Some Info on Sauna and Barbershops:

Note: I obtained these information from a website run by Taiwanese people and will translate here. I have not yet personally been to these places (will in 2 weeks when I am in SH, hehe), so please dont hold me responsible for any misinformation, I apologize first.

However, as we all know, TW (and HK) ppl are horny and these info are as recent as 6/23/03, so I would place some trust in it.

Sauna:
In Jing'An District. on Chang-Hua Lu (road) (this is north-south bound) between Hai-Fang Lu (East-West bound) and Chang-Ping Lu (East-West bound). No exact street location named on the original post, however, I checked the Shanghai map and found between those 2 roads running East-West, that segment of Chang-Hua Lu is very short, so I suppose any Sauna should be easy to spot. It is reported on 6/23/03, girls are 8.5-9.5 out of 10. Bath+Full Service is RMB600. This is a good deal considering sh*ty places like Atlantic (near XuJiaHui) charges close to and even more than this and girls there are not that great looking and that place is pretty shabby.

Barbershops:

1). In Pu Tuo District, get off at Cao-Yang Lu Station on the Elevated Rail ( is this how to translate the so-called Light Train?) and I was told there are 4 barbershops within 100 meters distance. All offer FS, between RMB150-300.

2). Cross-section of Bao Tong Lu and Bao Shan Lu, 3-4 girls, 22-24 yrs old. similar price.

The pros and cons of going to barbershops have been repeatedly discussed by me and others likewise, thus I will spare ppl about that. But, some ppl complained about not being able to find barbershops offering FS, thus the above info.

A side note: I have been told Shanghailily can be negotiated to USD 250/2hr and coming to hotels other than those specified on her website. So, that offer of RMB500/nt, I question whether it is real or not. But, come on, I never heard of escorts only going to 5-star hotels, who the hell does she think she really is, no pun intended.

Will be SH in 2 weeks, looking for a damn hot, but fun trip.

About Suzhou...while it's generally tame and sleepy compared to most cities in China of it's size, this is what I can offer you:

1) Casablanca is *the* nightclub where lots of KTV girls go after they get off work at midnight or 1am. Everynight....not just Monday night. However, there is a decent freelancer and freebie crowd inside and milling around the entrance starting at 10-11pm or so. My experience here is that females outnumber males mostly, especially after 1am when the KTV girls come in pairs and taxi-loads. If you're non-asian, you're likely to be the only one in the place. Location is Xin Shi Lu, not too far from Renmin Lu.

2) Barbershops in Suzhou generally close at 10 or 11pm during the week. On weekends they often stay open till midnight or 1am. I haven't yet found a truly good barbershop. Most of the ones I've surveyed never had very attractive girls on the couches so I passed. However, I've never really surveyed during daylight hours...maybe mid afternoon selection is better.

3) I only know one KTV in Suzhou, it's Taiwanese owned, and pretty pricey. As with all KTVs, not really recommended for a solo trip unless you have a bottomless wallet. Get the girls at Casablanca afterwards.

4) Not familiar with Yongor hotel. If the hotel has a sauna/massage, you will be almost certain to find satisfaction. Best to visit the sauna desk in person and make your desires known (vs. just phoning and taking what gets sent to your room). At the Gloria Plaza Hotel (Kai Lai Da JiuDian), the sauna is open till at least 2am. When I stayed there I had a big-racked 7.5 girl sent to my room and talked her down to RMB 600 for ST I think (details a few months back in this forum).

5) There's a major bar street (name escapes me now). Your hotel will know it, or just get in the cab and tell the driver you want the bar street or beer street. Take a walk down this street and you'll find bars with lots of girls outside beckoning you in. These girls are available for take-away. Do not be fooled into thinking you'll get any action in the bar if you "go upstairs" even if they offer a "Massage upstairs." If you fall for it, you'll likely be wasting RMB and time. Go into the bar with the girl, have one drink (it will be an expensive drink, say 50RMB per beer), then make your proposal and take her out quickly without paying any other fees to the house or mommy (Mommy may require RMB 100 to take her away).

