Coincidentally I read your report directly after my first visit to Ancol, whilst there I was thinking the same thing (despite being with my gf my mind was taking in the scenery, well you can't change human nature can you?). Ancol is certainly full of local talent, it appeared to me though that they were mainly kampung girls who wouldn't be so up for it as the girls in the malls and clubs. Just another couple of angles on the malls. Although you don't need courage (Dorman!) - a variation on the approach I outlined is this: if you've been wandering around and seen lots of SPG's but daren't "risk it" you can wait until the end of their shift and "get them" when they leave the building. This relies on the (certain) fact that a lot of girls will have noticed you and realised what you were up to but perhaps they didn't want to "make the move" especially if they were busy with other customers.
Simply wait at the "employees" exits and make eye contact with girls coming out. This strategy works best after the morning shift and I've only done it at PI though I guess it would work at others too!. Between 3pm and 3.30 there will be at least 100 girls coming out of any one exit. Note they don't come out of the main entrances customers use, the best place to wait is near the underground car park entrance as there is a workers exit there. I've done this a few times and found on average 2 or 3 girls (some I hadn't noticed myself) say "hello" as they came out. It's easy to take it from there..
Another angle, more of long shot and I discovered it by opportunistically: always look in the foriegn language section in the book shops. On three recent occassions (in PI) I've had girls talk to me on the basis that they are on English courses and want to practice the language. Two of them politely declined when I asked them back to my hotel for a drink but one of them accepted and seized the opportunity to practice her oral skills. Surfer - Ancol is worth looking at on Sundays. It's quite different to malls of course - lots of groups of girls and families having a day out. A very similar "hunting" environment to Taman Mini Indonesia and Bogor. It's very easy indeed to make friends with groups of girls as it's something of a novelty (for them). The kind of girls you meet are rarely found in malls and almost never in clubs and bars. The downside is it's more difficult to get an individual away from the group. Dorman - it's near Aryaduta Hotel, address is Jl. Senen Raya. Decent taxi's should know it. Given your aversion to risk you can be sure of finding it by going to astonatrium.co.id which is the website of the hotel next door and there you will find a map ! You don't need to keep your taxi as there are Bluebird taxi's waiting for you when you come out with your girl(s).
Atrium is different from the more up-market market malls as I (and others) have said. Actually there are dozens of others like it but you may as well start there. Getting a girl in there is more like getting one in a club but they are very much less obvious about it, so it is, as you imply, a good place to "start". I'm referring to capturing "customers" not SPG's.
If you want to make it REALLY easy adopt the following approach. You may have read about certain coffee bars you can sit in and observe and wait; that's OK but to be more pro-active turn right when you go in and wall down the right hand "wing" until you come to the circular atrium with a kids play area on the ground floor. Go up the escalator to the top floor and lean on the rail looking around and down. Best time is 3pm onwards, ideally Saturday. This is a favorite place for girls who are looking out for a pick-up. They are often in pairs or three's. Don't be put off. Usually they ask to go for something to eat. You must decide how to play it - you could just invite one back to your hotel (NB previous post) or if you want to de-risk it, go for something to eat with her (plus friends) and negotiate which one(s) you will take back. If they go for something to eat you can be CERTAIN that you will get one or all of them.
Beware, you will not be alone in the hunt. There will be Indonesian guys who are experts. You need to be decisive or they'll pounce on the girl(s) before you know what's happened. However, it's a useful, confidence given lesson to watch them. Last time I (even "I", dare I say) was in there, I saw an excellent young girl, got some eye contact but thought "no" she's too good to be up for it. By the time I'd finished thinking that, some fat old ugly bastard (even older than me!) exchanged half a dozen words and disappeared out of the building with her. If they persist (unlikely) and ask who, just say "woman" (wanita). As an absolute last resort they might offer to get you a girl if you are not sufficiently convincing. Tell them you already got one. (sudah punya). DON'T leave the building with him!
More sage advice from Bulai, so let me add a list of things to bring to JKT to maximize enjoyment:
First, to repeat a suggestion I've made before, get a pocket flashlight to bring to TCs (and other dark environments to avoid unpleasant surprises)! The smaller the better, and I use a red ink pen to color the lens red so the light is softer (a bright light in a dark place is too stark on the eyes plus it draws attention-use your light DISCRETELY!
Second, buy a Bahasa translator (or a dictionary as a lesser option). The Alfalink EI-16 is about $20 and can be bought in larger malls in Jakarta. It is a GREAT icebreaker and MANY girls will crowd around to see what you have. This m,akes it easier to ditch an unwanted clingon and start chatting with the object of your affection.
Third, buy three roses before going inside a club (preferrably 2 of another color and one red). Give the first to your waitress and the second to the mamasan. They will CERTAINLY ask you who the third one (Red) is for-you say you haven't found her yet but it is for your new kekasih (GF) when you find her. The girl you choose gains face as the other girls in the bar are envious you choose her.
Fourth: Buy a CD player with travel speakers-this is CRITICAL in Latin America, but is not to be overlooked in SE Asia either. Having music in your room adds ambience.
Fifth: get some ROMANTIC CDs in the local lingua franca. For Indonesia the best, IMHO, is Kris Dayanti.

Actually according to Jakarta24, Stadium will be closed for Ramadan. BATS will be open 10 till midnight, Retro will close at 1am, My Bar will close at midnight (I'd imagine there will be no wet T-shirt competition). Yes, officially Stadium would be closed. The discoteque and the Karaoke will be closed. The Bar would be open. The resto on the ground floor will be open. The moment you step out of the lift, thye Mamasan will ask you if you want a girl. Meat Lover - all malls are action places in my experience and this is no exception. I picked up a girl in Izzi Pizza there. I think the reason this mall and others like Ciputra (and those in that area) get little or no mention is that they are a long way from the business area around Sudirman or the south jakarta expat area. They are good if you have the time to look and generally there are fewer bules there.

Thanks for the comments so far on D's upstairs bar. $100 is certainly a lot of money in Jakarta terms and would get you a number of little fucklets. I suppose the question is whether it's worth it in terms of a slightly different type of experience. Some dirty lapdancing, especially with a topless or nude sweetie, would be a great bit of fluffing to get you charged up for an evening of other activities.
And I assume the $100 is for an extended period of membership. That amount of money for one visit would certainly NOT be worth it.

