Seems like common sense, but seriously, had you have done so, here's just one example: you could have spent an afternoon in a sauna, then headed to a KTV for the evening (a real one) with your mates and had a blast, for within the 1700 budget.

As far as places where you can pick-up pros, semi-pros or freebies, you may try clubs on Hengshan Lu, like Zapata's or Bourbon Street. Those are not "buy drink to me" venues but just regular clubs. Therefore, you won't spend fortune on drinks.

Serse I only ever stay at Ramada Plaza on Nanjing Lu (4 star) or Hua Ting Towers (5 star) - absolutely no problem with the internet connection in the hotels - ISG works fine.

Absolutely no problem - just walk around the place like you own it and you will never be challenged.

My camera is a Casio Exilm - it is very small - fits easily into bag with cigearettes etc.

The girls have always been fabulous with the camera - although very 'face' shy which is understandable.

Important thing is to teach them how to use it - show both of them the pics as they take them - they have as much fun as you do and will end up doing virtually anything for you to take pics of.

What I posted is only a FRACTION of the good ones I have.

I would like to say that my decision to pay for the membership of this site was basically due to the dedication of the members towards their fellow mongerers, and the pitance of a membership fee as compared to the amount of money spent on endeavours learned off by this site is really nothing. Not to mention the great pics such as Bad Boys'. And if you are a novice and read one of my useless posts you might just save some money.

To those people who do read and learn from this forum and don't have a desire to post, which is fine, IMHO you should show your gratitude in that form, and trust me the simple reward of pictures alone should do you justice.

Regarding the 'Reports of Distinction' comment on some posts, I think its an automated program feature of the site based on length.

Regarding the GPS tracking project by Albert, I found this really cool program for nokia phones which allows you to track yourself while walking, or in a car via GPS (for those phones that are equipped do a google search for 'Nokia Sports Tracker') and automatically produces a google earth log file (*. Kmz). I plan to use this while I am next in Shanghai possibly around OCT 15 to 27, though I don't know how much mongering I will be able to do as I have to escort two execs. Any senior members or otherwise if you want to accompany do let me know, I'll be trying to hit the BBS and LT action.

Wow is all I can say. Just be prepared to wait on weeknights as they will come. Patience is a virtue. Went twice and satisfied both times.

1st time was vietnamese girl whose name was "mine" and she had some really nice knockers. $100 usd and all night. Most everything offered including gfe.

I've heard that described as a "lymph gland massage" by a friend who managed to get an "upgrade" at the end of the process - never been tempted to experience it personally.

Concerning your other question, I recently found a couple of places that may suit you. On Zhang Yang Lu, coming east out of the Pudong downtown area, on the north-west corner of the crossroads with Yuanshen Lu, is a row of 4 or 5 massage shops. I've used two of them - the one I return to most often is in the middle, the girls wear light green striped uniforms and are generally pretty and friendly. The rooms are clean, shower is decent, and for me it's a nice place to call in at the end of a tough day. The massage is generally pretty good, and HJ is always offered - starting price usually 300, do your best from there! I've also used a place at the west end of the row, not as clean or well-arranged but the girl had amazing hand technique for 200RMB. There are two or three other places in the row with attractive girls in smart uniforms, which reminds me I must get back there soon...

About 1km to the east (towards the yuppie enclaves of Jinqiao) is a place with bright neon "massage" signs....have not tried that yet, but Pudong clearly has plenty to offer these days!

Speaking of decent massage, have you guys been to places where it's supposed to be good decent massage, except that they will use their fingernails to tease your buttocks and sometimes even your balls? What's that all about? It's such a bloody teaser, and in the end you'll have to go back for self-service. You got an upgrade at the Four Seasons?? I'm amazed - I've been going there for a couple of years, in my opinion they consistently offer the best serious massage in town, but I've never seen or heard of extra services being available. Similar story at Elaine massage, I've been there a couple of times, didn't think much of the massage and wasn't offered anything additional. At the other (west) end of Biyun Lu, on BaiHua Lu is Biyun Tang Massage - clean, friendly and generally legitimate (although apparently I'm not a good judge of that!). One of the girls offered extra service inside and outside work, but the next time I asked for her she had "left to pursue other opportunities"! I think there is a general pressure to keep that side of Yang Gao Lu respectable, so as not to have too many GL8s parked outside dubious places late at night!

Just to fill in some basic, hopefully useful info: if you want to get to the place by subway (not very classy I guess, but cheap), take Line 2 to Jing'an Temple. When you get out of the station, head west on West Nanjing Road (the road that the subway runs under), cross Huashan Road, and then hang a right on North Wulumuqi Road. It's like half a block. It's a big building with lots of lights and stuff, and I don't really know what the rest of it is. They're open from 1 PM to 2 AM. The going rate is 700 RMB each.

It was confirmed for me that I was at the right place when a tout dude handed me a little card. I think he was amazed that I was so easily persuaded to come in, but then I showed him that I had the address written down and he laughed.

If having a dude help you undress gives you the willies a little bit, this doesn't happen at this place. You go in a room and they let you change into pajamas yourself. As it turned out, they let me keep my own clothes because they realized I was way too big for the PJs.

Anyway, to get down to brass tacks: I decided to splurge on two xiaojies. I was given five ladies to choose from at first (behind a one-way mirror, I'm pretty sure). I was uncertain, so I asked if there were any others, and two more ladies came out. I went to Shanghai Hotel for the first time this past week. The location information posted in this forum is indeed correct:

The hotel sign is displayed prominently in English, so it is impossible to mistake.

