i posted this just before summer, and before i went to nairobi for 3 weeks. it includes contact info for the terminal hotel.

here is a little update on it (updates after the *symbol)
this is a list of things in nairobi that i have found interesting. things to try and places to go. most of the info are plain and simply cut from various sites on the internet, including isg.
the list is a little chaotic, but there is plenty of good advice.
most are non-mongering facts, as the mongering business are well covered on these pages.
hope there is something useful for all of you going there.

hotels
- kenya comfort suites
(not the hotel) is good. very clean, spacious and safe. 3600 shillings or about $60 for a single. add 600 more for a double. no worries with your gf. and the food is great and very reasonably priced.
* stayed there, was a very good deal. kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom for about 3500 (double). even has a working hot tub by the pool!
- ngong hills hotel could be an interesting altenative to fairview hotel. website looks nice and prices much lower than fairview hotel. ngong hills is aight. significantly lower in class than fairview so don't moan if you find that its not up to fairview standards. however it is common with old married men and their 'ndogo ndogos' (kenyan slang for mistress) so i'm guessing you'll fit in very well with the crowd
- i have found two very nice apartment hotels in nairobi, take a look on www.palacina.com and www.naturaloak.co.ke
- the hotel is called seldom hotel and its on muranga road. there are also a couple of decent hotels on muranga road. other hotels below:

- well, about appartments in westlands i suggest rhaptha road. its close to the action and there are many nice appartments for a good price.
just check liza apartments, prime apartments, glory residence apartmens, white pearls apartments. i stayed in prime apartments and glory residence apartments. they were goin for 500-600 usd per month (1 year ago).
they are both girlfriendly. at least i never experienced an problems when bringin a girl.
i am sure in the other apartments there is no problem bringin back girls too but i don't know about the prices. i guess they are 700++ usd.
restaurants, bars and clubs
- for breakfast, next to the terminal hotel is the dove cage restaurant. recommended, you get yourself the number 4 (sausage, bacon, egg, two toast and a pot of tea) 210kes
* this is no longer in action. they have made a hotel out of it, don't know if it has opened at time of writing.
- gypses is located near the sarit center, just off of uhuru road, the casino and across from barclays.
* really good place to find upscale girls. great atmosphere too. lot's of muzungus.
- this pub is the ideal place to start out your evening, annie oakley's appears to be a very relaxed, laid back atmosphere, here you have numerous choices of girls annie oakleys(behind hotel salamu, heron court) cost of taxi return from central nairobi, annie oakleys
the bar man said that things get only going after 6. 30 or so.
- "klub sound" near simmers: similar crowd to choices and the dance floor is centrally located so it’s easier to pick out the fishes gyrating on the dance floor.
* didn't try it, but walked past. 50 meters from hooters. and maybe 100 meters from simmers. simmers has a great atmosphere btw.
-"bananas" on thika road. this place is jammed packed with the united states international university (usiu) crowd on friday and saturdays.
- tropez" in the town center: working class crowd. very hot chics, but be prepared to buy ‘expensive’ drinks.
* good bar.
- "choices bar" on baricho road near the nyayo stadium round-about; this place has plenty of the working class ‘in-crowd’ and also the upper class poseurs. the place is always jam-packed especially on fridays and saturdays
- dinner at kengele`s pub & restaurant in koinange st - nothing to write home about, soup, fish burger and salads, also like my ice cream, chocolate! all for just short of 800kes. incidentally a beer (tusker, castle, windhoek lager) averages out at 130kes, cheap i say
* tried the food here. loved it. sitting there eating for an hour you will most likely see western men meeting their beautiful dates.
- i spent both my wednesday evenings at carnivore and thoroughly enjoyed myself
* but things at the disco rarely gets going until late. wednesday the preferred day i think.
- on the k1 versus florida question, i have been to k1 and the madhouse, but neither of the either. k1 has pool tables and lots of little cubby hole areas. its generally more intimate and relaxed. madhouse is a like a football pitch and you have to shout to be heard, especially later in the night. in madhouse you will get the more professional type. some are very nice looking. if you want a wide choice and to leave after 15 minutes with someone then madhouse is the place. k1, on the other hand is more of a pub than a club, but very nice and plenty of distractions should you get unwanted attention. on a good night in nairobi i'd plan for either k1 or the pavement first and see how you go. i agree with your freinds opinion. if nothing of interest then head off to madhouse for last orders. just mind how drunk they've got before then!
- the pavement. we'd call it a gastro-pub here in the uk. does good food but you can also watch sports on tv and get hammered on tuskers. plenty of jungus and expats of all sorts. the women here. of all sorts. do regard themselves as higher class
- if you like african music try club afrique next to the national museum on museum hill just about 5 minutes from the town center. very nice looking place with a lot of pretty "real" girls, but here you have to dance that's why a lot of them come here. next door is another pretty place called galileo, which is more for the yuppies of nairobi. but it also attracts a lot of the young chicks.
- madhouse: daily entertainment
tuesdays - techo night with djs suleiman, dennis & shidra
wednesdays - reggae night with d'ohty intertainment
thursdays - soul night with djs suleiman, dennis & shidra
fridays - ol skool night
saturdays - party night