You could stay at Le Meridien on that budget, in which case "finding action" will not be too much of a challenge: you just step on an escalator after 9pm and go down to the Tiga Puluh Bar (30 Bar) and there it will be. If you want to travel further, you could go to the other hotel bars mentioned many times in here (BATS, CJ's etc). That's the easy, low risk but not the cheapest method. In that "market" they will try it on and ask up to US$100 but you will certainly get a really nice girl between US$30 - 55 (all night)
Mall hunting takes more time but is more "rewarding" - I've written lots about that and posted the (photographic) results so you can form your own view on whether to spend time trying it.
For 100% certainty you can of course go for MP's: Menteng is a good "trusted advisor" on that as evidenced by his recent post.
The girls at Blok M (to add a further comment to Bulai's post) are much less expensive in their expectations then at the hotel bars. A friend received an unsolicited off of 200k rupes in MyBar, though I didn't see it so I can't vouch for the quality of the looks.
I happen to be extremely picky about looks. Judging from the photos over in the photo area, I am much more picky than other mongers. :-)
So Blok M is very hit or miss. That said, the lookers at BATS, for example, are pricing themselves way out of range.
I overheard a situation in one corner of BATS where a normal-looking guy was buying drinks for one girl. At some point he left the bar. I heard her complaining to her friend that the guy offered her 'only' 300k or thereabouts. She had a mouth like a sailor and was especially insulting to the guy (after he left). It's in the northern part of Jakarta. Backing the exit of Kota trainstation, turn left around the building. Proceed about 200 mtrs till the traffic lights. Sion's church is at the opposite corner. An interesting point you raise, which do you choose Blok M or Kota? It is not out of the question to visit both areas of course but you would need to leave it till night time as transport between the two areas during the day would be hellish (especially in the Niagra like rain we're having right now). Although my favourite form of transport, Busway, could be useful, they are the big orange, airconditioned buses with their own lane running from the stop outside Mercure all the way to Blok M terminal. The journey would be half an hour and at 2500 rps is cheap, be warned though they are packed like the Black Hole of Calcutta between 4 and 7pm.
So anyway what area should you choose? I have to say straight up that I'm a Blok M man myself, but I occasionally wander north to Kota. You are right that Mercure is handy for Lokasari and other 'spas', 'karaoke bars' and 'executive lounges'. The main place usually mentioned here is Teria Ceria, it's in the car park of the Lokasari Mall, (no one ever said Jakarta was conventional). T C is a disco/live band venue and is best visited on a Sunday afternoon where once your eyes have adjusted to the Stygian blackness you will see a mamasan tugging at your sleeve and offering a glum looking young cutie (be careful some might be a wee bit too young). If you choose her or any other, you pay 200,000 rps to go to a back room for an hour, some of the older girls have good techniques but generally the girls don't speak any English and can be a bit unresponsive. You'll be expected to tip the girl, the mamasan and sometimes a little gratuity to the condom guy. You will usually be the only white guy there. Kota caters mainly for the Chinese crowd hence the language difficulties, but don't worry you are usually made feel welcome. Other points to note are that surprisingly not all the girls there are on the game, quite a few visit for the music and aren't interested (actually it may be that they just weren't interested in me you might fare better).
Other places in the area are Millenium, Stadium and 1001, where similar operations go on. I can give no info on the spas, more experienced men than me can fill you in there.
Blok M on the other hand caters for the expats, if you stay in the Melawai, even if you don't, you've got to visit the 6th floor bar, a friendly establishment which, from 11am to 11pm with a shift change at 5, serves cold beer and hot girls. No matter how picky you should find a couple to your taste. It's 300,000 per hour per girl in a backroom or in your own room. Down behind the bus station you will find a dreary looking little street called Jalan Palatehan which has the bars usually mentioned here, currently the best are D's Place at the far end (disco upstairs) and My Bar (around this area the sw's hang out I've never tried any). All the girls in these places are available average price 300,000 all night, but as has been mentioned you can do better. There shouldn't be too much difficulty as they usually can manage some English.

I heard Yayakarta had a Asian/Arab custom (not a likely Al Quaeda target). It lies on the right side of Hayam Wuruk of course, on the "Lokasari" side. I don't know whether they have an agreement with Blue Bird as Mercure has, but in a spot you can always walk a few yards to Hayam Wuruk or Mercure and hail a cab there. There is now a climatised bus service linking Kota to Blok M (one bus stop is right in front of Mercure) but those buses tend to be full at certain hours of the day. Some girls who came to visit me at Mercure told me they now used this new service which they described as cheap and efficient (less than half an hour's ride between Mercure and Blok M compared to up to two hours in a taxi).

Mall mongering is not an urban legend, but it is an artform. One that is very tricky to master. I've done it myself, but could never compare with some of the masters who frequent this forum.
In my opinion you must be able to combine three elements: 1) time, 2) an ability to read the signs and 3) a lot of front. You also need to develop the right local knowledge to know the best times and places...
1) Time: means you can't expect to succeed if you haven't got a few free hours to expend. This means that if you're just in town for a couple of nights (and don't have previous expertise), then forget it. Go to Blok M, Mangga Besar, TC, or any of the other fuckshops and pickup joints discussed in this forum and you'll get what you want in no time at all.
2) The signs: read the body language and eye contact of prospective targets. Clothes, make-up etc are often a big give-away, but some quite demure and modestly dressed women can be looking for it. One sure sign is a woman who is obviously checking out the scene and people, especially bule males. Make eye contact, smile and see what response you get. Many little fucklets hunt in packs, especially younger ones. A very subtle art. I don't claim to be an expert, but I think I can generally pick them.
3) Front: this is the final vital ingredient. You must have the confidence to follow up on your reading of the signs and make the right move. You must be able to do it without looking embarrassed or embarrassing the lady. There's a very good hip bar/lounge/restaurant just one minute walking behind the Mandarin Hotel, on the groundfloor of the Deutsch bank building (or Mercedes building, can't remember), named Cinabar.
Not a mongering spot, but a trendy "rendez vous" of the wealthy local expats and the hip indonesian crowd, and with a reasonnable amount of upmarket models. Some of the stunniest freelancers I know in town go only there, in Blowfish, in Centro or in Embassy (many won't even put no more a foot in Retro, yet some of them who could go there on Wed's ladies nights and on late Fri nights).

