I've been to RA with a Carioca friend of mine and he is really careful even coming out of the place to find a taxi at the little corner bar. Well I've been living in Rio for nearly three months now. Less the 2 weeks I went to Ottawa for the music festival. Settled in, even my Portuguese is slowly getting better.

Great advice.
One good thing about Hellp being slow is that you can actually get a good look at their bods, even while inside. A few months ago, you couldn~t walk 2 steps, it was literally body to body, much less check out the girl.

I spent a few days in Rio in the middle of May and in early July – basically at the beginning & end of a 2-month Brasil trip. My 3rd and 4th visit to the “beautiful city” in less than two years. The following are just general comments, not specific reports about individual girls.

(1) L´uomo was great in May - line-up was fantastic. In July things were a bit more quiet, line-up not as good (but by no means “bad” - this is L´uomo after all) with several of my favorite girls being on vacation.

Most nights they have live (Brasilian) music – Tuesday & Friday it´s Pagode, if I recall correctly. Facilities are good and clean. Reception, lockers and bar are all on the first floor, but showers are next to the sauna which is on the third floor! But there´s an elevator.

The bar is fairly large, square-shaped room with couches / tables at the edges, which makes it much less crowded than 4x4.

40 minutes is 180 R$, one hour 200 R$ (was raised 1 July form 160 / 180 respectively). Early bird special just like 4x4 – if you go to a room before 5pm, no entrance fee (but no free drinks either…).

I liked Cancun a lot, not as noisy, smoky etc as 4x4. Girls similar to the ones in 4x4, only less in number (around 30 or so).

(4) Help: I hardly go there anymore, too many other good options. I went one time in July with a newbie to show him the ropes – it was very slow, as commented here by other members. But in August our Italian friends should arrive in Brasil in droves….

(5) Centro Apartments: A big thank you and thumbs-up to Sperto for his outstanding list/map of centro apartments! Last time (December) I had only been to Belprazer (Av. Rio Branco 185 / 2114) which was good. Now thanks to Sperto I had much more information, so I checked out various other apartments. The best ones in terms of girls/service/price were Av. Rio Branco 156 / 3320 and 2622, Av. Rio Branco 185 / 1703, Av. Presidente Vargas 590 / 1005 and Belprazer (185 /2214) mentioned above. Prices all 60 to 80 R$ for an hour. (6) Barbarella – no good. In May I went one night just to check it out, I´d never been. Girls were 30 or older, not ugly, but not especially beautiful either. Mostly white girls, blondes, less morenas and mulatas. 2 or 3 girls pole-dancing. The main point of the place of course is getting clients to spend money, so girls constantly ask you to buy drinks. I just chatted a bit with a few girls, was quoted 500 R$ for take-out. I just smiled and asked for the ´real´ rate, what clients pay, to which she said 300R$. So they ask 500 & settle for 300.

After paying my bill (total damage 65 R$=26 €), I left at 11.55pm, caught a bus back to my place (near posto 4) and met my ´date´ at 1am, with whom I had a wonderful time until noon next day.

In fact I had forgotten all about how bad Barbarella was, it´s coming back to me now as I write this. I can´t really understand why people would go to this place – with so many other options in town, or even just in Copacabana. Girls no better than Help, worse in fact (imho), overpriced drinks, no atmosphere etc. My advice: spend your money somewhere else.

I just got back from a wednesday to sunday Rio trip and its time to write the report. Overall, I had an amazing trip, great weather, great garotas and no problems whatsoever. I also think I met the future Mrs. Rock Harders, a ridiculously gorgeous non-pro bartender/student. I'm back in Buenos Aires and its cold and rainy, and I feel depressed. Tomorrow I head to Medellin, so that should quickly be cured.

One thing which I did find surprising was your comments on honesty between Arg e Brazil. I have spent a lot of time in BA, Arg and even more time in Rio. I think people from Arg and pretty much all of South America are less honest than people from western countries, a lot less honest. However I find Brazilians, particularly from Rio as being even worse in this respect. Try doing business in Rio, everyone will have their dick out trying to fuck you.

