I am set to arrive on the 24th of March but will probably be crashing since I will be working hard for a few days prior while in Panama.

After that is all about partying from the 25th to the 3rd.

LP it would be great if you can make it! I already have some ideas re places and what not.

I found http://abstravel.com had tickets on Copa from LAX for $575.00 they go direct to Panama then to Medellin. I picked tht for several reasons:

1. I was told its a pain to go through customs in Bogata & to advoid if possible.

2. I did not want any long layovers the one in Panama is an hour & a half.

3. The flight leaves at 12:15am from LAX & with enough Ambein I can sleep the flight away. lol

4. I will get into Medellin at 12:30pm and gives me plenty of mongering time left for that day.

5. They were the only ones who offered a 4:30pm flight out ll the others it was 8:15am which means I would have to get up at 4:00am to be able to have enough time to catch it. It also gives me a half a day of mongering before I have to leave.
There are others but those are the main reasons.

I live in Cartagena and will be in Medellin from 4/7 to 4/17 to avoid the crush in CTG. Thursday through Easter Sunday are holidays. Nothing related to tourism and partying are closed in CTG the entire time.

My novia in MDE tells me that there are many people visiting the MDE area during the holidays. I don't expect any clubs or bars to be closed.

Cali, in my opinion, is a poor sister. It is more dangerous mostly because of higher unemployment. Many people may well leave there for the holiday.

in Medellin they frisk everybody arriving on international flights and they seem to check more bags than in Cali or Bogota (I have arrived at all 3). In Bogota, I have always breezed right through.

IMHO Tom is correct about Cali being the "poor sister". Medellin & Cartagena are much better for visiting mongers.

Re semana santa, I have always heard many chicas are with their families during semana santa and that it is a lousy time to go. I KNOW rooms and flights are at a premium, so I have always avoided it. I am still debating whether to go right before, or right after. I did go to the PI once during Holy Week (as they call it) and it was HORRIBLE!

Not true, Surfer.

I arrived on Thursday, 3/16 in MDE on the direct flight from JFK. There was no frisking, of anyone. Of nobody. Nowhere in the terminal. They didn't even check my luggage.

So where do you get this stuff about 'they frisk everybody arriving on international flights'?

We could debate this over and over, but to protect the membership and lurkers out there, I'm gonna fast forward and get to the heart of the problem:

Lighten up a little, Don. Surfer can be opinionated, but he is helpful. Surfer may very well have seen everyone frisked on his flight.

I have arrived in MDE directly from the US twice(American Airlines), most recently in Jan. of this year. I didn't see anyone being frisked. No bags were searched that I noticed.

I normally come from the US directly to Cartagena(Avianca). In Cartagena I have always been patted down. At least one bag has always been opened and hand searched. Like MDE, you also have to put all of your bags through an X-ray machine.

For what it's worth, I've flown JFK-MDE on Avianca 7 times this year (already hit Platinum) and these are my observations:

On arrival into MDE, I get frisked EVERYTIME. I don't hang around and see what happens to everyone else, but it appears everyone else gets frisked as well. What they are looking for is money.

They rarely go through my luggage (small bag anyway) although on the last trip I hit the button and got the green light but was referred for a luggage search. 2 minutes and I was out the door and in the car.

Leaving MDE (internationally) is horrible. Immigration gets backed up and I get frisked EVERYTIME and pretty much everyone else does as well (though the females don't always get frisked). Once past the metal detectors they open up EVERY bag and go through everything. And they aren't quick about it either.

As my trips are usually very short, I now return through Bogota. Why? Because the Avianca flight to JFK from MDE leaves at 6pm, but you really need to be there by 3pm to get through the lines (my experience on three trips this year). That means you need to leave the City by 2-2:15pm.

By going through Bogota, I take the last Avianca flight MDE-BOG which now leaves at 10pm (was 9:20pm up until a few weeks ago) and because it is a domestic flight and there is little traffic on the road at that hour, I leave my apartment at 8:30pm and I'm checked in, past security and in the lounge by 9:30pm - and that includes getting the departure tax waiver (which you do in an office near the chapel at that hour) and then paying it at the Avianca counter and then getting the boarding pass.

Once in BOG, I take the connecting bus to Int'l Departures and because I have my boarding pass I go right to immigration and it's totally empty at that hour (10:45pm give-or-take). Then I head to security and walk right thru - very quick and easy. Just past security there are a few soldiers and they frisk EVERYONE. But hardly anyone gets their bag checked - which is a much different story than in Medellin).

I then hit the lounge and wait for final boarding (about 11:35pm) then it's off to gate 4 or 5 and you go through Avianca private security, usually very fast and only once did they open my carryon.

The flight leaves pretty much on-time at 11:55pm and gets into JFK at 5:30am (with the clock change in the US next week, it'll get in at 6:30am). At JFK I just walk right thru - have never been checked once at JFK (was given a secondary once at Newark last year).

As a side-note - because they are widening the road going from Medellin to Rio Negro on the Las Palmas route, traffic slows to a standstill at times. On one trip we were at a dead-stop for 45 minutes and I made the driver turn-around and take the BOG highway - luckily it was on the way into Medellin - not to the airport. Until they finish the road (which will take quite a while) I strongly advise that you instruct the driver to take the highway. It is a little longer mileage wise, and the toll is 2,000P more (some drivers make a big deal over this), but the trip is 40 minutes via the highway - you gotta count at LEAST an hour going via Las Palmas.

The details were fresh in my mind as I just returned this morning.

It costs the same and gives you an extra 6 hours on the ground + no waiting in lines. No big deal if you're in MDE for 2 weeks, but huge if you're there for the weekend.

There was so much security leaving MDE when I left on 3/20, that I remember counting 10 different steps from arrival at the airport to actually walking down the jetway.

