For those looking for inexpensive tickets to GRU and GIG, check out LAN. There have been a lot of low rates lately, but the $499 plus tax that LAN has seems to be quite good. Has one stop in Lima.

Guys,

www.flycheapol.com I've been using these guys for 4+ years and they are rarely beat. My ticket for March 13th is going for $689 plus a $40 service fee so a total $729. I missed it at $649+$40 or $689 total from US west coast. They favor Continental but recently started selling "Q" class economy fares which only grant 50% elite mileage credit, bummer. The old tickets were "Y" and you recieved full elite credit. Anyway, sometimes their quotes are high so just be patient and check back regularly, they will drop. It seems the price gets better closer to your departure (??)......

PS if you need to speak/email them ask for Sara, she's very helpful...

Anyone planing a trip should reconsider using Varig, since it could leave you stranded. Varig has been close to bankruptcy for several years and it is facing a new crisis, which might end it for them unless the government steps in to save them, but according to the article it is very unlikely to happen.

Meanwhile TAM is expanding flights to Brazil, a new one to Manus to open in June and Gol is expanding its domestic and latin american flights..

Varig may be on the way out, avoid being stranded:

Government admits varig may go bankrupt and studies a plan B
Agency Estado

The possibility of Varig facing bankruptcy is already admited by sources from the government. The failure of the company is becoming more certain every day, with the worsening economic situation, and a new factor in that President Lula determined not to authorize using public funds to help the company, wich has debts of over 7 bilion.

Best will for you to take a flight to LA and from there you take a direct flight.
Brazil doesnt have direct flight to Asia. You either go thru US or Europe.
You can try AA, JAL, United, Asiana and Varig(it may go belly up). If you go thru LA, the lay over is about 3 hours.

I'm looking for Rio hotel suggestions. Will be staying with the gf in Rio next month. Would like a hotel in Copa, Ipanema or Leblon, that is nice and clean, within walking distance of the praia and not expensive. I've stayed at Marina Palace and Sol Ipanema. Both were nice but a tad pricey.

We will be spending one day at the US consulate up on Avenida President Wilson, but I am assuming that we do not want to stay near Flamengo/Gloria area.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

I just checked out Air fares to Rio up to Feb 2007 and Continental Airlines has fares $550 plus tax from Newark. this is very good as the prices recently have been in the $1000 as most of you know and I wouldn't expect these prices to last either, I just bought mine for the next trip.

Coming into town, looking for folks to hang out. I'm in my 30s, decent looking, athletic and got fair game. I know this town pretty well -- It'll be my fifth time visiting, but I'm kind of an on-and-off monger.

I'll probably live out my porn star dreams the first day, do it three, four, five times.

But I know how I am, and I'll get bored by the second or third day and look for something more edifying. Maybe head down the shore to Buzios.

Be either not-quite-so single-minded, or terribly single-minded. I think I get bored because I'm still on a bit of a mental leash. Itd be good to let my devil out some more.

Varig has been having big problems for at least a year or more and in recent weeks it is in trouble of going out of business. The employees are trying to buy it as well as others, seems to be complicated securing financing and accepting current debt. Find another carrier, forget about Varig for now. Read this board as Varigs story has been posted here by many posters.

Varig Suspends International Flights to 10 Cities (Update3)
June 21 (Bloomberg) -- Varig, the Brazilian airline that has operated in bankruptcy for a year, suspended flights to 10 international destinations including New York, Los Angeles and Madrid, after U.S. courts forced it to ground planes.

Porto Alegre, Brazil-based Varig, the country's biggest international carrier, said in a statement it will continue service to some cities abroad such as Miami, Frankfurt, London, Buenos Aires, Lima, Santiago and Caracas.

Cancellations

The carrier, which is trying to reorganize its more than 7 billion reais ($3 billion) of debt in bankruptcy, has canceled 162 of its 180 flights daily between midnight and 10:30 a.m. New York time, Brazil's airport authority said. The carrier called off 118 flights yesterday, the airport authority said.

Domestic carriers such as TAM and Gol Linhas Aereas SA are taking Varig passengers with no charge, following a contingency plan by the country's civil aviation regulator, a spokeswoman for the regulator in Brasilia said.

Travel agents are concerned cancellations will increase as of next week when Brazil's travel season begins with the school winter holidays.

``Our customers are scared,'' said Valdenice Aparecida, a travel agent at Agencia Jorge de Turismo e Passagens Ltda. in Sao Paulo. ``We have a lot of customers who bought Varig tickets asking for their money back. But it will be impossible to for them to get any reimbursement.''

Amerioca
06-23-06, 22:39
Yeah, I knew they were having some problems, however, it was a big shock to me (yesterday) when the agent stated that all flights were cancelled indefinately. I hope Varig gets it together. What flights I have taken with them were always comfortable, and on time.

I ended up booking a flight with AA for a little over a $1k (including tax). Again, it is a RT from LAX. This was the best rate available at the time.

Today, I visited the consulate in LA to apply for my visa. Man, what a-holes. As soon as I turned in the paperwork at the counter, the lady looked it over, and then marked "90-days." WTF? I asked if I could get the 5-years, and she stated, "You have no right to ask that. It is our choice what to give you." Man, what a FKN ****.

What is the deal with the visas these days? Back when, a 5-years were a given. I've heard reports of fellow mongers receiving the 90-days in the past year.

I know it's a month off, but the trip is booked so here I am. I'll be in Rio in four weeks, my first visit to Brazil. Would be interested in meeting up with seasoned veterans and wingmen for "help" (LOL) with avoiding trouble. Pretty sure I can handle the Termas, but the freelance stuff will be pretty new to me (and I am definitely interested in having a few slumber parties LOL).

I've booked the JW Marriott for now -- I know some of their other locations have been "guest friendly" (but if Rio's isn't, can someone let me know?).

Does anybody know whether other airlines accept Varig tickets on domestic flights (GOL/TAM etc)?

Have anbody been able to cancel their reservations with Varig, and get their money back? I spoke to one of the consultants, which told me that I would get my money back, but that it would take at least three months!

Frequent Flyer you are a respect and most familiar kindred spirit to your new friend - if you please - Mr. Safado. Yours truly will be landing in Rio, a cidade marvioloso [the city marvolous], this next Saturday 7/22.

This will be my luckey adventure number 13 to Brasil in the last five years. I do have a 'lega'l [cool, good - great] circle of true friends in the Rio area and have explored +/- a dozen cities/region throught the incredable world that is Brasil. I do not have the debth of experience in Brasil that you have in Asia, but I can definately share with you some valuable experience and introduce to some people that you can trust. And that is a illusionary, rare and vital commodity out there in the traveling life we lead.

Anything I can do to help you out will be small service in comparison to the scope, quanity and quality of contributions that you have offered to this ISG community.

I speak communicable Portuguese and am, with respect, your new friend Mr. Safado aka: BB from SB.

