Some guys here would look into your posting history and decide whether you are worthy of a reply or tell you to RTFF. Just write a FR after your stay and I'll be happy. Here is my hassle free, humble opinion!

In order to rent an apartment, most places want a minimum of a one month stay but there are a few exceptions. If your first priority is to be near a beach, you are not going to have many choices because the five star hotels and resorts monopolize the decent beachfronts out on Mactan. Most every property is girl friendly especially if you book for two. I know a few realtors that might have a line on some sea view condos but it will probably cost you. You should consider Airbnb as there are many rentals that might suit you.

You can find a few serviced apartments around but most prefer to rent by the month. If you plan on being in Cebu for only 10 days, book a hotel. If you can't afford a hotel bring a cardboard box and set up shop near one of the NRA squatter areas. Better idea still, when the squatters have cleaned you out, take your box over to Hadsan public beach, buy a case of red horse grandes and get a tan.

BTW, a 10 day stay is not an extended stay. IMO anything over a month is worth looking into renting a condo or serviced apartment because the best value is booking a monthly rate vs staying in a hotel and paying a nightly rate.

Certain serviced apartments will book by the night but usually you can book a nicer hotel for the same rate. Certain serviced apartments will book by the week, but you plan to stay for 10 days and you will have to pay for two weeks.

A number of hotels around Cebu will provide a monthly rate, and it's usually best to try to get the rate down by telling them you will pay in cash, just make sure to tell them after you agree on the rate that the room is for two people with breakfast included. FYI hotels are much more likely to accept a lower monthly rate during the slower months.

Here are a few suggestions you might want to try. You can find a few gems in the TA link, hidden amongst the over-priced three bedroom condos.

There are no beaches in Cebu City; at least not any you'd want to visit.

Was fortunate enough to make a first trip to Makati and AC a few months ago. Only spent about a day and a half in Makati, but it is obviously a good area. Only had time for a Burgos bar girl and a Havana Cafe freelancer, both were not that special but I can see how those with time and some fieldwork do very well there. Then headed to AC for a week. A board member graciously showed me the place on my first night, I picked up a girl way too late, thought she did a runner but it turned out she came back a few hours later with a friend who she offered up to me and they just wanted to screw, sleep and eat. I don't recommend taking girl from AC to Cebu. Set up a DIA girl (or several) instead.

1. Cebu is more expensive than AC but less than Makati. For sightseeing go to Magellan's Cross, guitar factory, south beach resorts.

2. You can meet girls in Ayala Mall. Stay in hotel near there. There is also Silver Dollar Bar with takeout nearby.

!. I don't think any place in Philippines is quite like Makati. A few places to visit in Cebu are Fort San Pedro and Yap Ancestoral house. Magellan's cross is a bit disappointing, but you should visit anyway. St Nino was damaged by the earthquake, but still might be worth a visit. Go up to Tops for the sunset. Ayala and SM are the two biggest malls. Carbon Market is an interesting place to walk around.

4 Here are two alternatives to Borocay. 1) Take Ocean Jet ferry to Tagbilaran, Bohol and then taxi to the white sand Alona beach. 2) Take a bus or taxi up the coast From Cebu to Oslob and go snorkeling with the butanding. The beach isn't so great at Oslob, but the waterfall is well worth a visit.

I will have a companion and we both like snorkeling. So p4 p and scuba diving info not necessary. But feel free to share if you think it will help others.

I've found dive resorts to be full of friendly, helpful people and they know good snorkeling spots, so I won't hesitate to stay at such a place.

I'd prefer not to pay over php 3,000 per night on accommodation.

I know it's a long bus ride from north terminal to up north, which is why I've always headed in different directions. X Man.

I've been to several resorts in Northern Cebu on various trips, including a few times at both Bantayan and Malapascua. Not been impressed with Bantayan, but it is popular with ex-pats, particularly Santa Fe. Big, flat island with a scrub interior, so-so beaches and poor snorkeling. Okay bars, but that's all. Tried San Remigio, but no coral reefs and an extensive mud flat at low tide. Prefer Malapascua for Bounty Beach, okay snorkeling, (most places in Philippines are less than great.) Hire a banca to circle the island and it will take you to several of the better sites over the course of three to four hours. For places to stay, I recommend Little Mermaid Resort, just 50 yards from the beach, as that will be in the range of 2500-3000 P. Ocean Vida, also on Bounty Beach, is probably the best resort, but style is rather motelish. Their prices will be higher. However, the restaurant at OV gives a lovely beach view and serves good food at reasonable prices. I'd stay at Little Mermaid, formerly named Sunsplash Resort. If the floating bar is back in operation, that's a must do at sunset. I've taken the bus, V-hires and taxis at Various times. I was able to negotiate a taxi ride for 2200 pesos a couple of times from Cebu City to Maya, however, the wait for the ferry banca may discount that option. The bancas to Malapascua work like V=hire vans, leaving only when they reach a certain capacity, or when your impatience results in your decision to pay the extra to get them to leave!