The outrageous airport tax of US31 actually involved two steps. You get a slip of paper from a minion first, and later you hand that over with the cash to another minion at another counter.

Even after checking in and going through immigration, there are several more identical security checks, some within no more that 50 feet of each other. Stop, put carryon through the scanner; remove shoes and step through that doorway thing and get 'wanded'.

Travel 50' and repeat.

I kept my passport in hand as I was asked for it several times within the space of a hundred yards, as if anything had changed.

It was so over-the-top that I started counting the steps and came up with 10. Manila airport is the only other that I know that has as much security.

Why post about this? To let people know to allow extra time.

And man cannot live on flames alone!

Either routing costs about the same. The cheapest I've paid is $545 r/t including all fees and taxes - but they don't sell many seats at that price - you have to book at least a few weekes in advance to find one. I usually pay about $650 total.

What airline?

I'm sorry - all my flights this year have been on Avianca. The flight from JFK leaves at 7am.

COPA is another good option, and costs about the same. With COPA, you connect through Panama. COPA leaves JFK at 5am and there is a Panama-Medellin connection with AeroRepublica (a new COPA partner) around 11am. This is a new connection and they don't show it on the COPA website - but it's there, 7 days a week.

It has actually evolved to the point of absurdity over the last few years. When I leave CTG for MIA now, all my luggage(checked and carry-on) is hand-searched. Just before you enter the secured departure gate, you walk through a metal detector and get wanded and patted. Your carry-on is X-rayed. Then, just before you board, you walk through a different metal detector and get wanded and patted. Your carry-on is X-rayed in a different machine. I was told that one set of security checks was for Colombia. The other one was for Avianca. After all this, I was stopped once just after leaving the terminal for the plane for an additional pat-down.

Inefficiency and redundancy are very Colombian.

To answer your question: yes, it's plenty of time to head into town. I did that last year. I rented a car from Avis and drove into the city, about 30 minutes away. Plenty of time for lunch, a little sightseeing and some action.

Gotta tell you though, getting action in Panama right before going to Medellin is like eating at Burger King right before going to Peter Luger's. Just my opinion.

What's confusing to me is I know AeroRepublica now has a strategic alliance with COPA and they have a flight leaving from Panama around 11am - so you can avoid the long layover. But they don't list that flight on their website. And you would think it would be listed on COPA's but it never was - that was one of the reasons I went with Avianca. COPA and Continental never worked seamlessly, even though they are both OnePass (and COPA is partially-owned by Continental). That trend seems to be continuing with AeroRepublica.

SlumLord thanks for the info... COPA seems cheaper and I don't mind the stop just for the experience... I can go for a snack before the banquet...or I will try for the earlier connection.... I am hoping Medellin is worth the trip... would settle for a couple of really hot and wild girls for the four days... keep them for the entire trip and just have fun.... the daily hunt can be fun but also time consuming...

I am 3 for 3 at MDE, NEVER been frisked arriving in Cali 7 times nor the two (maybe 3) times I have arrived in Bogota.

According to his own posts, Don has been to Medellin once and based on his CLAIM that he was not frisked, he now accuses me of being more interested in being "an internet personality" than in providing info. The fact that most everybody else who posted DID get frisked at MDE 9some 7 out of 7 times) suggests that Don is just, well, "special".

My point was merely to refute the guy who said he heard BOG presented the most hassles for international arrivals yet, like my comment on scooby's compilation, it provided a prextext for Don to resume his jihaad against me (which started when I called him for posting a racially offensive comment that violated ISG's code of conduct).

Back to substance now (hey Don: give it a rest and take out your aggression on your ex wife and her lawyer, not me!).

To avoid the hassles at MDE (Rionegro), if flying elsewhere within Colombia avoid Avianca and Aerorepublica and get a flight out of Olaf Heraya airport (10 minutes at most from Poblado) on a smaller local carrier like Aires (www.aires.co). For international flights you have no choice but to use MDE.

You can get a taxi (about $20US each) from the airport to downtown for a quickie at Oassis.

You can also take a tour (though COPA) to the canal. The canal is very interesting to see.

You will have to pass through immigration and pay something, but that is better than sitting in the airport.

Check the Panama board and ask more questions there. I was suppose to have a 9 hour layover in Panama on my way from Mexico to Cali, but instead I went a day earlier and stayed in Panama City for a night. I got a 33 hour "layover" instead and only had to pay a small amount more, but I got to enjoy a new location. I liked Panama City. Plenty of gambling and chicas. SW's are about $25US, which makes them about the same price as Colombian SW.

On my first few trips, I thought it was great to stop over in Panama and check out the sights. But after a while, the novelty wore off and I just wanted to get to my final destinatuion as quickly as possible.

To me shooting a load in Panama right before going to Colombia is like whacking off the night before a trip - something that feels right at the time but contributes to diminishing returns at the end.

That said, I enjoyed my layover in PTY when I went into town (They charge $5 at immigration to leave and return the same day). They also have buses that go to shopping malls expressly for layover guests - to me a very smart move.

The Canal is spectacular - something to be seen for sure.

One of the great things about renting a car in PTY is the car rental places are all right by the exit. You just check-in and they bring the car to the curb - no shuttle bus. And when you return, you just pull up to the curb and go to the counter. It's the most efficient car airport rental system I've ever seen. And cars from Avis start at $15 a day!!!

And speaking of BK, Panama City has every fastfood franchise known to man -even some that went bankrupt in the States are still alive and well in PTY.

Enjoy your trip!!!

What is the best way to spend 14 days? Travel to 1 Central American country, or make the tour to Columbia, Brazil, Central America? Or simply to 1 country: Thailand, Phillipines or Indonesia?

In reviewing all the great posts, I LOVE BEST the tall, olive skin women of Brazil & Columbia. But like most of you, I like just about everything. My past experienced were 4 trips to Costa Rica, so I am not a complete novice, but defintely not the experienced you all have.