See what they have available. I am sure they have apartments available, but probably not very much.

Get an apartment if you are planning on having girls. I never stay at hotels (even guest friendly ones) it just is not worth the hassles.

Most of all have fun. Don't get too drunk at Help, Don't carry much cash, no jewelry, watches etc... never get into any beefs with the locals unless they cannot be avoided.(and then try harder to avoid them!)

Remember you are here for fun and you will be ok...

If you are around, maybe we could have a beer or something.

Oh Yea, and watch out for that Georgeous Blond chick on Ave Atlantica with the great looking tits... and the bulge from a 7" clit in her panties.

"When in doubt, check it out"

I agree with Rio Bob, you should be fine in that location, but use a taxi at night. I have stayed a couple of blocks from the fevela you mentioned, on Rual Pompeia about a year ago, I did not encounter any problems.. But always be cautious.

Guys,

I'm thinking of going to Rio with a friend in early December for 2 weeks. My friend was researching and came up with this tours gone wild for about 2K for 10 days not including food, but including lodging and transportation, and VIP classes to clubs. I don't know the value, but I'm thinking I could get a pretty nice apartment for 10 days with my friend for that and have lots to spend on the girls. I have no problems meeting women in the US, will it be easy to meet non-pros or do I have to have some connection down there to go to the cool clubs. Thanks

RxHammer
08-28-06, 08:57
Navar4500,

Is that 2k per person ? if so it's too much. Go, rent a 2 bedroom apartment and save your cash for fun.
Do you speak Portuguese? If no, forget picking up local girls in clubs, it will be extremely difficult if you can not speak to them. Some speak english but not that many. Go to the clubs and have fun (I go all the time) but keep your expectations in check. VIP passes to get in?....Not worth it IMHO.

Read Bubby Boys guide, follow it and you will have all the fun you can handle. Why waste time and energy on local girls when there are SO many girls available for pay 4 play ?? Hit the termas (they are GREAT!!) and go to Help for p4p. I like to hit the termas, hook up with a girl you like and meet her after she get off work. She can show you all the fun spots like clubs, bars, where to eat, (just like a date ! ) etc....works like a charm. You'll have a blast. Plus, if you don't speak Portuguese your chances of meeting a girl in a terma (depending on the terma) that speaks english (at least a little) is pretty good.
Feel free to PM me with any questions...(BTW i've been to Rio 30+ times in 5 years, if that helps....)

$2k for 10 days.
here's the way i see it:
a decent 2 bedroom apartment should cost $100/day. that's $1k. is tranportation and VIP passes to clubs worth another $1K to you? to give you an idea of transportation costs, a taxi cab to the airport is, like, $25 from copa, which is quite a distance. is there a "tour guide" included in this package? btw, where did you find this tour and can you provide a link?
meals are cheap in Rio. depending on what and how much and where you're drinking, your bar tab will be higher.
your connection to get into the cool clubs, is $$$.
from the sounds of it, i don't believe this package is monger oriented. I'll assume you want to monger since you're here. (anyone get a VIP passes to a termas?)
IMHO, i dont see this package as being a good value.

Guys, thanks in advance. I'll be heading down for my first trip to Rio over New Years. I have been offered an apt on Rua Raul Pompeia, just off the corner of Rua Francisco Sa between Ipanema and Copa.

Does anyone know this area? I have been warned by someone else that there is a favela nearby and that this can be a dangerous area.

If you know this neighborhood pm me or please post here to give advice.I've stayed in a hotel on Rua Francisco San and walked around the streets at all times of the day and night and didn't have a problem. Some of the adjacent streets can be a bit quiet and dark, overhanging trees, at night so I'd keep my eyes open for unscrupulous persons. Ultimately it depends on how confident you are and whether you regard yourself as a prime target for crooks, if so play it safe and get a taxi.

Guys,

Thanks for the info. I was thinking the price was too high. I speak a little spanish, but no portuguese. I was definitiely going to try pay for play but wanted to try non-pros as well. When I went to Peru, I had a girlfriend inside of a week and got some pro action too. I was hoping for a similar experience in Brazil, but maybe the language barrier will be too much.

since it includes airfare it's actually not a bad deal IMHO. i misunderstood what you meant by transportation in your original post.
R/T airfare alone cost me $1k from Chicago. i don't know what it is from SFO.
i looked at the hotels they use and maybe only one, the Ceasars Park in Ipanema may be Garota friendly. (i don't know as i only stay in apartments.) i believe the Ceasars Park charges over $100/day for a room. hopefully, someone else here can chime in on this.
it still looks like its not monger oriented. it has a "spring break" feel to it.
sounds like they're gonna take you to a bunch clubs, where you can mingle with the locals. good luck trying to pick-up a hottie. you'll also need more luck getting her into the hotel.
one other thing, since it's a tour you're locked into their activities and may find it difficult to go on your own.
if you want to monger, IMHO, this isn't the way to do it.

nice site,BTW; i just wonder where they're located. they don't show a street address, only a telephone # in Florida. but the site is registered in CA. i'd like a street address at least before i send anyone $2k of my hard earned money. just in case any problems arise.

Guys,

Last I heard this hotel was going for $200US+/night which is way too much. Of course deals can always be made help lower the price but why hassle with getting "guests" into your room. You can rent very nice apartments (2br) not far from Caesar Park (my favorite stretch of Ipanema beach btw) for $100-120US/night split by two guys...cheap! And if you still want to go to "regular" clubs Melt and Baronetti are very close......

www.flycheapol.com has airfare for around $980 from San Fran.....
Plus, no need for a tour guide, just hook up with like minded mongers that are repeat visitors and you have an istant "free" tour guide (lol) !!!!

Alas Gentlemen, I will be returning to the sacred hunting grounds of Rio, along with two fellow mongerers, on Saturday September 2nd. We will taste the various delicacies of this sunny land until our departure on Sunday September 10th.

This will be our 2nd trip. As our first was largely confined to Copa and Impanema (except for tourist activities), we plan to venture into Centro and other surrounding cities this time.

If any other fellow mongerers (seasoned or newbies) would like to meet and share in the happy hunting festivities, please PM me. I don't believe you can ever have too many wingmen in Rio. On the contrary, I believe that it actually raises everyone's stock.

LowdownT-mobile as well. However, it will be pretty expensive. I can´t remember if it is $2.99 or $3.99/minute from Brazil. I do know that text messages are $1. I usually switch out my chip when I am in other countries, however while in El Salvador last month I made the mistake of turning my phone on with the T-mobile chip in it. I didn´t make any calls but it notified me that I had voice mails and it also rang on a couple of incomings. I think T-mobile charged me $27 or so because when you are roaming they still have to pay to use other towers to notify your phone that you have a message or an incoming call. So there was a $2.99 charge for each one.