No 2 Problem: Life by western standards is not cheap. You want a nice appartement, not a shithole. You pay 1000 USD-month at least. You want a car, you like western food, not only vegetables and rice. All pricey.

No 3 Problem: Once you serious sick your only option is to get on a plane fly to Singapore or back home. Medical treatment and equipment is on a level 20 to 30 years back. And prices are hilarious which you as foreigner has to pay. Insurance. Over 70. No chance.

No 4 Problem: you are as foreigner an intruder. Whoever want to give you problems, will win over you. Even guys low under the radar do fall in a trap one day.

Go there for vacation, can be a couple of month. Enjoy the time then. But at the end have an escape plan back home.

Also I calculated that the cost / benefit cutover point for renting long term vs hotels / apartments per night was 14 days and it is unlikely I will spend more than 14 days straight in any one city. AirBNB have some apartments near Ayala and It Park for around 2000 pesos per night. There was one in One Oasis (which looks to have a very good pool for lap swimming) for around 2000. So I will explore these options more in future trips.

The waterfalls, HM, again I am from Norway so if I say this fall was around 30-40 mts I told here in my country we do have some waterfalls of like 600 to 655 mts. But the place was beautiful with loads of screaming koreans out under the waterfalls while they had the normal picture bonanza.

The mentioned resort was all nice but crappy food. I don't know how they manage to destroy the easiest dishes here in phils but I would not give that resort a top star due to this. Others than that it was nice relaxing and you didn't need any money around the resort as you could just charge your room. Ibiza bar, nightclub, restaurant atthe resort very nice and additional entertainment. Found out they ran the same show every three nights but its ok. Some sexy dancers I must say.

And here comes the strange thing and I believe this is due to a combo of beeing drained from 9 days of heavy mongering to fall into something that could be a relationship lookalike. The saving grace is that there is a wonderful, and I mean wonderful Italian place 50 m from the hotel which imports most of its ingredients from Italy and so the pastas and pizzas are top notch. The expat owner is typically sitting outside and is a chatty character if you invite him to your table. I spent one week at the hotel and ate at the Italian place 5 times and twice at the Spanish place further down the road. I think the Shang is a better option and the buffet is of much higher quality. By the way, the wifi at the hotel is atrocious so it feels like you are at the Remington next to NAIA, but at least at the Remington you know there is no in room wifi. But it almost felt that way because the bandwidth the hotel has for the whole hotel must the same as my at home internet.

I had a tough time finding a fully furnished place for less then a year, but I did come across many very nice condos, townhouses, multi-family dwellings and single family homes that were more then reasonably priced (in the P5,000 to 15,000 range). Even more so once you get out of the city a little ways.


No 3 Problem: Once you serious sick your only option is to get on a plane fly to Singapore or back home. Medical treatment and equipment is on a level 20 to 30 years back. And prices are hilarious which you as foreigner has to pay. Insurance. Over 70. No chance.We can debate this issue for years. Plenty of bad hospitals and doctors in 1st world countries too. However, I will agree with you to a point. If you live near a major city then fairly good medical care can be had. And many of the attending physicians were trained and have experience practicing medicine in the USA, Europe, etc. About a year ago a friend in Makati had stroke. He received excellent care at a very reasonable cost and is doing quite well now (at WR. You know whom I'm talking about; do you recall the name of the hospital? Another friend there is battling cancer (and winning too); he lives in Dumaguete and travels to Cebu for his treatments at Cebu Doctors Hosp. His care is very good and also reasonably priced. Oth, out in provinces the medical care is archaic. And I too would probably seek care back in the USA for serious non- emergency care. Phil Health Care, a discount / fixed cost plan can be had P2,400 per year. For Blue Cross (Phils, not USA) I was quoted P9,600 per month for an 80/20 type plan (same as what I already have in the USA, but for which I pay over 600 USD per month for). The main difference was finding providers who will accept it (not an issue in bigger cities) and sometimes, from what I've heard, getting them to pre-approve certain treatments. I can't speak about getting insurance ofr those over 70 or with pre-existing conditions as I'm in my 50's and in reasonably good health (at least now, LOL).


No 4 Problem: you are as foreigner an intruder. Whoever want to give you problems, will win over you. Even guys low under the radar do fall in a trap one day.True, to a point. Foreigners rarely win in a court battle, but they do, and are open to get extorted / scammed more readily then a local (but they do to, you just don't see it splattered across the front pages of the newspapers). But this happens rarely. Yes, we do wear a target on out backs and we should keep it as small as possible, but it is a target none the less. Oth, I, along with thousands of other expats who've lived there for decades, would strongly disagree that it's inevitable you will "fall into a trap one day".