You may also find freelancers or bored local girls at any of the more normal bars on that street. City Hunter is a possibility, also Pulp Fiction. Tom's pub near the Friendship hotel is also a possible chat-her-up spot.

Lastly, I'll be in Suzhou next week, so please post your findings here. I could use a new stomping ground, as I'm not sure my married freebie KTV hostess is still in town or available for additional exhausting evenings. Thanks in advance for repaying the favor. Have a good time in Suzhou.

I went to 'Alice Sauna & Ktv' at the junction of Changpinglu and Changfalu which is about 10 mins walk northwards from Meilongzhen on Nanjingu. Full service for 600 + 48 for bath (I had a towel rub which is listed at 38 and a drink for 10....they must have waived the 48 shower fees).

Full Service in BB shop on Xiang Yang Rd.

At the begining of Xiang Yang Rd at the corner of Zhaojiabang Rd which becomes Hongqioa when it arrives at Xu Jia Hui Shopping area.

The way I actually got here is from Huai Hai Rd. I went on a bike against traffic (its a 1 way street) until I landed at the very end.

This is a very good question! I will try to answer: Sure our fellows will have some to add to this topic.

I am flying into Shanghai tonight and will be there for 2 weeks staying at the Westin Shanghai. It is my first time to shanghai, so locations and street names mean nothing to me at this time.

In smaller towns I get better deals and hoping to find some that are less expensive.

for example I think there are some far out areas past Gubei etc...

Firstly, enjoy the Westin...it's an f'ing awesome new hotel. Take advantage of the broadband on the 2nd night (when jetlag kicks in) and browse through the last 6-8 months of the this forum. Lots of details and addresses here.

Unfortunately, the Westin not in the best area for mongering, as it's right downtown in the heart of the area. You're going to have to either hop a cab or be willing to engage in trial-and-error.

If you're ready to walk into a few very local barbershops, here's where to go:
exit main doors of Westin to the street (Henan Rd) and turn right.
at the first street, go left. toward the end of this block on the right are one or two local type barbershops. I'm not sure what if any services are available...I prowled this area at 10am on a Sunday before a flight out.
If no luck, take a right at the intersection you're about to hit. There's a barbershop on the left about 20m that looked likely and another one or two down the way on the right. You'll feel like you're in a very local area (feels miles from the newness of the westin).

That's the best I can tell you near the Westin. Again, best luck will be to spend 10-20RMB and hop in a cab to go to some the places detailed on this forum. Let us know what you find (or don't).

Just returned from the great city. Here is the report.

2) After 1) above, I want to try something more localized. So I discovered this massage parlor called Ocean across from Hong Kong Plaza but in the direction of Sommerset. 2 hours massage, sauna, pick the girl I wanted and she did an bbbj with CIM for a total of 900. Not bad.

For my last posting, let me clarify a few things.

For 4000 to have a 24 hours luxury is really special. But you need to know the breakdown.

Normal taxi from Pudong to Sommerset would be about 200rmb. (Instead, I get special private limo.)

Dinner for five people will be about 600rmb. (ok. I could have one on one instead of 4 ladies dined with me.)

Kereoke for 2 hours will be about 700 (ok. I could sing by myself.)

Natalie one session without overnight will be about 1500rmb.
Overnight will be about 2000rmb. (500 more, but I had her with another all the time.)

The tips for the two other girls the whole night playing will be 600rmb. (They did not work for free. 300rmb for the whole evening is nothing.)

Linda's tips is about 0. (because my client knew her and probably took care of her already in some other way. No mamasan in Shangahi have her driver drive you around in brand new Buick and wait for you like that.)

That is what my client paid for me, 4000rmb.

Sometimes even if you want to pay 4000rmb to get my experience, you might not get the right girls. I know it is expensive but it is worth it for me once in a while. I can't afford this for myself. But my client arranged ahead of time and paid for me every . I only paid the next girl for 6 hours. Still worth it because I already spent a good 6 hours the first night dinning and singing and touching except the ultimate.

