Thanks for the good information. I’ve actually been to the Herradera, but it was during the day. When I was there the place was almost empty, the band was just practicing, and there were only a few Chicas and none were desirable. I got into a conversation with a Mexican guy at the Herradera during my last trip, and we started talking about him learning English, and me trying to learn Spanish. He spoke good English, so as we finished our beers, and he helped me with my pronunciations of Spanish words and phrases. I thought I had read a couple of posts here about some open-air bars in N/L. I got the impression that they were not too far from the town square, and that they had some semi-pro activity, but the post didn’t indicate any specific details (directions, names of the bars, etc…). Does anybody know anything specific about the open-air bar scene?

Also, what about strip clubs outside of BT? With a Zona being in N/L, I don’t know if Mexican authorities would allow them to stay open. I know that in Matamoros, where there is no BT, the strip clubs flourish. I know Reynosa has some strip clubs that are not in BT. Just curious.

Saturday night (05-03) in Nuevo Laredo...

This trip I went straight to Papagayos instead of 123 for the start of the night. I met a gentleman named D--- having a beer. I will go meet D--- at the reforma at 5pm and we shall go to the bullfight. After that it is back to papaguyos for one last round then I jump on American at 6:30am on monday and fly to dallas where i will drive to work very happy to have got laid, not gone to jail, and all the other nice realities I can think of. :)

Driving is no really a problem here in NL. A bit of advice though. Should you get stopped again, get the cops badge number if possible and the number off the side of the car. There is a concerted effort by Pepe Suarez and the Governor of this state to put an end to this crap. If you feel you're not guilty of anything, demand to be taken before a judge or their commandante. In most cases, they'll let you go with a warning.

It's strange though. Ive lived over here for almost two years and have never ever been hassled by these cops. Regular or Transito. whereas, living in Juarez, I was continuall paing out bribes.

Spongebob: The only open air bar that comes to mind is straight ahead about 1.5 blocks from the bridge on your right hand side. You can't miss it. Dont know about the action there though. For semi-pros, try the Herradura Club.

Another good alternative is the Massage scene that has poped up her in Nuevo Laredo.

Strip CLubs. Straigt ahead about 4 miles on the main drag you will cross a major intersection after a traffic circle where the traffic becomes 2-way. This is Paseo Colon. Thru that light about two blocks on your right, you'llsee a club called EGYPXIAS. High dollar. Don't know about the action but on the outside it sas "Tourist Mens Club". Tkae that for what it means. Continuin straight on out Reforma, about 5 miles on the right, you will see Colorado Men's Club. Both have strippers. Don't know about other action though.

And then on Lopez Lara, the street you take as you're going to BT, there is a new one down past V. Carranza on the right hand side. Close to the Ford dealership i believe. Never see many cars there so can't tell you too much about it.

This is pretty par for the course as far as the police are concerned in NL. I have driven 40-50 times and only in the last couple of years has the policia been shaking down gringos with american plates but PL's friend is right if you get out of the zona before midnight and there are still lots of tourist around you should be fine. I told one of the girls in the Marabu about this and she said that is correct if you are not leaving til after midnight either take a taxi or pay a local $5 to drive you back. Luckily the last time they got me I had put all my money in my shoes so I only had $40 in my wallet. When the cop demanded $125 I opened my wallet and showed him I only had $40 and he settled for that. Then there is the 2 am road blocks on paseo de lara(looking for gringos). If you keep driving you will eventually get popped (law of averages). They were trying to tell me I was drunk when this just happened to be a night I was drinking mineral water ONLY! When they decided if they took me to the doctor and I was found to be sober they would get nothing they then told me I wasnt wearing my seatbelt (which i was) and that was $125 fine. That was when I decided to offer him what I had in my wallet and get some sleep. I have several friends who got shaken down with the road block, one time I was the passenger and was informed it was a fine for riding while drunk which I promptly told th officer to fuck himself and he never said another word to me? of couse I am a very large person and I was quite pissed at the time.

Yeah, I live here full time in Nuevo Laredo ans i guess fortunately, they've never fucked with me. When they do though, they can take me to the station as far as I'm concerned. Even if you're guilty, it's a hell of a lot cheaper to pay the judge than some asshole that's on the take. Fortunately, right now, we have a bunch of PFP troopers on the streets and Federal Highway Police patrolling thestreets as we have a small and inconsequential drug wa going on here now. Here is update on the price thing. I got the same quote tonight, $75. I replied $60 and she says, "Okay, that is $75 with room included." First of all let me introduce myself.

I'm originally from Southern California. I grew up and lived practically all of my life there (20 minutes from TJ!). So, I've been to TJ literally 100's of times. I still visit often and do still plan to visit TJ at least about 5 times a year. I also love to visit all of Latin America whenever I can. I've been to about a dozen different latin countries, and have had many memorable experiences, with many yet to come!