You make a very fair point that we don't all have to like the same thing, and I see from your posting number that you've contributed many more posts than me (I can't read them because for some reason the 'search user's posts' function is disabled). However I'm intrigued by this superior pussy concept. I frequently go to Burgundy, it's my girlfriend's favourite spot and I just love spending $10 on strawberrry daquiries for her, I've checked out Retro (I expect the tinnitus to clear up any week now, WHAT?) and I've seen a few of the soap opera actresses hang out in CJ's.
My question is this; what is it about these girls that makes them so special? To me they don't look a lot different from the prettier girls that hang out in My Bar (ok I grant you there are a few right old slappers in Blok M but quite a few little crackers too). The only thing I can see is that they would be a lot higher maintenence, and to my mind the sole reason we're in this hobby is to avoid high cost sex from women who believe themselves to be goddesses, if we wanted that we'd be married.
So can you give us a few examples of how these girls made out in a way that the 300 000 rps girls don't. I know I'm pushing it now but could you post a few pics. Like I said I respect your opinions and seniority and I'm sorry if you've already posted the info but you're making me curious for another side of life.

So we went for dinner at Aphrodite. A light crowd, decent food, really good prices. The place is nice. The girls clearly considered themselves important. Some lookers there but not many girls in general. Maybe it picks up later on in the night.
We relocated to D's place in Blok M. Oh my. The upstairs crowd was generally on the ugly side. One beer and out we went. Some irritating obese old Bules pushing their way through the crowd as if they were kings of the castle. Very pathetic.
Next stop, MyBar. Again, the girls were less than desireable. It got a bit better late in the night, but the crowd was lower on the looks scale then during a visit early in the week. I guess it is hit or miss. More mountain men and other elderly gents that appeared to be on short leave from an oil rig or mine somewhere in-country.

Tiga Puluh has been really good, but only during a short period and for some reasons (Bats closure, great band, ect ...) about two years ago, with a very good blend of pros, part-timers and regulars. Seems it remains there today only the hardline pros, Bangkok-style punters and some of the african dealers who used to hang around in JJ.
CJ is IMO highly recommandable only on Wes ladies night and on Sunday nights, WAY too packed on weekends (but still good).
O'Reilley is closed, it has been transformed and is now named Burgundy.
Try Retro (Crown Plaza Hotel) on Wes ladies nights and on Fri nights (it's a late-spot yet), or any of the hip spots mentionned below like Centro, Monaco, Blowfish, Cinabar, Musro, Embassy, Zanzibar, Mana Lounge, Manhattan, ect ... There you'll be with the upscale regular girlies you could have seen earlier shopping in Plaza Senayan, as with the prettiest upmarket freelancers, part-timers, occasionals or weekenders (and all the some-in-between) in town.
The Kemang area's spots (Salsa, Barbados, Pasir Putih, ect ...), as some places like Kafe Pisa or Jamz, where the crowd is more in the "middle class" range, are also very good, with TONS of regular girlies on weekends nights, and have often a friendlier atmosphere than the trendy joints.
This is only my own schedule, other guys have other favorite joints, and once again, luckily we're not all waiting in line for the same girls in the same places.
Anyway sorry for having been controvertial in my previous post, but IMO comparing seedy shitholes like Lokasari or Blok M joints to those other places is like comparing Vila Mimosa to Cafe Photo ; you know what I mean as a you're regular poster in the Brasil section..

landed on soekarno-hatta on one fine saturday evening. it has been a long while since i was there and the aeroport hasn't changed all that much. this time around i was on truly my own, nobody to handle the logistics.
franticly tried to spot the famous bluebird taxis but none to be found though there were a few wheezing by. finally and reluctantly got into one brown taxi 1st in line at the booth after hanging around for about half an hour or so, furthermore my bag disapeared into that trunk before i could have a chance to protest. the man at the booth shoved a piece of paper on service feedback which quickly snatched by the driver whom declared himself " a good man", i knew this was not gonna be good. got the paper back after making it clear it was for me, not him. there was no "gastor?" (meter) and i was quoted rp150k which i knew was way too rediculous. mercure hotel pick-up service ask for that much while regular airport taxis shouldn't take more than rp80k. i've done my homework but apparently not enough. some heated negotiation took place, insisted on no more than rp100k and asked the good cab driver to keep his hands on the wheel, eyes on the road and cut out the crap. it's not the money (<$10) but the idea of getting ripped off by the cab driver is not very pleasing. he then started driving like a maniac among the reckless jkt drivers. at some point i didn't know if i was gonna end up in the hotel room, hospital or guild of thieves. tried to hold composure throughout ..... the rush hour has begun and welcome to kota. i stayed at sari pan pacific along jl sudirman last time i was in town during my dormant period.
checked into penisula hotel right across lokasari plaza for rp200k/nite instead of mercure as originally planned. can't say much about the hotel room for about $20. i only needed a base not a burj al arab's suite. imediately started talking to the bellboy to dig some infos. and sending out signals. got a contact # of an "event organiser" for safety net with rp10k investment.
had fried chicken frm lokasari kfc and headed out on the search for kartika. at that point, i wasn't sure what it was for certain, mp or karaoke joint etc. a forum member mentioned her location being behind jayakarta tower. thought blue bird drivers know every nook and cranny but i was wrong. got on the rubber heel and circled jayakarta tower without success. it took an ojek driver to locate & get there (rp5k for one way) .... jln kebon jerok 19?? off jln hayam wuruk, definately beyond blue bird's reach. berlian is just few doors away but i had clear objective and mission to accomplish. later found out stadium also located a few blocks away but i wouldn't suggest trying on foot in the nightime.
had a mild pleasant shock .... plenty of ladies in waiting looking very edible. tough time selecting and decided to trust my instinct and put hard earned small time mongering skills acquired elsewhere to use. settled for one with a friendly aura and presentable physique then asked her to choose her own associate instead which she quickly did. off i went up the stairs with wati and arni from evening shift for rp200k each.

