Moving to Rio permanently as of May 1. I'll rent in Copa while I keep an eye open for a good apartment deal to buy in Ipanema.

I'll be moving in with my girlfriend . Over/under from my friends there figures that will last about 10 days.

Luckily I know plenty of sweet young things to console me if and when we do part.
We haven't even moved in together and already she tells me I can't go to Help by myself. LOL
I tried to PM you but was not successful. I live in Copa. wanted to share experience with purchasing apartment here.

Moving to Rio permanently as of May 1. I'll rent in Copa

I do rent suites in my own apartment 2 blocks from help to visitors. Send me a PM if interested. Of course, it comes with free advice by a 20 year Rio resident monger.

No hard sell, I often give advice to people that do NOT stay at my place too.

If you stay for a longer period, then you are better off getting apartments for monthly rental. I don't try to beat long monthly rates.

Still, maybe you get better deals if you spend a few days at my place to scout for your monthly rental.

while I keep an eye open for a good apartment deal to buy in Ipanema.

Here I start disagreeing with you.

I wish I had no property here in Brazil, I could have such a good life without trouble, lawsuits, losses, lawyers, etc .......

I recommend everyone to live off an atm. Rent apartments, rent girlfriends too.

If you own an apartment be prepared to
* maybe lose it all in a scam set up by your girlfriend or your lawyer
* be sued by your girlfriend for pension for being your common law wife for simply living with you

* being sued by some plumber who claims the prior apartment owner did not pay his vacation allowance and thus he can auction off your apartment. I had a house of mine auctioned off by a judge who did not even think he needed to notify me. When people told me I thought it was a joke as I had a perfectly legal registered title.

* have your neighbors and building managers care less about the leak in the roof or in their toilet that drips dirty water on your nice king size bed.
Of course, you can hire a lawyer who will charge a fortune but then take kickbacks from your neighbor to lose your case. And you will have to wait for 7 years while shit drips onto your bed.

Rent. If you believe in Brazil, buy Brazilian stock or funds at the New York Stock exchange.

I'll be moving in with my girlfriend . Over/under from my friends there figures that will last about 10 days.

hopefully you will come to your senses.

Even though I have made a big mistake and have a girl friend. Big mistake. At least I had her sign some papers my lawyer recommended me. Still, there really is no safe way to have a girl live with you and be safe she cannot get your money.

Luckily I know plenty of sweet young things to console me if and when we do part.

now you are talking sense .........

We haven't even moved in together and already she tells me I can't go to Help by myself. LOL

Right. Let us chat, come to your senses. Help me to come to my senses myself too.

All,

I'm visiting Rio in late July or August. I'm going by myself unfortunately. I want to know what hotel I should stay in and where I should go. I want to have a good time and meet some nice girls.

Seems you are not allowed to receive private messages.
send me a private message with your email, or pay your dues to Jackson so you can receive messages.

I live in Copacabana 2 blocks from Help. Probably can give you some advice or help. I rent out rooms in my apartment, if interested, but independent of any commercial ties anyone is welcome to stop by and chat, or email me with questions.

We share a common interest in the female of our species so we should have an interesting topic to talk about ...

I agree with Brazil Specialist about renting and not buying. Owning also ties you to one location, no freedom to move around, and all the other things mentioned.

I do disagree on the girlfriend/wife point. If you can find the right girl and are tired of mongering, it will work. Copa is not the place to settle down though, and Ipanema/Leblon will not be that receptive if you are an older gringo with a young brazilian.

If you are determined to purchase, get a very good broker and attorney to research the property. You can be at risk, so do not dump all of your life savings into the property. Unless you like 25% interest rates, you will have to pay 100% of the cost of the property and taxes.

If you are determined to live with a girl long term, get an attorney and have an agreement written up. Marrying her is actually safer because you can do a pre-marital agreement and also specify ´bens separado´ (seperate assets) on the marrriage form.

I believe that Brasil has a two year common law wife rule, after two years together she has the same rights as a wife. I don't think you can draw up a prenuptial on that.

For best advice on living in Brasil check out gringoes.com.br it's a good alternative source of non-mongering info.

Good Luck.

Thank you for all your concerns and advice.

I have been to Rio many times. I would not consider living there now without many visits. I have been many places , this is where I want to be.

I'll start with the rebuttal on the purchase. I agree I have no interest in being " Mr. Landlord" along with all the problems that entails. My investments will stay elsewhere.

I do intend to buy a Cobertura in Ipanema , I have faith in my lawyer, whom I have known for many years ( which means he'll still fuck me , but it'll cost way more ) Yes he is expensive but he is also fair. If I use him I pay muito , if I use his firm I pay less. I will definitely get him to finalize any purchase.

As for my GF I am on much shakier ground here to justify a GF in Rio, I don't disagree with anything you say. She is about 100 years years younger than I am. She was never a GDP, but sure I know financial stability is the appeal.

If it works out she is incredible, she is so beautiful, I literally lie awake at night just to look at her. We will see.

Right. To my dismay I was informed that the new civil code from a few years ago is vague about the duration

There is no firm jurisdiction established, due to the newness of the law.

Also in Brazil, the courts can give arbitrarily different verdicts in similar cases.

i hope your coming trip goes well.

i usually pay the girls afterwards. but usually i know the girls i am with anyway. in rio, i pick up girls in the restaurants, usually mabs, in the miami video peep show on copacabana ave, or in thermas. in all cases i spend time chatting and drinking with the girls prior to going to my apartment. they have seen you buying drinks and know you have the money.
you can also just set the money out on a table so she can just get before she leaves.

you should place all valuables in your safe before you leave the apartment, that way you are not scrambling to find it and hid e it when you return with a girl! some things that will not fit in the safe, such as my dvd player i put in my luggage so it is not visible.

but in rio there are so many girls until most of us on here take our time and take home only those with some degree of class and intelligence. yes, you can get robbed, but you can diminish those chances by being picky.

in rio, you meet the girls, hang out in restaurants, walk to your place holding hands, and then spend at least 2 hours together. sex in rio includes almost everything, too (bj, totally nude, etc.). the girls will shower before and after sex and some will cook and hang out longer.
so to me this amounts to gfe.
but in rio there is a thin line between prostitution and girl friends, i think. sex is such a part of rio's culture that it is easy to find yourself with a girl, or more, who think you are their man. i have actually had one girl order dinner for her and a woman friend of hers in mabs while i was downtown (centro). to her it was acceptable because she thinks of herself as my girlfriend. the owner made me pay the bill, too!

she also followed me to a therma and demanded entrance.
so be careful because the gfe may be more than you ask for.

thanks again. yes, that is the type of gfe thta i especially enjoy, whether it is 2 hours or two days. i like those types of preliminaries too, where you can geta feeling for the chemistry tht the girl exudes. in costa rica, it pretty much amounts to a girls walking past you in the del ray, saying "company????" and no other preliminaries most of the time. there have been exceptions but not very many.

your advice is well appreciated also. i will have to amend my ways because in thailand, i pretty much leave everything (except money) laying around and have never lost a thing, so your advice is much appreciated.

Despite a few trips to Rio, and my overwhelming desire to do so, I have yet to experience VM. My hobbying has been confined to Copa and Centro (massagems, termas and takeout).

I must make my way to VM! Sperto and Tung have definitely wet my palate with their fine displays of Villa samplings. Would any seasoned VM gents care to lead the way for a fellow monger? I will be visiting during the last week of May and into June (12 days).

Ryjer,

Co-pilot sounds great. May 22nd – June 2nd are my dates (very similar to yours).

Yes, I’ve spent some time in Centro (more specifically BA 85, RB 156 and RB 185) and look forwards to doing so again, though more extensively.

I’d like to spend a day in VM and plan to spend at least three days in Centro (for the educated consumer).

I shall be in Brasil and Rio the last 2 weeks of June. I'd be in Rio on June 14, in the afternoon I'd like to try some of the centro places. I speak fluent portuguese but never been to these places. WOuld be fun to go there with an expert of Centro places and share some stories. Couple of caipis and drinks on me. PM me if in town during that time.

So my boss just told me some fucked-up news. No more overtime for management. From now on, all worked overtime will be paid in comp. time. I am now adding about 4 days on the front end of the trip. I'm still willing to hang in VM and Centro. Keep in mind, there a game at the stadium the weekend of the 24-25. You might want to add that to your to-do list.