When I first arrived, I just assumed someone would see me and direct me to where the girls were; I was mistaken. This is a pretty nice hotel (judging from the lobby) and many hotel guests were checking in, both foriegners and Chinese (If fact, a bus load of Indians arrived just as I was leaving).

So, I wandered around in the lobby area and gift shop hoping I'd see a sign that would point me in the right direction.

Eventually, I ventured into the elevator. On the elevator button menu, I saw that there was a "Spa" located on the 2nd floor. This is indeed the place to go.

The staff greeted me as soon as I left the elevator. I took note of a price menu (mostly in Chinese) at the front desk. I believe 750 RMB was the highest service offered. I was immediately taken to a common area changing room where a young man bade me to undress and place my clothes and valuables (including my wallet) into a locker. After I undressed (completely nude) I was given an electronic key bracelet for the locker to wear around my wrist. I really wasn't sure what was going on at this point, since the atmosphere seemed more like a bathhouse than anything else.

I was given a pair of sandals and a towel and then I was ushered into a public bathhouse. The waitstaff all wear shorts in this room (everyone else is walking aroound naked). Most people I spoke to here only spoke Chinese. Fortunately, I know enough to get around. I was the only foriegner in the place, so I felt a little out of place. However, I was treated very respectfully, so it wasn't too awkward.

Inside the bathhouse I was asked to shower in one of the stalls. Afterward, one of the men-in-shorts brought me to an adjacent stall where I was told to lie down on a massage table (still inside the common area).

At this point in time I was thinking to myself "Where the fuck are the women? Am I going to get gyped out of 750 RMB??"

Anyway, the man-in-shorts proceded to give me a facial scrub which exfoliated about a "marble" sized portion of skin. Afterward, he gave me the option of having a whole body session for a price of 70 RMB. Figuring I should just go with the flow, I accepted. Minutes later, he exfoliated a small handfull of skin from my front and back with a rough cloth. Rolled up dead skin kind of looks like a chunk of dog turd - really gross.

Afterward, a bathworker bade me to get into the public hot tub which was very relaxing. They have a flat screen TV on the wall which is nice to watch (which, incidently, was playing the Womens Football World Cup; Germany vs. Norway).

Afterward, the bathworkers led me to the dressing room (still in the common area) and I was asked to put on a pair of loose shorts and a shirt.

FINALLY, I was led down a private hallway to get a massage. A young girl dressed up in a Kimono (or somesuch costume) pointed me down another corridor. It seemed like a small maze of passageways with multiple rooms to either side. I believe at one point, they were going to leave me in a small waiting room, but after a moments pause, they just brought me to where the section where girls were. All my thoughts of apprehension disappeared. The girls were all dressed in proper **** wear (except for the hostess of course).

The hostess then lined up three girls in front of me and asked me too choose. I chose #90 who was the only one who looked up and smiled at me.

#90 brought me to a nearby room. Inside was a water cooler and a bed. The opposite wall and ceiling were covered with mirrors (for your viewing pleasure).

The girl quickly undressed (made easier by the fact that she was already practically in her underwear). I was told to lie down on the table.

Basically the session was split into three sessions.

1) Nude massage
2) BBBJ
3) Sex

Interestingly enough, the room had series of bars hanging down from the ceiling which were used during the 3rd session (sex). #90 would tie a red scarf from various part of the bars and hang herself down in various positions (upside down, sideways, like a swing, etc.). It was odd, but it certainly worked.

After I had finished, I was escorted back to the common bath room to shower up and then headed back to the changing room to change.

After dressing I was escorted to the front desk where I paid my bill (750 RMB for the "massage" and an additional 70 RMB for the exfoliation).

All in all, I think the Shanghai Hotel was decent experience. The total time spent was about 2 hours and girl #90 was above average.

It wasn't quite as good the other SPA I've been to (202 Wulumuqi Lu - Bei, which is about a 5-10 minute walk north from SH). A slight correction and request:

- in one of the earlier reports it says that the Shanghai Hotel is across from the Huashan Hospital. It is diagonally across. Right across Wulumqui is a hole in the wall Chinese hotel. The fellow on duty really thought I was crazy when I kept pantomining that I wanted to go up to the second floor to see if there was sauna there (to know if I was in the right place). The Shanghai hotel is just north across Huangshan.

Frankly, I didn't get much out of the "tongue bath". For the uninitiated it is composed of 2 parts: a "slurping" with warm water being noisily forced against your skin (from her mouth) followed by licking. While it was sexual when applied to my fingers, toes, nipples, ass, and genitals a large portion (timewise) was on my arms, legs, and back. There are over 9000 posts in the Shanghai thread. As preliminary research, I obviously didn’t have time to read them all. I did download all this year’s posts (136 pages!) in PDF format and strung them all together to make searching easy.

I skimmed through the huge document, skipping posts about in-call options (sauna, BBS) & KTV. I have no interest in them. I read posts about “buy-me-drink” girls (WTF?). I read good things about the Filipinas in Manhattan. But I never found what I was looking for - members (preferably laowais) reporting positive experiences with Chinese girls (take-away only). The Shanghai P4P options may be worth exploring for resident expats and visiting businessmen, but to travel to Shanghai exclusively for mongering purposes... nah!

Then again, maybe Judy’s has a great selection of China Dolls providing wonderful service these days? If so, the extremely helpful Shanghai gang definitely wouldn’t tell me about it!

You cannot compare Shanghai with CP. CP is a unique mongering destination, probably the best it gets in China for Chinese girls. Unfortunately, BBB has not been there, although he keeps promising to stop by. (Get your ass down here BBB!)

Having said that, I have always enjoyed myself in Shanghai albeit with the gracious hospitality of the "gang".