Ok, ok things are getting a little bit heated on this and perhaps I should just shut up but I feel I'd like to make a few points. I take Pro at his word that he screws only hot model types and not what he calls ugly kampung girls in Blok M, and matters like this are entirely a question of personal taste. I only wish to put forward a little evidence in the case for Blok M's defence. If you check out jakartablokm.com you'll see pictures from the My Bar calender competition, these girls might not be everyone's cup of tea but I think it's obvious that to call these girls 'ugly' would be unfair. As anyone familiar with the place can confirm these girls are all regulars who can be picked up any week-end night in Blok M.
XXL's point about where the upscale girls come from is also legitimate, maybe they don't all come from Lokasari, but scratch them and you'll find most are kampung girls underneath. I remember at my school in a city in Ireland we all looked down on the country boys, 'culchies' we called them. It took a teacher to ask us how many of us could claim all our grandparents were born in town to shut us up, heck most of us couldn't even claim both parents had been city born and bred. Last night I visited Blok M again and looked at it from Pro's point of view and he has a point, the expat bars are a bit dingey, not half as dingey as the expats themselves though. The barstaff however are the best in town, always friendly, attentive and remembering your name and order with a big smile. Pro is being a bit harsh about the girls though, they are certainly no AMW's (actress, model-whatever) but they are good company, up for a laugh and always ready for uncomplicated fun. This brings me finally (thank God! I hear you mutter) to Menteng's point and I think it has some validity. Pro is clearly blessed with great charm, style, good looks and ready cash, just like me in fact except I'm a fat ugly bastard. Spent Sat. night first at a nice Viet restaurant somewhere in town (no idea where exactly as the driver was handling the logistics), then to BATS.
A fairly good crew of girls at BATS, especially a sighting of the infamous 'Linda'. You'll know her by her good looks and usually wavey-curly hair. Many blokes have signed approval for her talents, though I dont know what the cost range is. The one time I engaged her with a drink, the conversation was so boring, I drifted back to my group of friends. My fatal flaw is that I want intelligent conversation to go along with the later festivities. This severly limits my scooping successes.
The crowd at BATS thinned out noticeably around 12am. This was odd since I'd assumed the shift change took place closer to 1:30, when they un-scooped girls would relocate to Retro or other late-night venues.
At any rate, we relocated to Retro. Although my friends say otherwise, I cannot fathom how well people hook up in Retro. It is much too dark to see the lay of the land. It seems the best vantage point is actually out in the lobby, watching the influx in the well-lit atrium.
Sadly I'm back in the UK so have some time to contribute again. I read Mangga's report on mall hunting in response to a comment from Gentleman88 and just wanted to 100% endorse what he said. From that 40 I can say with very great confidence that 13 of them were "up for it" and I "proved" that by getting the phone numbers of two of them which I'm prepared to pass on to known, regular contributors to validate my story!
On another occasion last week I went to Atrium about 16.00 on Tuesday, I already had a girl "booked " for 22.00 so I was only going to go for something really outstanding if I could find it. I cant help but wonder what all the fuss is about. One man's meat... and all that. Let's just refocus on the primary reason this forum is here - a great resource for all of us to use. I was in Jakarta recently and some of the insights helped while I didn't have time to check out the others properly - it looks like I have to invest more time to learn more about mall hunting:)
I'm sad to say that I did not take full advantage of what Jakarta had to offer and ended up at CJs then 30 for 3 nights in a row. I learned some valuable lessons though:
1. Dont hesitate - if you see something very much to your liking, go and find out if she's with anyone - do not assume from appearances (made that mistake on the first night). I still found someone acceptable but I could cry when I think of what was lost;(
2. Dont be shy - ask direct questions. Some girls are out there looking for expats for longer term relationships. Dont end up buying drinks and then finding out much later (yes, yes, mistake on the second night). But as is clearly usual in Jakarta I still found someone else who was very acceptable.
3. Keep a look out. Saw a stunner but another guy got there before me. Initially thought all was over but for some reason she rejected him. Immediately jumped in:D
4. Buy a bottle in duty free and keep it in the hotel room - saves a lot in drinks costs. You spend enough in the bars and clubs - no need to donate to the hotel too!
Incidentally, thanks to Menteng for guiding my taxi driver - I'm sorry we didn't get to meet. I swear I saw a couple of guys that put me in mind of you and Bulai in 30 on Thurs night.

I neglected to mention what I paid during my sojourn in Jakarta. I have to apologise in advance to Bulai and Menteng as I did not stick entirely to their price structure albeit cheaper than some others paid, I'm sure.
So to summarise:
Girl no.1 - 300k + 50k taxi - good but as mentioned earlier, I was distraught because of my own stupidity and probably settled for someone a bit too pro in approach. Her friend who was with my colleague was probably more my taste. Almost took her when my colleague chucked her out because he needed the sleep but I prefer them fresh (at least for the day:D).
Girl No.2 - 400k - couldn't help it, the GFE quotient kicked in and she knows how to make you feel good in the shower before and after. She's not a real COF person though - didn't feel comfortable. I almost succumbed to a condomless shower screw before I came to my senses after the 'wake up call' morning round.

this report from late november.
the bluebird taxi seemed not to know where block m was. he drove past this darkish lane with abundant sws - many looked ****. finally found this bar (forgot the name) that was pretty much the dumps but full of pastey white-asses. these guys looked like the kind you'd find outside a check-cashing store in the states - only these were white. smoke-filled bar with the indo hookers dancing by themselves oogled by these losers. great! hate to be a passive smoker, so i split real fast! as i was walking down the wooden steps saw 2 sws walking up. how much? 150k st, 350 lt - whatever, 500k for 2 lt if i like what i get, i said. which hotel, they wanted to know as i rushing down. mandarin o. they said okay + plus taxi.