With my extra days, I'm unsure what to do. I was thinking about Sampa, but also considering Belo Horizonte. I just have to stay out of Rio for those days. Got a girl there looking to put me on lock-down the entire trip. Not that it's a bad thing, but I need lots of space.

I leave tomorrow morning. Moving permanently to Rio, or at least will continue to travel but be based in Rio.

Have a nice 1 BR apt, ( I'm renting in Copa , but probably will buy in Ipanema ) my stuff will be in storage until I find the right Cobertura. No rush on that I'll see how property prices and the Real value go , with my permanent residency HSBC said they will lend me 60% of the value of a purchase , but rates are high so we'll look around. I'll be visiting London for business sometime then two weeks in Ottawa Canada for the great Music Festival there, the rest of the time it's choppes on the beach ogling the girls. I remember I was asked once what I wanted to be when I grew up and I said " a dirty old man". I guess I'll be living the dream.

Will be there from 5/21 - 5/26.

I know this is kind of last minute, but if anyone wants to join forces and share a 2 bd or 3 bd apartment, I'd be interested. Send me a pm and we can figure something out. . .

As long as you're 100 % drug-free like me and not too flaky, there shouldn't be any problems. I'm flexible and cooperative. It would be cool to split the costs of the apt. and probably a bit safer that way too. I've been to Colombia several times and can take care of myself, but this is my first trip to Brazil and it seems at least from reading this forum that there's a lot of scary stories out there.

I'm 36 and speak Spanish fluently but unfortunately almost no Portuguese. I'm looking at renting a place from the Amerioca guys but if you have a better idea, I'll hear you out. :)

I live 2 blocks from Help, have excellent internet, excellent mattress, excellent air con, and you can get free advice from the resident monger (me). I am paranoid about safety, my keys cannot be copied (unlike all other apartments where 50 guys with 500 girlfriends all had the opportunity to copy the keys).

I'll be arriving in Rio for a week on July 12. Just a quick couple of questions if I may:

Which airport is most convenient for arrival from Dubai/Sao Paulo: International or domestic? I'll be landing somewhere between 9:30 and 10:30pm depending on which flight I choose, and don't want to spend two hours that time of night getting out of the airport, when I could be getting ready for clubbing instead.

Also, Is it high season in July?

Thanks

PS - I've been RTFFing (reading the friendly forum) - great info, thanks. Whatever happened to Bubba Boy?

July is high season, Brazilian vacation. not sure if foreigners come in droves to the 'cold' winter in Rio.

Usually there are no connecting flights between domestic and international airports, so you probably have no choice but to fly to Rio International airport.

Rio domestic is kind of cramped, can only accomodate smaller planes (takeoff is right smack into the path of sugar loaf mountain). Of course the location is more convenient.

I have a trip to Brazil in two weeks. I will be flying to Sao Paulo, but my final destination is Sao Jose Dos Campos wher I will be there for a week before heading home. I did lots of searches on the Brazil board but can't find any mongering information on this city.

I also know it is a small obscure place, but was wondering if there are any mongering establishments such as termas or clinicas ...etc for some fun.

Kindly, if you know any information, please pass it on. My travel plan is strict and will not allow me to spend time in Sao Paulo, otherwise, the I would have used the many institutions available there.

Please help or make suggestions

Cheers

The options from Europe to Rio are Air France, TAM, TAP, BA, Iberia and maybe even Varig? Last time I went with TAM. Next time I think I'll go with BA (British Airways). Some friends got good deals travelling with Swiss Air, TAM, Iberia and Air France.

I don't think it differs that much which company you choose. It depends more on when you go and what discount your travel agency can offer you.

The cheapest tickets from europe seem to be with Airfrance.True. I spent an hour last night on Travelocity and Expedia jiggling the dates slightly, and found a great itinerary with Air France (Dubai-Paris-Rio). The departure and arrival times are perfect. And at US$2,550 it was $300 cheaper than Emirates Airlines.

I'm considering cutting my Rio trip down from seven to five nights, and staying two nights in either Kiev or Moscow on the way, just for a bit of variety.

Look for more BA 85 reports. Mabs is always my first hangout spot but the place was dead in June when I was there. Meia Pataca is not really for me.

Hi all,

I will soon be visiting Rio de Janeiro for some business and want to enjoy all the nice girls this beautifu country can offer. I need your advise at 2 levels:

1- I'd like to invite girls to my room in the hotel for great fun. There are so many agencies available. Which one would you recommend in term of quality / price ration, reliability and eventually english speaking girls. My portugese is nowhere.

2- I know that in some hotels, visiting girls must register (and I am charged for that, such aas in the Sofitel) or are even not allowed (Caesar Park hotel). I am looking for a nice 4 or 5 * hotel on the beach (Ipanema or Copacabana) where there is no such restriction to your visits. Any recommendation?

Any additional suggestion would be highly appreciated. And I will soon share my experience with you.

A while back we had a discussion about flying to RIO:

Continental is best in my opinion. The seats all have their own little TV screens and the food is fairly good. The planes are usually clean and cool. On the downside, you have to spend an hour in Sao Paulo coming and going. Sometimes this hour can turn into a longer period. Once I spent two hours in Sao Paulo on the way home and they turned off the AC/ventilation! (then again this was the trip a few years back when the girl next to me masturbated with a dildo! True story!)

Delta is not very good. They barely crank up the AC. You might get a TV, might not. Delta is always delayed. The food is not good, even if you pay for the special meal.

On the upside, Delta arrives in Rio early and leaves late at night. When leaving you actually can spend a full day in Rio. I spent a day in BA 85, then took the metro back to Copa at 7pm, to leave at 8pm for the night flight (which was delayed another hour anyway).

United. Not sure if they still go to RIo. But the two times I flew them I hated this airline. Man, they treat you like a number. it is like cattle-call. United is just too big for its own good. Plus you have to go trough Miami Airport, which needs an upgrade!

I have not flown TAM or AMerican to Rio.

Continental
I also love the in seat entertainment systems. Living in Michigan it just sucks to fly to Houston, then SP, followed by Rio. It just seems out of the way.

NWA/Delta
Getting there early in the AM is a plus. I have never had a bad experience with them. When you're checking in at Delta, they have never charged me to upgrade to exit row seating at all. NWA they always charge me to upgrade.

United
They fucked me. Due to weather, I missed my connection. I was the only person from the Michigan flight continuing to Rio, and they never really told me that I missed the flight. The fact that it was an evening flight, when I got to DC, they were actually closing up for the night. When I bitched about the lack of info I received, they gave me some food vouchers the next morning.

I always try to stick with NWA/Delta/Continental due to the fact that they've been sky partners. Not that my miles are actually worth anything.

The options from Europe are maybe more limited.

The best is BA which flies direct from London to Rio non-stop, but is rarely the cheapest.

Slightly cheaper is TAM, often linked with BA, which refuels at SP, though you don't have to get off the plane.

Air France flies direct from Paris and has direct connections to several UK cities. They are ok except if there's problems at CDG.

Iberia and TAP are the cheapest tho probably not the quickest.

If for some reason it is convenient for you, you can also fly Lufthansa or KLM, but they tend not to offer savings otherwise.

Flights via the States vary, but I avoid them now due to the red tape hassle when you change planes on US soil. I can understand US airports being twitchy, but it makes little sense to go through it all if you can fly more directly. The flights via the States tend to be anything from the same price as Iberia up to the most expensive.

In terms of comfort and amenities in economy class, BA and Air France are the best in my experience. I've tried all except KLM and Lufthansa, though these airlines offer a good standard generally. Of course, anyone can lose your luggage. If you are the one percent or whatever that has a bad experience, no amount of statistics make up for it.

I agree it's maybe worth checking total flight times as they can vary by 100%. I also look at arrival time in RJ, as you may want to have a different plan of action depending on whether you arrive in daytime, rush-hour or evening.

When I went to Brazil last March 2008, I found great airfares through this Brazilian travel website.

http://www.staynbrazil.com

This website is part of the YTB chain, which is, sadly, a thinly-veiled pyramid scheme. The price you get from any YTB agent is the same as you can get from Orbitz, expedia, etc., with $5-$10 tacked on as a fee.

In the end the problem I have with using any YTB agent's website is that the company makes its money from selling these websites to people who pay a $500 fee, plus $50/month, NOT from actually selling travel.

If you are a YTB agent, get your money back.

