Today I'm doing my usual two hour walk on el Conde in the morning when one of the expats stopped me after my workout and said it's a festival going on just north of el Conde. We decided to go and it was nice, even got to meet the police chief Mr Sosa, cool dude. After the festival we went to the monger / expat office, the cigar shop by the park. One expat had his JBL portable speaker playing old school r&b then some jazz. Lovely spot to post up. Girls parading through, events like quinceras, people taking pictures with the pigeons, groups riding bikes and an old school painter in front of el Conde restaurant. The curfew is extended till 9 pm so this is the first time I've been out at nighttime.
My lady and son were at my apartment so I needed to get home but the party wasn't over. I mentioned to a friend at the cigar shop that I was going home and I had some Leyenda Brugal at the house and off we went. We saw another expat in front of National and invited him also. We sat on my huge balcony overlooking Zona Colonial and sipped on the liquor after my girl brought three glassed out, a bowl of ice and sliced lemons. Boney James played on my Sirius radio tv channel. The expats spent the next hour arguing about who has the worst Spanish LOL. I'm laughing because they both feel they are right and never admit when they aren't, funny shit, but I call it wasted energy. My girl came out with three plates of grilled chicken strips, French fries and tossed salad. I didn't even know she was cooking. We ate and the Fellas left at 9:15 pm not even worried about violating the curfew.
Anyone visiting Santo Domingo and wants to have a drink with the old city in the background hit me up. I just ask that you don't have insecurities about critics on an anonymous chat board. I'm a positive dude so let's appreciate the good things.

So I am going to venture along the Malencon today along Avenida Espana in Santo Domingo Este. I have been told that there are a few casas de citas in this area. If any of you guys know of names or locations of these places it would be greatly appreciated. I will do the recon work and report back to the team here. After my morning walk on el Conde hit the coconut water place on Conde for my natural smoothie. Sliced apples, sliced mango and coconut water for 175 pesos. Posted up at the park on Conde to drink my smoothie and people watch. I noticed this beautiful girl that looked like Alicia Keys with another girl and a dude who appeared to be cleaning the park. What drew my attention other than her looks was that she had a very expensive professional camera on her back strap. They had plastic zip lock baggies with number written on them. I asked the pretty girl in Spanish what they were doing and she explained in perfect English. She was a college student studying to be a veterinarian. They were collecting pigeon poop and had 384 samples from all over the city. They were looking for parasites in the pigeon poop. She was so nice and beautiful I tried to be slick and said, I guess your boyfriend must come second to the animals and she said yes and the other guy was her fiancé. Damn, she said she had 11 pets at home which included dogs, cats and birds. The other girl looked like Venus Williams and was now in play. Later while sitting at the office (cigar bar at the park) with the fellas the gossip was about the working girls passing by and hanging out. I traveled to Santo Domingo last month for the first time. I had great success on Seeking but I messaged each woman until I felt we were a match & then I scheduled video calls with my finalists until I felt comfortable. My first trip was a great success in my book. I did have to eliminate the ones with GPS but found many with reasonable expectations. I'm not going to break the bank for these ladies but the one I spent 3 nights with last month treated me so well, I bought her $200 of clothes on our last day that she was not expecting.

Love to hear feedback!My recommendation if you are a first time to the DR, make it to Blackbeards, then maybe to Sosua. Of course, my comments are based on Pre-Covid. This area is / was a little bit easier to navigate, then you get a feel for the DR. I have been to Santo Domingo twice. I hooked up with a couple of locals on Cupid, some street walkers, and Casas. I am not sure how much time you have, but Santo Domingo is probably a little harder to navigate.
Blackbeards has a forum on this board, so you can read about it. Also some info about buses from SD to the area. But if you are going to stay in the SD area, read through this a whole lot. You might make it to Boca Chica. Juan Dolio is close but, not really a mongering area, but they have a Casa, and some good restaurants.

To be in the middle of the craziness but safe, Discovery hotel.

The noise from the early morning street traffic will wake you up very early. Rooms in back are smaller and cheaper, and you can sleep until a reasonable hour.

I just got settled in back home and sharing what I encountered on this trip to RD. I was in Santo Domingo Este the majority of the time, but also ventured west of the river into SD, and took a trip up to Santiago to see a few of the cigar factories.
Mongering is simply a little different now. The pandemic has made things a bit more difficult in my opinion. I did use Tinder and found a couple of nice ladies, and also had a friend from a small town north of San Cristobal that I spent a lot of time with as she provides excellent companionship as well as cooking amazing criolla fare.
I would say that paying to get Tinder Gold right now is without question a good investment. I met a nurse on there that was a wildcat. She lived in SDE up around the Faro de Colon area. If you are not interested in partying at night or sport fucking during the day, there are plenty of other nice hotels in Sto Domingo at half the price.

