" these are the major reasons that sex is more available in china than in mexico or afghanistan. poverty brings the price down as asndragon points out but there is also poverty in mexico where, despite legalization of prostitution, sex is not so easy to obtain especially from non pros. there is poverty in afghanistan. check the afghanistan board to see how many pros are available in kabul. but it goes beyond the lack of inhibiting religious factors. think about the following. during the mid qing dynasty (maybe 140 years ago, just before our civil war), the emperors upon coming of age, would order the local provincial governors to send hundreds of beautiful women to the capital to be considered as his concubines. perhaps 3000 of the most lovely angels "under heaven" would arrive. the imperial judges would then competively choose one third of these for superiour beauty and the 2000 not chosen would be sent back home. the chosen 1000 would then undergo inspection of their private parts (nice job for an imperial judge). those 300 with the most lovely xiao mei meis would then enter the imperial inner chambers for one year. each night, the emperor would bed down with one of the 300 or perhaps two or three. after a year, he would choose about 50 to remain with him for life. this was the emperor, the highest political and governmental figure and considered a relative of god, an example to follow for the populace. this way of thinking still persists. asndragon talks about availability and price of sex in taiwan. i visited taibei for a few nights in the summer of 2004. it was incredibly hot and i needed a haircut. i found a barber shop near my hotel. while the cute female barber was chopping my locks, i heard moaning coming from behind a curtain on the other end of the shop. peeking through the curtains i saw that another barber was providing a customer with the joyful agony of fellatio. excited by this, i asked my barber if she would also provide that service which she agreed to do at a price much lower than i would have paid in la but certainly higher than beijing. this is my only experience in china outside of the mainland but enough to suggest that it is the culture not the economy that largely determines availability.

Totally agree with P 13 about the inhibiting effect of Christianity and Islam on sex availability. He may not be correct about a similar effect of womens liberation on sexual availability. Womens lib advocates are divided about whether prostitution liberates women or enslaves them. I come down on the liberation side of that argument. Think about this. Two smart and pretty 20 year old farming girls move from rural Jiangsu province to Shanghai. Xiu Xiu gets a job as a secretary for 1000 kuai per month. The other girl, Mi Mi, gets a job as a sauna xiaojie for 1000 kuai per night. After working for two years, Xiu Xiu has finally earned enough to enter a trade school while Mi Mi has new home for her parents, a car, is attending night school at a prominent university and has a modern apartment. Which woman is "liberated"? Those countries with the least liberation (Islamic and strict Christian culture countries) have the least prostitution. In modern China, women enjoy relative equality (certainly not perfect). Of my professional friends here, many, though not most, are women doctors, lawyers, business people. And some of thes fuck like pretty bunnies.

I think that if you take the 1.4 billion number and accept it, then subtract the 200-300 million who have money, then you have 1.1-1.2 billion people who have not too much money. Describing an encounter with a prostitute in a Qingdao hotel, a writer in Lonely Plant wrote: "After more than two months of traveling in China, I was never approached by prostitutes—that is until I got to Qingdao. No sooner had I check into my room at the Beihai Hotel than there was a knock on my door. I opened it to find a miniskirted young woman offering her 'massage' services for sale. I turned down her offer, then headed out to see the sights of the city. Less than an hour later, I was approached by another prostitute."

Rise in Prostitution

Prostitutes used to be found mostly in well known bars and karaokes in the major cities. Now they are found everywhere: on university campuses, in residential neighborhoods and even at Wal-art stores in almost every town in every province Customers are often secured through cell phone and Internet services.

These days there are so many prostitutes that an oversupply has forced prices down. Workers that earned $30 a trick in 2005, could only make $20 in 2006 and were earning only $13 a trick in 2007. One 22-year-old prostitute told the Washington Post, “Though the price has gone down, the number of customers is up. I used to receive two visitors before, and now I have to do three to four a day. My income is the same. I just have to work a little harder.”

The rise in prostitution is more a manifestation of a lack of well-paying jobs than a loss morality. Many prostitutes send a large portion of their income to their families and to their hometowns. One prostitute who worked in a textile factory and as a dishwater in a hotel before turning tricks told the Washington Post, “There was a karaoke parlor in the hotel.. .And all the girls didn’t have to work at all. Yet they made big money. I worked all day and made 400 yuan [$53] a month. it’s because of money that I became ‘bad,’ and joined the business.”

Prostitutes are called "xiaohie," or “miss.” In Beijing there are sometimes called chicken girls." In parts of southern China they are known as "cows." Popular brothels often shuffle in new girls every week to attract repeat business. Many prostitutes are migrants from rural areas to the cities. Many willingly chose to work as prostitutes for $50 per trick rather than work for $50 a month in a factory.

A study of the sex industry in rural China found “ a lot of young girls want to get rich so badly and want to make use of their beauty before it slips away. They consider working hard a waste of time and feel their looks are a waste if they don’t take advantage of them immediately.”