I know with Nextel you can use the walkie-talkie deal for $.10/minute around the world. But when I´m out of the states I have no inclination to communicate with anyone back home. They can wait until I return.

Several months ago there was much chatter here about impending bankruptcy of Varig. Quiet since. I need to fly EZE-GIG on 15 November, return 6 Dec. The best daytime connections by far are on Varig, but about the same fare as TAM-Aerolineas (awful connections).

Varig Website is naturally mum on their future. They will sell the ticket. Cheapseats.com is the only other vender (no Orbitz, etc.) offers this route by Varig. I am suspicious.

Any counsel from you knowledgeable folks out there? I'd like to avoid a 3AM or 5 AM departure from EZE, and a 4-8 hour flight (with stops and connections). But I would also like to avoid spending US$350 for worthless tickets in hand at EZE. (Got caught that way with Pan Am in Bombay years ago and vowed, "never again.")

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Varig were purchased by their freight business. Hence they are back in business. They were released of their debts, hence they have a reasonable chance of surving. It is a decent bet they will be around for a while but only time will tell.

Gol are ok, but you will pay more than USD$75. I have done their flight which connects in POA. At that point you usually need to clear customs before getting back on a domestic flight. There is only a 1 hour time frame to do this, I have made it in this time frame the 3 or 4 times I have flown through this route.

Varig is the better connection.

NEVER EVER fly VARIG - better walk!!!! I have made now a flight with them - the very worst experience. They are the same arrogant incompetent bunch they had been before!!!!!

Any other airline is better.

I bough a tickt with them, first flight simply cancelled because no aircraft was avialable, than a old 737 which they borrowed form a museum - not cleaned, filthy, 7 hours delay without explanation. i wanted to return my ticket and fly with GOL - they refuse to refund the money and told me to wait. I waited all in all 10 hours from SAO to GIG, I could have taken the bus and beat it by 5 hours.

1. Rio for a month, good idea or bad?

Are you kidding me? 2 months is even better!

2. Apartment via Hotel?, I am in favour of Apartment.
An apartment will be a lot cheaper than a hotel over a month, more cash for P4P. Adding to this you will have the benefit of no problems with guests, although if you go for a ultra lux apartment I would confirm with the booking agent that guests are not a problem. Some expensive apartment blocks have certain strata rules to combat mongers bringing in GDP's by the truckload.

3.Copa or Ipan Beach?.
Both good. First time visit I would lean to Copa. It is closer to everything, you will be able to walk to most places.

4 Has anybody heard of the Dream Apartment on Copa beach? Yes it exists. I checked it out. A very pimped out pad. Has a large bed in the living room and a stage for girls to dance on. Location is great as well, about 5 blocks from help. A definite option for a months stay, although it is not on the beach, it is 1 block back with limited views on Rua Francisco Sa.

Check out Natal, in Ponta Negra beach. During December, the place will be flooded with both pros and Non-pros at the beach. Great city with lots of bars and clubs to hangout. The beach will be crawling with ladies from all over Brasil. Its a wonderful vacation spot for Brasilians.

They also have some wonderful sand dunes tours to take during the day. They are great, a must do. Its also a great beach to learn how to surf if you have never surfed before. It does not have killer waves that will blow you over, so its a perfect learning location.

Natal has many europeans being that there are direct flights from Europe to Natal. I think I may have been the only american while I was there in July.

Another spot, or city, is Florianoplois. South of Sao Paulo. Again, great surfing location, and most importantly, amazing looking Brazilian blondes, just amazing natural blondes with amazing bundas. There is an italian and german influence in Flo. Warning, it is expensive, and the girls tend to be high maintenance. They ( non-pros) also tend to be more interested in the surfer scene. There are some pros, but not many in comparison to Rio, Salvador, and other cities in Brasil.

Maybe its for you, maybe not, but I thought I would just mention those two cities. I have also been to Bahia de Salvador, but I have not been able to explore the city as much as I wanted to. It freaken rained so much when I was there, plus I got a stomach virus from eating Moceca de piexe
(traditional seafood dish in Salvador), so I could not get a good feel for the city, but there are alot of women, both pros and non pros. Good Luck! Have fun and be safe! Laters!

Mapquest map of Rio de Jameiro:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=search&countryid=BR&addtohistory=&country=BR&city=Rio+de+Janeiro&submit=Get+Map

Brazilian equivalent of mapquest:

Use the drop down menu:Put in "Rio de Janeiro" for Estado and Cidade.

For Nome da rua* put in the street name, leaving off Rua, etc.

Número is self explainatory.

Hit the "Buscar", (srearch) button and it works just like mapquest:

http://mapas.terra.com.br/Callejero/home.asp

Google maps is a satelite/ street hybred: Type in "Rio de Janeiro" hit the search button, and you have a Rio map. I sugest clicking the hybred button, so you can see the streets:

http://maps.google.com/

And, last but not least, a URL for the Rio Metro. Here you will find maps, prices and all sorts of good info. Remember that the Copacabana metro stops are the "Cardeal Arcoverde" and "Siqueira Compos" stations. L'Uomo and its arch nemisis, can't remember the na,me right now, are 1 and 2 blocks away, respectively. And Nomarada 22 is at Rua Siueira Compos 22, at the edge of the parl between Copa Beach and Rua NS Copacabana. PM me if you want more details. My apartment next week is next to the Cardeal Arcoverde station. The Cardeal Arcoverde station is closest to Princess Isabella, and the Siqueira Compos station is closest to HELP. To get to HELP, I just go out to Ave Atlantica, and jump on any bus going in the direction of Ipenema. OK, so I ride a bus for 10 blocks at R1,90. Beats the heck out of walking, and taking a taxi for R10. Oh, the (English)URL:

Try these 2 sites I have used the BACC one years ago, you might get a better rate but mid November is right around the corner, you don't plan much do you?

I mentioned here several months ago Continental Airlines had on their website fares to Rio at $550 plus tax. I plan ahead bought a ticket for a trip 9 months ahead of time, this will put me in Rio at the height of the season for only $550 plus tax.

Since I plan to be in Rio for 5 months, I guess I should ask this question. I know that the Brazil Embassy web site says something about extending the stay an additional 90 days by paying a fee at the Federal Policia Station.

I read something about going to a bank first to pay the fee. Does anyone know exactly what the deal is here?

I am also considering visiting Paraguay. Do not ask mwe why! I know that both Paraguay and Arg. require visas, which I do not have. But I have been told that the Paraguay Police do not check anything on busses. But, then I would need them to check it to get the re-entry stamp!

I may could get an entry visa through one of the travel agencies in Rio.

Any one got any info on these 2 concepts?

I leave for the airport today!

So far I have found I can fly rountrip into Cali, Colombia from Miami for $450.00 I am thinking I could fly RT between Cali or Medellin to Rio and back for around $500. This was back in August of 2005, but I can't really imagine the procedure has changed a lot. Hope this helps!