One of my favorites are the BBBJ joints. Great BBBJCIM for only 100 RMB. The BBS action is plentiful enough, but not as concentrated or as many girls per shop as in CP. I noticed that many BBB will not allow take-out if they do not know you. And, most in town, charge a laowai surcharge, Happy Town and the Village excepted.

I do not find the TRL girls that attractive. It seemed like a lot of work to get them to go with you. I've picked up a few SW with average service. With the exception of a rare instance in Hong Kong, I only do Filipinas in The Philippines, so they are not an attraction for me in Shanghai.

Sauna (comparable service with S. China) and KTV can be more expensive, but I have seen some real stunners in Shanghai KTV on the very few occassions I went in the past. Available for take-out if you have deep pockets.

As BBB has said, Shanghai is a unique city with some excellent experiences to be had, however, I do not believe it is for you. At least half the fun I've had there is just hanging out with the "gang".

after several years of rtff'ing i thought it's about time i gave something back! my work has me travelling the globe to 4 or 5 destinations a month and i always try to ensure at least one of those takes in my favourite city, shanghai. bear in mind that i am a westerner who speaks only 3 words of chinese (hello, goodbye and thankyou) you may be much more successful than me if you have local knowledge. before i start i would just like to say how much i appreciate the patience and information provided by the senior members. as they frequently say, all the information is already here if only you can be bothered to look. having done this myself here is a synopsis of my experiences over the last few years.

saunas

generally divided into 2 types – either a conventional sauna type experience or a soapland (washing based) style. both result in full service in the establishments listed here. i personally prefer to go to a soapy if i am a limited time or a conventional sauna if i have no time constraints as i can chill out for as long as i like in the hot pools. prices are generally around 700-800 rmb for one girl and 1100-1300 for two. everyone should try 2 girl at least once just to check that box in your log book but personally i don't find the extra 50% cost worth it. conventional sauna establishments usually have a bloke who will want to exfoliate you for a small extra fee. it is not compulsory and many people don't like it as they can make you red raw! you also need to be ok with the idea of some bloke getting a little up close and personal with the old man!

yu ping sauna (448 zun yi lu, 20 mins by taxi west of downtown shanghai, not far from hongqaio). this is one that doesn't seem to get so many comments these days (at least not on this board). if you stand looking at the entrance to the yu ping hotel (quite grotty looking) you will see another revolving door to the right. go through door and walk straight ahead where they will beckon you forward. this was the first sauna i went to and still remains an occasional old fave. this place is a conventional sauna set up with very nice décor in the sauna areas (rock tiled walls, roman style baths, etc.). after the sauna experience you will be led to a general seating area where you can have a free beer and they will also bring some nibbles (nuts and watermelon slices). you will be sat in lazy boy chairs with a couple of large screen tellys playing local tv. manicures and pedicures are available in the main room at a small extra cost and i have even been on the receiving end of a cutie cleaning out my ears (very strange but what the hell). after a short while the manager will offer either a full massage or a foot massage. the foot massage is done by a different set of girls to the full massage and results in a reasonably good massage followed by an oily tug in a separate room. most people opt for full service. the manager will lead you into a nicely lit corridor behind the bar area where you will come to a long horizontal slit-like window through which you will see usually 10-25 ladies. they rate as fairly typical for most shanghai saunas but every now and then you will find a honey. service usually includes the standard cat bath, rimming, red rope, bbbj and fs however i did have several visits a short while ago with the girl who was the service trainer and she really was a very, very bad girl indeed! unfortunately she has gone now, however it might well be worth asking for the service trainer wherever you go. service usually lasts 60-70 minutes after which you can take as long as you like going back through the main bar area where you can get a snack if you know how to ask (it used to come automatically) and if you like you can spend more time in the sauna area. all in all, not the greatest place but there is something about it that keeps dragging me back. or is it just because i lost my sauna virginity here!

the shanghai hotel (central location near jingan). so much written on the forum already that i won't go into too much detail. nice sauna facilities but the exfoliating guys are always far to desperate to show you how much skin they get off you. extensive manicure and pedicure facilites in the general seating area but after seeing the girls they tend to usher you straight back to the sauna area to get you out the door. when the time comes to choose your girl be ready to walk into a room where you will be face to face with 10-20 ladies. this can be a bit unnerving the first time it happens. definitely the hottest choice of girls but expect them to have more attitude than elsewhere. i am reasonably endowed (not overly so for a caucasian) but i am getting fed up with number of girls here that use this as an excuse to get out of giving a proper service.

ji yuan salon (north-west corner of the jiao zhou lu/changping lu junction, a 15 minute walk north of jingan). 2 or 3 young guys outside will show you the way upstairs. this was the first soapy i tried. premises are very nice and impressive however i feel the attendant staff are not. several smaller waiting rooms compared to the other establishments mentioned above. pretty selection of girls but service was remarkably average on several occasions. bearing in mind that i usually monger in the mid-afternoon this place usually involves a wait while others do not. would i go again? only if many other places were shut. having said all that, there are many people here that absolutely love the place.