Recent experience with KTV: selected the one on Kai Xuan Lu (6281-5999), recommended in an earlier post. It seems to me that the KTV has a better quality (younger, hotter, better dressed, etc.) of girl, but cost more than the other options. This place is very convenient as the Mama – Angela – speaks excellent English. Her mobile number is 138 0197 6554. The place is huge with at least 100 girls there on a slow night. With so many girls to choose from, you are assured of finding something you like. Angela tells me that 80% of the girls will go-out. (At some KTVs many girls don’t go out.)

Another good thing is that the first 2 times there I told Angela that I only wanted to take out a girl and not stay in the room. This way I only gave Angela a 200 RMB tip and paid the girl 1,100 RMB. The third time I went with a friend and we were told we MUST take the room and pay the 300 RMB minimum before we could take out the girls.

I had good experiences with the girls but when I contacted them for a follow-up meeting they insisted on 1,000 RMB. I thought an afternoon meeting with one of these girls should be discounted to like 4-500 but they really stick to their guns. What is the deal with this????

After the KTV experiences I thought I would go back and try out the scene at Bourbon street, on MaoMing and JuLu Lu. Perhaps I was a bit early some nights but the quality was quite bad. All I found was older women. Manhattan on MaoMing was the biggest disappointment. I went to 'Xintiandi' last friday. Haven´t been there for a while. I was astonished about the activities going on there. The hotspot certainly was 'Luna', with its incredible Philippino-Band. The place was packed with beautiful girls, also some pros. Really nice place. Also 'Paulaner's' did have some nice-looking chicks, always glancing at you.

Was in Shanghai last week and checked out the scene as outlined in earlier posts. Tried first to hit Windows Too. Be advised that an earlier post implies it's right across the street from the Ritz Carlton - it's about a 10 minute walk down. Anyway, incredibly loud music and very young girls but none that looked like they were working - just shooting pool and drinking and having fun.

Then hit Paulaner, Luna and La Maison. Paulaner was packed but they don't let you stand and there weren't any free tables. How can you meet girls if you're tied to a table? I am a long time traveller to Asia but am now in Shanghai for the first time. I think that I'm going to like it here. I have skimmed over the reports here and have questions.

I am staying at one of the large hotels on Nanjing about a block away from the Hard Rock. I went in there last night at around 9pm and it was sparse. DCinSB- The section of MaoMingLu is NOT that close to where you were. The infamous and famous Mao Ming Nan Lu, is south of you by a ways, likely the other end of the road you saw. I would recommend that you get a tourist map and check it out. After JetLag subsides a bit, it will be at least an interesting place to check out as Manhattan and JudysToo (both of which are full of semi pros and pros) are down there along with masses of people bar hopping, shopping for gals and gals selling their wares.

This is just a general report about the situatin in Shanghai...

Barbershops... they're everywhere... Definitely not the cleanest places... but you get the best prices here... Personally, I have never been to one... I have only looked inside and that already makes me very hesitatnt.

KTV..... These are everywhere too.... when you're riding around in a taxi... just look around for very bright neon lights with KTV ... 99% of the time the girls will go home with you... for the right price.

I was at one a couple of days ago... and the tipping is $300-500 for sitting with you.. and then $1500-$1800 to go home and spend the night.

I was like, "You're kinda ugly for asking that price!" :) I'm not cheap, but I do not like to over-pay for sub-quality...

Piano-Bars... there's a lot of these around too... girls can also be had... you just need to try a little harder... the prices here vary...

Bars.... they're everywhere too.. You can go to Maoming Lu, Xintiandi, Henshang Lu, or even your neighbordhood bar... they all have girls that work... it depends on your taste... looking for professional or amateur or someone who doesn't even have an idea that you want to take them home...