In industrial towns many of the prostitutes, hostess and dance hall girls are women who have been laid off from factory jobs. A 20-year-old women in Shenzhen who works out of a back-alley. two-room massage parlor and has sex with four or five men a day told the New York Times she took up prostitution after she lost her factory job and was unable to get a new job unless she paid a bribe she couldn’t afford because she lost her identity card. “I was really terrified at first, and I was really embarrassed and didn’t even know how to use a condom. I didn’t have any choice, though. Little by little you get used to it.”

One prostitute told Time, “I’m always a little scared. Sometimes men beat me up or they’ll refuse to pay after we have sex.” The goal that many prostitutes have is find a sugar daddy and get off the street and become a concubine.

Sometimes Chinese girls don’t like foreigners. One American man told Theroux that a Chinese pimp had told him, Americans "are too big in their penis. The girl is Chinese. She is very small. It will hurt her too much."

Women Willingly Seeking Work as Prostitutes

An increasing number of young women in Yunnan Province are willingly going to Thailand and Malaysia to work as prostitutes or are being ordered by their families to work in brothels in these countries because the money is good. Girls from the Dai minority are particularly sought after in Thailand because they are regarded as beautiful and their language is similar to Thai.

One 20-year-old woman in the Mekong River village of Langle told the New York Times, “If you can’t go to Thailand and you are a young woman here, what can you do? You plant and you harvest. But in Thailand and Malaysia I heard it was pretty easy to earn money so I went....All the girls would like to go, but some have to take care of their parents.”

The girls work in bars and most of the money they take in tricks goes to their pimp or brothel owner. The money they earn comes from “tips” by customers. Many make their way across the border hidden in the baggage compartment of buses and hope to get lucky and meet and marry an overseas Chinese or at least bring enough money back for a better life for themselves and their families.

Many are unable to save much even after a couple of years. Some do quite well and this is often reflected by the nice homes—with satellite television, air conditioning, generators and tile designs—owned by their parents. Some families with several daughters live in chateau-like homes with chandeliers, leather-covered sofas, golden Buddhist altars and fancy home entertainment centers. Dai boys often don’t like the set up because the girls who return from Malaysia and Thailand come back snobby and don’t want to have anything to do with them.

Many brothels are fronted by saunas or karaoke bars and many massage parlors are located in barber shops or beauty salons. Prostitutes work places that cater to all kinds of clients: businessmen, foreigners, professionals. The owner of one massage parlor told the Washington Post he makes about $2,000 a month and is supported by local officials who take a cut of his profits.

One man asked Theroux if he wanted a girl and then told him "I can get you a very dark and private corner in the park, so you can be alone with her." Theorux said he was told about one brothel run by public security police where "customers can feel safe that they won't be raided."

Freelance prostitutes, who work out of beauty parlors, often meet different clients at different places, taking calls from different salon managers on their cell phones. Pimps sometimes solicit foreign customers in the sock department of Wal-Mart in Shenzhen, at first asking for $150 a night for girls displayed on their cell phones and then dropping the price to $80 a night.

Hostess Bars and Three-Accompany Girls

In China, there are many hostess bars, places where young ladies entertain, chat up, flatter and pander to male customers by lighting their cigarettes and pouring their drinks. The women generally don't have sex with the male customers. Hostesses are generally prohibited by their employees from dating their customers after they get off work.

Women who work at nightclubs, hostess bars and karaokes are often called "san pei xiaojie" (literally "three accompaniment girls," meaning drinking, singing and dancing). They “accompany” men as they drink, dance and sing karaoke. Although many limit themselves to serving drinks, singing and dancing others will do more if the price is right.

Describing the Golden Age Mistress Bar in Shanghai George Wehrfritz wrote: "hostesses in white satin dresses sit and drink with the clientele, toasts radiate with mildly risqué pre-revolution showgirl revues...a dance troupe wearing bustiers and exotic shrubbery wiggled to a pair of disco songs extolling the virtues of oral sex."

According to survey there are 100,000 san pei girls in the city of Shenyang alone. Even if only a small number of them are actually prostitutes, they add up to a large number. San pei girls are often victims of robberies and AIDS.

Penalties for Prostitution

The penalties for engaging in prostitution are generally pretty light, with those getting caught generally getting a few months in jail and fines at worst. Instead of closing down known brothels officers with the Public Security Bureau prefer to crndone off the neighborhood where prostitutes live and issue fines for people with no residence permits. Most can get off by paying a bribe to a policeman or official.

In Shenyang in Liaoning province and Puian in Fujian province prostitution is not only tolerated but even encouraged by officials who tax the san pei girls at a rate of between 100 yuan and 300 yuan a month. One pimp told the New York Times, "The police here are all my friends." He then he explained that he is former policemen himself.

Occasionally the penalties can be quite harsh. In Foshan, a town outside Shenzhen, a man was sentenced to death and his sister was given life in prison for running a prostitution ring, which had only been in operation for three months and had netted only $1,000. It is widely believed the brother and sister received such severe penalties because they were migrants and they presented a threat to local businesses. In Beijing, a madam who was charged with pimping "more than a dozen" prostitutes out of a hotel, bath house and restaurant she partly owned was sentenced to death. She appears to have been unluckily picked out to make an example of.