209 wulumuqi lu (right by jingan and a 5 minute walk north from the shanghai hotel). another soapy. a guy will meet you at the building entrance and show you to the lift that will take you straight to the correct floor. very nice set up using a lot of small waiting rooms (typically a max of 4 people in each but i have always been on my own) with their own televisions. never had to wait more than a few seconds before being called to the fishbowl. consequently this is a really good option if you only have an hour and a half window before having to be elsewhere. the fishbowl is a room where you sit with the manager on a sofa with a glass pane in front of you. the girls will then be brought in to the room behind the pane. the downside is that they will only bring in 5 girls, however they will often pull out a couple more if you ask. girls are fairly typical of what you will find elsewhere but the service is usually good and i feel the place is much cosier than ji yuan.

shu yi quan sauna (825 yan an middle road, on the south side of the road and to the west of the junction with shanxi nan lu). a couple of young guys outside will show you inside. a conventional sauna with a large communal waiting room/bar area. the jacuzzi/pool has several large screen televisions usually showing sports but the water is alarmingly green! unfortunately if you want a beer you have to pay for that as an extra. the bar waitress was quite hot and got all giggly but we had no common language, which was a shame as if i could have had her i would have been delighted. unfortunately i was led straight to a room where a rather dumpy girl was delivered with no other option available and the language barrier insurmountable. haven't been back since.

bo duo hui suo (on the north side of xietu lu just to the west of luban lu, 15 minute taxi ride south of the central area and not far from the lupu bridge). look for a century mart supermarket and then look to the right for a small entrance where you'll find a lift that will take you straight to the right floor. confusingly, it has a small sign saying 'tomson' above the entrance but don't confuse it with the next place on my list. only discovered this place recently after recent postings on this forum and it's currently sitting in my number one spot. i really like this place, not only do you get 90 minutes of playtime but you also get both conventional sauna and soapland experience. on arrival you are guided to a smaller waiting room with television very similar to 209 wulumuqi where you change into your pj's. if you ask you can then go to a jacuzzi/pool area with a sauna and exfoliation although there isn't quite the atmosphere some other places have. afterwards you can go to the fishbowl and choose from 15-20 girls, most of which are fairly average but there are some cuties if you take your time looking. there have been reports saying the glass is one way but i am fairly sure this isn't the case. there are also reports that there are uniforms on offer which i'd love to try but regrettably i haven't discovered the language skills to exploit that one yet. it certainly hasn't been offered by gesture. the service has always been really good on each occasion i have been there. it is another good one to bear in mind if you only have a limited time available as you can be all done and dusted in 2 hours.

tomson sauna (4th floor of the jin yu lan plaza on the south east side of the xu jia hui lu and da pu lu junction). it is not spelt thompson, tompson or thomson as some reports have suggested! only been to this one once but unfortunately it was a really poor experience. it is a conventional type sauna but with a few really strange features. the attendant staff are quite creepy as they seem to be a bit too interested in you when you are naked. also, rather bizarrely, when walking around the sauna part there were three of the full service ladies in the same area loitering around. their intention is to do the exfoliation part of the service and therefore bag you so you don't get a choice from the fishbowl. unfortunately her exfoliation skills were also a bit crap but the body was good so i let it go. she then drove me past the fishbowl (which had some great looking girls in there) into a room. there may be a witing room/bar but i wouldn't know as i wasn't given the chance to find out! the cat bath, ice and fire and ar was no more than cursory and the bj was covered (it's always been bbbj everywhere else over here in my experience). having complimented me earlier on the size of my equipment she then started complaining and insisted that i finished after only 45 minutes. this is supposed to be another 90 minute place. there then followed the most uncomfortably period of 5 minutes where she effectively completely ignored me before then hurrying me out the door. for interest her number was 612 and i recommend you all put her on you avoid list. when i was unceremoniously dumped straight back in the sauna they tried to encourage me to get showered and go but i thought i might as well try and get something for my money by having a dip in the jacuzzi/pool. this turned out to be quite interesting as while i was there some blinds pulled up to reveal 8 new girls being trained to pole dance by a service trainer! they were behind a glass panel which was one way as every now and then one of the girls would come up to the glass and try to peer through to see if anyone was there. interestingly one of the new girls was number 609. this was a number that has been recommended recently but she seems to be a brand new girl since then. all in all this was my worst experience in shanghai however i would be prepared to give it another try on the basis of the fact that next time i would not let one of the girls railroad the proceedings. be warned!

there have been a couple of places mentioned over the last couple of years offering massage followed by an oily tug or even prostate massage. one was cylz (at 888 changde lu) and the other was just east of there but i can't remember its name. both seem to have closed down now but they were ok for what they were. now to reveal my best kept secret. there is a small massage place 10 minutes walk from jingan where you can get a fantastic 90 minute oil massage with excellent hj for a total price of 118 rmb. yes i did really say a total price of 118 rmb! head north-west from jingan down wanhangdu lu. after about 400 meters you will come to some traffic lights where the main part of the road curves off slightly right but a small road carries on ahead. go down there and after 100 meters or so there is a park on the left with some basketball courts in there. when looking at the park there is a a massage place off to the left (it is down a small alley from the road you have just walked down). no one inside will speak english but there is a big board above the reception desk with the top 2 items being oil massage (one 45 mins and one 90 mins). go for the 90 minute option but try to select the girl from all the girls loitering around (be careful as there are a few middle aged women around there). i have been there many times and only ever had one bad experience due to a girl who clearly didn't know how to massage. at last i can now feel that i have given something back to the group!

This report got me interested, so I went to try the Baoan for myself. The experience was largely as described by the other esteemed member, with some critical differences...I must have gone at a busy time, as I had to wait about 20 minutes in the lounge / TV area. I was led to a room for the massage, where the girl was indeed dressed in a skimpy red and black dress. She was only moderately attractive, and I was concerned to find out that she was from Shanghai - in my experience, that means Attitude, with a very capital "A"! The face-down part of the massage was ok, but nothing special. When it was time to turn over she removed her dress as advertised - and then everything else! So far so good, except for two things - she undressed with all the enthusiasm and eroticism of a Carrefour parking attendant, and she had a distinct beer belly! Not a great start for the rest of the massage - technique ok but not exceptional, but marred by a total lack of enthusiasm (initially on her part, eventually also on mine!). She did allow a lot of touching, but did not bother to react to anything (she could at least have pretended occasionally....). In spite of her being totally naked, there was no indication of FS being available (although to be honest, there was too much mutual disinterest in the room for it to be worth pursuing!)

