Soi 9
Summary: This location is at Soi 9, east of 2nd Road. This a small, quiet street which I walked from 2nd Road and pretty certain it went all the way through to Soi Buakao. Could be wrong. This street had many foreigners, massage parlors, and small nice restaurants. It begins across the Siam Bay View Hotel which is on the West side of 2nd Road. None of these places had a website, so go there yourself to confirm everything. When walking here recall not feeling well, so notes sparse. Walking from 2nd to Soi Buakao.

Florida Hotel
Looked small. 500 b/day

Highlander Guest House
Attached to bar. Has fridge, AC, TV, no carpet. 500 b/day

Smile House
600 b/day, 10000 b/mo

Thorg Guest House
500 b/day, 12000 b/mo

The Game’s On !!!
Bar and hotel. Looks livable. AC, fridge. 600 b/mo. 12500 b/mo.

Siam Firebird
Attached to a bar. AC, fridge, etc. 400 b/day.

Soi 8
Summary: This is central, and many argue is the heart of Pattya. Famous for bar beers. Recently there have been a few go-gos popping up there. Active. Noisy at night. Recommend get a room away from the noise. Walking from Beach Road towards 2nd Road.

Flipper Lodge Hotel
Large, clean, across the road from the beach. Has wifi, but not free. I stayed there way in the day. It’s fine. 935 b/day, 786 b/wk. Other rooms 930 – 1075 b/wk
http://www.flippergroup.com

Smiler’s Bar
Has TV, AC, no WiFi. This is a small room in a bar. 550 b/day

Eastiny Inn Hotel
Large hotel but recall smaller than the other large hotels, north side of street. Convenience store at corner. Charge for WiFi in room, but has Wifi in lobby. Though many like Eastiny, personally have always had something of a distrust for them. 950 b/day.
http://www.eastinypattaya.com

Eastiny Plaza Hotel
Large hotel, also north side of street. Supposedly has larger rooms. Think there is WiFi in room. Has pool. I’d never stay there. Buffett for fatties only. 1250 b/day. 1200 b/wk.
http://www.eastinypattaya.com

Sunshine Hotel and Residence
South side on Soi 8. Stayed there back in the day. They raised their rates. Felt room was small, minimal. Recall a few customers were furious with something there. No idea what. Has a small pool. Staff told me cheaper to make reservation online. Still, if you want to stay on Soi 8, viable. 1100 b/day, includes breakfast.
http://www.sunshinepattaya.com
Person at the front desk suggested for a good rate to go here:
http://www.agoda.com

Sunbeam Hotel
Lots of Asians in lobby. 3000 b/day. 1900/wk. Ding-Dong Ding-Dong alert.

Vista House
In a white, small building, south side of soi 8s. Small room. AC, TV, refrig, no WiFi, fridge, hot water. Small room is 450 b/day.

High Five Hotel
North corner of soi 8 and 2nd Road. 900 b/day. 700 – 750 b/wk. When I stayed there place was large and clean. Lots of marble. However, day I left there was a fire. That said, suspect all these places are built like crap so uncertain if fair to single this place out. Viable inexpensive place if you’re a Soi 8 fan. Why doesn’t this place have a web site? Sigh …

Soi 7
Summary: Not as busy as Soi 8. Mexican place there is OK, with a better atmosphere than food. Bar beers. Pizza. Rosies and Pig and Whistle are not my style of food. The owner of one of those places (forgot which, sorry) is a jerk. Walking from 2nd to Beach Road.

JP Inn
A small rundown place at the north corner. Has AC, hot water, TV. Possible for cheap price but would check place out carefully before staying there. 400 b/day.

Anna Jet
Located above a bar. Outstanding website. Has AC, TV, fridge, hot water, wifi in room. When I stayed there years ago found the walls thin and room rather noisy, minimal. May have changed, do not know. 450 b/day.
http://www.annajet.co.uk

Flipper House
Large and nicer hotel. South side of street. Has pool. Staff pretty arrogant. 1100 b/day.
http://www.flippergroup.com

Dennis the Menace
Small, inside a bar. 700 b/day, 16000 b/mo.

Bella Vista
Located on that street between Soi 7 and Soi 8. When I stayed there room small, adequate. Careful of noise at night. Can be good value considering location. However, wary that they are part of Eastiny chain. Has WiFi in room but not free. Free Breakfast. 750 b/day, 700 b/wk.
http://www.eastinypattaya.com

Rosie O’Grady’s Pub and Restaurant
The restaurant looks nice. One of those English places which shows lots of TV sports. Have not checked but suspect the rooms also nice. Has WiFi in lobby. 650 b/day.
http://www.rosieogradyspattaya.com/

Eastiny 7
Looked like a reasonable place. 850 b/wk.
http://www.eastinypattaya.com/seven/

Note: If you look around this area, few other smaller places to stay, esp between Soi 7 and 8. Looked doable esp for cheap chariles.