Apps are only 1 tool. Whenever I am staying for any decent amount of time 2 weeks to 1. 5 years I use the same strategy. My breakdown is a combination of Dating Apps / Websites (the entire time) . You have to be a complete social outcast in order to not have someone not offer you food. I have been in the homes of people that live in some very economically disadvantaged barrios. And not once has the person in charge of the home fail offer me something to eat or drink. Not once! I agree with that. It might not be a steak dinner, but they will offer you something. Soup, oatmeal, fruits, etc. I usually turn it down when I see the roaches and rats running around though.

1200 is nothing. Its just 22 dollars, barely enough for one day expense for them. I come to the capital on my business and fun trips regularly but now wanting to switch to non pros. Most of them, almost all are only interested in money compensation cause the economy and jobs have tanked so much and the chicas are so desperate now. We get by with inverters, generators and just toughing it out in the dark. My full sin wave inverter had a alarm that let me know the power was out. My refurbished modified sin wave inverter doesn't make a sound but you can hear the sound of the fans running when the power goes out. But, it is a beast! Of course with inverters you need batteries. Batteries need to be maintained and replaced over the years. But it is better than sitting in the dark.
Doesn't make it any more palatable that I have to build a back up system to function day to day not just in emergency situations. One of the things I hate the most about living in Republica Dominicana is the lack of basic infrastructure. I will not comment on why I feel this is. I was at the Nacional supermarket last week and I did do some research just for my curiosity. Although Nacional is high end supermarket, the price of two dozen eggs was high, vegetables and bread alone was going for over 600 to 800. A big sack of rice was not available so I could not check on the price of rice and beans. And the meat section was no less then 400 to 500 for average portions of carne. Milk is only available here as pre-packaged containers with longer shelf life, they don't sell fresh milk anymore since May, and the cost of packaged milk was average, about 300 o 400 pesos for 1 L container. Now most dominicans like to drink lot of sodas and juices, I did not check prices on it but I'm sure it wasn't cheap. Lastly, I went to the hot food section and the food quality was disappointing but it cost me close to 500 for a ravioli, mixed vegetables and coke. I know I was not in the same place where the locals would shop but their prices for similar items can't be that much different wherever they may shop.
Now keep in mind that we're having a discussion on food costs here on the island. I'm sure they have other needs such as toiletries, spices, electric bill, netflix, and more importantly daily transportation. So I'm still curious to learn how they can manage to get by on 1500 monthly budget.
I cannot speak for StrawHat but I have always known (even though others challenged me) that 1200 DOP a week as a weekly food budget (4800 DOP a week) was enough for a Dominican family to get by on. I did not say it was enough for eating everyday in a restaurant like one of the off islanders living here for a week like a millionaire. Individuals reading my posts need to remember I actually live here. For quite a few years now. Not to many others posting regularly can say this. And not many my many detractors can actually say that either.
I personally doubt that any family can get along entirely and take care of all their household needs with just 1200 DOP a week covering all basic necessities. Nacional as others have noted is a high end supermarket. Locals shop there. Those who have more money than average and access to transportation. I shop there when I am close. You can find a lot of imported items that are more specialized. You usually do not find Nacional's located in less affluent areas. Nor do you find tennis clubs with 250,000 DOP initial memberships in less affluent area. But one exists. I ball on a budget here so I did not join.
How do they get by and cover all basic needs? There is a lot sharing that goes on. Some go without. There may be more than one income earner in the household. If a chica lives alone she may have another income source she is not disclosing to you (think: Western Union Novio). But I find it most interesting that people have chosen to concentrate on food. I also pointed out that you can get your dick sucked and fuck for 1200 DOP. So think about that! One hour of work can feed your family for a week here in Republica Dominicana. Never in my entire life of working did I every have a job that paid like that. I have had some good paying jobs in my day!

In any event $22 dollars spent on food ifor a family of four is likely to represent only a small portion of living expenses, maybe 10 to 20%. Rent, clothing, water, electricity, phone, toiletries, laundry items, personal grooming, babysitting. Transportation, etc, take up the rest, like it does on household budgets the world over.
And most chica's you'll be meeting in SD, BC or Sosua would spend that amount and more in order to plow their trade!

"Toiletries" sounds a bit posh, unless you mean cleaning materials, laundry and personal hygiene requirements. "Spices" is another odd suggestion. Surely they would be included in "food costs"?
I would estimate a single person needs at least 10,000 pesos a month to survive, and add 5000 for a partner or other person in the household, and 3000 for each additional person thereafter. So a family of four would need at least 21,000 a month to survive. That money could be earned, donated by friends, family or charities, state benefits (of which there are few in the DR), stolen (in cash or equivalents such as stolen electricity) or remittances from abroad.
Anyone living on less would deteriorate physically and probably mentally as well, and die prematurely.