I had problems on occasion trying to get the taxi to Blok M bars. I tried all the popular bars name and of course always mentioned Blok M. Sometimes it just easier to tell them Passarya and Blok M and work it from there or Ahmbara Hotel. Either way you will be very close. Sometimes they will stop and ask another taxi driver on the street where you are trying to go. Once you know how to get there from those spots you can guide them to the actual street on your own. I also started taking business cards from the bars on the block to show them as a backup. It only worked half the time so either they know it or they don't alot of times. Actually sometimes we just say the bar name too correctly in english terms that they don't understand what we are saying. Dorman - just to be clear on the PI statistics - I may have misled you (and others) inadvertantly - when I said 40 per cent were "candidates" I meant you would consider having them - not that they would necessarily consider having you ! Regarding timing, certainly there is no point in hunting before 12 but 13.00 to 14.00 is OK albeit at the "start" of the optimum time. Based on my "statistical analysis" you should be able to find up to 13 around that time. Better if you can extend your time slot. A good place is Excelso in PI. Thanks for the advice. I understand what you are saying, but there were times not even the silverbird drivers knew those blok m bars. I think most do so it's not usually an issue with them. When I suggest using an accent at times is really just trying to say the bars or other landmarks possibly the way an indonesian person might which can sound radically different from what we would say it in english terms. If I were to say it differently, I always stress the Blok M part if that's where I want to go. If it doesn't make sense to them, then it's a no go anyway. I have been posting the occasional rant and thought it was time to give my 2 cents worth regarding the possibility of hooking up in the malls of Jakarta. better late than never, here's my trip report from my recent 9-day visit to jakarta. thanks to chalky26, bulai69 and pete33 for their advice and help.
by the way, the old "rtff" advice held here. although it took me awhile, i was able to get a good picture of the jakarta scene by reading through the posts here on wsg. one item to add - it was not until i got on site that i realized that many locations - lokasari plaza, kartika, berlian, the stadium - were all in the same neighborhood, within walking distance of each other.
i will break jakarta down into different segments:
1) never made it to bats at the shangri-la, or to blok m.
2) freelancers - chalky & bulai69 provided several phone numbers, including some girls whose pictures are posted here on wsg. unfortunately, most of them ended up as "leave a message" which i did, but never received a call-back from any of them. did get through to one young lady, who seemed suspicious and reluctant to visit me at my hotel (mandarin oriental), so that was a dead end.

The exchange rate I have is NZD158-160 = 1,000,000 Indonesian rupiah. The rates in Jakarta quoted by most members is 180k - 250k (NZD29 - 40) ST which is not as short as it is in NZ, and 200 - 500k (NZD32 - 80)overnight. Now the cheapest half decent FR I saw in the NZ forum was NZD80 ST with plenty around NZD100 - 160, and even NZD60for a 15min BJ. I think you'd better redefineyour concept of cheap.

I don't consider $33-43 US that expensive. Usually the encounters are not just a one shot affair, but can be anywhere from 2 hours, to all night. For one hour or so encounters, 200-220k was the norm. Certainly you can find cheaper if you look around. I had no problem finding 100k girls in Bali, but they certainly weren't Jakarta quality.

Last night I went to a recently re-opened bar on the top floor of the building next to Hotel Losari, opposite the Plaza blok M, to have a drink and check if there's some fun to be had over there.
The new management is really going for it: a renovated cafe, karaoke rooms and a resto. Unlike the cafe's in jl Palatehan the room where the bar is, is very spacious and there are many sittees available, so there's a very relaxing atmosphere over there. Not to mention the terrace outside where you can enjoy your night al fresco. The beer is also excellent. Good chilled and tingling in the mouth when you take a sip and not like the beers I've had last time at D's Place that tasted like coloured ice-water.
Live music is provided every night, with amateurs performing before 10 pm. After that a professional band takes over. Wednesday night: oldies but goldies.
I was lucky yesterday, because only at thursday nights sexy dancers perform. And guys, unlike what I've seen at Stadium and jl Palatehan, the tops go off!!
Now the interesting part for us, the girls. Not so many girls yet, but the managers assured me that it will change. After all, it was only the 3rd night after the re-opening. But! I don't know about the other hotels, but Ambhara is across the street from the Passaraya Mall which has a food court, a bunch of restaurants, a movie complex, bowling and billiards. Plus if you are planning on going to Blok M bars like D's and My Bar you can walk there in about 2-4 minutes depending on how fast you walk. It might not be obvious on how to get there from the hotel. You might need a little guidance getting there but it is a really easy walk although it might look scary for a newbie at night. The toughest part is a little block stretch that is a little dark by the bus station but it's pretty short like 30 seconds at most. You might want to try to find it during daylight to learn it first. The taxis outside these bars at Blok M are like vermin and you have to negotiate your fares from there. You can walk to the other end of the street otherwise to try and find a taxi to use it's meter. If you go to the discos that are in the hotels like CJ's and BATS, then they will always have SilverBirds and some BlueBird taxis available that will use their meters at latenight with no negotiating needed.
The Ambhara is nice. The location is made for a newbie. It's girl friendly. The gym is ok. You are going to need a taxi no matter what. But on the nights you want to keep it simple and cheap, you have the Blok M bars that you need not bother with a taxi. During latenight, traffic is usually not an issue. I can't say the same during the day, so if you are there for business you might need to account for travel time during the day as Jakarta is a pretty big city.

I stayed at the Ambhara for a couple of days this summer and thought it was decent, but nothing special. I got a rate about 450k, if I recall correctly, from one of the airport booking places. I may have indicated pricing in my Sept reports.
You can take a walk on the wildside, and just cross the street without using the overpass. More fun that running with the bulls!