attitude restaurant
* madhouse is just that - mad. it's great fun, even if your not looking for a lay (which you will find if you want) but some tired prostitutes there too.
- the latest addition to the florida family, attitude! is a restaurant and pub of distinction located in the heart of nairobi. with its airy décor, friendly staff and superb food, there’s no doubt it’s tops for lunch and early evening drinks.
- kengeles offers very descent food too, good english kind of breakfasts and equally good grilled meat or fish dishes. the breakfast cost 200-300 kes, while lunch or dinner up to 600 kes. *
- along the street leading to the hilton there are 3 upstairs bars called taco’s, sizzles and taco bell’s (nothing to do with the american company). university students often go there to pick up a few extra bucks as they do at the carnivores disco restaurant but at carnivores, everything is expensive and at the 3 bars mentioned, entry is free and drinks are cheap.
- thorn tree café, kimathi street
serves a good mix of food, especially a big breakfast
- porterhouse restaurant, mama ngina street
excellent place for steaks
* loved it. good price, a little hard to find. close to the hilton.
- horseman, langata road
three restaurants in one—one serves game meat, the second pizzas, and the third chinese, kenyan, and indian food
- kahawa, kaunda street
great for breakfast
- zanze bar, moi avenue
friendly bar with pool tables, dance floor, and cheap beer
* good place, also for watching english premier league.
- taco bell, moi avenue
popular bar that overlooks the street
- hornbill pub, tom mboya street
large, dark, but friendly bar
- soho’s, parklands road
lively, popular bar that pulls smart crowd
- club soundd, kaunda street
central night spot
- diners at the nyama choma restaurant, safari park hotel
the hotel is beautiful. they have seven (i think) restaurants on site. i ate at the african restaurant. they have a 5 course meal for 1500 shillings. the main course is nyama choma, which is basically grilled meat. the concept is a bit like a brazillian steak house. waiters come round with unlimited skewers of meat. they had sausages, pork, beef, lamb, crocodile, alligator, chicken... et
- rangers: the best grilled meat in whole of kenya, the national park of nairobi
- blancos lounge:
during my last visit to nairobi in june 2007, i discovered something of a novelty: a true gourmet restaurant based on traditional african food! while the traditional stuff may be delicious and tasty, blancos lounge offers something much more. they offer both the traditional swahili dishes, as well their own inventions based on old local staple food. this place is still firmly within the global fusion cuisine. the day the michelin guide starts rating restaurants in africa, this place will most likely be among the first! when trying out their version of mbuzi choma with irio, i couldn't believe it when i got my irio as giant pommes noisettes on a bed of a sukuma wiki based salad (don't even try to understand what i'm talking about if you're not familiar with kenyan food!). needless to say, i recommend this place. check out their site at www.blancos.co.ke!
- the cellar is not mentioned in any tourist guide. located in lavington, this is a place where mainly affluent locals and well-informed expatriates go. their specialty is steaks, and the place is totally worth many visits.
- the cedar:
if you like lebanese food, it would be a crime not to visit the cedar, on lenana road. this place is owned by a norwegian businessman who does not compromise when it comes to style and quality in his restaurant. their mezze are absolutely mouth-watering! hang around in the bar after dinner, and you're likely to bump into quite a few members of kenya's political and business elite.
- habesha:
ethiopian restaurants are booming in popularity in nairobi.* ethiopian food usually consists of various spicy meat sauces, served with the traditional injera. if you haven't tried it, i can warmly recommend*it, but be aware that it's highly addictive!* habesha in hurlingham is my favorite ethiopian restaurant in nairobi. due to its reputation for excellence, it tends to be crowded though. the motherland along ngong road, and red sea on lenana road are also definitely worth trying.
* my gf took me here. great food, cheap.
- serena hotel:
the lunch buffet at the serena hotel is without any doubt the best one in town, and none of the other hotels offer anything that compares. never, ever eat there without having a taste of the smoked sailfish!
- annie oakley's:next to milimani backpackers, has pool tables, a descent menu, and a big screen with cable tv. another expats favorite hangout
- choices:, majestic house, moi avenue, box 53319,
- java house:
free wireless internet is available at java house restaurants in the city. the internet cafe in sarit centre also has wireless internet available at a good speed and a reasonable price.