The intersection of Nanjing and Maoming is the north end of Maoming. You need to walk about 4, or so, blocks south on Maoming until you cross whaihai road. That is where the restaurants and bars start. Better yet, take a taxi to Judy two's. Your hotel can help you. That will put you in the correct area.

You can also go to Julu road. It is maybe 5 blocks from you. Look for the Hilton hotel on a city map. Julu is just a block or two from there.

You are also just a block from Tongren road. Go west on Nanjing to Tongren and take a right. There is a restaurant named Malones where you can get a good (expensive) burger and, at times, meet a few semi pros upstairs at the pool table area. Also look across the street at the sauna. It has been the object of several posts.

Paid a visit to Maoming last night. The guy at the hotel didn't have a clue about the area and told me it was just a short walk. Half an hour later in this nasty heat I arrived none to pleased. Well I finally tried a barbershop. I went to Yili Lu. Correct me if I am wrong, but it is not actually on Yili Lu but a street perpendicular to it. There is exactly 3 shops all together, all within a few shops of each other.

Anyways, I picked the middle one b/c there was only 2 girls and one looked pretty decent. Plus she was inviting me in and since its my first time, i dont know what to expect. Yes, sometimes they'll take clothes off w/o asking but you best make sure they will before agreeing to price. I insisted that for the amount I pay, I will be playing with them as they with me.

I think that 2nd shop gets more of their share of the busines just because most of us skip the first one with the good looking girls just as a habit. I went back to the Yili Lu and got a better experience this time, after everyone's helpful hints.

Prior to that, I decided to walk from Carrefour to Yili. I noticed a couple of shops along the way, on Yanan Rd, not too far from Carrefour. Its same side as Carrefour, maybe 5 minutes walk away. The places look like shit, but I saw a pretty hot girl in a short dress at one of the places. Thinking of going there next time.

I went to visit one of the barbershops on Kangding Lu this afternoon. I believe the few posts I read were regarding the shop on the right, and the reviews were either bad or fair. I decided to take one for the team and try the one on the left. And I really took one for the team. There was only 2 girls. One was skinny and just average looking. She was busy. Therefore I had the other girl who didn’t seem that much fatter with her clothes on but when she took it off, she was damn FAT! As I am new to these barbershop things, I didn’t know how to say no... after all I was already naked too by then and we have went upstairs to the attic. It was exactly as described in earlier post, climbing a dark and steep staircase. The attic was actually a crawl space. But lying down, it is quite spacious. Or you can stop by any place and look at the ads in the windows.

BTW, I dont consider those streets all that fun so you may bein for a surprise how much MORE fun you can have in this town once you discover that those streets are just the tip of the iceberg, and they are overpriced - unless that is what you are looking for.

In my opinion, the best barber shop in Shanghai is on Daduhelu (´ó¶ÉºÓÂ·£©near Nujianglu (furious river road) , as the boss offers his house (bedroom) to regular customers. It is located in the northwest part of Shanghai in Putuo District.

Tried out the Sauna on Changhua Lu (Directions given earlier at this forum) left side though if you’re heading north.

Checked in with the lady behind the counter and got my key. Then the usual procedure, strip, shower and you get your bathrobe. (They have two pools, a sauna, and a steaming room, but it’s a bit old like the most of these places). After getting the robe its time to find your way to the action, first you are passing a big dining room with a buffet, (don’t know if the food is included in the price or not) go past that and take the stairs to the second floor, there you will be showed into a big room with lots of comfy chairs (almost like a movie saloon) sit down and relax for 5 minutes, than a lady will come and ask you if you want massage. Follow her up to the 3:rd floor and you will be showed into a room with a bed (regular size, not a massage bench) after a while your lady will come, if you are not pleased it’s possible to change lady. Then it was pretty straightforward. We both striped I lied down on the bed and she started to lick my whole body for a cpl. of minutes, then a CBJ, a short Binghuo and then FS in many positions. If you have any time left (one hour in the price) after you’re done, she will give you a massage. The girl was the KTV-type 7+ and quite friendly. The price is 45 for the Sauna (which you don’t have to pay if you go for massage) and 600 for the massage. Since Xian Xia Lu is crowded with Taiwanese, you are likely to find action there. Check for the usual signs, pitty girls looking bored. However, if it's on the main street, you probably won't get lucky.