The Ambhara Hotel is nice but nothing special. The rooms are small, but the amenities are more than decent. Don't book through the hotel or you will pay alot more. Somehow someway you have to try and book through a travel agent whether it be at the airport hotel reservations booth or at an actual agency. They seem to always have the best rates for all the hotels. I didn't stay there at first so booked after the fact I was there. I believe Ambhara has a special weekend rate. I believe when you book through an agent it's almost 50% difference.
I stayed at the Losari before. I don't handle noise and mosquitoes well so I had problems with the hotel. The rooms were only ok. But of course you pay a lot less.
If you come out of the Ambhara Hotel and then face Passaraya you will see the bus station just to the right of Passaraya at least during the day. You want to get to the other side of the bus station opposite Passaraya. I guess it's about 75 feet wide to the other side. Take the street down the side of the bus station. It will take you to a little street which is where bars like My Bar, Dee's Place, Top Gun, Sportsman, and Oscar's are. Just make the right onto the street and you are there. The sidewalk and road have more than their fair share of broken concrete so be careful. At the other end of the street, it's only one long block long, is where sometimes at night you can find a metered taxi willing to use it's meter at times. It looks alot different at night vs. day.
I hope that makes sense Softlover. It seems impossible to negotiate rates with the hotel desk even if they know you can get a better rate through a travel agent.

I stayed only in Grand Hyatt and Shangri-La. Grand Hyatt is located next to Plaza Indonesia. So if you are going to explore the malling scene, this is the place to be. It is right on the Transjakarta bus line so in case of traffic you get an easy access to Blok M and Sarinah for shopping. There are plenty of good places to dine around the hotel as well. You won't have any problems bringing visitors but the hotel does not really have an inside place with girls. That's probably the only bad thing about it.
Personally I prefer Shangri-La for its services. The staff is great and I always get a warm welcome there. The pool is excellent. The hotel has a famous BATS in the basement and it is relatively close to Transjakarta bus line. However, the location is pretty isolated and there is always traffic on the street in front of the hotel -you lose at least fifteen minutes just to get out.
As far as I remember Grand Hyatt was slightly more expensive than Shangri-La. So if you're new in Jakarta and wouldn't have too much time to monger, I would recommend Shangri-La for BATS. If you're willing to spend more time for amateures, Grand Hyatt would be the choice for its proximity to Plaza Indonesia.

After being a good student at the massive info collected by you all, I finally utilized this knowledge in my first foray. A previous effort to find the mentioned places at Pangeran Jayakarta failed, I could not locate the named places using the posted descriptions.
Finding Kartika and Barlian was fairly easy, after a breakfast meeting in Kota, parking was a breeze in hayam wuruk, I arrived shortly before 11 AM (parking is only allowed until 2 PM there). Looking into the small street I immediately saw the signs of Barlian and Kartika. Because Kartika was mentioned by mighty spearsman very positively, I chose to try Kartika first. My previous experience in the morning caused me to except a lazy morning with about 4-5 girls just starting the day.
Imagine my surprise to enter a room with about 30 smiling friendly girls, one of them directly approaching me. As she was my type, not too fat or skinny, round “moon-face”, I said yes and she took me to a soap-smelling room. After undressing, she soaked the fake-leather wrapped bed with soap and started the massage, which was ok, considering the kind of time-prolonging kneading I know from my “pre-WSG” days.
Then she bathed me and herself, in the process cleaning the appendage to be busy in the next minutes, and after drying me with the towel she started stimulating me orally, then putting on the condom and proceeded to ride me. We finished with 15 minutes to spare, the girl used the time to brush her teeth very thoroughly and then bathe. The room cost 200k and I gave her 100k tip. It seems there is a price hike in effect as of January 2005, probably due to the falling dollar. It's a curious policy that you need to go through an agent to get a low rate; I thought this was limited to Thailand and that Indonesia was different.
As an aging newbie I liked Ambhara because it is close to various kinds of action, and I hate taxis. I will stay only two nights and move on to Yogya, Malang etc. Not quite as hot, hobbywise, but you never know.

Actually, the price Rp. 200.000,- is for the room including service. She must be very happy got a big tip from you. Generally i give Rp. 20k until Rp. 50k for the tip. If the service is bad i do not give any tip at all.

Don't be crazy and just go to Kartika. You made the trip out there and you have all the info. Go for it. For the price and tip you paid at Kartika, you can get a sweety to stay with you all night. Also, enjoy the art of selling by the ladies at Kartika and wait a little bit before heading up to the room.

Ambhara is a 4 star hotel in Blok M area. But, it is one of the expensive 4 star hotel.
One thing I noticed when I checked in, was that the star rating displayed on the wall (3 star, I think), did not match the star listing from Kaha (Rated 4 star). It was still nice, however. It usually only has SilverBird taxi's, but if there's a BlueBird around, they will try and snag it for you.
You will save BIG money by booking at the airport/train station booking places (Kaha, etc). I didn't like some of the preferential pricing (230k for local, 300k for Middle Eastern and 430k for all others), since I paid the highest price. Some places, (Atrium) had the same prices, so I tend to give my business to those.
As others have mentioned, if you have a local's ID you might be able to get the local rate. I have a copy of a local ID, but not sure if I would try to use it or not.

I'm not familar with this hotel, but I did take a picture of the price lists at the airport. I'll be home by Sunday, so I can see if I can blow the picture up and check.
Not all hotels are listed, but the price savings *is* dramatic. I almost always have the first night or two booked wherever I go, since I don't like surprises, but in this case, it will cost you a lot more. I'd check for availability (not a holiday) at the hotel you are interested in.