March starts the low season in Brasil. It's pretty easy to find competitive rates where ever you look. Most agencies just buy tickets in bulk, and re-sell them. They're common referred to as consolidators. While some have discounted rates, they tend to save the best for actual travel companies. Though I have never used it, I hear http://www.bacctravel.com is decent.

I used to use BACC travel years ago and they were very good. I stopped using them because I got involved in the frequent flyer program and even though I do remember that they used to count mileage from their tickets but I think now it is limited because of the discounted price plus you can't upgrade to a better class.

The best way is to shop around, look on Orbitz, get your flight information, I think they favor Tam and have a special deal with them. But you have to call, I called them last year just to see and their prices on TAM were several hundred less than Orbitz for example.

The guy who owns the agency is like Mr. Brazil in NY. He owns many Brazilian type businesses in NY including several Churrascarias like Plataforma. He is even responsible for promoting the big Brazil Day every year in NY, this year on August 31. So many people when I tell them I'm from NY in Rio ask me if I know him and a personal friend of mine in Rio is his attorney, he's all over the place. They're a good choice.

TJI don't know about their business plan. All I know is I got to Rio without any problems, and I was happy with the apartment.

My apartment was at Atlantica and Rua Miguel Lemos. I was between Club HELP and Mea Pataca, ground zero for GDP. And the ads on the website has great deals to Brazil. It even has TAM as an advertiser.

For my own travel planning, I keep www.staynbrazil.com bookmarked for it's ads and booking engine. It gives me something to do at work or at home late at night when I am dreaming about my next trip to Brazil.

In other words, it keeps me from being depreessed away from the GDP.

Yeah I understand. It is hard not being in Rio.

But, ironically, CA Attorney general Jerry Brown just announced today he is filing a lawsuit against YTB travel:

Ca. Atty. Gen. Brown Sues To Topple Online Pyramid Scheme
> LOS ANGELES--California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. today sued YourTravelBiz.com for operating a gigantic pyramid scheme that recruited tens of thousands of members with deceptive claims that members could earn huge sums of money through its online travel agencies.

“YourTravelBiz.com operates a gigantic pyramid scheme that is immensely profitable to a few individuals on top and a complete rip-off for most everyone else,” Attorney General Brown said. “Today’s lawsuit seeks to shut down the company’s unlawful operation before more people are exploited by the scam.”

YourTravelBiz.com and its affiliates operate an illegal pyramid scheme that only benefits members if and when they find enough new members to join the scam. Once enrolled, members who join the pyramid scheme earn compensation for each new person they enlist, regardless of whether they sell any travel. The company lures new members by offering huge income opportunities through online travel agencies yet the typical person actually makes nothing selling travel.

According to company records there were over 200,000 members in 2007 who typically pay more than $1,000 per year--$449.95 to set up an “online travel agency” with a monthly fee of $49.95. In 2007, only 38 percent of the company’s members made any travel commissions. For the minority of members who made any travel commission in 2007, the median income was $39.00--less than one month’s cost to keep the Website. There are at least 139,000 of the company’s travel Websites, all virtually identical, on the Internet.

YourTravelBiz’s extensive marketing materials include videos of people driving Porsches and other luxury cars, holding ten-thousand dollar checks, and claiming to be raking in millions of dollars in profits. The company advertises through its Website www.ytb.com, and at conventions, workshops and nationwide sales meetings which have been held in California locations such as Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco and San Diego.

Brown charges the company, its affiliates, and the company’s founders J. Lloyd Tomer, J. Scott Tomer, J. Kim Sorensen and Andrew Cauthen with operating an “endless chain scheme,” an unlawful pyramid in which a person pays money for the chance to receive money by recruiting new members to join the pyramid. Brown also charges the company with unfair business practices and false advertising practices including:

* Deceptive claims that members can earn millions of dollars with the company

* Operating without filing legally mandated documents with the attorney general and the Department of Corporations

* Selling an illegal travel discount program Under California’s unfair business practices statute, the company is liable for $2,500 per violation of law. Attorney General Brown is suing YourTravelBiz.com to get a court order that:

* Bars the company from making false or misleading statements

* Assesses a civil penalty of at least $15,000,000 and at least $10,000,000 in restitution for Californians who were ripped off by the company.

From August 6 through 10, thousands of members are preparing to travel to St. Louis for a national convention to learn new techniques to recruit more victims into the illegal pyramid scheme. Last year at least 10,000 people attended a similar national conference. For more details on the company’s plan to perpetuate its scheme visit:

http://www.yourtravelbiz.com/bizRep/BizReports/BIZRE PORT_07-18-08.htm

For more information on pyramid schemes visit: http://ag.ca.gov/consumers/general/pyramid_schemes .php

TJYou are absolutely correct. I was interested in going abroad and was trying to find a way to earn some extra income while gone. I originally bought into through a "friend" who was involved and, after providing the installment payment, started receiving numerous e-mails to purchase various classes and so forth. I realized then it was a scam. I wouldn't advise anyone to touch it.

"British Airways came in for particular criticism after it was announced that the airline was responsible for the loss of over one million bags last year, the second worst airline in Europe for lost belongings behind TAP Air Portugal."
http://www.articlesphere.com/Article/Travel-Insurance-Claims-Increase-For-Lost-Luggage/140309

ie two of the main carriers to Rio.

The only one recently that lost my luggage has been Air France, though I did get it back. I only ever check in luggage flying out of Rio (as opposed to flying in). At least that cuts the odds by half. Although as BA to/from GIG is nonstop, the only chance they get to lose it is getting it on or off the plane, rather than in transfers. And BA is nicer than TAP or Iberia.

Last year, in 3 trips, I spent a total of a little over 2 months in Rio. But these airfare prices are kicking my ass. All the sites I've used in the past are super high. I know usually in Aug./Sept. they go down to a reasonable rate for a few weeks, but I'm starting to get nervous. I paid $900usd last year for Christmas, but I don't think I'll make it this year at that price. There's just no way I'm gonna pay over $1500 for coach. Anyone have any thoughts on good ticket prices?

I have to return where my heart is, and that is beautiful Rio de Janiero. Paid $82 and 40,000 miles, but I have a great feeling that it will be oh so worth it! Anyone else going to be there during that time?

This is my third trip this year. I havent been there since Revellion (NYE), so I am going thru withdrawal. I tried getting to Thailand but the prices were just horrible. Colombia was another option, but when choosing between Medellin and Rio is there really a choice?

Feel free to email me contact numbers, etc so we can meet up down there. I am not sure if I am getting an APT or maybe hang out in one of the Hostels at least for a couple of days at the start. Don from Amerioca Tours offered me his old APT for about $85/nt, but after the psycho I had from Helpe the last time I was down there, I dont know if I want to risk someone damaging up a place.

I am big on the Termas (Luomo and 4x4) and most of my activity is there.

Hi guys,

I am planning a 5month trip to monger in every country on the South American Continant starting in Brazil in December. I plan to make a detailed report on every country and the Gems I find in them.

However, to this I will need to enter Brazil from Europe first. I was just told today that I cannot enter brazil (by the tourist agency selling me the ticket) because my return trip is not until after 5months and from another country, probably Venezuela. The 5months being beyond the 90day tourist requirement.

My question is-will I be refused entry to the country? Or will I be refused boarding to the plane in my own country?

I am planning on buying the tickets in the next few days so any input would be greatly appreciated.

I realise we arent a travel agency here on the forum but if make this trip I do plan to write some very detailed reoprts on my finding which I'm sure woud please everyone.

Regards,

JJI do not know what country you are coming from but from the US (and you do seem to have the name of an American Revolutionary War Patriot) I needed a return ticket in order to get my visa. If your country works the same way I am guessing you could:

1. Get a ticket leaving Brazil to your next destination (I think that you just need to leave Brazil, not necessarily "return") and hope that the consulate understands this and is not an unthinking bureaucrat (wishful thinking perhaps?)

or

2. Get a return ticket for within 90 days and then later cancel/change it.

Either way, hope that your visa is a 5 year and not 90 day so you can go back to Brazil after you hit all of the other countries.

Good luck. I look forward to your report.

Medical Alert: Sao Paulo State in Brazil
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A yellow fever alert in Brazil was widened to include parts of Sao Paulo state, which had its first human fatalities from the lethal disease in eight years in June. In January, Brazil's health ministry released a yellow fever disease alert for tourists and diplomats residing in the country after suspected cases emerged in late 2007.