- prime cuts, the village market, gigiri:
the most delicious sandwiches and salads in africa! attached to an expansive delicataseen, and butchery, prime cuts bistro offers a wide of selection of sandiwches, salads, steaks, drinks, cheese, and the finest quality meats and seafood. village market
- iguana bar & grill, fuji plaza, westlands
iguana is famous for its mexican*and indian*cuisine. nice bar collection.
every friday*mix of punjabi, african, hip-hop, arabian*and much more*music by dj sweety
every saturday*variety of music by aman behal inconjunction with dj sweety
every sunday indian live music by vicky khan.
big screens for sports are available.
- jikonee, tom mboya street
quick and tasty fast food in the heart of the city.
- chowpaty, diamond plaza parklands.
you could describe this as a combination of indian and chinese dishes.
this would be criminal. much better to see it as somewhere you can get phenomonal and authentic south indian cuisine cheaply in nairobi. fancy masala dosa and freshly squeezed orange, tangerine and carrot juice mix? call a cab.
- hooters, kaunda st.
for american food, i suggest the new hooters on kaunda st. hooters is a sports restaurant/bar, with several tvs playing vh1 or soccer games. the service is maybe the best in town, although meals are a bit expensive, from ksh 250 to 400 per person. meals range from sandwiches, hamburgers, and pizza to excellent milk shakes, a rarity in kenya.
* didn't have ice or milk shake when i was there.
- pasara café, by trattoria: about the only place to get a good sandwich in nairobi is pasara café on kaunda, just down from trattoria. there are a variety of sandwiches in several sizes, and an excellent salad bar. plan on spending from ksh 150-300 to get full.
- milimani backpackers & safari centre is the ideal location for a traveller to rest and refresh. one can hook up with fellow backpackers for a safari, take up water rafting, mountain climbing or bird watching
club barn, ngong racecourse.
- the clubarn:
the much acclaimed scicoustic band from south africa pefromed at clubarn on 5th july, during the polo day dinner. also in performance was johnny clegg, a rock maestro from uk.
the clubarn is located off ngong road inside the ngong racecourse, nairobi (kenya). it was opened eight years after the barn (a famous night club) was closed. today known as the clubarn , it rests on the same concept but recently renovated to blend in with modern times.
the clubarn is partitioned into different areas to suit the clubs needs. they include:
a main disco bar with perimeter fully equipped with a dance floor, d.j booth, lower level sitting area, upper foyer and a pool table area; all suited to accommodate an average number.
the new clubarn lounge the is a new lounge with its own bar area totally secluded from the main disco area where you can chat away with your friends while drinking your favorite liquor or cocktails. *
bonfire patio at the entrance: here, a bonfire is lit every night with chairs placed around it for an aesthetic and warm effect where customers can interact freely under the stars.
kitchen lobby: this extends from the bonfire veranda with trees overlooking the area. with a fully equipped kitchen, customers are served directly and with ease.
grills are also strategically placed around the lobby for nyama choma and other grilled specialties.
the outdoor bar : the bar & grill has this unique feature strategically placed to serve those outside.
stage & performance area: the stage can hold 15 performers and the area around the stagen is *enough to hold a capacity of 500 pax, high enough for better viewing.
- pavement: a cafe runs during all opening hours - however the main attraction is their lively nightclub. there's a dancefloor on bottom level. 2 bars inside lounge upstairs one bar outside w/a sportsbar atmosphere.* entrance on friday and saturday nights is*500/= per person. it is a very good club that offers a wide range of music depending on the type of people that are there and also depending on the event taking place on that particular night.
- havana restaurant and bar, westlands woodwale grove:
salsa, mixed with zouk, africando, afro-fusion and brazilian is the main theme of the music selection.
some of nairobi popular salsa bands occasionally perform at havana, check with the bar for dates.
havana screens the live matches of the fa premier league and major international football fixtures on the flat screens in the bar area.
havatronics on thursdays: newest electronic funky beats, every thursday
- simba salon:
adjoining the main restaurant (*carnivore) is the simba saloon - a vibrant informal restaurant that incorporates a childrens playground (very popular at weekends) and a lively nightclub.*
the simba saloon serving pizzas (from a traditional, domed, brick oven), an extremely popular salad bar at lunchtime, steaks, hamburgers, scampi, trout, chicken, and other light snacks, provides an alternative to those who do not want to indulge in a large meal.
the night club operates from wednesday to sunday and has themed nights to cater for fans of contemporary african music, rock, soul, jazz, old skool, and the latest hits.
the simba saloon is well known for hosting some of africas best musicians as well as many international ones such as maxi priest, yellowman, sadao watanabe, manu dibango, salif keta, chaka demus and pliers, ismael lo,* and habib koite just to mention a few.