Buenos Aires is the wild west in terms of doing business, the most corrupt place outside of Africa. Rio cannot possibly be any worse; in Buenos Aires every single provider, 99% of the employees, the police, city inspectors, the unions, all try to steal from you, hell even the garbage men try to hit you up for bribes. The red tape to get a business started in Brasil is worse than in Argentina, but once you are up and running (according to my research on brasil, experience in argentina) things run smoother in Brasil, less labor law issues, etc. I'll take the better weather, nicer people and (marginally) greater productivity of Rio along with the limitless third world bullshit that I already deal with in Buenos Aires. In terms of my apartment and BBing experiences, I report what happened, without bias, nothing more, nothing less, and as always YMMV.

I have been making some limited rounds in the area and am a little upset with myself for not spending more time in places like Erotika. I am interested that you had this experience. It has been a long, long time since I was there, at least ten years, but the last time I did go, I had a similarly great experience. A spinner from Fortaleza with a lot of Indian ancestry. Beautiful and total GFE as you describe. After a great night, she left and said she would come back and she did. Feira de Norte is not for everyone. But if you have any inclination at all to dance and are not shy about making a bit of a fool of yourself, you will be exposed to more pussy than you can imagine at Feira de Norte. And probably for free.

For those not familiar, Feira de Note takes place in Sao Cristovao. You can see it on the way into town from the airport on the right hand side. Kinda looks like a football stadium. They also have two large stages where there is live music that alternates. Of course the live music promotes dancing. Ask one of the employees, you go into the back room, run your credit card and can get cash. Safer than trying to hit the ATMs. The ATMs that are open late will mostly restrict your withdrawals to like R$100 anyway.

For those not familiar, Feira de Note takes place in Sao Cristovao. You can see it on the way into town from the airport on the right hand side. Kinda looks like a football stadium. Basically, it's a fair that runs Wednesday thru Sunday (I think) and features countless small pavilions and kiosks with food and trinkets. It is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 11PM (but you have to enter before 8PM). It opens early on Friday and basically does not close until Sunday.
The shape is actually in the shape of the hats they wear in the north east, not easy to tell but it is.
A few weeks ago one of the food stands ran my credit card 3 times, so now only use my brazilian debit card or cash.
I find it best to go with a group of family or friends, it is more a family atmosphere but there are lots of singles.
Not everyone there is great looking, but there are a lot of locals, in fact mostly locals, probably 99%. but a fun place and I go about 2 times a month or more.

I have been there, and I had a blast with my brasilian friends. I danced forro ( very similar to a combination of salsa and merengue ). Drank like a fish and ate like a horse. This place has great food. (try the tapioca with chocolate or dulce de leite, corn on the cobb, try all the meats from the north ) *Important to note that as a group we were watching each others back.

Before going, many people had warned me to watch out for people popping stuff into your open container, and for pick pockets as well. There's no guarantee on anything, but if you do termas for both top and lower price range you will have an awesome experience and it saves you haggling. If it is your first time you will prob make mistakes - just make the successes outweigh them and there's loads of opportunities to do that.

My suggestion is go to 4x4 for your 'stunner'. the place is an experience that epitomises a side of Rio unknown anywhere else in the world.

You could go there daytime and, even if you taxi there, you could go early to get your whereabouts and maybe a nice bite to eat first. When you go back, one of the main (good) cheap 'n' nasty termas is in a continuation of the same street, other side of the main boulevard. (Sperto's map will help you.) It's entrance number 85 on Rua Buenos Aires.

BA 85 is on the south side of the street whereas 4x4 is on the north side. Walk past anyone hanging around and up the narrow spiral steps next to the dirty metal grille of the elevator. Several floors of girls. The second floor has cuties but the conditions are exceedingly gross and uncomfy. Other floors have cheap but clean cubicles.