As for in the back of Carrefour, the babershops are regular. However, working in the opposite direction crossing the ShuiCheng Lu, walk about 3 minutes, turn to your left and there is a babershop on your right. If you see a babershop on your left, you turn too fast. Next entry.

That place is a dup. don't go there. I was there at 6pm and it was like shut down, hardly any lights on. I walked down a long dimly lit hallway to a counter but it was unattended. The lady at the counter said that it was closed because too few were working and the sauna was also closed. At least I didn’t have to spend my money on some bad massage. And now you dont have to waist your time finding the place

St. Regis is definitely okay. I did it once at 1 or 2am with a nicely dressed girl, but one who's face was done up like the SW she was.

The key things when bringing a girl back to your room at any nice hotel are:
1) make sure she doesn't look/dress like a total ho
2) be talking and joking around with her as you enter...keeps you two looking natural

Thank you for the advice. I stayed one night at the Grand Hyatt, a fabulous hotel BTW, but the heavy security, cameras in the hallways and sign by the elevator that says Guest Access Only discouraged me from trying to bring a girl. Someone had posted a trick to bypass security at the Hyatt: go to one of the restaurants and then go to your room from one of the other elevators. I think that would work, but during business hours only; i.e. before midnight.

If you don't speak any Chinese, which is my case, it is a pain to take a taxi. I tried to locate a hotel that would allow me to walk to Mow Ming and the area around the Portman but I don't think there are many. The Hilton is near Ju Lu Lu but I was looking for something a little bit more upscale, so I guess I would have had to stay at the portman or one of the Garden Hotels, but then I would have been farter away from Xin Tiandi.

In the end and after reading your post, I decided to take no risk and opted fot the St Regis + taxi combination. Went to Paulaner on Xin Tiandi around 11PM. Sat outside for a while but not much going on outside. A band was playing inside and a bunch of old men were dancing with young girls. That was encouraging but I think I was there too late. Most of the girls were taken, the others won't approach you or make more than very light eye contact, so I found it hard to tell the working or willing girls from the others since it is essentially a regular bar. The I went to Luna across the street but there was no single girl there and La Maison was already closed. I guess you must start early in Shanghai.

I would not be dissuaded by cameras and signs like you describe at the Hyatt....China is famous for putting up a "proper" front but always turning a blind eye. I think you did alright for 500 for ST with a "beautiful girl" At the time, you didn't know about her oral skills/disinterest, so not bad...and you did all right for not speaking much chinese.

Cabs are no problem in shanghai, especially if you catch one at a hotel...just tell the bellman where you want to go.

Xintiandi is more active later on the weekends....Luna is usually a good spot. But as you found, willing girls are always out somewhere that might surprise you....just follow that eye contact.

Just an FYI...when I go to Shanghai I usually stay at the Hotel Equatorial (right next to the Hilton).

I have a girlfriend that owns a couple of bars, and depending on how busy it is, she doesn't feel comfortable leaving, at times, until the wee hours of the morning.

Went out for a walk on Saturday morning in Suzhou about 10am to get some juice and a phone card. I have gone through the old reports, what's a barber shop?

A barber shop is a place where you have your hair washed and cut and have your face shaved. In WSG forum, what we mean a barber shop is not the regular one where you can have yourself groomed. Rather, it is a dimly lit place with young girls (often they are from neighboring or inland provinces) sitting on sofa watching TV or looking bored. Yes, I am Chinese, though not a local Shanghainese. I do not often negotiate the rates in barbershops I go to except for once when I opt for Shuangfei (Ë«·É, two girls session)

Yes, I believe so. People in China often charge high price to Laowai, but you can insist on paying the common rate.