Crackdowns on Prostitution

In January 2006, authorities launched a crackdown on massage parlors and discos in Shenzhen as part of a clean up campaign. More than 3,000 people took the streets to protest the action and thousands of armed police were deployed to maintain order.

In November 2006, police publically paraded about 100 women and their alleged johns during a crackdown on prostitution at karaoke bars, saunas and barbershops in the district of Futian in Shenzhen. The offenders, dressed in identical yellow smocks and black pants, were sentenced to 15 days in jail and were forced to walk down the streets as television camera rolled and loud speakers read out their names, their addresses and the misdeeds they had been accused. Newspaper photographers snapped their pictures and thousands of residents looked on.

The action appeared to have been aimed at publically humiliating the offenders and use them as an example. Many Chinese were outraged the police would violate the privacy of the offenders in this way and were particularly incensed because the tactics were like those used in the Cultural Revolution. Internet chatter generally sympathized with accused prostitutes and sharply attacked what the police had done. One person quoted in the New York Times wrote: “Even people who commit crimes deserve dignity. Must we go back to the era of the Cultural Revolution.”

One Shanghai lawyer told the Washington Post, “These people were just alleged criminals. It was not yet determined that they had violated the law. The police publically humiliated them, which violates the legal process. This brutal form of punishments has long been abandoned by our society with the development of civilization and a legal system.”

Sex Tourism

Sex tourism is a big business in China. Almost every five-star hotel has a group of women hanging around that offer a variety of services for male travelers. Many hotels, including state-owned ones, employ the prostitutes themselves.

A Japanese restaurant in Kunming, Yunnan Province used to serves sushi and sashimi on the bodies of scantily clothed women Young attractive grills were hired for the job. They reportedly showed up for 30 minutes and had their body chilled in an ice room before lying on a table to have food served on them.

In September 2003, Japan got a lot of bad press when reports emerged of 380 Japanese businessmen with a construction company running around with 400 Chinese prostitutes in hotel in Zhuhai, China. One of the prostitutes told the Washington Post she was with three of four Japanese men. “They had a big party. On my floor, at least, they had girls in every room.”

The Japanese businessmen arranged for prostitutes through the hotel’s Japanese marketing department, paying $145 for each woman according to the Beijing Youth Daily. The incident drew more publicity than it otherwise might of because it occurred on the anniversary of the beginning of the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in 1931. The hotel was closed temporarily. Several hotel workers were arrested and forced to take “emergency study sessions.” The Japanese government conducted an investigation.

Foreigners caught hiring prostitutes are usually fined and released.

Chinese Prostitutes Outside China

Large numbers of Chinese women work as prostitutes in Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan and other places in Asia. Many of these women arrive with tourist visas and are brought in with assistance of organized crime gangs.

By some estimates 10,000 mainland Chinese girls and women are brought to Southeast Asia every year to work in the sex industry. In some cases the sex traffickers recruit girls and young women from ethnic minorities in Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces, near the borders of Vietnam, Burma and Laos and smuggle them through the jungles to work at brothels in Southeast Asia.

Some are promised jobs in factories or restaurants and then forced in the sex trade. Some are outright kidnaped. But many go willingly, attracted by an opportunity to make some money and get out of their villages.

An increasing number of young women in Yunnan Province are willingly going to Thailand and Malaysia to work as prostitutes or are being ordered by their families to work in brothels in these countries because the money is good. Girls from the Dai minority are particularly sought after in Thailand because they are regarded as beautiful and their language is similar to Thai.

One 20-year-old woman in the Mekong River village of Langle told the New York Times, “If you can’t go to Thailand and you are a young woman here, what can you do? You plant and you harvest. But in Thailand and Malaysia I heard it was pretty easy to earn money so I went....All the girls would like to go, but some have to take care of their parents.”

The girls work in bars and most of the money they take in tricks goes to their pimp or brothel owner. The money they earn comes from “tips” by customers. Many make their way across the border hidden in the baggage compartment of buses and hope to get lucky and meet and marry an overseas Chinese or at least bring enough money back for a better life for themselves and their families.

Many are unable to save much even after a couple of years. Some do quite well and this is often reflected by the nice homes—with satellite television, air conditioning, generators and tile designs—owned by their parents. Some families with several daughters live in chateau-like homes with chandeliers, leather-covered sofas, golden Buddhist altars and fancy home entertainment centers. Dai boys often don’t like the set up because the girls who return from Malaysia and Thailand come back snobby and don’t want to have anything to do with them.

Prostitutes, Barber Shops and Karaokes

Many brothels are fronted by saunas or karaoke bars and many massage parlors are located in barber shops or beauty salons. A reporter for the Washington Post walked by a beauty salon and was told by a tout, "Hey, foreigners. I've got the best you can imagine—virgins, experienced pros, cheap and they are ready for you. Come try one." Pimps outside barber shops boast that their girls are cheap, beautiful and da pao ("set off a bang"). The usual charge is around $25.