People entering the South American country are not required by the Brazilian government to be immunized against the mosquito-borne virus, though the CDC recommends travelers be vaccinated before visiting endemic areas. Risk areas cover all or part of 19 of the nation's 26 states.

Although the risk of people contracting the disease is low, travelers going to Yellow Fever endemic areas from most Asian countries will be required to have proof of Yellow Fever vaccination ON RETURNING to Asia in many instances. There have been incidents in the past where some travelers have been refused entry back into Asia for not having proof of Yellow Fever vaccination when coming from a Yellow Fever endemic country. With this particular alert, scrutization by immigration officials will most likely be heightened. In addition the requirement is that the vaccination be given at least ten days before returning to Asia.

Please note that Yellow Fever vaccination can only be given at a limited number of governmental/travel clinics in most countries and this vaccine is not available at the majority of private/international clinics throughout the world. It is valid for a period of ten years.

For people on business or vacation in South America, particularly Brazil, and Central Africa please ensure that you have the necessary vaccinations and keep documented proof of this with you at all times when traveling.

JJTourist agencies are full of misinformation. When you enter Brasil, the immigration police will check your passport and visa if one is required for your country. They might ask how long you intend to stay but they do not normally look at your airline tickets. Brasil police do not care when, or from where you depart for home, you just need to leave Brasil within 90 days or get an extension of your visa. Do not overstay your visa without an official extension or it will be very inconvenient to depart.

In my opinion your tourist agent is not correct. I would go to another agent or call the closest Brazilian Consulate or call the airline. One persons opinion does not mean much.

In my 30 + trips to Brazil I have never ever been asked for a return ticket upon entering Brazil. My understanding of your situation is that it is perfectly normal to have a return ticket 5 months out, nothing unusual about that. Particularly in that you will be travelling to other destinations.

A few years ago I was asked by the immigration officer at RIO airport to show him my return/onward ticket. That happened only once. In another occasion I was asked the same by the check-in agent of Varig at Caracas airport. I was flying to RIO.

I have friends who enter Brasil in Fortaleza, from Europe, every year with return tickets six month later with no problem. They must extend their initial 90 days entry visa though.

So in my opinion you will not have any problem as long as you have an onward ticket. Simply your travel agent is not correct.

Regards,

JJ

I just returned to Brazil from the US with the return leg of my ticket that I bought in Brazil. In other words, with no ticket taking me out of Brazil.

The checkin clerk insisted on seeing my Brazilian residency ID and got pissed when I asked why she needed to see that.

I guess they would have denied me boarding.

A few years ago I went from Brazil to the US with a one way ticket (or the return leg) from Brazil. I was denied boarding. I tried to buy a returnable one way ticked back but did not manage to do so quickly enough.

The Rio clerk showed me the regulations: "people from Europe with Visa waiver need a return ticket". To no avail I explained him that I had a visa, and thus this did not apply to me, and that I was heading for Asia from the US.

It always is safest to have a ticket leaving the country.

Now the 5 month return certainly raises flags. If you don't have a penalty, you always are safer if you change your return date. Again, you probably get by with it by having a good excuse (best that you leave the country and go to Argentina for 3 months).

This topic of being asked to see return ticket has gotten me a little curious. But then, we are all professionals here, and tend to push the envelop quite often. From my experience, I've only needed to show flight info once, that was with my initial visa application. But, maybe I'm missing something.

In my search for more and more information about getting to Brasil as often as possible, I've come across a number of people that have hook-ups that they are sometimes willing to share. I'm considering flying standby to Brasil in Dec., but returning with a paid ticket. The only purpose of a paid return ticket is that after the holidays, there's a mad exodus, and I want to have an actual seat. Maybe it's not worth it, I'm just looking at cheaper options.

I also have contact with a woman that has a travel company that speacializes in fare to Latin America. I've never used them before, but she once sent me a 1 flight plan that was interested. Detroit to Chicago to Miami to Rio. Starting at 6am and arriving at 10:55pm. I'm still working on her to get me more info which I will share here.

That happened to me once also. Problem was I had no return ticket, as mine was an E-ticket. He asked how long I was staying, (2 wks). All I had was my itinerary. The Immigration Officer didn't know what to do. Then another Officer came by and said, he's a tourist. Grudgingly, he stamped my passport. Musta thought I wasn't going to leave.

Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for all the replies. Greatly appreciated!! So just to put things into a clearer perspective!! I plan to arrive in Brazil around December time and Fly from Colombia or venezuela home five months later.

My trip over all is a backpacking/hoor mongering expedition. I plan to travel by bus (train service in South America anyone??) to each country. I will arrive in Brazil with a return ticket. The return ticket is not until after 5months. Longer than my 90days tourist allowance in Brazil. I dont plan to stay in brazil that long. They however dont know that. I plan to fly home from one of the countries metioned above. I plan to try and visit and monger/ meet chics over the NET from every country over there incl the three obscure coutries: GUY, FGUY and SUR.

I think i may have the solution!! If after i buy these tickets i could buy a flight over the net before i arrive from Brazil to Ven/Col after i decide which one to fly out of on my way home!! This ticket which i dont plan to use anyway could be purchased for a date after 2.5months of my arrival in Brazil. I could then show it to customs upon my arrival if im queried about the duration/circumstances of my arrival. That leaves me with another 2.5 months in the other country i fly into then if i was to use that ticket. (The only cost to me would be the price of that ticket which im sure wouldnt be too high anyway if i dont use it!! and possbily refundable but thats a bridge i can cross later!!)

What do you think?? If i arrive in Brazil with a forward ticket for after 2.5months to a country which i fly back to Europe from, i really feel there is no chance in hell they would stop me!! Right?? What do you think!!! The only problem left then is crossing each borders by bus which i hear arent a problem anyway!! that wouldnt be a problem anyway after im left with only three months to go home as im sure each country has a simmilar 90days policy for EU residents.

Any input lads?? Hey Edward-M,no im Irish but i will fly from France!! Shouldnt read to much into the names!! Do you think my mother calls me John jay?? lol
Also anyone around when im there feel free to look me up!! Villa Mimosa is deeeefinelty in my plans!! Cant wait!! Cheap and sleezy- my kind of place!! been a poor mature student for the last few years so time to beak out!!:))

Over and out!

sure sounds like fun.

But be aware, South America is not like France, and even in France if you go to the wrong suburbs of Paris you might risk your life. Get lots of info or be less adventurous, staying to well know routes and parts of cities ......

If you don't mind having money tied up for a year, buy an expensive ticket that is fully refundable for a year. Such tickets exist for executive travellers.

If you have one such ticket to your next destination from where you already have a ticket home, that should suffice but would be good to verify with immigration.

So if you come with USA-Rio. Rio - Colombia. Colombia USA you should be fine.

You might get the Rio Colombia refunded via internet during your trip without physically returning the ticket. You might even get by with a ticket closer to the border to Colombia, or at least Sao Paulo Colombia. Does not need to depart from same city, but would be good if it were half way close

What do you think?? If i arrive in Brazil with a forward ticket for after 2.5months to a country which i fly back to Europe from, i really feel there is no chance in hell they would stop me!! Right??

I just said so before I read this. Right.
Now if you have too many country crossings, there would be, of course a risk. You should check travel/backpacking sites.

Also study criminality. All this might be dangerous. Your backpack has 1 year's worth of salary.

I was just reminded that my new jogging shoe, regular price in US for 90 dollars, sale price 45 dollars, Rio price R$ 350 or more would be grounds to be robbed and walk home barefoot. Even in Copacabana, certainly in the wrong neighborhoods.

There also is an extremely dangerous modality: they hold you hostage, or even kill you, while they max out your atm card every day. Great business

What do you think!!! The only problem left then is crossing each borders by bus which i hear arent a problem anyway!! that wouldnt be a problem anyway after im left with only three months to go home as im sure each country has a simmilar 90days policy for EU residents.

you better verify .............. but most likely are right

better and cheaper places then Vila Mimosa, I might join you for the fun. Not sure if you can convince me to go to VM, but I certainly show you places I think are better and cheaper or equally priced ..............

potential stay at my place (I rent suites in my apartment, PM for more info, send your email address if you don't have private message privileges). You get lots of savings just from my advice, and reduced security risk.

print the e-ticket

Looks better then an itinerary

But if the itinerary looks personal, with flight times, your name, price etc it probably should suffice

That is an interesting question as nowadays nobody has a REAL ticket. I think if they have doubts it is up to them to call the airline. Probably right at the same airport ............