Now I find myself living in Dallas. I have so far gone once to NL (BT) once, and I went without high expectations, and had a good time. I plan to continue visiting NL on a somewhat regular basis, with some trips to Reynosa and Monterrey thrown in here and there. Anyways, about myself.. I'm in my late 20's and speak pretty good Spanish. I also like to go to clubs and pursue the civilian women!

Any other guys in the Dallas area with the same interests? It might be worthwhile for me to join up with a like minded group of others, and split the driving and expenses. And above all, have a blast.

I definately will plan to keep up with this forum as much as I can.

I was disappointed to find out that Papagayos and a few of the other bars I went to don't serve Pacifico!!! Luckily they have my second favorite, Tecate.

I would like to apologize for taking so long for this but here, finally is the Saturday night report you have all been waiting for. personally, i always walk across and cab it to bt. i wouldn't recommend walking to bt from the border -- it's not nearly as close as tj. btw, if the car is a rental, check your rental agreement, most do not allow the car to leave the us. and if you do drive into mexico, buy some mexican insurance. it's cheap and will save you a world of hurt in the event of an accident (which is very unlikely to happen). perhaps someone else can testify to driving in.

I drive across but walking, take them out of the box and stick the blister pack in you pocket or socks or boots and tell them you got nothing to declare. They ask for your purpose in Mexico, be honest. Tell them you wnet down to get laid.

6. We done covered this one. Attitude is everything. Leave the bullshit at the border. Treat these people with respect and they'll return it. these are proud people and keep in mind most of these girls hate what they're doing but realize it is the nly thing they can do for them and their families to survive. Turns out I was worried for no reason. BT was fantastic! I had a good time, although I didn't get to spend much time in any of the bars. Mid-week is slow. It was a learning experience and like everything else in life, you don't know untill you try.

There were a few instances were knowing Spanish might of helped, but that's only if you want to sit down and have a conversation with one of the girls. All you have to say to the girls is "sucky, f**ky" and they understand that. Most of the time they will say it to you and they will also give you a price. You know why you are there and they no why you are there, so there is no pretense.

Be careful of some of the bar girls. If I'm arriving AFTER 6 PM and am leaving before 8 AM the next morning then no problem...I just park for free in a metered space on Grant Street in the block just before you reach the Posada Inn...that's VERY close to Puente 1 and it's cool.

But if I'm gonna stay over, I've been shelling out $8 for the big riverfront lot that used to be free and that kind of sucks. Anybody got any better options??

I thought it was fairly well known that the chicas and bar owners in Mexico don't seem to understand the whole theory of supply and demand. When things start getting slow they raise their prices in order to make the same money. Unfortunately for them, this rarely works and ends up running off even more business. The girls dont seem to realize that they make more money doing two mongers for 50.00 each instead of one for 80.00. Therefore when it comes to the end of the month they raise their prices thinking they will make more money. They also seem to have raised their pricing before elections but that might have just been a timing issue. I always try to get down there about the third weekend of the month, before they get desperate.

i left at about friday about 3:00 pm, got there at 6:00. parked at $8.00 lot by bridge and walked all the way up to the bridge before i realized that i left the parking lot ticket on my dash, this is all some would need to seal the truck,had to walk back and hide it and leave a $10 there so no matter what i could get out. walked across and went to first bar on the right, last time there had given the waitress some colored sunglasses and she remenbered me, cuba libra $3.00, she told me about a hotel across from the 2nd plaza($34.00 + $10 deposit), my room faced the statue of some dead guy and i could hear the clock tower ringing on each hour. found a guy that used to live in austin(deported back) that i hired to be my guide, i gave him a $20 and he hung out wile i walked around, translated every thing for me and even got me a girl that was about a 6 with a j-lo butt, she came to dinner with us (church's chicken $14.00) and then we stopped at a liquor store and bought some crown $8.00/ cigs for her $3.00. back to girl friendly hotel and all had some shots. back to hotel he left and a bit later she comes back $45 asking anything but the butt, ended up giving her $50. got questioned at bridge and did not declare, got hit on by the dogs at the check point and had to pull over and be questioned and the dog in my suv. did not look threw my stuff. got back to austin at 1:30. the guide idea was great, i have his address and plan to use him again. i will give him a little more money and pay for a few drinks and he will get me anything i want and more importantly, keep me out of trouble. by the way she did bbbj and multiple positions sans ropa after shower, about room girl speed but was a simi-pro looking for rent. backchannel me for guide's address

The Reforma hotel is about 5 blocks up Guerrero st after crossing bridge 1. $38/night and guarded parking lot in rear. Desk clerk will speak english as well. Decent A/C but if you ask for a fan they will give you one. Good restaraunt with a small bar in the hotel as well, you can take drinks to your room. It is nice to walk straight down and have breakfast. I speak fairly good spanish so I called the front desk and the doorman brought drinks to my room for a small tip several times in one night cause I was having a little get together with my chica and didnt feel like getting dressed or if you just by mixers and a bottle they will bring ice to your room (for a small charge of course).