"I have not read any reports on the forum about the Baoan Hotel Sauna so I thought I would take a look see. The location is adjacent to the Purple Mountain Hotel between Zhang Yang Lu and Weifeng Xi lu in Pudong. Very near the Intercontinental. I had strolled in to the 5th floor lobby area before but found it to be shut until after noon.

The facility is probably one of the finest around with first class decoration and very spotless service areas. The showers rivaled any 5 star hotel. The staff we polite and distant but helpful when needed. Didn’t hover. The actual massage rooms were beautiful but the doors did not lock nor did the windows have coverings. First clue.

I did the requisite shower and had nice PJ’s in my size (xl) handed to me and was allowed to dry myself and put on my own clothes. My preference. I was lead down a 200 meter set of corridors to the room where a very pretty (8+) 27 year old Nanjing girl was waiting in a sexy red and black nightie dress. She took my PJ top and lead me to the massage table, a very comfortable and clean one with a set of bars overhead. #929 proceeded to give me the finest dry massage I have ever had! The private room had 1 private shower, 2 massage beds. Room was clean, but you could hear the clients in adjacent rooms chatting, and the massage "hitting" sounds.

Just an update on the Tomson 汤姆生 Sauna (4th floor of the Jin Yu Lan Plaza on the south east side of the Xu Jia Hui Lu and Da Pu Lu junction) that was mentioned a while back. Get over it dude, for your own sake. Nothing bad happened to you at all. I guarantee you are gonna have a lot of actual bad experiences in customer service here that will require a lot of patience and maturity to resolve or otherwise accept, and some that will warrant PSA's and boycotts, but this wasn't one of them.

Just got back from a disappointing massage, this place is in Pudong, on the southwest corner of Laoshan Road and Weifang Road. Sorry I didn't catch an English name, in fact I don't think it had one. It's on the same side of the street as the KFC, and it's the first massage place south of Weifang.

I don't like to negotiate up front, I prefer the "thrill" of haggling during the massage. But in this case the girl spoke almost no English and had one of those "upsell" attitudes, so the negotiating didn't go well. We initially agreed to a 1 hour oil massage for 200 RMB but then she started the upsell. I wouldn't budge over 400 but she was demanding more. I only had 400 with me and tried to explain this but she didn't get it. At one point she reached into the locker and started digging around my pants pockets looking for my wallet. She finally asked me to get up and produce my wallet and pay up! So I gave her the cash and she went back to work. You can guess the rest. A rushed, mediocre back rub followed by a race to the finish line.

I know, I know, it's my fault for not striking a deal upfront. But I get the sense that the hard upsell is standard operating procedure at this particular place. Or maybe my approach just doesn't work in Shanghai? Anyways I would recommend passing this one by, there are about five more places within 200 meters on the same side of the street.

I'm not saying to boycott the place. The girls still have great service. But, the management downstairs has very poor customer service. It's two different things. The cashier makes you buy the membership for 100RMB. If they are going to give discount to everyone like that why get customer to buy the membership. Make it one price so other customers are not confused. I will still go to JY but I just prefer not to go to JY3.

QQ's friendfinder is literally ***** central for the chinese literate. Signed up for a QQ account the other day, clicked on their 'Look for Friends' icon which led me to a long list of profiles with photos. At least 50% of the profiles lead to hookers. Don't be fooled though, the actual persons are not the girls you see on photos, no matter how convincing.

Upon adding to QQ, the person would send you a message, asking you if you need any services. Some would straight on tell you prices, and location, and phone. I’m going to add to the Ji Yuan debate here on customer service although my reasons are somewhat different and it didn’t just happen at the front desk. I have to admit I didn’t agree with the complaint of the previous member although can understand how it might rub some people up the wrong way.

OK. Just got back form Ji Yuan 1 – JiaoZhou Lu, Changping Lu. It’s a 10 minute cab ride away. I left home 85 minutes ago. I arrived at 9. 15pm – tol that it is a 20 minute wait. OK, don’t worry, not tonight, please sir, don’t worry, only 10 minutes. OK, I’ll wait. And in fairness a couple of minutes later I am taken. Straight to the line up. WTF?

I have read a lot of glowing reports about the SH Sauna near the Hilton, so off I went this afternoon with high hopes and a fist full of yuan. Arrived about 2 and the routine was that, routine. I reported a similar experience at this place recently, and have now stopped going to all the massage places on that junction as I think they get too much easy business and don't care about regular customers. Went back to Jin Qiao Sauna last week, and asked them again about the 24 hour service. They claimed, once again, that they do have service all hours of the day (both the attendants outside and the girl in my room told the same story). I'm usually asleep and not in Jin Qiao at 5:00AM, but would like to try this someday, if possible.

Also, tried the 600RMB option this time at Jin Qiao Sauna. The extra 100 RMB gets you a lot more AR action, specifically with the red wine and the coca-cola! The red wine was different, but I turned down the coca-cola AR option. I did not want to feel bubbles up my you-know-what!

Would also like to confirm that Elaine's Massage (on Biyun Road near Hong Feng Road) definitely has HJ service as reported earlier. The Shanana Massage on the corner of Biyun Road and Hong Feng Road also is definitely a legitimate massage. But, if you need a really good, hard comfortable massage, without extras, Shanana is the place to go.