* - black diamond: great place, big balcony with dancefloor. lot's of nice chicks and expats too. the club next door is "interesting", mostly for the young kenyans.
general things
- travelling east africa
good tip: go midweek, or else you will rub shoulder to shoulder with the masses. this way you can perhaps throw in a trip to kampala, uganda. just a suggestion.
- for "best" cybercafe, i was recommended to, and also recommend avant-garde, standard st., attached to fedha towers. they did not have wifi in 2006 but you could connect to their local network using your own laptop. also the browsing price was reasonable at 1.5ksh. very friendly and helpful staff, nice decor, not too big, nice computers, a/c!
for all those who'd rather rent an appartment, i enclose pics of a few billboards, all in the vicinity of nakumatt nyali.
* i used the one in the nakumatt centre downtown. by the terminal hotel. good place, could eat food and hook up your laptop in a private place
- to dial a mba landline, press +254 41, drop the first 0, then press the last 7 or 6 digits.
to dial a # beginning with 020, press +254. 20 and so on.
to dial a kenya cell # beginning with 0713 upto 0736, you press +254, drop the first 0 and input the remaining 9 numbers.
- hope the other random pics get you into the mood to visit as well.
my point is no need for dating sites. just come here, be brave and do the following:
1) smile at a girl (any girl),
2) say hi, tell them you really like them,
3) tell them they have a beautiful bottox (bottox = ass and all ghanaian girls love to hear they have a beautiful ass - don't worry they won't be offended),
4) get their phone number,

once leaving the customs area of the airport, (jomo kenyatta international airport,) the “large round venture hut is right in front of you.*
venture offer a well priced, safe and friendly return airport/motel transfers, as well as arranging several day trips to all of nairobi's major sights and attractions. a typical day trip that takes in the giraffe centre and the david sheldrick wildlife trust will cost approx us$30 for up to 4 people.....bargain!

- i never had any problems with the quality of medical care in nairobi. the best hospitals there are the nairobi hospital (on argwings kodhek rd; tel. 2722160, 2714400) and aga khan hospital (3rd parklands avenue; tel. 740000, 742531) and they both have an emergency reception.*

- college students/ working class: if you have time to spare in nairobi, then why not have a short term gf? rather than pay for the shag overtly, you will pay covertly through buying dinners, perfume and plenty of drinks. you may not get shag on the first night but i can guarantee you that most kenyan women dream of having a white man. you will be a trophy to be shown around the clique of girlfriends but who cares, as longs as the load in your balls in lightened right? in this is your style, the hang around the various kengeles joints, club sound, club bananas (plenty of united states international university mamas here ready to exchange a glass of baileys for a shag), ibiza and tacos.

remarks: the intercontinental casino is one of the best casinos in nairobi. they have six roulette tables, most of them busy but not too crowded. the lowest minimums and highest maximums in nairobi. the service is great, an excellent buffet and a huge bar.
cimema:
if you want to catch a movie, you have a couple of good choices in nairobi.* 20th on mama ngina street is located in the cbd, and if you stay in one of the major city hotels, you can walk over there safely, even at night. the sarit centre in the westlands and the nu metro in the village market also have some very nice movie theatres.
* go to the ones outside city centre. nakumatt junction is great. take your girl, she will like that.
shopping:
shopping in nairobi can be quite fun, as prices are way below what europeans are used to.* due to the strong economic growth, the number of large, modern malls keeps growing.* the village market is, without a doubt the most fun place to go. constructed like a giant village, it a has a really cool architecture, with an articificial river running through the place. in addition to a bunch of clothes shops with all the major designer labels (at prices way below european level), a supermarket and a travel agency, it has a cinema, a night club, about 15 small food places with various international cuisines surrounding an open-air food court, some nice outdoor cafés and an italian ice bar. there's even a small amusement park, so it is basically a place where it's easy to spend quite some time.* alternative good upmarket places to shop are nakumatt ngong road and the sarit centre. http://www.villagemarket-kenya.com/home.php
* go to some of the smaller shops in nairobi in moi av. (i think it was). some great second hand etc
* if you stay long in a place with tv: buy a dvd-player for about 4000 at yakumatt and movies for 200. the dvd players are small and easily move able
- kichuna means handsome.
- go to the norfolk hotel for colonial charm and the beautiful pool!

ps: don't only go to the madhouse and florida. the city has soo much more to offer!! also, you will find semi-pro's or just plain girls which is a lot more desirable imo.
We normally have to stay at the Intercontinental or Serena for security reasons.
If I book a double do I still have to pay for a girl guest? I don't want those extra charges on my expenses!
Nope, if you pay for a double room then there are no additonal costs if a guest stays overnight! However, keep in mind that all visitors must be duly registered at the reception. BTW, it's for me always an unpleasant situation since the hotel staff sees me every single day with different girls! :)

The 'terminal hotel' is at the city center, is safe and is good for ST. It is right opposite nakumat lifestyle (a busy shopping mall) thus is easy to locate.
I have come to like 'Eureka Highrise Hotel' too. It is at the heart of the city, right opposite the main bus stop (called Kencom or Ambassadeur). Eureka is clean, private, safe and has very nice rates.