Business has been slow for girls since lap dance clubs are king over *****houses (early 90s) so any girl not slim and pretty enough to dance, has been going to NL and other places to try and make a living.

The nightly hotel rate is about $30, and be sure not to get a room next to the street. I once had a room adjacent to the street and the traffic kept me up all night.

Guys, BE CAREFUL. Nuevo Laredo is a war zone right now with the latest face offs between law enforcement and the narcotraficantes. I was there last night. There were truckloads of cops rolling around BT with uzis, and cops on foot. They seemed very nervous. At about 2 am you could here a pitched machine-gun battle off in the distance. According to El Norte, the Mty newspaper, the narcotraficantes actually were using fucking BAZOOKAS and GRENADES. Meanwhile there has been a rash of assasinations of cops, plus kidnappings and other random murders. For today's installment see:

Btw, if you MUST go to BT I STRONGLY recommend taking a cab from the border and not driving yourself. The cab guys at least have radios and know where the shit's going down.

Well guys, just made a run out to BT, and it's business as usual although there does seem to be a few less room girls out. Too early to tell if PD was going to be open but the usual watering holes were open. Business seems to be a bit slow tonight. DOn't know whether the events of Friday are to blame or if it's just a typical Sunday.

Tell you something else that is just too fucking cool! The entire city of NL Police force is on suspension, Municipal and Transito both. Driving around town, there are absolutely no Police on the streets as is normal. However, the Tampilaupas State Police are up here from Cd. Victoria, heavily armed and looking for a fight. Watch your ass around these guys. They're scary. They're not doing any of the policeyman stuff, stuff riding around acting tuff.

Anybody planning to come down in the next week or two, come on. The regulars know what to do and any of you new guys, take a taxi. Now is not the time to learn to drive in NL. But gawd damn, it's fun out here. Right turns on Red....Don't gotta wait for the light to change if you bother to stop at all. Fucking Cool!

On a serious note though, it speaks a lot for the Mexican society and morality of the people here that in the abscense of any law enforcement, they're policing themselves. The city is quiet and as wonderful as usual for those of us fortunate enough to be here.

Finally made a trip to NL and boystown. drove from Dallas on Saturday and back on Sunday. Papaguyos is cool, no pressure, the girls don't bug like in Juarez bars. Nice selection too.
Started with a door girl $20, to get warmed up, then did a Papaguyos girl $35 plus $15 room charge. This girl was worth every penny, I speak decent Spanish so was able to clarify everything before going to room. But I knew it would be good as she just showed for work and I was her first for the day. And French kissing in the bar got me prepped up good. Stayed in the room a full hour as the door girl had me somewhat drained so was able to pound her good and she seemed to enjoy it as much as I did.
Did one more girl at Tamuku(sp), not very good as I was tired and half drunk. Was out of BT by 1:30 am as we had to get back to Dallas on Sunday.

One thing I noted tho, these girls ask way too much money and a lot of guys pay it, just ruins it for everyone else, I paid $35 +$15, $50, that's more than enough. Some girls ask $70+room, way too much. BT is Mexico, remember that. Most people there don't make $50 a week.

Just had a nice trip to BT, but only was able to stay one night. What I really like about this place is that it is a big walled compound, and everything that you need is inside. I stayed at the Fiesta Inn hotel near BT, but it was too expensive and I will not do that again. Many thanks to everyone that has posted information here, it was very helpful.

The one thing that does take away from this place is that there is no daytime action. In TJ for example, there is an excellent selection during the day. We went into almost every place in BT. The strip clubs were ok and a great place to have a drink in between girls to get your juices flowing again. 123, Tabu, and others were all good. Hey what is up with the Donkey bar. I saw that poor Donkey tied up outside. They keep saying there is a show, but I believe it is just something they do to get you in and buy drinks. They were telling us about a monkey show, but that has to be B.S. I am sure. The door girls were very interesting. They had something for everyone. There were some ladies old enough to be my grandma. There were also some that were really men. There were some nice ones with a price range from $10 to $20. I enjoyed Tamyku and papagayos. Papagayos is the higher class club. I had a girl at each club and enjoyed both of them. Everything in these places is negociable. The girls always start out at crazy prcies. Most prices ranged from $60 to $80 for an hour, but you can bargain that down to $40 even with the best looking girl. I found the rooms at both places to be clean. unlike in TJ, where they are banging on your door in 15 minutes, here you get the full hour. Since it is not that crowded like TJ, the guys have the upper hand as there are more girls and they get deperate especially as the night goes on, which helps the price to go down. In the strip bars they wanted $14 for a lap dance. I thought that was high since for the price of 3 dances you can get laid. Many of the dancers had a look like they did not want to be there. I did not see too many guys go for a lapdance. I am not sure if these girls went out to a room with you or not.

BT could use a few more taco stands with better food. Also I could net get a cigar inside the compound. Other then that I look forward to going back.

