styrofoam containers these days.

If it's the place across the street from terra Linda, we ate there my first night. It was OK, but you must try the Terra. They have a couple dozen specials on their menu, but they'll make one up for you. I had the Pepperoni, with extra sliced tomatoes. Awesome. Its owned by italians I think. I bought a cheese pizza and me and a tout I know ate it. We both had runs the next day. My stmoach was fucked up all day the next day. His was too. He said on his motochoncho ride home he had to to stop at the hospital and take a shit LOL. Don't eat there!

In Santo Domingo, one of the best places on El Conde is Franks. In fact, I don't go anywhere else. Where is "the Franks" in Sosua?

Just a brief update on my efforts to secure my fee less Charles Schwab debit card. I opened my accounts (brokerage and checking accounts) on 4/7/14. Everything done online. After Charles Schwabs made and cleared 2 small deposits into my bank, I was able to fund my CS brokerage account (from my linked primary bank BOA) on 4/10/14. However, I had to wait until 4/15 in order to transfer those funds from the brokerage account into my CS checking account. Received my debit card today 4/21. Activated it, and subsequently notified CS of my future travel plans. Card can now be used. That process took 2 weeks. My checks should arrive any day now.
In the future if I need to put more money into my CS checking account I need to plan ahead. Because it seems to take 3 days for a transfer to appear from your linked primary bank into your brokerage account, and then another 5 days for a transfer to appear (from the brokerage account) into the CS checking account. A rep advised me (on the phone) that there is a $1, 000 US limit per day on ATM withdrawals and a $15, 000 US limit on purchases. It was a long process, but think this will be well worth it. Don't forget, this is online banking. But I must say CS customer service has been excellent thus far.
Hope this helps those who may have been interested in Charles Schwab, especially in getting a fee less debit card.

Where is "the Franks" in Sosua?IMO the best rate in Sosua can be had at Banco Providencial on Pedro Clisante. It is on the same street as Maui Mau restaurant, the small supermercado, the small farmacia. Its also diagonally across the street from Sinatras restaurant (formerly PJ's). This is where many of the street change guys go. They will have the best rate in town. The exchange guys go there, get the best rate then offer a lower rate on the street.
One drawback is I think they cator to the change guys moreso. A few times I have gone to exchange only to be told to come back later in the day. Or if you attempt to exchange lets say $1, 000 us they may tell you they can exchange less. So I always attempt a larger exchange just in case they do that. Aside from those gliches their rate will usually beat out any other place around. Bring your passport.
The exchange place next door to M&M massage in the plaza where the Orange store is, they come in 2nd as far as rates go. Sometimes there can be a small line stretching outside usually with exchange guys anxious to get in and out. Keep your place in line. Great rates and sometimes no passport was needed. Plus I never had a problem with how much I could exchange. Bring your passport just in case.
Next in terms of rates maybe Western Union. That is located on the street behind Sinatras restaurant. My favorite mobile exchange guy is Mapello. He has rates comparable to Western Union and definitely better than any exchange guy in the street. The best part is he will come to you. You can be at the beach in Sosua, but not at liberty to leave to exchange money. You call Mapello tell him where you are (give him the business address or name) and within a few minutes he'll be there. I exchanged $1, 000 us on the beach once without having to leave my seat. No passport required. His number is 809 490 3024. He is a very respected gentleman In the area, probably in his 50's or early 60's. Nobody bothers him even though he is known by the locals to carry a shitload of currency on his person.
My understanding is many of the local banks offer competitive rates inside of the bank as well. But the lines can be long and the tellers may be very slow. Definitely bring your passport. In terms of fast service and good rates, the exchange place in the Orange plaza and next door to M & M massage wins. In terms of the best rate, but sometimes flaky service hours and flaky when it comes to large exchanges, banco Providencial wins. I usually go there 1st. If they tell me to come back a certain time I may come back or go around the block to the spot by M & M massage.
Another option is the Playero supermercado on the main road. Their rates are decent but not as good as the other places I mentioned. You better bring your passport. I made a few copies of my passport. Next time I exchange somewhere that requires my passport, I am going to offer the copy and keep the passport in my pocket and see what happens.

I have never been asked for my passport here, only drawback is that the place I believe is closed on the weekends.
For all the guys that have been around many chicas from the DR know that a lot of them are very curios to the stuff you have with you and do not mind using stuff like your hair brush to comb there hair. Which does not really bother me but I suggest that all mongers put that shit away. Whats going on RR. I started traveling based on you and another member years ago. Bestmate. Only been to Thailand and Philippines but been going to Thailand every year sense 2003.