You mention VM but also that it's your first trip and you only have a week.VM is best as a place to hang out once you are acclimatised. If you drive up in a taxi not knowing the game you may have an enjoyable evening but you will also risk looking like a plonker. I've gathered a lot of info and read many post about the famous but shanty looking VM. P.S. One thing that happened at Help which was kind of strange was being shorted change by about R$15. The women who work the drink ticket booths have been there awhile and I would like to think it was an honest mistake because it was so slow. She is used to rapid-fire exchanges. You can stop her in the street, stop her in one of the alleyways, stop in one of the casas (bars in each) or best just catch her eye and smile (yeah, bulshit with her).

She'll lead you to the person, usually behind the bar, who takes the cash, doles out the condoms, and keeps the record for each girl. You pay at the counter then go to the rutting area (rabbithole) attacherd to that bar.

The girl gets the whole 20R, it's just more convenient usually for them to keep bank for her there till she goes home. The room is actually 5R and 1R is for the condom, so you can haggle that off if you want by bringing your own. (Bear in mind it's a miniscule amount so no harm done if you don't. It's better not to tip though, unless the girl was exceptional, and then only 5R. If you want to make her day take her back to your apartment and she will start haggling upward bigstyle). Some casas will try to charge a bit extra (5R) for better rooms or cheek but you can just refuse to pay that usually.

Very occasionally you get a girl who isn't working one particular bar/casa. In which case you can suggest one you like once you know your way around - it's a case of what is cool for her and you. In the real pits bars I sometimes try to get them to go elsewhere anyway - they usually will.

I would seriously consider changing hotel. Leaving aside its ridiculous price, the reception staff are highly likely to raise diificulties. The hotel is near the gay section of Ipanema beach (low index of cuties as compared with Posto 9) and finally behind the hotel, by the square and also towards Copa you get the entry points to 2 favelas, making the areas less salubrious than you would think.

It is slow because of the exchange rate and by far fewer gringos. It is slow because European guys are finally figuring out that most of the best looking girls are now working in their backyard. Many people are worried about the economy (and with good reason).

It was R$60 for admission but I went before 7PM so it was half off. You should be aware that you can get the half-off admission coupon from the website. I personally don't recommend one agency over another as my experiences with the ones I've tried have varied. Most hotels will want to ease in financially on your p*ssy time. 1) If you are staying in Copa, take the metro. It is cheap, safe and fast. Get off at Uruguaiana Station. (see attached).If travelling in to 4x4 by metro another tip is to stand near the door on the right hand side of the train. Yes, it's possible to walk from "Cococabana" to Solarium at nighttime. You can also walk to Complexo do Alemao, sleep on the beach or climb Pão de Açúcar without equipment.

If you look at the map on the Solarium site you'll see that you'll pass some nice green hills. Some of the people living in the settlements on these hills might not have the best intention with a gringo walking alone nighttime at Lagoa. The next day you can enjoy a nice walk on the other side of Lagoa when heading to the Tourist Police in Leblon to report your losses.

I advice you to take a taxi or a bus. It's not a short and safe walk.

Before sunrise is real early, but the photo looks worth it if you have your wits about you.

Personally if I wanted to go down the beach for a photo before that (ie to catch the sunrise) I'd take a bus, quick in and out. There's only a few places I totally relax with a camera outside of a room with a girl. Copa at any time of day or night is not one of them. Same for Lapa - quick look round and plan the shot before getting the gear out. Centro has nice shots early on, and some parts are ok at the weekend, not all. (Can be rather crowded otherwise - eg wait for the lights to get a clear shot of Tiradentes Palace.) Remember you can't wear shorts in many posh museums. I agree with your observations 100%. I knew a guy, first time in Rio, and despite all the warnings, got his camera stolen at the beach next to Sofitel -- early in the morning. It happens every day. Just because you get away with it once does not mean you were not at risk. Some times you are lucky, sometimes, not. No way would I walk to Solarium. Safety aside, it's too damn far. That is what taxis are for!

In general, Rio, unlike some other places, is not necessarily safer when it is quiet. The only time I every got robbed was when the beach was nearly deserted in the afternoon.

Do a search in this thread on "Paris Cafe" and you will turn up several posts. The latest one is 5-27-08 which says it's gone down, earlier ones say it rocks. These things change and also are in the eye of the beholder.

Would appreciate a report if you go. I'll be staying out in Barra next month so will be looking for local activities. I didn't see anything that would make you think it is over priced.

I agree, the pictures of the facilities look pretty nice. Can't believe they don't have some good talent to go with it.

If you are staying in a hotel with a cool concierge or desk clerk, I would just get them to call and see what the story is. They are usually pretty matter of fact about that sort of thing, no problem.

BTW, at this place, I thought I had bad information because the elevator does not go to that floor. Don't be confused by this, just go to the top and look for another elevator. Well worth the search. It looked like there were several such places (not listed in Sperto's guide) but I tried the one from Sperto's list. I have a friend that tells me some of these places open for just a few months and then close and move to another location nearby, maybe the same floor, maybe across the street, whatever. They have people that hand out cards so you can just take that and see what is new. Basic location stays the same, though. He says these places are not legal and if they don't make payoffs they have to move.

Sounds good to me -- it keeps the overhead down so lower price points!

I can't tell you for sure, but I would guess that the cheap casas are mostly closed on Sundays. I only visit centro casas during the week. My weekends are earmarked for regular girls or a quick stop by at VM.

I believe they have swingers nights on the weekends. The best nights to go is Wednesday or Thursday, we went a Friday and a Monday and both sucked.

Barra Da Tijuca is a nice change for a break. It is a very middle class, crime free area about 30minutes ride south of Rio. The drive down the coast road is quite spectacular as is the view to Rocinha, Rios biggest favela (slum) on the way, lock the door when passing through! About 30- 40 girls are there, some were very nice as well. Predominantly locals visit this place but surprising the girls were nice and slim. To session with the girls was nice and cheap R158 for girl and cabine if paid in cash, but look at the price of the drinks carefully, a red bull and vodka R$30, some other drinks were reasonably priced like local capirinha’s $R8, beers are R5, coke etc R4, all are clearly marked on the menu. One more thing, do not pay for any of your bill by credit card, they slug you hard, 30% on top of your bill! I agree with Sperto more or less on this - hardly worth making a special trip into town on weekends. Even for the few hours they are open, the pickings are usually poor in my experience compared to during the week. The opening times seem to vary though. When I was staying in Centro earlier this year you could still catch the likes of BA 113 or the occasional glimmer in Rua Carioca even on some Sundays. I'm not a fan of the multistories (too many elevators, too many address changes, too few women - basically, too much hassle at too high a price when Casarao or BA85 can satisfy me, or a quick look and no time lost if slim pickings) but I wouldn't imagine they'd open at weekends. You've mainly got the lowlife pickings from the market, none of the office crowd that they like.

But if you do go to Centro (some of the casas north of Vargas are def open for a few hours at the weekend but again, much slimmer options on display) and don't get what you want it is only a short bus ride to VM. Buses from Rua Carioca / Pr.Tiradentes (closest) or Vargas or Primero de Marco or the underpass by the shore, whichever is nearest, or take the Metro (though you have a short walk the other end if you do) from Uruguiana or Carioca or Vargas and get off at Sao Cristovao or (nicer) Alfonso Pena.

If you're planning to be in town anyway, then the market atmosphere can be fun - much freer than during the week - and you can get some nice steaks at the barbecues.

I never have had a chance to formally thank you, sir. I read your guide vigrously and printed it and brought it with me my first trip in Dec 2006. I leave in 3 hours for trip number 7, now I speak Portuguese and am a first name basis with 30% of all of the centro and zona sul termas, perhaps not a good thing, but fun as hell, as you know. I've done quite a bit of writing on these topics myself, elsewhere.

Thanks for the info on the Barra and Recreio spots. I just dread that cab ride home at night, eating away at my time. This time of year though, termas are definitely not what they always are and after a few days, I can't wait to get out for that "break" and check out something new. I imagine I would make the day trip to Barra Shopping, and then head over to all these places and make a night of it, and by 12 perfect time to head back out to Helpe or something to close off another legendary night in style, but that 40 minutes back, at night, with the policia, oh well, the price we pay.

I'll come back and give my view as a zona sul and centro vet on those places. Perhaps that girl from the HBO special will be there. She wasn't anything spectacular but would be cool as hell to say "I did that."

Yeah, I might sleep before the next 3 hours prior to my car grabbing me for JFK > MIami, where I have a nice day on the beach with some friends before I get the 11:10 Rio Shuttle... we all know that AA flight too well, we all fight over seat 21H.

On getting to and from Barra, if you're not familiar with it maybe good to remember that it makes a massive difference if you avoid rush hour traffic. Which can be several 'hours' - especially when you get stuck in it.

If you're coming back at night it's not really a problem - quicker than the next morning anyway. It's a long way however you do it but, if you're not sharing a cab fare, it can even make sense to do some early evening Barra Shopping after other things then get the Metro Bus from right outside the Mall. It doesn't make too many stops so is much quicker than the regular bus (it also does the coast route, unlike the ordinary bus), and dropping you at Siquera Campos station in Copa. If you're new to Rio and buses, the Metro Bus looks quite distinctive and is generally 'tourist-friendly' - ie posh and safe.

Even handier (and a tad quicker and it will stop wherever you like) is a minibus.

I think of Barra a bit like Niteroi - nice for a change but a f*ck of a long way. But Niteroi's prettier, friendlier, the shops are cheaper, you can go to the theatre without breaking the bank. Barra to me is like an extension of SAn Diego or Florida (except with the odd wh*re house . . . ;-) )

That's more or less what I've done. You know the bus stops by L'Uomo, outside the Metro in Siquera Campos? here's a big "M" sign to make the Metro Bus stops stand out. And if you are getting the Metro to Siquera Campos for any reason it's easy to ask for a combined ticket* to Barra da Tijuca when you buy your subway ticket. (Otherwise buy when you get on board - they have change - withing reason.)

There are two or three stops in Barra, but for me the Barra Shopping one keeps it simple. It's quite a nice area if you come out of the mall late, with roadside snacks that look healthier than the ones in Copa if you do such things lol.

One thing - when you're getting the Metro bus from Siquera Campos, do make sure you're in the right queue for Barra (the other Metro bus goes somewhere else). It's not a long wait but it's a popular route. If there's more people than fit on the bus, you have to wait for the next one.

The Metro Buses are clean, have aircon and !suspension! - so are not the workout that regular buses sometimes offer!

They are nice. I was staying near to Centaurus (by accident) and couldn't get a cab so I see this really nice bus with Siquera Campos on the front so I take a chance and jump on. They had a lady sitting near the center that takes your money and a little gate you go through after you get the ticket to sit in the back. I think it made only one stop from there to Siquera Campos.

I guess this is the bus you are talking about and I was just lucky to be at the stop. This stop was about a half block from the intersection of the street that Centaurus is on (forgot the name) with the main drag going towards the beach (not Reina Elizabet). Sorry for the spelling.

So I am wondering, what is this this? The Termas Express? Next stop Monte Carlo? What a coincidence.

Around midday Saturday near Uruguiana Metro station has usually been pleasantly hectic whenever I've been around. But slim picking in the p4p dept as discussed.

You can walk it to Lapa from Centro. My fave route is going to Praca Tiradentes and then down Lavadrio to Lapa. That's the one just after the square (if you're walking from Centro along Rua Carioca). Early evening is good. Lots of atmosphere, and later on is good too - at least with just a modicum of care. The route I would avoid is the bigger street just before the square - Republica do Paraguai. If I am walking along there late at night I am *very* alert as it is a nice place for muggings. Lavadrio is not only a nicer route but there's usually plenty of people about and not the big grassy sidings where you wouldn't want to let a dog have a p*ss.