A few comments on the MP scene in Nairobi. I apologize if any info is outdated. I haven't been in Nairobi much the past year.
1. Viola's, Wood Ave, near Yaya Centre. Seedy joint with 3-4 girls available (5-7). Quick decent massage 1000 plus negotiable extras priced roughly as follows: HJ (1000), CBJ (2000), FS (3000). There's a couple other massage places in the same strip which I haven't tried.

a kenyan website advertises sex services.
a cursory survey by the nairobi chronicle reveals that a significant number of young women in kenya earn their living by engaging in relationships with executives, diplomats, senior security officers as well as tourists. the relationships usually involve the lavishing of gifts, housing, cars and cash in exchange for sex.
apart from young women, youthful men are getting into the game by offering sexual services to upper-class men and women. as it turns out, many women who have succeeded in kenya’s corporate sector find themselves single. often, these women are willing to engage in relationships with younger men in exchange for providing cash and jobs.
at kenya’s coast, there are cases of married men getting involved with female tourists for money with the full knowledge of their own wives.
so brazen has the sex industry become that recruitment is done openly through newspaper classifieds and websites. one notorious website invites job applications complete with a passport photo with promises of, “immediate employment.”
it used to be that the epicentre of kenya’s sex trade was on nairobi’s koinange street. for many years, the street was a haven for scantily-dressed women patronized by men in limousines. not any more. well, there’s still some business on koinange street. however, the fact is that after dark, every street in nairobi becomes a den of prostitution. those who know where to look can find a woman or a man willing to have sex for money. famous restaurants are included in the list of sexual liaison facilities in nairobi.
sex trade is taking place right in the heart of the capital city. certain buildings which house executive offices have rooms hired out for the sex trade. however, knowledge of these facilities is restricted to practitioners and clients in the trade. its indeed ironical that hundreds of thousands of nairobians walk past the premises with little knowledge of the actual activities within these panelled walls.
nairobi’s massage parlours have achieved international notoriety. they are actually brothels in disguise, using the veneer of massage services to operate legitimately. once inside the parlours, clients are told that for an extra kshs1,000, they can get “special” services.
the massage parlours are located in respectable, upper-class residential areas such as hurlingham, westlands, parklands, spring valley, upper hill, south c and even around state house. it is not possible that these establishments exist without the knowledge of authorities. the parlours have a potential destabilizing effect in the minds of young children because of their location. in some cases, clients visiting the parlours have to jump over children playing within the corridors.
strip clubs are another growing concern, especially within nairobi. due to competition, an increasing number of restaurants are introducing strippers in order to gain clientele. many of the girls are highly educated college graduates who turn to stripping for lack of employment. a monthly take-home pay of about kshs20,000 a month (us$322) is very tempting in a poverty-stricken economy such as kenya’s.
and then there’s the hidden face of prostitution: international dating. a survey in nairobi cyber cafes found an overwhelming number of youth scanning their photos and uploading them to dating websites such as match.com and adultfriendfinder.com.
one thing that must be understood is that young people in kenya do not join dating websites so as to get their own age-mates for romance. far from it, majority of youths joining dating websites want to hook up with elderly, rich white men from europe and america. the hope is that with marriage, comes the prospects of gaining citizenship in those countries. in the meantime, there will be constant demands for money to take care of “emergencies,” “school fees,” “rent,” and the like.
as a consequence, all across nairobi will be found women renting expensive apartments, living big and buying the latest mobile phones. the women, more often than not, do not have an identifiable source of income.
occassionally, some of the foreign men come to kenya to visit their newly found girlfriends. scenes of octogenarian caucasians walking arm in arm with young kenyan girls are quite common in our streets. maternity hospitals in kenya are also recording an increase in inter-racial babies born to unmarried mothers.
there is strong evidence that the sex trade is contributing to [CodeWord908] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord908). some of the massage parlours and strip clubs in nairobi are providing women from as far as india, phillippines, south america and eastern europe. experience from other parts of the world would indicate that these women are subjected to horrific human rights abuses. it is a well-known fact, for instance, that clubs in nairobi specializing in eastern european women are patronized by shady personalities from former communist countries.
one girl working in a massage parlour told the nairobi chronicle that, “its a crazy life.” the women are subjected to long working hours with few breaks. those who provide hotel or home services often get sent off without pay. meanwhile, things are not better for those young people dating over the internet.
there are rumours that a well-known fashion model who was dating online, got severe injuries when her “boyfriend” visited her in kenya. it is said that the young woman had to spend thousands of shillings in medical treatment following the rendez-vous.
kenya’s economy is growing but not fast enough to provide jobs to its youth. each year, hundreds of thousands of people join the labor market from universities, colleges, high schools and grade school. there are simply not enough jobs for all of them. its obvious that many of these youth will turn to the sex trade in order to acquire the glitzy lifestyle they so much want to achieve.
unfortunately, the sex industry isn’t going to do much in creating a better society. there’s going to be an increase in [CodeWord124] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord124), in child sex and in perverted sexual practices. there will be a growth in homosexuality. morals will become relative, that is, as long as it pays then it must be good. that is the crisis facing the youth today and which bodes ill for the future of kenya.