Hell even the Air Fare from LAX to BKK, 9 out of 10 times it is cheaper then flying to South America! But IMHO Thai girls don't even touch Latinas!

And did someone say somthing? Looks as if someone is waking up his sleeper cells!

I'll be traveling alone and a little apprehensive about my first trip and no wingman. I have conversations going with a couple Amigos.com ladies and will be checking out the P4P scene in both cities.

Any advice or anyone want to hook up?

Best bet would be the quick in and out places - the casas that have hourly rates - just get a 2 hour window of freedom and off you go.

It seems the COPA flights to Medellin have about a 9 hour layover in Panama... is that enough time to get somewhere for a quick one?You should have time to get Laid at least three times.

Yes, you will need to collect your luggage in Bogota and clear customs after passing through immigration. Same deal as when entering the US: you need to clear customs at the first port of entry.

There is a free shuttle bus that runs from the international terminal to the domestic terminal. To be honest, I'm not sure if you check-in your luggage at a kiosk in the international terminal or if you bring it with you on board the shuttle bus. Maybe someone else can answer that question definitively.

Last night I flew Avianca JFK-BOG and connected to Medellin. I checked one bag in New York and was shocked when the agent told me I DIDN'T have to clear customs in BOG, that my bag would be forwarded to Medellin.

So when I got off the plane in BOG, I cleared immigration first and then had my carry-on bags screened (went pretty quickly) and then walked about 100 yards to get to the shuttle bus that takes you to the regional terminal.

As I was carrying a ridiculous amout of liquor that I picked up at duty-free at JFK (seven bottles) I used a porter to bring my carry-on stuff from immigration to the bus. Worked out great as he even found a large bag to consolidate all my bottles, although it made it harder to carry. A pilot who was on the shuttle bus said he could have them hand-check my bottles if I invited him to the party. I told him every night's a party at my place and I'll be damned if he didn't have one of the cargo guys load the bottles carefully and then personally made sure I got them in Medellin, since I had no claim number.

After collecting my checked-in bag in Medellin, I did technically clear customs as my bag had a green tag so I was directed to the one customs guy on duty. He asked me if I had more than USD10,000, didn't pat me down (first time I didn't get patted down in MDE) and then told me to exit. Entering MDE is a lot more lax when transiting thru BOG.

My confusion probably arose from the fact that I previously flew Continental from EWR-BOG and had to retrieve my checked luggage and clear customs before connecting with Avianca to MDE. So when you fly Avianca, they'll check your bag all the way thru and you clear customs at your final destination.

Sorry about the confusion

No, they don't ask. I think that you need the proof if you want to go to Tayrona Park or Cuidad Perdida. If you haven't gotten the yellow fever vaccine, it's probably a good one to get.

I remember last year before entering Colombia, that since I had been in Brasil within 30 days of trip to Colombia, it was mandatory to take the freaken shot. So I did, in Miami. I was dying to take it out ( proof of vaccination) and show anyone and everyone after taking the shot and paying a rip off fee of 75 dollars at the hospital.

Go figure, no one ever asked for it, or even brought it up as a question or comment. Not the airline, nor at the airport in Colombia. Its all b.s. Just to be on the safe side, take the vaccine, its not worth the risk of not being able to get in the country because some jack off all of a sudden deciding to enforce the regulations, so called regulations. Good luck and have fun. Laters!

I recently posted some thoughts regarding my South American travel inteniary on the Rio.

Zidaho
11-06-06, 07:36
It is vastly easier to fly to Rio first (you can get a 1 way from Miami for $350.) monger for a few weeks then fly on to Bogata - - -verses - - - flying to Bogata then RIo . . . and finaly back to MIami. I am finding the number of flights from Colombia to RIo is much smaller and costly, than the other way around. I wish that would have made sense sooner. Ha, ha.

However I am not sure it makes sense to combine Colombia Rio inteniary considering it really does practically double the fare. In other words the cost of transportation for mongering RIO AND Colombia doubles the transportaion cost back to Miami.

Nevertheless if one must combine a Colombia/Brazil mongering trip due to scheduling restrictions . . . then flying out of Atlanta (via NW USA) and booking the entire travel iteniary in the USA through one agent is generally cheaper then out of Miami and piece mealing the inteniary through Sojth America (via Rio-Colombia), cheaper by about by about $600.00 (unless I am convinced otherwise when I speak Monday morning with another Brazilian/America agent).

Anyway just in case someone is interested I am discovering that booking from a NW USA point of departure to South America if done 60-90 day in advance can reduce the domestic USA fares by half . . . and probably shave 20% off the international portion.

Whatsmore, a variation if just doing a Colombian trip is . . . flying South out of Miami to Cali (RT $450) monger Medellin and Cartegena, and maybe check out some islands (Rosarios & Andres because airfare in Colombia is CHEAP) then go back a couple weeks later to Miami. Being to Colombia once before I know it is relatively easy (via Medellin) to find a compatible woman for about 10 days of traveling on some safe and beautiful beaches sailing, diving, dune buggy, etc.

Finally beyond Colombia the other seemingly practical tour is going south on the Pacific side to Lima, on to Santiago Chili, over to Argentina and then back to Miami.

So in conclusion . . . rather than trying to combine both RIo and Colombia into one 4 week trip (if time away allows) I am beggining to think it would be better to fly to Rio for 2-3 weeks. Then a few months later fly to Colombia for 2-3 weeks. There is certainly no advantage in combining them in one trip to save air fare.

Currently Kenn on the RIo board has access to a travel agency. I will be discussing with him further potential routes around South America using Rio/SP and perhaps Colombia, or, Buenos Aires as hubs. Tring to combine travel plans between the Atlantic and Pacific side of South America is tricky.

Gotta fly from UK to Colombia this time.