Overall, at nine o'clock Saturday BT was a rather dead scene, Papagayos seemed to have the only action going. And even at Papagayos there were slim pickings, and most of those pickings not too trim if you get the drift.

Cherubino was close to leaving with his pesos still in his pocket, but... enter Angelina de Monterrey. 20s, about 125 pounds but still slender, a pretty face and even prettier smile, a pair of enhanced D cups, and long legs that went all the way to the floor. Dress that body in a silky red designer knock-off and she was easily the most stunning thing on the floor. Add to this package a personality and good attitude and you really have a keeper. If the girl that you want can't speak English, you can use one of the waiters to translate for you. In the main, the waiters are quite fluent in English. If you want to use the service of the street girls, however, the ability to speak Spanish is essential. In my experience, these girls only know a few words of English. If you want to use their service, speaking Spanish is essential.

As for taking money in dollars or pesos, with the current exchange rate of $10.90 Mexican peso for each US dollar, I would exchange my money at a casa de cambio right in downtown Nuevo Laredo.

However, with the exchange rate of 11-1 right now and if you are a cheap fuck, change your $$$ to pesos and when the girl tells you $50.00 then give her $500 pesos which will be less than $50.00US, therefore savign you money. However, only a "cheepyskate" would do this to the poor girls!!!! :)

Whichever! It can avoid problems to carry a bunch of $1 bills. Cherubino always packs at least 20-30 for tips, drinks, etc. because getting change from waiters, taxi drivers and the cops watchin the parking lot is a frequent hassle. koshercowboy is back. due to teknikal diffikluties, he was unable to sign on for ages. the teknikal difikulty was not a komputer, it was kosher, he forgot that on wsg is is kosherkowboy, not koshercowboy. anway, kosher will deskribe the ride from ausin to la frontera. it is about 4 hours, due to konstruktion it takes about 30-45 min through san markos and than there is usually a little traffik around san antonio. always watch yoru speed going through sa, kosher has been penetrated with a speeding tcket in past. food is plentiful on way down, but after lytle there are few stops until cotulla. bring lots of water in kase of breakdown, the ride suks and is boring, but 107.5 plays almost the whole way down, puro tejano :)

Once around 4:30 AM I walked into the building where they check IDs and charge tax on Liquor and stuff and there was no one home! I even said Hello a couple of times (Baracho I was) but not a soul so I strolled on past and into Laredo. That was before 911, however it is still pretty chill in the wee hours.

This is golden information. Not sure about other mongers who decide to head (pun?) down there Thursday night, but Marabu and Pimp Daddy's sound like the two choices for me. Or maybe both. But typically I try to stay at one place for a good while, unless it's just obvious that the cards aren't playing out. If I'm in a mellow-out sort of mood, sounds like Marabu will be my first choice, but if I'm in a party mood, Pimp Daddy's could be it.

Mr. G a fellow Austinite how you doing? I'll offer a few tips for any first timer going to boystown.....
1. Park your car on the US side and take a cab to boystown, $10 for everyone. There is nothing wrong with driving in Mexico, its what I prefer, but for your first time its not recommended.
2. Break down your cash to mostly small denominations, 10's, 5's,1's this is helpful when keeping track of your change when paying your waiter for drinks. Its not uncommon for some waiters to try to short change you when you pay with a large bill.
I say again watch your money exchanges with the waiters carefully.
3. When you first arrive to the compound the cabbie will try to drop you off at the main club PapaGayos but don't let him, instead tip him a couple of bucks and ask him to drive you around the compound (4 streets each on block long) so you can check out the girls working out of their rooms. Make a mental note of which ones you fancy so you can come back later or earlier as some guys like to start with a room girl as a warmup.
4. Have cabbie return you to PapaGayos and this is a good starting point. Clubs I had good luck with are PapaGayos, Club 123, Tabu, New Paris Club (this one is a dive but you find diamonds sometimes). Watch out for the clubs on the perimeter streets, not everone is what they appear.
5. If you take a camera be discrete with it and use mostly when you are in the room with your chica, sometimes the cops will hassle you if they see you with a camera and ask you to surrender it or pay a fine.
6. Man this just scratches the surface but you'll have a good time just be cool.

Yes, I'll be heading down to NL (aka, BT) Thursday evening. I came 90% close to having to ditch all plans this week and fly out to Tijuana for a customized demo of our product, but instead, I'm going to do it over the internet from my hotel room in San Antonio tomorrow night. I'm committed from 4:00 PM Central until about 7:00 PM Central. After that, a little time to freshen up, maybe grab a quick bite, then point the car south for the 3-hour drive to the border. Arriving around 10:00 PM, I figure on staying at least a couple of hours to check out the local scene, intake some fluids and expel same (uh, not the SAME fluids...just thought I'd better clarify!!), contribute to the local economy, etc.

Let me know if anyone wants to meet up in San Antonio for a ride down, or otherwise wants to meet up at the border or at any of the spots mentioned on this board.