2.-Hotels. Hotel Terminal and Eureka Highrise seem adjusted to my budget, but in Rough Guide I have read that the first does not allow guests after 7 p.m. and the second has "a vague christian atmosphere". Can anyone confirm that they are GF?. Or recommend another GF hotel of similar budget?.

I stayed at the Terminal Hotel about a year ago, and brought a girl back from Madhouse. There was no problem bringing her in, but I remember having to pay a small fee, which I believe was standard hotel policy.
Also stayed at Parkside for about $25 per night (single). Room was OK, probably somewhat better than the Terminal, but the hot water would only be turned on at certain times of the day which was a bit of a hassle. I brought a few chicks back here for ST and didn't have to pay any extra fee.
One extra story: The chick I brought back to the Terminal I had as an overnighter. I made the mistake of not negotiating a fee with her beforehand. In the morning I handed her 3000KES believing that to be a fair and good price. However she complained it was not enough for "an international club" so she refused to leave the room and wanted 5000KES. I just refused to give her any more cash and eventually after about 15 minutes she just walked out of the room without speaking to me.
The lesson guys is to agree on the price beforehand. Overall I found African women to be much more of a hassle than Asian women.

Actually, I completely agree with you and Hesekiels about negotiating prices beforehand (and never pay in advance) and, particularly, about the I'll-tempered african girls (generally speaking, because a nigerian lady has little to do with an ethiopian one, for example).

I was in Nairobi for about 4 days in October and found a new hotel called Green Court Hotel. Its on Latema Road off Tom Mboya Street, next to Midview Central Hotel.
It was well decorated and had a nice restaurant with tasty dishes. I paid 1500 per night without breakfast. The rooms were nice and the beds were good, I chose a room with a big window as some dont have a window to the outside but a small window onto the interior corridor and they were less light and airy. The rooms at the back and side are quiet and equipped with hot shower and satellite tv. Not bad for 1500. Its fine for mongering. I would recommend the hotel. The bar/restaurant is on the first floor, reception on 2nd floor, so if you have your room key you can climb from bar to room without directly passing reception. So if you brought in different girls it wouldnt be noticed.
The bar and restaurant are nice places to chill in when you want a change from your room and they show live UK football matches in both...its not quite as crowded and noisy as some bars! But you can watch the same matches in your room if you prefer. There is no need for a/c or fan, you just open the window a little. The bed has a surrounding curtain-like mosquito-net, which makes it seem like a sexy inner sanctuary. My girlfriend really liked the place and we made love without a care in the world.
I would recommend the hotel to anyone who is watching the pennies and you can get a cab just near the entrance if you dont want to walk around town.

My sense of Nairobi's safety, or lack of it, is very lacking.
From sources as varied as the New York Times travel section to Tripadvisor to here, reports of the advisability of walking around downtown at night are inconsistent at best; some suggest it is not a problem, others that it is sheer folly. Complicating the task of trying to glean a reasonable impression is the fact that the dangers themselves may well change with time, economic and political circumstances, etc.
A better sense of the safety of wandering is important to me, since such a huge part of the pleasure I derive from mongering involves the freedom to knock about in leisurely fashion, sampling the goods with my eyes and with conversation, moving on or stopping a while - shopping at my pace and without the pressure of crowds and loud music. Doing it from the cage of a taxi is rather unappealing.
I would love to hear from members about their take on the safety issue, and on what facts, if any, this take is based.

As with most cities worldwide ... "Common Sense" is the main safety factor !
The overall safety and even cleanliness of Nairobi has improved considerably over the past few years.
There are some areas in the city that are not recommended for a white guy to walk alone - at night - and so a taxi is recommended for even short trips.
There are areas in the city that are "okay" - depending on the common sense - eg :
Don't walk around with flashy jewelery / cameras / watches on show
Don't walk around with a fat wallet protruding from a pocket - and don't flash
wads of cash when paying for a drink etc !
Keep out of dark & deserted streets and alleys - stay in the man streets where there are people on the move, best of course in the better lit sides of the street.
After a few drinks ... get a cab back to the hotel !

So, any girls you guys meet through this advise you make sure you guys treat them nicely. That's the deal.

There are so many pretty girls on Facebook you wont believe it.
Just find one girl in Kenya, and then search through her friends. Add the ones you find attractive. Then you go trough the attractive girls friend lists as pretty girls normally have prettier friends than normal girls. Add more girls.
Keep doing this until you are happy with your selection. It should take you a couple of hours of home work. It's really worth it if you are looking for the true GF feeling.