One final piece of information: make sure to wear LONG pants when you go to the Policia Federal. They won't let you into the building with shorts. I am serious.

P.S.: Never been to Paraguay or Argentina, so I can't really help there. Sorry! But I'd appreciate updated information on that, too, since the next time I go to Brazil, I definitely wanna check out some neighboring countries (even though for a EU citizen like me, there might be no visas required).

Very true, and that goes for most government buildings. I learnt that lesson when I tried to enter IBAMA wearing shorts. I had to rent the trousers of a security-guard. Cost me 2 Skol.
The trousers were too short and very large in the waist. Did I look handsome? :)

Gents,

Just book my flight last night. Cost $734 from US to Rio (non-stop).

(had I booked it 2 days earlier it was only $699)

I used Nuevo mundo travel located in Miami.

Back in June I used Bobby (from blame it on Rio). I got his info from a friend.
When I read my itinerary, it showed Nuevo mundo at the bottom. So this time I checked both travel agencies. Turns out I saved $75 going direct vs using Bobby. Pays to follow-up. DD

Anyone traveling to Brazil and conecting on to domestic flights, be prepared for delays and re routing. Due to a recent slowdown by air trafic controlers "Operacao Padrao", domestic flights in Brazil have suffered long delays:

Be calm and don't let it ruin your trip, but there have been some disturbances by irate passengers.

2nd trip booked-

I will be in Rio next Wedsesday - staying for 10 days.

This time I will get a hotel near Leme for a few days (so I can get a look at Barbarellas, Franks, Mabs and Balcony). Then I will get an apt for the rest of the stay.

If anyone else is going solo or with a few friends, I could use a wingman.

Just reply here or PM me so we can meet up. I will probably run into those of you who are going to be there anyway. My first trip I met lots of guys to hang out with and screen the ladies.

I will be at the Copacabana Hotel Residência Apart-Hotel next to the Arcoverde Metro.

If any fellow mongers want to hook up, you now know how and where to find me.

TomI'll be there next week - we can grab a few beers (or a lot) and then grab some Brazilian ASS. I think my hotel is not far from where you are staying. I suspect your question regarding Rio vs. SP will yield quite diverse opinions. I visit Rio on occasion but am not as comfortable there as I am in Sao Paulo. Others will have the complete opposite view.

The Hilton in Morumbi is close to the area where I have a condo. I like the Morumbi area as it is reasonably upscale which also translates to being a little safer for Gringoes. The other nice feature about the area is the large number of very good clinicas de massagem which offer 60 minute FS for R$100-120.

Just go to gpguia.net and use the Google translator. Berrini Massagem is a favourite of mine but there are at least 6 others in that area of identical quality. The websites offer pictures and they are actually close...perhaps take one point away for photo-shop editing.

There are many other routes to finding women but I have simply stuck to a formula that works. One thing about Brasil, no matter where you decide to stay you will enjoy the experience.

Hi,
I will be travelling to Sao Paulo in the next three weeks. I looked at the Brazilian embassy web site here in DC and it states that I have to take a yellow fever vaccination if I have been to certain countries in the last 90 days. I have been to one of those countries that requires yellow fever vaccination.
I cannot take the yellow fever vaccination as I am on immuno supressive drugs. I have a letter from my doctor stating the same. Will the customs or immigration in Brazil create problem for me? If they do, what are my options? Do they deport me back to US?

Thanks

Kid03,

If you go to Brazil and the immigration official sees a stamp from a country with the yellow fever restriction and you do not have proof of vacination you could be denied entry. Check with the Brazilian authorities prior to your trip, you may get an exception due to your health situation...

Here is my situation. I can get the visa for brazil in DC. That should not be a problem because I have booked two trips to brazil. One in January and one in March. The one in January falls under the 90 days limit but the other one does not. I can show them my March ticket and get the visa. My problem is with the folks in Sao Paulo. I have stamps all over my passport from my trips to other countries that require a yellow fever vaccination.
The other issue is that the trip that I booked is non refundable. So technically, I have lost all my money whether I take my trip or not.
I asked my doctor and she said she can only give me a letter stating that I cannot take the vaccination. In US things work differently. Only certain agencies can issue the yellow fever vaccinations certificates.
In case, I am denied entry, what are my options? Will they just impose a fine and let me in or just deport me back to US?

Thanks

I didn't research this idea, so don't trash me if it doesn't work, but can't you get a duplicate passport? I thought the US government use to issue them for travel because some countries wouldn't admit you if you had been in other countries. Say mainland China doesn't like Taiwan. Or some Arab countries doesn't like Israel. If this can be done, then get your Brazilian Visa in the new, duplicate passport. Just an idea.

I have experience with this. I travelled to Colombia, one of the countries listed by Brazil that requires a YF vaccine, within 90 days of a planned trip to Brazil. When applying for the visa, I had to show proof of the YF vaccine.

Though I had my WHO card ready to show the Immigration and Customs people in Brazil, they did not request it.

Note that US passport holders go through more scrutiny than other visitors to Brazil. You get photgraphed and fingerprinted. Your passport (I am assuming you are American.) may get a more thorough look through than say Europeans, who do not need a visa to enter Brazil. You may have some difficulty in Brazil.

That said, Kid03, I think your greater problem is the immuno-suppressive drugs you are on and the UTTERLY STUPID idea of travelling to countries KNOWN to have Yellow Fever problems WHILE taking those drugs. You seriously risk DYING from YF, dengue, malaria, dysentery, etc. because you are more susceptible to catching those diseases. Your doctor should have advised you not to travel to tropical countries until your condition no longer required those types of drugs.

I recommend that you scrap this trip and use your medical condition to get a refund on your tickets, or at least credit towards a future trip. You are at much greater risk of getting sick just by being in Brazil. And if you are mongering, then, well, you are at greater risk of catching an STD even if you practice safe sex. YOU DO REALIZE HIV IS A VIRUS THAT ATTACKS AND WEAKNESS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM?!?!?!?!? Your immune system is already weak!!!! There are no words to express the ultra high level of stupidity your recent travel decisions reflect.

Speaking of vaccines,

In the US they're highly touting the new vaccine that is supposed to provide protection against most types of HPV (the group of viruses that causes genital warts).

It's being marketed as a vaccine for girls (there's a big push to get young girls before their 1st sexual activity). Apparently, HPV leads to abnormal cells inside the vagina that eventually lead to many of the cervical cancers that occur.

It's presently in test-phase for men. No one is worrying about ill-effects only testing for efficacy.

Anyone in the industry know about these tests and how long it may be until it's available for men?

I am a big fan of being vaccinated for anything & everything. If I could, I'd get vaccinated for Martian Rabies. It's cheap insurance in my opinion.

It's being marketed as a vaccine for girls (there's a big push to get young girls before their 1st sexual activity). Apparently, HPV leads to abnormal cells inside the vagina that eventually lead to many of the cervical cancers that occur. There is a lot of hype behind this HPV vaccine but if you listen carefully between the words, you can tell that the benefits of it are few.