I use this establishment regularly, but do not share the same experience. With a VIP card I pay 50 rmb (75 less 33%) per hour for massage, plus the tip for the girl herself. I do of course stick to my original bargain and don't continue haggling. Suggest you read the white board outside the door, 200 is for essential rose oil body massage, top of the bill.

There are 26 girls at the parlour, when chosen in rotation, ie the sofa inside the doorway, they get one client per day. If, as often happens, the client does not require a happy ending, then there is no tip, the girl earns almost nothing on the day. A client who wants to keep on haggling will not be appreciated. Believe it or not, most first time clients pay 500 tip, and 300 when returning.

It follows that anyone returning and asking for a specific girl, will be made extremely welcome as this is additional to the daily rotation quota. I spent a very pleasant two hours relaxing there this afternoon, and in fact dozed off towards the end of the session. I was left to sleep on without charge.

The establishment is attached to the street restaurant next door, and is very popular with at least some sections of the expat community who often gather there for a few beers, (at 5 rmb a bottle), If you are passing by don't hesitate to stop by for a beer and a chat, we are normally sat outside on the terrace, surrounded by empty tsingtao bottles.

Sorry you had such a bad experience, I don't suppose you noted the girls number. All the girls wear a number badge on pain of being fined if seen without it.

Ah Logos, I'm sorry you had a bad time. But it sounds like you came in with the wrong expectations about what Shanghai is about.

Shanghai is not and never has been considered the cheapest place for sex. If you want that, go south, or anywhere other than Shanghai.

None of the locals "rave" about Tong Ren Lu (TRL). It is just a convenient place to meet. Most of us learned long ago how to control the "buy me drink" girls. We've adopted a few as friends, and for the most part they keep the "buy me..." to a minimum. Of course, we will buy some, but within reason.

What makes TRL fun is the friendship, not the p*ssy. The girls are (sometimes) an entertaining diversion, but we go to there to meet up with buddies and plan the evening. Sometimes we just stay. Sometimes we go hit some BBS or the Pub. Sometimes a KTV. Sometimes dinner.

What's nice about Shanghai is the diversity. There is always something new happening, somewhere. It is a rich, complex city. It is hard to get bored in Shanghai.

I think different countries has their differences. Different monger has different taste as well. I don't think it is fair to compare Apple to Oranges.

Shanghai is one of the earliest commercialized city in China. It has the best of both world. Most monger come here is not solely for the reason of mongering but mostly for Business. Since they had landed here, they must as well catch a bit of fun.

Did you actually get to meet any member of the Shanghai Gang? Of course beside your brief encounter with me in CP; I don't think you did met any one of the fun loving group and I don't think it is fair to comment about the group.

Well after a bit of trouble with the jetlag I figured I should walk it of. Went down Panyu rd to find a decent restaurant (and there are actually a few) also spotten 1 (yes only onle) BBS. It was mentioned here before and it is in a side street/alley about 15 meters from the sidewalk. In the sign it says something like Hanson Hotel and a lot in Chinese as wel. If you walk by and don't see it you will hear it. There were about 6 girls waiting behind the glass door/window and as I walked by (only one of a few lao wai I've seen on this road in the past two days) they were all tapping the window and waving. As far as I could tell from the sidewalk they were 5-8, but you know how it is close up so probably more like 3-6. As the main road was very busy and I was actually looking for a meal I didn't stop to have a look or inform about pricing. There is also a police station verry close by which makes me nervous. Often but not always due to the fact that they cannot speak much Chinese and are just generally clueless about how things work outside of their bubble.

Even the taxis drivers are starting to expect tips from lao wai. Not sure if this is translating all over the board or not.

One of the reasons I came here was the affordable environment in which to pursue more interesting ventures and although inflation is inevitable we should not welcome it with open arms.

I think "Clean" and "BBS" are contradictions in terms, at least in Shanghai. If you want a nice massage, with happy ending, search the forum for massage parlors, not for a BBS.

I suggest it's a question of degree, considering we're buying a product where the quality is entirely at the discretion of the provider! I don't mind paying a little over the normal rate if that means I get good service from a happy girl who wants to see me come back (even though she may regard me as a bit dumb to pay that much - my pride can stand that). I see that as a better alternative than pushing the price down to a level that makes her wish she didn't have to deal with me, thus affecting the level of service provided. You might argue that she's not obliged to accept that low price, but that's not always the case. My wallet won't go to absurd prices, but I'm more interested in a pleasant exchange than getting the last 100RMB out of the deal.

For me, it comes back to what kind of relationship you want with your service provider - personally, whether I'm buying a massage or a bunch of flowers, I feel better if both parties walk away satisfied with the transaction. There is a FS massage place at the corner of Panyu and FaHuan Zhen Road. Which is right across from the Crown Plaza. I have never seen a correlation between paying more and getting better service. I have seen a mild correlation between paying less and getting better service; that happens when you treat the woman like a lady. The best place to find them is on Tongren Lu. This is a small street just past the Portman Hotel.

It you head west on Nanjing Road, pass the Portman on your right, then you will get to TGL. Make a left turn and walk about 50 meters and you will see a strip of bars on your left. The bars are very different. Here's a summary:

Manhattan: this bar has Phillipino WG. They seem to start showing up in force after 10 PM. If you look around and make eye contact, they will come over to you and start talking. They speak English. In no time, they will be flirting, then want to go to your hotel. Be careful as there are a few ladyboys in the crowd.

Judys: a good bar with Phillipino and Chinese WG. Some locals hang out there as well.

The other bars on this part of TGL are, IMHO, a waste of time as the girls will hit you up for expensive drinks. I am sure take out is available, but you might as well go to Manhattan or Judys as the selection is better and you don't have that buy me an overpriced drink BS.