Hi All,

Well I havent been posting lately, mainly because I've been hitting up all the regular barbershops on Yili and Kandinglu.

I'm also in the process of going through the thread and compiling a list of all barbershops.

After being a somewhat regular to these shops now, I've been able to spot many, many more shops that I want to try. There are so many in Shanghai. By the Holiday inn Crowne Plaza, there is a couple on the right hand side on Fahauzhen lu. A couple of the girls are not bad looking in there. If you continue going down the street (2 blocks) you will cross an intersection, Dingxi Lu. Immediately on the right hand side there is a shop with over 10 girls, and more than a few were 7 or 8s. A few shops down on the left hand side of the street is another shop with a few girls that were just ok. Continue to the end of the street and make a left, there is another shop with 3 or 4 girls at the end of that street.

There is a shop on Xinzha Lu, between Xikang Lu and Changde Lu (which are the 2 side streets of the Portman). From the portman, its like 3 blocks North. The place is not the nicest, but seems like alot of girls and closest to downtown.

I went for a walk last nite from the Yanan Teahouse to Yili lu. Quite a long walk btw, but it was cool outside. On Yanan Lu, between Carrefour and Hongqiao Lu, there is a few shops. The girls there are by far lower than average in looks compared with other places. I did see one decent one though. The places there are quite dirty too, but if anyone is interested, im sure the prices are quite cheap there, even for laowais.

Anyways, I havent checked out most of these places yet. I will though soon. I'm still a bit intimidated to go into some of these places, especially if there is alot of ppl in there or if the establishment is big or quite nice. Dont want to embarass myself by asking for extra serice when all they do there is cut hair. By "Xi Qu", I am assuming you are staying in the vicinity of Chang Ning Qu (Chang Ning District)?

Here are your options as I see it, please dont take this the wrong way, I am not here to lecture you, merely to share some of my finds. I myself will be in Shanghai at the end of the month.

1). If your budget is RMB600 for a pop of young, pretty girls, I have a contact number. That number was already circulated among some of the friends, very discreet. Let me know.

2). If your budget is a favor from your business associates and upwards of RMB1500, go to KTVs ( I dont mean cashbox). If you are interested in some bigger names, I might be able to point you in the right direction. But, I would highly recommend against you going in there by yourself. Doing that will effectively waste you a whole night of time and some serious money, ie, at least RMB 2000.

3). If your budget is RMB 100-150 for a pop and/or you are after the adventure of going to a barbershop, you can read my earlier reports. But, I know 3 barbershops on Shan (not Shaan) Xi Road offer FS. going price is RMB150/Q (pop). This street is near the intersection of He Nan Lu and Hai Ning Lu.

But, dont get fixated on a particular street or a particular barbershop. Basically, in all barbershops, HJ can be had for RMB 40-50. But, BJ and FS is just YMMV. One of my biggest problem is that I am Chinese by blood, so these girls are always afraid that I am an undercover cop. If you are white, then that problem is gone. However, they might be worried how much to trust you and whether they like you or not. XUJIAHUI area has quite a few barber shops on Nan Dan Lu. Take a walk around and you can't miss the frosted windows.

The Government has cracked down on many barber shops in Shanghai. There used to be many more barber shops. They don't like it being known esp. to foreigners. Prostitution is illegal and it reflects badly on the Gov. Remember China is not an open minded country in this sense like Holland etc.

In Panyu, I used to go to a massage/sauna place that charges RMB230 for sauna, shower, an OK 2 hr. massage with a HJ at the end. I have been in SH now for 6 weeks and have yet to know of a place offering similar service for a reasonable fee. Can you guys help.

To answer my own post of a couple of weeks ago, stayed at the Tong Mao Hotel in Pudong (over the road from the Shanghai Futures Exchange) on Tuesday night. Wednesday lunchtime went for a walk back towards Shanghai proper, and came across a likely looking BBS - according to the descriptions on this board.