Anyone know any good (=cheap) routes from UK to Bog now there's no direct flights.

Rather avoid the US if I can. Any good routes via Europe or Central America?
Hey, maybe a little late. Next time fly to Dubai and then to Caracas to Bogota. A little longer than flying to Miami but cheaper with Air France I believe. Best of luck. I fly from Frankfurt or CDG to bogota about 4-5 times a year.
UK to Colombia via UAE? That's a terribly uneconomical idea, in terms of both money and time wasted. That's like taking a train from London to Edinburgh, but with a stop in Paris. No point whatsoever unless you actually have some specific reason to be there.

Go through Madrid or Barcelona, both extraordinarily easy to reach from London. Air Madrid, Iberia, Air Plus Comet and Avianca all have flights from Spain to Bogota. There are likely more, but I don't really feel like looking that deep right now.

A hasty search on Expedia yields a few one-way tickets for about 500 Pounds. The cheap flights aren't every day, so you'd have to check with the airlines to see which days of the week they fly into and out of Colombia to/from Europe. I'm sure that if you did a little digging you could find an even better deal. The savings yielded compared to flying via Dubai (?!) would pay for every other aspect of the trip.

Reminds me of a story I heard whilst buying a rail ticket last year: the guy said this lady had turned up rather confused wanting a ticket from Peterborough, or thereabouts to somewhere in Kent, but without having to change in London. She'd run up the helpline, which of course was a call centre somewhere in India, and they had proposed a route that did, strangely enough, involve Edinburgh...

Back to the subject. I too am dubious about via UAE, but its worth checking out next time. This time I wasn't able to find anything cheaper than via the US. AF (via CDG) was next, then AC (via Toronto). Via MAD or BCN was a lot more, so I passed.

TSA, here I come. Wonder what you'll break this time?

TSA, here I come. Wonder what you'll break this time?Okay, I get it... you were looking for something that actually cost less money than traveling via the USA. Yes, you will pay less in cash terms when you transit through New York, Atlanta, or Miami. But you will spend more total time in the air, and like you said, you'll have to deal with the hassle of a Coalition airport... and isn't Heathrow enough? Transiting through Madrid might cost a couple hundred pounds extra (I found one round trip flight leaving Friday and returning Sunday, just as a worst-case last-minute scenario for about £950), but you'll avoid a lot of hassle. Keep in mind that some of the cheapest routes through the USA will force you to transit through two hubs... not my cup o' tea. The ones that send you through only one USA hub cost almost exactly the same amount as those through Spain.

The only reason I can think of going through the USA from London to Bogota is if you'd prefer an English-speaking airline. The cheap ones from Spain to Colombia are naturally Spanish-speaking.

PM me if you'd like to know my sources. All I did was consult a few airline websites. I'd hate to see people transit through the USA if they don't have to. It just makes them arrive at their destination in that much worse of a mood!

I'd *much* rather go via MAD on a Spanish-speaking carrier. Or CDG on AF. But CO were offering LGW/IAH/BOG/EWR/LGW for £640, which is so much less I unfortunately couldn't justify declining a date with the TSA.

And yes, I know that they, and CO's customer-hating service personel (these are, after all, the guys who had me open my suitcases at a busy, backed-up check in to transfer 2lbs of clothing from one case to another so both came in under 50lbs) will have me spitting blood by the time I hit BOG, but isn't that why God invented p4p and alcohol?

Come on you non-US carriers -- get your act together.

Giggity
11-29-06, 11:41
Hehe. So you'll let yourself be molested for a few extra minutes in order to save a couple hundred pounds. The hourly rate for that, I suppose, comes out to hundreds of pounds per hour. So at least you know how much you can get away with selling your body for in the USA! It's best to charge the market rate, or else the TSA will think you're a ****... and isn't it bad enough that they already think you're a terrorist?

As for getting into and out of the country with less face-to-face trouble... perhaps you could ship your clothes to and from Colombia? Or maybe go to Colombia with nothing but the clothes on your back, buying clothes in Colombia, and shipping them back home? I have no idea how much freight rates are in that situation, but it might be worth checking into.

Perhaps I need to lay off this subject for a bit... I'm putting way too much effort into dodging the rubber glove squad.

Oh, and I hadn't thought that AF would go from CDG to BOG. It's actually shorter, too. Good call!

Two weeks to burn. As a one time Philippines, Indon traveler, I'm trying to decide. Columbia or the Ukraine? Plus for the Ukraine, I have contacts and the girls are bit closer to my Eastern European upbringing (Hungarian) - on the other hand - I've been to Cuba, dance salsa and find the whole Latin American thing a bit more "hot" than my cold ancestory.

Hey guys,

I'm leaving for Colombia tomorrow (March 9), but will be spending most of my time with cybercupido chicas. The one exception will be Friday night in Bogota. That's the 16th. I'll be at the Suites Real 85. If anyone wants to hang out that night, PM me. I'm in my mid-30s and speak decent Spanish.

AA just posted a Latin America Sale- first glance looked like 10% - 20% lower travel costs. You will need to purchase by March 19 and travel by June 12.

Took advantage of the American airfare sell - arriving Jun8th for 4 nights. I'm a noob - not sure where I'm going to stay yet - haven't made room reservations yet. I like the freedom aspect that the Mansion and VIP offers but the all-inclusive aspect of Medellin Adventures is intriguing as well.

Many posts for the Mansion and VIP but has anyone out there used Medellin Adventures? Good. Bad?

Hasta Pronto.

Does anyone know how far the city of Tierra Caliente is from Bogota?. I have tried searching for it on yahoo and msn but to no avail. I know it has to do with the hot lands but where the actual city Tierra Caliente itself lies I cannot find. I have a chica that wants to take me there next weekend. Is it a safe place to go check out?. What is the temperture there during the day and in the evenings?.