I went to the Aryaduta for New Year's Eve and the band announced it was their last night. Originally my girlfriend and I went to Musro we had booked the all inclusive dinner and party package - big mistake. We were the only people eating in a vast empty ballroom while twenty bar and waiting staff hovered around totally incapable of taking a drink order. Curiously all the tables were reserved but by 11pm, only about thirty mostly Chinese patrons had shown up. I asked a waitress what the score was and she said it would be packed later as all the tickets had been sold, they would probably arrive at 1am after 'Happy New Year', eh? That didn't sound like much of a party.
We left and got a bajaj down to Aryaduta, that looked comical; big bule and pretty little Indonesian girl in her best party frock crammed into bajaj chuchugging slowly through the throngs of hooting motorscooters. Anyway Aryaduta looked a lot better decision, the crowd was bigger but oddly when she and I arrived in blowing our paper trumpets we got rather sour glances from some of the bules at the bar, fer chrissakes cheer up folks it's New Year's Eve!
Of the few girls in Musro none looked like players, different in Aryaduta though. One girl there with her 'husband' gave me the eye straight away. I swear I know her from somewhere and judging by the sly little smiles and glances the feeling was mutual. At midnight she hugged her husband then came straight over to me and planted a kiss and wished me a happy new year. She got talking to my girl and told her a lot of info about herself most of which I suspect was BS. I'm convinced we have a past but for the life of me I can't remember when it was.
There were a couple of other chicken there too, one of whom I recognised from Blok M, she smiled over clearly forgetting that the one time we'd been together it had not been a happy occasion. The evening ended off in traditional style when one other chiclet, clearly 'tired and emotional' and resentful at being let down gently by the band's drummer had a screaming match with him in the gents toilet, very entertaining certainly but unfortunately caused me to inadvertently sprinkle my shoes while watching.
Anyway a fun night was had by most, well not the poor German guy propping up one end of the bar, he appeared to get more and more morose with every beer as he slowly slunk into himself. I have to say that the famous Musro was a complete dud, I'd give it a miss folks, Oscars on a wet Tuesday night has more atmosphere.
Well have a happy New Year, for those of you reading this in the US right now; man, you're all just so last year!

In regards to booking through a travel agent or at the hotel reservations desk at the airport. When you do this, they will pretty much ask for you to pay upfront for the room right there, and cash is the preferred payment, so it could mean you need to pull quite a bit of money out to pay for a room in a really nice hotel. I don't know if Jaimito experienced the same thing as I did in regards to payment. Also, not booking prior to arrival runs the risk that the hotel you want might be booked. I had this problem for some reason last time and must have run into some type of holiday situation or pre ramadan deal. The thing is eventually you will get a hotel, it just might not have been in the exact location you were looking for. If you have to pay cash up front, it's not likely at least for me that I would book for more than 3 days since it's hard to pull that much rupiah anway. If you are only talking about two days and you want a certain hotel, I don't know if I would worry about the actual savings by going this route. Booking thru a web based hotel service will most likely be cheaper or at least the same price as the hotel will quote. You can always extend your stay later by going to a travel agent or even one of the branches of the same business as the hotel reservation desk at the airport and pay the discounted rate. It takes a little time but can save people some money.

I believe you can book a room online but you must pay at an actual branch at an Indotel. It's explained a little here and says they will take a credit card. When I was there they discouraged it, I don't know if someone was pocketing something or they didn't want to go through a potential hassle of charging you the small percentage the credit card companies take off the top. Also looking at their website, you might not see all the available types of rooms they offer for a hotel.

I nearly achieved my goal of actually scoring in a Mall this evening, I don't think it counts however in that the initial meeting took place at the top of Jalan Palatehan. I'd left D's Place at 5.30pm and was strolling towards Pasaraya, I'd just received a message from the War Office telling me I had to return to base, so I decided to head to the Melawai 6th Floor to get a quick and dirty before heading home.
Anyway just before I entered Blok M Plaza what do I spy but a vision, she was wearing a short black mini skirt the type that was called a Ra Ra skirt in my youth and an off the shoulder tee shirt, she had blue 'soft lenses' and cinnamon coloured hair. Not unusual I grant you in My Bar at 1am but this was early in a Sunday evening, she was accompanied by four dowdier consorts. Well I caught up with her and we all agreed to go to Pasaraya food court for ice cream. Once there the sundaes were ordered and I got her hand phone number. Like I said I'd claim it as Mall hunt but for the technichality of not actually meeting in the Mall and not following up straight away (I had no hotel room booked).
I was in a hurry and went on to have a new year's party with four girls in Melawai, this was the usual good fun and in no way marred by having to step around the rat sitting in the middle of the corridor on the way to the room. I pointed the offending rodent out to one of the guys working there but he just looked at me as if to say "Oh the rat? Sure he's always here at this time!"
Just one observation though, like I said the girl was provocatively dressed for that time of day and as we progressed down through the Bus Station out the other end and into the Pasaraya the hoots and catcalls from the street vendors and passersby grew cacophanous. It in no way bothered her, she's 20 going on 35 if you ask me, her poise never faltered, her gaze never wavered, and she maintained the polite conversation of a dowager duchess at a garden party. She processed through the vulgar mob with the magnificent serene dignity of an East Indiaman tea clipper slicing through the Java Sea. I, on the other hand, didn't fare so well; my normally roseate complexion darkened to a deep scarlet, a very attractive sheen of sweat beads sprouted profusely on my forehead and upper lip and my dialogue consisted mainly of stammering non sequitors.

Yup, the Tavern Bar at Aryaduta has always been nice. You get both type of crowd there. The families and also the pickups. The families normally sit in the wing before the bar as you enter tavern along the aisle and all the other action with the girls happen at the far end after you cross the band and the bar.
I was also there on New Years eve. The band which played there and has been playing for over 3 years now is the Music Makers Band from Bali and has won quite a few fans and regulars. In fact the male singer with a deadly resonant voice, Clif, is the cousin brother of Kris Dayanti the Indonesian music Diva,and just freaks out on Brick on the Wall of Pink Floyd. I dont know how many bands in Jakarta sing it so well.Unfortunately, he did not sing it on 31st December. And the band is now going to be back on February1st. The drummer whom you mentioned is Nick.
The Aryaduta Management keeps giving them a break once in about 4 to 6 months and you normally see the crowd dwindling away and find only some sw's hanging out there without customers. And then the management realises they need them back and get them back from Bali, and place an ad in Jakarta post and the crowd is back. Mostly you will find regulars there, who come there only to listen to this band. The moment any other band comes there, the crowd is gone. They rather go to Amigos or Stix or Hard Rock Cafe.
And the girls are also regulars there and you normally get them between 300K and 500K for LT.