I did that in Sept on a visit to Kenya and it worked ok. Another ploy is to tell each gal that you have many female employees in Kenya and that all the other gals in your friends list are your workers, so she should not feel jealous of them. If still jealous, add her in another id and delete her from the first.
When I first used facebook I hated it because it was unlike the dating sites, so public and so obvious if anyone is doing mongering. But if you can master the above switching and scheming, the rewards are massive!.

Just be told that the service at times is super slow, it will frustrate you but keep being a pain to them and they will fix whatever you ask for.
There is no negotiation on price, so you can forget to even try.
How I do it is the first night I check into The Terminal hotel, and then find a better solution from there. But from now on I'll probably check straight into Chester House.
Know they will ask for ID from the girls when you arrive late (not every time). The guards are bribe-able if you don't want to go through this.
To me this is not a big issue as I have a steady girl, and they wont bother her.

Budget wise, no fridge, no pool, no tv, no nothing except a bed, clean and safe is Terminal Hotel. It's a 5 min walk to Simmers

1. one reads a great deal these days about how high-speed internet is coming/has come to kenya and east africa. will i be able to watch streaming video of baseball at an internet cafe? (i know, i know...) is high-speed wifi available publicly if i bring my laptop?
2. does the terminal hotel have in-room television?

terminal does not have tv. just bed and shower (with hot water sometimes)

it's a lot more expensive, but great and the internet you get in your room (cable) is super fast (even by western standards)
there are some cafes that advertise that they have free wifi (check my earlier report), but i haven't experienced them myself. i've asked though, and have received negative reply.

I have stayed there on various days this March. As for the rates, the websites quotes single Kshs 2500, I paid ksh 2000 bed only, or kshs 2300 with breakfast buffet, for doulbe occupancy add kshs500. I's a decent enough place, not the best neighborhood, always took a cab at night, most cabs will from CBD will take you there for kshs 200. Avoid the 3rd floor if possible, they have a gym upstairs where people work out from 6am, complete with loud music.

ThanksI figured I'll contribute my 5cts about massage places. In March on a visit to Nairobi, I found this place that has 3 massage services, kind of like the 141 places in HongKong. The building spans Biashara street on one side, and Tubbman road on the other side. It's called DEV TOWERS, six stories high, and has a red brick facade. Entrances are on both sides from the streets I have named above. On the sidewalk there are two bill-boards that advertise hair salon and massage. The massage places are as follows;
First floor (actually 3rd level from the streets, but that's how they name the floors) has a massage and hair salon called 'First Choice' or something close to that. I went there twice, they open even on Sundays, and the selection was about 4-6 girls, cost was btn 1500-2000 for massage and extra (can be CBJ,HJ,FS). The hair salon and barber are actually functional, I saw some guy getting a hair cut there.
Second floor there is 'Jephers hair salon and massage' offering same services, though more massage than hair business, choice of 5 girls, cost was 1500-2000 for massage plus extra.
Fifth floor is 'La Celeb hair salon and massage' here they had a choice of 5-7 ladies, massage started at 1000 and extra as agreed upon, I paid 2000 for an unforgettable experience with a slim dark girl, who went by the name "Linda" but the names are not reliable, as the girls at times change them.
All three places are open from 9am to 8pm, and the bulding is 5 minutes walk from 'Terminal hotel' very close to Jevanjee park, the felt safe to walk around at all times including early evening.

While your wallet will do the talking for P4P, Indians will have a bit of a tougher time. There is a history of racial tension between Indians and Black Kenyans. So you may lose out if it is a choice between a Mzungu and you. Finding an Indian working girl is tough. I haven't seen many over the years. This might seem like a coincidence after what Sir Van Koff asked. I'm just wondering what is the general reception of asian guys in Kenya? Or more specifically a mid-twenties Chinese. Let me reply as follows:
1. Fairview - an oasis in Nairobi! Generally, girlfriendly. If you are not on budget, book a superior room - there are some superior rooms located in a separate building (outside of the main area, across the small street). There is a separate entrance gate to these rooms directly from the street, far from the main building & reception, so no "walk of shame", no problems at all. But expensive! However, nice rooms, great beds & a huge bathroom, free internet.
2. Madhouse, Florida 2000, Havanna, Black (or Blue?) Diamond and many others.
3. Daytime: Simmers, all shopping malls, everywhere!
4. See point 3: everywhere!

Let me reply as follows:
1. Fairview - an oasis in Nairobi! Generally, girlfriendly. If you are not on budget, book a superior room - there are some superior rooms located in a separate building (outside of the main area, across the small street). There is a separate entrance gate to these rooms directly from the street, far from the main building & reception, so no "walk of shame", no problems at all. But expensive! However, nice rooms, great beds & a huge bathroom, free internet.
2. Madhouse, Florida 2000, Havanna, Black (or Blue?) Diamond and many others.
3. Daytime: Simmers, all shopping malls, everywhere!
4. See point 3: everywhere!