There is a place cheaper than VM? Wow! From reading this Forum i find that hard to believe-it must be for free then!!-

As for dating sites i recommend hotornot.com,tagged.com or hi5.com. I am in my late twenties so i can still pull the lovely young friendly ones. Even if i was Brad Pitt which im not id still hobby. Love the thrill. Being mongering for nearly ten years and love the thrill of going out on the prowl.

Notice my preference for cheap and sleezy as mentioned earlier. Great posts by you Sperto!! Being having a great read thanks!! you remind me of Wan-king and Jackyo on the German Partytreff forum.

Any guys want to meet up in December just PM me or write on the FF.

Cheers again!!

greetings fellow mongers,

so finally i made my mind to hit rio been reading a lot about the termas lumo pronunced humo, centrerus, 4x4 etc escorts on rio hot side, cia, helpeee disco balcony so what made me relcutant the crime and safety in rio but what the heck i will do my best so skip thailand after 2 times in the row as well as prague and dubai i am dying for that hot brazillian chicks with their rounded asses.

yet here is the problem i am on a budget i mean obviously guys i envy you since fellow americans and europeans got cool and decent package as for me i from egypt my national air lines does fly to south america and the best deal i got is a ticket on air france at the sum of 1550. us$ other airlines are exremely expensive such at lufthanza, iberia it is above 2500. us$ damn the fuel prices are flying high.

so now i am willing to go there in new year eve another for 12days all in rio another problem i was aming to stay at altantico copacabana hotel gf next to lumo nice and safe i did my home work since i am new gringo who is trying to learn portguese as suggested by your good self i will not rent appartment i will even order a transfer from the airport the problem is my agent is telling me that the hotel is full booked and that i will never find a decent hotel for not less than 250 us$ and per night since it is the peak and that on the from 29 till 30 the price for the room will not be less than 350 us$ i have noticed that the atlantico copacabana are quoting 116. us$ i have already send them e-mail and waiting for their reply so in case they are fully booked or beyond my tight budget (not more than 120. us$) can you guys help me any recommendation i noticed from the prior report that you mentioned rio rioss and debret hotel but i am not sure their status gf or not

as for my budget for mongering, food and taxis do you think that 4000. real (approx. 2325 us$)will be enough for 12 days. will i be ok or is it too tight that i will be in short of cash

one more thing my agent advised me if i want the better price i should skip the new year eve all prices are back to normal of course i am aware of the carnival which starts in february so guys what are your suggestions shall i skip the new year at rio and what alternatives for my accomodation do you suggest.

thanks guys for taking the time to read my report

Greetings fellow Mongers, ...my agent is telling me that the hotel is full booked and that I will never find a decent hotel for not less than 250 us$ and per night since it is the peak and that on the from 29 till 30 the price for the room will not be less than 350 US$ I .. shall I skip the new year at Rio and what alternatives for my accomodation do you suggest.Your agent is right about the high season. New Years and Carnaval hotel and apartment prices are generally 50% to 100% higher priced in these holidays. I suggest avoiding the periods 12/25. 01/03, and 02/18. 02/28. Debret is no longer guest friendly. You can register one guest for the period of your stay. Debret does not allow you to have multiple companions. If you stay at a hotel, breakfast is usually included so you only need to pay for lunch and dinner. Lunch will cost from R$15 to R$30; dinner entrees at restaurants run from R$25 to R$45 plus drinks. If you have a guest, double these costs. You can save on taxi fares by using onibus and Metro, (I. E. Taxi to centro is about R$20, Metro is about R$2, 30.) Mongering depends on your negotiating skills and number of active days. You should plan on R$300 per opportunity. When you get to "A Cidade Maravelhosa, " if your dick starts doing your thinking for you, it will be easy to exceed this budget.

Be careful out there.

I can't recall I ever heard about problems with breaking in apartments in Rio. Most apartmentbuildings have porteiros and often surveillance cameras.

The only risk is if you bring a girl to the apartment and she steals from you.

Cooking? I do like cooking (specially when the girls cook for me) but that's not the main reason to choose an apartment.

It all depends on the building. I know several Rio residents whose apartments or those of their neighbors have been burglarized. Perfect example of how things can change was an apartment I rented recently. The porteiro during the day was great. However, he took a couple of days off and some young punk with keys took over. It did not give me a good feeling. Add to that I usually had to wake the night porteiro up to get in, I did not feel particularly safe in that building.

Manaus. Nice place.

What brings you there? not the typical gringo destination.

Do a 1-3 day boat tour to the jungle, it is very nice (make sure you get all your meds in order, a friend of mine caught Malaria). Otherwise be safe and stay well inside town.

Wish I was there in Manaus, but I am stuck in Rio, poor me ........

Do your homework, find bars, find streetgirl places, make sure you don't get set up with minors, use taxi drivers to show you the brothels and street girl places.

I was planning for a New Years trip to Brazil (Salvador) when I noticed **non-stop** flights on AA during mid-week. Up to now, only TAM had non-stops to Salvador from Miami on Sundays only.

I checked AA's website and learned that AA is starting 3 new flights to Brazil in November. One is form Miami to Belo Horizonte, and the other two are from Miami to Salvador and Recife.

The flight to Salvador is non-stop from Miami, then stops in Recife, and is non-stop return to Miami from Recife.

For Northeast aficiondos like myself, this is EXCELLENT news! There is a fare special until February so I think the fares will be lowish until spring. I found a fare for $1,300. That is low for the holiday season. I hope oil falls some more.

I am glad they finally will have a direct flight to Recife, it is my favorite place in Brazil. $1,300 though is somewhat steep to me. Right now I can get a TAM ticket for roughly $900 roundtrip but it stops in Sao Paulo first. I guess I would be willing to pay a little more for a direct flight, at least now I will have the option. Great news and I too hope oil continues to fall. :)

American Airlines just announced new service to three Brazilian destinations - Belo Horizonte, Recife, and Salvador. To celebrate, they're offering flights starting at just $425 each way. That's a savings of around $200 roundtrip for most of these routes! Travel is valid on select dates Nov. 24 - May 28.

I am getting some little things ready for a late January 2009 trip to Rio. This will be my second trip to Rio. The last time was about a year and a half ago. Last time I went I used a company called visaexpress.net to get my Visa. It was a piece of cake. I went to their site to grab the paperwork to start getting it all filled out and low and behold, here is what I find on their site.

"Please note: our company doesn't accept Brazil tourist visa application from the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington."

Well, I live in one of those states. I am wondering if anyone knows what the heck this is all about and if there are any websites that cater to these states listed above. I think my actual physical Brazilian consulate is San Francisco which is 8 hours away. Don't get me wrong, if I have to make a special trip or two to San Fran I certainly will.

So I went to another website. And here is what I found. The site is brazil.visahq.com.

"Effective August 1st, 2008, VisaHQ.com will only be able to provide Brazil tourist visas for residents of the following states and territories: CT, DC, DE, FL, KY, MD, NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, WV, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands. Applicants will need to provide proof of residency, such as a copy of driver's license or utility bill."

And again, the state where I live is not listed. This is just bizarre. I am sure there has to be some companies that serve the state where I live which is Oregon. Does anyone know anything about why at least these two companies don't server my state as well as a bunch of other states? And do you know of any reliable companies that do serve Oregon. Thanks for your help.

Ok, back to the whole getting a Brazil Visa thing. I am sure I will find a company that will be able to get me one without having to go to San Francisco. The question I have is regarding the application process. I think pretty much all of the companies that handle Visa's as well the consulates themselves require a copy of the itinerary. Does this have to be valid itinerary? Does anyone verify in anyway with the airlines that this is in fact valid. I am planning on going and I know I have to go within 90 days of getting the Visa, but I want to be somewhat flexible and might not have the exact dates down pat. So I thought I could easily produce an itinerary so I can get the whole Visa thing done and out of the way.

The second questions and I know it has been discussed before is what are the realistic chances of getting a 5 year Visa vs the standard one which I think is good for 90 days? I would like to get the 5 year one just in case I plan on going back to Brazil and so I do not have mess around with this again. If I apply for the 5 year Visa and for whatever reason it is not granted, do I get the 90 day one instead or would I have to re-submit for the 90 day one?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help.Visa expediters must have offices located within the jurisdiction of their respective consulates, i.e. VisaHQ.com services residents only in the jurisdiction of the Consulate of Washington, DC.