Tierra Caliente means Hot Land. Its the name for a place with a summer-like temperature. Bogotá is usually cold, so any place with warmer temperature is Tierra Caliente for the people living there. Try Melgar in your search.

Hey What up like minded gentlemen. And I use that term loosely! I will be flying out to Medellin this Friday "the 13th" Have never been, and I am going down there by myself. A bit crazy maybe, but I sure many horny guys have done this before. I will probably hitting the strip clubs, casinos, etc. I usually have no trouble making friends, especially with the ladies, but I guess if anyone is going to be down there at the same time, I would be happy to meet up for drinks if anyone is going out. One thing I can promise. I WILL post some pics that will be amazing. Actually here is a small taste, a video is worth a thousand pics I would say. I see youtube blocked my video but I will upload it again. Lets see if this works.

I'm down to be the photographer and participate in the action of course. Something to spice up these solo voyages we read about. How many pics do we see with 5 or 6 chicas ALL with dick in their mouths having a which "ho" can make their stud finish first. I'm down and looking for some guys that have "NO SHAME IN THEIR GAME". No old potbelly grandpas please. Might slow us down. Would like to do the 4th of July since everything back here at home will be dead. Got $$$$$ no prob and ready to find alot of P4P and non-pros.

I'll be riding solo to Santa Marta 10th. 17th of May to stick a good one that strips for me on web-cam that wants to sing to the mic very bad and another one in Pereira that is begging for some GRINGO CHORIZO. Guys you've got to try the dating sites like www.colombiancupid.com and www.cybercupido.com. You WILL find tons of non-pros begging for GRINGO CHORIZO. Tell them whatever. Ya ya ya ya whatever. Get there and its pantys down FIRST night. Talk dirty to them after a few chats and they LOVE IT. Most have webcams and will do whatever you ask them. MAGIC WORDS ""Somos novios"". Try it and you'll see.

Don't forget got to get at least 3-5 guys ready to Monger ISG Pro-stlye. Lets post a date and where to stay and get contact info to make it happen. We got 2 months to get our shit together. I'm down and ready to go for the gusto. I speak super fluent spanish but my colombianas tell me I sound Mexican. I learned Spanish from Mexicans. What else do you expect. DUUUUUHHHHHH. By the way some of these hotties aren't all quite that brite so be prepared. But they are GREAT sex machines. No common sense needed there. Only skills

American Airlines said Tuesday that it is increasing its service between Miami and Colombia, beginning Dec. 13, when it adds 14 round-trip flights per week.

The additions include one daily flight from Miami to Barranquilla, and three more weekly flights to Medellin. The new flights will operate on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

American will also add four roundtrips a week to its Miami-Bogota service: on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday southbound and Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Monday northbound.

It's only a few blocks (maybe 6 or 8) to the old city. You could walk it.

With a novia and kids, that's a good choice. The place is not chica-friendly however. It's the only place I have ever seen that gives free cigarettes with the all-inclusive. The air conditioning works too well and can't be controlled in your room.

http://www.theapartmentmedellin.com/Apartment1908.html

The price structure for this apartment for 2007 is:

$75 per day, for one person, or a weekly rate of $500

$90 per day, for two people sharing ($45 per person) or a weekly rate of $600

$110 per day, for three or more people sharing
(That's less than $37 per person!) or a weekly rate of $750

Let me know so we can help save each other some $$$$$$. Rather spend it on the chicas. Looks like two young guys are operating these apartments and I doubt problems on the chicas going up to the apartments. If anyone has stayed at these apartments and got info, good or bad let me know

As I read the reports and requests from members, I start to feel like there's something missing. Maybe it's the fact, I am reading the messages and not directly involved with the action. I have been a hedonist in many latin american countries. I've studied spanish with one goal in mind. (I shouldn't have to explain the obvious) I've resourced the data to the max. Yet, something is missing from the experience.
I'm starting to think it's the risk factor. The idea of plucking a fresh flower from the garden of some third world gogo bar has its charm but that's what the casual - no risk monger wants to do. What about some 'On the Edge action!' One has to admit, Colombia has some potentially dangerous but attactive elements that do tweek the senses. Even though it's dangerous (life threatening in fact) how many have you are intrigued with the idea of mongering the small villages and rurals towns? Risking a trip into the complete unknown. It might seem insane but a part of me, fatalistic or not, wants to explore the forbidden zone, just because it would be the journey of a life time. More dangerous than climbing Mount Everest but survivable with the right guides and luck. Is there anyone that has stepped out of their comfort zone and really challenges the fringes? I realize the foolishness of my imaginary safari but, I give it validity because it's an outside possibility.

i'm planning to visit medellin for 4 weeks in november. 2 of these weeks will be vacation, the other two i will work (all i need is high speed internet access). i was wondering if, for that length of time, i'd be better off renting an appartment rather than staying at a place like the mansion where the "activity" might be fun during vacation time, but a hindrance when i have to work during the day. plus there's the being confined in a "room" vs an entire appartment kindda thing...

i'm a relaxed, easy-going guy but i like to do my own thing versus being around folks who party 24 hrs a day. :)

has anyone done both (renting and appartment vs mansion) and what are your thoughts on the pros/cons?

Don't worry about the Mansion having a 24 hour/day party atmosphere. It's pretty quiet from 11 pm to 8 am. Most of the guys are respectful of each other's sleeping habit.

I have met a few guys who have brought work there, and not one had complained that it was too raucous to have any of it done. However, seeing chicks in the living room or by the pool might be a detriment to one's work habit.

Actually, just by browsing on the web, I found a number of apt with monthly rates that more or less mirror those offered at the Mansion. So it doesn't look like finding an apt would be such a difficult task.

If El castillo is quieter, would there be easy access, within walking distance, to restaurants if I wanted to go out for a quick lunch?