On the way back from a visit to Boy's Town this month, I stopped
at the Love's Truck Stop at the 13 mile marker on I-35. Next to it is a new adult video store. This is the second of two trips I made to Boys Town this month. Sorry my last report was so badly formatted. I arrived Sep 9, a Tuesday, at midnight. The previous week, I never made it past Papagayo's. This time I was determined to make the rounds. It was about 85 degrees; air conditioning is still a must.

Boys Town mainly consists of three parallel streets. Street One goes from Papagayo to Marabu. Street Two goes from the Pullman to the Star Bar. Street Three, or TS alley, goes from BumBum to El Parasio. Those streets are connected by Front Street, from Papagayos to BumBum, and Back Street from Miramar (by Marabu) to El Parasio. Stay away from the other street which runs behind Papagayo's and Marabu. There are only a couple of clubs there, and it's very dark and deserted.

I started up street one. There were a couple of young door girls just past the dress shop, asking $15 and $20. I crossed the street and went down the path to Marabu. I looked in the window and didn't see any girls at all. Just waiters sitting around with their trays.

I went back and crossed the street again to Tamiko. It was crowded and I decided to check back later. Donkey's Show was very dark; no show during the week. There were a couple of hot girls who were already occupied, and several 3's and 4's hoping the dim light would improve their chances.

I'd like to hear opinions about which places to eat in Boys Town are best. It's all pretty unsanitary, but some places are better than others. I try to plan my eating around my sex, which usually means only having a light meal before going to BT, and then eating snacks between girls to get my strength back.

The place I used to go was on Street 2 about midway up, but that's a convenience store now. I always saw the police eating at a food stand right next to the police station, which is by the entrance to the compound, but that place is never open when I'm there. Where do you mongers eat ?

1) Don Luis Tako stand: We all know where this is, right next to papas. Takos are a buck each, they have added barbacoa to menu in addition to fajita, also fajita plates are available now as well. Great beans as well, 1 buck each.

2) Kosher 2nd's BJ's komments on the perrito guy, the little hotdog stand in front of shamrock. Kosher loves his hot dogs that sit in dirty MX water, he throws em on grill for minute, and kosher tops it with onions, tomoatoes, mustard and salsa. If this guy isnt open, there is also a hot dog stand next to bridge on way back to US

3) Restaurant between Paris and Pimp Daddies: This place has excellent pankakes and steak dinners, cheap! Its a nice place to sit down at an aktual table and eat some chow

4) Akross from TaBu is a quesadilla stand, excellent and gready, very good hot sauce, will make for nasty dump in morning, but TASTY while going down

5) Al pastor takos from stand in front of Tamykos, rest of her menu is not great, but the al pastor is tasty

2) Place akross from Western
3) Any food stand near back alley near the transvestites and gays
4) Stand direktly akross from Pimp Daddies in front of pool hall

Allthough I prefer Papagayos, there was this one time I saw the most preetiest chick on the Cuartitos. Coming to SA on business in a few weeks and wondered if it was worth the time to drive to NL (I've heard its 2-3 hrs) just to be down there for 1-2 hours.

I've had a lot of fun trying new areas - TJ, Ensenada, Houston, Dallas, Chicago (if you haven't, you've gotta try Phil and Mabel's), Denver, and of course many places in CA, and really have the itch to try BT.

Is it cool for a bald-50 year old gringo to be in Boystown, or is it more like Ensenada (20-30 year old party crowd)?

Also, I've heard about some of the places in BT, but if I were planning to go down, I'd probably want to experience a "street girl" and then a "bar pro" - any suggestions?

Being a balding 50-year old gringo shouldn't pose any problem. These girls are less concern in the way you look than the fact that you are a gentleman and that you treat them nicely and with respect.

What a zoo last night! There was a big presence of automatic weapon totin' police and military when I got there at 11:30. At about 2:30, they sealed off the place so that no cars could leave, and then started letting cars leave after very thorough searches. Meanwhile. looking like cheesy holywood extras, some in army uniforms, some wearing all black with wool caps, some with tee-shirts with their various insignia, all hauling those meanass AK47s or whatever they are, gangs of fed police went door-to-door demanding entry to each streetgirl cuartito (pretty funny really) and also did a room-to-room at Papagayo's. And get this--there were NUMEROUS CAMERA CREWS right behind them, some from the local media, getting the room-to-rooms down on VIDEO!!!

BorderJumper, I love NL too, and I agree it usually FEELS safer than comparable US cities. But with all due respect--things are getting WAAAAY out of hand. It just wasn't like this before the last year or so!