But at the end have an escape plan back home.This at least is one thing we can fully agree on! And further to that, although a local bank account is needed, don't put all your money / life's savings into it; transfer what you need for a few months at time from you home country (I'm presuming here that it's a first world country).

Yes, sites like AirNib, Craigslist, etc do show inflated prices that target foreigners. The hospital in Manila was Makati General and basically saved his life but there are IMHO likely to be more bad than good hospitals in this country.

In Cebu go to Chong Hua (and at times Cebu Doctors). The former is US accredited (was last time of asking) and has also helped a fried of Pip and myself when she nearly had a foot amputated. Treatment was first class and she did lose the foot and still looks good in lingerie LOL. Chong Ha also treated another ISGer very efficiently when her suddenly developed an illness -I recommended he went there immediately and a few days later was cured.

As for the plan to go home, yes a good idea and Pip and I have discussed this at times. A my age and condition I have made plans while retaining a place I Cebu. Also go to Bangkok as a few fly there not to USA.

Much depends on your health care insurance which can be very expensive (if a US citizen the figures Pip quotes are very cheap, for me it is a lot more). But which places accept it? Chong Hua would am sure, others you would need to ask.

As for quality in the provinces, this is very hit and miss. For example a lady in San Carlos City (a few hours drive from Cebu) wanted a sponsor for an IV training course in Cebu for 3 days. I asked why? Her reply in that "we have no one in the hospital who can administer an IV" was somewhat surprising. As you go further out of the major cities you will need an escape plan if you get very ill for sure.

A car I can buy in Cebu for example can get me far better car in the west etc. . Insurance for a mid range SUV is around PHP25-30000 a year fully comprehensive (you will need that as motorbikes are all over the place in Cebu and slalom in and out all the time. Matter of time before the car is hit or you hit them.

Upkeep? If the dealer has a package it is OK but local garages are cheaper but the be careful about warranties etc.

Food. All imported stuff is expensive, local milk is OK but if you have dietary issues then is harder. But that is the same for other parts of the world where I have stayed. Fish is very cheap, fresh salmon and blue marlin much cheaper than say Australia or UK but fresh vegetables can be sometimes very not fresh!

Local restos are OK but if you have a car you can drive around find new local places that are cheap. Some expat run places are IMHO are also cheap (say PHP 300 a meal). Beer is cheap if like booze.

So much depends on your tastes. Westie for example eats at many local food places or street vendors and is very happy (see Manila / Makati thread for his FR).

Thanks for the update. I passed that area during the holidays, but thought it was a holiday closure.

All star bar (sports bar) seems to be a regular bar much like Geckos a bit further down the street. Both have live bands and friendly women (waitresses / hostesses). I think discretion is much appreciated. No barfines at these places. You need to make other arrangements. Cebu has long been a favorite city of mine, in fact if was my first experience in Philippines. Here is a story of my arrival last week.

I left the provincial city where my provincial girl # 1 had accompanied me to the airport and put me on the flight safely with a good bye kiss after a lovely few romantic days.

The flight landed into Cebu on time and I was greeted by a previous flame from a previous trip, girl #2. No time wasted there. Just returned from a few days in Cebu. All the girls I met were from Facebook so not much to add in that regard but the number of no show / flake outs were lower perhaps due to school break, I'm not sure.

Wechat. I spent some time on this one night while waiting for a girl to finish work at a restaurant. Just back form three wonderful days and nights in Cebu City, my favorite GFE city.

Apart from that a few new condos are soon to be completed in and around Ayala this may mean more competitive prices but I doubt it given the pinoy way of thinking (IE charge lots as the westerner can afford rather than price it so the apartment is occupied 15 days a month and pays the mortgage).

But much depends on where you want to be (as it does in Manila etc) - you pay for location and I prefer to be in / around Ayala and if a short time visitor I would suggest the same.

There was a Cash Payment required after Check In and before Immigration Exit and Security, when we were going to the gate for our flight to KL.

I believe this was some sort of Airport fee, note, if you paid it and Immigration would not let you through, your 700 pesos was not refunded.

Looks like I'm set for a return trip to Cebu. I've been there twice and Davao several times. The timing is poor, I know, that close to Christmas. Traffic and more reasons for the girls to flake out on you. This opening came up on short notice, so I'm grabbing it. It's been more than a little rushed.

After my day off, I pretty much stayed to the same schedule. Ms K would drop around in the mid afternoon to early evening and stay until mid morning. If you want to play Mango stay Ayala or Mango not MActan IMHO. I have driven from Ayala (Luzon Ave) to Crimson Resort on a Friday afternoon. 2 hours later I got there! The way back was faster as late at night. Same for Shangri La.