I have asked the same in the past, getting similar number $. You have to add to the equation that, like in my country, colmadones also sell on account so you can get food and pay later. According to WU in 2018 Dominican Republic ranked 9th in money transfer received. Although I find most produce cheap, it has been cheaper in the past. For example, since my first visit in 1998 and for a decade a pound of coffee cost the equivalent of $2, now it cost the double. Avocados, plantain, the cost was the equivalent of 5 cents of a dollar in street markets. Now they cost more since they are very popular export items.
I have been dirt poor in my life not that I'm rich now but I'm ok. In my dirt poor days we ate rice, beans and odd pieces of pork to season the food. We ate greens and green beans so I know what living on the cheap is like. This morning I went to La Sirena to buy some supplies (Chica #2 arrives this morning) and I looked around for food prices. A 10 lb bank of rice was 350 DOP and beans were cheap. The had ham hocks & knuckles on the cheap side of the meat market.
So I posed the question to Chica #2 and she spends 5000 DOP per month on just personal products, she estimates her parents spend about 10,000 DOP per month for food. I presume her family does OK money wise.
My Chica #1 (sent home this morning) is dirt poor but she is industrious and hard working. She will be successful in life because of her situation and drive. She told me this our 3rd meeting that she started making and selling candy out of her home (she lives with her mother and sister) using the money I've given her. And hopes to open a small mart in the future. She never asks me for extras but I give her extras due to her effort. She does not spend her money on many personal items. She has a plan it seems.
Now I like both Chicas but Chica #1 has earned my upmost respect for her industrious nature. Been in a modern grocery store lately in the Dominican Republic? They sell everything from vegetables, personal care items, alcohol, paper items, soap and cleaning supplies. Asking someone how much they spend on groceries and in return they tell you how much they spend at the grocery store gives you no better idea of what someone is spending on food unless you look at the receipt.

So I asked my driver who I've used for my three trips what the average monthly spend for food, just food. He thought about it and said 15,000 DOP per month. He said the problem with food prices is that they keep going up. He said staple food products have been increasing in price this year. So, I'm at my gate, ready to go home to rest & recuperate. Thus far my two week experience this time has been pleasant, not so great but not so bad either. Mostly due to the ever changing situation in the world nowadays. Some of the chicas were not very forthcoming due to personal reasons this time. I was also multitasking with my work so I did not put enormous effort in meeting lot of women either.

Chica #3 got her at the shopping center and introduced by a bilingual friend. She was a semi pro and not making enough from her day job. This one was quite and lot of fun so I took care of her graciously to keep my place when I return in the future.
A couple of notes from my observation: Nov was very different than July-Aug. The curfew is still there but it has been extended into the late evening hours. There are very loose restrictions now compared to few months ago. All businesses are open as usual. I guess the new president is worried about his country slipping farther down during these uncertain economic times. A lot more people had gotten lay offs or lost their jobs permanently. So many people have fallen behind on their rent payments by few months. Basic costs are increasing at all levels and the gap between rich and poor is also widening here in the capital. But the most unusual and alarming thing that I noticed is that people here are out in public in large numbers during the day. They wear the masks but the logic here is as if the mask will prevent them from getting infected at all costs. I went to the club section in Piantini last Sunday, went to an outdoor club 'Maria' during the day. The cost of grocery items other than rice, beans, local fruit and meat scraps is absurdly high in the Dominican Republic compared to even 10 years ago. It's gotten worse because of the pandemic but it was already crazy expensive compared to Latin American countries that don't depend as much on tourism and imported goods (Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, etc.). Besides the high cost of imported goods, government corruption is a major cause. An example of this corruption is consumer tax rates of up to 25% but very little evidence of even basic infrastructure and social services investment.
It's not very noticeable to tourists. What you have to spend as a full time resident does not compare well with what you have to spend. And what you get in return. In other Caribbean / Latin America countries. It's a question of quality of life. Noise pollution, unreliable water and electricity supply, and zero customer service unless you spend New York / London / Paris costs at restaurant and other hospitality venues. For those who have traveled a bit a prime example of the customer service gap is noticeable if you approach an employee in a supermarket or hardware store and ask where something can be found. You are lucky if you can get employees to stop using their phones long enough to speak with you, and even luckier if you get a useful response.
I have asked the same in the past, getting similar number $. You have to add to the equation that, like in my country, colmadones also sell on account so you can get food and pay later. According to WU in 2018 Dominican Republic ranked 9th in money transfer received. Although I find most produce cheap, it has been cheaper in the past. For example, since my first visit in 1998 and for a decade a pound of coffee cost the equivalent of $2, now it cost the double. Avocados, plantain, the cost was the equivalent of 5 cents of a dollar in street markets. Now they cost more since they are very popular export items.