I'm still debating the apt vs Mansion/El Castillo conundrum. Even though I'm relaxed, easy-going and not anti-social by any means, I tend to like to do my own thing which is one of the main reasons I'm considering the apt option. And since I speak spanish (a bit rusty, but should come back quickly after a couple of days) I don't think I'd have any problem functionning in a more "isolated" setting. The downside to that of course, since I'll be new to the city, is that I won't be able to benefit from the tips and advice of those who know the scene well.

One more question. I assume that all those paisa hotties are pretty young (18-22). My personal preference however, goes towards slightly older (25-30) women. Does that diminish one's potential choices and "hunting grounds", or it this a non factor?

Thank you for your responses.

Finding something on the web is not hard. Finding something habitable, well-located, furnished, and reasonably priced is hard.

Good luck.

First timer going to Medellin and looking for advice.

First, looking for a wingman that would explore the area with and keep each other safe. NOT looking for a permanent partner. Such someone to brave the unknown together for a few nights/afternoons. Hot chicks is my main goal, but I want to be safe.

I am sociable, not a huge party type but like a few beers to check out the goods.

I am learning some basic spanish. Not sure if it will be any help.

Looking to stay at the Mansion or El Castillo for 5-6 nights. Not sure which is a better fit for me?

Anyone have any experience of how far in advance a room should be booked at either place? Is March a busy month?

March 14-23 Medellin will be dead, especially after the 18th or 19th throough the 23rd... that's easter week. Everyone goes to the beach for Semana Santa. My sense is nightlife will also be pretty lame the weekend of the 7th, 14th, and 28th as Colombians save up their cash for these vacations and of course the weekend after, most will be broke.

If you are planning on those dates, you are better off going to Cartagena if you want nightlife. If you're set on Medellin... choose another month. That's my 2 cents.

Every Sunday in MDE is dead. After around 7:00 pm on Sun., you could shoot a cannon down the Avenida Junin pedestrian mall in Centro.

Not everyone goes to the beach for Semana Santa. Many Paisas living elsewhere come home. The Thurs. and Fri. before Easter are national holidays. Many Paisas who stay in town hit their fincas for the long weekend. But you won't be fucking them anyway.

You should be able to find some goodies over Semana Santa. But you might be better served to avoid this time.

I've been pricing out flights to Colombia and looking at the possibility of flying through Panama City Tocumen International (PTY) and getting a flight with Copa Airlines from there into Colombia.

I'm wondering what the turn-around time is like in PTY. In other words, how much time should I budget between when my US to Panama flight arrives & when my Panama to Colombia flight departs? Customs issues? Delays?

I'm also wondering about the reverse.

I've never flown Copa.

I've never visited Panama City. I'll check out the Panama page for details on this, but I suspect the mongering is better in Colombia and I don't want to linger there - even for a day, I only have a few days to kill.

thanks!

I fly thru Panama all the time for my trips to Colombia. However I plan a night there each way because I have been there a lot and have regulars. Worth checking out some time, but you are right. Colombia in general is better.

The airport itself is not that big considering it is a major hub for Cental and South America. You can easily make quite close connections. I have friends who do this trip from the west coast and have never heard of any problems. You will be surprised how close they book these. Most would probably not be "legal" connections in the U.S. I think they focus on moving the connecting bags first as well. Waiting for my bags in PTY takes forever.

There are no customs issues. You just walk from your gate to the connecting gate. You will clear customs in Colombia. It is basicallly one long terminal with a round gate area at each end. Plenty of duty free shopping in the middle and a lot of eye candy.

When you are on Copa you will not notice any difference from Continental, other than hotter flight attendants. The same is true with Aerorepublica which is now codesharing with Copa. You get all your OnePass benefits and miles. Many of the flights to Colombia are single cabin planes so you may not get an upgrade. But they are very comfortable for the short flight.

I have not done this in 4 years as I refuse to fly through Panama. Why? Because if you do get stuck there, it's 1) pay for the tourist card, 2) pay for taxi back and forth to airport.. about $20US each way, 3) I got a runaround on the hotel... i.e. I went hotel to hotel and everything was steep or booked. I finally settled on around $75US to stay at a complete dump, 4) I than had a cabbie drive me around... ending up shelling out $20US for him and drinks at a local strip joint, 5) the Mongering I saw IMO is just ok... pricing was like $100US and drinks were outrageous. Maybe there are cheaper hotel alternatives if you book and plan ahead or have mongering alternatives if you plan ahead, but in my opinion it is a complete waste of at least $200-300 if you plan on dinner, finding a chica etc.

I do everything I can to get to Colombia... regardless of the city. I much prefer hotel rooms $50 and under, sweet gorgeous chicas where you can find them in any city in Colombia for under $25US if you look in the right place, and not getting shelled on cab rides.

That's my 2 cents. In fact if I can't get to Colombia same day, I'd just assume fly through Miami. Maybe I was just ticked off that I couldn't make the connection which was only 45 minutes, granted they told me it could be done. Put a real damper on my night. i'll never go through Panama again. This was 4 years ago.

Just my opinion,

When I visited Panama recently. All the hot chica's that I ran into at the casa's where from Colombia. But, in Panama they think they are hot stuff and get away with charging double or triple their value in Colombia. Although Panama may offer more to see as in landmarks and the canal, if you are going for a couple of days to hit some chicas, it would be best to avoid Panama and go straight for the action in Colombia.

But if you are going mainly for vacation and to hit chica's on the side, it would be good to stop in Panama to check out the country.

Word

1. La Dolce Vita - Bar where all girls are working. (take out)
2. Pleyboy (yea they spell it that way). A working house. (eat in/an take out)

Most all wanted 200k + Simple offer was "100-150 (depended on my determining their hotness and my want) and id add the the offer.... and we leave RIGHT NOW.

That clenched it every time. No haggel no waiting to see if they are waisting time with you as a client.

Back at place I had drinks, so all stay the night.

Pleyboy does have about the hottest chicas for a casa. However, it is pricey. I never paid the freight there. And it is pretty far from the tourist zone. LDV and the beach is enough.

The BAQ Carnaval is far and away the top party in Colombia. I'd rate the Feria de Flores in MDE second. Cali is not even on the screen plus it is very dangerous.

I agree Tom 10 fold. Its ashame how dangerous Cali has gotten in such a short amount of time, this is when I thought it was getting better last year. My novia is telling me that cell phone robberies are becoming such a common occurance. She now never uses her cell on the BUSETA. Obviously that has been a big impact on the quietness in the Cali thread.

Barranquilla carnaval and the Feria de Cali are both second string or third string festivals. If you make an effort to travel internationally for either one, you'd be disappointed. It's not correct to say that BAQ carnaval is better than the Feria in Cali. I have been to the Cali Viejo parade and it's the equal of a BAQ carnaval parade. That said, they are both so-so, nothing too special.

If you want a party atmosphere, consider the first 2 to 3 weeks in December (any city). While there is no specific festival, you'll find lots of people going out at night. In the big cities it's very hard to find taxis during those weeks, such is the volume of people out and about.

I agree 100% with your 2nd paragraph.

As for the first paragraph, Barranquilla Carnival is a big party and a lot of fun. However, it's not the parade that is so great. If you are looking for just a bad ass nightlife, the bars and discos are packed wall to wall and there are parties galore all over the city... but it helps to know people.

I.e. not everyone gets into the discos because they are so packed and of course you need to know people that are throwing parties or acquaintances of an acquaintance of an acquiantance, etc.

As for the parade... don't expect anything like Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Carnivales in Brazil. The parade is fine for about an hour or 2. But going 3 days straight, after about an hour each day it's kind of like... ok where's the party. That is mainly if you are solo or with a small group. If you are at the parade with a big group of people I guess it can be a lot of fun. It's kind of like going and watching the Macy's Parade or Rose Bowl Parade etc... except that people are drinking, dancing to Carnivales music (Carnivales has it's own music), and acting joyfully/obnoxioulsy throwing flour etc all over everyone in the stands. I actually don't enjoy Carnivales for the parade. I enjoy the atmosphere of the nightlife during the Carnival Weekend. Granted, Im typically pretty hung over at the parade from the previous night of partying all night long. In fact, I've seen people go straight from the partying the night before to the parade the next day... i.e. no sleep... just continous drinking all night and morning, shower, and off to the parade.

I cannot compare Carnivales to the Feria in Cali as I've never been to Cali around X-mas time. My bet is it's similar to what I like about Carnivales.... I.e. discos jampacked wall to wall in the evenings.

Dia de Amor and Halloween (weekend before) are pretty big nights as well.. at least from whatI've seen in Barranquilla. Dia de Amor is much bigger than Halloween by the way.

So to recap... If nightlife is what you want then the best times are...
the few weeks in December leading up to X-mas, Dia de amor y amistad, Halloween (the weekend before), Semana Santa on the Coast (CTG or Santa Marta... not Barranquillla), obvioulsy Christmas eve and New Year's Eve, and the big festivals in the various cities... Carnivales in Barranquilla, Feria de Flores in Medellin, Feria de Cali (last week of December). If you want the best nightlife, those are the nights and it's probably irrelevant the city... Barranquilla, Cartagena, Cali, Medellin, Bogota... with the exception of city specific events. Ah, and puente weekends(3 day weekends) are pretty big... at least on the coast (assuming there are no elections).

Dia de Amor and Halloween (weekend before) are pretty big nights as well.. at least from whatI've seen in Barranquilla. Dia de Amor is much bigger than Halloween by the way.I was in BOG during the weekend of Dia de Amor, went to Andres Carne de Res in Chia which is like the Mango's (of MDE fame) of Bog. It was in-friggin-sane that Sat. night, so packed it was literally difficult to breathe inside the place. It was also payday that weekend for most Colombians and the scene outside the club was intense, a lot of pushing and shoving around just to get inside. Me and my date squeezed into a corner right by the kitchen (by the time we arrived, all the tables were taken hours ago) so we could have space to eat something. Twice that night, I saw bouncers carry an unconscious girl out of the club, probably from exhaustion and lack of fresh air, not from overdrinking as we all know most Colombians have a lot of experience in holding their liquor. :)

Colombians are probably the best in the world when it comes to partying, which is funny because it's not really my thing. I'm a laid back guy, not really into the rumba thing, I don't care much for those jam-packed high-energy places but when I'm on vacation, I'll tolerate it for a couple of nights, like if I'm with a date. I usually avoid peak party periods because I know I couldn't survive such continual madness but it is fun to watch or participate, in limited quantities for me however! :) If it wasn't for the makeout sessions I had with my date, I would have considered it a waste of time and money not to mention sapping all my energy for the next day. I'm in my mid-30s still relatively young but staying up all night for 2 nights in a row really took its toll on me this trip, yikes! :(

To be honest, you're not going to be real successful trying to pick up regular chicas in the city if you're an english speaker only, no matter how attractive you may be.

I agree with TOM. Take a visit to Cartagena first. Get a hold of Mery or Juan and get a condo rented. Visit the famous LDV, get a taste of las Colombianas. Go from there.

If you're serious about meeting regular chicas, you really have to learn spanish. Life is much better with the pros too, and less expensive with spanish ability.

Good luck amigo!

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the great infos. I'm fairly new to the scene. Ok, I'm planning a trip to Bogota in Nov probably from 9th to 25th. Is there anyone who'll be there and want to hang out while not in action? Someone to chat while spotting for the perfect chica I guess.

Will be staying somewhere, possibly VIP, in MDE for the week and have completely open plans. Mid-thirties blond gringo with low to moderate conversational spanish skills.