This was my first time in a SH BBS, and went as per the script. Asked for a massage, quoted Rmb50, went upstairs to a room where I had to duck down to enter, passed a curtained cubicle where a guy was obviously enjoying himself with a very tall and cute loking woman.

Laid on the table, and indicated I wanted a HJ. No problem. She took her top off, gave enthusiastic service, and 10 minutes later it was all over. Wasn't sure of the price, but gave her 100, and she seemed very happy. No more to pay downstairs.

More specific directions - head out of the hotel, turn right, turn right again and walk thru the Champs Eleysee Apartments to the next street, turn left and walk to the next intersection - about 150m. BBS is straight across the road.

As far as any other place for similar value, I have only been to some places out in Ming Hang (I think) which were 500 for FS because I went with a group of regulars who get a discount. Also Happy Garden is FS, and is over 800. I am not aware of any other places similar to what you mention and for a low price like that.

sanya, china -- inside a darkened waiting room that smells of cigarette smoke and mold, the karaoke hostesses of the guoxi hotel occupy a long couch. some apply makeup. others adjust bra straps and waistbands. liu stares blankly toward a big television screen, upon which a young woman with flowing black hair sings in cantonese about a faraway lover.

waiting fills most of the hours for a miss ktv, as the karaoke hostesses are known. waiting for men fresh from the palm-fringed beaches of this resort town on hainan island. hainan is perhaps best known in the united states as the place where an american surveillance plane crash-landed in 2001 after a confrontation with a chinese military aircraft. in china, the island is known as a haven for prostitution.

when a client arrives, requesting a private room, the girls snap to attention. the mama-san picks liu and two others, who stand nervously in front of the customer for inspection in their tight black pants and halter tops. his choice will determine who will take home nothing tonight, and who will collect tips of $25 or more for flirting and touching while he sings and drinks. he might invite them back to his hotel for sex, handing over as much as $125. it is more money than liu made in two months as a salesclerk in her hometown 1,000 miles away.

liu, whom the post is identifying by only her family name, and the others at the guoxi hotel are part of what may be china's most dynamic capitalist enterprise -- a flourishing trade in sex. though technically illegal, it has become increasingly open and ubiquitous in cities and towns across the world's most populous country. some local governments have tapped into the flow of money by taxing the trade. as many as 10 million people take part in the industry, according to an estimate in the 2001 u.s. state department human rights report for china.

the trade has always existed here on a smaller scale, but its rapid growth is a product of china's ongoing economic transformation from a communist country in which jobs and social benefits were modest though assured into one where nearly anything is possible but nothing is guaranteed. money-losing state companies are closing, leaving tens of millions out of work. the women -- and, increasingly, men -- who work in the sex trade are among tens of millions who have forsaken homes in china's poorer, interior regions for better prospects in coastal areas booming with foreign investment and new wealth.

in a way, liu and her cohort are models of the kind of rugged individualism that china's leaders have sought to inculcate as they have tied the country's future to the free market. "these prostitutes have solved the unemployment problem for themselves," said pan suiming, a sexology professor at people's university in beijing.

but not without grave cost to themselves and chinese society in general. the sex trade is an increasingly significant channel for the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, according to health officials. since 1995, cases of gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia have increased more than 30 percent annually, according to government data. experts say those numbers are surely low given that most patients seek treatment in private clinics that do not report data to central authorities. more than 120 million chinese are already infected with hepatitis b, and at least 1 million have hiv, the virus that causes aids, according to the government.

in some countries -- notably thailand and the netherlands -- governments have acknowledged the scope of their local sex trade and targeted prostitutes with programs to encourage condom use to prevent the spread of infections. not in china. local governments are enmeshed in prostitution through their ownership of hotels that draw customers and profit from the trade, but for the communist party, whose legitimacy rests in part on having supposedly eradicated such social vices, the thriving industry is deeply embarrassing. that has stymied efforts to regulate it and limit its harm.