I stay away from crowded bars in the US and the DR.I was out today doing tareas (errands) and drove by a location on Av. Venezuela, in Santo Domingo este. I add that because there were a few veteran posters who did not know Av. Venezuela was in Santo Domingo este. This was a couple of years ago. I hope they have worked out their geography issues at this point.
Name of the place is Mr. Grilled. Now they are a restaurant, bar, car wash. So you can't eat or drink with a mask on. So it is understandable that no one had one on in the place from what I could see. But there was also absolutely no social distancing.
Even with most of the dining room in open area with a patio you still would not catch me in there. On top of that I can't recommend the food. Block party in mi barro tonight with no one with masks on. Observed from a distance. Was told by my chica visiting who showed up by using a taxi exempt from restrictions that in the barrio they simply play games with the police. Staying close to their homes and partying and when the police show everyone goes into someone's house. They wait until they leave and then go back to partying.

In all things negoitate. Airbnb charges you and the host about 15% as their cut, You can make a Host eat the charge, Or you could stay a few nights and if you like the place cut a side deal, They'll accept a significant cash discount.

I know him because this is his country of origin. He lives here as do I. When we are working together he often speaks to me in English in a way that is not perfectly grammatically. When I feel like he has made a error large enough to be corrected, I correct him. He has asked me to do that. That is why he always talks to me in English as opposed to his native Spanish. I am not like some of the idiots posting up on here. He is a grown man. I do not look at him strangely. I am not correcting him to make a point that he is not knowledgable (professionally trained engineer). I am not correcting him in an attempt to nullify or make fun of his life experiences. I correct him to increase his knowledge. Let me say that again. I correct him to increase his knowledge. And he has asked me to do that. In addition, I often explain how words can be used differently in different situations and how you can say the same thing differently using the same words.
In the case of the word tarea the Spanish professors have continued to insist that there is only one meaning and one use of the word. I have already provide evidence that shows differently. I find it odd. My reading compression skills did not go down in my first language after I learned a second. Seems I am the exception in this case.
When a young child in my life says "moma" and hands me something, I know he means "toma". I repeat the word "toma" so they can learn it property. That is how you teach a child. And please note Spanish is not my first language. I suppose that is what the Spanish professors here are doing. They think I am a child. So they are continuing to repeat the word so that I learn it. I appreciate the care they are showing in their instruction. You can see it in the way that they write to me. Like I said, it has been going on for years. And I see that some of the same individuals are continuing in their efforts to make sure I speak the language as they feel it should be used as linguistic professionals.

I was up and down Churchill Ave. And did not hear a single retail store playing loud music. In fact when I talk to friends or relatives I always say " estoy en la calle haciendo cosas" which is a lot more informal than tareas. Dilegencias or gestiones are the formal words.

I also understand what you mean, in the context of your expression it is easy to understand for us spanish speaking persons. In fact when I talk to friends or relatives I always say " estoy en la calle haciendo cosas" which is a lot more informal than tareas. Dilegencias or gestiones are the formal words.I always use diligencia. That is what dominicans use most.
It is a crying shame that on a island with solar, wind and wave energy available that the lights ever go off at all.
For those who do not live in the "nose in the air at a angle they risk drowning in the rain" or those of who do not live in building with full plantas. We get by with inverters, generators and just toughing it out in the dark. My full sin wave inverter had a alarm that let me know the power was out. My refurbished modified sin wave inverter doesn't make a sound but you can hear the sound of the fans running when the power goes out. But, it is a beast! Of course with inverters you need batteries. Batteries need to be maintained and replaced over the years. But it is better than sitting in the dark.
Doesn't make it any more palatable that I have to build a back up system to function day to day not just in emergency situations. One of the things I hate the most about living in Republica Dominicana is the lack of basic infrastructure. I will not comment on why I feel this is. Lead acid batteries should be checked for water level and need to keep your connections clean. Use a little lime juice directly on the terminals or mixed with water and a toothbrush. Now installing it is real man work. The batteries and the inverter are heavy. I know this as I have participated in the installation of my system in two different apartments. A two real man job. Mos def! Also a little knowledge about basic electricity and you are good. One less thing! Now, where can I get 1st class internet with real speed at price that is not defined as highway robbery?

Leaving Boca Chica yesterday there was an accident so the GPS routed me to the north side of Boca Chica, and down to pick of the highway farther west. During that detour we saw 5 big parties / bars and nobody in these barrios are wearing masks. Today I picked a chick up in Barrio 27 de Feb a little ways down from the floating bridge, and nobody in that barrio was wearing masks either.
When you are outside of the barrios, eg the popular public and tourist areas, then you see people wearing masks. I do not think the people are taking it as seriously as the government wants them to.

Altruistic assistance to others is not why I'm on ISG although I have PMd quite a few newbies over the years regarding my visits to 25+ countries.