Central Pattaya Road (also called Pattaya Klang Road):
Summary: These hotels are across the street from Top Supermarket. Tops has restaurants which are a good value. A few tailor pimps are there who are not too annoying. Suspect less noise from loud music but more noise from traffic. If you cross and head on Central going towards Pattaya 3rd there is Memorial Hospital, across the street are fresh mangos and other fruits. Pass 3rd Road there are a few good (legit) massage places, and CarreFour Mall.

Queen Pattya Hotel
Close to the south corner Central and 2nd. Almost stayed there, but damn carpet was horrible and left. No idea if still a problem or not. Larger rooms for the baht. Location was OK. Has pool. 700 b/day. Why don’t they have a website?? Sigh …

Furama Beach Hotel
Hotel looked OK. Thankfully no carpeting. Located south corner of Central and 2nd Road.

Summary: These are all near the Pattaya Memorial Hospital. Quiet area and these places looked small, some appeared basic. There are a few blocks and across the street from the action.

SV Apartment
Has AC, no fridge, TV. 350 b/day, 4500/mo.

@ Home Apartment
Has WiFi. Looks pretty nice. Quiet. 790 b/day, 18000/mo.

Naranya Mansion
Person spoke no English at all. 500 b/day. 6000 b/mo

Eurotel Service Apartment.
Looks quite nice. No carpet, house keeping, AC, fridge, etc. Behind hospital. 750 - 850/day. 12500 - 14500/mo.
http://www.eurotelpattaya.com

Best Beach Villa
Place looks nice. Has pool, gym, WiFi. 1350 b/day.
http://www.bestbeachpattaya.com

Note: At the corner of Soi 5 and Beach Road is yet another annoying tailor pimp.

Soi 4
Summary: This street is just south of Big C. It has the Pattaya International Hospital. Am walking from 2nd Road to Beach Road.

http://www.sabailodge.com

Rainbow Apartment
There are basic pink apartments which look like a Motel 6. Has AC, TV, fridge, no WiFi. 7000 – 8000 b/mo plus 3000 deposit, and elect and water.

There are next two other large hotels on this street which go for 3000 – 4000 b/day. Ding-Dong, Ding Dong, Ding-Dong alert. These places have been skipped.

Soi 1
Summary: Soi 1 is too far north for my taste. Hotels overall I found overall nice but a bit too expensive. Am walking from Beach Road to 2nd Road.

soi pattaya land 2, 13/4
summary: this is a southern street which connects beach road to 2nd road. it is probably most famous for connecting to boyz town. street is known for gogos, food. blue parrot has decent mexican food. there is a very annoying tailor pimp at the intersection of beach road – you have my permission to punch that guy in the face. many of the tailor pimps from that area on beach road up to royal garden plaza mall are the worst in all pattaya, harassing each and every farang anywhere near. given my choice, would rid pattaya of those annoying tailor pimps before even lady boys. at least lady boys know when to phuck off.

penthouse hotel
is a themed hotel. place looks as a cave. staff friendly and showed me a few rooms. there were these things hanging from the ceiling – what are those for? anyway, there was some thought involved with it, and creative design makes for a nice change. bothered me a bit that the tv had a video to what appeared their attached go-go. bit monopolistic, however no one is forcing anyone to take their girls (of who are probably overpriced anyway).
the cheapest room listed was 845 baht. however, the cheapest room available was 1195 baht. pricing went from there, to 2121 b, to 5946 b, to 10672 b/day, and everywhere in between. think there is a 17 percent tax added to all these rates. has wifi and includes breakfast.

Popper Valuations: Hotels in Pattaya
October 2010.

Intro:

Overall Pattaya has countless hotels. Personally when going Pattaya, I don’t bother to make reservations. Even during the Christmas breaks, the highest of the high season, just hop a plane, found my airport cab, and quickly found some hotel under 700 baht. As I go through this listing below, there are plenty of reasonable rooms in the 500 – 1000 baht range, and personally believe there no reason to spend over 800 baht/night. Apartments which are rented monthly are even cheaper, and can be found in the 8000 – 13000 baht range. That said, I understand that there are many who like some luxury, which is why listed are places as high as about 1500 baht/night -- which I personally feel really high. I classify 2000 baht and up at sky high Ding-Dong pricing, and these were skipped. If you want to whine and moan about it, then make your own hotel report and call it Farang Ding Dong Hotel Guide.

Popper Walking Pattaya:

From September 3rd through the 16th, 2010 Popper walked Pattaya. This was the low season High season is from November through end-April, and at this time prices will increase from zero to fifteen percent or more. After approaching hotel, told them was just shopping around and comparing prices for another place to stay. Asked for description, and rates daily, weekly, and monthly. Room pictures when available were good, and would try to get a feeling for the place. Of course, if the lobby was really nice, and the rooms horrible, my feeling would be completely wrong. Few if any hotels were full. And no, did not go and actually check the rooms.

Important: Listed are generally the hotel’s cheapest rates. In other words, if a place said rates for Room A is 600, Room B is 750, and Room C is 900, would generally list only the 600 baht rate. Also regardless of what they called it, whether “promo”, “special price just for you” or “special price because it is Thursday”, whatever, listed is the price given to me.

There were at times miscommunications with the locals since some spoke little or no English. Due to this and the fact that I could have screwed up my notes / categorizations, my guestimate is that over 90 percent … ummm greater than 95 percent of this is accurate. With help from this board, if / when next update, many errors will be corrected, all while probably making all new ones. Therefore, if there are corrections which need be made … and there will be … do let me know.

While walking down the street I got most … but not all hotels. Some were skipped. They are listed as follows:

* No addresses or phone numbers are given.

* Rarely are e-mails listed. They are listed only if it a large hotel without an Internet site.

* If hotel has an Internet web site, it is always listed. In my opinion, there is no excuse for especially a large hotel not to have a web page. Unfortunately, as you can see from this listing, too many hotels are indeed missing Internet web sites.

Popper List of Hotel Tips

When seeking hotel, the following are basics: Cold air conditioning, television, refrigerator, nice large comfy bed for at least two people, clean bathroom, toilet flushes, and hot water / shower. The room should have daily maid service with fresh towels and small soap bars, a closet and some tables, chairs, etc. Most important is the room must be clean.

Am doing a bit of a brain dump of what I have learned in well over a decade worth of travel. Many points are debatable. This advice may be used throughout Thailand, SE Asia, and much of the world.

Popper List of Specific Hotel Tips: Do not be a Farang Ding Dong!

* Do not overpay. Many argue it wrong that if you overpay a girl you may spoil the market. The same goes for hotels.

* And last I heard, Thailand is very much still third world. Many working gals earn about 150 baht a day. Don’t make a fool of yourself by comparing hotel prices in New York, LA, Paris, and London to anywhere in Thailand. Ever.

* If you pay more than 2000 baht per night, you are paying too much. Ding Dong - you are the sole reason why hotel prices keep going up. You are encouraging dual pricing: one for locals and a higher one for farangs. You are part of the problem. You are the problem.

* I can hear it now: “But Popper, I want to impress the girls with a $100 hotel room.” The answer is that you are confusing Pattaya with reality. Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but there is no Santa or Mickey Mouse. Grow up.

* Bargain. Bargain hard. Bargain again. Last year a hotel I stayed at for years suddenly raised their price by 50 baht a day. Spoke to the manager. Tried to negotiate. Told them I would pay a month in advance. When they did not agree to my terms, I left that place forever. Sure, I can easily afford a few hundred baht a week. Not the point. Point is to keep prices low … and that hotel down the street is cheaper, better, and would love to have you.

* Do your part. Help keep hotel prices in check. If everyone did, hotel prices would get lower. Period.

Popper Specific Hotel Advice:

* Never use a Thai “travel agent” to make a hotel reservation. You will pay 25 plus percent higher rate.

* From what I can tell, making reservations online via some third party website is generally more expensive compared to actually being there. And, my personal feeling is that if you go there yourself, you often get a better deal than if you go even to their online site. And I confirmed this by looking at a few online sites, and the price I got was often cheaper than their advertised web price. Often was the phrase “special for you”, which meant that the hotel is empty and in desperate need of customers. The best way to get the cheapest price is still the old fashion way: Shoe leather.

* Always pay cash. Never pay for hotel room with a credit card. Never give any company in Thailand (or any third world country) your credit card. You’ve been warned. If you do have an absolute emergency, go to a large bank and get cash off your credit card.

* When first arriving at a new hotel, after you inspect the room, pay on a daily basis. After three / four days, if everything satisfactory (no noise at night, no bugs, toilet still flushes, etc) ask for weekly / monthly rates. I prefer the weekly rate, unless I know the place well.

* Never ever tell the hotel the date you are leaving, unless you absolutely positively know that date. Few years ago stayed in a nice bungalow on the beach in Koh Samui at 750 b/day. Told them that I may leave to north on the island. After week, decided to stay longer. However they rented my room to someone else online (I checked and their online rate was over 2000 b/day). They forced me out.

Popper Hotel Staff Tips:

* It essential to keep good relations with staff. If you keep good relations with them, in the future they may give you a better price. It is also the right thing to do. These people are working an honest job and earn an honest living. They get paid next to nothing, and deserve credit for putting up with your daily crap.

* Ask the maid to do your laundry. If yes, every week put it on your bed. The bill should be figure 150 – 250 baht. Pay her the bill, plus 500 baht or more. She will be thrilled, and this is her weekly tip. If the hotel offers to do laundry, there is a good chance that you will be charged farang Ding-Dong pricing. Check first. If so, huge red flag. If the hotels overcharges its customers on laundry change hotels immediately, because there is no telling what else they will overcharge you on.

* The day you leave, give each person who works at the front desk at minimum 500 baht. This is essential. They work hard for you, (eg: take the girl’s ID and keep them honest) and it important to recognize their contribution.

Popper Room Tips:

* Before inviting any girl up, set up the room properly. Personally I have a hardened suitcase (which I bought in Pattaya for about 1400 baht some 3 -4 years ago) with a combo and key lock where I keep credit card, cash, and passport. My carryon luggage sits next to it, locked, and has a week’s worth of cash ready. There are two combo locks including a combo strap and this combo cable thingy to lock both pieces of luggage together and to something immovable.

* I prefer the hotel have no elevator. Walk stairs. Few reasons: First, you need the exercise. Second, the hotel will be 200 – 400 plus baht cheaper. Third, and most important: safety. Should the gal somehow manage to steal luggage (which in my case has never happened), I could not imagine her carrying my large 35 plus pound luggage down three or more flights of stairs.

* Should you use the safety box? Debatable. Generally would not. If the safety box is behind the front desk then never use it. Too easy for a worker behind the front desk to steal it; and should it get stolen, it is impossible to prove anything to the cops. If the safety box is in the room, I might place my passport and some cash in there, might not.

* If the hotel has a refrigerator, make certain it is empty, and not filled with all their overpriced food and drinks. If it is, tell them to move their crap out of your room. If they refuse, this a huge red flag. Change hotels immediately.

* I have found that generally carpeting old, worn, musty, and it causes my allergies to go through the roof. If carpeting, move out. Unfortunately, few of the Thais knew the word “carpeting” or “rug” so it not included in this hotel list.

* Generally nights set the AC on low, otherwise may catch that cold in your throat. If your hotel is cheap, and you’re staying there for a while, tell them to swap the AC filter and offer to pay for it.

Skipped Areas in Hotel Walk:

While walking hotels in Pattaya, many areas were skipped. The big areas include around and south of Tuc.Com. Yes, some excellent values there. There a huge area from Soi Buakhoa to 3rd Road where lots of the girls live. There is north of Central Pattaya Road and east of 2nd Road. Skipped area on Walking Street because it’s very noisy, taxis cannot drive there, and walkways poorly labeled. The street going towards Jontiem and north of Big C often have good values. Also skipped much of the area along Beach Road. And from everywhere countless small streets were skipped. May get much of the skipped areas next time, may not. Then again, how many hotels does a person need.

Excellent work and very impressive! It looks like World Travel 69 has some competition. It takes a special kind of person to go to this much trouble to help out his fellow forum members. I don't know if you and World Travel 69 have a touch of OCD or something, but whatever it is that inspires you to go to such great lengths in order to put together such a fantastic report, you are to be commended.

Great contribution, Popper1, and thanks! I will visit Pattaya in early December, but am looking for more upmarket accommodations. Would you happen to know of the GFliness of the Hard Rock and/or Marriott Courtyard? Haven't seen (or round) recent missives on this thread on those.

Many thanks, again! Great work!

Great work, Popper1!

I wrote a report (http://www.InternationalSexGuide.info/forum/showthread.php?p=810744) some time ago in the Pattaya Hotel thread about the Welcome Plaza Hotel (http://www.InternationalSexGuide.info/forum/showthread.php?p=810744), and this establishment should probably be included in your list (great location, decent place, reasonable price for the location, girl friendly if you've booked your room directly with them and not via an agency, large rooms, swimming pool, fridge, safe in room, etc.). No wifi with them though, if I am not mistaken.

A Swiss gentleman that I know from another board created a few years ago a website about Pattaya hotels and despite its poor design and several dead links, it's still an interesting resource IMHO: http://pattayaone.com/

PS: By the way, a fridge is called "tuyen" ("ตู้เย็น") in Thai (that's for the next time that you will have to deal with a Thai girl who doesn't know the meaning of "fridge" in English).