Good Report Sigue and thanks for the info. You're right about things getting way outta hand here in NL. We're losing a Police Officer or two every day to the fucking trafficante's. The Mayor recently suspended the entire force pending background checks and drug tests which weeded out 80 officers. Fortunately, the populace in general in NL is able to go about it's businees as usual. We like the presence of these cops in our city and I personally wish the American Police were able to enforce the law the way the Mexican Police do. Have you ever watched the evening news in NL? When a person is arrested, he is shown on TV confessing to his crimes. NO coercion or beating. He's caught, he confesses. And not often are innocent people arrested. Maybe there is something there. DID YOU HAPPEN TO NOTICE, were the video crews news crews or filming for the Police? If the latter, which is common in Mexico, they were doing it to cover their asses from unjust accusations. I've seen the same in Juarez.

Give it time and hoppefully they will get the upper hand in the situation.

What I generally did between rounds at BT was just hang out at Papagayos or Tamyko drinking. You could also check out the strip joints or play pool at the pool hall. Kosher has had a full day. Today he was visited by Kaptain Beavis, who stopped by Austin around noon or so. Kosher showed him apartments that will work for him when he eventually moves here, and we dined at los Kamales on East 7th. Anyway, driving time from SA is 160 miles or so, will take 2.5-3 hours tops. SA-Laredo, a trip to BT, and back to bridge to return to SA kan all be done in a 6-8 hour span, total! Of kource, this depends how fast you drive and also how fast you kum.

KosherKowboy: Was very impressed with Kool beans map, Koshe has been there 3-4 dozen time now, and kould relate to everything, the map is 110% korrekt. Nice job!

allow ~2.5hrs for the drive between SA and Laredo. BT doesn't really pick up until 10:00p. so if you're planning to drive there and back in one night: leave SA about 7:30p, "exercise" in BT for 3 to 4 hours, then head back by 2:00a or 3:00a.

i've done the drive there-&-back-in-a-night thing, and some guys have even done it from austin (+1 hr ea. way), but damn i was f***ing tired on the way back. my advice is to stay in laredo afterwards, even if it's only to leave at 5:00a or 6:00a.

another option, albeit not my first choice, is to bus it there & back. buses leave nearly every hour between Laredo and SA. the SA bus terminal is next to the Adams Mark hotel. SATrans can take you there from the airport for ~$8. a taxi is at least twice that cost. the Laredo bus terminal is ~.75 mile from bridge #1. R/T bus ticket is ~$31 and you don't have to worry about falling asleep behind the wheel. allow 3 hrs there and 4 hrs back, though.

Thanks. I'm a programmer with no tech drawing experience. I used plain old Paint. Shrinking it to fit the image size limit made it fuzzy, so maybe Jackson can make an exception to post a higher-res version of the map to the Photo gallery.

Post corrections and suggestions, and I'll try to incorporate them into future versions. I'd like to flag the bars that are mostly for the locals, like Siete Negro and most of the bars along the bottom of the map, since sometimes gringos are unwelcome there. I also need more info on which bars are TS.

What's next ? Heck, why not clickable links to photos and reports for specific door and club girls?

Restaurant reviews? Hotel ratings? The mind boggles.

ap: mexican deserters start drug turf war

nuevo laredo, mexico - members of an elite mexican army unit have deserted and formed a drug gang, using their military training to launch a violent battle for control of this border city, mexico's top anti-drug prosecutor said in an interview with the associated press.

the war for nuevo laredo is unlike other recent drug conflicts — it's a turf war involving most of mexico's major cartels in broad alliances not seen in a decade. it has the mexican army fighting an organized unit of former comrades, and it has cost american lives.

"they are extremely violent, and they are very much feared in the region because of the bloodshed they unleash," jose santiago vasconcelos, mexico's top anti-drug prosecutor, told ap.

the battles, which have taken 87 lives since 2002, have involved unprecedented alliances among mexico's drug cartels, according to nuevo laredo police commander martin landa herrera.

"i don't think anything like this has happened before in mexico," he said in an interview. "i have never heard of this many cartels fighting for one piece of territory."

known as the "zetas" or "z"s, the new drug gang — which appears to have won control of the city — is led by former members of an elite paratroop and intelligence battalion that was posted to the border state of tamaulipas in the 1990s to fight drug traffickers.

vasconcelos said about 31 of the estimated 350 members of the special air mobile force group, posted to the border state of tamaulipas in the 1990s, had deserted and joined the drug turf war.

"they have high-powered weapons, training and intelligence capabilities," landa herrera said of the zetas, whose name comes from the radio code word designating a police commander. "they have even tapped our radio communications. they listen in on us."

the defense department has refused to confirm any of its soldiers formed the zetas. but the army recently began posting wanted posters across the country offering rewards for the deserters, some still pictured in army uniforms. that led to speculation the soldiers were behind the zetas.

the skirmishing began in 2001 as a dispute among local drug gangs that operated with the permission of reputed gulf drug cartel leader osiel cardenas. by early 2002, the battle had heated up enough that the zetas appeared, working as hit men for cardenas in a bid to restore order.

but cardenas' arrest march 14 during a shootout in the nearby border city of matamoros opened the floodgates for a wider conflict. with cardenas in jail, cartels across mexico — michoacan, ciudad juarez, sinaloa and possibly tijuana — sensed weakness and tried to move in on the territory.