1) The connection between HPV and cervical cancer is tenuous. HPV is associated with the possible development of certain abnormal cells which are associated with the possiblity of cervical cancer. Nothing is definitive in a causal manner.

2) HPV is not the sole factor associated with cervical cancer. So not getting HPV is not a full defense against getting cervical cancer. The hype suggests that it is.

3) As for men, I have never heard of HPV in men leading to anything related to vancer or anything more serious than the inconvenience of a genital wart. There appears to be no medical reason for men to take such a vaccine.

4) All vaccines are based on the principle of the body reacting to a foreign invader by creating antibodies that will fight the infection. In giving a vaccine, one is being made *mildly* I'll with a weakened version of the virus so that your body can fight the 'infection' through creating antibodies which will be effective in fighting the stronger virus. The problem is that a certain proportion of those receiving the vaccine get the full blown version of the illness and sometimes die. This occurs regularly with flu vaccines that are given to the elderly. Those with weak immune systems actually get the flu from the vaccine and die.

When the risk of dying from the vaccine is greater than the risk of dying from the disease, you don't get the vaccine. I am not sure than study has been done on the case of HPV vaccines, especially for men.

Find me a case where a vaccination killed someone from creating the condition that it was designed to prevent. Ain't gonna happen. The vaccination does not contain "live" virus, they are either "dead" or atunuated, or do not even cointain a "whole" virus at all (maybe just protein triggers), therefore unable to cause infection. I hear people complain all the time, "no flu shot for me, it"ll give me the flu". Nope, ain't gonna happen. These are the same people who buy pills to make their breast grow or their dick longer (or maybe both! lol)

Baring an allergic reaction, vaccinations are safe and have been an EXTREMELY effective means of protectng ones health.

i assume that from your handle you work in the health care industry. i do not. judging from your post, you seem to know just enough medicine to be dangerous but not quite enough to be helpful. i know very little so i research a topic before i post.

you are referring to 'inactive vaccines'. you should know that there is another type of vaccine referred to as 'activated vaccines'. i am pasting some paragraphs i found on a health related website. the bolding of the relevant part of the text is mine.

"flu-vaccine types
there are two types of flu vaccines on the market—an inactivated, or killed, vaccine, and an activated, or live, virus vaccine. both are reformulated every year based on predictions about the flu strains most likely to be circulating during upcoming flu season. the inactivated vaccine is recommended for nearly everyone because it cannot cause influenza; it is administered by injection into the arm.

the live flu vaccine is self-administered using a device that sprays a mist into the nasal passage. the strains of live virus in the vaccine are modified so they do not grow well at body temperature. still, they are active enough to cause the body to develop immunity that will help fight off the infection quickly enough to prevent or minimize symptoms, should an individual contract the flu. nasal mist vaccines are only recommended for healthy people between the ages of 5 to 49 who do not have compromised immune systems. (flumist™ is the nasal mist vaccine approved by the food and drug administration.)

the main advantage of the nasal mist vaccine is that it allows people to avoid vaccination by needles. with the activated vaccine, however, there also is a small risk of developing a mild form of the flu. it also is possible for people vaccinated with the live vaccine to pass the virus to individuals whose immune systems are compromised. people with asthma or other "reactive" airway diseases should avoid vaccination with nasal mist delivery. also, some employer insurance companies do not provide as much coverage (if any) for the nasal mist vaccine. to be sure, ask your insurance carrier.

according to dr. rehm, the inactivated and live vaccines are equally effective in protecting against contraction of the flu. "people who get the vaccine are protected from the most common flu strains going around in a given year," says dr. rehm. children **** 9 who have never had influenza should receive a second dose of vaccine, 6 to 8 weeks after the first, to boost their immunity, says dr. rehm. this is true for both the injected and the nasal mist vaccines."

Last year, I spent the month prior to Carnaval in Rio. Personally, I don't think it is a very good time to go: everything is way more expensive: flights, hotels, food, cabs, and yes, P4P, too. Especially P4P, I should say. There are definitely more girls, but also many more mongers, so there is more competition (and from what I am reading and what I have experienced personally, GDPs seem to be more in a hurry, with so many tourists around that can be overcharged, so you are possibly in for less of a GFE). You can bet that prices WON't come down between now and Carnaval.

I also think it is more dangerous to be there, because things sort of get unglued somewhat during the high season (meaning between New Year's Eve and Carnaval), and lots of tourists sure attract crime in Brazil.

Unless you definitely wanna experience carnaval or just Brazil in party mood (which are very good reasons to go), I don't think it is recommendable. But that's just me.

The four times that I went to Brazil, not once did they check my passport whether I had been in one of the Yellow Fever countries within 90 days from my date of arrival. But then again, I do not hold a US passport (I hold a EU one, actually), so I might have gotten less scrutiny than an American as George90 pointed out.

In two cases, this was a non-issue, the last two times, it was. In 2005, I had a 9-hour stopover in Bogotá with Avianca, and the Avianca representatives at El Dorado airport advised me that even with an entry and exit stemp from Colombia showing the same date, I wouldn't have a problem entering Brazil. Last year, I had spent two weeks in Colombia (Cartagena and Barranquilla) within 90 days prior to arrival in Brazil, with Colombian stamps clearly showing the entry and exit dates. The PF at Antonio Carlos Jobim aiport didn't care.

Since I do not hold a US passport and therefore don't require a visa, I have no idea whether a YF vaccionation certificate would be required for visa processing, but George90's experience clearly indicates that it is. I suggest everyone check with their nearest Brazilian embassy/consulate for further instructions.

Hope this helps,

EA

Thanks! My first question is why would you want to go to Sao Paulo? Unless you are staying at a friend's house or are already familiar with the city. Otherwise the city is just too big and too expensive unless you are going there for business or to visit friends. To give you an example I had to pay a taxi US$15 for a 10 minute ride from the hotel to the airport. It does have an elaborate train system, but you would have to figure it out first!

Next, I agree with EA. Carnaval is not a good time to go. This year it will be from Feb 18-20. The prices will start going up two weeks before and won't start going back down until two weeks after. Girls tell me that they easily get R$500.

And a place to stay costs twice as much as normal and they usually say that you have to stay at least 7 days.

I have never been for Carnaval or New Years because like EA said there are more people and more tourists and therefore more banditos out to take you for what you have. I have a couple of offers to go this year for Carnaval but I will be staying with locals if I decide to go.

well to name a few of the place I like.. and Big Ben and rua Agusta for those who want less expensive. and then the Clincas..

You can find a nice hotel that is GFE almost anywhere.. Mercury are good and mid priced..