"they don't want to talk about prostitution," said xu keyi, who oversees the di tan hospital research center for sexually transmitted diseases in beijing. "they figure the communist system is the best system in the world, so we wouldn't have prostitution. it's an ugly thing and we don't like ugly things."

at the local level, the sex trade engenders corruption. prostitutes in massage and beauty parlors as well as karaoke lounges must hand over tips to everyone from the mama-sans who arrange the encounters to taxi drivers and tour agents who bring in clients. they must share their take with the bosses who employ protection syndicates that dispense a mixture of cash and violence to encourage would-be earnest local officials to look away, the sources said. much of the money lands in the hands of local police and other officials, according to those in the trade.

four years ago in shenyang -- an industrial city in china's northeast -- the mayor, mu suixin, urged the opening of bars and massage parlors as an antidote to unemployment.

he gave prostitutes licenses and applied 30 percent taxes to their earnings. the resulting windfall encouraged other cities to follow suit.

that has helped make china's sex trade one of the world's more brazen. at the zhaolong hotel in beijing -- a five-star, government-owned establishment that is often full of chinese military officers -- an older woman solicits male guests in the lobby during evening hours, in a normal voice and in full view of hotel staff. at other hotels around the country, male guests are routinely awoken by hotel receptionists, who ask, "are you lonely?" a company that calls itself yuan union organizes sex parties geared to foreign diplomats and businessmen in beijing, shanghai, shenzhen and other major cities, according to an e-mail solicitation.

china's government tolerates prostitution for its economic value. for one thing, many in the trade are helping to support families back home in struggling rural areas.

at club butterfly, a karaoke lounge in shenzhen, a bustling city of new skyscrapers just over the border from hong kong, pan, 24, said she gave up hopes of a university education and left her home in the western city of chongqing to work as a prostitute so that her younger brother could continue to attend school. she is now sending as much as $300 a month home. she tells her parents she is a waitress.

"in china, daughters are not very important," she said. "it's the son that matters. unless i leave and find work, there's no way that my little brother can continue his education."

three years ago, liu was making $50 a month in a state-owned department store in dangyang, a city in the central chinese province of hubei.

like many state-owned companies, the store was losing money. when a private businessman took control, he laid off workers, including liu, to cut costs. liu's parents, who once enjoyed stable incomes from state-owned businesses, were now heavily in debt.

liu, then 23, followed a friend who had already moved away and landed a sales job in shenzhen, booming with money from the thousands of hong kong people who moved there to save on living costs. liu found her sales job for about $100 a month, twice her salary at home. she and her friend shared a small bed in a tiny room, she said, one of six separated by plywood boards on a single floor of a house. her rent was $50 a month. food and transportation ate up another $40 a month. she was barely getting by. some months she was borrowing from her friend.

early last year, she decided it was time to move on. her cousin was already in hainan, working as a hostess. liu called her.

hainan markets itself as a family tourist destination and convention locale. but once the sun sets, young women begin arriving at the beach resorts.

liu said she knew full well what the job description of a hostess usually means. here, she could at least be sure she would not run into anyone she knew from home and suffer the disgrace of being discovered by her parents. "if they knew, they would throw me out of the family," she said.

at first, liu worked in the same karaoke place as her cousin. but it was a lower-end establishment and the tips tended to be small. two months ago, she switched to the guoxi, a higher-class place frequented by visitors from hong kong, taiwan, korea and japan. every few weeks, she said, one of the men invites her to his room.

liu is earning about $400 a month, she said. it is enough to send home about $50 and still set aside much of the rest. enough for the slinky dresses she needs to buy at the market, and enough for the makeup that occupies a low table in the bedroom she shares with her cousin. they split the $90 monthly rent with a third roommate, a former police officer from hubei. a color television occupies a table in their sitting room.

liu has designs on putting away enough money to go back to hubei and open up a flower shop. maybe next year.

"this isn't my real life," she said. on her television, another woman is singing in cantonese about love gone wrong. save for the sunlight splashing through the sitting-room window, she could be in the club. waiting. so much waiting. "i just want to make that money and go home."