escaped sinaloa drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman reportedly allied himself with the juarez cartel, sending in gunmen to take over nuevo laredo. at the same time, another local trafficker tried to form an alliance with the valencia cartel, based in the western state of michoacan. and police even arrested a midlevel operator for the tijuana-based arellano felix cartel in nuevo laredo.

such alliances — and an all-out war between multiple cartels — haven't been seen since the wars between mexican gangs in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

"we're seeing these alliances, but this is just proof of the crisis these gangs are in," vasconcelos said. "there is no one single group strong enough anymore to dominate the territory."

the zetas do appear to have the upper hand and are still linked to cardenas, city police say. while dozens of hired gunslingers from other cartels have died, vasconcelos said only a few zetas have been killed and only one or two have been captured.

the zetas have killed dozens of rival traffickers, trading shots from passing sport utility vehicles on the streets of nuevo laredo. in one attack, they engaged in a shootout in broad daylight just yards from where the city's mayor was attending a flag-raising ceremony.

the zetas sometimes leave their victims' bodies packed in car trunks. in one massacre, they wrote information about a rival gang on a wall above a pile of victims, encouraging police to dismantle the other group.

nobody has to tell houston resident noe villarreal how vicious the war has become. on sept. 27, a commando of at least 30 masked men carrying assault rifles kidnapped his brother — hayward, calif., businessman juan villarreal garcia — from his mexico home in sabinas hidalgo, a town south of nuevo laredo.

the gunmen had fanned out across the town in search of a rival. they killed two policemen, kidnapped seven people, burst into villarreal's home — in a possible case of mistaken identity — and dragged the 78-year-old tortilla-store owner away.

the other hostages were released soon afterward, but villarreal remains missing and is presumed dead. the area is so violent that nobody is sure who kidnapped him or why.

"i don't know if it was the zetas," said noe villarreal, "because the zetas have never released anyone alive. that's not their style."

it wouldn't be the first time that americans have died in the conflict.

a wild pre-dawn battle on aug. 1 in nuevo laredo left at least three dead — one of them a man from laredo, texas — and six wounded. police and army troops exchanged fire with cars believed to be carrying drug traffickers.

the three were killed when their suv exploded after police bullets hit the vehicle's gas tank.

and in june 2001, a couple from laredo, texas, — sylvia solis and juan villagomez — were kidnapped by drug traffickers, although it is unclear why. she was raped and strangled. he was beaten and buried alive.

MAP - BORDER TO BOYS TOWN

NOTE: I don't recommend that you drive your car into Mexico to Boys Town. The $10 taxi ride is much safer. But FYI -

This is the way that the taxi drivers usually take to BT.

If I've made any mistakes, somebody PLEASE correct me quick, because I don't want to send my fellow mongers on a wild goose chase into Mexico.

This is the only map I could find of Nuevo Laredo, and it's too small to read. When you come across the border you are on Guerrero, but you want to take an immediate right on
the street that parallels the Rio Grande: Acuana or something.

Follow that until it turns into Lopez de Lara, and go down that street until you get to Anahuac. WARNING: There are two streets with Anahuac in the name, and you want the second one. It's a little past the fancy walking bridge that crosses Lopez de Lara. You'll know the bridge when you see it.

Go right on Anahuac and make a right turn right before the Pemex gas station on your right. The south wall of Boy's Town is just behind the gas station.

The blue line on the map shows the way that the taxi drivers usually take on the way back.

Cool Beans requested that I removed his map from this report because he believes that it is inaccurate. His information in the report is accurate, but the map is wrong. He further advised me that he expects to post a correctly revised map in the near future.

Bridge 1 is in the upper right, BT the lower left. Take one of the main streets due south from either bridge until you find Anahuac. If you turn left as soon as you get across the bridge, this will curve around to Lopez de Laura. Once you find Anahuac turn west and immediately after passing under the railroad tracks turn back north on Monterrey. The entrance is about 300m on the left. Turn west at the guard house into the compound.

Save the image file and print it out 8½x11 and it is just readable.

I read the article "Mexican Deserters Start Drug Turf War" and it appears this has been going on for two years now. I went to NL about 10 to 15 times between Aug 2002 and August 2003 and never had any problems.

I assume the danger was prevelent each time I went but nothing ever happened.

So... Are we saying that suddenly there are gun battles going on in Boystown? I thought the main problem was the camera crews exposing NL as a place of ill repute.

Does anyone else have a take on this?

I would love to take pics of NL boystown chicas and post them, and I've noticed that others, like JT, have taken them. But the cabbies warned me to not have a camera in boystown. Also, I read a post on another site where a mex cop harassed another monger and searched him for a camera and knife. Is a camera really not allowed?

Kuestions:

1) Where is BT?

BT is about a 10 minute ride from border in a taxi, it costs 10 bucks EACH way and kabs are plentiful

2) What about hotels?