Prostitution and karaoke often go hand and hand. By one count there are over a thousand karaokes in the Guangzhou-Shenzen area that offer the sexual service of 300,000 women, most of them migrants from Sichuan. The Enjoy Business Club karaoke parlors in Shenzhen have singing rooms in the downstairs rooms and sex upstairs in private rooms.

Prostitutes work places that cater to all kinds of clients: businessmen, foreigners, professionals. The owner of one massage parlor told the Washington Post he makes about $2,000 a month and is supported by local officials who take a cut of his profits.

If love hotels or back rooms of a karaoke are not available there is always the local park. One man asked Theroux if he wanted a girl and then told him "I can get you a very dark and private corner in the park, so you can be alone with her." Theorux said he was told about one brothel run by public security police where "customers can feel safe that they won't be raided."

Freelance prostitutes, who work out of beauty parlors, often meet different clients at different places, taking calls from different salon managers on their cell phones. Pimps sometimes solicit foreign customers in the sock department of Wal-Mart in Shenzhen, at first asking for $150 a night for girls displayed on their cell phones and then dropping the price to $80 a night.

Hostess Bars and Three-Accompany Girls

In China, there are many hostess bars, places where young ladies entertain, chat up, flatter and pander to male customers by lighting their cigarettes and pouring their drinks. The women generally don't have sex with the male customers. Hostesses are generally prohibited by their employees from dating their customers after they get off work.

Women who work at nightclubs, hostess bars and karaokes are often called "san pei xiaojie" (literally "three accompaniment girls," meaning drinking, singing and dancing). They “accompany” men as they drink, dance and sing karaoke. Although many limit themselves to serving drinks, singing and dancing others will do more if the price is right.

Describing the Golden Age Mistress Bar in Shanghai George Wehrfritz wrote: "hostesses in white satin dresses sit and drink with the clientele, toasts radiate with mildly risqué pre-revolution showgirl revues...a dance troupe wearing bustiers and exotic shrubbery wiggled to a pair of disco songs extolling the virtues of oral sex."

According to survey there are 100,000 san pei girls in the city of Shenyang alone. Even if only a small number of them are actually prostitutes, they add up to a large number. San pei girls are often victims of robberies and AIDS.

Penalties for Prostitution

The penalties for engaging in prostitution are generally pretty light, with those getting caught generally getting a few months in jail and fines at worst. Instead of closing down known brothels officers with the Public Security Bureau prefer to crndone off the neighborhood where prostitutes live and issue fines for people with no residence permits. Most can get off by paying a bribe to a policeman or official.

In Shenyang in Liaoning province and Puian in Fujian province prostitution is not only tolerated but even encouraged by officials who tax the san pei girls at a rate of between 100 yuan and 300 yuan a month. One pimp told the New York Times, "The police here are all my friends." He then he explained that he is former policemen himself.

Occasionally the penalties can be quite harsh. In Foshan, a town outside Shenzhen, a man was sentenced to death and his sister was given life in prison for running a prostitution ring, which had only been in operation for three months and had netted only $1,000. It is widely believed the brother and sister received such severe penalties because they were migrants and they presented a threat to local businesses. In Beijing, a madam who was charged with pimping "more than a dozen" prostitutes out of a hotel, bath house and restaurant she partly owned was sentenced to death. She appears to have been unluckily picked out to make an example of.

Crackdowns on Prostitution

In January 2006, authorities launched a crackdown on massage parlors and discos in Shenzhen as part of a clean up campaign. More than 3,000 people took the streets to protest the action and thousands of armed police were deployed to maintain order.

In November 2006, police publically paraded about 100 women and their alleged johns during a crackdown on prostitution at karaoke bars, saunas and barbershops in the district of Futian in Shenzhen. The offenders, dressed in identical yellow smocks and black pants, were sentenced to 15 days in jail and were forced to walk down the streets as television camera rolled and loud speakers read out their names, their addresses and the misdeeds they had been accused. Newspaper photographers snapped their pictures and thousands of residents looked on.

The action appeared to have been aimed at publically humiliating the offenders and use them as an example. Many Chinese were outraged the police would violate the privacy of the offenders in this way and were particularly incensed because the tactics were like those used in the Cultural Revolution. Internet chatter generally sympathized with accused prostitutes and sharply attacked what the police had done. One person quoted in the New York Times wrote: “Even people who commit crimes deserve dignity. Must we go back to the era of the Cultural Revolution.”

One Shanghai lawyer told the Washington Post, “These people were just alleged criminals. It was not yet determined that they had violated the law. The police publically humiliated them, which violates the legal process. This brutal form of punishments has long been abandoned by our society with the development of civilization and a legal system.”

Sex Tourism

Sex tourism is a big business in China. Almost every five-star hotel has a group of women hanging around that offer a variety of services for male travelers. Many hotels, including state-owned ones, employ the prostitutes themselves.

A Japanese restaurant in Kunming, Yunnan Province used to serves sushi and sashimi on the bodies of scantily clothed women Young attractive grills were hired for the job. They reportedly showed up for 30 minutes and had their body chilled in an ice room before lying on a table to have food served on them.

The Japanese businessmen arranged for prostitutes through the hotel’s Japanese marketing department, paying $145 for each woman according to the Beijing Youth Daily. The incident drew more publicity than it otherwise might of because it occurred on the anniversary of the beginning of the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in 1931. The hotel was closed temporarily. Several hotel workers were arrested and forced to take “emergency study sessions.” The Japanese government conducted an investigation.

Foreigners caught hiring prostitutes are usually fined and released.

Chinese Prostitutes Outside China

Large numbers of Chinese women work as prostitutes in Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan and other places in Asia. Many of these women arrive with tourist visas and are brought in with assistance of organized crime gangs.

By some estimates 10,000 mainland Chinese girls and women are brought to Southeast Asia every year to work in the sex industry. In some cases the sex traffickers recruit girls and young women from ethnic minorities in Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces, near the borders of Vietnam, Burma and Laos and smuggle them through the jungles to work at brothels in Southeast Asia.

Some are promised jobs in factories or restaurants and then forced in the sex trade. Some are outright kidnaped. But many go willingly, attracted by an opportunity to make some money and get out of their villages.

One 17-year-old member of the Akha tribe told AP, the traffickers “inspected us like clothes at the marketplace. They asked up us questions like how old we were, were we virgins.” She worked for six years for a pimp in Malaysia before managing to escape.

In some cases they earn more in a day of working the streets in Hong Kong than they can working at legitimate jobs in China for a year. Shanghai and Beijing are far safer than Southern Guangdong, for instance. Also I believe 'Phil' speaks good mandarin. In Moscow, a driver once took me to a desolate area instead of my hotel. I've actually employed the same method on numerous occasions. Arriving in some Chinese city by train and going with some people who hang around the railway station offering cheap hotel rooms. That way you get a cheap room (100-150 RMB a night is normal) and a free ride there without bothering to book a room in advance. So far nothing has happened. I don't really consider it so dangerous, because if these people started robbing and murdering tourists arriving by rail in major cities the police would probably crack down hard on them, I guess there must be cameras all around the major railway stations in China.

I have also used the same method looking for girls without major problems, the only time something negative happened was in Hainan way back in 2002, when I basically stumbled dead-drunk in the middle of the night out of a disco in Haikou and asked one of the motorbike taxi drivers to bring me to some place with girls. Truth is, GZ is no longer a good destination for mongering. Gov't crackdowns have mainly closed alot of the old venues and not too many new ones have opened up.

Yes, what you describe is BBS. If they have the pink lights, it is a very good sign that FS is available.

Just walk in and ask what service is available and the price. Sometimes, I pull the mamasan or papasan aside and ask discreetly. FS prices range from around 100-200RMB for one pop. Some in Shanghai charge a laowai surcharge of another 100 RMB. If they quote you any more than that, they are trying to rip you off. Sometimes you can do them upstairs or in the back, sometimes an apartment nearby or take them back to your hotel.

If you start a massage, it would be difficult to get out with out paying for that. This only applies if you want to try a massage to see what else might be availalble because you are not certain. If the management is evasive about FS, then you probably will not get any but it is usually only 30-50 RMB per hour for the massage. If the girl asks for crazy prices for extras, just do not agree. And, if they don't tell you a price, ask for it before you accept the service. Just pretend you are not that keen and she will reduce the price. If it does not meet your budget, just politely refuse.

If you do not get upset and cause a scene, you can walk out without any argument.

I visit Guangzhou with friends at least once a year (not for Canton Fair) and know that Guangzhou is rather hard for mongering. We usually visit TANG and take freebies (paid of course) to the hotel. Though I have not met any girls in China who told me their husbands know they do this work, I have met country girls in the city whose families back home know and approve. In New Zealand, prostitution is legal and this has meant reasonable prices, better control of STDs, and allows the tax man to get his cut, which is fair I think. Standard FS price for Shanghai is 150. It's been 150 for ages. Good customer discount might drop that to 130. Which isn't to say you won't get action for 100 but that is hardly the normal case. Usually you'll be WAY out someplace a laowai, let alone a mongering one, stands out like a turban in The Vatican. Or you'll be enjoying the company of a woman old enough to be the mother of the type you'd rather hire.

The central rail station hasn't been a place to find action since 2010 or so. Years ago there used to be loads of working girl-huts in the urban core. There might still be lone holdouts inside the inner ring but I wouldn't count on it. These days you'll need to get out past the 2nd ring before you start seeing clusters of them. Over the years all the ones in my neighborhood that closed down were shuttered due to rising property costs or general development and not due to direct police action. There comes a point where general overhead means you can't get away with charging 150. And you want to charge much more than 200 per punter you start getting into the mini-sauna* price range, where you get a private room with a shower for only a bit more than a "high end" whack shack (they do exist!).

There was a proper map done by a guy who spent nearly 2 years covering pretty much ALL of Shanghai with a hand-held GPS mapper trying get a definitive BBS count, from Jinshan to Jiading, from the Pacific to the border with Jiangsu. Someone posted a partial list of his work a few years back. I've seen the complete map but never had access to the raw data behind it.

Anyhow- long story short you can still find minibrothels in Shanghai. But you want affordable sex? Look for places with cheap storefront space. That is going to exclude anywhere that doesn't require a taxi to reach / or is a good walk from any metro station these days. The northeastern corner of Shui Qing road and Li'an road, just west of the S20 is an example. The closest I've been there is in my car while stopped at the intersection, perhaps another member can make the drive out there to report on the service and pricing.

*Mini-sauna = establishment without the fishbowl. Just a hallway lineup, small collection of decently decorated rooms with private showers, expect to pay 300-400.

I think as a run of the mill ESL teacher, your salary drops tremendously after you leave the top cities. And it's these top cities (Shanghai, Beijing, and maybe Guangzhou / Shenzhen) that have the best salaries. I know people who make 4000 / month in this shitty schools. Also, the words "International school" are thrown around a lot. If you want to teach at a true international school, (like shanghai american school) you need to be a teacher in your home country first, with good credentials, often a master's degree. The salary and benefits will be incredible, and it's a great career. However there are lots of other "international" shitholes that aren't worth your time.

Furthermore, what you describe (being adored as a foreigner, just because you're white) is becoming less and less common in China. These women are onto us, they realize we're not super rich (if they're gold diggers) , and we have a reputation of sleeping around and not staying for long (for the honest, loving ones) so it's not as easy as shooting fish in a barrel. I hate to put it this way, but the smaller the city, perhaps the more naive the girl (not always true, but often). But the smaller the city, the less the pay.

I think the myth of asian women is that they want to fuck. More of them want to love, and that's a problem for you. There are very few girls in China who go out just to meet a hot guy, and don't care too much if he calls or not. They're always looking for something serious.

Also, you're 100kg? Are you muscular, fat? Can you easily pick up women back home based solely on your looks? If so, then I think you can do quite well in China (maybe even better in Japan / Korea). Without the "attractive" edge, it's more difficult.

imho, the bbs scene in china has been on the decline for several years. in s. china, where i am most familiar, economic development has forced the bbs out of business or to move upscale and / or off street level. many bbs girls, if they can drink, have moved up to ktv, and, if they can do multiple punters every day, to the saunas, where the money is better. and, the locals want the eyesores off the streets in newly re-developed residential areas.

i am also a big fan of the "farm fresh" variety but they are becoming harder and harder to find nowadays."factory fresh" is a bit easier. i used to have a bunch of mommies that would call me when new recruits hit the market, but i rarely get a call lately and most of their bbs are shut.

i often reminisce about the "good old days"; candyland and sha tsui in sz, ramada shops and other areas in guangzhou, the 1, 000 girl street in huadu, yalan area in cp,"the village" in sh, and the bbs strip malls in all the smaller towns in china. they are all gone with the exception of yalan where some bbs still remain, albeit with far less selection then in the "day". that said, you can still find a bbs, here and there, rep001tered across towns, but there is no concentration like in the past.

i was in cq last month. there used to be bbs everywhere, however, i did not see any pink lights driving around town. i did not check everywhere but based on the development i saw there, i assume the same scenario has occurred.

i also believe that the local punters, the major source of bbs revenue in the past, has moved upscale, as well. many can now well afford the more expensive options for mongering in china and do so as a matter of face.

although you can still get laid for 50-150 rmb in some locations if you look hard enough, i am afraid that china is no longer a "cheap sex" mongering destination.

Some BBS pockets still exist in Shanghai, but they are mostly in very local neighborhoods. In Pudong, there is a a strip on NingYang Lu near TangQiao Lu off of PuDong Nan Lu and PuJian Lu. This is not far from the Pudong Sheraton / 4 Points.

Another strip is on YingHua Lu between Haitong Lu and BaiYang Lu. This strip now calls themselves Massage places, but still BBS's.

I reckon CP is still your best bet for the highest concentration of BBS girls in relatively close proximity and you can always call the mommies to send you girls or book them in advance when you visit the BBS. I also like to do multiple girls in a day and, IMHO, this is the best place for that. Some of the other smaller towns in Guangdong, Jiangmen for example, have some areas of cheap saunas at around 200-300 per session, but they have limited amount of girls and they bring them in 1-2 at a time. You can turn them down until you find one you like but it is a waste of time.

I will be in Shenzhen then Guangzhou towards the end of March. I usually stay in the Huaqiangbei area as this is where I have to go for my work. This is a small town about 3 hours away from the provincial capital.

One of these places is on Shaoshan West Road. Another is right by the bus station. Another still was by the train station.

If I may add, it is very important to negotiate hard with an in-room hotel girl. They always start with some crazy price. Don't be afraid to offer a crazy low price. You should note that they make very, very little, if anything at all, if you don't go for the extra service. If you just pretend that you only want the massage, and they believe you, it helps. I heard the average comp at American School Guangzhou is around $55k / year but the lesser known schools pay far less. That said, most say Japan / Taiwan are better. There has been little or no action available in Changping since the last crackdown a few years ago. You can sometimes find some straggling mommies on the street that will send girls to your hotel room; one at a time. Other than that, some KTV do have limited stock of talent if they know you; no lineups, just show you some pictures. WeChat is always an option but you never know what you are getting on there.

I suggest you might have better luck in Shenzhen. There is still some sauna action and mommies on the street in Luohu. KTV is available but very expensive. YMMV. Happy Hunting!

Therefore you should have no trouble negotiating your bribe with the Shenzhen police during the current crackdown. You need to read Ace Gallant's recent post on the SZ forum. In fact I am totally amazed that you have not read the Dongguan, Shenzhen, Danshui / Huizhou, Zhuhai forums to update yourself prior to your visit.

Still plenty of action in Shenzhen if you want to be adventurous and risk the current GA gauntlet. One KTV for example is the 人间都汇 (rénjiān dōuhuì) KTV in Bao'an (very close to the City Comfort Inn. Prices start at 600/1500/2000. Not much dearer than Danshui / Huizhou (but still expensive. Lots of good old fashioned KTVs in Bao'an and Longgang districts, but they are not in hotels.

Saunas that offer environmental protection (环保 huán bǎo) are now commonplace in SZ, particularly in Futian and Louhu districts as well as the outer districts previously mentioned. Very few offer full service. Ask the doorman or concierge at your hotel.

Cheapest action is in places like Shaxia and the villages west of ShaTsui. Just don't go alone and be sensible. There are KTVs, Saunas and even some apartment brothels.

One final suggestion! Why don't you ask your Tijuana correspondent Captain Solo (aka One Wing Low). He is an acknowledged South China expert recognised by all the old China hands (ha ha).

It's a very old experience, don't know if it's still available.

In lishui I had some of the cheapest quickie in China, but it was around 4-5 years ago. Near the train station of lishui, there are (maybe were, didn't visit lishui recently) some blocks of old apartment complex, just walk around and you will be approached by a bunch of mama-san, or walk up to a 40-50 yo lady standing in the middle of the road doing nothing, and ask her if there are any service offered, the price asked was 40 yuan / pop in one of the apartment or 100 yuan to take her back to your hotel room, if it's near, for 2 pops (I'm not sure about this part, never took a girl back, and it was a lot of time ago), the girls were all very young, almost no one above 25 years old (at least no one I had the pleasure to meet, the oldest was just 22 yo) and the majority around 18-20 years old (I always asked to check the ID, because some girls seemed to be even [CodeWord902] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord902), and if they didn't show me, I would ask the mama-san to change girl), chatted with a very pretty and petite 18 yo once, and she told me that she ran away from home, and was spending almost all-day in the internet cafes near there (almost like all the other girls there).

Even just in 2015/16 in Suzhou, you could walk down the little bbs street with 5 dwellings in operation on a Sunday afternoon at 1 pm and find a handful of 8's in their 20's /30's for 150 rmb with great service. I used to live in Guangzhou. Every message parlor, spa, sauna place I ever went to would give me a long spiel about their menu and services, but basically what it always came down to was they were asking for a lot of money for not full service (some were asking exorbitant amounts - 3000 yuan. For what essentially amounted to roleplay massages and where they wanted to be paid upfront--Fuck that). They would eventually say full service is not allowed in the city, so basically everything was pushed underground which made everything more expensive because there's more middlemen. I never went to Kama when I was there. Otherwise most night clubs or hotel bars or even some regular bars would have some working girls there looking for customers. Generally speaking, foreign students from Africa who worked part time were the best value because there weren't so many agents involved, and Chinese women generally wanted extra for servicing foreigners. Wuhan: like my first night there, I had Tantan matches telling me to go to their sauna or massage parlor or hotel. Lots of places that offer you good service in a nice environment at a bargain price, and like the high end service with really hot girls there is comparable to the price you would pay for shitty service in Guangzhou or Beijing. The thing is I would not know how to explain how to find these places other than just add every Tantan or Tinder account that has their WeChat info in their public profile, which is what I did when I lived there. For example, one of their profile pics would be a QR code, or a picture of a WeChat profile page that has a searchable WeChat ID. Sometimes in the public Tantan profile is a phone number in hanzi characters, or sometimes in older more obscure hanzi characters that are homophones for the numbers. I just added everyone this way, and found all these agents telling me there's working girls at this hotel or that sauna or behind a hidden door in a KTV. Like a lot of these wanted you to buy boner pills or sex videos, or to use their delivery service to send someone over (I have only once gotten good service when it's door service, so I try to avoid those: they're always in a hurry to leave before they even got there, and they always have one hand on their phone) or their shitty overpriced massage service that is not full service (and is a terrible massage but is in a nice place with lots of sexy women in the same uniform and you think "there's going to be sex" but there is not going to be sex: in my experience, these places either want you to pay upfront, or they want you to wear some little shorts instead of being naked, or both, (parlors you pay after the service, working girls you pay before, and unless there's a long walk between the showers and your room, in which case they will give you a locker to put your things in, and a towel, slippers, shorts, and tie-able shirt to wear during the walk to and back, they shouldn't be given you just shorts, especially if there's a shower in the room)) but most of them were trying get customers for full service places. There was one KTV I went to often where there was back door that led you to stairs and a security door, then a waiting room, then another security door. On the other side was a line up of hot Chinese girls. Pick one, who leads you to a room with a bathroom (where she bathes you) and a bedroom with a bed and usually other sex furniture like ceiling ropes or those sex cushion things.

Harbin: I lived there a couple of years. Everything was out in the open, there were a few parts of town were there would lots of rows of storefront massage shops on the first floor with pink lights outside of various buildings, and invariably there would be police stations somewhere in the middle of said blocks. And these were regular apartment buildings with families living in the other apartments, renting or owning in a red light district and just ignoring what was going on on the first floor. The migrant worker bit of the economy may never recover from Covid. A lot of service industry people, including ayis and others who worked for foreigners, are simply not returning. They are of course people too and have human needs. Also, we may or may not see them the way they are seen by others in the society, meaning that foreigners may treat them better and not see them as being on the lower rungs of the labor ladder. Then again we're only really talking about sex here, recreational or otherwise.

I had a similar experience with a service apartment some time ago. There was a massage service in the basement, and they made it clear that everything was available. Even though enforcement has not let up since 2014, the mamasan and papasan still have to make a living. Life has go on, just that the business is now more discreet.

Gone are the days where the business was conducted in public and blends into the community. Now the girls work out of hotel rooms in hearby hotels such as 7 Days. Mamasan and Papasan are on the streets around the old establishments scouting for customers; and once a connection is made, the mamasan or papason will tell you where to go.

I recognize all the mamasans and papasans in my village because I was their their customers for many years. I know them so well, a couple of years I even had the year-end feast with them and the girls who did not to go home for the new year. So how would a stranger like you spot who are the mamasans and the papasans? This is more of an art than a science.

You can go starting afternoon till late night, but best time might be around 7 pm just after dinner. You should be looking for middle aged men or women standing on the street for no apparent reason, or slowly strolling the street. But they are not completely unware of the surrounding; just the opposite they will be constantly looking left and right at the passing people, trying to spot potential customers. I think they will know what you are up to when they see you. They do this for a living. Many of them carry a shoulder strap purse.

You should try to stroll slowly on the street, and make casual contact with people fitting the above description. How do I describe this eye contact. Perhaps like when you look at someone you might have known from before but are not sure. In another word, a little more eye contact than completely random and incidental. Better yet, turn your head and make the eye contact. A mamasan or papasan likely will approach you at that point.

I am not in SZ now, but every couple years I go back, they are there. Life has to go on.

This new model is not as enjoyable as before, where everything was completely public. You cannot really see and choose the girl because there is only one in the room (mamasan / papasan do ask you what type of girl you like so they decide for you). It is just not as carefree an experience. But if you have nothing else, this works.

I was in Shenzhen a few times last year, and I RTFF, I did my own exploring, and I asked around, but I could find nothing. The super frustrating part is that I saw very hot outcall WGs coming into my hotel every night. One was waiting for her John at the elevator and I was just about to tell her to come to my room instead, but I chickened out. I have seen the mamasans around the Panglin / Sunshine Hotel and have been offered girls from them and WeChat is full of P4 P action but they are asking 1,000 RMB and will settle for 400-600ST if you bargain. I did not get any offers around the Shangri-La like it used to be.

Many of the massage / sauna places in Luohu are offering HJ or BJ for around 300-400 RMB.

I will try some of the other areas you suggest when I am next in SZ but for now they are keeping me out of China for political reasons.

Sometimes, it is semi-obvious, and other times you will need to "scratch the surface".

My strong recommendation: you should only start exploring if you know Mandarin (or if in the "deep south", Cantonese).

In some instances, it might be useful to use WECHAT, QQ etc.

Beware of scams, and possible danger.

My best results came in second tier cities, walking about, and keeping my ears and eyes open.

I am 80+ and before Covid went to China 4 or 5 times per year, always to a Tier 2/3 city. Note that I have "friends" I call to visit me and stay overnight or ST now, but trips to China are getting more expensive and more difficult. For other entertainment I enjoy the KTV's where you pick your choice or choices for the night but spend time playing games, drinking, dancing, getting to know your choice for the night. Can sometimes be hit and miss, but thankfully has been more hit than miss. Many of the hotter KTV's are shut down but many are still open but on the down low. What I can tell you is the prices for "entertainment have really gone up. My LT friends are from 2000 to 3000 RMB. For a high end KTV with what they call models the price can go to 5000 RMB.

All that said. How I miss the good old days in ChangPing and ChangAn. Anyone who experienced those days will never forget it. Hundreds of girls to choose from and reasonable prices. Crazy fun!