SP and Rio are very different. SP is boiates and Love Story Disco, and Rio is street, termas and ave atlantica restaraunts (Balcony. Mabs, Meia Patca, Terraco Atantica and Help Disco)

Giris in SP are more pro (do what you contract to do) and Rio they want to go GFE and hang in for a few days at least.

June '06. Brazilian immigration had the special line for Americans open and the few Americans on the flight went into it.

The only way for Brazil to stop doing this to Americans is for the US to stop doing it to Brazilians. Brazil follows a reciprocation policy. I hadn't yet heard of the US having stopped photographing and fingerprinting visitors to the US. I have only heard of reducing the number of countries subject to this treatment. I think more European countries are getting a pass now. I have not heard of Brazil being one of the countries.

I have seen Americans not getting this treatment when the camera or scanner were not working properly.

I went to Rio right after they started scanning and fingerprinting. I return just about every 3 months. They have not scan nor fingerprinted me again. (maybe I'm in their system.) The equipment is still there though. I recall at the time this first started, the huge lines it created, as they did not have enough officers. I'll be returning to Rio in 12 days :D
and will report back.

I have come to brazil 12 times a year for 4 years. I have entered in Sao Paulo and Rio (mostly sao paulo).

Fingerprinting and photo of americans started when we started to fingerprint and photo them (and others) just after 9/11. At first it was manual poloroid and ink prints, then they installed camera and electronic scans. You had to first go through the normal immigration line then get in a line for americans (in Sao Paulo).

Soon after that there was the SARS scare, which added a 3rd checkpoint, it was very time consuming.

It was about 2 years ago they stopped doing this and there is just one immigration line, my last entry to Brazil was November 21 in Sao Paulo and no special line for americans.

As far as them looking at the stamps in your passport. Mine will be 3 years old in March and has 60 readable brazil stamps (too much free time on the flight). It should have 61 or some other odd number as am in Brasil now. The vast majority of the stamps are not readable. Rio has a tendency too not do an exit stamp, I have to ask them to do it. That is probably where one is missing.

Just some info for yáll.

Sorry. I thought Rio was a city in Brazil, not a whole country unto itself. I also didn't realize the question pertained ONLY to Brazil immigration in Rio. On my last trip I entered through Salvador. My comments relate only to that city for the time frame I mentioned. If you are experiencing different things in Rio, then good for you. If Brazil policy has changed recently, then good for everybody.

I've been looking for around April and wowzers, these tickets are friggin $1,200!!!! I guess the market is going up in all things down there. Does anybody have a way to beat these prices? I know some of you use travel agents, any luck getting a ticket in the $700s at least?

I usually use miles, but this time I'm forced to go cash. It's ugly out here.

Check out nuevomundousa - its a travel agency in Miami. I got a deal in Nov for $734. I could have got it even lower (like around $650) but I waited to long to book. Let me know if this helps.

FYI - the dates of travel do matter.

When you look for your tickets - check various dates.
Check out flights a few days before and a few days after your initial dates. The prices do change depending on the day of the week you leave and the date you return.

Good luck.

Try www.brol.com they will work to get you the best fares to Brazil. Just booked a short notice trip for 2 months, for a total of 945.00 with taxes included. Could have gotten it for 795.00 from Miami. In April it will be low season and they can get you there for much less depending on where your departure point is. Trips under 15 days cost much less than longer trips Buy way ahead of time and leave and return in the middle of the week and save even more.

That is what I just paid for GIG-SNA. Rates will go down after high seaso (March 1).

Also you might look at flyertalk forum: http://flyertalk.com/forum/

Lower rates after Mar 1? I'm not too sure about that. I arrive in Rio next friday, on American. My fare, Chicago-Miami-Rio, is $1311. I just looked at fares for a trip in late March, same route, $1435. Also checked Continental $1100+, and United $1500 for late March.
If I fly American with two stops, fare drops to $1112 for late March.
Yes, I'm an American FF member, so every 5th trip is on them. And I do everything I can to earn miles.
I'm no longer sure if I should continue with the FF program or switch to buying from a consolidator.
Four years ago, when I first started traveling to Rio, my lowest fare was $640. Seems the fares just keep going up. At this rate, I may no longer afford to travel. :(

Here's what I do:

1) Go to www.travelocity.com or www.expedia.com (or other online sites, like Orbis, etc.) to check the general range of airfares for FLEXIBLE travel dates. Then, play around for a while with your specific dates to get the cheapest ones and read the restrictions on these fares. Keep in mind that departure during the week, especially on Thursdays, is way cheaper than on Friday or weekend. Ditto for returns, especially on Tuesdays. One tip that has greatly helped me is that airlines generally publish a few supersaver fares starting on Wednesday 00:00, so to get those fares, book them immediately.

2) Once you have a general idea of fares, contact your travel agency to help you figure out whether there are even cheaper options. I use my travel agency here in Mexico (whose contact information is of limited use to mongers out there, of course), but in the past, like when I lived in California, I have used http://www.airbound.com in San Francisco, and they have been VERY helpful, saving me thousands of dollars on some multi-segment, complicated, overbooked travel routes in the past. Don't know if she still works there, but Bing Raymundo at Airbound has been awesome for me. I know her personally.

By doing the above, last year, in January, I started looking for a ticket to Rio from Mexico City for three months, leaving on February 1 and returning May 1, 2006, meaning throughout carnaval. The cheapest tickets I initially found were in the range of USD 1,200 to 1,500. Ultimately, I found a promotion by Avianca via Bogota for USD 750.00, including taxes and everything. Called my travel agency, and they nailed it.

In my personal experience, contacting the airlines directly is usually a waste of time; I have NEVER ever received the best fare from any of them. IMHO, a kick-ass travel agency is the way to go and well worth the money. For example, in 2005, my travel agency here in Mexico saved me about USD 300.00 by making a last-minute routing change on my confirmed ticket to Rio (going through Bogotá on Avianca instead of Santa Cruz on Lloyd Bolivian), cutting the cost from USD 1000 to USD 700.00. I sure didn't mind paying them a USD 25.00 service charge for that.

Also, IMHO, looking for deals way ahead of time is usually NO guaranty that you will get a good deal. Airlines figure that if you look THAT ahead of time, well, there must be a reason you have to be there on that date, so they will try to fleece you. As always, the more flexibility you have, the better. And of course, if you are prepared to pay top dollar, you can go whenever you want. It's all a game, guys.

Guys,

Consolidators can be a great savings at times. My two favorites are

www.flycheapol.com where they have mainly Continental tickets that will earn you OnePass miles (FF) and once you gain Elite status it can add up to buy 2 flights get 1 free (with a little extra mileage, 2 flights gets me about 48,000 miles). Although their prices have been great in the past they are going up also....

Next, I mentioned in the other thread, is www.flycheapabroad.com It´s my first trip with these guys and will update details when I return to USA...but it was CHEAP, $725 including taxes/fees.

Yes, I think it is. I have only been to Salvador and the countryside of Rio de Janeiro state, but I think that Rio is the best option for a first-timer for a couple of weeks.