Malones: this is an American pub that is just north of Nanjing Rd on TGL. This part has a phillipino band playing classic rock and roll. In fact, they are pretty good. The bar has 3 levels. The lower level has the band and there are many chinese WG there. Many don't look like WG as they are simply dressed, but don't worry, most are available for take out. You may also find a horny expate there as well.

One word of caution: the Southen end of TGL has a lot of people hanging out on it, due to the number of bars. While there were 3 cops there at night, I would urge you to be very cautious of your surroundings.

Beware of Teahouse scams

I have a firsthand account from someone who was conned this month. He is a complete newbie to China, totally vulnerable.

He was baited by the usual pretty girl on Nanjing Lu near Citic Square. He was using a map to figure out where he was going. She was cute, polite and helpful. Just his luck it started to rain and she took him to a teahouse to wait out the rain.

In the end, they initially bullied him for 3,000rmb but he said he didn't have that much on him, and they settled for 1,500rmb.

They had the usual thugs threatening to beat the shit out of him, etc...

For those of you who do not know any better, it has been said countless times on the forum. Don't go with a tout. In this case, the tout was in the form a girl. Not all touts are A**HOLE men pestering you if you want a girl.

Ok. Firstly this is a very basic, and in my opinion, a very pricey hotel for the quality of lodging. I paid less to stay near nanjing lu. It is apparently for the Chinese and japanese business men on the lower end of the spectrum Shanghai price wise, though I see other foriegners, I think it may be near some exhibitions etc. I have to stay here for other reasons. Never again though. It's just not for me, but its a decent hotel otherwise to rest your head (pun intended).

On a more brighter note, this is a monger hotel. I don't know if it is girl friendly from outside, but inside all the inneuendos to sex are fairly evident. Especially where the spa is concerned.

I didn't get room service, but went up to the spa. A local or ABC or someone with a guide would probably get better service. It wasn't that the service wasn't good; they were attentive, I was probably a novelty asking for the Hong Kong massage especially when the attendants imitated the sex act with their fingers and I nodded a yes, and basically felt out of place. Not so much advice, but an idea.

When I joined, I set up an email account especially for the site. Why? So I could subscribe to the Shanghai and Beijing threads. You get a daily update into your in box.

This creates your own off line version of the forum which you can scanback through, search and delete unwanted items from. It's been really useful and means I can access at work etc and not go through the net. It's got all the core items in I need.

If you are coming to Shanghai you have an online database. Start a month before and the, more than likely, 'stupid' (read obvious) questions will be rapidly answered. You'll know where to stay, where to go, what to pay, and what happens if you go with a tout.

It also provides a great way of ensuring that should you not have ready email access you can still get to ISG. You don't have to print reams of pages off with details on. It's there. And when you are done, you can post back for the rest.

I still find it a better way of searching back through posts than using the search function here (which isn't bad anyway).

Simple, but seems worthwhile. And the daily update is invariably entertaining reading.

I've been looking back over ISG SH thread after long break of reading it and generally lurking about. Interesting. I've lived and worked in SH (white expat) for over 5 years, been reading this for maybe 3 years, doing the stuff it talks about for about 4. 9 years. Ahem. Anyway.

Some random observations:

1. Prices from the street have remained pretty much constant for the whole time I have been here. Hovering around the 400 kuai mark for go home with the lady (yours or hers) and spend rest of the night, which is what I prefer to do (from about midnight/0100hrs which is when I tend to fall out of a bar and be thinking of such things). It seemed to go down a touch to 300 or even 200 a little while ago (end 06/early 07? ), if you were not enormously worried about looks, but seems to have steadied back. This is Julu/ Huashan Lu etc. Tong Ren has never really become my scene so cannot comment there (riotous days of Maoming RIP sadly gone, God that was good in '03/'04 sigh, BBSs not my taste). However, mention of Filipinas may tempt me in Tong Ren direction. Recommendations welcome

2. There are several ladies out there who have been around on the same ground for several years. There seem to be a lot from Nanjing, or maybe that is just random. Lily? Ling Ling with the printed biz card? Linda (and her 22 year old sister who is v cute)?

3. Hengshan west of Sashas (and sometimes even outside Sashas or even the Blarney) seems to have become a hunting ground again. But not tried it recently. Generally I have not done well on Hengshan, and I have heard some dubious things about it.

It's all v colourful anyway I have also been taken to a number of, ah, short time hotels, if the lady has not got the space (or sufficiently nonchalant neighbours).

6. I detect some rumblings about buying drinks for gals in the "talkie bars". Yeah, can be irritating. However, if you are to be here for a while, it is worth cultivating a few gals and their bar owners (perhaps even more important), it's not really that expensive (30-40 kuai a drink, hey not big deal), the bars are sometimes useful to gather SH gossip, meet new folks and generally hang out. Some of e. G. The Huashan Lu bars have been there for a long time, the owners for much longer. Depending on the gal/bar, you might get further. Frankly, "talkie bars" are basically for talk. But talk can be useful. Time spent in reconnaissance, as the military say.

7. Overall, my advice is. Be careful, but openminded, and treat the ladies well. Courtesy costs nothing, and is generally repaid in kind.

I suggest it's a question of degree, considering we're buying a product where the quality is entirely at the discretion of the provider! I don't mind paying a little over the normal rate if that means I get good service from a happy girl who wants to see me come back (even though she may regard me as a bit dumb to pay that much - my pride can stand that). I see that as a better alternative than pushing the price down to a level that makes her wish she didn't have to deal with me, thus affecting the level of service provided. You might argue that she's not obliged to accept that low price, but that's not always the case. My wallet won't go to absurd prices, but I'm more interested in a pleasant exchange than getting the last 100RMB out of the deal.