You can get offers of presentable freelancers along Lavadrio (sometimes). Across the square on the north side are one or two termas, rarely open at the weekend, and with exceedingly grungy ladies in the late night cafes outside who seem to stay awake 24hrs without a wash looking for business. If you go right thru Lapa on the other hand, Lavadrio and then following Mem de Sa round to the left, you can find maybe the closest Rio has to traditional streetwalkers. They're mostly looking for cars I think, not top of my list of must-haves but one or two ok. Up Mem de Sa the other way I think there's the odd late night terma, but I'm not sure, just passed it on the bus on the way to VM.

On non-pros, like anywhere, it's a case of finding your comfort zone and inviting people into it. Lapa has a very wide range of bars and clubs, and also a street party usually on Fridays. Even more upmarket, back on Tiradentes believe it or not, is CCC, which plays live jazz, forro and so on most nights, table service and a very eclectic crowd, some dancing, and nice open air balconies. If you cross the square from Carioca and turn right you'll see it (Rua do Teatro), upstairs, with music coming out. A pleasant evening even if you want a break. (CCC also do dance lessons - downstairs or at the studio parallel on 7th de Setembro).

To answer help is still there. I was there last night (came by at 2am). Didn't go inside but scouted the talent outside leaving with mongers and soliciting. Truth is I seen nothing worth my time. Also too many people outside begging for money. Running up to you with their 4 month old baby in they're arms. Although this is pretty normal, I wasnt in the mood for it. Maybe it was a little too late but in my opinion it was thin, slim, next to none pickens fellas.

On anther note went to 4*4 last night. It was jame packed with women and men as usual. I got there around 730. A little too late actually. Plenty of variety and choices. Mostly light skinned goratas in all shapes and sizes. Took a gorgeous little lady upstairs (other bar area) for some small talk and a few more beers. It was completely empty, very private nice area to ask the pertinent questions and dfk a little bit. Took her to the cabin for 1 hr in the simple suite.

Don't have a break down of prices but I had 6 skols in a can at R5 a piece. Total came out to R252. So I'm guessing it was R30 for the drinks and R222. Next I go I'll get better details.

This is Brazil through and through. In most countries, when buying bulk you get a discount, not always in Brazil. A lot of items you buy in the supermarket work out more expensive when buying in Bulk. Rice is just one example, the 5kilo bags often (not always) are more expensive than 5 inidivual 1 kile bags. Sometimes there can be a reason for the increase. A 20 min session will take place in a cabin and a 40 min session will be take place in a room with bath.

Many times the increase is just without total logic. Like Avenida Presidente Vargas 633/apto 417. They charged R$ 15/10 min, R$ 20/20 min, R$ 40/30 min. All sessions in the same cabins.

I tried to explain to the casa owner that there was no logic to charge R$ 40/30 min. She wasn't a math genious so I explained to her slowly using my fingers, drawing figures and counting apples. By the way, to me there are several reasons why longer session could cost more than shorter sessions:
1. Longer sessions may take place in better rooms (with showers, like in 4*4, for example).
2. A 30 minute session may only last 5 minutes on occasion and probably about 15-20 minutes on average. But once you go to the 40 minute session, then you know that there is not going to be a quickie. The 40-min session then lasts between 30 and 40 min, an average of 35. So girls may have to work A LOT harder in a 40 min session than in a 30 min and work about twie as long on average.

That is an American and Canadian joke too. Poli-Sci/Pre-Law students were first engineering students and flunked out.

What is not a joke is that American inability to do high level math is why so few study the hard sciences and get science and engineering degrees. You are absolutely correct! After my first two trips to Brazil, I started using my ATM card rather than travellers' cheques. I often accessed by bank account to transfer funds from savings to checking for withdrawal. (My bank limits my withdrawals from savings and charges me after 2 in a month.) Luckily I did not have any problems with spyware on the machines I used.

The hotel I stay at most often now has free wifi. So I will access by bank account from my laptop from now on.

However, that still doesn't really solve the problem. Someone can hack into the wifi network and view my keystrokes. I think we are lucky that most thieves in Brazil are not so tech savvy and the infrastructure can't yet support super-hackers.