(1.) The Consulate General of San Francisco web site has a list of visa expediters that service their jurisdiction. See: http://www.brazilsf.org/visa_agencies_eng.htm

(2.) The Consulate will want to see a copy of your confirmed round-trip itinerary (e.g. E-ticket) to verify that your travel is in compliance with their regulations on the purpose, period and length of time for your travel. (e.g. is it tourist, business or education? Will you enter the country within 90 days and stay not longer than 90 days.) Important: You must enter the country within 90 days of receipt of visa or you may be denied entry.

(3.) The $130.00 fee is for a tourist visa that is good for multiple entries for a period of 5 years from date of issue.

First of all, you don't need to use a visa service to get a Brazil tourist visa. That is just a waste of money. I have had 3 5-year visas and have never used a service. You simply need to find out which consulate covers your state--in your case it appears to be San Francisco--and read the requirements for applying for a visa. Then send everything--application with photos, passport, copy of your ticket, itinerary, a postage-paid return Express Mail envelope, and money order for the fee--to the consulate. The consulate website should tell you how much time it will take to process your application.

As far as getting a 5-year visa, from what I have read on this forum, there is no guarantee. I always company my application with a cover letter requesting a 5-year visa because I am a frequent visitor to Brazil. So far I have always been successful. And what Poucolouco says is true: if you don't use your visa within 90 days it becomes void, and you'll have to apply for another one. Good luck.

Ok, maybe I am confused, here is what it says on the San Fran Consulate website.

"C. All visa applications must be submitted in person, by the applicant, or by an authorized third party (a family member, friend, co-worker, travel agency, visa service). "

Now I do not have any family, friends, or co-workers in San Fran. San Fran is 500 miles away. So I have to drive to get to San Fran or use a service. To top it off it also says this on the consulate website. "D. After all documentation is received by the Consulate, tourist visa applications take a minimum period of 7 (seven) business days to be processed. "

So really for me personally, the small amount for having a service take care of it is worth it.

I am aware of having to use the Visa within 90 days of it being issued. That is very clear. And after my last trip to Brazil on the way back to the US there was a hot girl on the plane who did not pay attention to this and they literally turned her around in Rio and put her right back on a plane to the US.

I still did not get my questions really answered. The one question was regarding why I now have to use a Visa service in a certain area where as a year and a half ago that rule was not in place. Does anyone know what changed and why. Just wondering.

The second question was regarding submitting one itinerary with the application to prove to them that one is going within the 90 days I suppose. Does anyone know how closely that is checked? The reason I asked is because while I do have some pretty firm dates in mind for the trip, I don't actually have my plane ticket booked yet. So my thought was if I doctored up a fake itinerary just so I can get this Visa processed, does the itinerary get actually verified in some way. If all they are doing is looking at it and making sure it meets the criteria, I don't think it will be a problem. But if they are actually in some way verifying with the airlines that this is a valid ticket, then I do not want to chance it by submitting a fake one. I hope that makes some sense.

I know I could just wait until I actually purchase a ticket and then submit the VISA application as it does not take very long, I just want a little flexibility just in case I decide to stay a day or two longer.

Hmm, I didn't know this, so I stand corrected. I was basing what I said on my experience with another Consulate, specifically Miami. Strange that some consulates accept mail applications and others don't. You'd think there would be consistency.

I did check the San Francisco Consulate's site out of curiosity and it does appear that you must have a plane ticket before you apply for a visa and submit a copy with your visa application. This is consistent with other consulates.

Just a well-meaning suggestion for people wanting to hook up (and I'm not even volunteering) - suggest buying dinner instead of a drink if you want to do a favour. Dinner's not expensive, whereas you can get a beer for less than 50cents.

Of course, I'll show anyone around that picks up my bill for a dupla at 4x4 . . . ;) ;)

I would guess the San Francisco would be about the same.

Will be in Rio in less than two weeks now for my fourth trip in 3 years. Am going with a Dominican girl from the U.S. but I broke it off about a month ago in preparation for this trip. She is staying at a hotel in Ipanema and I'm renting an apt. in copa. Will probably meet up with her for a few tourist activities but for mongering activities I'll be on my own and would like to hang with fellow mongers around during that time.

My purpose in letting her go with me originally was that I thought she'd be in to threesomes with other women but as time went on it became clear that she wanted me as her boyfriend and wasn't interested in anyone else. What a bummer! Anyone in town during this period can feel free to PM me.

Try contacting Delta and tell them you purchased the ticket weeks ago and since then the price went down. At a minimum they should give you a credit good for a year on a future flight. If you used American Express try contacting them and tell them the story and see if they can get your money back, sometimes they do.

My flight to Rio on American has dropped by $500 since I purchased the ticket. I called them to see if I could get a refund or credit. I was informed that I could get a refund but they would charge me a $250 change fee and give me the difference of $250. I said that nothing on my itinerary is changed - all the flights are the same - the only change is the lower price so why I am being charged a change fee? Their response was that they would have to reissue the ticket because the lower price was in a different inventory and a reissuance constitutes a change. This is a rip-off!!!!!!!!

It is a total rip-off - the airlines want to have it BOTH ways. On the one hand, when fuel is lower, they rarely lower their fares for most of their routes; and when fuel is higher, they want to raise fares. We, the consumer get 'screwed' (or when we want to screw) all the time.

I was going to Colombia a few weeks ago on Avianca. I got to the airport 2 1/2 hours before my flight. I spent an hour (at least) waiting in line to get my ticket and it took me a good hour - 90 minutes to get through security checkpoint. I got to my gate and they had just closed it. Missed the flight. Went back to the desk and they said don't worry there is a flight to Bogota, there is plenty of room and you will get a seat. I was flying stand by though. I get through security again, get to the gate and there are ten people flying standby. No seats available for me. It happened one more time this way this time on a flight to Medellin. I go back to the desk again after spending all day at the airport and they regret to inform me that there are no more flights to Colombia that day. AND..... since it is not same day travel I will have to buy another ticket if I wish to fly tomorrow. Fucking thieves. I was so pissed I just put my trip off, no way was I going to buy another ticket after going through all that. My feeling is that they over book all flights to ensure maximum capacity. The sad part is I have to go back to Colombia soon and will probably have to use them again because they have the cheapest fares. :(

Delta sends me a letter at my parent's house that I have 11, 000 SkyMiles and would I like to sign up for a credit card for ONLY $95 a year. I hate Dreaded Delta, would rather walk than use their airline. My mother asks if I can transfer the miles to her. To do so, I have to sign on to the account, using a PIN, which I have no idea of. I contact Delta, they want to know past addresses and itineraries, going back, eventually, twenty years ago. Who can remember all this? I use Google Earth, find houses I used to live in, get the addresses, nothing is acceptable. Delta keeps wanting more and more information, requiring more and more time and effort. I tell them to stuff it, I don't care about their miles.

KT,

With all that is going on with the economy and the cancelling of thousands of flights, there will be less seats on all flights. When this happens, capacity of planes will be fuller, there will be more people arriving earlier and earlier. so instead of arriving at airports 2-2 1/2 hours for international travel it will be 3-4 hours. Domestic flights will be 3 hours soon.

I would expect last 2 weeks in November might be best for airfare and hotel pricing to be reasonable, some places up their prices on December 1st. Avoid the last 2 weeks in December as Airfare, Hotels and apartment rentals are more difficult to book and more costly. Plus ther will be more competition for the garotas.

with all due respect.

you should have asked for an avianca hostess while waiting for the security check. in situations like that they advance passengers through security or immigration lines so they don't miss their flights.

or even advance your self to a security supervisor and explain to him your situation. they are all there to help passengers not to make them miss their flights. speek up, make some noise to attract their attention and make them help you.

Occasionally there have been some concerns about obtaining a visa; I found and used this service which I was very satisfied with. Living in the Midwest and many hours from the Consulate in Chicago, I looked for another option opposed to personally traveling to Chicago.

The company I found is based out of Houston and is therefore outside the Midwest jurisdiction. I called twice and both times they confirmed this would not be a problem. Looking at my invoice right now, the fee was $140 for the Consulate, $49 for the service fee, $20 for FEDEX shipping method which equals $209. 00. I also paid the post office to ship my information to them overnight which was around another 20 bucks. So the total being somewhere around $230. Basically paying $90 extra on top of the Consulate fee versus driving the many hours plus the time involved, not that bad of a option at all.