I paid about 100 USD per night (August 2009) if I remember well (for one of their best apartments, located on the highest floor).
However, many stairs to climb (no lift) and the water pressure not the best at the highest floor, so next time I would prefer apartment located on the lower floors.
All apartments are very comfortable.
All in all, a perfect place for mongering.

Regarding breakfast: on my first day I did some some shopping at the Nakumatt Junction Supermarket. Everything available there, nice selection of foods, wine etc.
There is a kitchen in the apartments, fully eguipped with everything you need, so you can prepare your breakfast by yourself.
It was fun to prepare and take breakfast together with the girl in the morning and then to jump back into bed for the next session.
Distance to city center (Simers and others): 15 minutes by taxi, 400-600 KES
I don't know if this place still exists, did request a quote on their studios for my next stay in September both by e-mail and on their web site. No reply until today. Quite different with Chester House, which replied on the spot and answered my other questions a few hours later. Even though I would prefer NOA I guess I stay with my booking for Chester House.

They vastly outnumber all other foreigners in that town ; every streetboy in Malindi speaks Italian ; all supermarkets , restaurants , night clubs etc. cater to them primarily if not exclusively.
I feel very much shut out whenever I visit ( even though I enjoy cultural diversity in general and speak the language a bit ) , whereas I feel much more comfortable in Diani where we have a fairly large Italian population as well .

a week at chester house. see my earlier post.
a week at kenya comfort hotel on monrovia. very pleased. simple. reliable hot water. no frills. one tv station (al-jazeera news, which i rather like). 65 dollars a night for revolving-door double. fairly tight and occasionally ridiculously-so security, or so it seemed to me (adolescent security girls sitting on the elevator and reading a book?). no in-room safe but the wardrobes have padlocks. i felt comfortable locking up my laptop (with its own laptop lock which i attached to the metal dowel for clothes) and money, camera, etc. here with a padlock. highly recommended.
incidentally, i would not let the whole wireless/broadband availability thing occupy a moment's thought in determining your choice of lodging (it involved several moments' thought on my end before i arrived): get a 3g modem for your computer. even if you're dumb, you can install the software, buy the orange top-up cards (apparently orange's new modem for about 35 dollars is superior to safaricom's, but who knows) and be internet-independent with excellent high-speed. and very cheap for most surfing purposes. only gets pricey when you're a baseball addict and watch streaming video.
all the internet-cafes i tried, mostly out of curiosity, had very disappointing bandwidth. some hot women, though.
food (disclaimer- i am a serious foodie, but not a snob. if the food is delicious and the atmosphere is shit, but appropriately and contextually shit, then a place will only gain points in my estimation):
renalo foods. just north of the nations center building in the city center. excellent kenyan cooking in a bare-bones but clean setting. no menu, napkins or utensils. you go to the booth on the left, survey the piles of cards on spindles with food-names, order what you want, sit, give your cards to your waiter and wait for your delectables to arrive. collective sink at one end near the bathroom for washing your paws and face when you are done feasting. open late.
express grill. just next to the terminal hotel. excellent, cheap home cooking, like your kenyan grandma might make if you had one and she could cook. they stop serving around 7:30 pm.
habesha. ethiopian. excellent and very authentic. i ate at the one just off the uhuru pkwy in the center of town on several occasions. supposedly the inferior of the two habeshas in nairobi. the service is pleasant and dreadful. the food is sublime if you are a fan. open late.
the mean streets:
vastly overblown reputation on isg and elsewhere, in my opinion, for danger at night. as noddy pointed out, there is security everywhere along the streets of downtown. every 90 feet, at any hour, stands, stoops, snoozes or lazes a security person. yes, he is there for the business he is stationed near and not for you, but he is also an excellent general deterrent. and deterrent from what? i found no evidence of menace, thuggishness, etc. no gangs of ravenous nairobi youth, no lone marauders. maybe i was just stupid and lucky. but maybe the reputation is unwarranted, a holdover from more lawless days.
touts are way less a pain in the ass than in accra, as a comparison. they are here. but they're selling safaris and not trinkets and they have way less stamina. will not follow you for two blocks.
beggars are abundant, especially with babies.
cabs:
can anyone truly claim to be an expert in what a muzungu should ultimately pay? my take: between 50 and 70 percent of the asking fee seems reasonable. e. g. i had drivers insist on 2000 shillings one-way for a pretty hefty drive, especially in traffic, from city center to ngong, where a lovely girl of mine lives. she pays 1500. so i paid 1500. which is also what you should pay to and from the airport.
pools and lounging about:
you need only white skin at the hyatt, stanley and laico to chill at the pools of these exclusive joints. the health clubs are also your oyster; just "sign in" and fabricate a room number. yes, it's unethical. but they don't feel the crunch.
girls:
