The Shanghai Hotel looks like any other 3. 4 star hotel in Shanghai. You would not know it was home to the famous sauna by any outward appearances. There are a lot of tour groups (mostly Europeans). That seem to use the hotel. The rooms are a little dowdy and worn, but acceptable. Wired internet, convenient location. I used to stay there frequently but there are many better hotels in that price range (better in terms of non-sauna facilities, that is! ).
So don't worry. You can stay at the Shanghai Hotel with your wife and she won't know what goes on in the sauna.

Indeed, can one have an okay room, dine at the restaurants whilst partaking of the beauties at the sauna on occasion? I will be there only two days anyway.
At the Nana, there are working girls, those who obviously look the part, in the lobby, outside the lobby, in the hotel restaurant, at the hotel bar, outside the parking lot, not to mention coming out of the occasional hotel room with a huge Farang (Westerner). Is that the case at Shanghai Hotel (I would assume it is much more low-keyed)? Shanghai hotel is a normal 3-4 star hotel. You can stay there with your family and kids and nobody will notice anything going on.
Of course there will be occasionally some girls hanging in the bar in the evening, like in all hotels, but nothing special and obvious.
The action is in 2nd floor, up with elevator. There is a sauna club. For infos RTFF.
It is fun to stay there, maybe with your wife, while she is going shopping you may stay in the hotel. She will never find out, what you did during her shopping tour

The Shanghai hotel is very normal and a comfortable place to stay. If you are concerned about your business colleague being comfortable you can stay at the Hilton which is right behind this hotel. The Hilton is full of expats, a great place to make contacts in the executive lounge, and has very few WGs in the bar or lobby.

ThanksOk. Here is the deal. The girls work one of two shifts each week. Either they are on from 1pm. 1 am or 3pm. 3 am. This means that if you get there at about 3, you can shower and head back for a good time with your choice of the ladies that will be there all day.
Usually the place starts to get busy AFTER dinner time around 10pm. This can be hit or miss and depends on the night of the week and if there are any holidays coming up etc. Also if there are any big events in town that will attract throngs of Laowai that read this forum and show up just like you.
I have been several times and find that if you either go very early (1pm. 5pm) or relatively late (after 1am) you generally get a pretty good choice. Add in the fact that it's early bird special until like 5 and you get 100RMB price reduction on the FS massage. I like the early afternoon.
I may be wrong on the 5PM deadline for early bird. It may be earlier, I always forget. At any rate, prices are posted on the board as you get off the elevator, but everyone usually walks by that and right up to the desk.

Imho, the best time is mid afternoon when the girls are fresh and awake and not so bottom sore. In Pudong, most open around 2 and I try to be showered by 230 and either asking for my favorite (at the moment #6 at World Plaza) or ready to review the troops. I agree, no tips are necessary for sauna girls.
If you get along well with your sauna girl, simply ask for her again. Many saunas in Shanghai give the girl a bigger cut of the total fee if you are a repeat customer. She will be compensated by the management. In fact, some saunas require that girls get repeat customers every month or they get fined. This is to ensure that the girls more likely give GFE service, plus it is good business. Be sure to ask for your girl by number before the line up.
I have to say, IMHO, tips are a waste of money. Most girls do not really appreciate and understand the gesture of a tip.
The culture of tipping in China is not normal since it was completely looked down upon by the communists (ie. outlawed as bourgeois), and in fact in some restaurants today, waitstaff can be fired for accepting tips. I have experienced this in Dong Bei when a waitress refused a tip (given by an American tourist - not me!) and stating that she would be fired from her job for accepting tips. However, it is now a form a theft control and keeping the staff honest versus keeping anti-communist bourgeois business practices at bay.
Girls in Shanghai will gladly accept tips, but of course they will think you are just a big sucker.

Shanghai girls, though relatively rare as pros in saunas, are often pushy bitches. I have had a couple by chance before. They make lousy pros.
As for the rest of them who are willing to give you the GFE treatment, many saunas require their girls to go through a routine to cover all the bases. They want the girls to make sure you get the full treatment, though yes, this also means less time for you to penetrate her. I have been asked by a Papasan (at a different sauna) about my girl and her routine too. This is quality control, and weeds out the girls who are not performing. It ruins the reputation of the sauna if they don't do a decent job.
Though you have to admit, if you were a WG and were penetrated 3-5 times per day with a complete stranger, you would want to get it done quick and minimize the amount of time being f****d too.
I usually dispense with the routine and get straight to business.

Long time reader, first time poster. Visited the pub that cant be mentioned for the first time in over 12 months earlier this evening.
The facilities have improved greatly, unfortunately the same cannot be said for the service. 350 rmb for a somewhat mechanical session. Will not be returning.

Also that I did not bargain (as MAB said the first and maybe biggest mistake) kinda wonders me (bargained for suits, shoes and anything else I bought in SH quite successfully.), but maybe thats just the learning experience.
At least some other newbies can learn this now. By RTFF I did not find these kind of warning signs.

Well, being a monger of my word, I went back to the famous SH Sauna on the 2nd floor. BEAUTIFUL facility though the staff seemed to be a bit jaded and also a bit too pushy for manicures, body scrubs, etc. Got freshened up and went directly to the bowl where there were some beautiful ladies. About 15 in all at 5pm. I chose based on eye contact, smile and the usual beauty judgement and off I went to the nice room with #2 Ya Ya.
I really believe the level of service at SH Sauna is way over rated based on my two consecutive visits. The girl was pretty, very pretty, but was mechanical in everything she did. Did not really warm up at all! The cat bath was ridiculous with her concentrating on my calf! Silly! The red rope. My first, and last, was a joke! The CBJ was weak, and her FS was only fair. I TRIED to warm her up with a massage to her but she didn't really respond. She allowed some DATY but again was not really responsive. I did check out Changde rd when I was in Shanghai,I was staying in Jingan temple area.I didn't see much actions or quality at Changde rd, I think the best actions for BBS are still at Wuzhong Rd area,You need to know there are raids all the time, and Shanghai mongering are changing for the worst with the 2008 game coming up.
There will be city clean up on all BBS and SW, so the options is go to the sauna and paid the high price.

Decided to check out Siyuan Sauna on the 3dr floor of the Merryln Hotel on Zhangyang Lu. I would say this place is actually a notch nicer than the famed SH Sauna! The staff were uniformly nicer and the facilities were at least as good if not better! Spectacular decore and the rooms were clean and nicely done. Absolutely nothing close by to this hotel, if it is the Ramada Airport Hotel. Maybe they shall offer some inhouse massage, in the best case.
You at least have to go to Jinqiao District or even more down town to Lujiazui District to find some action on Pudong Side.

I'm a big fan of World Plaza because of service and convenience. You can take the subway line 2 to Dong Chang and go to exit 3, which is World Plaza building, and then to the basement (B2). Never have to try and give directions to a taxi driver.
Service is steller. The good ones are: #5, #6, and #60.

They have in-house "massage". I went to the bar in the basement (not the lobby bar). They had bar girls down there, one offered to give me a massage. Sure. Get to the room, the upsell begins. She wanted 1000 RMB just to disrobe, and I couldn't talk her down from 2000 RMB for FS. This is on top of the hotel's charge of 600RMB or so for the massage, making 2600 RMB for FS. For less than half of that you can taxi into town, hit a sauna, and taxi back. This depends on what time you're there, of course.
Another possibility would be to do the negotiations in the basement bar before you go to the room. If the girl gives you an outrageous price for the good stuff, dismiss her and get another one. Negotiation is a standard practice in China.
If you get to the hotel in time (say before 8pm), you could take the hotel shuttle to the airport (free), hop on the Maglev (50 RMB), transfer to the Metro (subway, probably 5 RMB), ride up a few stops to Dongchang Road, take exit three to World Plaza, and hit the basement sauna (650 or 750, depending). The Maglev stops around 9pm I believe, so you'd need to either be back to the Maglev station before then, or have a card from the hotel and take a taxi. All of this is manageable without speaking any Chinese.
Somewhere on the board is a review of a sauna near the Maglev stop at Longyang Road. Maybe do a search for Longyang.
I also remember reading about a BBS area within reasonable taxi distance. Not sure how comfortable it is for a non-speaker.

Be extremely cautious, once you will step out of the hotel, you will be immediately approached by girls who will try to make you go with them to a bar or coffee shop. You will be badly cheated in those places and might risk to be presented bills of several hundreds of USD for things you actually never ordered. BE WARNED!!!
For mongering, there is nothing really close to this hotel. But, taxi rides to the "usual suspect places" (Shanghai Hotel, Xintiandi, Tongren Road, etc.) do not take long and are cheap.

Just returned from World Plaza B2 and I can subscribe at what Guybert and the others said about this place – the attitude of the girl I had was great. Perhaps the same place, the street I know is on the right hand doorstep of the new Eton Hotel, Changyi Lu crosses Dongfang Lu, I was on the East side of Dongfang Lu, close to the river, shown on all my maps as a wasteland. Yesterday, I went to the 999 Sauna, formerly known as Yi Ping (Think that was the name)
Anyways, I followed the directions given on this forums; Line4 to Shanghai Stadium (not in-door stadium). Got off, Exit 3, walk straight ahead until you pass the big stadium on your right side, closer to 500 meters (1500ft-ish), walk across the huge intersection with an overpass, and a black building with red letters 999 will appear on the left side of the road going south after around 300m (900ft).
A small digression, there was also a BBS on the left side around 150m before the actual Sauna with all girls in the window and not a single scissor visible. I didn't go in so I have no idea about prices etc.

Hello gents,
Been away from Shanghai for almost a year but back now to have some fun. My experience (in many places) is that BmD gals and freelancers will respond if you treat them well. Especially the newbies.

My first try at downloading a scan! The white background cards are front and back for the 5f Sauna that used to me called Ming Dian and is located very near the Nextage Mall in Pudong behind Wagas. The reddish brown card is front and back for the B2 World Plaza sauna. Both offer 550 afternoon rates and very good tallent!
Both are withinn easy walking distance from the Dongchang exit of line 2 subway. I just wanted to add a little story

Last week I was staying at the infamous Shanghai Hotel which is next street up from the Hilton. Unfortunately this site was blocked and despite trying proxies I could not get in.

In idle moments barrelled out the end of the Metro1 line, transfered to the Metro5 light rail for an aircon elevated sightseeing tour. Because it was there, thats why.
Out a couple of stations (cant recall the station, probably Dongchuan, but it is impossible to not see the building, on the west side, right off the rail line & 1/2 block north, i.e. right before the station) you'll note a Greek / Roman / Deco monstrosity, complete with the giant shield matrons bas relief, statues, gilt, etc. Lot of construction out there (duh), but love it that this place was up and running before the paint on all the surrounding industry is dried.

This is the oldest trick in the book. The reason that touts are all over Nanjing Rd is because all they need is ONE guy to fall into the trap in a week and they have enough money to live on for the next month. They are counting on visitors who don't know the scam rather than locals who know that touts are not the way to find a good time in this city.

What could you have done? Safety always comes first. Don't risk physical harm for the sake of money. But I would also say that in most cases, physical harm is very unlikely even if it is hinted at. They are relying heavily on you being afraid of that and afraid of publicity / colleagues finding out etc. I think if you really called the police they would back down.
