All love motels are either for a 4-hour rental or an all-night rental. Not every hotel is available for all-night. None are available all night on a weekend. If they have two posted rates, the low one will be for 4 hours, and the high one will be for all night. Yes, they require ID if you walk up. If you drive they very rarely ask for ID, as your car is your "guarantee. " The places are set up with private garages and rooms, usually above the garage, some to the side. When you leave somebody will check the room for damage or dead hookers (it's happened). Driving in Tijuana is an acquired skill, as most traffic signs seem to be suggestions, rather than rules.
But the worst thing is that you have to come back across to the USA. Unless you have SENTRI (and you wouldn't have it on a rental) you're looking at anywhere from an hour, to three or four hours, waiting in line. It depends on the day and time you choose to cross and if the migrants have recently stormed the border. That really screws up the crossing times.

You have your CBP account, right? And you can log in and see that your SENTRI / GE status is green and approved, right?

They book something they're hoping to deliver and scramble at the end to find you someone.