1) Speaking English will not be a problem as long as you stay on the well-trodden tourist path in Rio, while no Portuguese can be a problem in other parts of the country.

2) There are tons of things to do in Rio in terms of in-depth sightseeing, and you will have plenty of time to do some excursions to places like Petrópolis, Niterói, Armacao de Búzios, Angra dos Reis, etc. Depending on exactly what you want to do, you might even consider taking trips of a couple of days to other attractions in Brazil (Iguacu comes to mind, for example).

3) It will be off-season (winter in Brazil, actually), without the crazy Carnaval and Réveillon crowds, and everything will be cheaper, tours, hotels, food, whatever not. Personally, I have always liked the climate in August much more than the stifling heat and humidity of the Carioca summer, although it sure can get chilly and rainy in winter sometimes.

4) There will be no shortage of girls, don't worry about that, and considering the dearth of other tourists, they should be more accommodating than ever. Needless to say, P4P prices will come down significantly from insane Carnaval levels.

I say, go for it. Happy mongering!

The cheapest tickets EVER from NY to Rio is http://forestdirect.com I got a flight for $639 INCLUDING tax. The only down side is the flight time, its during the day time. My flight leaves at 8:30AM, arrives in Sao Paolo at around 7PM and then departs to rio at 8PM, arrving around 9:30PM. I'm going to take some lunesta to try to sleep, no way i'm staying up on a plane for 12 hours. On the way back is the same mess. But, I'll sacrifice some pain to save $400.

"I'm no longer sure if I should continue with the FF program or switch to buying from a consolidator."

Chingon-I don't see why you think you need to choose between the 2. I have purchased las-gig flights from various consolidators-911fly.com, flycheapabroad.com, bt-store.com & have always received my ff miles on my united & continental ff programs. You will recieve 100% credit plus any ather bonuses you may be entitled to. You just need to contact the airline after you make the booking & inform them of your ff # & you will get credited. The only difference is that with the continental program you only receive 50% of the miles credited toward your elite status. So if its late in the year & you need the full amount to reach the next elite level & that's important to you-you might want to buy off their website to get the 100% elite credit.

George90.. I also travel to Brazil 5-7 times a year and enter in Sao Paulo and Rio.. Last time, was last week. They are NOT taking photos and fingerprinting any longer... But I guess you know better than the rest of us.........

In January of this year, there was an exchange between myself, Nodd N above, Chingon, Off Road, and Exec Talent, concerning the treatment of American by Brazilian immigration. I had claimed that Americans were being photographed and finger printed by Brazilan authorities in compliance with the policy enacted after Brazilian nationals were subjected to the same treatment by US immigation. That exchanged earned me a coveted place on Mr. Talent's wonderful Ignore List.

I am currently in Brazil. I entered Brazil yesterday morning and passed through immigration in Fortaleza. The following is my experience.

1) I hand my passport and forms to the clerk.

2) A 'immigration helper' approaches me and informs me that after the clerk stamps my passport I must go and have my picture taken. I ask why. Answer: You are an American.

3) I realize I had mistakenly given the clerk my US passport which does not have a visa in it. As he was about to ask where my visa was I give him my passport with the visa (I have dual citizenship).

4) The helper sees my non-US passport and says I do not have to have my photo taken.

5) I tell her about hearing that this policy was stopped and ask about it. She replied that at no time did the immigration office in Fortaleza ever stop photographing US citizens entering Brazil. The policy was never repealed or interrupted.

6) I observed the American travellers, about 8 in all, being photographed by Brazilian immigration.

I am not saying you guys are wrong. I was not in Rio or Sao Paulo at the times you were there. But I was in Fortaleza yesterday and observed the policy towards US citizens, which you claim has been stopped, being executed in full force.

George,

Yours is an excellent post and I sincerely appreciate the information. I have not been to Fortaleza so look forward to reading about your experiences there.

FYI, on my frequent trips to Brazil entering through either Rio or Sao Paulo I have never been photographed or finger printed. Many times Brazilian bureaucracy gives way to expediency and reality. There are just too many people entering through Rio and Sao Paulo to make the policy practical.

Since I was mentioned, I'll chime in:
I was in Brazil in late January. I was not photographed nor fingerprinted upon arrival in Rio. The equipment was still there though.
It's all very simple:
Too many Americans are entering through Rio or SP, they have no time and too few officers to enforce policy. It's impractical.
Too few Americans enter through Fortaleza, they have enough officers and time to enforce the policy.
I remember the news reports when this policy went into effect. Up to 8hrs wait time to process the Americans! (They didn't have the equipment nor officers.) We're talking many plane loads, not just 8 people. And no, this policy has not been rescinded. Surprisingly, the Brazilian Federal Government allowed a local judge to set national policy.

Hi George, I don't want to get invloved with the lover's quarrel that's going on here, but I was just wondering, did you fly to Fortaleza directly from the States, and if so, how? Was it a charter flight or are there direct commercial flights now? I know a few years back TAM had a Miami-Fortaleza flight, but they got rid of that route, I guess because of lack of demand. Or did you fly from Europe? I'm asuming that since they fingerprinted you in FOR, that's where you entered the country.

It would be nice to access the Northeast from the States without having to change planes in Rio or SP, and then backtrack. Copa Airlines now flies to Manaus from the U.S. (with a stop in PTY) but nowhere to the Northeast.

Thanks for any info.

The flight, on TAM Airlines, originate in Miami and ended in Fortaleza, but it was not a direct flight. There were stops in Manuas and Belem. Lots of Americans debarked in Manaus.

I am not in Fortaleza. I connected there for a flight to Recife. This is not a mongering trip for me. I am visiting some friends I made on previous trips here. I will not be making a report.

Tam also has direct flights from Miami to Salvador (and Salvdor-Miami) on Sundays only. It continues on to Sao Paulo (and arrives from Sao Paulo).

This route was not a first choice for me. The flights via SP were full in coach and the business class tickets were in the range of $3,000 - $4,000. This route cost $1,000 for coach.

There is an anti-mongering war going on in Fortaleza.

It all started two years ago when a lady mayor was elected and it was against child prostitution and pornografy in the first place.

Now they don't want Fortaleza to become a new Rio. There are a lot of articles on the two main newspapers almost every other day.

Trere are serious talks between the agencies involved of how they can change the law and give a month only permit instead of three when entering Brasil in Fortaleza.

They miscalculate in purpose your time in Brasil when you ask for a visa extension. It happened to me. Instead of another three months they only gave me 22 days more. I went to Policia Federal in Rio and they confirmed that the Fortaleza branch was wrong.

They stopped traffic rights to a certain charter company which was bringing dutch mongers to Fortaleza and the list goes on.

They don't want us there.