I didn't like Kaha's "attitude" at the airport, so I picked another co. Might have been Indo. (Bright orange booth). I paid for 3 nights first, then booked more nights later at a train station. Then finally booked a couple of nights at the Kaha office across from Atrium Mall.
I found some ATMs would let me take out more than others and just built up a little cash before I got to JKT. For the kind of price savings you get, I don't mind.

they have also been slowly renovating the rooms. i think the renovated rooms start at $100 us a night and are quite good. the original rooms are ok but do show their age. the problem with all rooms at the hotel is a rather small bathroom.
i was interested to read the comments on the tavern. it was once a very popular place. an early version of bats or tiga puluh. whenever i go in there now it seems very quiet.
Jaimito raises a good point about ATMs in Indonesia. The first thing to check out is whether they will actually accept your card or not; many don't. Look out for the Visa or Mastercard signs on them. The next problem is the paltry amount of cash they will allow you, some only allow you 600 000 rps per go, you can maybe do it three or four times but when you look at your statement you'll find you've been hit for $6 every transaction, a not inconsequential levy added to your night's entertainment. For my money the best are Citibank machines, quite apart from them being extremely polite they usually allow you to take out 3m rps per go. There's one in Pasaraya, it's just around the corner from the line of other ATMs, next to the Marks & Spencer door, it pays out 100 000 notes and there's a very courteous security guard there too.

Spent 2 months at the Atlet in March/April and found it quite good. The best rooms are on the executive floor where they have been recently renovated, also free drinks (alcoholoic) and snacks each evening. Certainly girl friendly, had a long term GF stay a few weeks, and a few other short timers stop by.
Quite well located, only a short taxi ride to Mulia, Tiga Pulu etc.
Dorman - gw pikir tidak! Read the signs and go for it! All you need then is the confidence that you will NEVER EVER get a blatant rejection of the form you would get in the west. The commonest "rejection" is that they give you an hp number (to get rid of you maybe) and the worst is a polite smile, "sorry' and slow walk away. I've had many rejections (albeit low percentage) so I really do what I'm talking about on this subject!
Any girl action in Alila Hotel? This hotel has broadband internet access and a safe in-room which meet my two important requirements for a room. I can get it for $63.00 US per day at AsiaRooms.com including breakfast, not bad at all.

For my money the best are Citibank machines, quite apart from them being extremely polite they usually allow you to take out 3m rps per go.
The Citibank ones weren't too bad. I found some other bank ones that only gave 500k! It was strange that all ATMs from a given bank didn't give out the same amount at all locations. For instance at Atrium, one bank (Lippo?), only gave out 1 million, but at other locations, gave out 2 million.
I think Citibank only gave out 1500k in some locations (Bali airport). It's important to have a ATM card that doesn't sock you too hard on withdrawals. Paypal seems to be decent at $1 a withdrawal.
Also be careful if you bring dollars to convert. Many places won't touch certain 1996 issued 100 dollar bills.

In fact the girls line up got changed twice. The original girls were with them from Bali for quite some time. One of them got married to a Brit and moved to UK and the other one joined an American Band. That speaks volumes of her talent. Then came in 2 Jakarta girls and they were sacked by the band itself within 2 months. And this happened when the lead male singer, who incidentally owns the band, figured out that these 2 girls were trying to sleep around with a few customers. ( some values eh!!!).
Now they have one singer from Bali who is the wife of the key board player and the other 2 are twins from Maluku.
No I was'nt the German guy. I am Brit. I was sitting at the farend with a javanese girl. Yes I saw the girl whom you mentioned doing the antics over there. Any way, I go to tavern for some good music only when this band plays and to have their famous chicken hotstone.. In case of any other band is playing there, I skip it. That's becoz any other replacement band has been very pale in comparison to the Music Makers. Never picked any girl there. That's becoz I know almost all of them. In case I do need to pick up, I go to CJ's or D's place. In case I feel like having a big structured girl then I hit Deleila. I do venture into Tiga Kuda too. But feel more comfy with fee lancers.

It's not in the vicinity of night action as far as I know it - you'd have to get in a taxi to go to places like Ds place MyBar (Jalan Palatehan - near Block M), CJs (Mulia Hotel), BATS (Shangri-La). For me, tiga puluh was better than CJs but it's highly subjective. Enjoy!

Hi - steady on! I didn't say that every time you get a number it's a brush off! Of course getting a number is a result - I just mean that it can be a way of brushing you (or anyone else) off "nicely"
On the subject of malls, I went to Atrium yesterday at 11.00, went up escalator and 80% of the way up I noticed a "possibility" coming down the other side. Then I saw an Indonesian old guy, "kucing", bearing down on her. So I rushed up and down the other side, elbowed him out of the way and wham! Straight back to my hotel no problem. Photo's to follow when I'm back in UK. But once again, the "signs" were very very subtle indeed. "Even I" was only really convinced by the "kucing" in hot pursuit.
Same night as I went to Business Centre in Meridien I noticed a phenomenon I've reported before: near the lifts on Lt 1 there are 4 seats. Waiting was a young girl who I spoke to. She was waiting for her friend who was being fucked by someone upstairs. I later saw them both leave and they were excellent; only reason I didn't go for it was that I was waiting for my girl friend for the night. She did arrive "on time" (45 minutes after she said) so I couldn't have done anything.
Same night again, much later, as I left my room a woman in the room opposite came out. She was from Bandung, staying on some government business. We passed polite comment and off she went. AT 2am I heard something being pushed under my door and it was a note from this woman saying "nice to meet you, come to me in my room opposite if you like"!!. Sadly she was nowhere near my "standard" but had this happened in UK where opportunities for middle aged business men are somewhat fewer than in Jakarta I would have been in there. I guess this kind of thing happens to Brad Pitt and the like all the time - but you don't need to be Brad Pitt in Jakarta!
Must get back into action - I'm in new internet in PI near Excelso - a good hunting place in itself judging by the girl sat next to me. She has just now agreed to come for coffee in Excelso ! This place is the ultimate!!

I'm one of the many lurkers on this forum, with but a few old posts to my credit, but the dialog between you two inspires me to write.
I would have to say that while I haven't had quite the same number of spectacular experiences as Bulai, I don't think he is exxagerating the possibilities.
Regarding "humiliating" brush-offs, I think the most common way that a girl will reject your advance is simply by refusing to meet your eye when it's obvious that you are staring at her. And that happens, to me at least, quite often. But it's hardly a mortifyingly embarrassing experience.

I hear what you're saying Gonzo about the smiles but I'm not convinced that's entirely correct.