There were two options available for return service, 5 business days versus 10 business. I chose 10 days. I mailed all the information on a Wednesday and got my stamped visa the following Thursday, and this even included Columbus Day when the Consulate was closed! So in fact they got my visa returned in 5 business days, even though I did not request that.

Some other things would be that I called them on Friday to make sure they received my information, and also I was a little bit weary sending my information out of jurisdiction, etc. The receptionist confirmed that they had received it and everything was a go, and they only contact the sender if anything in the application was incomplete. She also added that I could call at anytime during the process to check on the status, which I didn't do. I filled out the application with a ballpoint pen. When I got the Visa returned it was stamped for 5 years! I mentioned "multiple visits" somewhere on it. Overall, this was a positive transaction.

One thing I'd like to add is on the brazilian consualte page for Chicago. "Due to changes in the system for producing consular documents, until further notice, the Consulate General in Chicago now request 15 business days to process the visa. For services requested by mail the period is extended to four weeks. "

Like I mentioned, I got this back from Houston in 5 business days, outside of jurisdiction. I hope this helps and someone can find this useful. PM me for what service I used.

I doubt anyone would like to monger after that. In flight fire warning is a very serious matter. Especially if it makes the captain to decide to return back.

TAP, as have 67 flights per week between Europe (Portugal) and Brazil, will in the low-season only, reduce their flights to Brazil from Europe. It is only talk about reduction, no destination will be taken away.

The reductions is following : Rio/Porto from 3 to 2, Sao Paulo/Porto from 3 to 2, Rio/Lisbon, from 12 to 10; Recife to Lisbon, from 7 to 6 and Natal/Lisbon, from 5 to 4.

I dont know the economic condition of TAP, but hopefully this is a smart move in advance, to avoid future problems.

Ok, this is my last ditch effort. I have run out of options.

I need a tourist visa to go to Brazil on 11/21/08. The Los Angeles embassy won't process it unless the paperwork is turned in 10 days in advance. I don't have that time, especially since my ticket is already booked.

The only way they will do it is to get an email note from a doctor in Brazil saying this it is a family emergency, so I'm looking to see if anyone here has contacts in Brazil that can make this happen.

I'm will to pay $150 for this email note and should be very easy. I can do paypal for payment. If you can help, them PM me!

Thanks, and hope to see you in Brazil...

If you renounce your US citizenship and come and live in Europe, you won't need a visa for Brasil and won't need to send money back to Uncle Sam ;)

Of course it doesn't solve the problem of flying thru LAX - even if your luggage is checked thru you have to go through hours of eye-scans, ID checks, intrusions into your personal details and so on. Think I paid about $150 more last time to avoid that hassle!

and hope to see you in Brazil...

fingers crossed and good luck :)

Did you try an agency that specializes in obtaining brazilian visas? I just did a google search for "tourist visa brazil" and I saw multiple agencies that offer expedited service. I even saw one that said they might be able to get the visa in 24 hours.

Good luck!

Yes, I tried the Travel services initially and said no, that was Monday. As more desperation sets in and the fact that my vacation is in ruin, I gave in to an Agency at the Embassy to see if they can get it sooner. I am hoping 11/25/08, but I still would need to rebook my ticket.

There was this guy from a service who said he can get it done in 24 hours when no one else said they could for $400 cash, which he would use to pay off the supervisor to process faster. I almost said yes, but is was too risky, he could just walk away with the money and everything.

I agree, Los Angeles is very tough Embassy and rude.

I depart for Rio on January 21 and will arrive in Rio on the morning of the 22nd. If anyone is interested in hooking up for a drink, a bite to eat, or just to shoot the shit, let me know. I will be departing Rio and coming back to the states late night on the 26th of January.

The plan is as follows:

On the 22nd, I will be in 4 x 4. Will probably be there most of the night and have two sessions. Hard to tear myself away from that place.

On the 23rd, I will also be at 4 x 4. Not sure if I will do two sessions or not. Planning on hitting one or more of the strip clubs there in Rio just to check them out. I do not plan on taking anyone back to the apt with me from those clubs as from what I have read is too expensive and the service is not all that great. Hopefully being at 4 x 4 will keep little Willy down when I get to the strip clubs.

On the 24th, what I hope to do is get a girl to come to the apartment. Preferably a girl from 4 x 4 who I met on one of the previous two nights and hope to do an allnighter with her. Cross my fingers that this works out ok. If this does not pan out, I may venture over to Help for my virgin experience there. Plan C is to hit a termas that is open on a Saturday.

On the 25th, plan to hit a termas that is open on a Sunday. I think Luomo is but cannot remember for sure. Will look at my notes when I get there.

On the 26th, plan to hit 4 x 4 again. I love that place. Then back to the apartment, freshen up and off to the airport for an 11 pm flight out. I hope I don't cry when I leave.

As always, plans are subject to change for any reason and can change on a dime.

During the daytime I would like to spend a little time at the beach provided the weather is cooperative. Also, I plan to check out Mia Pataca (spelling?) at least once during the day time for a bite to eat and who knows what else I might encounter.

I am sure somewhere along the trip I will eat here and there. Last time I was there I ate at Marius which was killer awesome but a bit pricy. May look to try something else but honestly searching out good food is not high on my list mainly from a time perspective.

Also, I do not plan on doing really any sightseeing. Of course, it all depends on how I feel. I certainly am not going to cut into pussy time to go sightseeing not for anyone.

I can't wait for this trip to get here. I seriously wish I had about two weeks to spend in the area. That way I would not have to push myself too hard with the ladies and I could get some sightseeing in and sample the local cusine a lot better. But with 4 nights and 5 days for the trip, one has to have their priority.

One last thing. What I would like to do is put together a comprehensive reports of my trip. I am not going to make any promises to anyone so if I do not come through with this, don't give me any crap.

One thing I will do for certain is write about my trip. You can count on that. I will also take some photos, as many as I can but what I decide to put up I will decide later. I also plan on doing some video. I picked up one of those Flip video cameras, the High Def one, and hope to do a lot of video as well. One thing I do not see is a lot of videos of what guys are diong there. No, I do not necessarily want to see any of you banging chicks necessarily, but I would not mind seeing some of chicks in video. I have only seen very few guys post any sort of videos over all the reading of this board and other boards. I am not sure why there has not been more video, but maybe I will find out.

I then plan to put this all together and set up a adult blog website and share it all. I might find that it is all too much work and you will only get the written word part of it. Who knows, it remains to be seen.

If you have any good suggestions in regards to the whole picture, story and video plan, please do share your insights. I am sure there are some ideas I have not even thought of to consider. Right now, my main thoughts are I hope I find some really hot women there and have a blast in more ways than one.

Looking ahead a bit, dunno if anyone would be up for this - Russian State Ballet is on in Teatro Municipal (March 28th at 8pm and 30th at 5pm). It's an awesome building in case you haven't been to a show there. Worth dressing up. But a drag if you want to nip along to VM afterwards. :D

Of the Carnaval-associated events I quite fancy one of the ones at Cinelandia, partly cos it's again an awesome building (saw KillBill 1&2 back to back and premieres there) and partly cos I can't afford Copa Palace. ;)

I'm up for both, i.e. Ballet and VM. Is this for February and where can I find out what they will be performing?Ooops, sorry - forgot to mention the Teatro doesn't open till March - those are March dates. Will try to edit the post. As to what they're performing I've never found their PR very forthcoming except in person (and that can be sloooow).

Coming from Teatro to VM is quite a challenge. I tried it one year (not overly dressed up - sitting in the gods in a 20R jacket I'd bought on arrival the day before). Came out the opera and the taxi driver - yes, I was feeling posh enough to get a taxi* - refused to believe anyone coming out of Teatro wanted to go to VM and insisted he'd never heard of the place. Which of course is like him saying he doesn't speak portuguese.

*you have to walk a whole hundred yards for a bus to VM from Teatro as the traffic's heading the wrong way, towards Copa.

I doubt it. I say that because I have noticed that American Airlines has dropped its prices, while Delta is raising its prices. I saw some good AA rates in March.

But, those of us who have been going to Rio for years (some decades), we know Delta has been a small player in the Rio market anyway.
Continetal ,American, United, (and once Varig) have always been the big boys. Watch the rates on these airlines.