For me, it comes back to what kind of relationship you want with your service provider - personally, whether I'm buying a massage or a bunch of flowers, I feel better if both parties walk away satisfied with the transaction.

Ringer, your note indicates you are missing the subtleties of the China culture. Of course on the one hand you are right - if you push the price down too low, you end up with a provider who is pissed off and will give you poor service, because you have caused her to lose face (she accepted a price too low).

On the other hand, if you pay too much, you have lost face in her eyes, whether you know it or not. You, to her, are a weak foreigner.

If you stand up for your principles, and negotiate for the correct price (they and you know what it is) she will respect you *more* than if you go over.

If you want to treat a provider extra nice, you need to separate the *treat* from the payment. Over payment is a sucker's game, but giving a gift after the fact is different - romantic. Separating them establishes the fact that you are a shrewd negotiator (something any girl in Shanghai will respect) and that you are a generous romantic man.

See the difference? Give it a try next time. Since we're on the topic of newbie lessons recently, I figured I should share an experience recently.

I just tried World Plaza Pudong this afternoon and to keep it real short for those who doesn't wanna read the entire post, its definitely a good spot.

There are a few that I've encountered that would actually allow the girl to stay till the morning. But you do need to ask before you leave the shop.

No matter whether you are doing ST or overnight, my experience is that the shop will always ask you to pay upfront as long as you are doing a take-out. My way of handling this is to tell them that I will pay for one shot. If I like the girl and her service, I will ask her to stay overnight, and then I will pay her the balance. BUT, you are close to the subway and it takes you right to the heart of Sauna land, Pudong! Take the Shanghai Science & Industry subway exit and head toward Zhongshan Park. That would be mostly west. And take the Dongshan exit (next stop) to get to the one located in the Marriott Courtyard building. It has been posted before but is in 819, I think, Dongfang Lu building. Seems like it is on the 4th floor up some escalators. It is a soapland of sorts and is OK.

If you take the second exit off the subway, Dongchang Rd exit) you are very close to what I believe to be the best. It was posted in a post just today with pictures of the business card. You can actually look for the street exit sign after you exit the subway and follow the signs to World Plaza. You will come into the basement of the World Plaza but on B1. Just go down to B2 on the escalators and make a hard left and you will see a glass front business with a couple of white jacketed attendants hovering around outside. It is NOT the prettiest place nor the most modern of facilities, but the girls (#5, 17, 19) have a wonderful atitude and are actually VERY cute in that small chested Chinese way. They work very hard to please! 650/long hour! If you want an almost as good one but better surroundings, head up to the street level and head out of World Plaza to the left for about 2 long blocks on Pudong Lu. You will see a mall with Wagas on your left (GOME across the street). Turn into the alley past Wagas and bear left around that curved building where you will see a Ramen Noodle shop on your left. The elevator lobby accross from that (directly accross from the mall doors) is where you catch the elevator to the 5th floor. Ask for #379 for another GFE. Another Sauna can be found further down Pudong Lu to Zhangyang Lu. Turn left and go about two long blocks until you see a big computer market on your left and the Intercontinental Hotel standing proudly. Directly in front of that place is the Merrylin Hotel where you will find another good sauna. Look in the elevator for the right floor but think it is 3rd. Not sure.

There are BBS's everywhere but some pretty good lookers on the street off of Zhangyang lu one block from Pudong. Turn Right on that small street and there are two barber pole establishments on the first LONG block and three on the long block after yu cross Weifang Xi Lu. No personal experience with them. But they look pretty nice through the glass.

Ringer, your note indicates you are missing the subtleties of the China culture. Of course on the one hand you are right - if you push the price down too low, you end up with a provider who is pissed off and will give you poor service, because you have caused her to lose face (she accepted a price too low).

On the other hand, if you pay too much, you have lost face in her eyes, whether you know it or not. You, to her, are a weak foreigner.

If you stand up for your principles, and negotiate for the correct price (they and you know what it is) she will respect you *more* than if you go over.

If you want to treat a provider extra nice, you need to separate the *treat* from the payment. Over payment is a sucker's game, but giving a gift after the fact is different - romantic. Separating them establishes the fact that you are a shrewd negotiator (something any girl in Shanghai will respect) and that you are a generous romantic man.

See the difference? Give it a try next time. Actually my experience has been just as Ringer described, i.e. that paying more has gotten me much better service and a cadre of happy girls I can call upon at will who are eager to see me, and they have told me directly that they give me better service than they give others in part because I didn't beat them up on the price.

As a matter of fact, some have said the exact opposite of what many here purport to be true, i.e. that they actually indulge but not at all respect when people haggle with them a lot. Notwithstanding this, there are of course some that also will indeed lose respect for you for overpaying.

My point is that it's not a homogenous thing, and neither is one solution the right one for everyone.

Also, while there are absolutely girls out there that you can pay and they'll respect you (in some capacity), I think it's an ironic notion ... really, how much respect could you really expect or even want from a girl you are paying for sex?

Overall I think this whole 'right price to pay' issue depends mostly on your personality. I place a high premium on the mood and lack of conflict with the girl, while some others place more of a premium on being in control and perceiving themselves as being respected. I don't see how either is better or worse, and I certainly do not think there is a moral (or otherwise) high ground on paying less.

As a side comment, though I think in theory (and probably in practice for many) tipping after is a good idea, it actually has really backfired on me personally a couple of times. Again, I think it's just a case of different strokes for different folks.