Open to suggestions, first round on me if anyone wants to meet at Mangos.

I am looking for some advice on a couple of cities to visit. First of all I fly out of Medellin on the 26th of Feb. So naturally I will be staying there for a few days. I am looking at either an apartment or the manison/VIP, which is best. My spanish is at the beginners level, meaning very, very basic.

Now the question are:

1. I am coming from Quito, so I can fly pretty much to any of the cities for about the same price. So what would be better, spend a few days in Bogota or Cartagena, or another city? Again my spanish skills are basic.

I have found some fairly cheap places to stay in either city. Just wonder which is best for someone new to Colombia? Plus which has the better women as far as price and best experience level.

I am not new to South America as I have spent 2 1/2 months between Lima and Buenos Airies. Also as far as beach scene, that is not important as I am spending 5 days in N.Peru beaches.

Any help and advice would be wonderful as I have been looking forward to seeing Colombia this whole trip. I also have a friend who lives in MANIZALES if he home, but again don't know the area. Thanks in a advance.

Does anybody know the availibility and price scale for traveling between Colombia and Thailand during the summer? Has anybody done this?

Thanks,

Can anyone give recommendations on places to stay in Manizales?Appts. or hotels as long as its fairly reasonable.I've searched high and low and i only come up with one hotel called las colinas at $150.US and colombiacupido has furnished appts. starting at $90.US. I'd like to find something for a little less money if i could. my novia has moved to manizales and i will be traveling there every four to six weeks and asking her to find me something is useless.

Hummer,

Mate I have looked into this for a while as I really want to get to Bangkok sometime this year but it seems there is no cheap way around it.

Let us know what you come up with.

Anyone wants to hang out for a beer?

First time in Colombia but traveling dog, used to rough countries. Don't speak Spanish but should be able to communicate in Spanish (due to some other languages I speak).

Let us know what you come up with.GG,

Wondering about getting to a major destination like HK from Colombia, and using Air Asia to connect. There prices are pretty good. I have not had good luck here in the states for finding fares out of other countries. Are you in Colombia, have you checked the price from Col to Thai? If so what are they quoting you?

I really want to experience the Colombian scene and then the Asian scene within the same trip.

What about Mexico City to Bangkok as a way out of there. Maybe better to go from Bog to MC then BKK, as opposed to Bog to BKK ( if that is possible).

Do you know any other members that have tried this?

I am close to booking a 2BR apartment from June 2 - June 10. Looking for a like-minded monger to split the rent. I am from the US (East Coast), lo-key, non-smoker who drinks a litte and like hunting for bargain p***y.

Can be great to hang out as well but not required. PM me if our schedules match up.

Heading to Medellin alone at this point. I am working on a place to stay and have stayed at Vip and the Mansion in the past. I am also thinking of an apartment. Let me know if there are any wingmen available.

Safe travels

Just wanted to see if anyone else will be there during that time. I am staying at the Mansion since this is my first trip and it seemed like a pretty fun place to stay for a newbie to the city. I know there are other places to stay and other reasons to stay at other places but I'll work on that my next trip down if needed.

I look forward to meeting any ISG members as well as AG and his staff. They sound like great hosts. I'll at least get to meet him near the end of my stay. Hey djin, I hope you are still going. I haven't heard from ya'!

Do you know any other members that have tried this? This whole region (including Ecuador where I live) is overly inflated in the airline ticket prices. I recently looked at tickets to get to Europe, South America and Asia from here and they were all very high. BKK was up in the $3,000+ range. The same ticket leaving from Orlando, Florida was $1,200 r/t with taxes. All of the international airlines (Delta, Continental, American - and their partners) use US based connections out of Houston, Miami and New York mainly. The cheapest ticket I found going anywhere in Europe or Asia was Spain for $900 r/t with KLM direct.

I ended up flying to Cartagena from Quito for $360+ each ticket r/t + exit taxes. Everything Colombia seems high. Even their in-country flights are incredibly expensive (over $300 each last time I checked).

HummerYou might also consider buying a r/t ticket to Orlando, Florida (MCO) or Miami (MIA) and flying a r/t ticket to Asia from there. Tickets are cheap right now. I'll fly over there in September myself. Probably out of Orlando.

DavidI flew MDE-CTG before Semana Santa for around US$210 on http://www.aires.aero/Website/Default.aspx. Their web site currently offers MDE-CLO for 100K COP one-way.

After delaying a tour of Columbia for two years it is time. My second term of six months in Ecuador is drawing to a close. I will be taking the bus from Quito to Cali on Monday or Tuesday. If Medellin and Cartagena are the higher end of the market, Bogota mid-range, then Cali as the budget option will probably be my favorite. Who knows how long I will stay (in Cali). Till I take a bullet in the head?! Whatever the case, here I come ...

I always fly to avoid the risk of any problems. Not only that but it's a long ass trip. My wife has taken it a few times in the last 6 months and she wouldn't recommend it for a gringo-looking guy either (and she's half colombian). Frequent stops and searches are supposed to be common as well.

I actually did that bus trip in 1978 and although the information is dated, I still remember it as a long haul with multiple border stops and lots of military.

Given the miniborder skirmishes of the past and the big one where the Colombian FARC rebels were killed, it should still be an interesting ride.

Safe travels.

Found a few extra days in my vacation/comp time stash and bought my tickets for this month. I will be there May 14th to the 21st. Have not secured a place to stay but know a few options that are open.

T10, I sent you a PM since I see you will be in MDE the same time.

I have been there once just last month and can't wait to explore more casas and other sites!

Guys I will be in Cali on July 2nd. From there I will quite possibly be going to Pereria or Barranquilla/Cartagena since I have some credits on Avianca to use up. Anyone around during this time period and wants to go for a drink send me a p.m. I have several hot contacts in those areas.