Hotels in MX, 99.9 % girl friendly, range from 20 a night for el cheapos to $90 a night at the Hilton, just 5 min from BT

Hotels in the US are Motel 6, Red Roof Inn, Hampton INN, and the likes, all 45-60 for the night and a 3 mile drive to border. The Rio Grande Plaza and La Posado offer the ability to walk to and from MX without driving, parking is free for guests. unless a girl has a VISA to kum and go, you kan NOT bring your chika back to US

3) Where do I get Viagra?

Viagra is sold in EVERY farmacia in the centro, right akross bridge, you cant miss it. Kosher rekommends any of the farmacia calderon, yellow signs, but any place will do. If you stay in Laredo and drive to bridges, there are parking lots for $ 8 a night, $ 2 an hour, well lit, and for 50 cents you walk akross bridge, 20 cents to walk back

17) Can I bring pills back?

Refer to the US CUstoms and TX Dept of Publik Safety for this, answers vary and its advised you have a preskiption for anything you bring back.

18) What about OXY?

This is ILLEGAL, DO NOT attempt to bring it to US, you will do time if you try, if you buy it in MX it is still illegal to take it, weird laws, stay away!!

19) Kosher, have you ever had problems at border?

No, but I have been stopped several times to deklare, and they ran komputer check. ALso, at 14 mile checkpoint, make sure you have a preskription for any pills, customs/immigration/Laredo police,TX troopers, kounty mounties are all separate yet work together, do not be a wiseass, play by the rules and have fun

I am not familiar with Nuevo Laredo at all but I can tell you something about DVDs. Mexico is a region 4 country, USA is region one. If you do buy a DVD in Mexico make sure it is a region 0 or multiregion. If not you will need a multiregion DVD player. Luckily Mexico broadcasts in NTSC rather than PAL so you will not need a NTSC/PAL convertor.

I have been buying DVDs from a Spanish website. Spain is region 2 and broadcast in PAL. I have a Philips machine (From Sears) which is multiregion and has a convertor. Just some advise from the filthy one.

i never bring anything with me to bt except cash and a texas dl. i figure that if i don't have an atm card the cops aren't going to shake me down for more than what is in my pocket. so far, i have minimized my loses and avoided the pokey. i hope my luck keeps up.

Unfortunately, kidnapping is still endemic in Mexico--just take a look at the US State Department Consular Information Sheet . It was endemic in the US too up to the 1930s, but was almost totally eradicated after it was made a federal crime--a rare success story, I guess.

About going back: I hope I have enough self control NOT to, at least until the drug violence settles down and all the extra cops get out of town. Why then? Well it's fundamental--if you have that many underpaid cops around town, they WILL prey on BT mongers, who are lucrative, easy targets.

I also wonder if credit card companies would help with this. Whenever I withdraw any significant amount of cash from an ATM in Mexico from my credit card, they disable cash advance altogether, and call me asking if there was fraud.

I've made on the order of 50 trips to BT (PN & NL) in the past 6 months, and have driven all around NL a LOT during the midnight-4AM timeframe, so it's a small miracle I haven't been tagged yet. I wonder if Piedras is any safer? I see MUCH fewer police there than in Laredo (lots of military, but they seem honest and don't even try hassling gringos).

Cherubino got shaken down a couple of weeks back. The transit cops said the infraction was running a red light... and that for $20 they could make it go away. That just did not seem like the time to be asking for their badge numbers.

The ever intrepid monger Cherubino made another appearance in BT on Saturday night. It took real effort because a busted radiator hose left the wheels dead on the side of the road. FYI: If you have AAA they will come into Mexico to tow a disabled vehicle to a garage on the US side, but the can come only to the Mexican side of the bridge and/or the permits office to cancel a temporary importation permit. Break down and you are looking at one Mexican wrecker to get you TO the bridge and then AAA to get across it. Twice the fun!

Anyhow, the big adventure delayed arrival a few hours. Papagayos was full at midnight. Marabu almost empty, as usual. The PFP or Federales, Black and White Vehicles, are generally thought to be incorruptable as these are the best paid law enforcers in Mexico. They are young, well paid, well educated, most of them with a University education. well equipped. If you notice their vehicles, they are all equipped with Video rigs and they use them every time they stop a person. You also have a Special Investigative Group of commando style PFP driving Green Jeep unmarked Cherokees that you'll never have contact with unless you are into big time drugsd or staying at the Villa Real which is where they stay when up from Cd. Victoria. Nice bunch of guys and gals if you get an opportunity to talk with them. Lastly, the military is young kids,conscripts actually and generally you won't have a problem with them. On a trip to Queretaro last year, we went through 12 Army checkpoints and these kids were extremely polite and well mannered although there was a minute of concern when they asked suspiciously about the dildo shaped XM radio antenna on the top of my SUV.

Just some general advice though when coming down here. If you are stopped and hassled and you are not carrying anything illegal and are relatively sober, challenge the bastards.