Thanks

There were a lot of anti-child exploitation posters all around the airport in Fortaleza. I did monger there around 5 years ago and saw many children on the streets late at night. I saw a social services team talking with streets kids at night. I spoke with one team and they said there a large number of homeless children who turn to prostitution to earn money to buy food. Other Brazilians I spoke with in other cities have confirmed this. Fortaleza has a national reputation for having a great deal of child prostitution.

Government efforts to crack down on child prostitution are not a bad thing.

Didn't say the opposite. I totally agree with you. But they are going well beyond that. They are trying to stop any sex tourism using methods against the law.

I will be in Copa beginning Monday afternoon (March 26) for about 1 week. Looking to share cab fare to Solarium, venture out to Barra and try to visit Villa Mimosa for the first time in 3 years since I have been coming to Brazil. PM me if anyone is interested. I hope to hang out at "The Office" and meet up with some ISG members.

Has anyone experience of flying from Rio to Quito? The best deals I've seen so far are Copa airlines (via Panama) - I can't find anyone who flies direct.

Although some deals need to be booked before arriving in South America (such as the Lan travel pass) I'm weighing up the options of that as opposed to booking the bucket shop airlines once I get there.

Ideally I'd like to go to Quito first and see how much time I want to spend, or fly Rio to Quito and get a flexible return date, but it involves the hassle of getting a Yellow Fever innoculation apparently (unnecessary for health reasons just staying in Quito, but required, I understand, if entering Brasil after being anywhere in Ecuador).

Vila Mimosa is not for everybody, but it is a great exerpience. It is kind of like an old Wild West town on a Saturday night and the Sheriff is out of town. I have been there many times over the past 4 years and have found it to be very safe. Yes there are plenty of dogs 3s and 4s, but I always manage to find an 8 or 9 to take home for the night. It is a several hour process as girls come and go, but surely out of over 200 you can find ONE keeper.

For any interested in taking a cab there the first three weeks of April, I can introduce you to some of the owners and some girls that fit your "type".It is one huge party, every bar (about 50) playing their own music, road food and a general good time. Cost of splitting a taxi is $5 from Copa.

I have learned alot from this board and it is one way I can pay back to others.

One good thing about the violence and weak dollar--airfares are going down. At the moment you can get to Rio from California for $700-800 on Delta, and I think Continental is close to this range too.
I was looking at rates in August. A few weeks ago rates for the same period were at $1400.

Mr. Thomas,

I am not in Rio, but I would highly suggest that you go to a therma even if you do not find a buddy.

Monte Carlo is right at the corner of Avenida Atlantic. It is really easy to find.

I know it has a website that you can find easily by searching.

It would just be a shame for you not to go.

Perhaps I don't understand your question. It's April now, October is 5 months away. You can use it for another 5 months as long as you have not visited
Brazil over 90 days this year. I would not recommend being in Brazil in October when your Visa expires.
My 5 year visa expired this month. I plan on renewing it this Friday. I'm hoping they issue another 5 year visa.

You have to go visit a Terma (or 3 of them). Its something you don't want to miss, even if you go alone. Go have some beer or water or whatever, find a nice girl and have some fun. Make the most of your time there.

On my 1st trip to Rio, I only went to a terma on my last 2 nights. I went alone and had a blast. I wished I had gone sooner in the trip to try more places.

Check a few out, have fun, then post your experiences for us to read.

I'd second that. Especially if you are still getting to grips with Rio, which can be quite daunting. Walking in the door of the terma is *the* only difficult bit, not knowing what to expect. But, compared to most things you can do in Rio, it's kinda like a safe, pampered, sex-on-tap environment. You only have to use minimal common sense instead of looking over your shoulder all the time.

Have fun! And yes, tell us how much you enjoyed it, do!

I am planning a trip in October that will last about 2 weeks. I plan on flying into GIG and heading south. Octoberfest in Blumenau is high on my list, as is some time down in Floripa. I saw buses that run to both places, but the trip is long so I will look into some cheap domestic airfare.

Anyone have any experience with Octoberfest? I cannot seem to find apartment rental listings there like for other cities. Might have to suck it up and shell out for a hotel.

The trip will be half travel/experiencing the culture and half mongering (a culture unto itself).

If anyone plans on heading to Blumenau between October 6-12 (maybe a little later)let me know.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated. I have been reading the boards for some time now, but Blumenau is rarely mentioned.

Thank you Gents! I have learned quite a bit from reading the RoDs that many of you have written. Before I found this Forum I was pretty blank.

I still have a number of questions though, and I was wondering (as the Rookie I am) which thread would be the best to ask them in? I guess I can start by asking here, who'll be in Rio from May 13th and onwards. I'll stay up to two weeks, depending on how nice it is going to be.

Are you guys OK with helping out yet another rookie ;-) I keep learning by reading the older posts, but up-to-date bits of advice will be value - especially reg. safety, language and making it with non-pros.

Guys it has truly been inspiring to be a member of ISG. I joined just for Brazil 2 years ago. Now it has come time to make the voyage to what I consider the mother land! My friend and I will both be traveling to RIO the last week of May and we are interested in leveraging the knowledge both found on here as well as anyone who has experience while we are down there. I too believe there is safety in numbers and fun can be had by all. If there are any people down there at the time we are there, I do wish to meet up and exchange notes is possible. We arranged for an apartment, which will have internet access...I hope to contact those who are down there for just a great time! PM me or I can PM you...thanks, I do hope to add a report on here from my trip since I think that it is only fair!

I know, it's about 9 months away, and from what I have been reading few experienced mongers would consider visiting Rio during Carnival. But unless I can swing a trip this fall (not totally out of the question but not totally likely either) I will be making my virgin trip to Brasil during Carnival next year. I have my airfare already ($790 on Delta) which, from what I’ve read, seemed pretty reasonable. I imagine rooms book way in advance around Carnival. Right now I have a reservation for the admittedly prime time rip-off rate of $200 per night at Savoy Othon. I am going to explore other options for lodging since I understand Savoy is not really keen on friends coming over to play. I received a quote of $130 per night at Orla Copa which, if available, I think I will take. It sounds like Orla is more guest friendly, though apparently a little away from ground zero as far as a single gentleman traveler's activities are concerned.

My number 1 question today remains the best way to get a visa. I have done a search here and found very little info. I know my designated consular office is in New York City. They do not accept mail applications and I am not inclined to drive 3 hours to apply in person. Does anybody have any recommendations for Visa Service agencies, or other suggestions for the easiest way to proceed? I realize I cannot even get my visa until December, unless I do actually make an earlier trip, but I just want to learn from the pros here. I apologize if this has been hashed out previously and I missed it in my search.

Where did you hear that the Orla is guest friendly?

The orla's location is great.

But they charge $70. US. per night for guests.

And that's what I was charged.

But the restaurant and the staff are good.

If you Google it , you will find a number of agencies that will charge you $45-55 PLUS any shipping charges. I have used this agency in the past:
