Reason: This is a Bareback Bill alias.

the freedom of speech protections in the us constitution protects a citizen's right to speak out against the government on any other subject that they may choose to espouse upon. however, it has no effect over private individuals, and it does not compel other citizens to publish whatever they wish to say.
in other words, you can send all the letters you want to the new york times, but they are under no obligation to publish any of them.

This idiot points out that the factual scenario causing liablility for slander is "our emails back and forth".

it's obvious that i should have banned him long ago, but he continued to manage to operate just under the wire with several multi-month periods of reasonable posts, and then with uncanny accuracy he would start posting his brand of bs after i had taken my eye off of him.

Banning a member after their second questionable report seems reasonable to me. I can understand someone not being quite sure of the boundaries the first time around. But after that, the kindest thing that you can say is that he is a slow learner. Life is too short to be subjected to a lot of the stuff that Jackson has to put up with.
I don't know about you Npaul1, but I appreciate that Jackson wants our input on what is a fairly major decision. You are right in that it is Jackson's site. He will make the final decision after giving it careful thought.

Standard Capitalization Again, we all went to elementary school, and we all know that you should capitalize the first letter of sentences, names of people, places, streets, cities, countries, names of races and religions, etc.
Actually, Capitalization Of The First Letter Of Each Word (like this guys) is appropriate in the German language, and Jackson always reacts negatively to this, because he has to go back and lower case the first letter of their words.

I fully agree, provided that, for the first questionable report, a signal is sent to let the member to let him know he went wrong (e.g. by deleting the report with a warning).
Concerning The Artist comments on what is accomplished with banning a member, he obvioulsy missed a few points:
- It tells the other members what is not acceptable on this forum
- If the serial antagonist re-registers, it's not an issue. Either he learned his lesson and follows the rules from now on, in which case it's no longer a problem, or he doesn't, in which case he will be banned again (thanks The Artist for giving one more reason not to wait too long and ban him fast).

The member who is involved in this, who maybe thinks he has "won" this battle, his crusade, yes this member wrote and still is writing in a provocative way. Because he is able to write in this way, he knows what he is writing and so also knows in what his style of writting can result.
The banned member lost control, fellt into the trap, an intentional trap.

The bottom line: Don't threaten any member with violence either in a posted report or in a PM.

Surfer's report is a perfect example of a post that is purely argumentative and adds NOTHING to the forum except to foster similar arguments. I've exchanged numerous emails with Surfer about his behavior over the past couple of years, and every time he's responded with long winded answers that generally amount to "I'm right and everybody else is wrong and they're just picking on me..."
A couple of weeks ago he agreed, as a condition to keeping his membership in good standing, that he would no longer address other forum members and would limit his posts to providing relevant information. Of course, it was all BS.
I keep telling myself that serial antagonists NEVER change their ways, but then I continue to let serial antagonists like Surfer and Vince Voyeur and others talk their way back into the site, only to be forced to eventually ban them again.
Rule #1: "Serial Antagonists NEVER change their ways!"
Anyway, Surfer is now on permanent moderated status. Everything that he posts will be reviewed by me before it's visible in the forum, and anything that isn't actually providing real, useful information will be deleted. Of course Surfer has already emailed me to advise me that he will no longer participate in the forum under these restrictions and essentially gave me his resignation, but I know better. Remember Rule #1.
Besides, if a Forum Member isn't going to provide real, useful information, then who cares if he posts or not?

On the Colombia thread specifically, there are at least 2-3 other members that contribute absolutely nothing, and in fact actually detract from the purpose of the forum, and make the Colombia section a chore to read. I'm not going to name names, but certain members who go off on right-wing rants probably should be confined to the Politics section of the ISG, and not be allowed to post anywhere else. Also, members who have never been to a country, but post stupid one-liners multiple times a day also should probably be put on moderated status. I'm sure regular readers of the Colombia thread will know who I'm talking about!
What's funny is that out of the 2-3 pain-in-ass posters I speak of, Surfer actually contributed the MOST information, and was the most well-traveled of the group.

My experience dealing with him prove me exactly the opposite, that he is one of the most miserable individuals I ever met at this forum.
I met him on 2004, at the Buenos Aires Mansion. As many visitors to BA, he wanted to know about the local scene and I gladly answered the questions he had. Also, I gave him a lift to BA Microcentro after the dinner.
On July-August 2006, I traveled to Colombia, as you can confirm reading the Cali and Cartagena sections. He answered one of my first posts in Cali, so I contacted him for advice and girls' phone numbers.
Not only he didn't correspond, but also he posted during my stay in Colombia photos of chicas he knew. A way to say "I can correspond but I won't".

Then he completely ignored the reporting function and emailed a "list" of reports by number so I could go find them myself. I again asked him to use the reporting function, and he emailed back in capital letters accusing me of not wanting to do my job, etc.
Additionally, a review of his posting history indicated that approximately 10% of his posts were of any value (mostly single photos), the remaining 90% being comprised of criticisms, snide comments, veiled threats, antagonistic attacks, Admin-deleted reports, off-topic rants, etc. I kept the photos, but the rest has been flushed.
His emails were nothing less than belligerent and obnoxious, and only got worse with each exchange, intimately revealing what a truly unreasonable person he was, and certainly not the caliber of individual I want participating in this forum.

The answer is: I haven't banned VV because I don't know with any level of certainty that he is posting "fake information about places where he has never been".
In other words, I can't disprove a negative, and neither can you.
If he was posting about Latin America, an area in which I would be well qualified to ascertain the validity if his reporting, and I knew that his reports were inaccurate, then I would be justified in taking action.
But he's not posting about Latin America, he's posting about Eastern Europe, and the only "evidence" I have that his posts are fabricated is an occasional complaint to the effect that "VV has never been to XYZ". Additionally, I have never received a complaint asserting that one of his reports are inaccurate.
My suggestion to all VV detractors:
A. Add him to your "Ignore" list and you'll never see his posts again.
or...
B. Send me links to three VV reports that contain gross inaccuracies that are concretely verifiable, and I'll delete everything he's ever posted and terminate his membership. By "gross inaccuracies" I mean things like posting an address that doesn't exist, or stating that he went to a certain "business establishment" and had a blond chick, and the website of said establishment clearly states that they offer only brunettes. etc.

After receiving several complaints over the past year, I reviewed Aganguly80's posting history.
In three years he has posted 56 "reports", all of which are criticisms about other forum members, and not one of them providing any actionable information.
Apparently he was one of the older members who were grandfathered into Senior Member status three years ago, and thus his BS was never subject to review. Eventually, I will eliminate all of these unqualified members.