Traditionally, Delta used its Rio planes to carry cargo!!! I remember back in 2002 when a bunch of guys who flew on standby could not get on a half-empty plane. One guy I know was stuck for 2 days. The planes were full (they use the weight, not number of people), despite being half-empty.
Only recently did Delta begin focusing on flying people to Rio.

Hi all,

I leave for Rio in a week's time. First visit, excited but apprehensive.

I'm there for six days - mongering + sights, plus a footie match.

On the mongering front I'll be playing it easy and probably limiting to just the main termas and some escorts. If I can get an overnight or two that would be good (I'm got an apartment, so no restrictions).

Advice please on photos.
Is it easy to get them to agree?
Just photos, or video as well?
Any tactics I should use?
Any Portugese phrases that might help?

I've had a good read of the forums but would be grateful for any special pieces of advice - on any topic - to help my short trip go well. After Rio, I'm off to Iguazu, BA, and Santiago - it will be interesting to compare what's on offer.

I'm intending to write up reports.

Thanks to all for the help on the forums - great advice and entertainment!

Wow, nice itinerary!

I don't think there's any rule about photos. They will or they won't. I usually leave it till they are nice and chilled before asking, usually with a little smile and miming the press of a shutter - whatever works for you.

To be honest, if it's your first week in Rio, your feet will not touch the ground. Plan, plan, plan. You'll need them! :D

And have a ball.

I know this is a bit in advance, but I'm traveling solo to Rio April 9-17 and would love to meet up with somebody who can be a wingman to this newbie (not to the hobby, but to this locale). It is my first time going to Rio, I've read the posts here on ISG and Bwana's guide but figure some in person guidance would be helpful.

If anybody will be in town around those dates, please contact me and let's see what we can arrange. First drink is on me!

Apartment is already booked, just counting down the days.

Hey guys,

I'm going to be in Copa from the 24th of April til the 30th. I'm not looking for a wingman as such, was just thinking it would be great to catch up with some of you like-minded people.

PM me if you're going to be in the area and hopefully we can go and have a chat over a couple of beers somewhere.

Cheers!

Warning:

On my return from Rio in Jan., a Brazilian male on my Coninental flight pushed his used soda cup and can in my arms. I slapped the stuff away and heard gasps from the people around him. It became apparent that he assumed I was a service worker because of the color of my skin. They watched me walk to my seat and then began chattering loudly in Portuguese.

Warning:
Now that Varig no longer flies from the US many Brazilians are taking up space on US airlines. Be aware that many of them look down on Americans so take precautions.

TJI do not know what color you are or what the color of a stereotypical flight attendant is and I have flown over 100 times. Maybe your shirt's color was similar to the flight crew?

Hey,

Everyone is different - I think its a matter of how much you want to spend and how much privacy you require. I like to stay in a decent hotel room for the first 1 - 2 nights so I can get over the jet lag and sleep well. Then before or right after check out I would go look at a few apartments. After your first trip you will make contacts so the next time will be easier.

YOU can look into multiple apt rental agencies first and get some quotes. Write down their contact info - phone number and business location. Then when you are in Rio, call and ask to see whats available for your remaining days. This is VERY IMPORTANT because now you can see the place before putting down a deposit on what might be a crappy apt.

Have fun and stay safe.

This is very important, if you think the girls from Karla models are too much photoshopped....go to see the pictures of flats in some agency and then check the same flat live....never pay without to see the flat in advance and do not check it in 1 minute, but take at least 6-8 minutes, check everywhere, often at first look it looks nice and once you live you discover that you are living inside a shitty flat...as happened to me in january here....

So I will be arriving on Tuesday March 10th for a 10 day stay in Rio. This is my 3rd visit, so I am some what experienced. Do to scheduling conflicts, my wingman won't be arriving until the 13th so I'm on my own for the first 3 days. If any of you fellow mongers want to get together and grab a beer or hit a terma, send me a PM. Thanks.

Prices for late March are at a low right now. I just went online and the same ticket I bought in january for late March arrival in Rio is now $400 less on Continental. I am quite pissed, of course.

From CA you can get to Rio around $850, while it was $1200 in Jan.
To make things worse, Continental is dropping out of Skyteam in June, so they are no longer allowing Skyteam elites some benefits. I had to call in just to get preferred seats on the plane. Once you could do this online.

I called CO this morning and all they could say was sorry. They claimed it was high gas prices that forced them to raise rates in Jan. Now with price lower they say they can lower prices.

I do not believe them. I believe they jacked up rates in Jan. for periods before and after Carnaval to get suckers. Now rates are back to what they normally are post-Carnaval. Next year I will not take the bait! Then again I will be on Delta next year anyway!

CA is usually a little bit more than Chicago, but still I paid over a thousand and I bought the ticket, for March, in january!

Well, if i see you in Rio you I will be the guy holding his pants up with shoestrings and begging for loose change at MP and in front of Help. Continental got all of my money.

Not really! I will make up the difference by sticking with girls I know who do not charge me much. Plus, at least I am going to Rio. Lots of guys would love to be in our shoes!

Is a visa needed? I here it costs $200? If that is the case, how do you go about getting it before your trip? Thanks

Italy 1974
03-19-09, 07:56
It depends from which country you come from.

I -as Italian citizen- don't need a visa for staying up to 90 day.

I guess you are from Usa; in that case you definitely need a visa.

The cheaper one is the tourist visa that allow you to stay in Brazil up to 30 days.

The fee for the consulate is 140 USD.

If you apply through an agency you will be usually charged a fee.

Regards,

Italy 1974

Just did this last week. The current fee for a US Passport needing a tourist visa is $130.00 It is based upon the price that Brazilians have to pay for a visa to the U.S. It is broken down as a visa fee, which is $0 and a reciprocity surcharge of $130.00, thus $130.00. If you are not presenting your passport in person, (either mailing it or using a visa service), there is a $20.00 surcharge on top of the $130, so then you are at $150.00

And of course, express mail each direction and the visa company service fee (generally around $40), if you choose to use one. If directly to the consulate, you must use USPS Express, mail, $13.85 each way.

So, your original figure of $200 ends up being pretty close. Go to:

http://www.brazilsf.org/other_consulates_eng.htm

and find the consulate that applies to where you live for more details. Note the requirement/procedures and time to approve varies from consulate to consulate.

For your info, I sent mine through a visa service in Chicago and received my visa in 6 days, including express mail times.

OK. Got into Rio and was waiting in line. Suddenly the Federalis take my and about 30 other guys' passports, pull us out of line and detain us.

They let me go third so I cannot say what happended.

They just ask me why I was in Rio and I said tourism. The guy then said are you sure. I said yes. He asked where I was staying and when they heard my address in Copa they laughed and he said this guy (me) knows where to go (or he knows what to do, it was in Porto)!

I am not sure what is going on but if you get detained do not get stressed.

Yes at customs at the airport as soon as you leave the plane. You walk through a corridor and then you get in line to enter Brazil. At that point a guy with a badge ordered about 35 of us to give him our passports. Then when we had given them to him he said get out of line and stand over here against the wall.

As I said I was third in the group detained to be let in. When I got to baggage claim all others off the plane had gotten their bags. The attendants had taken my bag off the conveyer belt and sat it on the floor. I did catch up with the last of the regular people as they were leaving the airport, however, so it was not really a long time. BAsically it was only around 10 minutes, a span of time you would probably have spent waiting on your bag anyway.

But I am not so sure how long the others were kept.

As I implied, they joked around with me, so I do not think it was all that serious. I just assume they are doing this randomly.

However, I would add that he did start taking passports at point in the line behind a black American woman. He also allowed two Japanese businessmen to stay in the regular line.

Basically, all of us were men.

The funny thing about this is that when we were in the regular line I was thinking the black woman was the only woman in the line. It was all guys (and all white and black American/European except for the 2 Japanese).
I guess the federal police noticed that too and got suspicious. But, as I said, this is Brazil. Just take it lightly and laugh it off.

US Air to start flights to Rio.
Also, on the flight down, the pilot said that Continental will start direct flights from Houston to Rio, which means no 1 hour layover in Sao Paulo.
He said this service should begin in June about the time Continental leaves the Skyteam partnership with Delta, NW for Star Alliance (right?) with United, US Air, etc.

U.S Air sucks. They nickle and dime you all over the place. $2 for a coke.
Why don't they just put it in the ticket price?
